Which, yeah, if you read the devil venerable also wants to know (Which if you haven't, you should!) its obvious that our beloved Hanjiang is a little... off at times. But I feel like I forget how crazy he was in the original novel and in the revised! (●´⌓`●)

The way he so calmly accepted his death after he thought he killed Baili Qingmiao is genuinely so chilling. Man, he just went, 'Wenren È is dead and I finally had my revenge so! Bye everyone'. So casual with it.. And all the small tidbits about it scattered through the rest of the novel was so funny. Especially at the beginning with Wenren È trying to establish some self-worth into Hanjiang's mind and his right-hand man just staring blankly at him in return. It's so refreshing to see obsessive characters done right.

I'm so happy, I've wanted to get this into print since I finished reading it. The gold spots on the cover are metallic and shiny~

It's done in legal quarto, so almost the same size as a paperback, and it fits so nicely in my pocket. I will absolutely be revisiting this one though, because I have Ideas on how to make it even better

the whole sequence where Wenren È goes to capture Zhongli Qian is so fucking funny, but I have such a special place in my heart for Zhongli Qian immediately clocking that Wenren È 1) lets Yin Hanjiang do absolutely anything he wants, and 2) would let Shu Yanyan be devoured by wild beasts in an instant if she wasn't extremely useful to him (read: the only person he knows who understands a goddamn thing about poetry or having conversations). and then Zhongli Qian arrives at Xuanyuan Sect only to see that it's apparently exclusively staffed by hot men who are mincing around cleaning and tidying?? he's a smart guy but he doesn't have any way of knowing that these are all Shu Yanyan's subordinates who are being punished for her treachery. what's he supposed to think, that Wenren È isn't somehow isn’t the gayest man alive???

svsss fans please please please read the devil venerable also wants to know if you haven’t already, i just binge read it all in 3 days bcs i’s only 80 chapters and SO good

why i think svsss fans (like me) will enjoy it:

• it’s satire/makes fun of tropes (subversive!), very refreshing characters and story

• great female cast (the plot actually revolves around a female character, you will grow to love her), girls girl kind of novel, you will at points ship f/f ships more than the main cp (none are canon, unfortunately)

• the main couple is kind of like moshang (demon sect leader and his right hand man) but if sqh was actually lbg? (YHJ lets a man be skinned and wears his skin as part of his revenge plan)

• it’s also a transmigration novel, except the book is the transmigrator

• very oblivious main cp (but it’s obvious how much they care about each other)

• Zhongli Qian (nothing more to add, find out for yourself)

a little heads up:

the romance between the main cp (Wenren È and Yin Hanjiang) is – for the most part – not the main focus of the plot (but they do have great moments throughout and i love how their relationship develops)

also! some people might find the dynamic somewhat problematic, because WRE is about 200 years older and he saved a 5yo YHJ and „raised” him (= left him on his own for 10 years?), but they never have any sort of father/son relationship, plus it takes WRE about 150 years to actually fall in love with YHJ, but just keep all that in mind

that’s all, i just need more people to know about it, because it’s all i can think about right now

Book of the Week: Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know

Author: Cyan Wings/Qing Se Yu Yi (青色羽翼)

Genre: cultivation, ancient setting, danmei

My Synopsis: When a book detailing future events falls from the sky and lands into his hands, Devil Venerable Wenren È becomes curious about how his life could possibly become so entangled with some random female cultivator with terrible, terrible taste in men that he would give his life for her. Yin Hanjiang, his totally-not-in-love-with-shizun disciple, would also like to know.

My Actual Review: If "girl, stand up!" were a novel, this would be it. A great deal of it is humor from Wenren È tryna psychoanalyze why Baili Qingmiao has such terrible taste in men—because all the other women around him are also like “we don’t know wtf is wrong with her either” 😭 Wenren È also has a personality that reminds me a little of Tianlang-jun from svsss (minus the deadbeat dad part). Moments of angst do show up, but they are mostly around character backstory, so be prepared for that when we get flashbacks. I feel like this book has a similar payoff style to 2ha, in that certain details of some characters' backstories are presented early on in a very matter-of-fact way, only to have those details turned on their heads later in the story with the addition of some withheld information. Easily one of my favorite narrative structure styles.

Yes there is an age gap in this romance. No it is not grooming. Wenren È picks the child Yin Hanjiang up out of a corpse pile and drops him off at a waterfall for ten years to basically raise himself lmao. They don't get together until they are both adults. For real content warnings, because the plot of this story is the revision of a stallion, male power fantasy novel, all the scum behaviors of the (previous) male protagonist are shown to be addressed, so yeah.
