I rarely post personal stuff on here but irl I'm a writer whose work covers tech and AI quite a bit and with the WGA strike ongoing, I really want to stress that the reason Hollywood execs and higher-ups think they can just replace writers with chatgpt or have someone come and edit AI generated text is because they already think writing is that easy.

these people look at their shows, movies, etc as marketable (re, profitable) content so all they are watching for is "okay this show performed badly" and "this movie performed well" and I can promise you in a boardroom the quality, the time and effort that went into the actual writing is NEVER discussed as a contributing factor when it comes to the difference between those two things.

That's also the reason tools like chatgpt seem like magic to these people, because they've devalued the act of creation and everything that goes into making something that resonates with its audience, so naturally something that can scrape the entire digital world and spit something out that falls in line with what you asked seems like a wizard's spell, because they ALREADY think of writing as an afterthought, something where they just go "I need a show that appeals to the 16-24 age range" and writers can just fill in the blanks and they won't have to PAY PEOPLE for that.

There's a vast difference between art and content, and if you want to see more of the former, you should be furious they're trying to replace writers with what is essentially a programmable template generator. Pay your writers.

Recently Youtube's algorithm really wants me to watch Schindler's List and I never had so the other night I sat down and actually watched it.

Having a lot of thoughts about it but a major one I keep coming back to is how even an immensely and deeply flawed human being can go against "just following orders" and instead put in the work to actually help.

It may never be fully enough. It may never save as many as you'd hoped. But when you have a choice to either follow orders or save your fellow humans in front of you, I hope you choose the latter.

Schindler died in poverty. He was not a renown war hero nor was he at all famous or widely beloved. But he saw that he could help, even in some small way, and so he helped.

He was a Nazi who saw what the Nazis were doing to Jews and said no more. Enough. If I can even spare those under my charge, maybe a few extras, then at least I will have tried to do something about this.

I think a lot of people do not fancy this type of activism. It is messy, dangerous, and often completely thankless. Schindler survived as long as he did after the war due to those he saved helping him with donations. He was not popular in his hometown due to his association with Nazis, he was not popular in Germany, he was not popular in Argentina. His businesses all failed. His wife left him. A movie about his deeds was released several years after his death, where he would receive none of the benefits. He went to prison multiple times for simply refusing to hate Jews.

I think a lot of people like to think they're activists, but are sorely unprepared for doing this type of work, and then in truth become activists in name only. This is hard work. But without him, another thousand or so people would be on that death toll.

He took his position of extreme power- a Nazi owning a factory almost entirely operated by Jews, making oodles of money off that cheap slave labor- and said you know what? No. I'm not doing that. I can't save everyone, but as long as they are within my factory, you will not kill my workers. As long as I'm here you aren't harming one hair on the head of any Jew under my care. You're not sending or keeping them in Auschwitz. You're not randomly executing them for entertainment. They're people. You're not murdering them.

"Just following orders" they say. But they didn't have to. They could have helped. They could have did what he did, look around and say "what the fuck am I doing here", and stop. He did. They could have. They didn't.

I have mixed feelings about Zerxus in season 3 of TLOVM, but I’ve gotta say hearing him give a Totally Unbiased Account of EXU: Calamity with Definitely No Omissions Whatsoever was kind of funny. Like “ooh I thought I could count on my friends….they condemned our civilisation….” Ok Zerxus. Buddy. Last time I checked, Nydas was actually the only one trying to stop Laerryn from blighting the tree. You sat there like a chump and did not help whatsoever. And uh. “They condemned our civilisation with their hubris” ummm pal I think you’re missing an important detail there. Like yes the point of EXU: Calamity is that everyone played a role in the disaster, everyone was responsible in some ways for that ship crashing into the iceberg, but uh. Zerxus I think some people were maybe a little more responsible than others. Like, for example, the certain someone who pulled the Lord of the Hells into Exandria. I think that individual’s hubris is maaaaaybe a little bit more important than some of the other hubris on the table here.

And like, this isn’t me bashing the writing, I think it is in-character for TLOVM!Zerxus to say this, since he’s been a jaded miserable devil for a thousand years. But omg when he had the CHEEK to be like “in the chaos I found myself face-to-face with the Lord of Torment himself” like EXCUSE ME??? Buddy you just happened to “find yourself” face-to-face with Asmodeus huh??? Just coincidentally, on accident??? You were just taking a stroll around Avalir and he ran into you without warning??

Zerxus. Please. Be serious for a moment. Would you like to explain to Pike the exact circumstances of HOW you found yourself face-to-face with Asmodeus, hmmmmm? A certain “pulling Asmodeus through the tree and unleashing him upon the world” situation?

Like, I know it was meant to be a serious moment with lots of Calamity-related hype but like, it was really giving “Girl what were YOU doing at the devil’s sacrament” energy. In the most literal way possible

More about my relationship with queer history (& section 28) under the cut

Looking up history to make a fun queer historical rom-com opened my eyes to how my entire idea of the past in this country was way off.

It also made me realise that part of the reason queer history felt like such new, revelatory information was a law that banned it, which was still in place when I was at school.

Section 28 was put in place by Margaret Thatcher in the 80s, banning "promotion of homosexuality" in UK schools and local authorities. Local libraries were forbidden from stocking anything with LGBT content, and it effectively stopped teachers mentioning any queer history, leaving them scared to even accidentally mention a same-sex partner.

Although the law was finally repealed in the 00s, it cast a long shadow. Older teachers were used to it, history books conformed to it, and new teachers still feared homophobic backlash.

Today there's a huge and disturbing rise in anti-trans rhetoric and legislation being attempted in schools and beyond, and it mirrors the homophobic conversations of the 80s. The truth that we've always been here gets met with vitriol - and to be honest, also just outright surprise even by well-intentioned, otherwise widely-read cis and straight people I know, especially in older generations.

I feel like there's also the flipside: once I listened to a podcast where two american women, older than me, were both SHOCKED that anyone was ever executed in Britain for being gay?? For me the threat of execution (before 1824), exile or imprisonment (the two years of hard labour that famously lead to the death of Oscar Wilde) were the main, only things I grew up aware of about queer history.

At best, the queer history I saw growing up was absolute tragedy. Part of what was such a revelation when researching was reading historical accounts that hint at hidden queer histories, secret joys and long, complex lives.

So by the time I finished researching my historical romance book, I'd decided to make an illustrated history section at the back too - these pics are a mini version.

I wish more people knew about the real history we have and how far back it goes - I hope someone unfamiliar might be able to get get a tiny introduction, and recs for ways to get a clearer view of our past.

Late Night Introspection | Zayne/Reader

About: A drabble on Zayne's reasons for becoming a doctor. Was it for himself? Or was it.... for you?

Pairing: Zayne/Reader

Notes: Might be invalidated as the story goes on though haha... But I like the idea of Zayne deciding to be a doctor in order to protect you in ways you cannot.

“By helping her, Zayne… You help yourself.”

The words Grandma Josephine uttered on that fateful day still lingered in his mind, even hours after you’ve left the hospital. She made him promise to take care of you on her behalf, to be with you every step of the way as you lived your life. 

Like a parent giving their blessing to a potential spouse. 

Zayne ran his fingers through his tousled hair, mentally waving that stray thought away. Perhaps in a perfect world where tragedies such as these didn’t happen, she would’ve given him her blessing but… That was not the case now. And in a twisted way, if the disaster 14 years ago didn’t happen, he wouldn’t have met you.

14 years ago he made a decision, a decision that was made because of you. 

He still remembered the day when you proclaimed to everyone that you will become strong and become a hunter so you won’t have to rely on someone and be afraid when another disaster strikes, that you will be someone who would protect everyone around them. 

“I will be your protector one day! Just you guys watch!”

And in that moment, a thought appeared in the forefront of his mind–

“Then who protects the protector?”

He wasn’t the only one who had the same thought however. Caleb immediately interjected, snorting at your antics.

“Then who will protect you, dummy? What if you get injured?”

“I won’t! Because you two will have my back, right?”

“That’s not how it works–”

Indeed, that was not how the world worked. Even the mightiest hunter will fall, despite all the challenges they faced and overcame. And so when you turned to Zayne and asked him what he would be in the future, he simply said– 

“A doctor.” 

“Why?”

“Someone has to take care of you when you’re hurt.”

“I won’t get hurt!”

“Sure.”

So he did. The decision was made. He began his journey into the field of medicine and worked tirelessly to get here. Even though contact between you and him lessened over the years, he had never forgotten his decision, his promise to be by your side when you needed him the most.

As Zayne gained renown and respect within the field over the years, many research facilities and academic institutions had tried to lure him to have him work for them. He refused them all, however. He joined the field not for money, nor for fame and respect. 

But for you.

“You’re good at not giving into temptation.” You jokingly said then. He had no intentions from straying from his path, especially not when you became a hunter despite all the heart conditions you had. He had specifically chosen to study cardiology because he was aware of the problems you had since the disaster. And while there are many capable doctors in said field, he just couldn’t rest easy. 

The thought of you being transferred to someone else’s care made him apprehensive. Why should you rely on another’s care when he could do it instead? 

When he knows you and your heart better than the others ever will?

The sudden ‘ping!’ resounded throughout his office, bringing him out of the recess of his thoughts. He picked up his phone and the corners of his mouth lifted when he saw who it was, contacting him this late at night. 

“Sorry for calling so late earlier. I just needed to know the truth… I’m still reading through them.”

“Go to sleep, it’s late. The documents will still be there when you wake up.”

Just like he will when you wake up. 

He will always be here, as long as you need him.

20 years ago, on this day the first volume of Durarara!! (デュラララ!!) was released in Japan. This volume contains the Dollars/Mika Harima arc, which is the start and readers' first meeting with such a well written plot, complex characters and artsy language.

Happy 20th anniversary to Durarara!! It will be forever my favorite media; no book, anime or manga can come close to the place that Durarara!! has in my heart. It will remain as a unique and one of a kind work, not only to me but to many other readers as well.

A small smirk played along Angela's pale lips, her head tilted upward. As ironic as it was, sitting on top of a ledge for the finished bridge in London gave her a lovely view of the fireworks display that was created by humans to celebrate the New Year.

She listened to the Soul Reaper beside her, not once turning her head until he asked her a question directly.

Her eyes close for a moment, wings that were once tucked behind her opened wide behind her as she wrapped one wing around Hitsugaya. She would take care to keep him under her watchful wing.

"Hmn..purification takes time and planning, dear. There are key events that must occur first. Worry not. I have everything prepared. Not all are worth mercy. Do keep that in mind when we begin. This world is filled with unchecked corruption that must be dealt with. This corruption is spreading like a toxic cancer among humanity.

When the true doomsday comes, we will have much to do. For now, let those who believe they can control the masses poison their people. They will regret not using their free will to their advantage."

Angela leans a little closer towards him, a gentle chilled hand caressing his cheek, "Just promise me one thing."

She takes a moment to ensure that he was looking at her before speaking once more, "When the time comes, don't hesitate. There will be young ones within the purification. Their minds poisoned by bigotry and hatred. The purification will show them the error of their ways. I know how you feel for the souls of the younger generation, but you must set aside personal feelings. Do you think you can do that for me, dearest Hitsugaya?"
