I just finished a barely-interrupted binge of all four seasons of this show, and now I hardly know what to do with myself. A while ago I began research for a project on true crime television, which brought me into contact with an unscripted show veteran who strongly recommended UnReal, a drama about a field producer on a Bachelor-like program who is both extremely good at her job, and extremely mentally ill. It was way better than whatever I expected. I don't watch a ton of TV--which is not a declaration of my superiority in any dimension, it's just that I need to spend most of my time on movies, and I'm kind of particular (not due to "good taste" necessarily, just particular). UnReal initially comes off like a regular old cable show--to me it looks more or less like a CW product or something, with no hint of auteurship like there is with Fargo or Better Call Saul or whatever else usually lures me to television--but the writing pulls absolutely zero punches and I could not take my eyes off it. There is an occasional lull where things are more predictably soapy and I'd think "OK, well that was nice while it lasted," and then as soon as my guard was down something legitimately shocking would happen and I'd be back in my seat, watching unblinkingly.

The show is based on actual experiences of co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, a one-time producer on The actual Bachelor, which I only found out after the fact but I was thinking all along, "This is so grotesque that I'm sure it (or something like it) really happens." UnReal's other mastermind is Marti Noxon, who has credits on a lot of dark and/or construably feminist shows that have met with more success (don't ask me, I thought Sharp Objects was OK and I've never been attracted to Buffy, I just can't handle anything Joss Whedon-flavored), and she seems to have a real knack for telling psychologically realistic stories of seriously disturbed women. Which I appreciate a lot. My main complaint about UnReal was just that I wanted MORE, of all of it. Parts of the core mythology are just so fascinating that I craved a deep dive into all the details and consequences that I guess was just not in the cards for something with a large cast and a ton of moving parts. I'll just have to luxuriate in the intrigue since this ended in 2018.

...On which note I'll say that I think UnReal is colored significantly by Trump-era anxiety in ways that are more and less obvious. The show's chief concerns are more generally about the contributions of reality TV and social media to a culture of widespread bullying, but there is definitely something more specific in there about living under the reign of an unapologetic rapist who validates and empowers rapists at large, and feeling like the only way to preserve yourself in that world is to become a predator yourself. But anyway, the one question that is still burning my brain is about the fact that some of the set dressing features Silver Saaremaeel and Kaya Saaremaeel's gothy webcomic Run Freak Run. Which I've never read, actually I specifically found out about it because of posters hanging on office walls in UnReal. I really want someone to tell me how a gothy webcomic made it into the scenery of a major Lifetime drama. My pathetic websleuthing skills have failed to turn up active accounts for either of the comic's creators, so if anyone has a line on this information, please let me know! Meanwhile, you can watch UnReal on Tubi, the king of streaming sites.

Two nonprofits have sued a white nationalist hate group in North Dakota, alleging that it committed racial intimidation by defacing businesses and public property around the city of Fargo with the group’s logo and other graffiti.
The lawsuit filed against Patriot Front in federal court on Friday alleges that the group, two of the group’s leaders and 10 others violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, which the complaint says “was designed to prevent precisely the kind of conspiratorial racist activity that Defendants perpetrated in this case.”
The lawsuit, filed by the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, the Immigrant Development Center and the center’s executive director, says Patriot Front also posted “anti-immigrant propaganda” days after a man of Syrian descent fatally shot a Fargo police officer and wounded two others in July. The suit seeks a jury trial and damages of an amount to be determined at trial, as well as attorneys’ fees and other relief.
No attorney is listed on the case docket for Patriot Front or the other defendants. Attorney Jason Lee Van Dyke, who has represented members of Patriot Front in other cases, did not respond to a message left with his office. Attorney Robert Sargent, who recently represented group members at a criminal trial in Idaho, said he knew nothing of the lawsuits against Patriot Front.
Patriot Front “is probably one of the most active white nationalist hate groups in the U.S.,” said Rachel Carroll Rivas of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors such groups but did not participate in the lawsuit.
The group emphasizes “public actions” such as posting racist flyers, holding demonstrations and engaging in public displays “meant to make people fearful,” said Carroll Rivas, deputy director for research and analysis with the center’s Intelligence Project.
The lawsuit filed Friday alleges that Patriot Front members vandalized businesses and public property in the summer and fall of 2022. It specifically cites Patriot Front logos and designs spray-painted on the International Market Plaza, an indoor market area for immigrant business owners, and defaced murals, including one depicting Black women wearing hijabs.
As a result of the vandalism, the complaint says, shopkeepers have lost customers, reduced their hours and fear for their safety.
Patriot Front’s actions “were intended to cause fear and deprive others — especially immigrants of color — of their rights, and, unfortunately, Patriot Front achieved that result,” the complaint states.
Vandalism also occurred near a Liberian-owned restaurant, in a pedestrian tunnel, and at a coffee shop and arts collective owned by LGBTQ people and people of color, according to the complaint.
Recent vandalism took place after the July 14 fatal shooting in Fargo carried out by 37-year-old Mohamad Barakat, a Syrian national who came to the U.S. in 2012 on an asylum request and became a U.S. citizen in 2019. North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley said last month that Barakat’s motive remains unknown, but he appeared to be targeting police officers in what authorities have said was likely part of a larger, planned attack.
Other lawsuits in recent years have cited the Ku Klux Klan Act, including cases brought against former President Donald Trump and others in connection with the siege of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
A Black teacher and musician cited the law last month in his federal lawsuit alleging that Patriot Front members surrounded and assaulted him in a coordinated and racially motived attack last year in Boston.
The Reconstruction-era law seeks to protect the civil rights of marginalized groups of people. The statute has been cited in employment-law cases and in contract-dispute cases between corporations, and also in lawsuits alleging violence and terroristic fear since the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, said Ayesha Bell Hardaway, professor of law at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Law and director of the school’s Social Justice Law Center.
“It’s important, I think, for us to be mindful of the fact that violence ... and terrorism related to white supremacy isn’t a relic of the past,” she told The Associated Press.

I called Wells Fargo to try and get this thing with RushMyPassport sorted out and I was basically told to go fuck myself?????? I was saying over and over that the money never came back and the agent kept saying my money was "only temporarily taken but was given back", and he even said I can get a pen and paper to do the math, but ok, here's the thing: so if I allegedly never got charged, how come my ending daily balance is under the alleged refund amount? Huh? If I was never charged and you can see a record of the transaction, how come my ending daily balance was under that amount? And then my mom is trying to help me and says can we speak to a supervisor and he says, quote "i have a complaints department i can forward you to"
What the fuck? What the absolute fuck? The people charging me money say they never took it and my bank says it was only temporarily taken out but my daily balance was never over the amount charged so how can they say that??? Was i fucking robbed??? Was there some kind of glitch and my money is GONE GONE? IT WAS ALMOST $900 I CANT BELIEVE THIS like. Ugh. I. I just want to throw up i only have like 140 in my account and 60 of that is going to my baggage for my flight AND I will have to take a taxi from the bus stop whatever to my motel and. Yeah. Uh. I hate this. I have no money and both parties are saying yes I do and I. I guess I have to donate plasma or something. Maybe I. Maybe I need to borrow money from people and pay them back later?

A new lawsuit accuses banking giant Wells Fargo of overcharging thousands of customers on credit card interest rates and fees for more than a decade.
The class action lawsuit, filed by plaintiffs Carmin Nowlin, Tamika Haley and Jesus Rodriguez, alleges the bank charged active US military service members interest rates and fees that were above levels set by the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA).
The SCRA ensures that any debts a service member incurred before being called to active duty will have their interest rates reduced to 6%. This reduction applies from the date of deployment and lasts throughout the entire period of active duty. Additionally, banks are required to permanently forgive interest over 6%, under the act.
According to the plaintiffs, Wells Fargo specifically marketed itself to service members – particularly those who were being deployed overseas – and quietly overcharged for more than a decade.
“Defendant breached its statutory and contractual duties to America’s fighting forces by charging interest rates and fees that were too high, allowing unlawful charges to improperly inflate servicemembers’ principal balances, and charging compound interest on these inflated balances. Defendant then concealed overcharges from the thousands of military families victimized by Defendant’s practices...
Due to Defendant’s misrepresentations to Plaintiffs and class members and concealment of SCRA violations and overcharges, Plaintiffs and class members did not discover, and had no reasonable opportunity to discover, the SCRA violations until 2022.
Defendant’s violations at issue were self-concealing, which is evidenced, in part, by the fact that they continued the nationwide practice of overcharging active military servicemembers for more than a decade.”
Wells Fargo has not released a statement on the allegations.
The bank has faced several lawsuits and complaints in recent months, including customer who says the banking giant left her hanging for seven months after thousands of dollars was stolen from her account.

i hate spending money but i do like getting stuff i need
i also got to smell the body washes cuz i’m almost out of body wash and i can’t afford to replace the one i have cuz it’s a fancy body wash from sephora that i got as an xmas gift
but i found an inexpensive one that smells yummy so 👍 I didn’t buy it cuz i’m gonna wait until i’m closer to running out. i need to save the rest of what i have right now for weed
the only reason i felt comfortable finally biting the bullet and getting some stuff from the store is because wells fargo sent me a $17 service fee refund because apparently they got complaints about the wording in their service fee policy being unclear or something? So they sent refunds to people for whatever applied to their whatever. idk i read the thing earlier i forget. But that paid for about half my stuff today.
also i decided to go shopping today instead of waiting because i got $2 off my purchase with a coupon that expires today

Former Wells Fargo Senior Executive Carrie Tolstedt Agrees to Settle SEC Fraud Charges for Misleading Investors About Abusive Sales Practices to Inflate a Key Performance Metric Washington, DC (STL.News) The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced its settlement with the former head of Wells Fargo & Co.’s Community Bank, Carrie L. Tolstedt, in which she has agreed to pay a $3 million penalty stemming from charges brought in 2020 for her role in allegedly misleading investors about the success of the Community Bank, Wells Fargo’s core business.  The SEC previously settled related charges against Wells Fargo and its former CEO and Chairman, John Stumpf. According to the SEC’s complaint against Tolstedt, from mid-2014 through mid-2016, Tolstedt publicly described and endorsed Wells Fargo’s “cross-sell metric” as a means of measuring Wells Fargo’s financial success despite the fact that this metric was inflated by accounts and services that were unused, unneeded, or unauthorized.  The complaint further alleges that Tolstedt knew the cross-sell metric did not accurately track accounts or products that customers needed or used, since she was aware of misconduct at the Community Bank that led to bankers pushing products on customers that they did not need or want, including the unauthorized opening of accounts.  The complaint alleges that Tolstedt made misleading public statements to investors at Wells Fargo’s investor conferences in 2014 and 201, and signed misleading sub-certifications as to the accuracy of Wells Fargo’s public disclosures when she knew or was reckless in not knowing that statements in those disclosures regarding Wells Fargo’s cross-sell metric were materially false and misleading. “Companies do not act on their own.  Where the facts warrant it, we will hold senior executives accountable for conduct that violates the securities laws,” said Monique C. Winkler, Regional Director of the SEC’s San Francisco Regional Office. Tolstedt, without admitting or denying the SEC’s allegations, agreed to a final judgment permanently enjoining her from violating or aiding and abetting violations of the antifraud and other provisions of the federal securities laws and imposing a permanent officer-and-director bar.  In addition to the $3 million civil penalty, Tolstedt agreed to pay a disgorgement of $1,459,076 plus prejudgment interest of $447,874.  The SEC will combine this money with $500 million paid by Wells Fargo and the $2.5 million penalty paid by Stumpf in previous settlements and distribute the sum to harmed investors.  The settlement is subject to court approval. The SEC’s complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.  The litigation was conducted by Susan LaMarca, Erin Wilk, Victor Hong, John Roscigno, and Horace Austin of the SEC’s San Francisco Regional Office.  The case was supervised by Jason H.
