Familiar with the term “debt of gratitude”? This is the concept of people paying back each other for every act of kindness received. Guess what, the cycle never stops. A better way to make things happen is to pay the kindness forward. Imagine how beautiful the world will be if everybody practices this! 😉

When we struggle and face difficulties, we often ask, “Why?” 🤔 Truth be told, this question is too difficult to answer. Knowing the reason why certain things happen cannot be answered at times. So, instead of asking why, start asking with WHAT. Ask yourself, what is the situation teaching you? It’s time to see your difficulties as challenges and opportunities to grow! ❤️

Feelin’ My Self Care💁
As part of our Mental Wellbeing Week, brought to you by Welfare Officer Scarlett Langdon, we're running a #FeelingMyselfCare workshop. This workshop is designed to aid female students in discussing and engaging in radical self-care.
Tumblr media
The workshop is open to self-identifying women and non-binary people only, led by NUS's Women's Officer Susuana.
The aim of the workshop is to:
- Deconstruct the concept of "burn out" and learn about difference causes, effects and how to tackle it.
- Discuss different definitions of self-care and self-love and the barriers people face when engaging in them.
- Learn practical ways to look after yourself and how to collectively support each other's self-care.

Beyond the Cliches: My Practical Lesson in Wellbeing
When LSESU first announced The Wellbeing Project, I was excited. In a high pressure environment like LSE, where the consistent swirl of information bouncing around in our heads includes classes, jobs, internships, and more, a focus on the whole person is incredibly important.
Tumblr media
However, my excitement was tinged with a dose of hesitation. Would the week's events provide practical solutions to the obstacles blocking me from reaching the much desired stress-free total healthy lifestyle? As I set off to my first event of the week, a chill-out session, I was about to find out.
Moving Beyond Platitudes
I wasn't sure what to expect from my first taste of the Wellbeing Project. Billed as a chance to 'loosen up for your deadlines' and 'pick up destressing tips,' I suppose I thought I was in for another overview lecture on healthy living - eat well, exercise often, the platitudes we all could recite in our sleep.
Boy, was I wrong.
The session, led by personal trainer Ali from the LSESU Gym, kicked off with a simple task. Walk around and pay attention to how your body feels.
It's not something we frequently do. But as I would soon learn, listening, paying attention, and connecting to your body are crucial first steps on the path toward destressing.
Figuring Out Root Causes
The session as a whole fit right in to our university's motto (I say this with profuse apologies to students who recently made it through LSE100 and have no doubt heard this phrase ad nauseam over the past few months): to know the causes of things.
Most of the anatomy went over this politics and communication student's head. But a focus on the starting point for the many aches and pains that come from spending hours on end in a sedentary position sitting at a desk was most welcome.
The session equipped me with the knowledge of the body's trigger points and the techniques needed to address these painful spots, freeing up tightness that can lead to larger programs.
On the Way to Healthy Living
After just one hour, I found myself leaving with a bit more spring in my step, buoyed certainly by the exercises themselves, but also by the knowledge I could move steps closer to the at times seemingly mythical healthy lifestyle.
Eating for a Purpose
To wrap up LSE's week of stress relief, exercise, and nutrition, I sat in on a Purposeful Eating Workshop.
It seems the headlines are always screaming something new about the science of nutrition. It's probably possible to find a study to back up just about any claim you'd like to make when it comes to what to eat. So for me, the essential lesson of the session was not any one specific statement about how certain foods affect the body, but rather the reminder to once again pay attention to how the day's meals made me feel. Not my friends, not superstars from the world of sport, but me.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to a healthy living regimen. Seems obvious. But when I actually stopped to think about what that meant in practice, I realised trial and error was the way to a wellbeing plan that worked, not a careful attempt at following the latest fitness or food fad.
Next Steps
For me, it's nearly impossible to start or stick to healthy habits, especially when it comes to nutrition, when I'm feeling sore, dragged down by minor aches that cause major mental roadblocks. The Wellbeing Project offered me an understanding of how to tackle these aches, leaving me energised, smiling, and ready to take on my wellbeing goals.
