WELL IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED

This theory is actually something I arrived at while developing stuff for my ninjago god au (titled transcendent AU for the uninitiated), however I also just apply it as a general headcanon for all of ninjago, and it works in conjunction with canon just fine, so I will explain it as it is relevant to the canon series. I also suppose its less of a theory as it is a headcanon anyways, but its existence can explain some mild oddities within the story, such as the one mentioned in the earlier post I reblogged.

In short, this theory suggests two things: that all elemental powers are actually fragments of a higher being's soul, and that the memories and personality of a living being are not part of a person's soul itself, but is a separate essence (usually) attached to one's soul, which can be removed.

That's all a bit complicated to explain at once though, so let me break it into the constituent parts.

Elemental Powers are Soul Fragments

In the previously mentioned AU, this idea originally existed to explain the origin of elemental powers, as having sourced themselves as fragments of the First Spinjitzu Master's soul. Obviously with the advent of Dragon's Rising, this theory is pretty untenable, but I still think it holds water to suggest that elemental powers are fragments of the Source Dragons' souls.

Some reasons for this would be that elemental powers seem to display some, very minor amount of will. Not enough to really make them sentient, but enough that if taken, they always return to their rightful host as long as they are not trapped within some sort of binding object, as well as having the capability to choose a new host if the previous one is incapable. If they were portions of a greater, complete sentient being, this would make sense. We also see that the elements display some level of interconnectivity, particularly between ones which share a source, but also some which do not. Some elemental masters share near identical abilities, some have abilities which entirely cross over into each other, such as Nya and Zane. Some even seem to be able to pass power between each other, as is the case with the Golden Power. This would make sense if they were all ultimately part of the same set of seven God Souls; separate, but not completely severed from their source or from each other.

I also theorize that the source dragons themselves were once one complete being, as the seven-headed dragon illustration in the tournament temple suggests, but thats a bit off-topic for this post

now for the second part,

Memories and Personality are separate from one's Soul

If the elemental powers are fragments of a soul, then how come elemental masters only share the power of the Sources, not the memories and emotions? Well, the answer is that those things are not embodied by the soul itself, nor solely contained in the living body (ie brain), but is rather a separate entity unto itself!

The soul, to put it way too simply, is just the battery powering someone's spiritual existence. The memories and personality, the essence of who a person is, needs a battery to continue existing at all. However, that battery doesn't have to exist for the exclusive purpose of powering a person. It can just as easily be siphoned off to give other living souls a little boost (as with elemental powers), or to even power an object given the right container. In this case, the essence is going to be incentivized to stick to the greater portion of remaining soul, and not the little bit being given away. It can also (hypothetically) be scrubbed away from the soul entirely, though doing this on purpose would obviously be,,, Unethical. But the reverse can also occur, if the soul is being damaged or destroyed in some way, the essence can jump ship to a different power source entirely, one that may not even be a soul at all, at least not perhaps in our traditional understanding of it.

So ok, I'm sure you're thinking "Cal that sounds really cool, but all that hardly seems to have anything to do with ninjago" and well,,, you're correct BUT here are some canon things that this whole perception of "souls" and "essence" thing actually becomes relevant to

In DOTD, Cole is slowly being forgotten by his friends, and as a result is losing bits of himself, completely disappearing for some lengths of time. This could be explained as his essence losing its grip on his soul, as a ghost's main source of power (the cursed realm) no longer exists and he's constantly fighting his soul's natural inclination to move on to the departed realm.

Similarly, this could explain how Ocean Nya and Nyad function, why they lose themselves to the sea so thoroughly over time. The essence of the sea overwhelms their natural memories and personalities, literally eroding it away until all that's left is an empty soul.

Plenty of characters pass their elemental powers on peacefully, but times when the power is ripped from characters unnaturally or unwillingly tend to be portrayed as painful, even if the powers eventually return. This is because the element is essentially a secondary soul, a power source bonded to the main one, which also influences the essence. Passing willingly means the essence gets the chance to choose to stay with the main soul, but passing unwillingly means potential damage to the essence, and even potential damage to the main soul.

It's a bit too early to tell as we still need more details, but with all the talk of shatterspin destroying one's goodness, its possible a less,,, inherent-morality sounding way to explain this is to describe it as shattering one's essence, destroying parts of one's core personality as it breaks through to use the pure, unfiltered power of one's soul as a weapon.

Im sure there's probably more examples that I just can't think of rn. Like i said this is not so much a "theory" as it is a headcanon I suppose, but I just think its neat imagining an actual system under which elemental powers, souls, and personalities interact. If you made it to the end of this you're a fucking trooper, and I will gladly accept more specific questions about this if anybody has them!

love me or hate me you cannot deny the vision behind transfem kieran. come on party people pick it up. she is a woman who is naturally more comfortable around other women and is deeply nervous around men. she has no stereotypically "manly" traits that are portrayed to the gang. shes "weak" and she rarely leaves camp, much like the rest of the women. most of her friends in camp are women. she is yelled at and nagged at to work more than the rest of the men (besides maybe bill, sean, and uncle, though theirs is excused by perceived ineptitude or laziness. kieran is perceived as inept maybe, but its honestly rare i find her not working around camp), much like how the other women are pressured to work more than the men. she only gets nervous around other women when she is flirted with because she does not understand that being a woman who loves women is a thing she can be, so when women flirt with her it reinforces her role as a man, thus making her uncomfortable. she mostly pines for mary-beth from afar because being a queer means being a freak and a degenerate in 1899 and such a fine lady as miss gaskill deserves better than a freak and a degenerate!!

my mother was much more supportive than i anticipated when i came out to her. but there was still a day years ago when she said to me, “i don’t like the idea of calling you a lesbian. it feels icky.”

and i realized, i’d been simply calling myself gay all along and subconsciously avoiding the L-word entirely. she was the one to bring it up. and when she did, i quietly was sucker punched in the face about it. i had been avoiding calling myself what i am and had to unpack all of the reasons why i was scared of the word “lesbian.” why it felt so loaded. outside of online spaces, the word still felt so pejorative. so intimidating and scary.

now, my mom has come around even more. and i go out of my way to call myself a lesbian with fervent joy and celebration. and i hope that just that small act will help others to grapple with all of the things standing in the way of embracing who they are with that same joy. i hope that we can lead each other through the gauntlet that is comp het and the loaded feelings people have built up around the word “lesbian.” i hope people can see that what they’re experiencing is normal and there is a happy life on the other side. and it will be okay. better than okay, even.
