Little things I've noticed on my rewatch of 1x01
So, it's been a while since I've actually watched the show and I've started to miss Crowley and Aziraphale something fierce. So I've finally started at the beginning and here are some small things that stood out or that I didn't notice to that extend before. Nothing revolutionary, but maybe you'll enjoy / be devastated by it anyway.
Eden: Crawley saw Aziraphale before their talk on the wall since he mentions seeing him with a sword. They kept hanging around the garden for a while, but haven't talked that much since Az asks Crawley's name?
After receiving the Antichrist: Crowley is devastated. The way he days "Already?!" gets me every time. Is barely able to keep it together infront of Hastur and Ligur (terrific acting by David here). Immediately tries to call Aziraphale.
Park, going up the stairs: "It's not some little temptation I've asked you to cover for me while you're in Edinburgh for the festival". Their arrangement is so casually lived in by then. And the way Aziraphale lights up when he's invited to lunch. Also, Crowley's hair is stunning in the sun here.
Tumblr media
After lunch: Az gets totally distracted by Crowley's company, forgets all about Armageddon or their disagreement over it. Wants to open a bottle for a "special occasion", tone indicating inside joke / hidden meaning. There's a theory about that being sexual, but while I support that headcanon I think it's more of a joke along the lines that it isn't actually a special occasion, because they drink together all the time.
Infront of the bookshop: "this is purely social" Sure Az, as if that makes it any better in heaven's judgement. Now you're just being silly! (see what I did there?)
Making the pact: How cute is Crowley here?!? I already knew that and think about it constantly, but seeing it again is something else still. I mean, seriously:
Tumblr media
Babysitting Warlock: How somehow Nanny Ashtorath is able to sing so much better than I've ever heard David Tennant do (no offense) is a proper mystery to me.
Meeting on the bus: Why don't they talk on their job as nanny and gardener lol? They must have endless opportunities and still they hang out even more. Ok, probably more like a plot hole for coolness than being meant romantically on purpose here, but still.
Bus and dinosaur park: Crowley can't bring himself to tell Az the whole ugly truth about the antichrists power / the dog not to frighten him too much. This is really sweet and very telling about how he sees him as kind of naive and innocent. Also, he's protective snek. Another amazing thing here is how he doesn't even consider killing the Antichrist himself although he is been working against hell all along anyway. Ties nicely to the bandstand scene later.
In the shop: "Crowley: Would I lie to you? - Aziraphale: Obviously, you're a demon, that's what you do". While his is pretty hurtful towards Crowley and typically blindsided of Aziraphale, it's also so devastatingly accepting of him as well.
In the shop at the end ("he's named the dog"): Crowley is really, really afraid and that respectively makes Az nervous (the looming doom in his delivery of "welcome to the end times").
That was all for this round... In general it blew my mind how much of their story is already in episode one!
And I'll never get tired of mentioning how David and Micheal disappear completely into their characters. I try to admire their work in the moment, but I keep forgetting it's them. Only because I have seen so much of them by now can I spot them as the actors in tiny moments that last mere half-seconds. That's always a weird triumph. "ha! I've seen a glimpse of Micheal's smile there!" or "the way Crowley says 'helly hellhound' sounded very David" and that's basically it.

Adeline Cabot-Novak
The Marine
Tumblr media
Adeline had been sent to DC training groups of soldiers, since returning from Iraq 9 months ago, her superiors felt it necessary that they give her time of the constant sandy hell holes she’d been going between for the past 8 years of her service.
They’d only just recovered from a joint training weekend with the Navy when Adeline saw a familiar figure in the distance. “Corporal, can you take the them, I’ll be back.”
The man nodded, as Adeline made her way over to the approaching group of people, “Special Agent Abigail Borin.” The agent smiled at her niece the marine stood taunt,
“Sargent Adeline Novak.” Until the tense atmosphere dissolved with a laugh and the pair embraced,
“Wait you two know each other?” Abi turned to the team of NCIS Agents with a small grin,
“Sargent Novak here is my niece. Ads meets NCIS Special Agents Gibbs, DiNozzo, McGee and David, we’re here to ask about Lance Corporal Bennett, we’ve been told you knew each other?”
Adeline nodded her expression cool, “We were aquatinted but that’s where our interactions ended, Lance Corporal Bennett wasn’t exactly welcoming toward female soldier, especially those who outranked him, why do you ask?”
Abi’s eyes grazed the floor with a small grimace, “He was murdered they found him in the water just off the pier, CGIS and NCIS, are working together to catch his killer.”
Adeline nodded although Abi noticed the dissociated expression she harboured, “Theres a few people you can talk to that he was close with, but if you wanna find his killer, I’d suggest pulling his file, last I checked there’s a number of complaints against him.”
Abi nodded and that was what Adeline had assumed would be the end of their interaction until she and her Aunt got together to go for lunch or dinner, as they often did when either had a spare few hours.
“Sargent Novak, you’re being temporarily assigned to work with NCIS until they find Lance Corporal Bennetts killer, you’ll report to Special Agent Gibbs immediately.” Adeline nodded like the good soldier she was although she couldn’t help the growing anger in the pit of her stomach.
Walking into the NCIS office Adeline found Special Agent DiNozzo combing through her military personnel file, although there wasn’t much of it considering most of the file was redacted.
“Sargent Adeline Novak, been in 6 years, had more medals than you can count of two hands. Did you know that Agent Borin had a sister, and a twin sister at that.” Adeline smirked Agents David and McGee also crowding the screen,
“Who is happily married to my mother, you wanna find a date DiNozzo, I’d keep out of my family tree considering most of my siblings are either married, engaged or not interested in men, unless you want to try my younger brother Will.” The three all jumped, DiNozzo discreetly turning off the screen returning its contents to that of the case at hand.
“Sargent Novak, it’s a pleasure.” The soldier hummed, eyes glazing over the office until she saw her Aunt walking toward them,
“Ads what are you doing here?” The marine smiled with a light shrug,
“Temporary reassignment, Gibbs requested my help.” Abi nodded the pair divulging into quiet conversation until Tony turned his attention to the pair,
“So Borin, you, me dinner tonight?” Adeline didn’t even give her aunt an opportunity to respond when Tony found himself flat on his ass, groaning. A dime spinning next to him, Ziva gazed at Adeline with a reserved adoration, she’d put Tony on his ass with nothing but a dime found in her pocket, hitting his temple to render him on his ass, eating carpet.
“Not happening DiNozzo, family rules state you need family pro mission and that my friend is something you certainly don’t have.” Abi flicked her ear although she herself was smirking,
“Ads play nice.” The soldier nodded her attention returning to the case files in her hand,
“Yes ma’am.”
They’d located a suspect briskly, an ex-arsonist and recreational bomb maker who seemed to think lightly of the experience. Abi had already been removed as per Gibbs request the last time all too fresh in his memory, Adeline however had stayed.
Gibbs hadn’t known that Adeline was there on that boat, that the reason she wore long sleeves even in warm weather was because underneath her skin still retained horrific memories of the experience.
“I never understood what the big deal was, it was a fun we were kids just messing around.” Adeline scoffed,
“So the kid that died because of a bomb you set off he was having fun was he?” The man shrugged eyes glazing the table,
“That boy was five years old and he died because a piece of the bomb you set off pierced his heart, you killed him and that was just fun?!” Her voice was raised, her cheeks a dark crimson as she restrained herself from launching toward the man and causing some serious damage.
“It was a lifetime ago, I served my time! I joined the Navy I made up for what I did!” Adeline’s jaw clenched as she pulled out a lighter from her pocket and locked the door to the interrogation room.
“You know hand sanitiser contains ethanol, sometimes upwards of 80% of the substance is pure ethanol.” She revealed a small bottle from one of her many pocket a malicious smirk dancing on her lips.
She could hear the banging on the door but that didn’t dissuade her, “And ethanol well I don’t know if you know this but it’s very flammable, it glows a light blue colour, very pretty.”
Unscrewing the lid of the hand sanities she poured the contents of the bottle onto his lap, the lighter lid being flicked backwards with a satisfying echo from the metal.
“Tell me the name of the soldier that killed Lance Corporal Bennett, or you’ll be losing something I think you’d much rather keep.” Terrified the man spate out a name and Adeline shrugged putting the lighter away and opening the door.
“What the hell Novak.” The Sargent glared at Gibbs,
“I got you a name.”
When the case was over Adeline was standing in front of the mirror of the gym, her jacket lay on the counter. Her entire right side had a combination of 2nd and 3rd degree burns, the scar tissue still prominent against her tanned skin.
“Addy?” Adeline shook from her memory the flashbacks draining the cloud from her face.
“Hey Aunt Abs, what can I do from you?” Abi couldn’t speak she simply stared at the scars, her fingers lightly tracing her shoulder, down to her forearm.
“Abi-“ The former marine shook her head, but she remained silent, cautious, she’d seen them once when they’d first been inflicted but Adeline had done her best to conceal them from everyone since.
Adeline noticed her shock and caution shrugging off her loose tee, revealing the entirety of her abdomen and chest, pressing her Aunt’s hand against the rough skin.
“Its okay, they don’t hurt much anymore, I’m okay.” Abi nodded her hand trailing upwards to her neck and cheek before she finally pulled her niece into her arms.
“I love you so much Adeline Cabot-Novak.” Adeline nodded into Abi’s shoulder,
“I know, I love you too, and I miss her.” The tears glistened in Abi’s eyes,
“I know you do kiddo, I do too.”
Adeline would remain in the Marine’s for another 14 years serving a total of 20 years until she was shot in the line of duty as Gunnery Sargent Adeline Novak, receiving an honourable discharge.
Aged 38 she turned to her Aunt with a charming smile, and soon enough she found herself an Agent at CGIS the right hand of Special Agent Abigail Borin.
“Come on Kid, we’ve got a case.” Adeline chuckled with a curt nod,
“I’m 38 years old and you’re still calling me kid.”
“Because you’re still my baby Buck.”
“I hate that nickname.”
“I know you do Buck.”

St. David’s Day Special: The Dragon Prophecy
~ ~
Welcome to Celtic Month! For the entire month of March, the Spring Vignettes series will be dedicated entirely to Celtic homage vignettes. Non-Celtic pieces will resume in April.
Quick clarification: It’s pronounced Keltic, unless it’s a sports team; and even then, any linguists in the room will cringe if you pronounce it Seltic.
Our first Celtic Month piece celebrates St. David’s Day, on March 1st, the national day of Wales. Have some cheese toast! Pet a dragon! Kiss a Welshman, if you can find one.
Before you read what the piece means to me, share what it means to _you_. I’m just the artist; you’re the beholder.
~ ~
The Welsh are the survivors of the Celtic Britons, who were the inhabitants of all southern Britain before the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes invaded and established what became England. “Welsh” is an Anglo-Saxon term; it means “other people” or “foreigners”, which is ironic, considering the Germanic-speaking peoples were the foreigners in the native lands of the Britons.
There is certainly no more famous Welshman than King Arthur Pendragon, a legendary king of yore who supposedly ruled Britain between the retreat of the Romans and the invasion of the Saxons. His legend, much-developed over the centuries, became well-known throughout Europe in later times.
A notable legend tells of the building of Dinas Emrys, a castle on a hill by the Glaslyn river. By some accounts, it was built by Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur; by other accounts, it was Vortigern, the same foolish king of the Britons who later invited the Saxons into Britain as mercenaries to defend the Britons from the Picts.
After the king had chosen the hill on which the castle would stand, his builders went to work; but every day, they built up the walls, only for them to topple overnight. No progress could be made. At length, the king asked his wisemen to find the cause and the solution to the problem.
His wisemen told him that for the building to succeed, a sacrifice would be necessary; and the sacrifice must be a boy not sired by mortal man. Such a boy existed; a young boy named Merlin, or Ambrosius, the baptized son of a devil, who would go on to be known for his abilities in the magic arts.
(Foundation sacrifices were once an incredibly widespread custom; we know from archaeological evidence that the burying of a human victim under the foundation of an important building was practiced in ancient Ireland. Similar legends are told in Romania, Greece, Japan, and elsewhere. Animals were later buried under foundations after human sacrifices ceased.)
The boy was brought to the hill; and the king’s wisemen told the king to sacrifice him to appease the heathen gods so that the castle could be build. But the boy laughed at their advice, and told the king he knew much better. He told the king that if a hole were dug, there would be found a deep, dark pool; and in that pool, there would be found two dragons, one red, one white; and it was the fighting of these dragons that shook the hill each night and made the walls collapse. The king had a deep hole dug; and indeed, there was found a deep, dark pool; and from that pool indeed emerged two dragons, one red, one white.
Freed from their imprisonment, the dragons fought viciously, until, despite being the lesser of the dragons, the red dragon defeated the white dragon, and drove it out of the land across the sea.
The boy then prophesied that, just as the red dragon triumphed over the white dragon, so the Britons would triumph over the invading Saxons.
And they did; until the death of King Arthur at the hands of his son Mordred, whereafter, the Saxons finally defeated the Britons, and drove them into the western mountains.
The great Welsh sagas, the Mabinogion, tell about how the two dragons originally became trapped under the site of Dinas Emrys, when an ancient Welsh king intoxicated them with a cauldron of ale and buried them to silence their deafening shrieking.

'If last week was frantic, fast, and offering a wide open welcome mat to Doctor Who fans new and old, Wild Blue Yonder felt like a demonstration of what the show can do and has done. First half hour? Good. Second half hour? Great.
We left the Doctor and Donna – David Tennant and Catherine Tate – in a TARDIS out of control at the end of last week’s The Star Beast. Wild Blue Yonder, the middle part of the 60th anniversary trilogy of Doctor Who, initially took things from there just via, er, 1666. Bonus points if you were instantly trying to work out if we were in the territory of the bubonic plague or the Great Fire Of London when that date popped up on screen.
Turns out, neither. In a tip of the hat to how much more money the show has its disposal, it was all a set up for a gag about gravity. Respect. Russell T Davies has just told the year’s most expensive dad joke.
But, post credits, this was at its best top tier Russell T Davies Doctor Who.
It was bold early.
Wild Blue Yonder robbed the Doctor very early in the story of two of his most potent pieces of equipment: his trusty sonic screwdriver, and his TARDIS. Both gone, minutes after the majestic blue box had been belching out massive flames. I was expecting, at that stage, more fast and furious stuff. Turns out I got quite the opposite.
he first effect of taking the TARDIS away was to give some time to settle and actually spend some time with the Doctor and Donna. The pair were running around so much in the fast-paced The Star Beast last week, that stopping for a proper chat was out of the question.
Here, that was happily remedied.
In fact, the episode itself was slower, calmer and really crept up the longer it went. Like a slow moving robot going along a corridor. Doctor Who the show may have new clothes and new resources, but I like Davies established that for all that, it’s still a show where the brakes matter. When you go slower, the impact can double.
The basics: we got an apparently abandoned spaceship that itself presents mysteries, and a posh remote camera to help explore it. But for the Doctor, something unfamiliar: a lack of stars, the edge of creation, a hundred trlllion years from Earth. Where even the Time Lord hadn’t been before, and seemingly didn’t know what to expect.
A bit of licking (yep) and joshing later, and out came a dash of Everything Everywhere All At Once. Extended arms that I thought were going to be played for comedy (and there were chuckles in the episode). But Davies wrongfooted me again, continually shifting the foundations of tone: turns out that if you’re looking to come up with a really creepy foe for David Tennant to face off against, you can do a lot worse than recruit David Tennant and Catherine Tate. It took a while, but I started to get Midnight vibes from it all, and that’s a very high Who bar.
It did take me a little time to settle though, and I’m about to pen a couple of churlish paragraphs for which the internet should hate me. Deep breath, here goes.
It does seem odd to note some of the effects work on Doctor Who, given what many of us grew up with. But the future craft on which the Doctor and Donna landed looked like it was made with a computer, and it didn’t look like they were there. It’s an odd side effect of the budget of the show, and being able to consistently afford nice things: the nice things are in turn held to a higher standard.
I feel weird typing that paragraph about Doctor Who. But for a moment, and this doesn’t usually happen, it took me out of things. I was back in for the most bizarre chase sequence I’ve seen all year, mind. And I happily watched the show without murmur of complaint throughout the 1980s. I’m clearly a spoilt whingebag.
Nice tip of the hat to Thunderbirds at one point. Let me get out of this hole by recognising that.
I bring all that up because in the first half of Wild Blue Yonder I was noticing stuff like that. In the second, I was absolutely gripped. When the Doctor and Donna properly went head-to-head with the Doctor and Donna? Well, with huge applause to the two actors at the heart of it, I became more and more unnerved. In a good way.
It’s like the shoot-out in something like the classic movie For A Few Dollars More, with two people working the other out, taking turns to take shots. Metaphorical ones here, as each explains whether the other was real or not.
Loved that.
As the episode went on, just where the floor of reality sat became less and less clear. Related: the more ambiguous Wild Blue Yonder became, it all became richer. Even when David Tennant’s head basically poked out of his own arse (it didn’t, but it looked like that), I was engrossed by what was going on..
Coming up with a Doctor Who monster to really get under our skin is a challenge in itself, especially now. Having Tennant and Tate just staring, with a half grin? Well, they’ve outgunned The Meep to my eyes.
Let’s take a moment too to consider the whole Gallifrey got “complicated” aside.
It’s a brief line from the Doctor that he utters, and he ain’t bloody kidding. Like it or not, the Chris Chibnall era of Doctor Who made a lot of Gallifrey (far more than Davies was ever inclined to do in his first run at Who), and anyone picking up those threads was always going to facing, well, let’s go with ‘a challenge’.
However, thrown into the mix here – although whether to believe it is a question in itself – is that the Doctor perhaps isn’t as sure of his roots as we’ve been led to believe. Might he not be from Gallifrey? Is it really possible that Davies has found something else in the character’s origin, six decades on? This is also picking up the mantle of The Timeless Child, introduced during the 13th Doctor’s era.
Will Davies choose to run with it? As the Time Lord himself once said, “time will tell. It always does”.
As much as Russell T Davies is a whizz at delivering a one-hour blockbuster episode of the show, he’s also proven he’s capable of offbeat, weird and unpredictable stories. I’m going to namecheck Midnight again, because – unexpectedly – it feels to me like an ideal companion piece for Wild Blue Yonder. Midnight-ish, on a bigger canvas, with the slowest ticking bomb Who has probably ever seen.
I thought it was terrific.
Credit too to director Tom Kingsley, and enormous applause for just how strong the work of Catherine Tate and David Tennant was here.
But the final word goes to one man: Bernard Cribbins. The last scenes that he shot for Doctor Who, just before we lost him in 2022, ended the episode. I thought that was a lovely, lovely touch. Sure, there was a massive plane above his head, but the ultimate focus was, rightly, on a much-missed actor. How fitting that the episode was dedicated to him. I can’t have been the only one with dust in my eye.
Next week, this trio of specials comes to an end with The Giggle. The trailer promises much. I’d suggest Wild Blue Yonder has set an early high bar for this latest era of Doctor Who.
Now, if you don’t mind, I’m off to watch it again. And to tip my hat to Bernard one more time…'

background.
a middle child belonging to christopher and imogen carmichael - two stanford professors. christopher specialized in british literature whilst imogen specialized in the classics. hence the name.
the order of siblings goes as such: lysander, elektra, juno, philomena, and twins orion & valora. the deal was that everybody had a greek (or in juno’s case, roman) first name and a middle name inspired by a piece of british literature circa 1800s and under. their parents are eccentric. they’re both in love with their respective topic, and with each other, and with their kids. the carmichael family is a happy family.
they each have their own quirks - though philly’s always been particularly dreamy - even as a child, she’d spend hours watching clouds or caterpillars or the leaves blow in the wind rather than play with other kids. she wasn’t a shy kid - she just had her own interests.
CANCER; hardship doesn’t hit the family until philomena is five and starts having splitting headaches. they’re slow at first - but as soon as she’s seeing spots and unable to walk in a straight line, doctor appointments are made. it doesn’t take long for them to discover the tumor, though the official diagnosis of malignant ependymoma comes a month later. it’s grade ii but slow-moving, small enough to not be as much of a threat as worried, but big enough where removal is necessary. philomena earns a scar and brings it in for show-and-tell. for two months afterwards, philly’s at radiotherapy monday through friday. they’re lucky - philomena’s considered cancer-free by the next year. she’s babied at first - handled delicately, as if she could break if touched - but with five other children … it doesn’t last for too long.
her personality doesn’t shift much over the next few years - she’s awfully independent for a kid, and awfully quiet - when she speaks it’s about faeries and bigfoot, about how the sky is so blue and if you listen quietly, you can hear the leaves whisper their secrets to each other. this is not odd.
she’s close to all her siblings, but she idolizes her older sister - elektra. elektra’s six years older and dyes her hair whatever colors she wants. elektra bought a knife off a seedy guy downtown. elektra threw away all of her heels and renounced god. elektra is god. her music is loud but it’s not heavy - it’s florence and the machine and fleetwood mac.
they’re opposites - elektra’s boisterous and feels loudly, philomena’s softer and feels…less. when elektra sneaks out, philomena keeps watch. they are a duo.
philomena is smart - but she’s fifteen and hates school. hates sitting inside all day. hates the same routine - day after day - it’s all the same. her parents’ routine is the same, philly feels contained and she wants to live. elektra’s twenty-one and just bought a brand new spanking (used but not falling apart) 19-something volkswagen … van - using her entire savings account. she says she’s tired of routine, she’s leaving the next day.
naturally, philomena stows away in the back and isn’t discovered until they’re two states away and she’s got to pee. elektra nearly crashes the van in shock.
it’s an argument - philomena vs. elektra, then them vs. their parents, then their parents vs. the school, the state - it’s an ordeal. philomena switches to an online program in the end. it hurts christopher and imogen - lysander’s not having any of their nonsense, juno’s betrayed and alone - the twins are twins. in the end, it’s alright. the carmichael family is a happy family.
philomena and elektra take their time - it’s not a road trip, it’s their new life, permanently on the road. they stop and explore often - they do odd jobs in whatever town they settle in. they dine-n-dash, they shoplift. they survive in their own way.
she drops out of high school officially when she’s seventeen - they have to drive all the way back to california to deal with the wrath of their parents and to deal with paperwork, but it’s done. philomena doesn’t know what path she wants in life - but it’s not that.
DEPERSONALIZATION / DEREALIZATION / MINOR BODY HORROR; it’s during this time that the episodes occur - philomena’s outside her body, philomena’s wrapped in cotton, her memories are not her own. she’s looking in the mirror and she doesn’t recognize herself. they stay home for six months until their therapist figures out the problem: depersonalization and derealization disorder. they think it’s stress; but philomena doesn’t get stressed. they think it’s trauma, and she laughs - she never laughs. their memories are heavy, spotty; something unwilling to emerge. philomena doesn’t want to know, doesn’t want to remember; the scent of decay, the feeling of rot.
philomena and elektra leave home again after that and do not return. there’s too much concern, too much care; philomena feels suffocated in doctor’s visits and their parents’ worry. they know it’s well - intentioned, but philomena was never meant to stick to one place for very long, and neither was elektra.
elektra and philomena have visited every state, gone into canada, down into mexico. they’ve traveled the perimeter of the country three times; and have passed through blue harbor at least twice as many times.
after warrants for their arrest in florida, and a brief stunt in a texan prison; philomena and elektra travel up to blue harbor once again. it’s familiar, and has just a large enough population that they can go unnoticed. they have ties there, from their years of pit stops. it’s supposed to be temporary, as their visits always are; but their trusted van breaks down, and they’re left to live in the weaver inn until further notice.

Current mood: dying in anticipation of A Story of Titans
ASKJDHASKDHASKHD UR SO KIND THANK U!!! This gave me motivation to stop fucking around and actually write, so here is a snippet for you!!
--
David dove so Daniel did too. They swam between some large rocks and into a little cavern in the side of the island. This tunneled for a short distance, then ended abruptly. They surface in a hollow under the island. Daniel guessed it was remnants of an old volcano, based on the fact that there was a hole straight above leading to the surface. Light filtered in from it, but not much.
Overall, the cavern was dark. Too dark for humans to see much, but he and David could see fine. There was a big ledge where Daniel could exit the water. The walls were shiny and slick. It was underwhelming. “This is it? A dark hole in the ground?”
David pouted, pulling himself out of the water to his waist. “We just have to wait for the sun to get in the right place! Then it lights up!” He smiled, “you’re going to love it!”
“I told you, I don’t love anything.”
“You have to love something.”
“Mmm,” Daniel thought on it for just a moment. “Being worshipped.”
David’s smile fell, expression turning to one of irritation.
“You asked,” Daniel teased.
“Anyway.” He smiled again, “when the sun comes through it makes all the walls shine! They’re made of really colorful rocks. I chip chunks off and bring them to my people and that’s what we trade with! Other people really really like them!”
“Wait-” Daniel grabbed a rough area of wall, “are you telling me…” he squeezed until a chunk came off. He held it under the weak beam of light trickling in. It was a deep red. Daniel couldn’t believe it. “Your island is full of rubies and you just- what? Give them away for whatever??”
David pursed his lips and tilted his head. “Well, we like them but we need things and the people from far away give us those things in exchange for these pretty rocks. We can’t eat or wear or build with them, so…”
“David,” Daniel leaned down to his level, trying to reason with him. “These are valuable. Humans love them. Nations go to war for shiny rocks, okay? This island has an incredibly valuable commodity and I’m a little worried you’re underselling it.”
“I don’t understand?”
“How much stuff do you get for a rock this big?”
“Oh, I don’t know. A few things. The French give us some sugar and clothes for them, usually.”
“That’s it?”
“Yeah.”
Daniel looked down at the gem in his hand. These idiots were being taken advantage of, he was sure of it. They had no idea how much this shiny rock was worth. It gave him an idea. A way to put himself in a seat of control. To make them rely on him far more than they did David. Oh, it was brilliant. “Let’s get back to the village. I think your people are being cheated.”

This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go.
Rose and David picked Emma up hours ago and were now holed up in Naveen’s Cambridge home. Alan would join them tomorrow, and the four doting grandparents would probably spoil their precious baby granddaughter beyond repair this weekend.
The first weekend away from a new baby is never easy, but once their nerves settled, Ethan and Kaycee began counting the days. Emma filled their world with joy, but the opportunity to just be them again for forty-eight glorious hours was an opportunity they could not resist. Especially now.
Kaycee got the green light from Dr. Collado last week. Despite her exhaustion, she bolted home, intent on jumping her husband the moment she walked through the door. It had been months… an absolute eternity! But complications late in her pregnancy and post-partum healing required abstaining, and she was anxious to put those days in the past.
But as she swung the door open, a bleary-eyed Ethan was pacing warily across the room. Kaycee saw the desperation in his eyes as he jiggled their screeching baby in his arms. Extending her own, she tried to calm Emma to no avail. Ethan tried again, and the pattern continued until the adorable little demon finally passed out. The only problem was her equally exhausted parents did too.
They thought they had this in the bag, but it was becoming clear… sex and romance with a newborn in the house would not be easy.
“So,” Kaycee asked over breakfast the next day, “we’ll both be home by eight. If we can get Emma to sleep by nine, I think we can do it immediately after.”
Ethan placed his coffee mug on the counter with a chuckle.   “We’re penciling each other in for sex now?”
“No! I’m putting you in with permanent marker! Ethan, it’s been months! I’m dying… the only reason I’m not screwing you on this table right now is because we can’t be late for work today.” She looked at her husband with concern. “Wait, you’re eager too. Aren’t you?”
“Yes!” he assured, “I absolutely am. It’s just….”
“It’s just?” Panic began to rise in her chest as terrible thoughts raced in her mind.
“I just don’t want us putting that pressure on ourselves. Because then if we can’t, it becomes a problem.”
She hated when he was so logical. Especially when she was so horny, but she knew he was right. That night ended up being a repeat of the one before. And the next day, Kaycee begged him for a quickie in his office. “Like the old days…” she pleaded. But Mr. Maturity stopped them again.
“We’ve waited this long. Our parents will have Emma this weekend… after all this time, let’s make it special.”
She relented, and they planned. They would make the entire week one long foreplay session! Teasing each other day and night. The second her parents walked out that door, they’d be naked, and the two-day “fuck-fest USA” would be underway! They stocked up on champagne, wine, and strawberries and planned on ordering in food all weekend long – there was only one thing on the agenda – they couldn’t wait.
Friday night was finally upon them when….
“What do you mean you have to stay late tonight! My parents are getting Emma at six!”
“I know! And you know I want to be there, but this is urgent, Kaycee.”
“Fine,” she sighed, “what time do you think you’ll be home?”
“Eight, the latest.”
“Well,” she groaned, “I guess I can wait two hours. Promise you won’t be a moment later.”
“Wild horses couldn’t keep me away.”
At eight o’clock, she reclined on their sofa, her body scantly clad in strips of lace and silk so small, some would say why bother. But the thought of Ethan tearing them off her before they leaped into a refreshing pool after months lost in the desert left her tingling. She poured a glass of wine and waited.
At eight-thirty, with her second glass of wine finished, she tapped anxiously on the glass on her phone. Wanting to reach out to him but knowing she should be patient. She decided to wait.
Nine o’clock. No husband. No call. She considered checking to see if any wild horses were, in fact, loose on the streets of Boston. Her lingerie-clad body was now wrapped in a fleece blanket; these things weren’t made to be worn alone long-term. It felt as if the candlelight, roses, and now empty bottle of wine were mocking her as the night dragged on.   Finally, her phone chimed. But she only needed to see the first line for her head to fling back in frustration.

But the night wasn’t through toying with Kaycee’s emotions. The bar was strangely quiet, so she texted a few friends who promised to be there soon, but they also got stuck at work with emergencies. She needed to associate with people outside the medical field. But she was determined to make the best of it, but the only people she knew were Bob from Accounting and a resident she didn’t recognize who gushed over her entirely too much. Feeling sorry for herself, Kaycee lost count of the number of drinks she ordered.
Ethan strolled into the nearly empty bar several hours later and found his wife slumped against the wall in the booth she usually shared with her friends. His eyes shifted from her to Reggie, who shook his head with a smile while drying glasses.
“You couldn’t have cut her off?” Ethan asked, approaching him.
“Hey, the bar wasn’t this empty all night, my friend. I do what I can.”
Without being asked, Reggie placed two large glasses of water before his friend.
“So,” Ethan sighed. “How bad was she.”
“Not too bad. Some amusing dance moves with Bob from Accounting.”
“Oh, God…” Ethan grimaced.
“She may have told me her husband was a jerk for leaving her alone tonight,” Reggie shrugged. “I agreed with her. After all, sometimes that guy can be an asshole.”
Ethan took the glasses and laughed, “Sometime, I’d agree.”
A flurry of emotions coursed through him as he slid in beside his wife. Amusement, endearment, a little bit of guilt. This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go. As he nudged her awake and pushed the glasses of water in front of her, he promised himself he’d make it up to her during the next two days. But as she began to stir, he understood the gravity of the situation he stumbled upon.
“Wake up, beautiful,” he whispered. “I know you think I’m a toad right now, but I promise one kiss, and I’ll be Prince Charming again.”
Kaycee grimaced as she began to stir, covering her eyes after glimpsing at him.
“Your pickup lines suck!” She groaned. “Do they actually work on anyone?”
“I don’t know,” he chuckled. “I haven’t used them in a while.”
“Good!” she stammered. “But you’ll have to try them on someone else tonight. I have a boyfriend!”
“Oh, you do?” Ethan grinned.
“I do. So go away!”
“You sure you don’t want to replace him? What kind of a boyfriend leaves you alone here on a Friday night?”
“My boyfriend is very important!” she slurred. “He is busy with important things… because he is important. You wouldn’t understand that!”
“No, I guess not,” Ethan replied. He held a straw to her lips and watched as she did her best to sip down some water. “Though I must admit, it’s very upsetting to me to learn that you have a boyfriend.”
“Why?” She spat. “I wouldn’t go out with you anyway.”
“Really? That’s a shame… because you married me.”
Kaycee’s eyes shot open wide as the world came into focus – sort of.
“I married you?”
“Yep. Even had my child,” he laughed, rubbing his nails with pride.
“Was I drunk?” She asked.
“The whole time?” He laughed. “No, you weren't, but you are now. Drink some water. We’re going to get you sobered up.”
An hour later, Reggie approached their booth. “Hey, kids, I don’t want to break up this party, but I’m about to close up.”
“Mmmmhhhh,” Kaycee moaned as she snuggled on Ethan’s shoulder. “I’m not ready to go yet.”
Ethan looked at his friend with an air of desperation.
“You know what,” Reggie said, tossing a key across the table. “If I can’t trust you, who the hell can I trust. Just make sure the place is locked before you leave.”
“You sure?” Ethan asked as Reggie walked away, waving his hand.
“I’ve got no worries with you, and neither should you, young lady.”
“It’s OK,” Kaycee giggled. “I sober enough to remember he’s my husband again.”
“And so far, she seems to believe that’s a good thing,” Ethan jested.
She wrapped her arms around him, taking comfort in his familiar scent as he held her close.
“I’m sorry,” she grimaced, “I had no intention of getting drunk. I didn’t realize pregnancy killed my alcohol tolerance.”
“It’s ok,” he laughed. “Reggie tells me you were stuck with Bob from Accounting, and he’d make anyone want to black out.”
Kaycee laughed as she sat up, her head no longer spinning. “You’re not mad at me?”
“Of course not. But, let’s get you home and ensure you’re well enough for… other things… tomorrow.”
Kaycee met him with a mischievous gaze that had him raising an eyebrow.
“Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today. You know that picture I sent you?”
“As if I could forget.”
“I’m still wearing it.”
“You are?”
“I am,” she smiled, rising to her feet and tugging at her clothes. “Underneath all of this.”
Ethan watched in reverent awe as his wife slowly inched her sweater above her head. Forcing him to wait much longer than necessary.
“What are you doing?”
“We have the bar to ourselves.” Turning around, she peered coquettishly over her shoulder as she dropped her jeans to the floor. “Tell me you haven’t had a fantasy or two about doing this?”
“Kaycee… what if there are security cameras we don’t know about?”
She hoisted herself onto the bar with much more grace than she expected and steadied herself with a playful laugh. With a dramatic show, she spread her legs wide, a barstool supporting each foot as she leaned seductively in toward her bended knees.
“Then I’m about to make one hell of a video, Dr. Ramsey. Now, is it going to be a solo show, or do you care to join me?”
A nervous but tantalizing smile spread on his lips as he rushed to stand before her. Cupping her cheeks in his hands, he stared lustfully into her crystal blue eyes. With one look, she made it painfully clear that she would submit to his every wish. Dizzy with desire, he slid his hand along the outside of her smooth, creamy thighs.
“You’re out of your mind, Kaycee. You know that, right?”
“Perhaps,” she grinned, her hands dipping below his waist and gently stroked his harness as he began to groan. “But it looks like you’re enjoying it.”
“You’re sure you don’t want to go home,” he asked, his hands exploring the bare skin on her torso.
“Ethan, it’s been over four months! I don’t want to wait another second.”
“Thank God,” gasped, his mouth tugging at her ear, “because neither do I.”
Kaycee’s back arched as he held her close, the sensation of his warm mouth trailing down the length of her neck causing her breath to hitch. He stopped at her collarbone, gently kissing and sucking at her delicate skin, before slipping his fingers under the lace cup of her bra. Her body quivered, and a shallow groan escaped as he toyed with her the way only he had ever known how.
“You think you’re the only one who is a little depraved,” he growled as his mouth dropped down to service her breast.
“I never said that,” she gasped, caressing his hair as his tongue swirled around her.
Her hips gyrated on the hardwood surface, her body longing for more of his touch. He bit her nipple lightly, and her eyes clenched shut. “Quite impatient, aren’t we,” he chuckled with a graveled voice.
“Ethan,” she shrieked, voice full of want. “I haven’t had you in four months! I need you.”
“You need me?” he teased, standing, he brought his lips back to hers. His fingers slid under her panties and were saturated with just one touch. Pulling the wetness from her core, he slowly swirled his fingers through her folds, taking great pleasure in watching her lose control before him. She was all his.
“How badly would you say you want me?” he asked, pressing a finger gently inside her.
A broken whimper came from her throat, but words… he didn’t expect her to formulate words, did he? Not with his warm mouth again encircling her nipple and his fingers, now two deep inside, teasing out her pleasure below.
“You didn’t answer me,” he said, teeth tugging at her sensitive peak. “How bad do you want me?”
“So… so bad,” her voice quaked as she shamelessly grinded against his hand, desperate for more. Her eyes shut tight in eager anticipation as unintelligible worlds fell from her lips.
“Would this help?”
A loud shriek filled the air as a third finder thrust deep inside, and he began rocking his hips against her, pushing firmly against her most sensitive spot.
Despite his own mounting pleasure, he smiled in delight as he watched her crumble, her body trembling as she clung desperately to him.
“Come on, beautiful,” he whispered lustfully in her ear. “Let go,” he gasped as his thumb made its way to her swollen clit, pressing hard as he furiously encircled her.
“Ethan… I… I….” she breathed.
“That’s right,” he smiled. “Come for me, precious. I want you to come for me.”
She felt a burst as she clenched around his fingers. So tight he had to fight to keep them working her through. Her head flipped back with a curse as her gasps filled the empty space around them. Ethan again lowered his mouth to her breast, scraping his teeth against her. Her hips lurched off the bar. She pulled him so close she no longer knew where she ended and he began. Her body convulsed with pleasure once more before she went limp. Falling breathlessly onto her elbows behind her.
When her eyes finally opened, she found him staring down at her with wanton lust in his eyes, his hand still lazily tracing circles inside her. His heart raced, and he was certain that he would explode if he didn’t have her soon. Her disheveled hair, flushed skin, and the way her teeth sunk into her lower lip as she gazed up at him with unadulterated bliss. He did that. He did that to the woman he loved most in the world, and now he had to have more.
Without a word, his hands hurried to his waist. She watched as he unbuckled his pants and dropped them to the floor.
“Thank God,” Kaycee sighed as she helped remove his shirt. “I was wondering when you were going to get naked with me.”
“You’re not naked,” he groaned.
Kaycee looked down at the whisps of fabric covering her, all pushed to the side so he could access whatever his heart desired.
“Well, I’m hardly clothed,” she giggled.
“It’s still too much.”
She felt his hand grasp the fabric between her legs, then, with a quick snap and burning sensation, her panties joined his pants on the wooden floor.
“Wow! You really go after what you want?” she smiled.
Laying her flat on the bar, his palms pushed her legs apart, then he took her in his arms as he climbed on top of her. A look of longing she had never before seen burned in his eyes. His breath was now coming in pants, and he pulled her in for another kiss.
“You know the only thing I want is you.”
“Then have me,” she purred, lowering her hands to spread her lips for him.
With a guttural groan, Ethan softly pushed inside her, slowly at first, to ensure she was all right, but also so he could relish every second as her silky walls enveloped him, squeezing against him, welcoming him back home. A curse escaped him when she took him in completely.
“Kaycee,” he gasped. “Are you OK?”
“I’d be better if you were fucking me,” she said with a sexy grin.
Then she watched as his eyes turned dark. Something feral awakened inside. Permission had been granted; now, he was taking what he needed, all he desired… she was his. Each thrust was deep, desperate, longing to fill a need that had gone too long unfulfilled. The mix of pleasure and pain as her nails scraped the length of his back and the beautiful noises escaping her brought him closer and closer to the edge.
She gazed up at him adoringly as she felt her own pleasure beginning to crest once more, beads of his sweat splashing onto her bare skin. She lifted her legs, and he helped her shift her heels above his shoulders; they both gasped as he filled her again, deeper, harder, faster than before. She cried out as ecstasy overtook her.
“Ethan….” her voice quivered, ‘Ethan… I….”
“Say my name, baby… say my name for me.”
“I… I… can… I….”
“Say it!” he hissed through clenched teeth as she arched her back up, pressing against him as she met him, move for move.
Her eyes fluttered shut as the world flashed bright white around her, ripples of unabashed pleasure racing through every inch of her body.
“ETHAN!” she cried as she squeezed tightly around him.
“That’s my girl,” he gasped as he began to jerk on top of her.
“KAYCEE!” He screamed as he came to his own release, spilling deep inside her.
They didn’t know how long they lay atop the wooden bar. Both spent Ethan’s head rested upon her breast. Feeling drunker than she had before, Kaycee mindlessly twirled his sweat-soaked. Leaning over, she kissed his forehead with a smirk on her lips.
“Welcome home,” she whispered as he chuckled against her.
“It’s good to be home,” he smiled.
“Well, not exactly home, more like at our favorite bar.”
“You know what I mean,” he teased as he rose to his elbows and looked her in the face. “That was….”
“Well worth the wait.”
“You can say that again,” he concurred.
“So, have you ever thought about doing it on this bar?”
“There aren’t many places I haven’t envisioned doing this to you,” he grinned, “But I thought we would at least have done it in front of my spot.”
“Aw,” Casey whined, twisting her neck to look at Ethan’s chair. “Well, we can do it there later if you want. After we recover a bit.”
“As delightful as that sounds, why don’t we clean up here and go home? There are several softer surfaces I’d like to explore with you.”
Kaycee raised her mouth to his and they shared one more sensual kiss.
“You’ve got a deal!”
One week later:
“Hey, buddy!” Reggie sang as he slid a napkin in front of Ethan at the bar. “Where’s the Mrs. today?”
“She’s still at work. She’ll be down later.”
“Good, always good to see your better half. Now, what’ll it be, the usual?”
“You know me by now,” Ethan stated.
“I thought I did,” Reggie replied, pouring Ethan’s favorite scotch into a tumbler. “But over ten years you’ve been coming here now… Care to share why a creature of habit like you has suddenly changed your seat?”
Ethan snorted as he lowered his glass back to the bar and wiped his lips. He looked at his old friend with a half smile and firmly answered. “No.”

The water flow stopped, and Andrew sighed, picking up the towel. He looked at himself in the mirror, his eyes scanning across the plain chest and stopping before his view reached his elbows.
"Andrew?" a voice called from the other side of the door, startling him. Andrew took a quick breath, closing his eyes before sighing, reminding himself of where he was. Renee's bathroom. Allison was downstairs, probably preparing baby Seth to stand in the crowd with her. "Nicky just left me your clothes. Do you want me to leave them in the spare room for you?"
"Yess." Andrew replied, looking down and pulling his boxers on. "I'll be out in a second." He reached for the armbands, pulling them on and tucking his thumb into the holes before walking out.
Betsy, Nicky and Erik were changing at home. They didn't need the preparation like the twins did, they wouldn't get picked. Jesse was safe too, wrapped up between his dads but next year he wouldn't. Next year he would be up there, and Andrew couldn't save him. Andrew had already felt the guilt of the six years he missed protecting his cousin and the four years he missed with his brother.
When they were united two years ago, it was a shock to everyone around them. Andrew had been in Betsy's care his entire life before then, with help from Renee for a few years during his more rebellious phase. When Renee started her fighting lessons twelve years ago, he was one of the firsts to sign up. Eight years after Andrew signed up, another Andrew signed up. Renee knew it wasn't him. And she mentioned it to Betsy, who connected the fourteen-year olds and since took them both in, alongside their cousin. A year later, Nicky introduced his boyfriend and his son to the family, and they were welcomed with open arms.
Betsy took two-week-old Andrew in from the day she saw him left on the side of the work field, wrapped in only a blanket. She took him home, where eight-year-old Renee was waiting. She hadn't been ditched like Andrew, she has been unfortunately orphaned by a factory malfunction and lost her mother at only six.
Renee and Andrew grew up alongside each other, but when she left for the games at age thirteen, they knew they would never be the same. Renee came back a victor, that's when she started her fighting lessons. Betsy advised against it but saw her development and let her work. When Andrew questioned her why she let her fight after she had won, Betsy reminded him Renee had won for a reason.
That's when he met Wymack. David Wymack, the winner of the forty-third Hunger Games. David Wymack, the man who relied on the pain of tattoos to give him a mental escape from the pain that the Games had caused him. The same David Wymack who took Jean Moreau out of Betsy's care less than a week after she took him in.
"Just because Jean was taken in by the Wymacks, it doesn't mean that you're not wanted." Betsy would always say. She would say the same thing every time she took one kid into her home and then they were taken in by a family a few days after. "You are just as valid. You are just as special. You just need to wait for your special time to shine."
Eight years passed and Aaron appeared. They united, Nicky was introduced, and Betsy took them all in. Betsy introduced them to Wymack, who introduced them to his kids and the Boyds. Befriending the entire of the Victors Village was a kick in the guts to Andrew. A reminder how he wasn't special, how he was basically nothing in comparison to some people.
Jean remembered him though. Jean made him feel special way. Not a romantic or sexual thing. Andrew knew those. Well, he knew sexual. He knew from all the hook-ups behind the factories, he knew from the nights he stayed at Roland's, a classmate in Renee's fighting class, and experimented with things. He knew from the start he was gay, but never said it out loud. He wasn't too confident when it came to romantic feelings however, but he had an idea.
Jean Moreau-Wymack was his first and only friend. Renee accepted this, seeing how they're bond was more sibling like than friends. Jean joined him on the tree searched. Andrew taught him to climb quick, how to spot the nests quickly, how to remove both wasp and birds safely. In return, Jean baked him sweet goods. The banana breads and cakes and muffins rolled through the door daily, Jean delivering them every morning with a small smile. Occasionally, Jean would bake with exotic flavors that David Wymack brought back from his annual visits to the Capitol.
With all the time Andrew had started spending Jean, Aaron began spending it with the other child in the Wymack household. Kevin Wymack-Day. David's biological child from a woman he didn't meet again after their one-night stand.
When Kayleigh, Kevin's mother, passed Kevin had been put in the custody of David. Jean, Kayleigh's other child, had been given to Betsy to be cared for. David hunted him down and took him in, not having the heart to separate the kids.
Aaron and Kevin clicked the second they met. Both being insufferable, obsessive assholes in Andrew's opinion (and Jean's, but that was one of the secrets between the two that were shared in the tops of trees over a muffin each). Aaron's obsession laying in the profession of David's wife, Abby Wymack. One of the best doctors in District 7. Since Aaron became closer with her, he became more obsessed over the profession and soon, if he survived the final reaping, would become her apprentice. Kevin's obsession laid in a Capitol sport, Exy. Whenever his father visited the Capitol for the games, he would bring back his son merchandise of his favorite teams. David had a friend in the Capitol who recorded every game so he could take them home and Kevin could watch them.
Andrew reached the spare room and froze before remembering where he was. Renee's house. Aaron was at the Wymacks', using their shower like Andrew was using Renee's. He knew the only reason was to see Kevin, and 'secretly' say goodbye and good luck in their own special way.
Their attraction to each other was not unknown, practically everyone knew. But it was obvious they were waiting until Aaron's last reaping, until today, to make anything exclusive. As long as they snuck out of the Victors Village before anyone began to head to the town center, no one would notice the luxurious treatment the twins were getting.
The clothes were spread out, waiting on the spare room bed. Nicky's old black, short sleeved button up shirt and a pair of Erik's old, tight fit, wash jeans. A pair of old boots that Betsy had managed to afford where on the floor, with a pair of Allison's bright pink socks laying neatly in the neck of the boot.
"You'll need to be ready in a few minutes Andrew." Renee's voice filtered through the door again. "The ceremony starts in an hour. People begin to move soon." Her footsteps echoed down the corridor as she left and Andrew looked at the clothes, sighing.
◒◓◒◓◒
Andrew stepped out, seeing Kevin and Aaron talking through a gap in the curtains. He sat back, waiting silently and watched them argue.
"They're horrible." Jean mumbled, sitting next to Andrew on the wall, leaving a large enough space for Capitol's largest man to sit between them. "Kevin kicked me out so I couldn't hear. I think they're talking about their latest hook-up." He took a bite from a muffin, leaving one on the wall beside Andrew. "It was at ours while we were climbing. I think they think we're fucking."
"How disappointed will they be when they find out we don't fuck; we talk shit about them and stuff our faces with shit." Andrew mumbled and Jean giggled, taking another bite. "Truth for a truth?" Jean nodded. "I'm nervous."
"That's well justified." Jean said. "Your name is at the highest chance it's ever been, and ever will be. But some people do sadly have their names in there more than you. So, the chance it being you is low. And the chance it's Aaron is even lower, since your name is still in there from the past years of tesserae. "Jean sighed. "I'm gay. I think." Jean mumbled before looking over.
"Want another round?" Andrew asked and Jean stopped before nodding. He took another bite of his muffin, looking forward again. "I'm gay too." Andrew said, picking his muffin up. "I've known for a few years."
"I have a crush on Jeremy." Jean said. Andrew turned to him, raising an eyebrow. "The baker's son. I used to talk to him a lot when I lived with Kayleigh. She would let me pick up her weekly orders from the bakery and I would pay them with grain and milk. I used to talk to Jeremy every Sunday, and that's why I like baking. Because I like Jeremy. "
Andrew looked back through the window, seeing them still talking. Aaron seemed more angry than usual during their 'conversations'. "You should offer to work there." Andrew suggested. "You could see him more."
Jean laughed, looking down before taking the final bite. "I could, but who would you hang out with then? You haven't got any other friends." "I have Jesse." Andrew said, taking a bite. "This is good. What flavor is it?"
"It's another new one from the Capitol called Palmetto. It's basically a super sweet blood orange." Jean said. "And Jesse doesn't count. He's got school you know."
"I'll teach him then." Andrew argued, his eyes following Jean as the older boy got up and started pacing. "I remember all my lessons. I could teach him with no struggle." Jean snorted, looking up. "Shouldn't you be getting ready?"
"Kicked out remember?" Jean mumbled, looking back at Andrew. Andrew shrugged, taking another bite from his muffin and Jean laughed. "I should. Aaron seems to be done in the shower, so if I go straight up Kev probably won't care." Andrew nodded, taking another bite quickly. "I need to, don't I?" Andrew nodded again. "I'll see you after. Good luck Andrew." Jean turned to walk back.
"Jean." Andrew said and he stopped, turning. "If I get picked, don't be nervous to say goodbye."
Jean knew that was Andrew asking him to come. But Andrew didn't like asking. Andrew didn't want to ask, say the word please. It wasn't how Andrew worked, and Jean knew that. He never questioned why, but he knew that. He never pressed any questions when it came to Andrew, because Andrew never did the same to him. He never questioned the scars on his cheek or the roughness of his hands or the burn marks that Jean turned up with.
"I will." Jean said, smiling gently. "I hope you enjoyed the muffin! If I do need to visit you, I'll bring one along. A parting gift." He laughed before walking inside.
Andrew watched the door for a few seconds after it closed before moving his glance to the gap in the curtains. Their argument went on for a few more minutes until Aaron looked out the window. Andrew raised an eyebrow and Aaron sighed, turning back to Kevin and saying something before leaving.
"Trouble in paradise?" Andrew muttered when Aaron reached his side.
"Shut up." Aaron muttered, already towards the village entrance.
He was dressed in a tight red shirt, it looked like Kevin's with the way it was too tight around his waist but loose around the arms, and a pair of trousers which were too torn to belong to a victor, and the style choice only pointed to Nicky. Too tight around the thighs with baggy bottoms. Just how Erik liked it.
"He just wanted to wish me good luck and I wanted to thank him, or tell him to thank his dad, for letting me use their shower."
"Wish you good luck with a massive smooch." Andrew said, walking after him.
"As if you and Jean weren't doing the same." Aaron muttered, scowling at him.
"Jean was actually just telling me about his crush. I got a name and everything. It was glorious." Andrew said. As Aaron went to ask, Andrew continued, "But I will not be saying anything about the mystery person. It was in our game, and I never tell secrets from our game."
"You're stupid shitty 'Truth for a truth' game?" Aaron asked and Andrew nodded. "I don't know why you two play that. It's not even a game, its talking. Like normal people do. You and Jean are weird."
"I think Jean is smarter than you when it comes to most things." Andrew mumbled, pushing the gate at the end of the pathway open. Nicky looked up through the window, smiling when he saw the twins. "If him being weird is the consequence of that, I don't think he minds.
"Fucking weirdo." Aaron muttered, pushing past. Nicky immediately fussed over him, asking where the shirt he left out was. Erik moved closer to Andrew, holding Jesse in his arms.
"I have missed you." Erik said.
"Jesse." Andrew called and the young boy looked over. "Want to hug?" Jesse nodded excitedly. Erik squatted down, letting Jesse run over. But just before he reached Andrew, he slowed down and then calmly wrapped his arms around Andrew's waist. "Oh Andrew, you look amazing." Nicky whispered. "I wish Betsy could see you before the ceremony, but she's already gone to get the other kids ready." He stood up, smiling. "You both look amazing. And we are going to get through this, and we are going to come home and be calm and happy."
His smile faltered for a second, but he plastered it back on before Aaron could notice. Erik and Andrew did, but both decided to stay quiet, knowing he was trying his hardest.
"Andrew, are you sure you don't want to move to a factory job with me and Aaron? You could watch the games."
"I'm fine being a clearer." Andrew mumbled. "I get good pay and I only have to talk to Jean. I see no flaws."
"But you can't watch the games." Nicky said.
"Erik doesn't like to watch the games. Neither do I." Andrew said, looking down at Jesse, who had buried his face in Andrew's side. "I am happy getting the updates from you over dinner."
Nicky went to say something, but Erik stepped forward and whispered into his ear. Nicky sighed, looking at him. Erik pecked his lips softly.
"We should get going, though," Andrew said, pushing Jesse back lightly and holding his hand out. Jesse smiled widely, taking his hand and holding tightly, as if his life depended on it.
The walk to the town center was mostly fully of Nicky's nervous rambling, with Erik and Aaron occasionally responding. But Andrew ignored them and chose to focus on the small tune Jesse was humming, squeezing his hand along to the beat.
When they reached the town center, Erik picked Jesse back up. Jesse waved to Andrew sadly before his dad carried him off, holding Nicky's hand. They passed the peacekeepers and stood in the crowd beside Jean and Kevin. Andrew took off down the silent path, leading them to the identification tables.
He could see over the peacekeepers' shoulders, David, Matt and Renee lined up along the back of the stage, with their escort, Kathy Ferdinand, standing in front of them. She was talking animatedly to them, with her big blonde hair and eyes practically painted with pink. The skin-tight pink leather dress clung to her to an uncomfortably revealing extent where Andrew had to look away.
"Next." The peacekeeper said and Andrew looked up, seeing Aaron's whole-body flinch. "Go through. Next."
Andrew stepped forward, holding his hand forward. The peacekeeper grabbed his wrist roughly, tugging it forward and pricking the end of his finger. They then pressed it to the paper, scanned it and let him through.
Andrew rushed through, pushing through all the crowds to find his brother. Aaron was waiting nervously, wringing his wrists. Andrew pushed through the crowd until he ended up besides his brother, waiting silently.
"What if we get picked?" Aaron whispered, looking at his brother. Andrew shrugged, keeping his eyes focused on the stage. "Andrew I'm serious." he said before his voice was drowned out by Kathy tapping the microphone.
"Welcome, welcome." she said, smiling at everyone.
The neon yellow contacts she wore made everyone unsettled, but she continued, her cat-like eyes scanning the crowd.
"Welcome to the fifty seventh Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor." She smirked, looking across to the group of people who weren't being reaped, taunting them. "Now, the time has come for us to select one courageous young man and women for the honor of representing district seven in this year's Hunger Games." She stopped for a second, smiling. "As usual, ladies first."
She shuffled across the stage in her overly tight dress and waved her hand over the bowl. A hand skimmed Andrew's wrist and he looked down, seeing Aaron's beside his, the knuckles brushing the black cloth. Andrew slid his hand into his brothers as Kathy waddled back to the microphone.
"Marissa Goodman." Kathy read out, looking across the crowd. People were stepped aside two sections before the twins.
Sixteen years old, Andrew told himself. The girl stepped forward, dressed in a light green dress which skimmed her knees and her hair tied into a tight ponytail.
"Come on up dear, don't be afraid." Four peacekeepers surrounded her, leading her up to the stage. Marissa slowly walked up, and Kathy enthusiastically welcomed her. "And now the boys."
Aaron's grip tightened on his hand as she reached the glass bowl. Kathy smiled, waving her hand around the top before diving in and pulling out one white slip. She slowly shuffled back to the microphone and leant close, undoing the slip slowly. She smirked before reading, "Aaron Michael Minyard."
"I volunteer as tribute." Andrew looked down before he even had acknowledged the words come out of his mouth. He looked back up, seeing everyone staring at him. Aaron was looking at him with tearful eyes.
"Not Andrew." he whispered, but Andrew pushed past. "No. Andrew stop!" he shouted, following him through. Andrew took his place in between the peacekeepers but was dragged back violently. "I won't let you do this." Aaron shouted.
"I volunteer." Andrew repeated, making direct eye contact with Aaron. Aaron shook his head, his mouth opening and closing until the first tear rolled down his cheek and his grip on Andrew's arm loosened.
Aaron was pulled back quickly, and Andrew recognized the hand around his twin's shoulders immediately. Jean pulled Aaron back, avoiding Andrew's eye. Andrew turned around and followed the peacekeepers down the aisle. Renee was staring at him, shocked, from the back of the stage. Matt's eyes were filled with tears, while Wymack's jaw was clenched.
Andrew didn't remember as far back as to when he was four, but he knew Wymack's story.
Wymack had trained as hard as he could after losing a close friend to the games when he was twelve. When David turned eighteen, he volunteered himself before the name was even called out. His reasoning was to save one more helpless kid from being killed in his district. This caused him to become a fan favorite in the Capitol, and a respected citizen in the district. In every shop, I have had a discount. Everyone smiled at him in the streets. Everyone welcomed him into their homes and invited him round for dinner.
Every year, when the victors returned, all three of the victors visited the houses of the fallen tributes to mourn with them for one night. They supplied the family with the food for the night and left them all the leftovers. It was a tradition started by Wymack, but when Renee won the forty-fourth Hunger Games, she joined in. And when Matt won the fifty-first Hunger Games, he became the final part of the trio.
Andrew was snapped out of his thoughts when he reached the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the stage. He made eye contact with Renee, who smiled gently at him. He sighed before walking up.
"A volunteer!" Kathy cried, holding her hand out to showcase Andrew's arrival. "Now, what's your name young man?"
"Andrew Joseph Minyard." Andrew said, looking forward.
Jean was finally looking at him, his face contorted with fear. Nicky was beside him, crying into Erik's shoulder. Erik was staring at Andrew in fear while Jesse sobbed, bundled in Betsy's arms. Aaron was crying, while being held back by Kevin.
"Oh, and was that your brother I picked?" Kathy asked, smiling widely.
"Yes, my twin brother." Andrew answered, trying to keep his voice monotone.
"How lovely." Kathy said before turning to the crowd again. "Here we are. Our tributes from district seven!" She started clapping, but everyone stayed silent.
Jean brought three fingers up to his lips before raising them above his head. Slowly, everyone around him began to do the same, the gesture spreading among the crowd. A single tear rolled down Jean's scarred cheek and Andrew took a deep breath before bringing three fingers to his own lips then raising them above his head.
"Happy Hunger Games!" Kathy cried, "And may the odds be ever in your favor."
They turned away, Kathy leading them both to the door at the back. Andrew flinched away from her touch, overtaking Marissa and pushing himself into the corridor.
"Andrew." Renee said, walking up to him.
"Not." Andrew spat out through gritted teeth.
He would not let himself cry; he would not let himself cry.
"We can talk on the train. I want to say goodbye to them."

Mercury Roadrunner: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We welcome you to the unofficial Russian Queen fan club special program. You can find our website at www.vk.com/queenrocks. I am knownn as Mercury Roadrunner. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Queen. And I’m very happy to say that this evening we have a very, very special guest here with us, and it is an opera critic, a book lover, biographer and writer, and close friend, confident and personal assistant of Freddie Mercury, Mr Peter Freestone. Hello, Peter. How are you? Peter Freestone: Hi. I am… okay. I’m good, I’m good. What can I say? I’m good. PS: You are good and you are very happy to join the other Queen fans who would be very happy to hear you finally talking. And the first topic is about your personal memories. It’s a historic date but what are your own personal memories of 13th of July, the Live Aid day, what were your feelings in general on that day? PF: For me, I suppose, it was just another show… [laughs] PS: Really? PF: Because I worked for Freddie and he was going to do a show. I didn’t separate that from all the other performers that were going to be there, that made it such an incredible day. And not only in London, when they were also performing in America as well at the same time. When the satellite was showing something from London, then it showed something from Philadelphia, then back to London again. So to say, for me it was… another day. It wasn’t even as though there were such a big show because we’d played stadiums in South America. So, it wasn’t the size of the audience. I suppose, when it really struck me what was happening was when the band went onto stage. And the roar from the crowd was absolutely amazing. Again, it wasn’t so different from normal shows because they’d actually rehearsed for their twenty minutes. You know, there was four days’ rehearsal. So to say, it was normal, it was normal work, it was a short show. But then, thing is, it was in daylight and Freddie could actually see the audience. And from the back of the stage, we could look through holes in the back, you know, the screen in the back. And we could see what the band could see. And… then it sort of struck me that, actually, this is something very special. And then I was really so very, very proud of them. At the end of their set, when, again, the audience reaction was indescribable. What they had done in those twenty minutes, they had picked up the whole audience, shook it around and put them back down again. PS: Indeed. PF: So, yeah, that was what I felt. PS: And do you remember some of Freddie’s jokes, maybe, during the day, the way he interacted with other superstars, like David Bowie or others? PF: The thing is, he [Freddie] was just one person amongst his peers, you know. All of the bands were names, they were bands. And the thing I have found, and this goes all the way – the real professionals are the most normal, approachable people on earth. It’s the wannabes who have the attitude of “Don’t you know who I am?” and who behave like stars, because stars behave like human beings. Real stars, they can be just like the rest of us. There was a time when Freddie just wanted to be on his own, you know, with just his friends, with his group of people. But I mean, there’s a few photographs of him chatting with various people, like Elton John and David Bowie. I remember seeing them with him, and Adam Ant. And, of course, he had friends along; I think Wayne Sleep was there as well. In his life, he [Freddie] needed people around him that made him laugh. And so, he still had that. David Bowie and he had been friends for so long. Elton [and he] had been friends for even longer. So, it was actually a chance for them to sit and catch up rather than, you know, being in front of the world press. They liked to spend time on their own, you know, talking to each other, really talking, not putting on a show. PS: So, I imagine that backstage on that day Freddie felt pretty much joyful and relaxed, right? PF: Yeah, on the day of the show, I never really saw Freddie nervous…
because, the thing is, it was too late by then [to be nervous]. You know, there was no point in being nervous anymore because the show was going to go on whether you were nervous or not. So, why be nervous? Just, you know, get on and do the show, enjoy yourself. PS: And do you remember, where did the idea of Freddie and Roger joining the Band Aid on stage in the final song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, came from? Or was it totally a spontaneous idea for them to join the others? PF: I think the idea at that point was that anybody who was around, who would stay on to the end – because don’t forget the show had started in the afternoon, so not everybody was going to be waiting – but then anybody who was left, who wanted to join, could go and join. There was no strict “You must do this, you have to do this, you have to be there”. It’s “If you want to, by all means come and do it.” PS: And we even have a picture of both of you, Freddie and you, on that day when Freddie wears a white shirt for “Is This The World That We Created”, and you stand right next to him and it’s a beautiful picture. PF: And Queen were the only band that actually kept their dressing room. Because all the other bands had to vacate their dressing room half an hour after they’d performed, so that the next band could come and use it. But because Brian and Freddie were performing “Is This The World That We Created” at the end, they got to keep their dressing room from the time they arrived. [laughs] PS: So they spent the rest of the day after the show in their dressing room? PF: Well, in or around their dressing room, yes. PS: They, like, had their Royal Queen place there. PF: That’s it. Anybody else had to go into the Hard Rock Café. There had to be a tent, you know, hospitality tent there. And most people ended up in there because they were not allowed into their dressing rooms, they didn’t have dressing rooms after that. So… that also helped Freddie relax. [laughs] PS: Like, his little bit of his own, right? PF: Yes. PS: All right. So, the second topic is about you, Peter. And you are credited as a “band party” member on The Works tour. Can you please clarify what a band party meaning is? Because I am assuming it’s like an entourage but it will be nice to hear the expanded definition from you. PF: Yeah, the band party, I think, was about ten or twelve people. It was the band members, their assistants – me, Chris Taylor was there, and Paul Prenter was there. If Jim Beach was on the tour at the time, he would have been part of the band party too. And some of the time Gerry Stickells was there. But often he would be ahead, making sure that everything was ready for when the band arrived. But that was it. There was about ten people. And there were baggage tags for each member of the band party. That’s why I know because I had Number 9, I think. And there were about twelve, I think, altogether, because at one point at the beginning I used to have to collect the band party baggage, so that’s why I always knew which were, even though I wouldn’t know whose bag was what. It would have one of these crew tags on it, so I just picked up and I knew that there were going to be twenty bags, so I just picked the twenty bags. But they were easy to identify because of these tags. PS: I see. And what is your own favourite memory about The Works tour and about this time, like, 1984, 1985? Maybe the Rio shows? PF: Yeah, I mean Rio was… amazing. The feeling from that crowd… you know, something like 350,000 people. Oh, you can’t beat that. And when you’re flying in a helicopter over that crowd, it was stunning. But the thing is, I know this sounds really, really stupid but [laughs]… one thing I will always, always remember from that tour was, remember, in the back of the stage you had these wheels that turned every now and then, not constantly but just every now and then. That was because there was… the guy looking after Roger’s drums and me who actually turned those wheels. And there was no set cue or anything that, “Oh, it has to start on this bar, on this song.” No, it
was when he wasn’t doing anything and I wasn’t doing anything, we’d say “Ok, let’s go and do it.” And we turned the wheels for a couple of minutes and then left them alone. He had then to do something for Roger and I would just sit there like I always did. And then you’d go back and you’d turn the wheels, like a hamster. We were like hamsters… So, that’s my memory of The Works tour. PS: And how technically did you operate those wheels? How was it possible? PF: With your hands. You just grabbed hold, you know, because it was like cogs on a wheel, and you just grabbed hold of them. Because we would be behind, I mean, I was always on John Deacon’s side, so I was hidden behind his bass setup. And you just pulled on the cogs because the whole wheel was on a metal axle and you just held there and you just pulled it down. PS: And the wheels actually were the real wheels, the big ones, right? PF: The very big ones in the back that moved, yeah. And they were made of, I think, polystyrene and plywood. So they weren’t very heavy. PS: So it was, like, actually you taking a part in the show, like, directing this? PF: Yes, I mean, you know, this is how things used to work in the old days before half of you were born. [laughs] You had to use your hands. I don’t think that a Queen tour as it is now is manual anymore. Everything is “push buttons” in it. PS: Yes, so it was indeed like the works, you had to work to make it work, right? PF: Yes, but nobody knew that’s how it works. They just saw these wheels turning every now and then. PS: It’s like a kind of magic indeed… PF: Yes, this was the whole thing with the Queen show – that people saw things happening but didn’t try and think “Oh, how do they do that?” If I see a big show now, I just think “How do they do that?” You’re not listening to the music anymore, you’re thinking “How do they get this to move? How do they get that?” But in the old days, you never did that, you just saw it move and it was part of the show. PS: You were just enjoying it, you didn’t have the time to analyse it. PF: Yeah. PS: I see. That’s a great memory, Peter. So, the third topic is about Freddie’s solo album, “Mr. Bad Guy” Freddie firstly wanted to name his solo album Made In Heaven and he even mentions that title in an interview with David Wigg. Why did he later decide to call it Mr Bad Guy? PF: I think he felt that Mr Bad Guy represented him more than Made In Heaven. And the lyrics to that song, everything. It sort of was very much about him. I think that’s why it changed. I actually love that song because it is real orchestra on it. And I was in the studio. I mean, it’s not a massive studio, so what they had to do, they had to record each section, so the strings section was there and recorded all their parts. And they went out. And woodwind recorded all their parts. Then brass recorded their parts. Then timpani came in and recorded. You know, they could not do everything together, so it was actually really quite complicated. But the end result, I think, is great. It reminds me very, very much of “The Carnival of the Animals”, the old classical piece. That was written by Camille Saint-Saëns. But that is what I’m immediately reminded of when I listen to “Mr Bad Guy”, you know. [starts to hum the song] You know, all the different pieces of the orchestra doing it, repeating it. Now, that for me is my favourite part. PS: I also enjoy it, I adore it. It’s truly a work of art from Freddie. PF: Yes, definitely, definitely. And I agree with him because it does represent him, multifaceted. You know, you never expect… He never gives you something that you expect. He always gives you something that will surprise you. PS: Yes. And why bad guy, why do you think Mr Bad Guy? Why bad? PF: Because… anytime in the press, there was never anything saying what a lovely man he is. So why not live up to his reputation? PS: Yes, it’s like “Yes, I’m everybody’s Mr Bad Guy,” yes. PF: Yes, this is it. This is what people want to believe, so this is what I will be. PS: Yes. And why do you think his first title was exactly not some
other track title but exactly “Made In Heaven”? Why was his first idea about exactly this song, to call the album this way? PF: I don’t know, I really cannot answer that one for you. I don’t know why he thought of that. Maybe he thought that would be the most popular track. A very popular track. PS: Yeah, it’s a hit song, totally remindful, yeah. And what was Freddie mostly like during the recording? What’s your favourite memory of him in this period? PF: That’s a lot more difficult because it was a difficult time. Munich. It took him far too long to create it. In the end, he was more interested in going out and spending time with Barbara Valentin than he was in creating work. I mean, the amount of time… he would turn up in the studio at two o’clock. Because he always turned up at two o’clock. It was pointless staying or coming at ten because he wouldn’t. And the thing is, it’s a singer’s voice, he’s not really ready to use [it] until later on in the afternoon. Once he’s warmed up properly and everything else. But the thing is, by four o’clock the phone would be ringing and Barbara was bored, so Freddie would run over and go out with her. So it was hard. And sometimes it felt like he was forcing himself to enjoy himself. Because he also felt bad, because he knew he should have been working, but he was letting his arm be twisted very, very, very easily. Yeah, I mean, okay, yes, he did enjoy himself when he was with Barbara, but he also had in the back of his mind that he was supposed to be working. PS: But the final result, I think, is totally great, he’s so much presented there. PF: It wasn’t the commercial success that people were expecting, but I think Freddie was happy with it in the end. PS: Yeah, it’s, like, his self-portrait songs. PF: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It got that music out of his system so that when he was back with Queen he was thinking more of the band stuff than, you know, things that the band would be happy with and just him happy with. Also, the thing is, Freddie did miss the rest of the band. He would never admit it but if you listen to some of the instrumentals on some of his solo tracks you could imagine Brian playing the guitar, you could imagine John playing the bass. You know, he missed having the band around him. PS: I see, I see. Even though it was his only first experience as his solo work, he already missed the other boys. PF: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because the thing is, all his recording before Mr. Bad Guy had always been with other people around. You know, even when he was producing the Peter Straker album, he had friends around him doing things. This was him on his own and it was all on his shoulders. PS: Yeah, and he worked on this album perfectly, it’s absolutely a masterpiece, yeah. So, the fourth topic is about Freddie’s and Roger’s connection. There is a story that Freddie heard Roger’s song “Heaven For Everyone” and he liked it so much that he wanted to sing it, and in the end The Cross, Roger Taylor’s band, released a version with Freddie’s vocals on it. And do you remember, had Freddie ever listened to Roger’s solo albums at home? PF: Freddie didn’t really listen to very much of anybody’s music at home. The only thing I remember... well, okay, yes, I remember putting on videos of Prince. But, musically, we would put on, we would buy every one that came out. It was a series of CD’s and albums, of course, before the CD’s, Now That’s What I Call Music. And what it would be, would be the sort of top hits of two months or something. And they would all be on Now That’s What I Call Music 1, then Now That’s What I Call Music 2. I think it’s on to Now That’s What I Call Music 373 at the moment. I don’t know. That was the music that he would put on, it was the music of the time. Because, you know, for his own music, for Queen music, that was work for him. And what concerns Freddie listening to Roger’s albums - probably what it would’ve been he would’ve listened to it when he and Roger met up. But it wouldn’t necessarily be at home they would put on the album. They would meet up and Roger would say,
“Oh, you must hear, listen to this, you have to hear this. This is something I’ve been working on,” you know, that sort of thing. PS: I see. And, you mentioned Freddie enjoying Prince, and it connects me with the fifth topic and it’s about the musician of the same age as Prince and it’s, like, a connection of Freddie Mercury from Queen and the Queen of Pop who is known as Madonna. What was Freddie’s attitude to Madonna? Because it’s almost impossible to imagine that he never ever mentioned her or never talked about her. PF: He admired her as… a woman surviving and winning in basically a man’s world. Yeah, because she was a power. And for that he admired her. Some of the music he quite liked. But there’s also the other side of the coin. Freddie, for all he was, had one security with him whenever he went out or everything. And Freddie felt that Madonna was actually attracting attention to herself rather than protecting herself. When she would go running in Hyde Park with ten security, you know, he said, “If she went with one person, people wouldn’t even notice her, but because she’s got ten people around her, then the whole world is going to notice. And you are best safe not like that but if you have just one person.” So, I mean, for that side he didn’t understand her thinking, but for her musical acumen and for her performance he thought she was fine, she was good. PS: And what is your personal attitude to Madonna? Do you like her? PF: Again, some of the things she’s done I think are very, very good. I don’t know, the more recent stuff I’m not so keen on. But all the first ten years or whatever of her stuff, I loved it. Yeah. Because, again, she never copied, she always did her own thing, and she never repeated herself. And I love originality. PS: And what is your own favourite memory about Freddie and Montserrat, Barcelona story in general? PF: I suppose it would have to be the actual recording of “Barcelona” because that was the first track that was completed. Freddie had sent Montserrat a tape giving her a guide vocal. Mike Moran had written out the music for her and sent it. So when she came in, when she arrived, she was fully, fully prepared for what was going to happen. But I remember being with Freddie after she’d done the first tape of her vocals for Barcelona, and… there were almost, almost, I mean, there were tears down his face. He was saying, “I now have the greatest voice in the world singing my music.” And that will always stay with me, always. PS: I see, so it was, like, very deep for him. And what is your favourite memory of Montserrat as a person? PF: Ah, a lot of memories. I went to pick her up at the airport, took her to the hotel, I would go and meet her at the hotel, go with her to the studio, all of that sort of things. And I was only in the studio when Montserrat was there. And when she was actually putting her vocal tracks down, the track was basically finished. I saw her so many times after the recording as well. You know, I went to see different performances of her. And it was because of her that I was actually at the Palais Garnier in Paris. You know, the opera house in Paris. Because she actually did an AIDS Gala there. And she invited me to go. I think… her laughter. It’s just like Freddie’s. Because whenever people ask me what’s my first memory, what is the memory that first comes to my mind of Freddie, and it’s always him laughing. And it’s the same with her. Whether she’s just finished a performance or actually when she’s doing a recital or a concert. And during her encores, she is always giggling and laughing. Amazing giggle. Because she likes to bring the audience in during the encores. And she’s got this infectious giggle. She invited me to the first night ever of her performing Isolde in “Tristan and Isolde” in Barcelona. And talking with her afterwards, I said, “You must know how wonderful it is for me to be coming here, to be seeing it, to be listening to you.” And she says, “Of course, you’re part of the family.” So, that really has always stuck with me. PS: So, the next topic for
today is Freddie spending time just making any kind of normal activities. And the question is firstly about his swimming skills – could Freddie actually swim, and if yes, did he enjoy it? PF: I never saw him swim. Never. I don’t know if he could swim. I’ve often thought about that and I never saw it. He didn’t… thinking about it, we went on a motor boat when we were at Pike’s hotel in Ibiza one time. And he didn’t look the most comfortable. So, I really don’t know if he could actually swim. I never saw him in a swimming pool or anything like that. Even when there was a swimming pool around, I never saw him in it. PS: But speaking of other activities, for example, you mentioned your staying at Pike’s hotel, he liked to play tennis there, right? PF: Yes. And, of course, when he was younger he was very good at table tennis. So, yeah, he enjoyed tennis. When we were living together with Freddie in Los Angeles, in that house, there was a tennis court as well and he played there a few times. PS: I see. And what are your other memories of Los Angeles? PF: Los Angeles. Also I remember in Los Angeles it was in L’Ermitage hotel when Queen were designing the Hot Space album cover there. They were there, maybe, even rehearsing for a tour or something. That’s the hotel I was staying in at that time. It was just this concrete glass and… stainless steel… and chrome. It was a very, very modern hotel. I remember, there were all band members, I was there, Chris Taylor was there, Paul Prenter was there. And they were throwing ideas around. And that’s where Freddie came up with the colours. “That’s the hot space, the space is the colours, hot colours.” PS: Ah, so it has something to do with image, with colour as you see it… PF: Yeah, yeah, yeah. PS: The hot like the bright one, right? A definitive one. PF: Yeah, yeah. PS: And he drew, like, a draught of the cover, right? Because he is credited as designer. PF: They were talking about which colours and then who would be which colour and then what they would put on each colour. You know, when they started talking about, not necessarily a profile but just picking out the aspects that people recognize from each artist, like Brian and his hair, Freddie and his moustache, you know, that sort of thing. PS: And so, each member chose the colour for himself by his own, right? PF: Yeah, yeah, yeah. PS: And how do you think, why Freddie chose the red colour? PF: Because it’s the colour that sticks out the most, although red was not his favourite colour, his favourite colour was yellow. But red is the one that you first look at. If you look at every sale, you know, big sale signs and everything, it’s always red on white. Because red is the colour you notice more. Apparently, whether it’s true or not, I don’t know, but in the old days police stopped more red cars than any other car. PS: Oh, really? PF: Yeah. Just psychologically red is the colour that stands out. PS: And Freddie being so outstanding wanted to strike everybody. PF: Yeah. PS: I see. And you mentioned Freddie and you spending time at Pike’s hotel. And what is also your personal favourite memory of this time. PF: I suppose the swimming pool was actually something nice. To actually think that we were in the swimming pool where Wham had recorded “Club Tropicana”. I mean, yeah, Pike’s. It was a nice hotel. They treated you well. They treated you personally, you know, they took care of you. And so it was a nice place. You really felt well-treated. PS: And what was, like, the top of the top on Freddie’s 41st birthday? What are your memories? PF: The most ridiculous thing is when guests went off into a corner and started smoking, so they weren’t smoking at the table and set light to the decorations. There were all these paper decorations hanging down the walls and everything. And people were there smoking and not looking at what they were doing, and they set light to them with their cigarettes. And then they started throwing alcohol to try and, you know, because it was wet they thought they would put the flames out. I mean, some people are not
very, very bright. [laughs] PS: I see. And what was your favourite memory of his previous one birthday, in 1986, the hat party? PF: Now, the hat party was a one-off, there was no other party quite like that, in Garden Lodge. Not with two hundred and something guests. Because the thing is, the thing that I loved about the fact was that nothing was put away. None of his vases or, you know, anything was put on tables. All the antiques and everything. Everything was left there. Because, okay, there were two hundred people but he actually knew them. He knew he could trust them. PS: And what was it like for him when he arrived back from his magnificent journey to Japan? PF: The thing is, it extended because he was then back home opening up all the packages that had arrived and the crates that had arrived. Because everything was sent over as soon as he bought it. So, the big room, the small room. Everything, all the rooms were full. And these, he had twelve of them. So, it was like Christmas. You know, a six-week Christmas. Because he was away enjoying himself and then opening up and putting it all around the house. PS: So, he was actually in Japan for six weeks, right? PF: No, no, he was in Japan, I think, for about three weeks. But then when he came back, he had three weeks of opening up and putting them all out. PS: So, he had a chance to enjoy his presents one more time, like, actually having them all. PF: Precisely, precisely. PS: So, it was, like, double joy – first to buy it and then to enjoy it at home. PF: Yes, yeah, yeah. PS: And mostly he bought antiques, right? PF: Yeah, I mean, he did actually buy some modern porcelain and things, but almost everything was antique. Almost everything. PS: I see. It was indeed a magic year for him. The Magic tour and the magic holiday… PF: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely. PS: I see, I see. So, as we are ending our first part by now, I’m saying to you a very, very big thank you, Peter. It’s amazing to hear all these stories about Freddie. PF: It’s been a pleasure, it’s a pleasure. SPECIAL THANKS TO VALUREX FOR CONTRIBUTION AND ASSISTENCE TO BE CONTINUED

carwood lipton x reader/david webster x reader
request : web, who you had a “thing” with, coming back, seeing you and one of the boys uh lipton? seem to have gotten rather close. with whatever ending you like!
love your playlists btw!!
this is long im so sorry, split into two parts. part two out soon !< 3
it was bitterly cold, not as cold as bastogne thank god but it was still cold enough to make your cheeks and the tip of your nose go red. lucky for you, you were positioned in a house for a bit alongside george and lipton.
lip was pretty sick, pneumonia, and you were protective of him. as you were to the majority of the men; if any of them got sick or hurt you just wanted to make them feel better and cheer them up anyway how but lip was extra special in your eyes. it was in bastogne where the two of you grew closer.
lip would often check up on you, more than he did with anyone else. he kept you company and vice versa. the conversation just was on a flow with him, and even the silences were welcoming and comforting with him. he was sweet and he was kind and you really started to admire him a lot more. you were friends beforehand but something about being alone with him in your foxhole in bastogne, you saw him in a different light.
especially on christmas eve when the two of you were huddled next to each other, shivering away. he really wanted to get you a christmas present, he really did but with the circumstances, obviously he couldn’t, the best he could do was a small bar of chocolate. it meant more to you than he thought. he couldn’t help but blush slightly as you whispered “merry christmas, lip” in his ear before kissing his cheek softly.
now you were in haguenau, helping george with some items whilst keeping an eye on lip. your eyes caught his and he gave you a small smile which you returned before he looked back down at the paper in his hands.
“hey look who it is” george called out, looking at the door way, “nice digs huh, lip?”
webster. david webster. there he was. your heart stopped for a second as the two of you made eye contact. you hadn't seen him in months; so much had changed.
web was a good friend of yours, all from day one of training. he was always looking out for you and always checked up on you; his eyes and smile were kind to you. when the two of you were stationed in england for a little while, the closeness between you two exceeded a little more.
the secret late night walks in the dark together, talking about anything really. the gentle brushes of each other's hands, both of you really wanting to hold the other. just like with lip, the conversation seemed to flow and even when neither of you were speaking, the silence was a pleasant one.
when he got shot you were instructed to go with him and help him get some aid. he wasn't dangerously injured but it was enough to get him out of the war for a little while. you pressed a small kiss to his cheek before he left, “ill write to you” you said in an effort to cheer him up, “i promise!” you added on afterwards to which he smiled (as best as he could in this situation) back to you.
you broke that promise. never did you write to him. as everything progressed in the war, something like that just slipped your mind and you simply just forgot to, until christmas in that foxhole is bastogne.
a lot of the guys had been given christmas letters and posts from family and friends. you weren’t expecting anything, so when you were tossed an envelope with your name written on as you sat in a hole in the ground on your own, it caught you by surprise. you couldn’t recognise the handwriting until you opened the letter and saw who it was from. it was from web himself.
there wasn’t a lot written. he wished you a merry christmas and that he was thinking of you and hoped everything was okay. the way he wrote was beautiful. and thats when it suddenly hit you that you were supposed to write to him a long while ago, you promised to and you never did.
tears brimmed in your eyes, threatening to spill as you finished the letter. the paper stayed in your hands as you stared at the words, your heart sinking as you read it again. a shaky sigh escaped your lips as you tucked the letter back in the envelope and shoved it in one of your pockets.
lip was on his daily check up on everyone when he came across your foxhole. he saw you sitting on your own, knees pulled up to your chest with your head resting atop. he spent the rest of the night next to you in that foxhole trying his very best to cheer you up. thats when you first kissed him on the cheek, wishing him a merry christmas.
“bet you're happy hes back, arent ya y/n?” george spoke up, taking you away from your thoughts.
“yeah” you replied with a small smile, the smile to no one in particular. you didn’t really want to face web right now nor lip , “i-uh, i gotta go give some things to winters ill be back in a bit”
it was a blatant lie, you had nothing to give to winters, you really just wanted to get away from the situation for a bit.
“Alright, be safe” george replied to you, cigarette hanging out his mouth.
“i will george” you spoke.
lip gave you a small smile as you walked past him, making eye contact with him quickly before leaving the room, although he was ill he was more concerned for you. the way you got quiet all of a sudden when web walked in, it was just unlike you completely. you didn't even say hi to web.
web on the other hand hadn’t seen you in months, he felt somewhat relived after seeing you but also was still hurt over the fact you hadn’t written. he really had feared the worst when you didnt write back but seeing you in person was a small relief, although you did look very different from when he last saw you. everyone did. bastogne changed everyone.

now that it's over, thoughts on Bendis' Superman as a whole?
pretenderoftheeast said: So, thoughts on Bendis' Superman and Action Comics' tenure altogether and separately now that it's over?
Anonymous said: Best and Worst things about Bendis' Superman run
Anonymous said: Now that it is over, what are your thoughts on Bendis' runs on Superman and Action Comics as a whole?
Anonymous said: Retrospective thoughts on Bendis' Superman as a whole now that it's, I guess, done?
Anonymous said: Hey so since Bendis’ Superman stuff seems to be done, what did you think of the run as a whole?
Tumblr media
I decided to hold off a bit on writing on this one, if only so that I could reread the Action Comics side of it since Superman stood out in my memory a lot more. But now I have, and as we’re heading into a bold new era of Superman (and it’s coming in fast - just since I made my Superman in 2021 predictions we’ve gotten Ed Pinsent finally reprinting his legendary bootleg Silver Age Superman, Steve Orlando announcing his Superman analogue book Project Patron, an official shonen Superman redesign for RWBY/Justice League, PKJ’s Super-debut turning out far better than I ever expected, Superman & Lois’s first proper trailer largely taking people pleasantly by surprise, and my learning that there’s a Sylvester Stallone Old Man Superman analogue movie titled Samaritan coming out this summer) we’re ready to take a look back with at least a touch of perspective. I’ll lead with complaints, so everybody who’s been waiting for me to say that Bendis on Superman was Bad, Actually, savor this because it’s as close as you’ll get.
The Bad
Tumblr media
* I hate to say it, but rereading that side of the run there’s no two ways about it: the structure of Action Comics as a whole is a mess. It baffled me from day one that it was the more acclaimed of the two books for so long - I guess people are hardwired at this point to think of ‘street’ stuff as where Bendis is supposed to be - because it was immediately clear that Superman had a well-defined story he wanted to tell, while Action was the usual Bendis off-the-cuff improvisation. It’s barely even a story in the same way, and it’s certainly not the ‘Metropolis crime book’ people took it as: it’s 28 issues of Superman and his supporting cast stuffed a pinball machine with the Red Cloud pinging off of each other as we wait to see who falls in the hole at the bottom, and partway through Leviathan and the Legion of Doom and 90s Superboy are tossed into the mix to keep it going a little longer. On an issue-to-issue basis it’s frequently really good, but the core plot of the book is *maybe* six issues stretched out over two and a half years.
* I’ve gone into this some before, but structure-wise Unity Saga also has problems: Phantom Planet rules but either it needed to be cut or the back half needed to be a year all its own in order to accommodate the scale of what it’s attempting. It’s got an interstellar civil war leading into the formation of the United Planets, family drama, Rogol Zaar’s whole deal, and Jon’s coming of age, and I’d say only that last one is really properly served. Even Jon forming the United Planets, while contextually somewhat justified in terms of 1. The situation being so far gone he’s the only one who’d even think in those terms, 2. Things being bad enough that these assorted galactic powers would be willing to try it, and 3. Him having the S on his chest to sell it, isn’t at all built up to within the run itself.
* Rogol Zaar sucks. He’s made up of nothing but interesting ideas - he’s an ersatz warrior ‘superman’ of a bygone age of empires up against the new model, he’s the sins of Krypton as a conservative superpower come home to roost, he’s while not outright said to be definitely Superman’s tragic half-brother and the culmination of everything this run does with Jor-El - but none of them manifest on the page, he’s just a big punchy dude with a dumb design who screams about how you should take him seriously because he’s totally the one who blew up Krypton. Even a killer redesign by Ryan Sook for Legion of Superheroes can’t fix that. There are lots of bad villains with good ideas who are redeemed with time and further effort, but I can’t imagine Zaar getting that TLC to become a fraction of whatever Bendis envisioned him as.
* The second year of Action Comics, after establishing itself in its first as one of the most consistently gorgeous books on the stands, leads with Szymon Kudranski’s weak output and then concludes with John Romita Jr. turning in some career-worst work. The latter is particularly egregious because for that first year Bendis writes a really collected, gentle Superman so him getting pushed into being more aggressive should have an impact, but Romita draws such a craggy rough-looking Superman in the first place that it mutes any sort of shock value.
 * WE NEVER LEARN WHAT’S UP WITH LEONE’S CAR, WHAT THE HELL. You don’t just DROP THAT IN THERE and then NEVER FOLLOW UP.
The Good
Tumblr media
* Superman got his real clothes back after 7 truly ridiculous years.
* Bendis fundamentally gets Clark’s voice in a way unlike almost any other writer - even all-around better writers of the character almost never approach how spot-on he is with having Superman speak and act exactly how Superman should.
* Supporting cast front and center! He writes a dynamite Lois, Perry, and Jimmy (even if many of Lois’s more out-there decisions in the run don’t end up retroactively justified the way you’d hope), Ma and Pa are more fun than they’ve been in decades in their brief appearances, he manages to turn having Jor-El in the mix into a positive, and the Daily Planet as a whole has an incredibly distinctive vibe to it like never before that I hope is taken as a baseline going forward.
* The non-Rogol Zaar baddies? All ruled. Invisible Mafia and Red Cloud are both brilliant ideas executed solidly if overextended. Zod as Kryptonian Vegeta, Mongul as a generational perpetual bastard engine primed to be incapable of self-reflection, and Ultraman as “what if Irredeemable but he’d never been a good guy and also he was a Jersey mobster” are the best versions of those characters by numberless light-eons. Lex is on-point in his sparse appearances. Xanadoth as a mystical cosmic monster older than time who still talks like a Bendis character is however unintentionally a hoot. The alt-universe Parasite is a more intimidating Doomsday than Doomsday ever was. And Synmar as an alien culture’s attempt at creating their own Superman and messing up the formula when they make him a soldier can and should be a legitimate major ongoing villain coming out of this run.
* Pretty much all the art other than what I mentioned already. Fabok does a good job bookending The Man of Steel and Ivan Reis does the work of his career anchoring Superman (special props to Reis as well for drawing the first ever non-Steve Rude interesting-looking take on Metropolis), and meanwhile you’ve got Jim Lee, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Doc Shaner, Steve Rude, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, Patrick Gleason, Yanick Paquette, Ryan Sook, Brandon Peterson, and David Lafuente doing their own parts.
* Closely related to the art, all the little flourishes with the powers. Super-speed having a consistent visual with the background coloring changing, Clark internally putting numbers to the degrees of force behind his punches and what situations which numbers are appropriate for, ‘skidding to a halt’ mid-flight before crashing through a window, the shonen-ass major throwdowns as portrayed by Reis, how his super-hearing is handled as a prevalent element. Lots of clever bits that added flavor to what he does.
* While Unity Saga has problems, the whole of what Bendis does in Superman as a means of forward momentum for Clark and his world is excellent. The sort of three-act structure of:
** Clark is led to question his place in things over the course of a few adventures
** Involvement in the larger cosmos and the impact it has had through and on his family makes him realize the answer to his questions is that he needs to step up in a bigger way because there’s no benevolent larger universe to welcome Earth with open arms, nor a cosmic precedent for everything turning out for the best without some help
** As a consequence of the lessons learned by this change in the status quo Clark is inspired to make his own personal change in revealing his identity (with Mythological basically being an epilogue showcasing a ‘standard’ standalone Superman adventure while simultaneously highlighting his new status quo and how it fits in as a summing-up of Bendis’s take)
…does a great job of shepherding through ideas that lend a lot of forward momentum to Superman of the kind he hasn’t seen in a long time. Not perfect, but far lesser stories with far lesser ambitions have made huge impacts, so I’d certainly hope at least some of this sticks around even if, say, regardless of any retcons to the main line there are always going to be stories with Clark as a disguise and Jon as a kid. Oh, speaking of whom,
* KISS MY ASS, EVERYTHING WITH JON KENT RULED
Tumblr media
Ahem. Probably a less confrontational way of putting that.
Do I think there was more gas in the tank for Jon as a kid? Totally, making him likeable and viable was the one really good thing the Rebirth era accomplished for Superman and I expect we’ll continue seeing more of it in the future one way or another. But whether or not him being aged up was Bendis’s decision, or working with marching orders to set up the eventually-(kinda-)discarded 5G, the coming of age narrative here is fire. He keeps the essential Clark Kent kindness and bit of Lois Lane cheekiness that reminds you he’s still their kid, which is a combination Bendis is basically precision-crafted to write, but his trials by fire give him a background entirely unlike the by-the-numbers “and here’s how Superman’s great kid grew up to be a great superhero too” narrative you’d expect while still arriving at that endpoint. If superheroes live and die by metaphors then Jon in here is what it means to grow up written as large as possible: leaving home for the first time (and seeming to shoot up overnight!), getting into the muck of how the real world works, being beaten down by authority wearing faces you’ve been taught to trust, scrambling to get through with the whole world against you, and in the end getting through by learning to rely on your own strength while keeping your soul intact and your head held high, and even managing to speak some truth to power. It gives him a well-defined life story with room to go back to and explore the intricacies of each leg of for decades to come in a way Superman hasn’t had since the original Crisis - someone someday is going to write a The Life & Times Of The Son Of Superman miniseries and it’s going to be one of the greats - and negates any question that he’s earned his stature as the heir apparent.
* Coming out of this, Superman’s world is fascinating. He’s out but rather than giving up his day-to-day life he’s openly spending part of his life as CLARK KENT: SUPER-REPORTER and part of his job on the cape-and-tights side of things is now KAL-EL: SUPER-SPACE-DIPLOMAT, Lois Lane coruns a foundation helping people whose personal continuities have been fucked over by Crisis shenanigans, Jimmy Olsen owns the Daily Planet but is still doing Jimmy Olsen stuff because that’s how he gets his kicks, and Jon Kent is going to college in the future. I’m not anywhere near naïve enough to think that’s how things are going to be forever, or shortsighted enough to think there’s no value left in the traditional setups, but god I hope these developments stick around for a long, long time to come and potentially become the new ‘normal’ as far as the ongoing shared universe stuff goes, because it all feels like the right and promising next steps to take for the lives of these characters. However it got here, for all the pluses and minuses along the way even if I maintain the former very much outweighed the latter as a reading experience, Bendis has a lot to be proud of if that’s the legacy he leaves on these titles.
* The recap pages at the desks!

A collective post of everything I watched on Netflix in 2020
I finally found the watch history function on Netflix which I wanted in order to reminisce over the TV/film I watched over the last year, including the good and the bad. I’ve included a little round-up of my thoughts for each, as lockdown has got me with plenty of time on my hands. If anyone has watched any of the below feel free to give me a message- happy to discuss anything!
Travelers (season 3) - this was an unforgettable show with some great characters and definitely put me through hell (in a good way), I am a David x Marcy shipper for sure!
IT Crowd (season 4 & 5) - my favourite comedy show ever, and I mean the UK version
Explained (random episodes) - interesting bite-sized episodes on a variety of topics
Sherlock (season 3 & 4) - it kinda went downhill from season 4...and doesn’t help that there is no season 5 in sight
Unforgettable - must be pretty forgettable cause I couldn’t remember watching, a typical revenge plot romp I think
The Mind, Explained - same as for Explained above, except more pyshcological
You (season 2) - binge-worthy! I love to hate Joe Goldberg.
Don’t F**k with Cats - wow, this was disturbing but so gripping.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - geniunely a good remake and rather amusing
Sex, Explained - as for Explained but a little more intriguing ;)
The Stranger (season 1) - full of suspense and a good binge watch but ultimately full of plot holes with an unsatisfying conclusion
Gavin & Stacey (season 3) - a classic which I only started watching in 2019
Sex Education (all of it) - comedy gold!
Unbelievable (limited series) - very harrowing, an emotional rollercoaster based on a real-life rape case
Atypical (all of it) - light-hearted and fun to binge
The Sinner (season 1) - it was okay... wasn’t spectacular compared to other similar dramas I’ve seen
Love Is Blind (season 1) - cringey but satisfying
In the Shadow of the Moon - I hardly remember this one :)
Dunkirk - a stand-out historical movie
The Stepfather - typical killer stepfather plot but rather enjoyable
The Super - an interesting premise, but not that super
Saw VI - all gore not much plot
Doctor Who (random episodes) - no words needed :D
Louis Theroux and Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends (random episodes) - I love his style of interviewing - what a man!
The Revenant - a lot of... well, not much
Nightcrawler - it was decent, but something was missing which I couldn’t put my finger on
How To Get Away With Murder (seasons 1-5) - probably my biggest new watch of the year, a rollercoaster of suspense, drama and murder, another season to go...
Ocean’s Eleven - fun but cheesey
Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare - creepy faces and an interesting ending
Eli - it started one way then went another, I wasn’t convinced
Star Trek (2009) - I couldn’t really get into this one...
In the Tall Grass - a lot of running around in grass
Bloodride (season 1) - i loved this, a quirky idea, i binged it
Apostle - intense, a satisfying religious cult horror
The Platform - great idea, not sure on the ending
What Keeps You Alive - what happened in this one again?
History 101 - didn’t watch many episodes :P
The Prodigy - a decent child possession horror
Into the Night (season 1) - really enjoyed this, a highlight of the year for me, hoping for a season 2
It - pretty chilling and creepy, but a tad cheesey
Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - the first one has a brilliant dinosaur fight scene, the second one has too many plot holes and inconsistencies to take seriously
Knowing - a Nicholas Cage sci-fi/apocalpytic classic, pretty decent
Stranger Things (random episodes) - i tried to get my bf into the show but sadly he still isn’t much of a TV fan
Miranda (random episodes) - such fun!
Black Mirror (seasons 1 & 2) - another one i introduced the bf to, i got a bit further with him on this one, the very first episode being the highlight
The Last House on the Left - a decent remake, but nothing outstanding
Dark (season 3) - this, my friends, is one of the greatest shows of all time. want a timey-wimey story where everything is connected and has an amazingly satisfying conclusion? this is the show for you!
The Silence - a bad ‘A Quiet Place’
Geostorm - i’m a fan of disaster movies but this one wasn’t in the same league as some of the greats
Panic Room - a mum and kid hides in the panic room when a group of thugs break into the house, it was enjoyable but not all that memorable
Prisoners - a very long film with some enjoyable parts but overall unsatisfying
Girl on the Third Floor - it was okay, i can’t remember much of it
The Woods (season 1) - another Harlan Coben adaptation- not as good as ‘Safe’ or ‘The Stranger’ but still a gripping thriller
Time Trap - a fun time-travel film with some interesting turns of events
72 Dangerous/Cutest Animals (random episodes) - just ‘cause i love animals
Slasher (all of it) - some very gory deaths, especially in season 3. quite disturbing but keeps the suspense up throughout.
2012 - a guilty pleasure of mine, realistic or not
Kingsman: The Secret Service - a fun spy film, will be looking to watch the second one soon
Blackfish - this was harrowing, it really made me think, but overall i’m on the side of tilikum
Unsolved Mysteries (season 1 & 2) - watching some of these my jaw dropped, love theorising on this kind of stuff
Down to Earth with Zac Efron (season 1) - Zac is great in this, he seems so chill and literally ‘down to earth’
The Call - I love this film, seen it 3 times now
Contagion - very relatable right now, interesting to see the parallels with todays situation
Next in Fashion (season 1) - i didn’t get too far with this, i found it a little superficial
Searching - another of those internet web-cam based films. decent but not memorable.
Non-stop - another Nicholas Cage classic, this time a suspense thriller
Freaks - as the title suggests this one was rather weird, i didn’t quite gel with it
The Perfection - wow, that was an experience. definitely memorable, even if some characters make questionable decisions...
Extraction - not usually a fan of action-type thrillers, but i actually enjoyed this one, plus it has Chris Hemsworth in it!
Line of Duty (season 2) - full of suspense, a great build-up in the first 5 episodes, but the way they tied it up really grated on me
Insidious - watched this one with my sister. a genuinely good horror film on rewatch with an amazing cliff-hanger
A Quiet Place - another one watched with my sister. labelled a horror but its more sci-fi, either way its a classic. bring on the second film!
The Dark Tower - disappointing mostly.
Gladiator - i’d never seen this before and now i understand the hype- what an epic movie!
Criminal UK (season 2) - didn’t disappoint following the exceptional first season
Venom - a fun comedic marvel film, definitely need to watch more from Marvel in the next year- i need an order to watch them in as don’t know where to start
Our Planet (season 1) - chill David Attenborough to put on in the background
The Equalizer - a great action revenge thriller plot with a badass Denzel
Merlin (random episodes) - who doesn’t love a trip down memory lane with some nostalgic bbc merlin?
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) - pretty scary remake
The Witcher (season 1) - rewatched in order to familiarise myself again before season 2 - i didn’t realise how funny the show was until this time round, gotta love Jaskier!
American Murder: The Family Next Door - this was haunting
The Haunting of Bly Manor - phenomenal, emotional, creepy, heartbreaking - i much preferred it to Hill House
Abducted in Plain Sight - seriously, how naive are the parents in this? i could have a rant for hours about this!
The End of the F***ing World (seasons 1 & 2) - very bingeable, Alyssa makes me laugh too much, i love how relatable the show is
Fractured - didn’t expect much from this consipiracy-type film but it kept me guessing right till the end
The Ripper (limited series) - very intriguing, but the mysogyny in this was shocking
Inconceivable - a typical mother looking for her baby revenge plot but still entertaining
The Midnight Sky - i’d heard rave reviews for this but was disappointed by a lacklustre plot which was sacrificed for award-winning cinematography
Killer Women with Piers Morgan (season 2) - a pyschological interview series which looks into the mind of murderers, rather interesting
May the Devil Take You - scarier and jumpier than i thought it would be!
So 2020 obviously gave me a lot of time to watch a s**t load of stuff and looking back at it i feel like i got a decent amount of my watch-list ticked off! And obviously this is not including shows watched on other media so there’s that too (a special shout-out to the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who which I watched this year on BritBox). In all, 2020 has definitely introduced me to a few new fandoms and progressed my love for others.
