he still ends up meeting the jiang's. he befriends jiang cheng, who at first is a bit cold to him but warms up after they start talking about their favourite foods, and his two dogs, and he admires jiang yanli from afar because he thinks she's a really pretty girl and he shouldn't annoy her.

years go by and, by the time the jiang clan is invited to gusu for cultivation, weiying is best friends with both of the jiang's. jiang fiangmen requests the lan clan if weiying, his best friend's son, could come along with them and, the lan clan being as accepting as they are, they, well, accept.

there, weiying meets huaisang, who he had seen at the lotus cove a few times over the years. he is fascinated by his fans and they talk and talk and talk until lan qiren tells them to shut up or one of them is sent outside to have punishment (it's mostly weiying, huaisang has a way-too-innocent face for lan qiren to do anything).

there, of course, he meets lan wangji. it's not after he sneaks out alcohol and is caught, he sees him pass by while he's going to his first class and weiying is mesmerized by him. his eyes and head follow him until he turns a corner and he snaps out of it, mostly because jiang cheng is telling him to not cause too much trouble, but he doesn't pay too much attention, his mind occupied with those golden eyes.

he meets the wen siblings while he's searching for that secret spot everyone from the lan clan was hiding from him after he is punished for speaking up for one of his classmates. wen ning is practising his archery and, having trained with a bow and arrow for his whole life, weiying decides to help him. wen qing, who was previously looking for herbs, when she sees a stranger next to her little brother, she gets protective and almost draws her sword, not until she sees the smile in wen ning's face and she decides wei wuxian is a man she can trust. she later approaches them and weiying thinks she's a really intimidating woman, but the more they talk, the softer she looks, so he promises to himself to make sure these two don't get dragged into the mess that is their clan.

i have a feeling that if the wei family all survived we would've gotten an even stronger wei wuxian. like, imagine how powerful weiying would be if he didn't have childhood traumas and was (almost) always being happy.. exactly
