When I think about what so called "AI" LLMs are doing to the internet right now I feel a pit in my stomach. My whole life, the internet has been a vector for real communication between real people. For better or worse every thought and image was in some way the product of a real person.

Increasingly, the internet has been being flooded with language model sludge. It started with GPT-2 and 3 but has really taken off with recent advancements like chatGPT and the various image generators.

Look up an obscure topic - what's the ideal length for hair waxing, for instance? And chances are that before finding any useful information, you'll stumble across an article generated by one of these pseudo-AIs from top to bottom, stuffed full with SEO word salad and straight up wrong, often confidently misleading information.

Go on a twitter thread started by someone of even moderate fame, talking about anything really, and deep down in there you'll find meaningless repetitive AI sludge, usually from a bot account with an NFT profile pic trying to advertise some web3 garbage.

Human content is starting to, in key places, be overwhelmed with this detritus. I worry we might have to go back to the ol "web 1.0" model of doing things sooner than later if we don't want to see real human conversation and creativity completely drowned.
