me whenever i see people write off annabeth as an annoying and controlling and crazily jealous girlfriend with anger issues. understanding that the foundation of the rhetoric is based off of annabeth's behavior toward percy and rachel is tbotl and tlo. except annabeth's behavior in those books is soley due to the surplus amount of traumatic experiences she's had. ranging from her parents neglecting to care for her well-being when spiders attacked her in the middle of the night as a seven-year-old. to watching everyone she's ever dared to care for die, abandon, or leave her for a better option. so it's much more likely than annabeth was expressing great mental and emotional distress during a period of her life where it was uncertain if the boy she loved would drop dead on his sixteenth birthday. on top of having to uphold a reputation as the best strategist at camp half-blood and devise a plan to fight in a war and save the world before she's a sophomore in high school. so the notion that annabeth is an abusive and toxic individual lacks the consideration that maybe she was just a child forced to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders at all times.

Of course I'm aware of the headcanon. But I love the fandom hype we get on a set date and I loove kid Steve Bucky stories where they watch fireworks in celebration. You know that famous headcanon where Bucky told Steve that the fireworks are for him? Also how the young men couldn't afford anything else than just watching fireworks together and that was more than enough for Steve?

Also imagine if Steves birthday is actually 4th July? Now everyone thinks it's a propaganda piece. So it's one other thing that got taken away from Steve when he signed himself up to be government property.

i finished statius' ACHILLEID. thoughts thoughts thoughts:

i knew going in it was a VERY short unfinished epic, but i didn't know it would be FUN?? if i ever get that time machine, FIRST THING i go back and find one publius papinius statius, i lock him in a room, and i'm NOT letting him out until he's finished the achilleid!

achilles is statius' BLORBO in a way neither homer, quintus nor virgil have blorbos. statius likes achilles to be strong and pretty and graceful, but most of all ENDEARING even when he fails. and he fails a lot, because this is him still figuring out how to be an adult, not to mention a prophesied legend literally everyone is waiting for to step up

the one thing that gets tiring is just how many prophecies permeate the achilleid. nothing's left to chance, there are so few unknowns. even ODYSSEUS was aware that from peleus' wedding there would come a child destined to be a central warrior in an upcoming gigantic war.

as it stands, the achilleid is more of a... thetisiad? she is very centered in the narrative (we spend more time looking at things from her point of view than achilles') and there is SO MUCH SYMPATHY for her, oh my gosh!! she loves ONE person, her son, the only worthwhile thing she got out of a traumatizing marriage, and she despairs that he's fated to die young in a silly human war.

also i'm a deidamia defender forever now. so three-dimensional, so clever!

aughhh i love how much characterization statius puts in, even in the small scenes! my favourite example is odysseus and diomedes as they walk up to lycomedes' place (literally just moving characters from A to B). diomedes teases odysseus, and odysseus is delighted to be teased. that night we're told odysseus CAN'T SLEEP because he's too excited about showing off his plan the next morning!

the unveiling of achilles is completely different from the chagrined defeat/"achilles is a fucking idiot" ways i've heard it retold! i love that it's collaborative, it's a mutual triumph. it's just as much achilles (who's been suffering in gender dysphoria hell for a year) longing to be exposed as it is odysseus LIVING for showing everyone (especially diomedes?) how clever he is. it's not just the shield and the spear and the bugle, it's odysseus playing the part of the siren, whispering in achilles' ear that he knows who he is and describing how glorious he will be on the trojan battlefield. it's achilles' grateful relief at being ALLOWED not to pretend anymore as he rips off his own dress even before the bugle calls

also it's very important to me that the moment he's no longer hunching over trying to make himself look small and inoffensive, we're told achilles is taller than both odysseus and diomedes

i KEEP IMAGINING how good statius would have made the rest!! especially because as book ii ends, achilles regards odysseus as a cool uncle; he's the guy who rescued him! i want to think statius would have put in the big mystery quarrel achilles and odysseus are said to have had early in the war, something to drastically change that affection. i want to know how statius would have handled troilus, and the gods. augh statius you roman BLUEBALLER

an assortment of story beats still revolving in my head:

chiron is such a sweetheart!! he's SO gallant with thetis, he's so affectionate with achilles. he HIDES HIS TEARS when achilles leaves, awww

statius writes out phoinix completely. as a phoinix stan i object. sure chiron can raise young achilles, but i NEED phoinix to tend to him as a baby

i enjoy how achilles EXPLODES into a mess of teenagerly hormones when he first sees deidaima. it's so funny that thetis is looking on (and we get my favourite simile of the achilleid, of a herdsman delighting in a young bull snorting and foaming at a beautiful heifer) like "aaaaand there's my son's sexual awakening. i see! well, we can use that" and THAT explains why achilles is so willing to commit to the female disguise

(listen. listen. few things mean more to me than the love between achilles and patroclus. but achilles is a teenage boy at the age when a fucking breeze will give him a boner, and deidamia is the most beautiful and the cleverest of her sisters. i really enjoy a story where achilles and deidamia are neither "fated eternal true love" or one's a sneaky opportunist. it's much more compelling that they're both knots of budding emotions and bodily feedback)

i notice that statius never uses the name pyrrha, he doesn't seem to have a fake name at all, just "achilles' sister"

lycomedes is SO honoured and proud that thetis is entrusting her daughter to him. i feel sorry for lycomedes, he seems so earnest and hasn't done anything to get tricked

the one thing i can't forgive statius for is that after spending SO much time establishing that achilles and deidamia (who knows he's a guy) are genuinely into each other, it feels like statius goes OUT OF HIS WAY assuring us that their first sexual encounter is rape. sure they talk right after, deidamia forgives him, AND i understand there are social rules that makes deidamia more "honourable" and "worthy" when she resists, but like. sigh.

aLONG with the previously mentioned interplay between odysseus and diomedes as they walk up to lycomedes' court, there's a simile where they're both starving wolves on the hunt. so sexy it's almost illegal

the feast scene is SO FUNNY omg. all of achilles' careful feminine training dissolving because odysseus and diomedes are there with their boundless masculinity for him to feed off of. deidamia practically WRESTLING achilles back down on the couch every time he forgets himself and behaves too much like a man. odysseus chatting with lycomedes SPECIFICALLY trying to rile up achilles, and then after the women have left (achilles dragging his feet and looking back, YEARNING for their male company) odysseus specifically praises the maiden's "almost masculine" beauty (because ohh he suspects. he just needs to prove it in the morning. he can't SLEEP for it)

when they depart, achilles earnestly swears to deidamia that no other women shall ever bear his children. i find it interesting as a reminder of the social rules of its era. neither of them expect achilles to be sexually exclusive, just not fathering potential heirs. which again makes me wonder about the contraceptives in ancient greece

on the ship towards aulis, diomedes begs achilles to tell them all about his feats and training with chiron, and achilles is so shy about it! who can blame him! diomedes has a WAY more impressive track record

odysseus is SO good at firing up achilles' outrage at paris even as he's just catching him up on what the war's about. and he's so pleased at how easily achilles' outrage can be directed! you KNOW that would have developed in such an interesting way AUGH THE REST WOULD HAVE BEEN SO GOOD.

Ford's Dreams; Attraction and Asexuality

In Bill's quips in TBOB on what the characters dream about, the quip he had on Ford caught my eye: "Sixer dreams about a pop quiz that asks him "what are you attracted to?" He usually writes "I'm attracted to logic and preparation." Not sure what to call that! Plansexual?". Immediately upon reading it, it made me question the implicit meanings of that small blurb, on Ford's sexuality (as someone whose aroace) and on the potential reason why such a dream was reoccurring, which I've explored below:

The first of two pages in TBOB on Bill's quips on characters dreams; this page includes Ford's, Dippers, Mabel's and Wendy's dream comments.

First of all, there are two types of quips Bill makes about the characters dreams. First, and the main type of comment, are negatively connotated, generally close to or even are nightmares. Dipper, about over hearing his parents fight about divorce, Mabel who has nightmares about waddles dying, Wendy who dreams about her Mom, who died, Stan's about Ford getting stuck in his science fair experiment, and Pacifica about the lumberjack ghost and blood that doesn't wash off her hands. Most of these are things that play off subconscious or conscious fears or grief (or memories in relation to fear or grief). The second type of quip, are goofs; such as Robbie's real hair colour, or Blubs and Durland only dreaming about each other (both on the other page, not depicted). So where does Ford's comment for in? At first glance, Ford's dream quip somewhat comes out as a goof (especially considering the horrible things he's gone through and seen). But for a central, serious character, and considering the context of the book, I really don't think this is a goof, but more of the first type of quip, on darker/nightmare sort of dreams.

But if it's is a nightmare, then why would a pop quiz about what he's attracted to be nightmare material?

First of all, regarding the set up of the dream, a quiz explicitly implies that you are being judged on your answer. There is a rubric for right or wrong answers, and someone, in a higher position of power, often in an academic institution, judges you by this. Ford is a character that's been clearly driven for the good first half of his life by excellency in academic achievement, and this implies that it's very important to him to get the quiz correct, to have the right answer, and that he fears being wrong.

Now on the subject matter of what the quiz entails; the subject of romance and attraction. Regarding canon, romance isn't one we get particularly clear images on with Ford, compared to Stan who flirts and literally goes out on a date during the series. We only really ever get two direct human interactions that could be implied to be considered romantic in nature (sorry fiddauthor's, there isn't anything from Ford's side of things that imply any extra feelings beyond cherished friend; Fiddleford in the other hand...). These are when he speaks to a girl at a dance and gets juice thrown on him, and in Journal 3 on the page that decodes on the page about himself to "LITTLE CATHY WHAT A DREAM HELD HER HAND AND MADE HER SCREAM". (There is also technically the one throw away line about Ford dating a siren in one of the Lost Legends comics, which would be the only time we know of Ford actually being in a romantic relationship; but that's something that never gets elaborated on, and when Dipper says that he's literally reading from the Bill page from Journal 3, so I'm unsure on the weight of such a statement). Compulsory heteronormativity aside as demanded by censors, both the implied attempts don't go well, and in the second one it directly implies Ford's six fingers are directly part of the reason why he's undesirable. Ford clearly deeply struggles with belonging around his 'weirdness'; case in point with the whole page about it in Journal 3. In this case, his bad luck in romance as a teen, possibly as a result of his 'wierdness', continues to alienate him from other people. As a result, a quiz focusing on romance may further remind Ford about his 'wrongness' as he doesn't have the socially expected romantic relationship.

However, what's perhaps more telling about it is that the quiz asks what are you attracted too?, which is more sexual than really romantic in nature. And it's telling because what Ford puts down is logic and preparation. These aren't physical attributes as one may assume to answer these questions; neither is it gendered, or even really based on a person, but rather left open as the concepts (ie, he doesn't say someone who is logical and well-prepared). This Bill even jokes about, with 'plan-sexual'. And Ford's answer is not a typical 'male' answer (in the toxic sense, but also, just generally, since people experience sexual attraction) which Bill also notes with the joke. This 'incorrect' answer could be construed as another thing that's wrong with him, especially back in the day; emphasizing again Ford's wrong-ness and alienation.

Not to mention, beyond those two instances described above (interestingly, these occur previous to Ford's falling out with Stan, in which after he highly prioritizes academic achievement) Ford shows no interest in romantic relationships. This disinterest in pursuing romance is contrary to a lot of people who are still workaholics who have significant others/hook-up on the weekend in their meager time off. Ford's general disinterest in romance is also something that others him, with how our society puts so much emphasis on romantic and sexual relationships. And this is something that IMMEDIATELY caught my eye as someone whose within the general ballpark of aroace; there is a huge amount of alienation from society when you are disinterested in sexual/romantic relationships. Especially when toxic masculinity expects you to constantly be horny. So having someone ask you that question of what you are attracted too is awkward, and depending on the audience, socially difficult question to field. And often an answer to that comes out sounding exactly like Ford's, based on personality rather than physical attributes, if you don't decide to come out (not that Ford would know queer jargon anyways). So this question, posed in a quiz, with Ford being quite Ace-coded, would bring up these feelings of alienation, along with those about failure on not having the right 'answer' regarding attractiveness and the failure of not having a girlfriend.

The infamous Billford page in TBOB, of 'one thing led to another'. Also note Ford saying that Bill's "really got it all figured out".

Now, beyond that, we're also reading this in the context of TBOB. Even before the new info in TBOB, Ford openly worshipped Bill; and in TBOB it becomes clear that they certainly had something going on between them (cough, one thing lead to another, cough). This suggests that Ford found Bill attractive in some form of attraction, whether romantic, sexual or queer-platonic-ish. This especially so, considering the answer Ford puts down; logic and preparation. Bill, who corrected and furthered Ford's knowledge, who came to him as a being of pure knowledge (logic), and who helped him plan the portal, who ironically also had other plans of world domination beyond that (preparation). Bill fits the description, even if he's not human, but Ford's not bothered by that, Ford's a freak himself and it's clear in finding that acceptance he's ecstatic (freak4freak). And that attraction, that care Ford had/has for Bill? Now that's something that's horrifying, something that's filled with guilt, terror, and also embarrassment and fear of how others will react; case in point with Ford literally ripping those journal pages out so the others don't know about the extent of his and Bill's relationship, and in TBOB he acknowledges that. And that's not to mention the potential additives of negative emotions from failing to have attraction for the right person, from failing to meet toxic masculinity standards, and the emphasis of being a freak that made him fall for Bill. Now that's emotionally negatively charged for a fucking nightmare.

Like. Fuck. What are you attracted too? The being that I thought was a god of pure knowledge and thought that strung me along like a fish on line with bait of knowledge and companionship, and I ate that bait, hook, line, and sinker, so deep within my belly I fell in love with him; the being that betrayed me, that wants to destroy my world and used me to do it. The being I shouldn't even love in the first place, because you're supposed to love what's normal, but I've never been able to do that as a freak show. The being I've spent half my life hunting down to kill. And now here I am, with this fucking mess of my own making, after threats and torture and the world ending, and some small fucking part of me still loves him.

So, yeah. I don't think that's just a comedy line. I think that's a line that potentially has way more about Ford's feelings of alienation, of his failure to be attracted to the right person, of guilt and fear around his relationship with Bill, and especially so of others perceiving it.

"In the weeks since Weirdmageddon, I conducted numerous tests on Stanley's mind (his terrible jokes are still intact) and inspected the state for dimensional leakage (we also took turns kicking the statue, and Stanley took a few cracks with a crowbar). I burned every Cipher-shaped item I had ever collected, and even threw away all my one-dollar bills, just to be safe (Stanley, of course, found and pocketed them).

(It kinda strikes me that the BoB Lost Journal pages about Stan sound far more like post-portal Ford’s opinions on Stan instead, where he’s openly angry at both being pushed into the portal + at the portal being opened again + his murder suicide attempt being foiled + Stan disowning him + turning his house into a tourist trap + taking his identity vs pre-portal Ford being more… melodramatic(?) constantly being reminded of him but not wanting to linger too long? idk the vibes are different

Plus pre-portal Ford pretty consistently only calls Stan "S” or just refers to him as his brother (with the exception of him writing his name in a Caesar cipher). I think he only ever messes up the general naming scheme a single time when he wrote Fiddleford instead of F

Now, there's an interesting thought exercise.

We're starting with the assumption that The Reader of TBOB is an independent unseen & unnamed character, not just you-the-reader. We're assuming this because (like I mentioned in the post that originally preceded this ask when I received it two months ago) The Reader does several specific things and has several specific actions that might not generalize to every reader.

In fact, I'll go a step farther: we know that TBOB is supposed to be able to update live as the reader reads it (for example: Bill interrupting the page on his weaknesses to Gatsby us; Bill asking for blood and reacting to receiving blood all on the same page, implying that his reaction must have only appeared on the page after getting blood). And so, I headcanon that the book we read is how TBOB looks after The Reader is done with it—after the Theraprism staff has inserted their note and confiscated the book from Bill, thus preventing him from making any more updates to it, permanently fixing it in the form it was last in when Bill had his hands on it. We're not reading Bill talking to "us"—we're reading his half of a conversation he was having with someone who held the book before "us."

So what do we know about this hypothetical reader?

- They know about the main characters of Gravity Falls. Bill doesn't have to explain who Ford, Stan, Dipper, Mabel etc are. He just dives into talking about them like he assumes the reader knows exactly who they are and he's confident that learning their dirty laundry will be appealing. On the other hand, he DOES stop to tell them about who other people are: the Henchmaniacs, Time Baby, the Shaman, the Anti-Cipherites; so he doesn't just take it for granted that they'll know anyone he's talking about. He has some reason to think they know about the residents of Gravity Falls, specifically. (This is noteworthy if we're assuming the reader ISN'T from our world and thus DIDN'T watch the cartoon.)

- They haven't met Bill before—he says at the start of the book that this is their first meeting. But, they do know who Bill is in general—also at the start of the book, he says he's sure the reader is thinking about how he's all-powerful, allegedly dead, and also imaginary. A reader unfamiliar with Bill could've gotten "allegedly dead" from Ford's note, but not the rest.

- They're either from a reality where Bill is imaginary—such as the Real World™—or from a reality where Bill is believed to be imaginary—such as, say, the regular canon Gravity Falls world. The reader could be somebody who read some old Ciphertology pamphlets and went "what a goofy made-up god," got their hands on an old Elias Inkwell Cipher Symphonies cartoon, heard about the medieval English "bastard triangle" superstitions, knows about the "summon a cryptid triangle with spaghetti" urban legend... etc. There's lots of ways a reader could believe Bill to be "imaginary" while not being from our real world.

- In spite of knowing who the Pines family is, reading Ford's warning about the book, and soon seeing that Bill's clearly real, they're willing to, in rapid succession: 1. become the book's new master and summon Bill (at this point they MIGHT still believe the book's a hoax), 2. agree to take Bill's deal, a favor in exchange for knowledge & secrets (at this point the book's animating itself in their hands so they know this is The Real Bill), and 3. give the book their blood. From that point onward, Bill starts rearranging the reader's brain, so we can't assume that their actions are exactly the same as they would have been at the start of the book—but up to that point, their actions are all their own, and they're game to make a deal with Bill and give him their blood.

- At the end of the book, when The Reader's mildly delirious from blood loss and Bill has removed their shame, fear, hesitance, and kicked up their impulsivity—even then, reading the letters from the Pines family is enough to convince them not to follow through with helping Bill take over the world. So when they're as clear-headed as possible they'd knowingly make a deal with Bill, but also when they're at their most emotionally compromised the Pines' words can still talk them down from attempting Weirdmageddon.

- We can pick up a few personal details on them from what Bill says about them (they crave love, sugar, and salt; they want to know about Bill's weaknesses; they're VERY convinced that Bill must be lying about never being in love; they've had at least one perverted thought in their life; etc), but since the authorial intent is that the things Bill says about The Reader can apply to as many IRL readers as possible, these are still deliberately pretty broad & generic even if they can't apply to 100% of readers.

- Because the questions about Bill's love life are framed like things the reader is saying and Bill is clearly frustrated with these questions, I think it'd be reasonable to theorize that some of the other headings in the book that are framed like rhetorical questions are actually being asked by The Reader. (ex: "Bill, if you died, then where are you now?" "How does it feel to be half alive?") So from our perspective Bill's the only one steering this ship and just assuming what we-the-readers want to know about, but in The True Reader's hands, they may have played a significant part in choosing the topics and flat out asked Bill about things they wanted to know about.

- They seem to be familiar enough with Ford's journals that Bill thinks offering them a handful of lost pages will be the just the thing to fully win them over (or else keep them distracted enough for Bill to finish rewiring their brain lol)...

and this is where I think we can make a good guess about where The Reader comes from.

When Journal 3 was about to come out, OregonParksDept on twitter popped up to roleplay as a park ranger named Gus who finds Journal 3 in the dirt, asks if anyone knows whose it is, says he's gonna ask some other rangers to look at it, and then locks it up stating that everyone who read the book either got headaches or nightmares. J3 is later sold to the public at a bake sale. Since at the end of Journal 3, Ford says he's tossing his journals into the Bottomless Pit, we can assume J3 must have landed in Gus's dimension.

And then, when TBOB's going to come out, Gus discovers it (probably fell through the same rift as J3), tries to burn it up, and then mysteriously disappears; some other ranger uses the Oregon Parks Dept twitter to ask the public for info on his disappearance, and Bill's hotline and TINAWD suggest Bill set Gus on fire.

But, the twitter account still has Gus's earlier liveblog of trying to destroy the book. Meaning whatever ranger updated it next must have seen Gus's saga. They know about TBOB's existence and that it was related to Gus's disappearance; and, as we know thanks to both Gus and Ford, if you destroy or discard TBOB it'll just come right back to you.

So here's my theory:

The Reader is a ranger at the same station as Gus. (Or someone close to the rangers—a volunteer, a spouse, a kid—someone who's in and out of the ranger stations all the time, at any rate. Someone in a position to reach TBOB.) They read J3, which is why they knew about Gravity Falls and the broad strokes of Bill's plot and knew enough about the Pines family to be interested in their lives, and particularly knew enough to be interested in missing journal pages; and why they didn't know about characters like the Henchmaniacs or Anti-Cipherites, which is why Bill had to explain about them.

When Gus opens TBOB properly for the first time, Bill writes a personal letter to him; when The Reader opens it, Bill's letter shows he knows some things about them—but things only related to what they'd currently be thinking about ("Wow it's bill! Is he real? Shouldn't he be dead?"), not biographical details like with Gus. There's an obvious Doylist reason for that, but my Watsonian explanation is that Bill got a chance to spy on Gus, likely through J3, but didn't get that opportunity with The Reader so he's having to skim their surface-level thoughts and do a cold read on them. Maybe The Reader read J3 way later than the other rangers.

It's possible The Reader bought J3 at the Oregon Parks Dept sale and read it, then became a ranger because they read it and wanted to be somewhere they could find out more.

Since Gus seems totally baffled by TBOB and doesn't connect it with J3, Gus probably didn't read J3 very closely; most of the other rangers probably didn't either; so The Reader is likely the only one who powered through the headaches and/or nightmares to read the whole thing and learn its secrets. So whoever they are, they're cut from the same cloth as Ford & Dipper (which lines up with the fact that Bill doesn't try to tempt them into a deal with money, love, fame, power, etc., but rather with knowledge and secrets).

Thus, when TBOB inevitably teleports back into the ranger station, The Reader is the only one at the ranger station who knows what they're looking at. They recognize the logo of the triangle with a top hat; they know who Bill is; they recognize the handwriting in the letter at the front warning readers away from the book. Journal 3 is a diary describing things that never happened in a town that doesn't exist, when The Reader read it they probably told themself it had to be fake... right? right??

And that's why, when they open TBOB, they're sure Bill must be imaginary—but very ready to be persuaded that he's real.

Of course, the book had to be blank when they opened it. They probably made a deal with the book (and even offered it their blood) telling themself they were just doing this to try to find out what happened to Gus, that would sure be a good excuse to justify making contact with a megalomaniacal god... but, once Bill starts talking to them, he doesn't mention Gus once. So it seems The Reader was pretty quick to push their dead coworker out of their mind in favor of pumping Bill Cipher for the secrets of the universe.

And that, I think, is the measure by which we should judge the Reader's character: they're basically Ford if Ford was actually a callous, heartless prick. They also summoned up Bill for knowledge and wisdom, but they already knew he's tried to conquer the universe, they knew he's killed people—including someone they know and work with—and it's not on their mind at all as they interact with him. All they're interested in is Bill, what he knows, and where Journal 3 is from. Is it any wonder Bill's so quick to conclude they're the perfect new minion?

And yet, they're not so far gone that they can't be talked down by the Pines family's letters. Which is unexpected, given what we do know about The Reader.

Maybe they're cold and callous and disconnected from their fellow man, but subconsciously crave the kind of family bonds the Pines family has and realize that that's what they really longed for in J3, not the mysteries and secrets. (Bill does say they crave love more than anything else.) Maybe they had a budding parasocial obsession with Bill, and reading the lost journal pages and seeing how devastated Bill was to lose Ford broke through their fantasies and made them realize they're never gonna be Bill's special little human the way Ford was—just in time to hit the letters where Ford talks about what a loser Bill really is and how much happier he is to be rid of him. Maybe it was just Stan pointing out "if Bill's afterlife is so great, why won't he admit where he is?" that gave them second thoughts.

So they may be a callous, heartless prick, but they're not totally gone. There's a bit of humanity in them yet.

What they do with TBOB after that, we don't know, because that's the point at which the Theraprism catches Bill and he loses the ability to update the book, thus locking it into the form in which we read it.

- One bonus point: in the deluxe version of the book, Bill directs a specific note to "Chris" who thinks they live in Minnesota and who's been in a coma for 12 years—which is weird, if we're going by the theory that Bill's personalizing the entire book to speak to one specific person. So my headcanon is The Reader is named Chris (or "Chris" is short for their full name, at least—Christine, Christopher, Antichrist, whatever), they grew up in Minnesota, they have nightmares about being stuck back home where they grew up, and they read a good portion of TBOB in a sleep-deprived blood-loss-induced delirium and keep ducking into a half-dream where they're having the "I'm back in Minnesota" nightmare, and Bill's gotta snap them out of it and get them to focus on his book again. (Minnesota is real and they haven't been in a coma for 12 years, that was Bill indulging in a little recreational gaslighting.)
