Baahubali: Fact Vs. Fiction

“Prabhas and Rana were not the original choices”

The entire team of Baahubali worked so hard for 5 years on the 2 films, so it’d be great if people didn’t disrespect the actors by recasting their roles. Also for the love of God, kill the rumors that the movie was first offered to Hrithik Roshan or John Abraham or whatever bollywood actor’s diminishing career you’re trying to validate. Here’s proof from Rana himself:

“Surprisingly it is quite difficult for people to believe that he was on board even before the script was done. I wanted to make this huge, epic war film for a long time and we didn’t have the script on hand, but somehow I knew that he was my protagonist. I used to tell him…I didn’t have the story so I didn’t have anything to tell him, but I used to tell him the kind of historical kings we had, the characterizations of Rana Prathap, the characterizations of Sivaji, of Sri Krishna Devaraya, of all of the kings of India. And I used to tell him that these are the lines that I’m thinking on and wanted him to play. He loved it, he loved the idea, and when I finally told him the story of Baahubali, and said that I would be needing him for one or one and a half year, he laughed and he said ‘You’re not going to make this in one and a half year, I know it will take more time, let it be two or three years, I’m there for you’ and he gave his dates without committing to any other film”

“The VFX was done with hollywood talent”

There were also so rumors that Baahubali utilized the same VFX team that worked on Jurrassic World which was denied by producer, Shobu Yarlagadda. One of the co-founders of Makuta VFX, which previously worked with Rajamouli on Magadheera, Maryada Ramanna, and Eega, stated: “ Most of Baahubali was developed in Hyderabad, home to Tollywood, and used local talent. It was principally a homegrown feature produced by homegrown talent.“

“Karan Johar came on board because Baahubali needed Bollywood money to be made.”

That’s not true. Arka Media Works produced both films. What started as a single film, shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil was then split into two after realizing the scope of the story. The Hindi version was not on the cards until Rana, who has bollywood connections due to his prior movies, pitched the film to Karan Johar and convinced him of its capacity to be a national phenomenon. Then only did Karan Johar come on board as a presenter. He certainly deserves credit for heavily promoting the film and grabbing bollywood’s attention by having his name attached but he was not involved in the film making process. Rajamouli has stated many times that if Prabhas committed to Baahubali by not taking on any other projects, Rana did so by being the team’s “mascot” and taking it to new terrain.

“Rajamouli enhanced the character of Devasena after the criticism of Avanthika in the first part”

I have my personal opinions about the character of Avanthika but in general some of the criticism the character received is valid. However, the character of Devasena was not changed in order to avoid the backlash. Devasena is the character she was since the film went on floors. When the movie was first started, it was supposed to be a single film which is why they began shooting with the flashback portions that are seen in the second part. This still, which is from a scene in The Conclusion, surfaced even before the release of the first part which shows that the story did not change much. Also, the team has stated in many interviews that they did not make any changes to the story after the response to the first one. They did make some changes in terms of editing and VFX but the characterizations did not change.

Tamanna has said before that she came on board pretty late into the making. Its highly likely that the character of Avanthika was added to bring some “masala” and appeal to a larger audience. If you consider the role of Avanthika, the film could have technically happened without her in the story but that is not the case for the strong characterization of Devasena which is the driving force of second part’s plot. This isn’t to excuse some of the issues with Avanthika’s character but just to say that it was a result of last minute tweaking and Devasena was not was an “afterthought”.

“The Hindi audience supported Baahubali more than the Telugu audience”

Obviously if we look at the numbers, the Hindi version did bring in more money than the Telugu Version. However, its really unfair to say that Telugu people did not support the film as much when it was us who saw its rise from being a rumored project to the sensation it is today. If you want to look at the numbers, just look at the stats of the Hindi audience vs. Telugu. The Hindi speaking population in India is almost at 50% whereas Telugu is around 8%. Then take into account people living in the diaspora and there’s no way we can compete. Also there is a huge audience that does not speak any of the languages the film released in and by default probably saw the Hindi version because its closest to their native language or the one they’re most familiar with. Either way, we shouldn't quantify support with BO numbers because the odds are always going to against non-Hindi speakers. Don’t take this victory away from the Telugu industry that has long been ridiculed in the national media for producing only “masala” films. Don’t make this about you, because its really, really not. oh and btw, STOP TAGGING BAAHUBALI CONTENT AS BOLLYWOOD

Final Thoughts

Its really easy for us to sit here and just say, ‘of course they all gave their time and dedication to this project, anyone, given the chance, would have. its a once in a lifetime kind of franchise’. But keep in mind that when the film first began production, it was seen as HUGE gamble that had the capacity to end careers if it had gone wrong. It’s because they committed to this project and worked day and night on it that it is what it is today, not in spite of it. So please don’t undermine their success and hard work by basically deeming them as replaceable and let’s give credit where its due. 

Of course no cinema is without its faults but sometimes we just need to set aside our critical lens and lets ourselves succumb to the masterpiece in all its glory.

Also the team is full of genuinely kind and humble people who have racked up a lot of goodwill over the years in the industry and I couldn’t be happier that they’re the ones receiving all this success and glory because if it was anyone else, it probably would’ve gone to their heads.

RADHA JOGENDRA

This movie is neither Nene Raju Nene Mantri nor Naan Aanaiyittal for me. Its the story of RadhaJogendra and so be it because man, what a couple these two were. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t think of throwing my tiny fists at his pretty face when he cheats on her but his emotions right after has made up for it almost... (nah, i still want to punch him for more reasons than just that)

So yeah, Rana-man does his eccentric magic again with this movie. And Kajal compliments him so well in every frame (my god *touchwood* you two). I don’t think any of you want spoilers on cause its been just a day since the movie released, so I will refrain from spilling the story except what they have already revealed in their endless promotional streak.

This movie is a blind love story (yes so much blind that he can’t see his wife in her eyes bc of what he did at a point) set in an edgy political theme, of a simple man called Radha Jogendra. We get to see his entire life - rise to power, fall and redemption all because of his need for vengeance that he actually tries to justify by saying he did it all for his lovely wife. Jogendra makes you love and hate him in equal measures. That constant conflict is apparent on the faces of the people around him as well, trust me. His only redeeming factor is his love for his wife Radha which comes under question when the smart but emotionally stupid Rani (Catherine Tresa) makes her entry. The only other character that I adored over the leads was Shiva (Navdeep was a cutie patootie), whose loyalty Jogendra never deserved. 

The cast was brilliant and Rana is in another league altogether after his phenomenal Bhallaladeva (there are many instances where you can see him channelling Bhalla). Kajal wins you over with her emotional portrayal of a wife with a steady moral compass that’s caught between supporting and going against her husband (she does that only after he has pushed her to her limits tho). The climax  was something I expected after the penultimate twist in the movie. After some unfortunate times, director Teja is back in action. He has left no stones unturned with the current political system in India and the story serves as a wake up call for the general audience (aka., the common people) to stand up against the selfish politics and the politicians when the need arises. Its a film with a meaningful message. Compared to the rapid time jumps in the first part of the movie, the second half was a drag (a better cut could fix it probably??) The songs were a part of the narrative and I liked them enough. But Jogendra’s BGM deserves special mention. Also, keep in mind that its a commercial Telugu film. So you might have to keep your grimace in check at certain scenes (they are very few and far in between). Overall, it was worth all the groundbreaking and sleepless promotions on Ranabae’s part. He did it again. Now rest my precious man!!

1. Which language do you prefer to watch the movies in and why? If you’ve watched multiple versions, are there any translation choices in one version that you prefer? I first watched it in Tamil, and then in Telugu. Problem is, I love both equally? I love the voice modulations that were given by dubbing artistes in the Tamil version. But I also love Prabhas’ (his promise to Deva on the bridge in his voice KILLED me, okay), and Rana’s (if i could just record his voice and hear it forever, I would. 2. Your favorite song picturization. Oru Yaagam/Oka Praanam. What a brilliant way to recall the first movie’s key points! The deep percussion (sort of reminiscent of a heartbeat), with the strings, and the voice, completely blending and elevating the absolutely brilliant VFX work -- fascinating would be an understatement. I still get goosebumps when I watch it.

3. Devasena or Sivagami? Devasena. Sivagami is a well-written character, a strong female with her own flaws and faults. But Deva is just on a whole other level. When she goes “antha ingitham kooda illaiya?!”(”Don’t you even have that much of sense?!”) I pretty much lost it. She stole my heart right from the get-go. 

4. It’s not a fandom without shipping. Share a headcanon about your OTP, or your NoTP, or that one non-canon ship that is intriguing, or all three! OTP is AmarSena forevereverever and ever. Headcanon that Amara was with Deva in the 25 years in spirit, and only she could see him. He sings her to sleep, distracts her from the discomfort, ‘travels’ around Mahishmati and tells her all that he sees, and just perhaps, he tells her of Mahendra growing up. Maybe that’s why she was so sure her son would come for her even though he was believed to be dead, because Amara assured her of his existence. He finally vanishes for good after Bhalla is defeated, his soul is finally ‘at peace’. Deva doesn’t see him again, not till she passes on. A little cartoonish, maybe, but I needed to imagine this to soothe my ravaged heart. 

5. Kuntala or Mahishmati? Kuntala. Such a visual treat that kingdom was! <3 

6. The scene(s) you could watch over and over again. AmarSena fighting the Pindaris together. Eeeps. I still cannot get over the perfection that the scene was. Also, the interval scene. Once again, goosebumps!

7. Like it or not, get in touch with your inner Bijjaladeva: think of your favorite character, and tell us one thing that annoys you about him/her. Devasena. Hmm. I guess the girl could try to know when to speak? I love how she keep nothing bottled up, and I loved it when she kept lashing out at Rajamata. But, I feel like she could’ve done it in private?

8. Kattappa or Bhalladeva? Bhallaladeva. Kattappa is great, no doubt, but I am bitter about him killing Amara. Besides, Bhalla is one villain I actually admire. So cunning. I hate him, but I low-key like how his brain works.

9. Time to channel Amarendra instead: think of your least favorite character, and do your best to come up with one positive thing about him/her. Bijjaladeva. Erm. This is hard. It’s nice that...actually survived the battle and made it to Mahendra’s coronation? And handed Deva the crown himself? Though I suspect he was made to do it. He could’ve attempted to do some shady shit and kill someone, but he didn’t so...that’s one good thing. 

10. Everyone’s got an unpopular/controversial opinion, no matter what the fandom. Let’s hear yours! Don’t know if this is unpopular or not, but I didn’t like Mahendra taking Avantika’s mission from her. Story-wise, that’s an important point, yes. He needed to get to Mahishmati himself and rescue his mother. But...I wish it was written better. Avantika could’ve gone with him? Maybe? I don’t know. That part still doesn’t sit with me...

11. Choose your favorite fandom sorting mechanism (i.e. Hogwarts houses, daemons, Game of Thrones houses) or more than one if you’re really feeling adventurous. Tell us what results you think the main Baahubali characters would have. Because I sort practically everyone I know (in real life and in fiction) into Hogwarts Houses, I am gonna be very unoriginal and do just that. 

Amarendra - Ravenclaw. Brave, sure, but his wit finishes half the battle before his bravery does. To me, at least. 

Devasena - Um, I feel like if there ever were a crossover, she’d be the founder of Gryffindor, and not Godric? 

Mahendra - Gryffindor, no two ways about that.

Avatika - Eh....Either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff? I’m gonna go with Gryffindor.

Sivagami - Either Slytherin or Gryffindor...Gonna go with the latter.

Bijjala - SQUID. BYE BRO. 

Bhallaladeva - Slytherin. He could fit into Gryffindor, he is brave, but nah. Bhalla’s basically the poster child for Slytherin.

Kattappa - Hufflepuff. 

12. Let’s pretend Rajamouli has decided to make a oneshot film about any period of time not covered by the films, whether before, after, or during the events we see–but only one. What would you want it to be about? Devasena, Mahendra and Avantika ruling Mahismati together. I needed more mother-son moments, as well as more depth to Avantika’s character and Mahendra-Avantika relationship. I’d love to see a post-Baahubali take on that.

13. Avantika or Mahendra/Shivu(du)?  I love Mahendra’s child-like curiosity and nature. But I like Avantika, too? :( Gonna go with Mahendra.

TV Show - Game of Thrones. How original, right? I know :)

Book - Rise of Sivagami. We get more of this world we have grown to love. Though I haven’t read it myself, so I can’t say much about it. But it’s definitely something I’d read to battle withdrawal symptoms.

Movies - Mirchi. Prabhas/Anushka pair once again and I LOVE them to bits. And (spoiler alert) no one gets killed there so I don’t have to cry buckets.

yea- i live in india too <3 my mother tongue is telugu :) and choosing college and university is really difficult because now if you wanna join into uni, you need a free seat(reservation) for medical and for engineering you don't need it because they are more seat reserved and the division for girls seats is 33% (that's a good point, if girls would take engineering, but most of them take medical, do you know that?)

basically this is what i know but i don't think it'll be hard to apply because you get a good rank and percentage, colleges and uni would call you for admission, so yea- this is indian education system. i don't know everything clearly, please do tell me if i am wrong :)

lmao, roommates, i mean i'd love roomies as long as they are not chaotic but i love chaotic people :') and i need to write my boards and not until i get my results, i just have to wait till may :( my birthday is on feb 23, hehe.

my day went good yesterday and on saturday we actually went on hunt for medical colleges and last two weeks we hunted for engineering colleges, so i have interest in both. ngl i love biology but i hate medical because it takes all of my time, and i wouldn't have time to talk to you at least but i love science a lot since young :( well, my parents said "leave her for a month or two, she'll take whatever she wants too" lmao, i'm totally confused but they have me time ;)

yea- and most of the hostels don't allow electronics and they are pretty strict lmao, i think i won't choose a hostel because i'll miss all my friends, parents and you too <3 so i wouldn't risk my life for jailing myself in hostel for two years T_T

btw sorry for the late reply, i was busy on saturday as i said and sunday we went out for a little family trip, just a few miles away <3

and i have my second dose between 12 feb to 23 feb, so i think i'll go tomorrow. and i love how organized you are *sniffs* like really, i'm too stunned to speak. i wish i had an organized life too, i'm making them right by spending time with my interest i have on things, but it's still pretty hard to get used to the timings :)

that’s great that you got to look at both colleges :o was there a campus that you liked better? 🥰 also biology is rlly good for medical !! but make sure you deeply consider what job/career you want in the future because i know people who went into medical who were good with bio and chem, but then they burned out because they couldn’t imagine going through it all to become a doctor with med school and boards 🤧 im sure the process of becoming a doctor is different there tho ! but take your time and you’ll know what to do !! i’m sure you’ll thrive where you go 🌷🌷 i’m glad you’re not staying at the hostel tho bc i cant imagine being away from my friends and family without being able to talk to them D: you need to be around ppl who are supporting you and checking in !! 💓
