One thing that pisses me off is that Black History month is advertised more than Native American History month.
Native American History Month happens in November.
NOVEMBER. A LITERAL MONTH WHERE PEOPLE SKIP OVER THE MOST IMPORTANT HOLIDAY INVOLVING SAID NATIVE AMERICANS. BECAUSE AMERICANS ARE TOO BUSY WAITING FOR A FAT GUY TO BREAK INTO THEIR HOUSE TO DO REVERSE STEALING.
I feel like it should be a law that after middle school, each high school grade year, we learn about all of the cultures. Freshman is Black History, Sophmore is Native Americans, Junior is Mexican History, and Senior is Asian Culture.
It feels desperately unfair that the only reason we knew native americans is because of racist cartoons, thanksgiving, and columbus. The only reason I found out about what REALLY happened to native americans IS BECAUSE I MOVED TO OKLAHOMA.
1900s Cartoons stereotyped Native Americans as violent, smoking, red-faced idiots. Mexicans as Illegal bordercrossers and don't know how to keep it in their pants. Asians as dumb dumb guys who just eat rice and say "ching chong" >:(
WE AS AMERICA SHOULD CHANGE THAT.
#thebekashow#angry vent#native american#asian culture#mexican culture#black history month#mexican history month#native american history month#THESE GUYS DESERVED LOVE TO AND WE AS SOCIETY MADE THEM LOOK BAD.#all of them are people too >:(

i don't want anyone to get upset by this because that's neither the intended reaction nor really the appropriate one. i'm also not talking about anyone specifically, and i don't think i even have mutuals who do this (and if i do i haven't realized it so rest assured i'm not talking about you), but.
if you have 10+ muses (or even less, really), and they're aaaaaaall white... why? i assume at least a chunk of the time people don't realize they've done this, but i also feel like that's unlikely, honestly, as much as diversity comes up, even just in general within the rpc. i also just can't imagine how you wouldn't realize. idk, just maybe consider why you do this, and think about how internalized racism plays into it. then, maybe do better.
#ooc.#i don't want some idiot coming in my inbox saying “why do you think it's wrong to write white people” either#cause i never said that#white people exist and i don't think there's anything wrong with having white muses at ALL#esp cause these are the faces we see the most in media so i get it they're on everyone's minds#and i think in some (select few) cases it wouldn't be appropriate to use a poc fc for certain muses#but girl you got 50 muses and they're AAAAALLL white???#idk i find that so suspicious#this black history month consider changing one of your fcs#lola was cuban when i first made him and then an old friend of mine suggested i make him black#and i was like ok. and i'm so glad i did#anyway i'm begging everyone not to get pressed about this i mean it as nicely as possible while still expressing how i feel about it

So, I was watching Dark History, and realized that this very situation in the beginning of the story is eerily similar to our current day Luigi situation. A "respected white man" gets killed, and the rich-folk go NUTS... and wouldn't you know it, that's a very Italian name on the guy they're claiming is guilty without even being close to a hint of a trial - and the cops couldn't blame a black or brown man this time, after all.
Anyways, you should watch this incredibly well-researched video about the Sicilian lynchings. Do be warned that some of the descriptions of the deaths of Italians are gruesome - the depiction of racism is EXTREME at some points (but she never once repeats any slurs used!). But it is American history...and we should strive not to repeat it. Oh right - they also, after all the hate crimes were committed, said they should make immigration laws tighter... they don't want more 'criminal Italians' coming into the country. A rhetoric that sounds familiar, just re-contextualized, in the modern day.

#racism#murder#death#american history#italian history#american italian#us history#dark history#lynching#luigi mangione#this really made me think about the united health care stuff going on#it really does feel like “We can't blame a black man so blame an Italian”#tell me I'm wrong - bc hearing this history made me sick to my stomach in a way that only learning about African American history has done#rich people keep erasing the history of their crimes from history books in schools so they can keep doing them every generation#Youtube

community college is so funny because half of the teachers are like "For this class you need to use lockdown browser for all quizzes and tests. You need to buy this 70 dollar textbook, and all papers turned in must be in APA format with a title page even if they're only 500 words long. I will not accept late assignments. Also you have a minimum of 4 assignments a week." and the other half are like "you don't need proctoring for the final exam I trust you. here's a download link to a pirated copy of the textbook. as long as your writing is coherent and demonstrates an understanding of the material I literally could not care less what format you use. I can't figure out how canvas works so I'm not giving you due dates, just make sure it's turned in before the grading period ends. your only weekly assignment is a forum post with a minimum of 100 words."
#my favorite teacher so far is still the film history professor I had in my first semester.#he was very old and didn't understand how canvas worked at all and sometimes had trouble opening a video file#but simultaneously he was tech literate enough to recommend we use firefox with an ad blocker#because whenever someone missed class and was like 'where do i go to find the movie' he'd be like 'use an ad blocker and google it'#he said the school made him stop emailing links to free movie sites because people would open them on chrome with no ad block#and there'd be borderline malware on them. like this guy gave me the impression he was like. a veteran movie pirate lol.#that class had barely any assignments. like there wasn't a final exam or anything.#he just wanted us to write a paragraph or so answering a few questions about the movies we watched. it was chill.#and i also learned a lot actually. like i didn't know what a nickelodeon was before then. or the Hays Code.#the movies were genuinely good. i never thought Id be that into old black and white movies or westerns for example but they actually slapped#some of them had really mature themes and i definitely started to understand the people on this website who are like#'if the only media you consume is children's media you should maybe branch out instead of calling steven universe problematic'#because a lot of the movies we watched depicted very 'problematic' things and were able to directly address them because they are for adults#(to clarify I didn't just like kids media before then. i just mean that it introduced me to some older stuff i didn't think I'd like)#(but i ended up liking a lot. it also made me realize that movies made today are kind of shit. which i also already knew)#(but it put it more into perspective because I have more to compare it to)#im rambling now. community college is pretty swag i enjoy it. and i do get along with the teachers who have crazy requirements too lol.

I've seen some takes on our beloved hellsite that indicate that many people don't understand why a character would not feel safe being out in 2005, and I think they might find this short little blog about Sally Ride very enlightening.
It was this part that really resonated with me.
Well, the arc of moral history is long, but the arc of recent LGBTQ+ civil rights history has bent extraordinarily toward justice in the last dozen years. Think back. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell wasn’t repealed until 2010, just two years before Ride’s death. President Obama didn’t come out in support of of same-sex marriage until May 2012, just two months before her death. And of course same-sex marriage rights, perhaps our most high-profile legal victory, weren’t conferred on all Americans until 2015, two years after her death. History isn’t terribly ancient, and the recent strides we’ve made in queer rights are continually in peril as the far-right backlash to, well, really everything good and progressive continues unabated.
#queer history#lgbtquia+ history#our rights in the US have been hard won#and the progress we've made is much more recent than many seem to realize#not to mention in terrible danger of backsliding here in the US#the same goes for black rights and equality#it isn't ancient history#for me it was my parents (as kids) and my grandparents (as adults) generations that were involved in that#Ruby Bridges is the just a few years younger than my parents#never forget that what we've fought so hard for can be lost if we do not continue to fight for it

The only people who benefit when black people and jews are divided are white supremacists
#research at my job rn is focused on the time frame at twitter immediately after kanye said all that stuff#so im having to read the absolute worst takes ever#about bs that he was saying at the time#and a lot of people were really exposed to these antisemitic conspiracy theories through kanye#and it just makes me really fucking sad idk#we are stronger when we are together#like jews have always been at civil rights rallies and fighting for equality of all kinds#we both experience discrimination and persecution from the same people#it isnt a competition white supremacists hate us too#a lot of the antisemitism im seeing from this sample set is the same conspiracies that have been around for thousands of years#about jews controlling minorities#so that they can... idk control the world and oppress white people?#but i cant recall a time where minorities actually started to believe they were being controlled by jews before this sample set#it hurts it really does#anyway ill always support black people and jews and i dont have to choose between the two#i took a course with some incredible professors that are like the forefront academics of african american and african diasporic studies#called the intersectionality of jewishness and blackness#our histories arent just parallel#theyre intertwined#anyway ill get off my soapbox i just have to read this bullshit for my job and it made me upset lol#jumblr#judaism#frumblr#jewblr

the fact that the us government can continue funding and arming a genocide despite massive public opposition really highlights how inherently non-democratic the united states is
#almost like the idea of a representative demcracy is both historically undemocratic and inherently is incapable of being so#by historically i mean that representative democracies have always meant the creation of a category of ‘citizen’ that is above ‘non-citizen#even the civilization where the term democracy comes from was patriarchal and had fucking slavery#not chattel slavery but (hot take) non chattel slavery is still bad.#also fundamentally one person can literally not represent the wishes of a large collection of people who have only geography in common.#theyre going to want different things!!!#now the idea of if democracy is inherently a virtue is like. another topic. but i will say that like seeing the history of like the#popular sovreignty movement wrt to slavery really made me question it. just because a lot of people want something to happen doesnt#actually mean it should happen. white people voted to legalize slavery#kind of where the old ‘minority’ terminology comes in. just by numbers alone in the states that had these votes it wasnt like in the south#where in the south because of plantations the actual population majority in some places was black.#but in those midwestern new states even if everyone person there could have voted. white people would still be the vasy majority.#honestly to a degree pointing out that none of the societies that have claimed to be democracies have truly been democratic is…#i guess the primary value in it is to challenge people who take state mythologies at face level#a very large population that i often forget exists.#the ‘they cant do that its illegal’ types.#anyways. if we consider that every society in documented history has had some type of violence and oppression#and if we believe that people are NOT inherently selfish/violent#it follows that what we need to do is something different than what we have been doing.#not just different from what we are doing right now. but different from what we have been doing for the past centuries#but also i can imagine that societies and ways of living that aren’t legible to the status quo or just went undocumented for other reasons#may have been more egalitarian. and we dont know due to erasure (either intentional or non-intentional)#both erasure and a fundamental inability of historians to comprehend it. similar to how cishet historians who cant fathom the idea of#transness or lesbianism talk about things.

thats why it hurts my brain too when ppl have intense ass arguments abt what race specific "hard to classify" groups are
the balkans are just one example of this bc weve been considered a bunch of shit throughout history and we exist in a weird position always but. there are So Many ethnic groups and regions of the world which are like this
and ppl will go on entire things with the upmost seriousness trying to "race" whatever ethnicity when its like....... dude do you not understand.... does the entire argument itself not make you see.... this is all made up and this conversation makes no damn sense bc there isnt actually any sort of biological basis that this shit is based on ,, ,,, race is Largely some bullshit made up for the sake of oppression and youre trying So Hard to shove ppl into it instead of understanding the complexities of the situation...why..... pls stop
#are somalis black or arab? god i wish we could just stop w this also as if there aren't afro arabs as if historically#what we call arabs arent one of the fitst ppls out of africa as if there arent dark skinned arabs w curly hair#as if there isnt MORE diversity between africans than there is with non africans 😭😭 bro black or even african isnt any race theyre the#oldest ppl on earth the amount of genetic variation is insaaaneee#does the endless conversation itself not show this is a social issue not a real biological issue ppl are being shoved into and shoving#themselves into????#are balkan ppl white. are slavs white.#dude what the fuck is the white race. weve been considereded white recently were also not like????#are the kuchi people of aghanistan and india white? asian?#this entire convo is stupid race isnt a thing they are people they are a nomadic ethnic group w a history#STOP#are indigenous americans asians or indigenous??? well they come from asians but again this convo goes in circles bc neither asian or native#american as a Race is an actual thing that Exists#Race is some bullshit made up for oppression and which largely still exists today for oppression Or in the best case scenario to#classify broad groups of ppl together based on looks#but its not a Real Thing with Real Definine Lines and Real Biology which there are Real Answers To

every now and then i will have a thought about the 70s and then spontaneously combust into a thousand fla[gets dragged away by security]
#chicano was originally a slur towards mexican americans but was reclaimed during the 60s-70s during the california strikes#back then students were also mostly just taught about white history (or black if they were lucky) but never their own#so protests and calls to learn their own history was made which also resulted in heavy pride within themselves#you'll also see a lot of indigenous pride when it comes to the chicano movement back in the day#especially if you look at the murals which have a lot of inspiration derived from mexican catholicism and indigenous imagery#(which is a little ironic to me considering mexico doesn't exactly treat their indigenous population well but i digress 🫠🫠)#then we also have chicano park which is also one of the biggest icons of chicano history#it was built back in the 60s but split up a neighorhood-- the government promised to build a park to compensate but eventually the folks li#-ing there found out they were going to turn it into a patrol station instead and protested in 1970#eventually chicano park was built and after it opened a shit ton of murals came up because at the time there was the chicano mural movement#and a muralist proposed letting others paint on the walls since a lot of the structures built happened to be pretty good canvases#this is all kinda basic history and you could easily look most of this up lmao#i just like rambling#anyways thats my time folks security is eyeing me like they're about to ban me okay b[Electric Taser SFX]#pyro screams to the abyss

I don't think about this show at all anymore (they fucked up the beginning of s4 and I dropped it immediately) but god damn the showrunners knew what they were doing by establishing that John has a low pain tolerance and then amputating his leg few seasons over. The girlies were screaming, they were going wild and opening on ao3 in the next tab
#black sails#willing to elaborate what exactly ticked me off but that wasnt important to the post so i didnt do it in the post yk#john silver#ok yeah ill elaborate#did not like that they immediately dropped him in a m/f relationship#nothing against madi i think shes a great character#in fact i think they did her a disservice by making her kiss the mc immediately#but i think there was amato/heteronormativity at play here because we were barely introduced to her#they barely touched hands and bam! now theyre kissing whereas flint and silver had known eachother since ep1#let my boy be single#besides their relationship was just average compared to the visceral hatred of silverflint#again- because they had SO MUCH HISTORY TOGETHER#had madi been there way earlier i wouldve been more fine but that wouldnt have made sense in the story#if i got some info wrong kill me now but in my defense it has been almost a year since i watched it#oh god oh no THAT WAS THE SHOW THAT GOT ME INTO COUNTRY MUSIC i had repressed that#anyway 👍#oh btw lived for anne bonny and whatever her mans name was#like they did it right#that is how you write a compelling m/f relationship

the older i get the more confused i become in regards to my identity.
#z escribe#i have been aware that i was adopted from a young age. heck i knew before my mom told me because i watched the health channel#and i rmbr they showed a skin color chart and i pieced together...two white parents don't equal a brown kid#and i thought that the colorblind mindset was a proper one to be brought up with. obviously not as i experienced racism in elementary.#and was extremely confused why 'other' white kids didn't see me as white either...well no shit you're not white baby aza#and i went through a radical phase during middle school. hating all white people. but then my mom's white fragility deterred me from that#as any time i would voice my anger she would... quite literally in tears... try to reason with me and be like ''but i'm white people...#do you hate me?'' to which i would always have to soothe her. and honestly i have become comfortable in identifying with mixed.#it is a comfortable identity because i have grown up without any specific culture (outside of american. which. how does one even begin to#define the complexities of such an identity... the way that american as a nationality transcends as it becomes a civil religion.)#anyways. i have been thinking about a guy at a party and our conversations. and how we got to our identities and i instantly...#out of habit really. told him ''well i'm half mexican or indigenous too... but i mean it's not like i'm really latin.'' and he was like.#''no azaria. you are. don't diminish yourself and your ancestors just because you weren't able to grow up around that culture''#his comment made me think about my identity once again after a long time of not wondering what it means to be Me.#and i recently submitted a paper for an internship. and god. i was reading it to my white mom. and after i read the concluding paragraph#she asked me to read it again. to which i did. and then after a pause she sighed and said i was being ''too angry''#and when i asked her to elaborate she simply said ''well it makes it sound as if white people are evil''#mind you. my application paper is about working at a museum for african american/black art preservation. like. art history is so deeply#saturated with colonialism and racism??? and she just chose to ignore that point of my paper and focus on me critiquing her fellow white#people. and to categorize me as the 'angry black person' are you Fucking kidding me. but then even with that she was like.#''i just don't get why you're so angry. you're not even black. i mean. you don't look black at all. you look mexican''#she constantly wants my identity to be simple. to be watered down. to be digestible.#i am the product of a biracial mother and fully latin/indigenous father. that is the truth of my identity. i will NEVER be perceived as#white.#but after that i just felt so incredibly shitty and called my sister and she told me what our mom said to her that day too. and i said#something along the lines of ''sometimes i feel as if mom thinks we owe her for adopting us.'' and my sister agreed.#it broke me. it really did. to know that i am not being overdramatic in my thoughts. to know that i am not simply being ungrateful.#my sister says that she copes with it by reasoning that our parents are born in the 40s and times were a lot different then. but it is hard#for me to constantly excuse their racism and ignorance towards my identity. both regarding my queerness and ethnicity.#i am so tired. so so tired.

Got the local 16 year old employee to listen to Muse today. She's one of the most normal ppl who work at the store. Super sweet, but Super sheltered.
I mentioned how my "modern rock" tag on Spotify is like 80% Muse, Des Rocs, and Nothing But Thieves, & she was like "I have heard of None of those". And I told her "you Probably have heard Muse, even if you didn't know it" & mentioned they have a song in Twilight. & she was like "Wait, really????"
So I played Supermassive Black Hole & she looooved it. & she asked for me to play more of Muse, so I did :')
She's still almost painfully normal overall, but I can at least help spread some new music tastes to her
#speculation nation#she asked if my rock playlist i was playing is a public playlist (aka could she listen to it herself)#and i was just like. sorry im literally just shuffling my spotify likes by music genre :(#& she was like 'oh okay. well ill try listening to more muse and des rocs' bc she liked some of the des rocs that played too#she asked what made smth Rock music & i mentioned it being rowdy and generally fun music (at least to me)#though also generally politically progressive. especially punk rock music#ive gotten in a few conversations with her about these kinds of things. like the treatment of muslim people by the french government#& she brought up how black people are treated there too (she's black so Definitely smth understandable for her to care about)#and today we were talking about classes & got on the topic of history and how we both haaaate history classes#but i mentioned it's important for us to know history anyways so we can try to avoid repeating mistakes in history#& mentioned bullshit like holocaust deniers. so we had a convo about antisemitism & how bullshit it is#idk she may be a normie but i do enjoy talking to her. not everything has to be about nerd interests all the time.#honestly i like being a positive adult figure in a handful of teens' lives.#i may not be perfect but i hope i can impart little nuggets of wisdom to them from time to time.
