Saying that the gpda should go care about something important, as if they aren't - for the first time in DECADES - taking a definite stand against the sports governing body publicly for all to see, is something.
This goes beyond the jewellery, the underwear, or even the swearing. And their issue about being told not to wear jewellery and bring told what underwear is more about the fact that they were told by the media, rather than by the governing bodies themselves directly in a meeting where the drivers could share their perspectives.
They publicly called out the FIA President for his hypocrisy and for how he has spoken about the drivers both to their face and behind their backs.
Most importantly, they have publicly expressed their feelings about monetary fines, publicly stated that they have no idea what the FIA does with the money they receive from fining drivers, and called them out for it. There is zero transparency from the FIA in an issue we now know has been raised since at least 2021. What is the FIA hiding? Because there is no reason why the drivers should not be allowed to see where that money goes, or at least no legitimate reason.

add charles swearing on purpose in a press conference to test out whether max's punishment was a one time thing to the list of things that i would click off a lestappen fic for for being too unrealistic!
Unfortunately to reality check everyone for a second as fun as it is to sensationalise for rpf purposes I don't think Charles swore in that press conference on purpose and I think his whole "oh noooo I'm going to have to do community service with Max" smile act was more a result of an inside joke between the drivers (since he said it in the direction of Carlos and Lando) who all already thought a swearing penalty was ridiculous.
The statement specifically mentions monetary fines, which confirms to me that Charles' penalty was the catalyst for the GPDA to act but I'm sure all drivers had input and Max and Charles probably had the most since they're the two who have been penalised for swearing and were amongst the first two drivers to follow the GPDA instagram.

i just don’t think a media ecosystem in which traditional media consists effectively of the monday sports section of newspapers or websites that produce what i hope* is ai-authored clickbait, and in which social media is purely team-authored bts/thirst content and what the fuck ever fan response drivel the comments section can produce, and in which still somehow every spare minute these guys have is spent doing ‘media,’ is very healthy for anyone. never mind for a sport in which the drivers have rapidly been commodified and hardly know how to respond besides having an ineffective union and very occasionally a personal youtube channel

Q: (Jenna Fryer – Associated Press) George, were you guys blindsided by this or have any idea that it was coming or under consideration, that a change in Race Director was coming? GR: No, no idea whatsoever. So, yeah, as I said, it was a bit of a bit of surprise.
Q: (Luke Smith – The Athletic) George, has there been any response from the FIA or the FIA president to what the GPDA put out? GR: No. Not at the moment, which I'm a little bit surprised about, to be fair. But maybe there'll be something to come. Who knows?
Q: (Ben Hunt – Autosport) It's obviously very disappointing to learn from you that there's no transparency at all from the FIA. Was there any response about where the money's going from for all these fines and all that sort of stuff? Because that's another key element which we would quite like to know as well. GR: No, I think ultimately for us, when we were hearing from the FIA a couple of years ago, when it came to the Presidential elections, they were talking about transparency, talking about where the money is going to be reinvested into grassroots racing, which we're all in favour for. And of course, when it comes to some of these large fines, there's a number of drivers on the grid who can comfortably afford these fines. There's maybe some rookies on the grid that if they're handed a $1 million fine, you know, they can't afford this. But if we know where that's being sort of reinvested and if it's going into grassroots or into some training programs, then we get it. As I said, I think we just want the transparency and understanding of what was promised from the beginning.
Q: (Kevin Scheuren – Motorsport-total.com) A question to George as well on that topic. Isn't it a bad sign that you need to open up a social media account to make your voices heard as a collective? Because it sometimes seems, looking from the outside, that the individual, if the individual has an opinion on stuff, he faces repercussions. Now you have to work as a collective. Are you more or less a pawn in this game? Do you drivers feel sometimes more or less as a pawn in this game, not taken serious? GR: I think we've probably learned from the past that whenever we have spoken up, let's say internally, it hasn't gone anywhere. And as I said, as drivers, we only want the best for the sport. We want to improve it, especially on safety grounds, but whenever it comes to, you know, decisions in the race, we only want to help. And it's been a couple of years now that not much has changed when we have sort of given some views forward. And I guess we all wanted to show that we are collectively united. And maybe that will show how seriously we feel as a whole on the subject.
Q: (Andrew Benson – BBC Sport) George, it's been seven years since the GPDA had put out a public statement of this kind about something they were concerned about. What level of confidence do the drivers have in the leadership of the FIA at the moment? GR: I mean, I'm not too sure to be honest. We recognise everybody's working as hard as they can to do the best job possible. There is obviously a huge amount of change within the FIA quite regularly, so it's clearly not the most stable of places. And maybe that's why it's been a bit challenging to get some of the changes that we've wanted implemented. Of course, everyone has their own side to their own story. But as I said, I think if we feel that we're being listened to and some of the changes that we are experiencing, requesting, are implemented, because ultimately we're only doing it for the benefit of the sport, then maybe our confidence will increase. But yeah, I think there's a number of drivers who feel probably a bit fed up with the whole situation. And it only seems to be going in, to a degree, the wrong direction.
Q: (Jordan Bianchi – The Athletic) For all three drivers: you returned to Vegas this year. A year ago, there was a lot of hype and excitement about this race. I'm curious, now that you come back here for a second time, what's the atmosphere like that you guys have kind of experienced so far? Kevin, let's start with you.
GR: Yeah, I mean, it definitely feels strange, this Grand Prix, just living in the night. And like Kevin says, the atmosphere builds up during the course of the weekend. So, yeah, let's see how it goes.
Q: (Anna Cordera – Momentum Racing) George, I'd like to ask you, you've been racing with Lewis for almost three years. What do you think is going to be different now you being the veteran of the team racing with Kimi, regarding the development of the car? GR: Yeah, I mean, ultimately, for most F1 teams, you have near on 1,000 people who are working towards building these two cars, yet you only have two drivers driving it. So, I think, let's say, in Lewis, in my case, it was never that Lewis had a stronger voice. The team listened to us both equally because both of our opinions were extremely important. And the same going into next year. You know, Kimi's new. He's fresh. And I'm sure he's going to have a lot of great ideas to bring to the table. So, you know, I am the more experienced of the two, but we will both get equal voices the same way, and we will both equally contribute towards the development the same way as it was with Lewis and I.
Q: (Ian Parkes – New York Times) Sorry, another question to you, George. George, is it that difficult to try and get a sit-down face-to-face meeting with the President of the FIA to discuss all these issues, that you have to go down the route that you did with that message? GR: It's definitely not difficult to get a sit down, but I think getting things to change or getting promises upheld seems slightly more challenging. So, it's maybe the FIA or the president didn't recognise how seriously we all felt. So I think that's why over the course of 20 races this year and also even last year we spoke about a number of topics, all of the drivers, we all feel pretty similar. We all know what we want from the sport and the direction it's been heading and we probably feel that we want to do a small U-turn on a number of topics and just want to work together with the FIA on this. And that's just what we've felt has not been happening at all, at least directly from the President.

I'm having thoughts about the race again so bear with me.
As much as I'm happy happy for Max and the alpines, this is a race that legitimately just should not have happened. We had 5 crashes that caused red flags in a single quali, with so many more yellows from near misses. We had a driver spin off in the formation lap, I don't care how bad you think Lance Stroll is, a driver doesn't just spin on a Formation Lap like that unless the conditions are dangerous. We had multiple drivers saying that the track was not safe including a heartbreaking radio where Ollie Bearman tells his engineer to talk to the FIA because he is just trying not to die at this point. And that is Before Franco Colapinto crashed causing the 6th red flag in a day. Not to mention all of the unsafe stewarding decisions made like calling red flags and safety cars too late all weekend.
I don't care if it made entertaining racing to some people, drivers have died in wet races like this and I watched the race terrified we could see another. We are so so lucky that none of the crashes were worse.
I am not shocked but am incredibly disappointed that people are focusing on the swing in the championship and Lando's media comments and not the dangerous position every single driver was put in on Sunday.
I think the GPDA can argue with the FIA over swearing all they want, because lets face it, the swearing thing is stupid, but they should also be fighting for safer conditions to drive in because races like this and like Qatar last year show that the FIA currently has little regard for when track and weather conditions threaten driver safety.

How the GPDA statement got written*
*(in my head)
[LANDO and ALEX are late to the meeting. The ROOKIES were all five minutes early, except for FRANCO, who was caught up in a mob of Argentinian fans on the way to the conference room.]
MAX: We of course need to address the swearing. [CHARLES nods insistently in the back, standing with his cancelled wife.]
[GEORGE has already written out a paragraph about swearing but decides the whole statement needs more "indeeds" for emphasis.]
ALEX: Didn't they say in English class that we should add, like, metaphors if we want to get a point across?
[Everyone looks at each other. None of them paid much attention in English class.]
CARLOS: What about gladiators, no? Very dramatic.
GEORGE: Love it. [Furious typing.]
LEWIS: What Ben Sulayem said in the media about us "not being rappers" was not cool, man. Let's add something about that.
SEB: Don't forget the stuff with the jewelry and the underwear!
GEORGE: Ah, that old chestnut. [More furious typing. Also like thirty more commas.]
LANDO: And that fine I got for running across the track!
[GEORGE thinks LANDO deserved the fine but adds some stuff about fines anyway, in the spirit of union representation. OSCAR, as one of the few non high school dropouts, notices the rampant misuse of commas but decides it's not worth raising a fuss about.]
FERNANDO [looks up from scrolling through Tiktok on his phone]: I do not know how to use this Google Docs, so I have hand written this paragraph about anti-Spanish bias in the FIA that I would like you to add to our statement.
[FERNANDO hands GEORGE a hotel napkin with incomprehensible scribbling on it, then resumes scrolling Tiktok. LEWIS breaks the fourth wall and makes direct eye contact with the viewer, like Jim from The Office.]
GEORGE [with a pained smile]: Ah, thank you Fernando. [He pockets the napkin and resolves to throw it away after the meeting.]

I know everyone is mostly joking with the whole ‘oh the GPDA should strike’ thing after their statement in instagram, but I really think we should be having a conversation about how actually, they can’t strike, and that lack of ability to use collective bargaining can be and may be incredibly dangerous.
The issue with the GPDA as a union is that it only covers the twenty current Formula 1 drivers. Now, many people see no issue with this - why would anyone else need coverage? - but this is what sort of hamstrings the GPDA as a union. Should the members go on strike, there would be backlash in the press, pressure on the FIA, FOM, Liberty and the teams - but there are other drivers, who have the super licences needed to drive an F1 car. And could you even blame them? We’ve seen how hard it can be for rookies to get a seat - Colapinto looks a lot like he may be able to get on the grid, either for next year or the year after, and that is a swansong MIRACLE that came out of nowhere for him. Lawson and Piastri had to wait on the sidelines, as did Doohan. The only Driver’s Academies that seem to be working are Ferrari’s (A Leclerc off to WEC, Bearman in Haas), Mercedes’ to an extent (They tossed Aron aside when he’s been doing fantastically, but Antonelli has a seat) and sort of Mclaren’s (Bortoleto was under them in F2, but he has now severed ties to sign for Audi.). And even then they CLEARLY have their failures. Can you truly blame young drivers for taking any and every opportunity handed to them when so few succeed at all?
A strike would be very easily defeated by the FIA and Co - and there would be no guarantee of contracts post strike, and although the WDCs and highest level drivers could probably weather the storm, there is no way the rookies and those from smaller teams would be able to, and they could likely lose their seats over it. Quite frankly, the only way for a strike to work in the drivers favour in this day and age would be for them to vote to include all drivers who have superlicences in the union, and then for all of them to strike together.
A reminder: every driver who has an official contract with a team entered into the F1 championship can apply for a superlicence, if they hold the other requirements (usually a certain number of points plus a driver’s licence pluse a competition licence plus a theory test on first sitting), which means drivers from IndyCar, WEC, lower formulas, Formula E and test drivers are all usually eligible, or can be. I think the official number is around 70ish drivers are eligible, plus any retired F1 drivers who keep up the fitness standard and 100km of practise across a year - so drivers such as Jacques Villneauve could potentially still have a valid superlicence, so long as he proved he did enough practise.
Aside from the sheer unlikelihood of the GPDA being allowed to vote to include all holders of valid superlicences - which could possibly lead to the core members facing severe consequences, possibly the same as striking on their own - there are a lot of drivers who would not strike for safety precautions, purely they don’t think they are necessary (Brundle on the halo) or because they know if they broke the line they could get a drive, and because the GPDA has so little political power it very rarely is able to intercede to set minimum wages etc the way other unions are able to, any drivers breaking the line would know they weren’t losing out on anything but a moral argument, and potential safety issues. Some people don’t think about safety until they need it.
The current state of affairs is just incredibly concerning, and I think that although it’s fun and fine to make jokes about it, we should definitely remember both the driver’s own lack of agency, and that even though some aren’t satisfied with the statement they put out, it is perhaps one of the only things they can do.

A lot of you guys aren't seeing the bigger picture of what's happening with F1 and the gpda. This isn't just about swearing, it's also about literally everything that happened in Brazil. This is literally a warning to the FIA. The FIA and sport in general will be fucked if these guys go on strike and aren't bringing in big sponsor money for them. These drivers are human beings who have every right to unionise if they please.
We saw what happened in Qatar last year. They will literally tell Ben and his groupies to get fucked if these drivers are subjected to conditions that could kill them.

GPDA Statement regarding "Driver Misconduct" As is the case with every sport, competitors must abide by the referee's decision, whether they like it or not, indeed whether they agree with it or not. That is how sport works. The Drivers (our members) are no different, and fully understand that. Our members are professional drivers, racing in Formula 1, the pinnacle of international motorsport. They are the gladiators and every racing weekend they put on a great show for the fans. With regards to swearing, there is a difference between swearing intended to insult others and more casual swearing, such as you might use to describe bad weather, or indeed an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation. We urge the FIA President to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise. Further, our members are adults, they do not need to be given instructions via the media, about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewellery and underpants. The GPDA has, on countless occasions, expressed its view that Driver monetary fines are not appropriate for our Sport. For the past 3 years, we have called upon the FIA President to share the details and strategy regarding how the FIA's financial fines are allocated and where the funds are spent. We have also relayed our concerns about the negative image financial fines bring to the Sport. We once again request that the FIA President provides financial transparency and direct, open dialogue with us. All stakeholders (FIA, F1, the Teams and the GPDA) should jointly determine how and where the money is spent for the benefit of our Sport. The GPDA wishes to collaborate in a constructive way with all the stakeholders, including the FIA President, in order to promote our great Sport for the benefit of everyone who works in it, pays for it, watches it, and indeed loves it.
