It sounds like a bit but I unironically find it very uncanny that you can see the culture war take a sharp turn around 2008 (financial crisis, well into The War On Terror) by looking at FPS games and seeing how both consumer demand and industry practices pivoted hard and quickly from (a VERY entrenched tradition of) almost exclusively ww2 games to Modern Warfare games. Something about the "acceptable faceless targets to be gunned down" switching from Nazis to brown men and/or Strange Aliens in sci-fi games.... If you want to pinpoint the moment the culture war started to swing towards "lost" you can find it there and we don't talk about it BC it's obvious but it really is worth remembering once in a while.

Passed through the park outside my school where I spent most of my childhood and noticed the art we made for the council to put on the toilet building had faded, and the back of the basketball hoops I remember them freshly installing were grimy, and the New Playground (we went to the opening day and fought for a spot on the merry-go-round because The Old Playground never had one) was off-coloured from years of dirt and rough play, and the grass was all dead from this terrible drought, and the Old Playground doesn't exist anymore and the Green Space they built in its place is overgrown now, and the skateboard ramps have been taken down, and it goes on and on and on and on and on and I can't stand here forever watching it go, can I?

This is why I fuck with "graves is adlers son" but almost no other "Adler has kids" idea because this man is Not a father. Graves works because the different last name already implies Adler is such an absent father his kid doesn't even have his last name. All the others are like "oh he has kids as part of his marriage" absolutely NOT and that marriage lasted like 6 months anyway. Adler knocked up a random woman because "condoms make him feel weird", ruined her life by making her an unwed single mother in America in the 80s, and refused to acknowledge his bastard son. Graves doesn't even know what this man looks like. He walked past a fancy portrait of Russell Adler while he was visiting Shepard at Langley and went "huh. Ugly looking guy. Wonder who he is." He's probably got half siblings out there too.
