I found a great idea from one of my all-time favorite bands. Ten questions and answers about my live concert experiences. I had posted them on my sister site @ourladyofomega, but this is the remix. I took the time to explain each one in full.
Dollar values double with each one.
First concert: Dream Theater + Big Wreck @ Vanderbilt Planetarium. A former “friend” became the lucky winner of a radio-station giveaway. The prize? 16 free tickets to this show. We ended up with balcony seats and my “friend” invited our former co-worker from the department store we used to work at.
Last concert: Cold Waves XI (Lana Del Rabies + Ash Code + Sierra + JK Flesh + Orphx + Front Line Assembly w. Skold) @ Le Poisson Rouge. Part of the Triple Crown Victory Weekend that consisted of meeting my Italian-Irish family at a cousin’s engagement party (Friday), and getting an amazing cakeday gift box from a Welsh girl in Detroit (Saturday). This was a (Sunday) show that I waited at the last-minute to purchase tickets and wound up going. Who in the fuck’s idea was it to not have a NYC Cold Waves this year?
Worst concert: none. I make sure all shows I go to are ones to remember. But, if you ask me about the worst band I saw, then Hemlock takes that title. They opened with Meshuggah and Ministry (headliners). Everyone in Irving Plaza just stood there silent seeing this outdated nu-metal band trying to get it going. They were still unknowns after being fifteen years of band, and looks like no one remembers them after that. Good.
Loudest concert: Dream Theater + Big Wreck. Did I say this was my first-ever concert? I had no idea how loud it was going to be. Without question, this one was deafening. I’m not sugarcoating it. I had to cover my ears the entire time up in the balcony seats because all I heard was this shrieking wall of white noise. I remember almost nothing of that night other than the fact that I was there.
Best concert: Hospital Productions' 20th (Godflesh + Prurient + Orphx + etc.) @ Warsaw. This was at a time when I started taking the NYC scene seriously. I just got out of nine months of stay-at-home post-surgery recovery, and I had a new clarity coming out of it. Hospital Productions 20th marked an important point in my life: it made me decide that this was the place and people I wanted to be associated with. I also got to see some amazing artists: Dominick Fernow / Prurient, Orphx, Dedekind Cut, Nothing, and Godflesh. Three of those artists I’ve already seen twice in one point in life and another.
Seen the most: Uniform (3) @ Output, Saint Vitus, and Knockout Center. There was a bill with Uniform opening, then Pharmakon, Prurient, Aaron Dilloway with Genesis P. Orridge, and Merzbow. The line to get in Output was pretty long that I missed half of Uniform’s set and didn’t know who they were until I got more into them. I finally redeemed myself to see them in their entirety at Saint Vitus with a lineup of Michael Berdan, Ben Greenberg, touring drummer Michael Blume, and bassist Jenna Rose of Anatomy. Redemption fulfilled. The third? At Sacred Bones 15th. They were an added bonus right after Jim Jarmusch / Squrl, so why not?
Most surprising: Sacred Bones 15th @ Knockout Center. I have dreams where I end up in so many weird places that could have existed but didn’t. They are no different from the places I experienced. Downstairs record stores, schools, quiet snowy roads, city streets and highways. It’s an alternate reality that’s slightly shifted within itself. I entered Queens’ Knockout Center for Sacred Bones’ 15th where Constant Smiles started the evening so quietly. I was blown away by the first moments of it. People were standing and sitting on the floor in silence during the set. The sinking sun’s rays blasted through the venue’s windows giving light to the current space, as if this show started in the wee hours of the day. This was surreal! It wasn’t anything like I ever experienced before. But that’s not all. What other show I went to had a lecture hall on the line-up ? LD Deutsch’s essay about time, which had everyone sit in classroom setting. I said to myself: “these weird things are happening that normally aren’t. Am I dreaming, or am I in a dream?!” I look back and it was an amazing experience. Nothing like it ever since.
Happy I got to see: Skinny Puppy + Lead Into Gold @ Irving Plaza. No other show I went to had the biggest one-day payoff. You will all kill me when I say this, but I once told myself that it was no big deal if I never got to see Skinny Puppy. WRONG. They announced a farewell tour, and I asked myself how big of a deal that was. I quickly reconsidered. I got my tickets the minute they went up for sale. So what did $150.00 buy me? An unforgettable experience; that’s what. Meeting up with five Tumblr mutuals to see Lead Into Gold and one of Skinny Puppy’s final legendary shows. We had pizza nights, walks around Manhattan, car rides to club night for an amazing after-party, and just shilling around absorbing an experience that’s very rare to have. And, as a special bonus, meeting Ministry's Paul Barker and buying merch- from him. I still can’t believe it. It’s very rare to have Perfect 10-days in my life. This was indeed one of them.
Wish I could have seen: none. I have seen all my desired bands on my list. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Killing Joke, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Front Line Assembly. That leaves KMFDM the only one left on my bucket list. I’ve seen other artists I wanted to with little or no effort. Those were Indecision, Unsane, Bauhaus, Linkin Park, Cold Cave, Snoop Dogg, Boy Harsher, Atari Teenage Riot, Pharmakon, Prurient, Merzbow, Black Marble, Nas…I could go further if you want me to. I have all day.
Next concert: I’m still on the fence to go see KEN Mode + Hide @ TV Eye and / or Balvanera @ Synthicide. I may not go, because I decided not to do anything by myself again after seeing both of last year’s shows with mutuals. But, we shall see. Wanna' play? Be my guest.

Her Song part 30
FIVE YEARS AGO - ATLANTA, GEORGIA
"Y/N, meet your daughter. Congratulations on a healthy baby girl," the nurse said, handing me the screaming 'bundle of joy' who seemed more like a bundle of chaos than anything. Her face was bright red and a small tuft of thin hair stood up straight on the top of her tiny head.
"Hey, baby," I laughed. "I'm your momma. I can't believe I'm finally meeting you. This won't be easy, but we're gonna get through it just fine, okay? I promise."
I gently kissed her forehead, hot tears falling down my face, heavy with emotion.
After cleaning her up, the nurses left me alone with my newborn daughter. She had finally stopped crying, looking up at me with wide, innocent eyes. She held gently onto my finger as I rocked her to sleep in my arms for the first time.
A nurse came in and we filled out the birth certificate. Sydney Fleur Y/L/N.
When I was told I had a visitor, I had no idea who it would be. I had hoped it would be my parents or a family member coming to forgive me. I was wrong.
My breath caught in my throat when he walked in the room. He smiled a sweet smile that had the nurse convinced he was a good man. He wasn't, and he never will be. "Could you give us a minute?" he asked kindly. The nurse nodded with a smile and left the room. I couldn't find my voice to ask her to stay.
"Long time no see, Y/N," he said, sitting in a chair next to the hospital bed. I clutched my baby closer to my chest. "What? Not even gonna say hi?"
"What the hell are you doing here?" I finally croaked out.
"Well, I came here to see my niece, obviously," he said smugly, knowing damn well what he did.
"She's not your niece," I snapped bitterly.
"Oh really? Because last time I checked, my brother is the one who got you knocked up."
"Get out," I cried.
"No. No, I don't think I will. You know, I haven't stopped thinking about you. The way you looked when he held you down. The way you screamed. The way you begged me for help. So stupid. So naïve. I have to see it again. I have to have you for myself. It was stupid to make Mark do it. I should've taken the prize for myself."
"Leave, now."
"Sweetheart, it's cute that you think you have any control over me. Your parents don't believe you. The cops don't believe you. The whole damn town knows what a slut you are. It's a good thing you're pretty, 'cause there's nothing in that head of yours."
"Look, Ben, you have five seconds to get out or I'm calling security to drag you out."
"Oh yeah? Is that what you're gonna do? Newsflash, Y/N: I'm five years older than you, way stronger, and closer to the phone. So threaten me all you want, but you can't do shit, and we both know it," Ben sneered.
I cried, my shoulders slumping more. "Why'd you make Mark do it? Why make your own brother..."
He seemed to think it over before laughing shortly, sharply. "Because I wanted to. And because I could."
"You had your fun. Just leave me and my kid alone. What the hell do you even want from me?"
He smirked. It looked kind at first glance, but his eyes were menacing, and I knew better by then. "I want you. I want to feel you the way Mark did. I want you to be mine, the way you should've been from the start."
"You're delusional," I laughed humorlessly. I swung my hand backward and pressed the code blue button on the wall.
"You bitch," he spat as people began rushing toward the room. "I will find you again, Y/N. You can't run forever."
And those were his last words to me.
Until five years later.
PRESENT DAY - NEW YORK CITY
I've never told anybody exactly what happened that night at that stupid party. Or that day at the hospital when Syd was born. Not even Ash. I always figured it would be something I'd take to the grave. There's no point in going to the cops; they won't do anything until he kills me. But now...now I think maybe I should have told someone. Changed my name. Done anything to hide better.
He found me.
He found me, and there's not a damn thing I can do.
It's been so long. So long that I thought we were safe. I guess not. Maybe he's just dumber than I thought so it took him five years to find me. Or maybe he was just waiting until I was truly happy, just so he could take it all away from me.
I check that all the windows are shut and the door is locked, then pull all the curtains closed tight. I quietly spin a chair in the living room to face the apartment door. I'd feel more comfortable if I had my gun, but I got rid of it after I quit my job at the club. I had a kid to think about and wasn't in imminent danger because of my job anymore, so I got rid of it. I regret that now.
He can get to me. He can hurt me, he can kill me, he can do whatever he wants to me. But he's not getting to my kid. He will never have the chance to hurt my family. Syd, Florence, and Ash will be safe. Even if I have to die protecting them.
~
When I met you I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around Turned you into someone new Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet Success has been so easy for you But don't forget, it's me who put you where you are now and I can put you back down too Don't, don't you want me? You know I can't believe it When I hear that you won't see me Don't, don't you want me? You know I can't believe it When you say that you don't need me It's much too late to find You think you've changed your mind You'd better change it back Or we will both be sorry

#3: “I've done more for the entire comic book industry than anyone in 30 years!”
While he's not exactly as famous as Stan Lee or Jack Kirby, Mark Millar is a well known name in the comic book community. He's worked for both DC and Marvel, as well as some third party companies. He's written iconic stories that have taken the superhero genre and comic book medium to a darker level with stories like Civil War, Old Man Logan, and Superman: Red Son (their quality may vary, but the problems they had were buffed out when they were given film adaptations). He's also the creator of several original characters like the Secret Service and Kick-Ass. Then again, he was also behind Trouble (and a lot of other bad comics), but nobody's perfect.
Whether you like him or not, this is a man who's been writing for comic books since he was in high school, so it's safe to say, he knows a lot about the medium. But Astruc just has to be the one to say he knows more when Millar proposed the idea that all unique superpowers may have been thought of.
Yes. He really had the gall to say that his show is that groundbreaking to an experienced comic book writer.
Now, we could debate what kind of superpower or creative idea could be seen as “unique” or “original” for hours, but that's not the point I am trying to make. But I have an idea on how to rebut this argument. Astruc claims that his show has created more unique superpowers than the entire comic book industry in the past three decades? I'm going to show how the superpowers aren’t as original as he thinks they are by listing off examples from the past two decades.
Ladybug's Lucky Charm – The Tornado of Creation from Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu (2011), the result of the Ninja combing their powers, which uses the area around it to create a new object or weapon to take down whatever threat they face (like turning random debris or rubble to create a giant slingshot. Yes, that really happened).
Cat Noir's Cataclysm – Kitazaki/Dragon Orphnoch Kamen Rider 555 (2003) has the power to turn anything he touches into ash.
Rena Rouge's Mirage – Neopolitan and Emerald's Semblances from RWBY (First used in 2014 and 2015 respectively). Neopolitan can use her Semblance to create illusions that shatter like glass when touched, while Emerald can induce hallucinations for a single person at a time.
Carapace's Shelter – Steven Universe (2013) can use his shield or bubble to defend himself and others against enemies.
Queen Bee's Venom – Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender (2006) uses chi-blocking attacks to paralyze her opponents, as well as prevent them from using their bending powers.
Viperion's Second Chance – Tracer from Overwatch (2016) can use her Recall to briefly jump back in time, reloading her weapons and healing any injuries she has.
Pegasus' Voyage – Cisco Ramon/Vibe from The Flash (first used in 2016, though the comic version first appeared in 2011) can create small portals called “breaches” to travel through.
Ryuko's Wind, Water and Lightning Dragon – Laxus and Juvia from Fairy Tail (both first showed their powers around 2010 in the anime) can transform into electricity and water respectively.
Bunnyx's Burrow – Professor Paradox from Ben 10: Alien Force (2008) has the ability to travel through time and create portals to other dimensions.
King Monkey's Uproar – Cicada, a villain from The Flash TV series (first appeared in 2018, with powers that differ from his comic book debut in 2001) has a dagger with the power to nullify the powers of other Metahumans.
Multimouse's Multitude – Slapback from the Ben 10 reboot (first appeared in February 2019, eight months before the debut of Multimouse) has the power to duplicate himself, with the clones becoming smaller and more dense in the process.
Hawkmoth's Akumatization – The Sorcerer from Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja (2012) uses his “stank” to transform innocent people into monsters. In addition, he usually uses it on people who are feeling negative emotions (and unlike Hawkmoth, he has Tim Curry voicing him)
Mayura's Amokization – Daiki Kaito/Kamen Rider Diend from Kamen Rider Decade (2009) has the power to summon other Kamen Riders to fight for him.
Hell, I can keep this up with every akumatized villain too, but then this post would take forever to finish.
The point I'm making is that except for Miracolonizer's Liberation (the power to free someone from any restrictions to let them reach their full potential, only it's used by a villain to erase any morals the victim has that keep them in line instead, basically driving them crazy), basically every power seen in Miraculous Ladybug has been used before.
The problem isn't that the powers featured aren't original. What makes a certain superhero or superpower interesting is the way it is used. The Black Canary from Arrow had a sonic device that allowed her to emit her trademark sonic scream instead of it being a natural superpower. Does that mean that Marc Guggenheim invented that power?
Of course it doesn't. So why would Astruc think just because he placed an interesting spin on some preexisting superpowers, that means he “invented more unique superpowers than the entire industry”? That is an incredibly egotistical way to think for a show that's only been on the air for three seasons. And I think it's pretty clear this show isn't exactly Avatar.
But if you really want to watch something with “unique” superpowers, watch Ultimate Muscle. A character in that show has the power to literally transform into a giant shoe. Yeah.

- Reap the Stars for abbytheatre08
The prompt: After Ben's death, Rey goes mad and turns to the dark side. Only Ben's not dead anymore. ----------------------- She is consuming fire, magnificent in her rage. She will burn the galaxy to its foundations, until the ashes rain down and pile high as mountains. She will gather them into bouquets and scatter them like petals upon his grave.
He will be remembered, and they will not.
Call him The Light Bearer and Joy Giver. Call him He Who Loved and Laid Down His Life. Call him Ben.
- we are question marks that hang above the endless unexplained for AlwaysEverlark
The first time she walked into his club, she was looking for a job. Kylo took one look at her—the stubborn pout of her lip, the determined glint in her eyes, the ruddy glow of her face where the sun had kissed it—and swallowed a lump in his throat that was shaped like the words you’re too good for this place.
They needed a singer. Kira Johnson could hold a tune, knew the old standards, and had a knockout pair of tits to boot. A few slinky ballgowns and a touch of lipstick, and she’d more than do the trick of distracting suckers long enough to part them from their money.
The club solely needed to break even; anything they made on top of the Syndicate’s cut was gravy, and Kylo Ren had been lining his pockets with his own take for long enough that he could see Kira for the lump of clay that she was: rough-hewn, misshapen, but soft and supple and sure to curve under his touch.
- Eighty Bucks Says Sweetheart for Amoreusou
Ben likes puzzles. Rey needs help with a bunch of them. Good thing it's a slow day at the office.
- Seldom Visions for Andrina_Nightshade
After visiting an old Sith temple, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has fallen into a deep sleep when he pricks his finger on the point of a red crystal. Rey become is the first to find him, but his rescuer isn't just any general or pilot, it's the woman he shares a soul with, who haunts his waking hours, who still sees him even in his sleep.
- The Dyad for aneighthdomain
Based of the Prompt: Groundhog Day scenario. Ben and Rey keep getting sent back to the first time they met and no matter what they do, Ben always dies so they stop trying to change events and just live a life time in the year between and couple of weeks and run away together.
- Saudade: The Love That Remains for AnneAnna
- The Delegation for aNerdObsessed
A humanitarian delegation from Naboo arrives at Niima Outpost. Rey is skeptical, to say the least.
- i don't want you like a best friend for anopendoor
It’s not like she hadn’t seen this coming—Rose told her weeks ago that he was invited. It was an inevitability Rey was always going to have to face, she just didn’t think that Rose would be so merciful as to also give every guest a plus one.
But Rey can’t really be upset—and she is totally, unequivocally not upset—that Ben's bringing someone because, well.
She is, too.
- Love is Weakness for bittersnake
“He’s someone I found on my recent trip to Corellia,” Rey replies placidly, her face practiced in its boredom. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
“Love is weakness,” her grandfather reminds her, the way he has for years. It’s why he doesn’t love her. He will not be weak. It’s why she doesn’t love him, either.
- in sickness and in health (with health being less likely) for BlueButterflyKisses
Deciding to spend the rest of their lives together is the easy part for both Rey and Ben; the trouble is in how to propose.
- Snowed In for Blueyedgurl
Never in her wildest dreams did Rey Johnson think she would ever get to meet her favorite other Kylo Ren. She also would have never entertained the idea of the scenario she found herself in. How did a hike in the woods lead to a snowstorm and taking shelter in a remote cabin in the woods? The idea was so ridiculous but had become reality. Stuck inside with a handsome stranger surrounded by a winter storm, Rey wonders what will happen with no power and only one bed. Will they be polite co-habitants stuck in a strange set of circumstances or is there room for something more?
- Curses, Comforts and Capybaras for Bombastique
Arrogant CEO bites off more than he can chew when he angers a witch... And suddenly finds himself transformed into a capybara. Can kindhearted wildlife rehabber Rey Niima help him break the curse?
- To Heal a Broken Soul for Cat2000
Ben survives the fallout of Exegol, but his connection to the physical world is in danger. Rey tends to him as she searched for a way to heal him.
- holding me like water in your hands for Ceallaigh
After Hux finds out Ben killed Snoke, Hux encases Ben in Carbonite. Rey refuses to let Ben stay frozen forever so she mounts a rescue.
- Like a Thief in the Night for chagrins
Their bond won't let them be alone. At least this time it's the middle of the night and they can't get into a shouting match.
- The Chance for Crysania
When Rey and Ben, long time co-workers who have never been able to admit their feelings to each other, go on a weekend retreat to work on a movie adaptation script together, a Nor’easter leaves them snowed in. On Valentine’s Day.
- Awake for cuddlesome
Something inside him is awake, and something inside her is about to wake up.
An alternate interrogation scene.
- darkness rises, and light to meet it for czechia
After the throne room, Jedi Ben Solo and Kira Ren meet again a year later.
- Not Quite a Fairytale for DarkMage13
Rey lets a stranger use the phone of the café she works at late one night. It changes the whole course of her life.
- You Won't Escape Me ('Cause I Set You Free) for DoorKeeper9
- The Canvas of Your Skin for darlingreadsalot
She was incapable of touching him without drawing blood, it seemed. Lines like vermillion paint streaked where her fingers sketched down the contours of his face, his back, and now his chest.
In which a Force bond is splintered, a resurrection goes wrong, a kiss is forgotten, and two almost-lovers avoid speaking for the better half of a year.
- Fleeing the Storm for driverfever
As the granddaughter of an merciless aristocrat, Rey’s life hangs on a thread at the hands of the French Revolutionaries. When her childhood friend, Ben, offers to platonically marry her in order to take her to his home in England to safety, she has no choice but to accept.
But her suitor and revolutionary Hux won’t give her up so easily. Hounded by revolutionaries and falling in love, Rey and Ben must use all their wits to flee Paris and make it to England.
- Equal Measure for dustoftheancients
When Princess Rey of Coruscant calls upon the cursed Sir Kylo Ren to help her escape her grandfather the emperor’s political machinations, she discovers freedom in the ancient familial magic that binds them together.
- Benimina Solo's Late On-Set Force Ability for Evangel10n
Benimina Solo has never, not even once, had an ounce of Force Sensitivity. She's done a great deal to move on with her life after failing out of her uncle's Jedi training school. So when Rey Palpatine comes into her life and suddenly everything changes, she's not a happy camper.

Kaydel pressed her lips together in a thin line, passing a pile of datapads over the desk. “I don’t know what that pretentious nerf herder has put into your brain, but these are tales of the key roles women have played in past rebellions.” She stood, tapping the pile. “They’re great reads,” she added, with a pointed raise of her eyebrow.
- and they danced across the sky for flipflop_diva
When he was still a child, he constantly watched the blue butterflies as they danced in the sky.
They seemed to be calling him, aiding him each instance that icy-cold darkness flowed through his very veins. The magnificent creatures saved him from the voices. They drowned out the incessant chatter in his head. Temporarily cleared away all the anger. During those brief respites, watching those blue wings flutter in the sky, Ben felt free.
But that’s another life. Another world. Another time. Another, another, another.
And Kylo's no longer a child.
No. He welcomes the darkness now. Embraces it.

Finn, for fuck’s sake, we’ve been working with Ben for months. I’m pretty sure if he’s a serial killer or whatever, it would have come out by now.” Finn sat back in his seat, grumbling. “Not how serial killers work.” Rey was going to have a headache if this continued any longer, so she lied through her teeth at the reality of a new player joining their D&D party. Akio’s Idea
CW: Some vague past noncon references, discussion of traumatic events, referenced minor whump, referenced Oliver being gross as shit - all vague, Akio Gets An Idea, modern slavery
(Lisa Huang appears in Teenage Dream)
“Thanks for driving down here, Lisa.”
“No problem.” Lisa Huang pushes her glasses back up on her nose, sitting back in the hard plastic chair in the side room with its large conference table. The faint sounds of the gym are still audible here. Lisa’s got one ankle laid over the other knee, hands behind her head as she looks around. The heavy knit cap on her head is a deep saturated orange, the rest of her clothes a mix of faded gray and blacks. It makes her look, just a little, like she’s wearing a pumpkin on her head. “I needed to meet my sister for lunch some time this month, so I figured, two birds one stone. The drive down was really pretty, anyway. Wow, the gym has hardly changed at all, has it?”
“Not really.” Akio gives her a half-smile. He’s in his own casual clothes, just a hoodie over a t-shirt and jeans. He feels like she’ll see his heart beating, the way he shifts from foot to foot. Lisa was always good at reading people, better than Akio’s ever been, anyway. “New equipment, new kids, but… you know. You probably didn’t exactly get lost.”
“Ha! No. I could have walked to this room with my eyes closed.” She gestures at a large framed photo across the room, settled along a wall between two windows. “They haven’t even changed the team photo. We were, like, kids when we went there.”
Akio looks over his shoulder.
He’s right in the center of the photo, next to the old governor, smiling brightly for the camera. On either end of the line, their coaches. Spread throughout the center, all of them, a range of ages, wearing matching windbreakers and gym pants, smiling. All of them, smiling.
One of them, missing, presumed dead.
“Yeah, Mark’s still really proud of that, I guess.”
“I remember. That crusty old guy’s what got us the WRU sponsorship. Mark just about had a stroke when they wanted to do that whole marketing campaign with us.” Lisa laughs. Akio doesn’t. His nerves are shot, and he doesn’t want to make small talk about WRU. Not knowing what he knows. Not with who’s waiting in the hallway.
Lisa seems to pick up on his reticence. Her laughter fades, and she tilts her head, some of her black hair brushing along her shoulder. “Aki? What’s up, man? I haven’t talked to you in, like, six months and then you ask me to come down to the old gym and say it’s super important but you can’t say why on the phone. Talk to me, man. I don’t mind being here, but if you’re going to propose, I have some real bad news about how thoroughly I am not going to do that. Nothing personal, I don’t want that mess with anyone else, either.”
That does pull a laugh from him, and Lisa relaxes slightly. “Don’t worry, Lees, I’m not asking you to-... anything me,” Akio says, heading for the doorway to the conference room. His palms feel sweaty. His palms never feel sweaty. He can swing through the air and only feel the perfect rush of what his body can do, he can land on his feet, he broke an ankle once without a sound, but now… now he’s scared.
Scared of what he’s going to show her.
Scared of how she could react.
“I’m actually sort of dating someone,” Akio confesses, after a pause. “I mean. I think we’re dating.”
“Honestly, you not knowing if you’re dating someone or not is the most Nakamura thing I can imagine,” Lisa says cheerfully. “You haven’t changed much, either.”
Has he not? He feels like a whole different person since he found Tristan again. Like he’s aged ten years in a few weeks. A new anger burns under his skin, fury at grieving the loss of a boy who was never actually gone.
“What’s his name?”
Akio stops, hand on the doorknob, and turns to look over his shoulder at Lisa’s impish little grin.
“Oh, fuck off, Aki, you think I didn’t know? We practically lived together at the gym. What’s his name? Is that why you wanted me here, to meet him maybe?”
“His name’s-... uh, his name’s Ben. He’s not here, but. Okay, so. There’s something I needed to show you today. I want to show everybody from the old group, but… but I wanted to start with you.” He can feel heat in his eyes, unfamiliar fear making his pulse thrum. Something in his expression makes her own smile fade.
Lisa Huang leans forward, dropping both feet to the floor. She watches him, dark eyes traveling over his face. “Aki? What’s wrong?”
Akio laughs, a little helplessly. “Just… so much is wrong, Lisa.”
“Talk to me, Nakamura. What’s going on?” Lisa’s concern is open, and genuine, and he can’t think of any way to answer except just to open the door, glancing to where Chris is waiting sitting on a bench in the hallway, and gesture him inside.
Chris comes in slowly - he’s nervous, too, and one hand grips tightly to the oversized plastic feather necklace he’s always wearing, rubbing his thumb over the carved vanes. He’d be less recognizable, Akio thinks, if he still had the long blue hair and not the short copper. As it is, he’s all giant green eyes and narrow chin, black compression shirt under a loose oversized blue one, black jeans, wearing his friend’s old black-and-white checked shoes.
Lisa glances at him, and he’d be less recognizable, maybe, with blue hair, but Akio sees the color drain from her face as she takes in a man who is, as far as she knows, a very dead boy. She moves to stand, gets halfway up, drops back down into the seat again. “Aki-” Her voice catches, cuts off. “Akio, what-... who is-”
“Lisa.” Akio’s own voice is rough, staying close as Chris steps inside further, then stops. His thumb rubs at the plastic feather, his other hand curves over his stomach, gripping into the fabric of his t-shirt. “This is-”
“Tristan fucking Higgs.” Lisa cuts him off, getting to her feet again. “He’s-... Aki, Tristan’s-”
“A little less dead than we were supposed to think he was. This is, um. Christopher Stanton.” When Lisa looks at him, eyebrows furrowing, Akio shakes his own head in response. “He was Tristan Higgs. Our, our Tris-... but he ended up-”
“Lisa,” Chris says, suddenly, the name slotting into place in a mind where memories still slip and slide out of his awareness seemingly at will. They stick or they don’t, and Akio doesn’t know what makes the difference. His eyes light up, and he takes another two steps forward, then stops when Lisa flinches slightly back. “Lisa, um, Lisa… Lisa-... you, you, you you did, um, you did, you were good at the uneven bars, were, you you you-you… you wore the, the same ponytail holder every time you did a meet.”
Lisa’s eyes fill with tears, the glitter of them visible even across the room, and her hands come up to cover her mouth. “Oh my God,” She whispers. She sits back down, but it’s more like her legs simply stop working, dropping so heavily the chair creaks beneath her. She keeps whispering, oh my god, oh my god, over and over, her face ash-gray, her eyes locked on Chris’s face.
“Wha-... what…” Lisa takes in a breath, and then another, and Chris moves closer to her, bit by bit. Neither of them is able to close the last foot or so of distance, and Akio watches them, his own lips pressed together into a thin line. He’d expected her to deny it, to call this a joke, to call Chris an impostor, but-
Lisa was the one closest to Tris, other than him.
Lisa remembers him well enough to see him in the older, more angular face in front of her, knows him well enough to hear in his speech and the way his fingers tap carefully on his own skin - finger-twist tap tap tap - that it’s Tristan, through and through.
“What happened to you?” Lisa manages. She sounds like she’s choking on the words.
Chris rocks a little, uncertainly, his eyes drifting to look to the windows, the walls, drifting over the framed team photos over the years. “My, my, my parents-... after-”
“I remember that. But you-... you had to go live with someone-”
“My, my aunt.” Chris’s eyes find the old photo of the team with the governor and lock on. His pale eyebrows come together a little, frowning. Something in his face goes distant. “She, she, she… she gave me up.”
Lisa looks at Akio, who nods. “It’s true, as far as I can tell. He went to stay with his mom’s sister, and then… WRU.”
“After he ran away?”
Akio swallows, and shakes his head. “He, uh. He says he never ran away.” He doesn’t mean to talk for Chris, but Chris is moving away from them, staring at the photo on the wall, wandering towards it and away from he and Lisa entirely. “She, uh. She sold him.”
Lisa jerks forward, as though she’ll be sick on the floor, and closes her eyes. “That’s not possible,” She says, in a low voice. “That can’t be what happened. They would-... nobody would do that to someone, nobody would-”
“They did it to him. He didn’t even know who he was, Lees. They gave him a new name and did that thing where they take all his memories and they sold him to someone.”
Akio knows the look on Lisa’s face. Her mind is spinning, overwhelmed. He knows the feeling, he’s cycled through it a hundred times now, his body and brain working to understand that while he was crying in his bed missing his best friend, visiting his parents’ fucking graves to leave flowers for him, Tristan was locked up somewhere, not even knowing who he was.
“But WRU only takes people who sign up on purpose.” Lisa’s hands drop. Her mouth barely moves. There’s almost no sound to the words.
Akio takes in a breath, glancing over at Chris, standing in front of the photo of the team at the governor’s mansion. “So, I asked, he says-... that’s a lie. They… steal people. Or people get given to them, like Tris was.”
“Who-... who did they sell him to?”
“Him. I was, was, was sold to him.”
The two of them look over to where Chris is pointing at the center of the photo. Akio moves over to him, Lisa pushing herself up to follow on his heels.
Akio’s eyes follow the line of Chris's arm, to his index finger pressed just lightly against the glass covering the photo in the frame. Lisa jerks in a breath.
“You’re fucking kidding me,” She says, voice flat, almost empty, the emotions struggling to catch up to the pile of information building up. “That’s-... that’s the governor that got fucking murdered-”
“Right before he was supposed to testify against WRU,” Akio says, blinking. “I remember. Our coach was super pissed because of the publicity. He had some kind of bombshell something that was going to-... oh. Oh shit.”
If Chris hears either of them, he doesn’t show it. He just keeps looking at the man in the photo, tracing the line of his face with his fingertip.
"Right there," Chris says. “I was there.” His voice is nearly drowned out by the sound of creaking, of shouting, of bodies in the air or on mats coming in through the open door. Behind them, out in the practice area, nothing changes. Everything is the same, with Tristan and without him. Life went on.
Life goes on.
Here, though, the silence draws out, as Akio and Lisa stare at Chris's fingernail, with a star sticker stuck to it, and at the photo of the old governor, the one who died, with his arm around Akio's shoulders. Here, time stands horribly still.
"What do you mean-... you’d been… I mean, we had been told you’d, um, that you’d… you know-"
"Under the, the, the desk." Chris taps lightly on the glass. The desk was right behind them, in the photo. His finger is tapping just behind Akio's legs. "I was... right, right, right there. He, he, he, he liked that no one ever saw me. I was there.”
Akio looks at the smile on Governor Branch's face and remembers how his skin crawled at the man's too-friendly touch. How he’d kept asking questions about Tristan, pushing until Akio had gotten upset. How he’d joked with them and Akio had gone home and taken a shower that nearly burned him from the heat just to feel clean for reasons he couldn’t explain to himself.
How the governor kept asking about Tristan.
"I'm going to be sick," He whispers. Akio Nakamura, smiling gymnast, is standing right in front of the fucking desk. Oliver's hand curved around the ball of his shoulder and he's leaning in and, oh god, they're all smiling, all of them.
Their coaches had been so happy for the photo op.
“Tristan-” Neither of them correct Lisa on the name. “Are you-... are you saying you were under the desk when this photo was taken?”
Lisa’s in the photo, too. She’s off to the side, not really looking at the camera, smiling tightly. Lisa never liked photos, and she didn’t even want to go to the governor’s mansion that day. Her hair was longer then.
“Probably. Some… sometimes he would, um, he, he, he would, he would… make me wait in his, his, his room.”
“Gross,” Lisa says, weakly. “How-... how old were you?”
Chris blinks. He’s lost, Akio thinks. Inside his head, inside the memories he can’t hold on to very well. Grasping on with slippery fingers to images and thoughts that someone will have to remind him of later. “They, they, they, they told me to say I-I was eighteen.” He presses his finger directly over Oliver Branch’s face, digging the flat of it in until a smudged fingerprint nearly obscures the man’s face entirely. “They beat me un, until I said it.”
“WRU did?”
Chris nods.
“But you weren’t…”
“No.”
"Why would Governor Branch buy-... But why..."
"Too pretty," Chris whispers. "Too, too, too pretty for... for, um, for for anything else. He, he, he… wanted young." There's a healing wound on his forehead sure to scar and his green eyes are dark and Akio should move, before he throws up on the photo.
He can't. He keeps staring at the desk, like if he tries hard enough, he can step in and tell a younger version of himself Tristan isn't dead, he's right there, just look. Just look. Just look.
Tris was right there the whole time.
While Oliver Branch looked at Akio Nakamura like dinner laid out for him on a plate, he had Tristan under his desk, and when they left he probably pulled him out from under the desk and-
Akio has to turn away, then, jamming his hands into his hoodie pockets and walking away, to the window, breathing in and out as he stares at the cars in the parking lot outside. His blood rushes in his ears, pounds through his temples. His fingers pulse.
Behind him, Lisa asks Chris about his life now, and he answers, in his familiar stammer that Akio had missed so much when he had to live without it. He talks about his brother, going to college.
All of it is-... good, that Tristan rebuilt, that he has people now, a family. But he had a family then, one he should never have had to lose.
Akio has to let them talk, because he’s afraid if he opens his mouth he’ll start screaming.
How many people has this happened to? Akio knows the company line. People disappear into WRU sometimes, running from debt or criminal charges or homelessness, and they get a whole new life.
But he knows the other side of it now, too. He knows Chris - he knows his dead best friend was never dead at all. He knows what happened to him. He’s met a houseful of others - Chris’s older brother with a pretty smile who told him none of us ever want it, not really. The other quiet brother who has a scar on his neck he won’t talk about. The others who stared at him when he came over, terrified to get close to him, scared he’d turn them in.
Akio has started looking at the street kids he sees sometimes and wondering who ran away from WRU and who’s going to end up there.
He’s started to wonder if it has to be that way at all.
When he trusts his voice again, he says, “Did-... did WRU know you were-... weren’t willing-” It’s stupid, he knows better, but he wants - he wants so badly - for it to have been some kind of terrible misunderstanding. If it is, he tells himself, he can pull back from this.
If it is, he can focus on Tristan, he can walk away from the rest.
“They, they, they call us ‘underagers’,” Chris says, and he still doesn’t look away from Oliver Branch’s face. “We, we, we have special rooms. They… know. We’re... we, we, we... we sell for more. After I, I waas rescued they, um, they they they sent people once. To take me back. My, my, my brother kept me safe.”
Akio feels a rush of heat that threatens to burn him alive in his own fury. WRU has been giving the team money and marketing opportunities and bullshit since-... since they met the governor, who had been the one to hook them up with WRU in the first place, and… and the whole time he’d known what happened to Tristan, he was what happened to Tristan, Governor Branch and his oily fucking voice and his stupid jokes and he had Tristan the whole time.
WRU knew.
They know.
They’re still doing it, probably, hurting people like Chris, sending fucking SWAT teams after them if they get out. How many people are out there hurting like this?
There’s an idea that’s been building in the back of his mind. Foggy, barely-formed. But as his anger lights him up, Akio feels the pieces coming together. Speaking up, speaking out, telling people what happened to his best friend will probably ruin his career. It could ruin his life.
But there are a lot of people like Tristan Higgs whose lives are already ruined. A whole lot more whose lives will be if nobody ever stops it.
If he’s going to speak out, he might as well make sure everyone is listening.
“Lisa, do you still speak to the girls from the Canadian team?”
She nods, frowning. “Yeah, I speak to a bunch of different people still. Why?”
Akio looks over at Chris, at Tristan Higgs’s face. The last day he saw Tristan was at his parents’ funeral, wearing an ill-fitting suit and rocking against the weight of grief, his aunt saying it’d be awhile before he could come back to practice.
He’d never returned.
Then the texts stopped, then his aunt said he’d run off, then she said they’d found his body. Then then then. One lie after another, so she could fucking sell him. So WRU could make money off someone who needed help, who Akio couldn’t hear crying for him, for someone, for anyone, to get him out of this.
Akio turns back, and to Lisa and Chris he’s nearly a silhouette of darkness backlit by the light from outside.
“What if we-... what if we make it so WRU can’t do this anymore?”
“How?”
“I have an idea. Just... what if we make it so nobody can ignore what’s really happening anymore?”

Venus
A/N: warning for alc mentions, unprotected sex, some kinky slapping dom/sub stuff, my normal freak ass shit
-
Loving Klaus was easy, you found. Easy to have it open and known and free than to feel yourself wrestling with the feelings the way you had been a month prior. A month of ‘I love you’ and a month of really feeling like the two of you were a proper couple, at the very least like the two of you were real people. His siblings noticed it too, the shift. Like you were finally one of them, and it felt nice to belong. You really hadn’t ever felt that way before, not without drugs, and that was only belonging through wanting to get something out of someone else and not just the people themselves. Last week the holidays had come and gone, and you were honestly surprised his family had included you in the celebrations, despite the fact that you and Klaus had thrown them all a birthday party two months prior. Their holiday traditions were weird, donuts and eighties music and bickering, but it was nice. The week spanned on and turned to the final night, new years, finally the family happy to be seeing a year that isn’t some fucked up version of 2019 (one that Klaus has told you over and over his brother Ben was alive and absolutely cruel and you were married to your ex and clearly using) and finally ready to move on from it all. This timeline wasn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it was the one you both had together and it was the one his family fixed. Tonight was for celebrating, for dancing and drinking and forgetting your worries. It's fun, but it's only a matter of time before Klaus takes you home or to a forgotten spare room. Allison opens up her house in the city to her family and their guests. The night starts with dinner, which is a big potluck of foods that don't go together but all of the Hargreeves favorite foods. You can tell exactly who brought what, and no one is surprised by the insane amount of take out you and Klaus brought. There's cocktails which are actually made with care instead of mixed up sloppily like a child making potions out of shampoo in the tub.
It's around 11:25 when Klaus pulls you down the hall towards the guest room, shouting, “I am but a weary traveler! My Panacea and I need a respite before we keep entertaining you all!” which was met with rolling eyes and a few flinches at the abruptness of it all, but a steady fondness as the backdrop of it all.
Klaus drops to his knee the second the door is locked, and grabs your leg to hike it up. Your back comes to rest against the wall, jamming coats out of your way to get comfortable as he presses his plump lips to the shiny toe of your boot. His breath fans out, almost fogging the shiny fake leather of your boot before he starts kissing. He presses kisses from the tip of your toe up to where the arch of the side of your foot would be, then licks the rest of the way up to the ankle, moaning as he does so. A prayer, a promise, his devotion on display. This is Klaus wanting to be used, wanting to be objectified and made yours.
“I’m going to get famous again, baby.” He kisses the toe of your boot one more time before moving up and resting your foot on his bended knee. He pushes your skirt up, all the way to where your thigh meets your hip, and his hands are all over your leg as he speaks.
“Prophets gonna rise from the ashes, and this time I’m gonna build it all in your image,” his teeth rake the sheer tights at your calf, ripping at least one hole in them. They were new. “The whole worlds gonna worship you just like I do, fraulein.”
You’re halfway between a chuckle and a moan as one of his thumbs slides up into the back of your knee and the other presses a harsh circle to your inner thigh, right below where the panties of your lingerie begins, if you could even call them panties. They were a mess of mesh and lace that you saw in the mall and you just had to get them and their matching bra, even if now they seem a little gaudy. Klaus likes them, though, and got excited when you got dressed for tonight when he saw them laid out on the bed. He wanted to tear them off of you the moment he saw them, and he would do just that. His hand snakes its way up over your clothed cunt, making you groan at the contact, before he reaches the waistband of your tights and yanks them down with your panties as far as he can, pulling them to where your boots prevent them from coming off, essentially giving Klaus control of how much you can move during this tryst. Its now that he puts your leg down, letting you stand up straight again in front of his bent figure.
“Hit me,” he begs. Klaus’ eyes are blown wide with lust, even in the dark.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Hit me, slap me across the face,” he begs again, “Make me hurt, tell me ‘Klaus I want you to bleed for me’ I’ll do it.”
He gets this way sometimes. Arousal floods your system in the same vein as concern. If Klaus wants to be hurt, he’s usually already hurting.
“No, Klaus we don’t have time, let's talk about it,” You say, already sinking down onto your knees to join him, to cradle his face in your hands and to make him feel better.
“Doc, Doc there’s nothing wrong. I need relief. It's like, like a cure.Yeah. I’m hard as a rock, love, I need relief.”
Purely kinky. Consensual. If it's what Klaus wants, who are you to deny him of it? You rise up onto your feet again, preparing yourself to hit him. To Klaus, even in the darkness, he can make out that you look like something otherworldly, bigger and greater than human. You wind back, apprehensive but willing to do anything for him, something he recognizes not casually. As your open palm makes contact with his left cheek, a shuddering moan makes its way up from deep inside his stomach, out through his throat and past his lips orgasmic in execution.
“Again, please.”
And you indulge him twice more, until you're sure the hot skin on his face is reddened. There's a certain kind of thrill in knowing that your hands will leave a mark on him, that he’ll enter a new decade with your hands printed on his visage. Those three slaps are good enough to sate him for now, as he rises back to his feet, pressing his lips to yours as his hands go straight to your hair, any semblance of style you had put to it would be out the window in seconds. He backs you against the door until you hit it, then you both start to slide to the floor. He guides you down gently, taking extra care to remember the tights holding your ankles hostage, and lays you down against the hardwood, the warmth of his old faux fur trim jacket like a blanket to cushion you as he pushes your skirt back up to your waist.
He bends you in half, pulling your legs up to meet your chest; your boots clanking together on his shoulder as he pushes into you, immediately filling you to the hilt. This angle is nothing short of divine for you both, your legs pressed together making you feel just that much tighter wrapped around Klaus’ cock, and the angle leaving you mercilessly open to his thrusting.
“This is the tightest, wettest little cunt I've ever had the pleasure of serving,” Klaus whispers as he pulls out and slams back into you before setting his pace.
He's fast, working against the clock, and against every nerve ending in your body. You don't try to stifle the moans as his thrusts rock your entire body along the floor. He fucks like a man with a gun to his head, hitting you deep each time, a staccato of his name falling from your lips as he pants and growls in your ear. You feel your orgasm coming before you can warn him, and the spasming of your body surprises you both earth shattering, convulsing waves of pleasure hit you, and all you can do is cling to each other as it ruins you. The spasming of your muscles triggers him as well, and you can feel every drop of hot white cum that he shoots into you, filling you deep.
He kisses you, muttering little ‘I love you’s as he pulls out, gently pulling your thighs off his shoulder and pulling your panties up; rolling your ripped tights up with the utmost care and dedication before you reach for him again to help you stand, shaky knees and dizzy from his affections. Love drunk as well as martini drunk, ready to face midnight.
“Klaus, Klaus I need to find a restroom before we go back out there. I need to clean myself up.” You can already feel his sticky white dripping out of you, no doubt making an irreversible mess of those panties he liked so much. It would be uncomfortable to sit, to move unless you got to the bathroom and got yourself fixed up. Klaus whips back around to look at you as his hand grasps the doorknob.
“Don’t you dare, you venus in furs, let it be a reminder of what's going to happen when we get home.” there's pure evil in his tone and in his smile, “Plus, you'll miss midnight if you run off on me.”
He pulls the door open and leads you back out into the festivities.

Snapped
At first, Marina didn't mind the new Ben. Sure, it took some getting used to, but given what they've been through so far, the change in attitude made sense to her.
However, what did get on her nerves, was his constant insistence on her needing protection. It felt like he didn't trust her to take care of herself.
Marina knows she isn't perfect, but if she could survive Emeric, she could survive R.
She was able to shake her friends' concern off at first, calming them down with a sweet smile and a soft yet clear 'i'm okay.' But after what happened to Rowan... Everything broke down.
The mask of patience and empathy Marina had worked years and years to build on, cracked and shattered when she had to carry her best friend-No, the corpse of her best friend, back to Hogwarts castle.
In the chaos of her mind, she found two people to blame for her friend's death. The first one was clear, the dastardly witch who had cast the spell that took Rowan's life.
The second one, however, all her friends disagreed with, which only infuriated Marina more. Was she really the only one who realized that if Dumbledore never hired Rakepick in their fourth year, that Rowan would still be walking among them? Was she the only one who held a grudge against the headmaster, for never listening to them, for being incapable of dealing with the cursed vaults himself, and that he waited for children to be in too deep to return to start looking into it?
But, she just has to swallow her words and anger, the bitter taste being oh-so-familiar to her. If she ever got her hands on Rakepick-
The sound of a shattered glass made all the members of the Circle of Khanna look at the young Slytherin student.
Marina blinked slowly, still processing what had happened, while Merula already started scolding her and Ben started gathering the glass shards that had scattered across the floor.
"Sorry, I was lost in thought," Marina muttered softly, her lips curling into a tired smile, that put most of her friends at ease.
"Maybe you need some rest? You look like you need," Jae suggested, worry still clear on his face.
Marina fought the urge to sigh, the last thing she needed was to sleep. What she needed, was for Rowan to be avenged, Rakepick to die, and for all wizards and witches associated with R to be locked up in Azkaban or rotting in a cemetery.
"He's right, don't worry, I'll protect you and watch over you," Ben said, already gotten rid of the glass shards and offered his hand out to the brunette.
Marina took his hand with a sigh and let him hoist her to her feet. "Maybe just a small nap then," She agreed, hoping her ever-growing irritation would shrink. She doubted it.
The walk to the Slytherin common room was silent, nothing but the sound of other students and the creaking of stairs or old doors around them.
"Maybe you should tell me the Slytherin password whenever it changes," Ben said, breaking the silence, much to Marina's dismay. "That way we can all reach you, not just Merula and Barnaby."
"Liz and Ismelda can reach me too, I'll be fine," Marina said firmly, hoping Ben would get the hint and shut up.
But of course, he didn't.
"But the more to protect you, the better. We couldn't protect Rowan, so I'm gonna make sure I won't lose you too." Marina sighed at Ben's words and opened her mouth to comment, but Ben didn't allow her to.
"Listen, I know you're the 'savior of Hogwarts' and whatnot," He said, making quotation marks in the air. "But you're R's current target. We need to stay around you to make sure nothing will happen to you. Truly, Acacius is unresponsible for not getting you out of Hogwarts-"
"Would you just shut the fuck up?" Marina growled out lowly, her fist slowly clenching in a last effort attempt to reign in her anger.
"Acacius offered, but I refused. You know why?" She asked lowly, turning her head so she could glare at the Gryffindor. She didn’t understand why her rage boiled over. But it felt so darn good to finally let it all out.
"Because I'm the only one who actually gets shit done. Merula's little training scheme, got us caught. Your whole new, adrenaline junkie thing, it's getting old Benjamin. You think you can protect me?" Marina scoffed loudly, turning on her heel, merely glancing at him over her shoulder. "Should have used that spirit for Rowan. Cause last time I checked, I don't need anyone. Especially people who need my protection to be able to get shit done."
As Marina started walking away from the shell-shocked Ben, Merula almost literally ran into her, stopping just in time with a huff. "And where are you-"
"Congrats, most powerful witch of Hogwarts, you're the leader of the Circle of Khanna. I don't want anything to do with it." Marina made a last attempt to fake a smile, but it looked more like a crazy grin.
Her anger was clear to read on her face and the mask she spent her entire childhood creating, broke down. And as Marina walked to her brother's secret room, she vowed not to rest until the only thing remaining of R would be their ashes.

“I think it would be best if we keep up the ruse for a short while longer,” Five said. “For the sake of time-space continuity.”
“Oh, so Klaus was right before, huh?” Diego said. “The fabric of the universe unravels if my hairdresser knows we’re not boning?”

Five really should have guessed that something would go wrong. The universe hated him, it was an abject fact. And right now, Five hated the universe right back.
The commission turns Five into a four year old, hoping it will make him easier to kill.

The skirt hanging off of it is pleated and pale pink, with two white stripes near the hem— like a cheerleader might wear, Diego thinks wildly— and Five looks almost awed. Diego doesn’t want to assume anything by an expression alone, but he can’t quite help it.
Before he can stop himself, the words are tumbling out. “That would look good on you.”
Or, the one where diego fucks five while he's wearing a skirt.

“It’s hard to explain.”
“Try me.”
Five sighs.
“I’m trying to prove that our current timeline has branched off from it’s initial trajectory by such a large margin that it could only have been caused by the existence of unknown variables interrupting the timeline at non-linear points throughout history. I believe that we are living in...let’s call it timeline 2.0.”
“I don’t understand,” Diego says. Nutcase, he thinks. Insanely hot nutcase.
This time Five smirks at him, looking bratty and arrogant and entirely too sharp; “I know you don’t.”
Or: What I like to imagine alternate/Sparrow Academy timeline 2019 Five and Diego are up to

“I think he’s talking to himself again,” Ashley said, leaning forward. “Okay yeah he is — oh my god, is that kid talking to the mannequin?”
Maggie shot a glance behind her. Yes, the boy was talking to the top half of a mannequin.
“I love working here,” Ashley breathed.
Wherein Klaus, Dave, Five and Dolores go on a double date, and people are confused and very concerned.

When Five blinks, sometimes he's back in the world of ash and embers. It's hard to remember how to breathe when that happens. In which Klaus tries to play the role of supportive brother with Ben's help, and Five struggles more than he lets on.

The first thing he noticed was the heat. A sudden, overwhelming heat. It started by his neck, his throat tightening, cutting off oxygen to his brain. The heat spread lower, permeating throughout his chest and abdomen, focusing and growing in his groin. Every inch of his skin was on fire. He couldn’t breathe; he couldn’t think. He needed something- anything- to relieve the ache that had abruptly settled in his bones. Lust utterly consumed him.
“Something’s wrong.” Diego concluded.

Five hesitated.

The last time Klaus saw his siblings was at Allison and Patrick's wedding. A lot had changed since then; including the not-so-accidental, irreversible loss of his sight.
There's no time to tell them that, though. Not with the return of their long-presumed-dead brother and the impending apocalypse. Plus, it doesn't matter. He's got Ben as a good seeing-eye ghost.
☁︎ Digging Up The Past by FiveUmbrellaAcademy { E / WIP }

"You want to roleplay me being raped." Five muses, stirring his margarita. He plucks out the tiny umbrella and leaves it abandoned on the edge of the table.
Diego splutters, before glancing wildly over his shoulders.
Five and Diego are in a busy bar, and Diego had absentmindedly suggested Five looking particularly hot, especially when he's pliant, almost as if he's being -

The little boy, who Dave could now see was not as little as he’d first thought, shoved a tin mug at him. “Drink this.”
Dave drank. It tasted sickly sweet and slightly citrus-y. “Who are you?”

You’re making a mess, is what Diego wants to snap back. Instead he hears his mom’s voice clear as day say ‘boys will be boys’ and without thinking he’s moving on autopilot.
Diego can feel his hands clenching rhythmically at his sides before he’s moving forward to take the bowl from Klaus and ripping the apron off in one smooth motion. Discarding the bowl to the side he works on getting the strings untangled and slips the apron over his own clothes.
“Out.”
He has so much work to do. The pancake is beyond salvaging, the kitchen is a mess, and he’s fairly certain the batter is inedible.

According to his calculations, wiping Reginald's existence from the timeline means the apocalypse never occurs. But of course, this leaves several newly orphaned fourteen year olds in his care.

Five was different. He’d always known. Different from most people, what with his freakish birth, powers and unconventional upbringing, all that old news. And different from his siblings. He was smarter. His powers were stronger. And he’d never picked a name. All that was old news too. But there was something else that separated him from the rest, something he didn’t know how to put a finger on, how to categorize, analyse, understand. Five didn’t like not understanding. It was probably Klaus that made him first notice something was off.

A look into what Klaus' newly discovered ability could mean for the siblings.
Diego could feel his whole body trembling as he faced the ghosts, only able to take shallow breaths as he struggled to process the true horror of what he was seeing.
And then they started howling.
The sound pierced though his stupor and forced him to his knees instantly. It was like nothing Diego had ever experienced before, and he was consumed with the intensity and overwhelmed by a deep chilling fear. It felt as though his mind had been taken over and all he could hear was the shrieks of grief, more intense than any emotion he had ever felt.

English Test Hopefuls - Top Order Batsmen
Toby Reynolds, 05/05/2021
To celebrate the start of the English summer and the upcoming Test matches against New Zealand and India, I have decided to talk about the best English players hoping to make their mark in the County Championship and receive a call up to play for their country. Today we start with the top order batsmen.
Current Top Three
The current incumbent men are likely Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley. Jonny Bairstow held the number three place over the winter, but struggled heavily in India and will likely lose his place in the side, particularly as he has often struggled with the swinging ball in England.
Many pundits believe that Rory Burns seems to be the player most at risk of losing his spot. However, I think that is very unfair. He averages marginally more in Test cricket than his opening partner Dom Sibley from his five extra matches. Although Burns has failed to score an international fifty in his past eight innings, he has ten years of County Championship experience at an average of over 40 (the only player discussed in this article with an average over 40). We must also not forget how impressive he was in the 2019 Ashes series, averaging almost 40, while none of the other openers averaged above 20. This series showed how well Burns deals with pressure and that when the going gets tough, he digs in and scores important runs.
Dom Sibley has had an unfortunate start to this season. He scored 29 and 0* in the first match of the season for Warwickshire but got injured in the following match. Sibley will possibly be out for the New Zealand series and even if he is back, will likely have not played much cricket before the series. This will be different to Burns, who is currently averaging 43 from his four matches. Sibley had a mixed winter, scoring two fifties but averaging 18 and struggling the rest of the tour. If Sibley makes it back from injury in time then I am sure he will start the first test of the summer.
Kent and England superstar, Zak Crawley, has struggled at the start of this season. In the first four matches, Crawley has only managed one fifty and is averaging a disappointing 24. It is unlikely he will be dropped as one of England’s most exciting young talents and his average of 34 is one of England’s best since Trott, Cook and Strauss, even if this is helped significantly by his 267 vs Pakistan.
Always a Chance
James Bracy was plucked out of relative obscurity last summer when he was named in the fifty man squad to train while the country was in lockdown. He had impressed for the England Lions, batting down the order and taking the gloves, and has since continued his fine form. He is currently batting number three for Gloucestershire and is averaging 55 this season with a brilliant hundred at Somerset and three other fifties. Bracy is probably most likely to replace any of the current top three. He has followed the squad round Asia and scored a great 80 in an internal warm up game last summer.
Adam Lyth was known as one of Yorkshire’s most talented youngsters, alongside Joe Root, Garry Balance and Jonny Bairstow. He finally got his chance to open the batting for England in 2015. He scored a fantastic hundred against New Zealand in the second test before struggling in the Ashes and being dropped after the series. He hasn’t played for England since but has really excelled this season, averaging over 70 with two hundreds and two fifties. Lyth is making a strong claim to the opening spot as an experienced batsmen with a good First Class record, averaging 38.
Outsiders
Aged 19, Haseeb Hameed was Lancashire's first opening batsman to play for England since Michael Atherton in 2001. He took to test cricket unbelievably well in the three matches he played before getting injured. He averaged 44 in test cricket and scored a gritty fifty with a broken hand to back up an 82 in his first test. After his short test career, Hameed failed to find any sort of form in the County Championship, until this year. He struggled in the first game of the season but managed a fifty in the second. He then dominated in his third match, scoring a hundred in both the first and second innings and taking the record for the most balls faced in a County Championship match. He followed this up with a 97 over the weekend and currently averages 57 this season. It is unlikely Hameed will get a match for England this summer as he hasn’t been consistent enough over the past few years and they wouldn’t want to throw him in at the deep end and destroy his confidence again.
The three other players who are probably not being considered but have scored runs this year are Chris Dent, Sam Robson and Ben Slater. Chris Dent has opened the batting for Gloucestershire for the past decade and has arguably been one of the most consistent run scorers in the championship. He has definitely been unlucky not to get a call up to England, but being over 30 means he is possibly missed his chance. Sam Robson has seven test caps for England, with one hundred and an average of 30. This seems to be a common theme for English openers post-Strauss. He failed to impress in his short stint and Cook made the decision to drop him from the side after Robson was over-analytical of himself and tried to keep tweaking his technique. He is averaging slightly under 50 this season with a hundred and 95, but will probably not get a call up unless there is a huge spree of injuries. Ben Slater is a 29 year old opening batsman for Nottinghamshire. He averages 33.5 in First Class cricket but averages over 50 this season with two hundreds. He impressed in pre-season, where I saw him grind out a fifty while conditions were tough, before becoming more expansive in the afternoon sessions and continuing to 103* vs Oxford UCCE. It would be a surprise pick to see him in an England squad but with Ed Smith losing his job, anything could happen.

Okay, hang on bitches, cause Imma bout ta rewatch “The Final Problem.” I’ve seen it once since 2017. And because there is no commentary on the disc I have, I will be providing the commentary.
[[MORE]] Since I started my “rewatch and comment” spree, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Things that had previously stood out in my mind as being particularly not-good are really not that bad. Most were actually really short moments that stood out in retrospect because they seemed incongruous with how well-written and acted everything else was.
Up till season 2, the writers could do no wrong whatsoever. The exact moment I experienced a “well that was overdone” moment of questioning the writers was when Sherlock broadcast a picture of Mary on the outside of the facade in “His Last Vow.” From there, I had moments of doubt and questioning plot and directing choices that took away from the narrative. But, except for the moment John sees Mary die, I never ever questioned the acting choices. The actors are so amazing. And I’m not just saying that because Ben and Martin are hot.
As I prepare to watch the episode, there are several scenes that I dread. Opening with the girl on the airplane reminds me of how much I hated this trick. If the girl is Eurus messing with them, then why do we see it acted out? If we cannot trust that what we see is a reality, then all of the “Mind Palace” theories of TFP (i.e. that it actually took place in a dream or in the head of a character) have some authenticity to them. Ugh.
Damn. I’d forgotten the “Hello. My name is Jim Moriarty” part of the intro. No need for that if the girl is just something in Eurus’s imagination.
Oh shit. I hate hate hate hate everything about this scene of Mycroft.
First of all, there is security in Mycroft’s house.
Second of all, he would have skewered any of those actors with the umbrella sword or shot one of them with the gun.
Why are the paintings crying blood? John and Sherlock couldn’t accomplish that... once we add scary clown it’s just too much. Even for Sherlock.
Oh stop with the heavy-handed East Wind references. Dammit, I loved this show for its subtly. Killer clowns are not subtle, even in pranks.
Now with Mycroft here, in the client position, refusing to sit, with the Baker Street Boys in their chairs - this is what I came for. The light, the look on their faces, the composition of the shot.
Oohh Hudson throwing some shade. John’s half smile...
Is the skull portrait glowing? I can’t tell.
“That’s why he stays!” Fuck yeah. John’s half smile again...
“Middle child. Explains a lot.” As a middle child, I resent that remark. And sort of get it.
So the flashing back and forth in time, with the ashes of Musgrave Hall in the apartment, 5 year old Eurus answering grown-up Mycroft’s questions, the pebble: all of that would be okay, if not a tiny bit less than subtle, had we not just fought a goddamn clown in the scene before.
Oh goddamn. The stupid fucking patience gernade and that song.
Of course Mrs. Hudson vacuums to Iron Maiden.
It’s Sherlock’s turn to half-smile. Cute.
Beautifully shot here with the above view and all three of them at different points on a circle around it.
Ugh. I have to turn away at the “action shot” of them jumping out the window. This is not “Die Hard.” It’s not a cop buddy movie. We just got a really well played, fun little scene where they talked a about Oscar Wilde to avoid talking about the fact that they might die. That’s what I watch Sherlock for.
There was a fan fic written around 2012 that mentions “The Importance of Being Ernest.” Coincidence? Creators reading fanfic? I know Wilde and ACD were contemporaries, but it’s interesting. I can’t think of any other literary works that are alluded to in canon. It’s funny it should be this one.
And now we’ve commandeered a boat. Seriously.
All of the other episodes, I had more patience with on this go-around where I get a chance to type out reactions and reflect on how they are put together. But I’m finding that isn’t the case with this one. I’m just pissed. Give me one or two unbelievable moments or plot twists in an episode and I can sustain it. But between the airplane, killer clowns at Mycroft’s, the patience gernade, and this, I’m already done and we’re 20 minutes in. Sherlock looks like a goddamn vampire bat. And seriously, why does Mycroft need to steal a boat? And write a message in the sand? What the hell? Why dress up?
Sherlock’s security guard act cracks me up.
Oh his face when he sees Eurus. His. Face. Curiosity. Heartbreak. Empathy. Pain. Doubt. Fear. THIS is my show. Not patience gernades, killer clowns, dressing up like a sea captain etc in one damn episode.
She “enslaves” people... magical Eurus who makes people kill their family. Really?!
Oh no. He ignores “Vatican cameos.” I forgot that. He chooses to ignore John’s warning.
His face.... Jesus Benedict can act.
Big bouncy red alert! Okay, what was with the spinning John face when he gets knocked out?
This constant shift between wondering what the hell is happening, wondering if the show has become a parody of itself, and then bouncing back to this heart wrenching narrative — is that the point of this episode? Like “The Empty Hearse” or “The Abominable Bride”? But those episodes explained themselves after they pulled the rug out. As soon as something got to the point of absurdity, it was explained. Sherlock didn’t swing in a window at Bart’s and kiss Molly but we briefly were led to believe he did. Moriarty and Sherlock aren’t really kissing on the roof. (By then we knew what was up though). Sherlock didn’t really attempt to dig up a dead Amelia Rocoletti. We understand it’s a drug-induced dream.
This rapid jumping back and forth with half-assed explainations — I’m coming to believe this off-balance feeling is the point of the episode but I don’t like it. I like it even less than I did before.
Oh Andrew Scott. I love you.
The bastards wait till 5 minutes into the Moriarty scene to tell us it’s 5 years ago. That constant pulling out the rug — I will at least excuse that because there is a plausible explaination given. But it’s a cheap trick. This episode is one cheap trick after another, with only a few moments, here and there, of characters actually interacting.
So it’s late and I don’t know if I have the heart to make it through this whole episode tonight. To be continued....
Edited:
Starting at scene 5 on the DVD because that's when Sherlock sees Eurus for the sort of first time. I kind of just want to bask in Ben's performance here again.
After the last episode, clean-shaven Sherlock in a suit is a relief. He's back... at least a little.
His small smile when he asks her how she got out. . .
I'm realizing how much of this scene had to be Benedict looking directly into the camera and talking to Eurus. That had to be intimidating.
***I've skipped ahead to closer than where I was last night because the small people in my house will want food soon. Parentig gets in the way of fangirling. ****
I still love the Hungry Donkey story.
OH MY GOD! I forgot how much I love Andrew Scott here!!!
Are they making out through the glass?
And now the four of them wake up in a cell but this one has glass. Ugh. The plane again. I love how Sherlock changes his voice here to talk to the girl. He isn't incapable of reading people and reacting to them. He just usually can't be bothered. There’s a fan theory that says Sherlock is autistic. I was going to comment that this skill of his is evidence that he’s not but I stopped myself. He -knows- HOW one needs to act to get people to respond to him, but it’s a learned skill. Which actually might add evidence to the “autism” theory more than the sociopath theory.
Mark Gatiss - I forget what an incredible actor he can be. Whoa.
These scenes - these scenes where they have to apply themselves to a task that Eurus sets for them -- they are so fucking good. Tense and well-acted. I can see every emotion on every actor's face. The rest of the episode should have been better to make it worthy of these performances. It physically hurt watching John try to shoot the governor.
Someone said that Jim Moriarty went from a criminal mastermid to manical Thomas the Train Engine on this episode and I can't unthink that any time he flashes on the screen.
I had a moment, when Eurus was using such clinical language of behavioralism ("prompts") etc that I flashed back onto my life as an ABA instructor. Seriously. I know they are a million miles away but no one watching this would ever think, even for a second, that Eurus was morally right. Why, then, do we do a smiliar thing to autistic children? I had a moment of revulsion then. (Restirct physical liberty and autonomy, make them complete a command that's nonsensical for either reward or aversive. Give prompts. Follow through (deny reward) if one deviates from the prompt). She might as well been saying "Touch table, Sherlock." ("Touch table" is one of the first directives often given in ABA. It's easy to manually prompt (force) a kid to do and helps the kid realize the link between following the requests and obtaining rewards.)
Sorry. ABA rant is slightly off topic.
To be continued in comments ..

summary: The tradition was to find one thing that marked the old Baudelaire mansion as alive.
The silence weighed heavy there.
The Baudelaire mansion stood in the middle of the street, as it always did, and as it always would, set back a ways from the road by a long and winding driveway that appeared a deep and gaping cavity in the darkness. The black iron fence still stood, if only to the testament of its own resilience against time. No lights flickered in the windows; they were cold and still, the few curtains drawn. Trees that must have once been lush and colorful now gnarled themselves around the house like enormous, weathered hands, and in whatever spaces that remained, the ivy crept in, gripping the lawn and what was left of the turrets, the doors, the balconies, even overtaking the trees themselves. If one were to go behind the house, they would find the garden overgrown. The little stone pathways had cracked with age, as had the fountains and the statues, pockmarked by dead space where the stone itself had crumbled off. Where man’s greed and misfortune had staked its claim on the Baudelaire mansion, once reducing the structure to an ashen, skeletal frame, the earth’s reclamation continued to hold it back together.
What they will not tell you about the Baudelaire mansion is that it was rebuilt, before this and after the fire, when the mansion had a different name and a different family and a different although not altogether dissimilar story behind it. What they will tell you is that the state of ruin it is in now is, to their minds, the mark that something is never truly undone. The skeleton remains, the bones remember, there will always be a piece left that can never be covered up. Some mistakes, they will tell you, will just last, like ink staining a page, a chair, or a section of skin, taut and young. Age will never temper it all, and it never, ever could. It would last as it was, no matter.
Ophelia was twelve years old, and she lived down the street, and she had been to the Baudelaire mansion only a few times before, but never on a night like this. Merry and Ben lived on the other side of town, and they all knew each other from school, and that night they had met up in the city and made their way up and down the streets until they arrived at the Baudelaire mansion last. They stood, the three of them, at the old black iron gate, and when Ophelia touched it, the gate swung in, with a slow, steady creak.
“Are you sure this is okay?” Merry whispered. She fidgeted when she was nervous, and she adjusted the Alice band holding her hair back, again and again.
“Yes,” Ophelia said. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.”
“My parents keep telling me the old Baudelaire mansion is haunted,” Ben said. “I didn’t believe them.” He sounded as if he wanted to.
Ophelia didn’t believe them, although she had to admit that the state of the Baudelaire mansion could not inspire confidence. Nevertheless, she was determined to see the night through. She took a step forward, into the unknown, and even she was relieved when her boots hit the firm, solid drive.
“Did anyone bring a flashlight?” Ophelia asked.
“I hope so,” Merry said, “because I forgot mine.”
“Oh, I did.” Ben dug around in his bag and pulled out his flashlight. He switched it on, and it cast a bright white patch around them. The three made their way towards the mansion, past the trailing ivy and the old trees, Ben’s flashlight leading them on. Their eyes lingered on the statue of a woman in the yard, old and grey, everything about her set in stone, and then they looked away.
“Why do your parents think it’s haunted?” Ophelia asked.
Ben shrugged. “Well, I mean, they’ve lived in the city for a long time. They said a lot of things happened here, but they don’t really talk about it to me. They say they’ve seen a man here who looks like one who used to live here a long time ago.”
Merry whimpered, and she reached out for Ophelia’s hand. Ophelia took it.
“If your parents still live here, maybe that man still lives here, is all,” Ophelia said.
“I don’t think it looks like anyone lives here,” Merry said.
The front door was ajar when they reached it. A single candle was lit on the porch step, carefully encased in a smooth glass cover. Ophelia watched the flame; she knew what they said about fire. But the flame stayed where it was, swaying to and fro in the safety of the glass.
The three of them stood in front of the steps, watching the door. It didn’t move.
“They say he still wears the same clothes,” Ben offered.
“Maybe he’s just particular,” Ophelia offered in return. She too was particular. She was also practical.
Merry was neither. “Maybe it’s because he’s a ghost.” She cowered behind Ophelia, still holding her hand. “What if we don’t make it?”
“I think we’ll make it,” Ophelia said. “We do this every year, it’s tradition. And we’re already here. We can’t back out now.”
“Merry, why do you come if you’re so scared?” Ben asked.
Ophelia thought he wasn’t one to talk, but she decided not to say anything.
“I always hope one day I won’t be,” Merry said. “I just haven’t quite found that day yet.” But she swallowed, and she hooked her arm through Ben’s, and she set her jaw.
The three approached the door. Ben nudged it open the rest of the way with his flashlight, and they stepped inside.
The darkness in there, a cold and a heavy darkness, sat along their skin. Ben’s flashlight flickered. The beam shone over the twin staircases on either side of the foyer, how they stretched up and up towards the high ceiling, how the walls alongside were old and peeling, faded floral paper dangling, forgotten. The few tables that remained were covered in thin, dusty white sheets, and when Ben moved forward to shine the light in further, his footsteps echoed in all the open, empty space. It was as silent and as closed as a grave. Unmarked, unknown.
The tradition was to find one thing that marked the old Baudelaire mansion as alive. Not haunted, but alive. A flower in a crack in a window. A sheet of paper, blank and waiting, in a typewriter. A record still left in the victrola. Something to say, even here, there had been life.
The three of them kept to the ground floor. They went along slowly, even Ophelia, scared to disturb the silence. The other rooms were more furnished than the foyer, although not by much. A warped coffee table here and an aging couch there did not make it any more of a home or any less unsettling. Dust and cobwebs had become a part of each room, more than the furniture, more than the old paintings on the walls, more than the boarded-up fireplaces, more than the still piano in the den or the typewriter left in the office, almost embalmed with time. It was so hard to tell someone had even ever been there in the first place, if all that was left had decayed like it had, carving its existence into the house over what life had been there.
They reached the back room last.
Ophelia shivered when they passed through the doorway. The sunroom was her least favorite. She imagined it as bright and sunny, with the light streaming in the windows, little dust motes floating along in the air. In the night, something about the room always smelled like ash. Jagged window glass laid upon the tiled floor, where careless dirt still lingered. Ben’s flashlight cast more light than the moon outside, and the beam caught over sharp corners and edges until—
“There!” Ben exclaimed.
It was a handful of rose petals, grouped on the edge of a rickety black table like a red spill. Their relief was as palpable as anything else in the house, and they each took one, a second heartbeat in their hands, a light, proof.
“Ophelia,” Merry whispered, suddenly, “was that statue always there?”
Ophelia looked up. She locked eyes through the windows with a statue of a woman—young and beautiful, but with such a melancholy and anger about her that it seemed to sink her eyes back into her face. She held her hands out in front of her, open, and her grey dress cracked up from the bottom. It was as if, like the iron fence, she was keeping herself up only out of spite.
Ophelia remembered the statue.
She had last seen it by the driveway.
“No,” she murmured.
Ben swallowed. “Oh no.”
Merry grabbed at their hands, tugging them to the doorway. “We should go now,” she said, “if we go now we can still—”
The statue vanished.
They ran to the door, Merry in the lead. They could hear the woman behind them, growing closer. The floor sagged in her wake, stone dragging across the floor. Her eyes were on them. They knew they would not make it out of this house. They would not make it out alive, if they did. The door was too far away. The woman was so close. They would end there, with the rest of the house.
A man stood at the door.
Ophelia and Merry and Ben stopped short. They held onto each other and prepared to scream, as the man stood there, all in black and impassive. Their voices didn’t come, only the frantic and uneven breathing of terror. The man produced something from behind his back, and then opened his mouth to speak.
“Fear,” he began, in an uncommonly gentle voice, “is a word which here means a sensation that strikes when one is presented by something unnerving, unnatural, or particularly anxiety-inducing. It is typical on a night like this, although you perhaps did not anticipate it to be quite so awful. For that, I can only apologize, but I must remind you, fear itself is nothing of which to be ashamed or frightened. It is a natural human response, and we must value it as we do all other natural human responses.”
“Lemony,” came an exasperated voice. “Let the kids take their candy.”
The man bent down very slowly in front of them and lowered the bowl in his hands. He smiled. The three children stayed stunned only for a moment longer, until their hearts reminded them that they were in fact alive, against all odds, yet again. The foyer looked no different no different than it had when they walked in, but it felt warmer now. They reached into the bowl he offered and took their candy.
They looked back at the woman; in her glory, Mrs. Baudelaire stood there, heavy rocks hanging from her dress, her whole body painted over in grey. She watched them with sharp, clever eyes.
“Boo,” she breathed, and they bolted.
They took the steps two at a time, the driveway at an impossible speed, careening back through the night.
“Well, we made it,” Ophelia said as they ran.
“Another year!” Ben shouted, raising his flashlight in triumph. “Another Baudelaire haunted house!”
“It never gets any easier,” Merry said.
“You did it, though,” Ophelia pointed out.
Merry ducked her head and smiled, and then ran right into the group of people standing in the street beyond the front gate, Ophelia and Ben tumbling after her.
Soft, small hands pulled them to their feet. “Are you alright?” someone asked in a familiar voice.
“Do you need any band-aids?” asked a second voice, just as familiar.
“We have an awful lot of them in the house.”
“On the second floor, the one we didn’t decorate.”
When the children looked up, they saw the concerned faces of Violet and Klaus Baudelaire, and of Mr. Baudelaire behind them, all three dressed in costume and carrying full bags behind them.
“I think we’re okay,” Ophelia said. “Thank you.”
“Great house,” Ben said.
“Mr. Baudelaire,” Merry cut in, “why don’t you ever hand out the candy instead of Mrs. Baudelaire and the other Mr. Baudelaire? Can’t you do it next year?”
“Oh, but they have so much fun doing up the house and handing out candy,” Mr. Baudelaire said. “Lemony practices the advice he gives all year!”
“Father,” Klaus said, rolling his eyes.
“They’re so embarrassing,” Violet muttered.
“We’ll see you at school on Monday,” Ben said.
In the morning, the Baudelaires—Mrs. Baudelaire, and Mr. Baudelaire, and the other Mr. Baudelaire, but not their children, for they will still be sleeping—will take down their decorations, and they will tame the ivy, and they will move the old statues and fountains into storage once more and bring out the newer ones that will last the winter, and they will fix the roof, because Mr. Baudelaire respects his wife’s dedication to the spirit of the season but does not care for the squirrels the hole in the attic invites, and the other Mr. Baudelaire will clean the dust off every inch of his typewriter, and Mrs. Baudelaire will spend the afternoon sneaking pieces of her children’s candy. All three of them will be wearing socks that will cover their ankles.
They will take their socks off that night, as they always do, in the comfort and safety of their bedroom, and they will look at each other. They will tell themselves, nothing is ever truly undone. Joy is only a crafted thing, and it cannot replace their lives. The bones remember, under skin that was taut and young and stained, what age has never, ever, ever tempered. They will tell themselves that, like their house, they have not been spared. They can make it better, they can go on, they can cover it up with a mask and try and change it into something better, but they can never change. This house will hold them, and they will hold it, where the smell of ash has claimed them all.
They will look at their house. They will look at the mansion that, when they had all been children, much younger than their children now, was the childhood villa of the other Mr. Baudelaire, whose last name has not been lost to time but just isn’t mentioned as often as his husband’s, because it was easier for the neighborhood children and the local school district. They will look at the place the other Mr. Baudelaire grew up, the place their children are growing up now, the place all of them spent a good deal of time believing one thing or another. They will look at how they have filled up the home with their lives, new and old, how they have layered memories over and over and stood in the places that hurt and let it hurt until it stopped. They have rebuilt, and they have remembered, and they have recovered.
They will think, of course they have not forgotten. And they will think, that is why we have remained. For living, for loving; for fear, for joy; for proof.
There will be no silence in the next morning.
ending notes:
i for one am STUNNED i managed to get a halloween fic finished at all this year, not to mention in two days. very little proper editing went into this so here's hoping the theme tracks all the way, it very quickly spun into something i didn't quite expect and i just let it do that.

Year 2 Part 9- The First Vault
Hello, everyone.
There is good news! I seem to have my mojo back, that spark every writer needs to adequately make their craft. So expect updates to come a lot more often.
This chapter is the vault chapter though it will not mark the end of Year 2. For the record, I intend to write all seven years but that is going to take a hell of a long time given JC's very slow updating schedule haha.
Anyway enjoy this chapter! As always comment what you think. I enjoy it immensely.
Year 2 Part 9. The First Vault
Ben’s hopes for an uneventful end of the semester turned out to be oddly prophetic. The number of ice attacks dropped so significantly that even the first years seemed to be more relaxed going into the latter part of May and into June. Tension ran much lower and even the most brooding Slytherin or skeptical Ravenclaw had to admit things were looking up. Though Dumbledore was still noticeably absent, Professor McGonagall filled in more than adequately as deputy headmistress.
All the while, David felt…conflicted. He was certainly happy that the ice attacks had stopped, and the danger seemingly gone. But that didn’t lead him any closer to finding out what happened to his brother nor the identity of ‘R’ and what they wanted in general. Would he trade for more clues about the cursed vault just to have more information on Jacob? No, he wasn’t that selfish, unlike those such as Merula who only thought about themselves. But it didn’t ease that same longing he’d felt since he was nine years old, nor satisfy his curiosity.
Ben, of course, was ecstatic and Rowan tried to see the bright side as usual, telling him that no curse meant more time to study for their upcoming exams (whoop de doo) and reduce their chances of getting in trouble with the teachers. Bill, however, was the only one who remained unconvinced that the danger had truly passed.
“A magical cursed vault doesn’t just stop cursing people,” he explained one day while at the training grounds. “From what I’ve researched, cursed objects are often unpredictable and not at all stable due to the sheer amount of dark magic they contain.”
“Are these vaults even dark, though?” Rowan pointed out, as he fired a stinging hex towards his target. “It could just be a natural defense mechanism of someone trying to interfere with it.”
“I don’t personally trust anything that has the capacity to seriously maim or kill someone,” David opined.
Bill send a burst of flame forth, incinerating a dummy to ashes.
“If it turns out that this was nothing more than a false alarm, I won’t complain,” he said. “But until we can actually confirm that, it’s best to remain on our toes.”
And remain on their toes they did, thanks to Bill. Three times a week, they were down by the ground training and when they weren’t Rowan was often in the library searching for more books on the ancient Aramaic language they found the previous year, or anything on the vault’s origin. Penny received several new potions books from her mother and was pouring through them for more ideas or possible brews they could use in the event of an attack.
For his part, David tried to juggle the rest of his schoolwork with the vaults. His mother in particular was expecting higher marks this year and constantly reminded him of that in her letters.
Do as I say, not as I do he lamented. It was typical of his mum to offer instruction but little sympathy in doing so. If only Dad actually had a backbone. Whatever, it’s not like they’re actually here seeing what I get up to
All of these things were to bound to come to a head sooner or later and when it did, it was in the most unexpected fashion imaginable.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The day of pandemonium coincidentally was on the last Quidditch match of the season, where Gryffindor was due to play Ravenclaw for the title. The air was abuzz with excitement, and though the Slytherins were more than a bit glum at being out the running, it was expected to be an even, prime time matchup. It was not an atmosphere concerned with the cursed vaults.
That included David and Bill, who in their eager anticipation of the match, rose early and sped down to breakfast both for the purpose of eating and wishing Charlie luck. Since his first match against Slytherin, his ascent into superstardom had been rapid. The game against Hufflepuff was as equally lopsided, with Gryffindor winning 400-100 in a span of about half an hour. But it wasn’t simply the score that had the Lions on the cusp of their first cup since the late seventies, it was a generational talent and that person was Charlie Weasley. His natural ability on a broom was so spectacular, many people openly talked of him playing for England someday. True to his nature, the second eldest Weasley merely shrugged such talk off, choosing instead to focus on the Quidditch Cup but the chatter was undeniable.
“Good luck, little bro,” Bill teased him moments before heading down into the locker room. “You know Fred and George are going to want a full play by play after you win.”
“Knock it off, Bill,” Charlie said, rolling his eyes but there was a small smile on his face all the same. “Just have the butterbeer ready when we come back.”
Giving each other fist bumps, Skye Parkin called over as she tossed the quaffle back and forth between herself and fellow chaser Ruth Barrett.
“Oi, Weasley! Orion’s called us to the pitch! Let’s go!”
“She has a way with words,” Bill observed mildly.
Charlie raised his hands as he got up from the table.
“Just who she is.”
“Knock em, dead, mate. We all know you’ll be brilliant,” David encouraged, giving one last slap on the back.
The red head thanked him and quickly exited the Great Hall to the applause of the Gryffindor table, while the Ravenclaws paid them no mind.
“Gotta say, definitely different than playing Slytherin from a pregame standpoint,” David observed.
“Ravenclaws don’t need to use shady or underhanded tactics to try and intimidate opponents,” Bill pointed out. “Their talent and tactics are usually enough. Besides, their team left for the locker room already.”
“Good point.”
Checking out his watch, David began to wonder where Rowan and Ben were. Both had assured him they’d be down just after himself. Even if his best friend wasn’t the earliest riser when it came to Quidditch matches, he was usually sufficient enough to dress and shower quickly.
“Where are those guys?” he muttered to himself. The Great Hall was beginning to empty out. Even the Professors were absent from the table. Something wasn’t right.
Bill tried to reassure him in his usual cool, collected manner.
“I’m sure they’ll be along s-”
He never was able to finish the sentence as screaming and panic began to erupt from outside of the hall. Whoever was left eating breakfast immediately ran to the scene of the commotion, including the two Gryffindors. What they saw was pure pandemonium: adolescents and teenagers from all houses were running back and forth and wasn’t hard to see why. Numerous spores of ice were blooming all around them, growing at a rapid pace threatening to engulf all in their path.
David and Bill, both glanced at each other, simultaneously gulping. Suddenly, wave of blonde slammed into them.
“Ack! Penny?!”
“Dave! Bill! Oh, I’m so glad I found you,” she said through a tight hug around David’s midsection (he blushed ever so slightly). “Is this the cursed vault?”
“Has to be,” the young Gryffindor replied. “What else could be making such gigantic icebergs?”
Just then, a large mass could be seen moving towards them through the crowd and given his height advantage it wasn’t difficult to spot who it was.
“Dave? Bill? All yehs thank goodness yer alrigh’.”
“Hagrid? What on earth is going on?”
The exceedingly large man’s warm, beetle eyes were saddled with watery worry.
“The cursed ice is spreadin through all o’ Hogwarts!” he replied, nervously tapping a pink umbrella by his side. “It’s getting ter be madness out there. Gryffindor Tower is completely blocked in, the dungeons got icicles stickin out everywhere. An’ apparently the Ravenclaw Quidditch team are trapped inside the changing rooms. The blasted ice is expandin so fas’ that the Professors can’t keep up with it and there’s only so much they can do. Especially with Professor Dumbledore off searchin fer that curse-breaker.”
Hagrid paused and mumbled to himself.
“Ah, shouldn’ta said that, should not have said that.”
“What curse breaker?” David asked curiously. But the groundskeeper waved off their concerns with one of his trash can lid hands.
“Never mind tha’ now. My job is to keep you lot safe until the ice is under control. Now head back into the Grea’ Hall while I go assist Professor McGonagall.”
As he sped off, or as fast as one of his girth could go, David looked back towards his two companions, blocking out the hysteria around him.
“We have to move fast,” he told Bill and Penny. “It sounds like the ice is back with a vengeance.”
“But shouldn’t the Professors handle it?” the blonde asked, fear evident in her crystal, blue eyes.
“It sounds like they have too much on their plate in order to properly deal with the cursed ice. And this time it might not be enough to save the day,” David pointed out.
“We’re forgetting one key thing,” Bill added. “The Professors don’t even know where the origin of this ice is. They may not be able to fix it.”
“But we do. And we can,” David declared. “Bill’s right. No one besides us knows where this vault is located. It’s time for a third and final visit.”
Bill looked over his shoulder to ensure no one was listening, simultaneous worry and conflict on his handsome features. However, he also appeared resolved.
“I didn’t want to go back in there without at least four or five us just so we could have each other’s backs, but it looks like there’s no choice. The three of us will go in, break that curse, and save Hogwarts.”
David nodded in complete agreement. As much as he wanted Rowan and Ben with them, his two roommates were effectively trapped within the common room. They were the last remaining hope.
“It’s settled then. Penny, are you in?”
Though her own misgivings could still be seen in her face and body posture, Penny didn’t hesitate in her answer.
“Absolutely. I told you David that the next time something like this happens to involve me. Well, you’re going to keep that promise whether you like it or not.”
She truly is the most loyal Hufflepuff I’ve ever seen
“You’re amazing, Penny. Alright let’s go!”
And without so much as a second thought, the three teens took off running towards the thirteenth corridor.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It didn’t take long to reach the corridor nor for David to reveal the hidden entrance. Being the third go around, he could pinpoint the spot precisely and the power of being an advanced Transfiguration student certainly didn’t hurt either.
When the eerie hallway and steps were exposed, Penny was taken aback.
“Whoa,” she uttered softly. “I’ve never seen a cursed vault before, but even this is a lot to take in at one time.”
“Stay close,” David nodded towards her. The last thing he needed was more casualties on this trip. Rowan and Bill had nearly frozen to death in each of the last instances. He would ensure nothing of the sort happened to Penny. However, her inexperience was showing already. The two Gryffindor teens already knew what to expect unlike the blonde Hufflepuff.
“Don’t worry,” he tried to reassure her. “It’s okay to be scared. We all are.”
“But it always helps to have a bit background. Especially for someone who’s never seen all of this macabre rubbish,” Bill joked.
Penny gave a frail smile, nevertheless she remained quite frightened of the ominous knights and ancient statues that surrounded them.
“What should I expect?” she asked bravely.
“If memory serves correctly, there will be a chamber with a massive door of ice in front of us, guarded by a giant shield shaped like a snowflake,” Bill explained to her.
“You’re taking the mickey, right?”
David resisted the urge to laugh despite the seriousness of the situation.
“It sounds pretty unbelievable but trust me, Penny. We’re not lying.”
As if to prove his point they came across the same giant wall of ice that stood against their path to the doors, twice as thick and formidable as before.
“Well…this is a problem,” David observed. “Will the knockback jinx be enough, Bill?”
“It’s our only hope, mate,” Bill told him, pulling out his wand. “If we hit it at the same time, it should be enough to create a big enough entry way for us to fit through.”
The two second years copied the older boy and prepared to fire.
“Give it all you got, Penny,” David told her, giving a look of encouragement. “Whatever ounce of power you think you have….summon every ounce of it.
I’m going to need it too
“On the count of three,” Bill announced and Penny’s normally cute, bubbly features took on an uncharacteristic degree of determination. “One….two….THREE!”
“Flipendo!”
Beams of blue light struck the ice with a tremendous force but to their dismay, only a slight dent was made, indicating the defenses were much stronger than originally thought of.
“Try it again. One…two…THREE!”
“Flipendo!”
This time a small hole was made through the ice, but it was barely big enough for a man to go ice fishing.
“One more,” Bill breathed heavily. “We can do this. On my count…one…two…THREE!”
This time, their efforted yielded paydirt as the combined power of their spells blasted the ice apart, leaving a man sized opening just big enough for them duck through.
“When you get inside, spread out and be ready when the door starts blasting its freezing charms,” the eldest Weasley informed them. “Penny, you remember the fire spell, yeah?”
“Incendio, right?”
“That’s the one. As soon as you get close enough to it, blast it with all your power.”
David nodded in affirmation. There was no time to think or get fancy, the only objective was to get past that door and ensure that this curse was broken once and for all. As for what came after….they could deal with that later.
Sure, enough as they entered the icy chamber and drew close, the snowflake shield began firing off freezing curses, causing the three teens to roll off to one side in order to avoid them.
“I see what you mean!” Penny yelled, drawing her wand. “Also, really wish I’d worn something other than a skirt had I known we’d literally be going into a cursed vault!”
David fired a knockback jinx to buy them some time, but their offensive nearly stalled as a freezing spell nearly hit Bill, causing him to slip forward on the slick, unstable surface.
“That was too close,” he muttered. “Alright, after the next curse it shoots off, fire away with everything you got.”
David drew his own wand and aimed carefully, shrinking low on the steps, concentrating all of his magic into the biggest inferno ball he could imagine in his head. By the hardened look on Penny’s face, she was evidently doing the same. As soon as the next freezing spell (aimed for Bill again) passed, he and the Hufflepuff were on their feet charging the door.
“INCENDIO!!” they roared simultaneously.
With their combined strength, huge plumes of fire issued forth and made contact with the shield attached the door. Through the heat and acrid smoke, David could see that the icy fortification was melting into a pool of water onto the floor. By the time the fire barrage ended, it was completely gone.
“YES!” he exclaimed. “We finally got rid of that bloody thing.”
The group barely had time to celebrate however as ominous rumbling could be heard from inside of the door, the ground quaking as though a giant were approaching.
“I don’t like the sound of that,” Penny stated, anxiety back on her face.
“I just realized, David,” Bill said turning to him. “All this time we thought this door was keeping us out of the vault…but what if it was keeping something IN?”
It was a consideration they had no time to discuss more for at that moment, as the massive doors opened to reveal a terrifying sight: an Ice Knight, made of iron but covered completely in chunks of snow and frost, about ten feet tall carrying a massive sword. It did not look pleased at their intrusion.
“Merlin’s Beard,” Bill breathed. “Everyone, take cover!!”
But he was too late. The knight struck out with his sword creating an icy wind so fierce, so deathly cold that one could not stand against it without plunging into a winter induced coma. In a quick succession, Bill’s body was quickly entrapped in ice as was Penny’s. Fortunately for David, he had managed to jump out of the way in time, all except his foot, which he managed to free.
“Blasted thing…” he muttered, ripping his foot away and breaking the containment. He ignored the rising chill in his bones as he saw his two friends stuck in blocks of ice so thick, it was a wonder they could move at all. Both of their faces were already turning blue.
“L-look out!” Bill warned threw chattered teeth as the knight swung his blade once more.
Again, David had to dive out of the away to avoid getting caught in the same prison. Wheeling around, he aimed his wand and issued out another fire blast. It caught the knight square in the chest, causing it to reel back but otherwise had no effect.
“Uh oh.”
For the third time, he avoided a blizzard blast but only just barely. There was no telling how long he could keep this up. Not to mention the health and safety of his friends were increasingly in jeopardy. He wasn’t going to win by simply dodging the strikes.
“D-D-Dave,” Penny managed to utter out. “C-c-come here. Reach into m-m-my j-j-jumper pocket.”
He did not argue, running over to her and doing as instructed. Within seconds, a bottle of green potion was in his hand.
“It’s f-f-fire breathing p-p-potion. I know i-i-it’s risky b-b-but it might be our only h-h-hope.”
“S-s-she’s right!” Bill called out in agreement. “You h-h-have to use it n-n-now!”
In a split second David managed to consider the options: fire breathing potion could damage someone’s esophagus and stomach beyond repair if too much was ingested at one time. And would it be enough to actually take down their adversary? Unless…
Wait a second, I have an idea
Ducking another blast from the Ice Knight, David wasted no more time. He quickly chugged the potion, feeling its warmth rush down his throat and into the pit of his gut (it was rather like ingesting tasteless, extremely hot water). Putting his wand directly in front of his mouth, he ran up to the Knight, and knelt down on one knee.
Summoning a deep breath, David aimed straight for its midsection with only a second to spare.
“INCENDIOOOOO!!!!”
The fire breathing potion combined with the spell of his wand issued a concentrated beam of fire so powerful that it cut through the giant’s armor like a hot knife through butter, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of its body. As soon as the damage was recognized the silent knight looked down, fell to its knees before bursting into a cloud of snow and dust.
Panting heavily, David barely even registered his victory, rushing over to help Bill and Penny. Using the last of his fire breathing reserved, he managed to carefully blow a ring of fire around the ice, cracking it to the point where both could effectively free themselves.
“D-Dave, do you know what you j-just did?” Penny asked him, her pretty features in full awe.
“Careful, Penny. You’re still shivering pretty badly.”
“F-forget me, that was the m-most amazing thing I’ve ever s-seen!”
“She’s right you know,” Bill concurred. His body still quaked as well but his larger size and body mass ensured he did not feel the effects quite as badly. “Dave, I’ve never seen a second year do that before. You just took down something ancient, something way beyond what most wizards have ever seen.”
It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate the compliments, but David had seen this story before. Rowan and Bill each required sufficient time to recover from the door blasts and the knight’s power was far stronger than that. They needed to get to the hospital wing.
“Guys, let’s go see Madam Pomfrey before you freeze to death, come on-”
“Not before you enter that vault,” Bill cut him off.
“Forget the vault,” David insisted, supporting Penny with his own body weight. “We need to leave this place.”
“Leave after everything we did to open the bloody door?” Bill barked out with a laughter. “Not likely. David we’ll be fine. This is what you wanted: the first step in finding the answers about your brother. Go, I can take care of Penny.”
Before he could protest, the blonde placed a soft, feminine hand over his mouth.
“Hush,” she said with a smile. “B-Bill’s right, we’re b-both okay.”
Swallowing, but also nodding his head, David acquiesced to their insistence. He didn’t like the idea of leaving them behind whilst they were still in considerable trouble, but curiosity and desire overrode his fear. Any immediate threat was gone now. It was time to see just what was behind those frozen doors.
“Together,” he said to them. “All three of us.”
His friends smiled at him.
“If you insist, David.”
And just as he insisted, the three friends stepped inside the doors into the unknown.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
In contrast to the snowy, ice cream covered walls of the chamber outside, the inside of the vault was quite similar to the hallway in its décor and decoration. It was also considerably warmer. Inside was a dark, copper green colored room lined with four different knight statues, all resembling the one they had just fought. In the center was a lit column, situated upon a stone pillar, lit by a soft, yellowish glow the emanated from the inside. Upon the column, was an ancient language, the same that Rowan translated a year earlier.
“Unbelievable,” Penny breathed out.
“There is definitely something to this column here,” Bill said, rubbing his chin.
“Perhaps it has something inside?” David suggested to which eldest Weasley shrugged.
“Only one way to find out, mate. You can do the honors.”
The second year Gryffindor didn’t hesitate. Foolish as it may seem to touch a mysterious magical object of unknown origin and power, the nagging desire was too much to resist for him. He didn’t know what to expect really, if anything at all. However, a curious thing occurred upon his finger resting on the column. It began to shift and unfold as though it were a flower in bloom. What lay inside was odder still. They seemed to be hovering in midair in a yellowish mist.
“A broken wand and a book? Not exactly the treasure I was hoping for,” Bill observed.
“Who knows? Maybe their clues,” David countered. And before he could stop himself he reached inside and attempted to take the two objects. Upon doing so, a familiar voice began echoing loudly inside his head.
Find the other four vaults, David….Find my room…
Could it be…Jacob?
“Find your room?” he asked the voice aloud. “I don’t understand.”
You can’t let ‘her’ get there first! Hurry!
“Who’s her?” he asked again. “What do you mean?”
Just then he was pulled back from the center of the column by Bill.
“Dave! Snap out of it!”
“Wha?”
Bill looked at Penny and back to him, his expression confused and concerned.
“You were in some kind of trance. You kept talking to someone lime if they were in the room with us.”
“I…heard a voice,” David admitted, not knowing what else to say.
“Who?”
“My brother….told me to keep finding the other vaults. You must think I’m mad, don’t you?”
They must think I’m off my rocker. I don’t blame them either
To his surprise, neither Penny nor Bill seemed to regard him as a madman waiting to go to the looney bin.
“For what it’s worth, I believe you, Dave,” Penny spoke up.
“So do I. I could believe anything after what we just went through,” Bill agreed.
“Did he say anything specific?”
David regained his senses and analyzed the situation for a moment. How was it possible that he had just heard his brother? Even in the wizarding world, witnessing voices that weren’t there was not a good sign and yet he couldn’t shake the feeling what he heard was not the work of insanity.
“He told me to locate his room and that there are four more vaults, specifically. And to find them before ‘her’. Whoever that is.”
“Her?” Penny repeated. “This just keeps on getting weirder.”
“I concur,” Bill said. “But what about the wand and book?”
David inched closer once more and took both of the objects without further visitation from the voice. Upon inspection, he recognized the wand’s true owner.
“This is Jacob’s wand. The one he had while at Hogwarts. I’d know it anywhere.”
Bill took the leather bound journal from him and began flipping the pages, his eyebrows furrowed in befuddlement.
“This book, whoever it belonged to, is nothing but scribbles and random drawings. It appears the author was quite mad.”
“Could it be a clue to the location of the next vault?” Penny asked.
David didn’t know what to think. Far from answering questions, their journey and entry to the vault seemed to invite more questions, thickening this mystery even further. The quest to find his brother now took on a whole new meaning.
“I have no idea,” Bill said quietly after a moment of pondering. “But what I do know is that we need to get out of here before we get caught.”
Snapping back to his senses, the second year almost forgot how long they had been in here. It was long past overdue for their departure.
“Bill’s right. We don’t want to find any of the teachers waiting for us by the time we get back. It’s time to go.”
“Do you think that we stopped the cursed ice for good?” Penny wondered aloud. “I hope no one got hurt.”
It was a sentiment they all shared but one they had no way of knowing until they returned back to the halls of Hogwarts. With enough adventure completed for one day, the trio made their way out of the vault and into the thirteenth corridor.

bone-deep desire | bentley & ariana.
date: february 2020 summary: ben and ariana catch up after the bonfire
Even with how things had been going between the two, Ariana hadn't felt nervous in anticipation for hanging out with Bentley. It was only really when she saw him before her like right now, then the jittery sensation in her chest sparked up again. In the kitchen across from her, she could see how Ben stood with his familiar tall but thin frame. He hadn't been there for very long, but Ari busied herself with grabbing whatever snacks she had in her cabinets that she thought Ben would like. After bringing them over to an area she had for mostly lounging, watching movies, listening to music, but most importantly smoking and drinking. She sat down on the couch farthest away from the kitchen. They were inside of her lofty one person apartment on the top floor, so there wasn't much in the way and she could still see the kitchen if she tried. "Okay, so, we have some of your typical stoner foods, and some of my personal favorites too," She explained while talking about the Oreos, Flamin Hot Cheetos, Honey Buns, etc. She was still sitting in the spot she chose and urged Ben on over. Ariana watched his dark eyes and the way he carried himself, it was almost ghostly to be reminded of thousands of memories from her past that were all regarding him. Once they were sat together, Ariana retrieved her weed stuff which consisted of a few lighters, a herb grinder, a small selection of flavored rolling papers, close to a quarter of bud which didn't include a few blunts she had already pre-rolled before Ben showed up. She picked up one of the blunts and inspected it. "I guess if we start smoking now, we'll be high as hell in no time," She passed it over to Ben; along with a lighter. "—Light one up for us, and I'll grab us some drinks too?" She casually asked, never being one to show her weaker sides and, unfortunately for Ariana, vulnerability was never her forte.
She seemed to be trying very, very hard to make him feel welcome. Which, weirdly, made it harder for Ben to get comfortable. He sat down on the floor, looking at the spread of food out before him. A blunt was placed into his hand, which he inspected as he accepted the lighter as well. He nodded, glad that she was offering drinks instead of him having to ask for one. She would probably be insulted if he said that he needed one to relax. "That sounds great," he said, trying to match her energy, but missing the mark. Without any more fanfare, he lit up the blunt, listening to the sizzle as he pulled. Her stuff was always stronger than his, and no matter how many times he smoked with her, he was caught off guard. Ben started coughing, laughing between little hits on his chest. By the time Ariana returned with drinks, the tension was already melting off his shoulders. "Every time," he said, chuckling. "I swear I can handle my weed."
Maybe Ariana was trying an unusual amount, but it was Ben and if anyone deserved anything from her — it was him. She could hear the lighter flicker and then she listened to Ben's coughs which brought a look of amusement over her expression and subtly calmed her nerves. By the time she was sitting back down next to him with drinks, it was her hit on the blunt and she did so. She held it in her lungs, but was smirking at him as she exhaled it. "Oh, I know you can handle it," Ariana pointed out and ashed what they were smoking before taking another quick hit and passing it back to Ben. "It's just been a minute since you smoked with me, so there's no rush. Like I said earlier, I have nothing planned but this for tonight." There she was still trying a little too hard, but she knew him so well and hopefully, he wouldn't mind too much.
Ben took back the blunt in one hand and picked up his drink in the other. He stared at the snacks, searching for the best place to start this conversation. He wasn't even sure how much Ariana knew about the last few days. He took a deep breath, already feeling the effects of his first hit. "So, I'm assuming you heard about the bonfire the other day?" he asked, then immediately took another hit. This time he was more prepared and only coughed once on his exhale.
Ariana had heard some things here and there, but nothing was definitively spelled out for her. It was a lot of piecing narratives together from the eclectic group of people she'd talked to since the bonfire. "Uh," She paused thinking about how to answer. "Yeah... I'm not as up to date on the gossip as I once was," Ariana said in reference to who she was as a person a few years back. "But, I've heard some things." She confessed, working on drinking one of the stiff drinks she'd prepared.
This time, Ben gulped down about half his drink before he continued. He passed the blunt back to her and sighed. "I think there was another fucking spell or something because I said some shit to Chase that I didn't mean to. About Ellie and," he gestured to Ariana, "us. It just sucks that it all came out like that. What I said was true but I was, I dunno, I was trying to piss Chase off, you know? I didn't say it was you that I did something with, so I guess I did something right. Anyway. Jesse fucking Teague punched me in the face and the next day Chase basically blackmailed me into changing my work schedule and now I'm the fucked-up freak in demigodland all over again."
Ariana busied herself with the blunt all while listening to Ben's explanation of what had happened that had him so tied in knots. After hearing his suspicions about another spell being cast, she fought the urge to roll her eyes but it was a futile attempt and did so anyway. "The Hecate cabin, I'm assuming? What fucking dumbass witches..." She shook her head and took a few big gulps before hitting the blunt again. Ariana continued listening to him, letting her eyes settle gently on his frame. She sat up a bit when he disclosed to her that the fact he had cheated on Ellie was now general knowledge for those who were around at the bonfire. "I may be behind on the times, but your dislike of Chase stems from where exactly?" She realized she had reactively narrowed her eyes and made a mental note to try and soften herself again, if even possible. A sense of relief was felt though when Ariana realized her name hadn't been brought up. She scoffed anyways. "I'm sure they all assumed correct about who the other woman was." She conceded.
By then, the two were in a pattern of passing the blunt back and forth with ease. She paused, not instinctively knowing how to respond in an overtly comforting way. So, she did what she did best. "—What the fuck?" She incredulously questioned, maybe a little too amused. "I didn't even know Jesse was capable of being awake and present. He's always just half a world way. So irrelevant and useless, in my opinion..." Ariana cut her own self off as she felt her penchant for insensitivity. She inhaled and reached out and placed a hand on his closest body part which happened to be his leg. "You're not a fucking freak," Ariana spoke with a kind of firmness and knowing. "I've met freaks, all right? You're far from that," She casually explained before retracting her hand. "But, honestly, so what? If you want your original hours back, I can give you advice because you don't have to be the type of person who just takes that. Yeah, sure, in their eyes you might've made a mistake and think you deserve this shit. I don't think that, but..." She let her sentence trail off. "I still don't know what to say about what to do regarding the whole Ellie situation."
Ben sighed, letting the high carry him to someplace a little more relaxed. "I was surprised he did it, too. It was kind of funny, actually, that he finally snapped out of it and it was to beat me up." He chuckled to himself and propped his head up, elbow up on the coffee table. "I'm breaking up with Ellie. And I don't want your advice, it's— " He debated telling her about Chase's threats over Danny, and decided against it. She could get a little too protective, and he didn't want her getting involved any more than she already was. He took another hit. "It's not that big of a deal, just fucking annoying. Chase has hated me since I first got to camp, I'm not surprised he's milking this for all it's worth to make me a bad guy. Whatever, you were right, I never should have gotten involved with her." He passed the blunt back. "Go ahead and say you told me so."
Ariana wasn't equipped to give him any advice, especially regarding any of his romantic relationships, and was relieved when he made it known that wasn't what he was asking for. She sat there quietly and let him speak, oddly finding herself wanting to hear what he had to say about all of this. She only spoke up when he gave her the opportunity to rub it in his face. "I can't control what you do," She explained. "And I won't try to..." Ariana added at a quieter tone as she took the blunt back. "But, I do agree. It doesn't have to be a big deal, or as big as it sounds it was made out to be to everyone," She took a long drag and held it before exhaling it all out. "I don't know what you said exactly at the bonfire, but Chase can get fucked, along with his brother, for all I care. You don't deserve half the shit you get dealt," She confessed, taking the time to take a drink again. "And, I guess," She paused for a moment. "I'm sorry." She apologized, realizing she might not have ever said those two words to Ben.
Ben's brow pulled together; he frowned at Ariana. That was not what he was expecting from her. "Uh," he started, then cleared his throat. It was clear to him immediately that she wasn't apologizing for sleeping with him while he was still with Ellie. The words reached some little well of anger, tucked away somewhere. Ben's frown suddenly turned up into a bitter smile. "What?" he asked, forcing out a little laugh. He finished his drink and pushed the cup a bit away from him. "I think it's a little too late for an apology, Ariana."
"You're right," She said, but wanted to take it back but was also in a place where she felt as if it was the right thing to do. Nonetheless, she instantly and desperately wanted to change the subject. "Let's talk about something less ugly. Maybe focus on some of my more likeable qualities," She proposed, attempting to jest a little, but seeing that type of smile on Ben's face made her look away. She busied herself with moving things about so she could take a shot. "I just want to have a good night, okay?" She confessed before doing said shot, and offered the glass and alcohol to Ben afterward.
Something about how she completely backed off only made Ben angrier. He knew the feeling well, where he'd get so worked up over someone that every little thing they did pissed him off. But still, even though his irritation was high, he accepted the change of pace along with the alcohol. He poured himself a shot, drank it, then poured another. "What does a good night entail?" he asked, nonchalant, his words still a little blunt and the question sounding more like a challenge. He looked at her with intensity as he handed the alcohol back. He took the second shot before holding out the glass for her, too.
Ariana always somehow managed to turn situations with promise into ones that were full of awkward contempt. She kind of hated herself for doing it without realizing so often but, this was one of those times where she was actually fully conscious of her pull on the teetering atmosphere. "Well..." She said, casually watching him pour another shot for himself. "You seem to be starting it off right," She turned the corner of her lip upwards tightly. "—Thanks," Ariana commented as she took the alcohol and glass back when offered. She did exactly what he had just done and her throat burned afterwards. If her past self could see her now, would she even recognize herself? She tucked some hair behind her ear. "But, no, if I'm being serious..." She started to elaborate. "I just wanted to..." She reached for a honey bun and opened the packaging so she could begin to snack on the sugary treat. "I don't know," Finding that she couldn't finish her sentences, she shrugged. Ariana didn't really know what to say. She knew Ben so well but still it felt like they could stop being in one another's lives at the drop of a hat. "Mostly spend time with you," Ariana finally confessed. "And also get fucked up too. Those were my two goals." She said, unapologetically.
Ben watched her and took the alcohol from where she left it on the table. "I'm here for getting fucked up," he said as he poured his third shot. He paused, not sure if he wanted to say more. Then he swallowed the alcohol and decided while it burned down his throat. "I missed spending time with you," he said. The sincerity threw him. Was he even being sincere? He could never tell what he wanted with Ariana, and he had a hard time figuring out what was true. He was saying this now, and it felt honest, but he was still angry. He Maybe what he missed was their fights, when they could just blurt out every mean thing they wanted, instead of sitting on years worth of tension.
But he didn't want to start one now, he realized as he went back to his original drink. He finished that off and, again, the alcohol cleared his mind. He moved closer to Ariana, working a smile onto his face. "I missed... us."
"Good," Ariana stated simply, but was a little bit relieved as well. If she hadn't cared this much about Ben, she might've not been trying so hard. But, that wasn't the case. She had to fight off the feelings of not believing he was actually saying and meaning those types of things back to her, but she somehow did and let out a tiny breath she had been holding. She had to admit that treading lightly was much more exhausting than their previous choice of explosive fights. When Ben moved closer, Ariana caught sight of the traces of a smile that was flickering on his expression. She still felt as if she was wearing heavy armor to protect herself from being hurt, but that face had such a pull on her heart. "So have I," She agreed to missing them as an us and she let her shoulders drop a little bit. She paused before scooting a bit closer too. She finished her honey bun and crumpled up the wrapper and put it aside. She realized the blunt they were smoking was done and she grabbed one of the others that was already pre-rolled and lit it up. She coughed a bit and handed it to Ben once more. "Does it still hurt much?" She asked and motioned to his bruises from the punch he received last night. "I can get you some ice, if it's still bothering you..." Ariana offered before leaning back and then just giving in and leaning a bit on Ben as well. "But, I'm sure the alcohol and weed will help shortly, right? I guess, it's the least I can do."
Ben took the blunt and let it burn in his grip as he sank into their halfway embrace. He moved so his arm was around Ariana's shoulders and he stared up at the ceiling. Finally, he took the hit and exhaled slowly. His eyes fluttered closed. "It's fine," he muttered. "Doesn't hurt that much." His head turned so he was looking at her, their faces entirely too close. "This does help, though."
"Good," Ariana said simply like she had before. When she felt Ben's arm go around her, she let herself drop more into his frame finally. She curled herself up against him and rested her head on him too. Maybe it was too greedy, so Ariana settled for levelling her breathing and glancing up at him for a moment longer. She didn't know what else to say right away so she pulled her eyes away and fully gave into using him for comfort. Her hand found a spot on his leg as she kept her other free so she could smoke. Ariana's body physically relaxed and her muscles de-tensed. The room wasn't as dark as when Ben had arrived. "Um, if you ever... do need my advice..." She trailed off and gave his leg a little squeeze with her hand as she started talking again. Ariana kept her gaze down so it was more comfortable for her, maybe for him too. "Not saying you do, but I'd give it." She confided.
He could feel every point of contact on his body, her hand and head and the brush of their fingers as he passed the joint over to her. His mind was swimming, but through the haze he could feel the bone-deep desire for her. The thing that kept bringing him back, over and over. Ben placed his hand under Ariana's chin so her face was angled up toward his. Their eyes met and, for once, Ben didn't glance away. Ellie was still gone, still clueless, and he already knew they were done. He already cheated on her, what did it matter now? Still, he paused, studying Ari's face. But it was only a pause, and after his expression softened slightly, Ben leaned in and kissed her.
Ariana wasn't expecting Ben to use his hand to take her by the chin, but she let him raise her face. Her stomach felt lighter as their eyes gazed back at one another's. It hadn't been that long since they had last been intimate and all of those memories were still very fresh which only caused even more memories to flood back as well. Ben leaned in and Ariana closed her eyes. She pressed against his lips, kissing him back maybe a bit too eagerly.
