Who had Eva's Blackmail?

Spoilers for Project: Eden's Garden chapter 1

During the first chapter, we're introduced to the Motive for the characters to begin the killing game, which are these envelopes that contain a photo and a message on the back that reveals their "worst" secret. Damon had Wolfgang's, Wolfgang had Jeans, Kai had Cassidy's, Eloise had Grace's, and Eva had Desmond's.

During the class trial, they tried repeatedly to bring up the motives but nobody ever revealed who had who's motive, or what that motive was aside from Wolfgang's. So that begs the question, who had Eva's blackmail? The person she ended up killing didn't have her blackmail, and as far as Damon is aware she was never actually approached by anyone who handed her an envelope. Meaning someone had Eva's blackmail, but then didn't give it to her.

The reason I think it's important to wonder who had Eva's blackmail is because I believe that her "secret" was something that we haven't heard before. Tozu said that all of the secrets were things that everyone had already unknowingly admitted to, and Eva's "biggest" secret (That being that she's not the Ultimate Liar, but really the Ultimate Mathlete) had been revealed to everyone all at once. This would make her envelope being the same information that everyone already knows kind of useless. (That, and Tozu wouldn't put her secret on the school tablet where everyone could just access the information, because it's supposed to be personal blackmail, if everyone can just know in an instant, it's worthless as a motive)

So Eva's secret has to be something that we don't know right now. I don't believe that Eva's secret was that she "Used to eat in the bathroom stalls" either, like some people have proposed. Because Eva told Damon that after the Motives were introduced, not before. Meaning, her secret could only be something from before the motives were introduced, which means it's something we don't know about yet.

If Eva's secret was something that was really just "lame" or embarrassing, I feel like the person who had her envelope would've followed what Wolfgang asked of everyone, which was to just give her her Blackmail. Unless, her secret was something that was really, REALLY bad. In which case, they either held onto it or showed it to Wolfgang.

The reason I think whoever had Eva's blackmail probably showed it to Wolfgang is because Wolfgang made a declaration to Desmond when they discovered that nobody's doors had locks on them. He said to Desmond to just bring any clues or suspicious things to him first next time instead of bothering everyone, and so if the person who received Eva's blackmail was really worried about it and didn't want to confront her about it, I could see them either holding onto it and keeping it a secret, or just showing Wolfgang for peace of mind.

I guess the only reason I'm so fixated on what Eva's secret was is because it could reveal more about her potential motivations. I always thought, much like Wenona pointed out, that her killing Wolfgang and framing Diana over something so frivolous as her own insecurity about her talent is a little stupid. So i just feel there has to be more to it than just that, you know? I also still think Wolfgang's actions during the whole note exchange thing are a bit suspicious in and of itself.

I do like Raverne though, I think it's got a nice fancy sound to it! (I had kinda suspected it was going to be an R instead of an L, so the fact that it's SO close to Laverne except for that is hilarious to me personally.) and Dragoneye Duke is honestly probably the best translation for his title, I wasn't envying the localizers that one. :') Baur instead of Baul I was NOT expecting, but in retrospect I think his name's supposed to be a reference to the Bauru crocodile, so that actually makes way more sense!

Gemini CollisionWorks put up a play in November, 2016 called CANT, by Ian with the collaboration of the company, almost all of whom went on to be the cast of Althaar:

Taking some elements from Sinclair Lewis's It Can't Happen Here and other 1930s prophetic jeremiads about the potential rise of fascism in the USA, it was a pretty funny comedy that was also moderately scary and very, VERY angry and mean, about the rise of a (non-Trump-like) dictator by Trump-like means, eventually breaking the fourth wall as the actors wind up rebelling again The Play Itself, which has become sentient and wants to be a nice, centrist-leftist, boulevard "political" play with actual commercial potential (maybe even a film deal), and thus inoffensive to all, as the actors try to push it to be an actual radical work of Art. They fail, of course. The House always wins.

The play opened two days after the 2016 election. On election night, we didn't rehearse, but had a party on the set with cast, family, and friends which, as the election results came in, rapidly became a stunned, sullen, drunken wake. The next day, the still shell-shocked company came together to do our dress/tech, and from then on we really bonded as we presented this Very Angry Play to exuberant, bitterly-laughing audiences. In no small way, this bonding led to Life With Althaar and the formation of our more-official group of "pinko bisexual atheist neurodivergents (and The People That Love Them)."

As B&I conceived and planned the series 2017-2018, it somewhat fell together that, while we didn't know how many seasons it would take, the show would pretty much divide into four movements:

1. Establishment of characters/location/themes

2. Ramp up to The Occupation

3. The Occupation and Resistance

4. Post-Occupation

We waited until after season 1 to decide the total number of seasons/episodes for the show, now that we had a good idea of how the episodes would be best structured, and decided on 3 seasons at that point. Then we looked at the dates where the episodes would drop in season 2 to decide where The Occupation would start. It could have been the season finale, of course, but it seemed that there would be a difference between The Plot of the show changing from Movement 2 to Movement 3 and the Emotional Arc of the series having a more major moment with the Hokey-Pokey, the Riot at the Electric Egg, and John B's huge life-change, so we made THAT the season-ender. Follow the emotion.

Also, we were pretty sure that the 2020 election would not be cleanly, immediately decided, with a real period of "what the hell is going on?" for a while after, so then, yes, we deliberately placed the start of The Occupation the same week as that election. When I wrote episode 22, I was absolutely trying to capture the dread our company had felt at the theatre as the 2016 results came in, but also keeping an eye ahead on what might happen in 2020. I was pretty sure violence would come, but not immediately, so we held off on that until episode 26 (little did we know...).

So, yes, an eye was always kept on the Real World big picture as we laid out Althaar's fictional one. I'm still a little unhappy that a specific episode that was originally to drop on November 5, 2021 didn't, as I had put together some Fugulnari-oriented rewrites of Guy Fawkes Day rhymes for that one (and we generally consider the future day each episode takes place to be the same as our current calendar). But who knows? We might wind up dropping that episode (which looks to be a two-parter now) on November 3 and 10 of this year! Perhaps the final 8 episode run of Althaar will happen from October 6, 2023 to January 5, 2024? Who knows? I'd like it to be sooner. But it's productive to have a "no-later-than" date in mind...

And pardon me for going on, but honestly, rambling about our process-stuff gets me closer and closer to having a mind in Production Mode again.

Similar to my thoughts on pandemic representation in contemporary fiction, I got strong November 2016 vibes from how Life With Althaar handled the immediate fallout from the alien coup in late season 2. I wonder how coincidental it was that they didn't put that as the season finale but the episode for election week 2020.

Something that's really helped me accept/comprehend the twist of all of the II cast being created by Mephone is that it's been part of the show for so long. The crew have been planning this reveal for ages, it wasn't just something they thought up in the past few episodes, they were thinking about this for years in advance. Brian said in the the Q&A livestream that latest this idea came into to the lore was all the way back in 2015- that's 9 whole years ago. It's existed for nearly a decade, long before I and many other people were even part of the fandom. This has always been canon. This was something constantly in the background building up over time. It's been hinted at in so many scenes and things that the characters have said, it was a subconscious truth affecting nearly every single part of the show. We just never knew, the same way the contestants never knew. Listening to the crew talk about behind the scenes production further emphasizes how much this secret meant. It was a plot point that had to be convinced to the rest of the core team when it was introduced and only a select handful people working on the show even knew about it. They told other members strictly when it was absolutely necessary, keeping this piece of lore closely guarded until it was finally time to release it to the entire community. So much work and effort has gone into setting this up and delivering it as perfectly as possible. The fandom's blown away reaction proves how well they pulled it off, all the pieces were set in place to make the reveal impact everyone to the fullest. Inanimate Insanity will never be the same for anyone watching it, but the show at it's core hasn't changed. This is how it's always been.

Thinking thoughts about Abuela being back and with this backstory about her being taken in by charlatans and Eddies whole catholic guilt thing and how the two things kind of play into one another as an exploration of faith and being taken in by something.

Abuela giving all her money to the tarot card readers etc because she was searching for something - for connection (with Abuelo) - trying to recapture what she had lost, and How Eddie has spoken about trying to re-find the magic he had with Shannon - how Eddie hasn't actually fully reconciled the Shannon of it all when it comes to relationships and how his Catholic guilt connects into that.

How Marisol as a physical representation of Catholicism is part of that narrative - how Eddie is entering a place where he has to chose his path - in order to move on from Shannon he needs to fully square the hole - catholic or non catholic. And how that needs to happen first - before he can begin his queer journey!

Jackie's death scene really has me wondering if there is something out there. Something that doesn't want them to leave. Something that's keeping the souls of everyone who dies in its space hostage. Yeah, sure, it's a hallucination--a last conscious stab of her mind screaming that something is wrong--but then why is the cabin guy there? We've been waiting for you. What if dying in that particular patch of Wilderness keeps your soul, and in so doing, powers that force?

I would love very much if the events WEREN'T supernatural, if it really was trauma, but honestly? It's being done so well so far, I would be equally as pleased to find these girls really did stumble upon some ancient god. After all, it's easy to surmise that Tai's dog sacrifice won her the election—but also, it tanks her marriage, leading her back to Van. Travis' death brings Lottie back to them. Natalie's death might cure Van’s cancer. It wants them together. It's hungry. They brought it back with them.

How much more can it consume out of those woods?

It fucks me up that we see Clark in his kid outfit and out of his glasses for the first time when he's finally being his true kryptonian/earthling self with Kara. Like i wish i could articulate this in a better way (and i probably will, later) but i think this is like the culmination of all his parts, finally being pull together taking the shape of the man he's going to become. I don't think this is going to be the last thing we're gonna see from the kryptonian vs earthling indentity debacle, but to me this is clark taking the first step into accepting all of who he is

An analysis on how Sir Pentious' character design represents his personality and development perfectly (beware of Hazbin Hotel spoilers)

Let's get this out of the way: Sir Pentious is a snake, an animal mostly known for generally believed negative traits such as poison, deceit and betrayal. We don't know WHY he's in Hell, maybe he was a "snake oil salesman" considering he comes from the Victorian times and he's into hyping up what he does, or maybe he was into war. Thing is, he's a Sinner whose design just scream "Evil".

(BTW, a snake could also represent "fertility": looking at you, Egg Boiz!)

He always had eyes all around him not just because of a stylistic choice.

Sir Pentious always felt like he was watched, and had to watch out for any danger.

"Everyone here is too nice: obviously it must be a lie! I can sense they are planning to kill me, but when?! HOW?! I must be PREPARED!"

Sadly, he's been constantly berated by other demons, far more effective in destruction, status, cruelty and charisma. Alastor won't ever bother to remember him, Cherri always ones up him, and the Vs, the ones he admires to most, won't care less about him.

To the point that Vox sent him as a spy without the intention to save him if things were going to fail. Heck, he even openly tells him to die while calling him a failure.

So of course he's got reasons to have trust issues, or taking everything so seriously, being constantly reminded of what he can't accomplish. So he puts an air of grandure that may be very flamboyant, but is VERY frail.

But, if we have to be frank here, his biggest source of insecurities... is himself.

He has eyes on his tail (his softer, more vulnerable side, which is ironically made even MORE lieable to getting hurt because of how sensitive those organs are), and inside his hood, so he could look out better for danger when on alert mode.

Heck, even the mark on his hood kinda resembles one eye.

Problem is, when you see his hood folded, when he's at ease, neutral or sad, those are not looking at outside sources.

They're looking at him, at his back. A constant stare that happens everytime he lets his guard down and shows how vulnerable he is. A gaze that can sense all of his weakness, his struggles, his insecurities.

And it's all him.

Pentious constantly believes that his inferiority complex will fade away once he'll accomplish something grand that will make others accept him. But he is his biggest critic, his worst enemy: HE is the one who believes he's a failure, that he'll never gain approval from others.

This show takes place in Hell, but this is Sir Pentious' personal Hell: insecurity born out of self hatred. Doomed to feel everyone's gaze upon him, including his own. Believing the danger to his self esteem is from others, when it's really from him.

But then he's accepted at the Hazbin Hotel: Charlie forgives him, he bonds with Angel, Husk and Niffty who don't care a bit about what he's accomplished or not, or what he's done in the past.

He feels more comfortable in showing his vulnerable side, and no one judges him for how easy it is for him to get emotional.

Of course he's still very insecure, considering how he struggles to confess to Cherri, but notice how he stops building machines or planning to attack others as soon as he starts bonding with the others: he doesn't have a reason to destroy or attack, now that he knows he's loved.

And his final design, when he goes to Heaven, shows how much he's changed, yet stayed the same. He may have died a hero, but he's still the same awkward snake we've come to love.

Speaking of love, let's talk about that!

No more eyes on his tail, now it's just on his chest (showing he's opened his heart), his glasses are now heart shaped, and even the markings inside his hood resemble kiss marks more than anything else.

And look: the mark on his hood is now heart shaped!

Why all these hearts? Why did all the eyes disappeared from his body? Even his eyes that were looking at his back?

Simple: love. Love defeated his insecurities and self hatred. He died for love.

He died protecting his friends, his new family, his new home.

He confessed and kissed Cherri knowing full well he wouldn't have made it, and yet he went anyway.

The usually cowardly and timid Pentious actually faced a great danger with courage and determination: he acted selflessly by putting himself in harm's way, he didn't steal (naturally) and by going against Adam he did indeed "stick it to the man"!

He used his weaponry knowhow and battle experience not to conquer, but to save his loved ones.

His only thought up until his demise was: "I'll go down protecting them".

And he's been rewarded not only by becoming an angel, but also being spawned directly in front of Emily and Sera, two Seraphim, the highest rank for an angel to have, who have also been depicted as snakes of fire throughout history! Sir Pentious, the lowly demon considered a failure by everyone, actually has been noticed by the Seraphim! He's come so far!

He's now come to represent the REAL symbolism of a snake: the duality of death and rebirth, transformation and immortality (ironically a reference to the fact he's been around since 1888 without ever dying from any Extermination or blessed weapons).

And isn't so poetic that a snake, the "source of the original evil", was the first sinner to ascend to Heaven? Or that this episode was released on February 1st, or National Serpent Day?

And of course, as the Bible itself says:

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."

(John 15:13)

And knowing him, I'm confident in saying he'll keep helping his friends even in his new position, like the soft hearted noodle he's always been, but was to afraid to show it up until now.

it is completely understandable to be uncomfortable with the sexual assault in dandadan. it's important to discuss how it's framed, whether it's handled poorly, or if it could be been portrayed better. but the number of people - even fans - stating that it is only fanservice, irrelevant, or could be removed is frankly bizarre to for SO many reasons, starting with the fact that this parallel exists.

the anime made it even more obvious by interpolating cuts from the first scene into the second one.

i thought this scene showed that momo gaining her powers by believing in her relationship with her grandmother gives her the strength to fight back against what is basically a horrific, much more aggressive and abstract (maybe even absurd?) representation of her shitty gross ex - who was demanding she 'put out' and pay for the love hotel in very first scene.

while the escalation from one scene to the next is surprising, it's not something that comes out of nowhere. this first scene is meant to be a set-up to what will happen later. it sets the tone, though significantly more lighthearted at this point. it tells you that sex, sexuality, etc. is something dandadan will touch on - though you don't know what the scope and depth will be until later in the chapter.

i cannot recommend this video enough, as it discusses some interesting interpretations of what the serpoians and turbo granny represent in their respective assault scenes, as well as how right now the treatment of both scenes is unfortunately uneven.

more notes about plot and thematic relevance below the cut. spoilers for anime-onlies (up to chapter 8, will probably be covered in episodes 4/5).

momo was assaulted, and almost cut up by the serpoians, much like the other victims turbo granny appeared around. this is an intentional parallel. turbo granny goes to momo because that is what she does. again, SUPER unclear how that factors into turbo granny's assault of ken, but if we keep the video's interpretation of cynicism in mind, it could be related to that; maybe turbo granny has a cynicism toward men - similar to momo in chapter/episode 1 - and this is why she chose to attack ken. unfortunately, it's still too early to really understand and explain a lot of her motivations.

again, completely understandable to not like how the sexual assault was handled or portrayed, and it's important to keep discussing it. but this is what dandadan does for many different types of trauma and difficult life experiences. this is a huge part of dandadan's identity. if you don't like it, that is fine, but calling the sexual assault 'just fan service' is blatantly untrue.
