literally it's 3am where i live and i'm on mobile but FUCK IT i haven't posted any actual writing in like a YEAR on this blog whose description include the words "I WRITE" and i can't tell if i'm even going anywhere with this so fuck it under the cut is the prospective absolute mess of the first chapter of the flipo family time loop fic. (for clarity, flipo family as in slime, mariana, and juanaflippa) this covers loop 0, aka the relevant parts of canon. words: 1630
parts of it i popped off with and other parts i hate; up to you to identify them. also the italics and other formatting got erased when i copy pasted and i'm re-adding all of it by hand so if i missed a spot, no i didn't. if i missed an accent on a letter in spanish that was a typo, if i missed a ÂĄ or Âż that may have been on purpose.
oh and for obvious reasons, content warning for mentions and mild descriptions of child death and child murder. no blood, and most of it is a three word mention; i'd say the brief paragraph beginning "TilĂn didn't scream" is most of the reason this warning exists.
Charlie Slimecicle stepped off the train.
Heâd been hoping for a bright, sunny day to start their vacation, but was sorely disappointed. The portal had apparently taken them pretty far, since theyâd gone from noon to night time. Talk about jetlag. They hadnât even been on a plane.
âWhat happened to the other guys?â he wondered aloud as he stepped onto the platform.
âYeah no clue,â Phil said, scanning the empty station. âThought theyâd meet us here.â
âGuys!â one of the Spanish speakers--Vegetta, heâd said, when theyâd all met up at the first station--called, from a lectern at the wall. âThere is a book!â
They crowded around as he read the instructions aloud--something about pressure plates, Slime wasnât paying that close of attention. He was a little more preoccupied with making sure it only felt like his brain was dripping out of his ears. That would be kind of embarrassing.
Which was not to say that he wasnât enjoying the constant onslaught of people talking over each other using words he may or may not understand. In fact, it was the opposite; he was frankly thriving in the absolute chaos that kicked back up around him as a timer appeared in the wrist communicators theyâd been provided along with their tickets.
âComo se dice âwe are going to die nowâ?â He giggled, chasing Phil and Fit to one end of the station.
âÂĄVamos a morir!â shouted Spiderman, echoed seconds later by the black bear in the collared shirt.
Giddy over the high of attempting to use his high school foreign language for the first time maybe ever, Slime absolutely didnât contribute much to solving the puzzle, and before long the sound of the timer ticking down was accompanied by a loud buzzing alarm.
âItâs been an honor!â he shrieked at the top of his lungs. âItâs been an honor!â
The bear ran past them again, shouting, âIâm going to die!â in English this time.
âAdiĂłs amigos!â Slime yelled.
The countdown ended.
And then his communicator buzzed, and there was a video playing on the screen, showing a cartoonish yellow duck in front of a blurry beach stock photo. He skimmed it absently--some generic welcoming message and another side quest for them--distracted by Maximus audibly losing his shit laughing across the station.
âCome on, Iâm trying to take a vacation, I gotta work now?â Fit complained. âThis is ridiculous.â
Slime wanted to jump on that bit, but the message cut off with coordinates marred by static and the noise of the emergency weather alert system and he lost his train of thought completely.
âI got the English book!â Spreen called, holding it with two fingers like it had personally offended him.
âEnglish leader,â Vegetta said, seeming to find that amusing.
âEnglish leader.â Spreen laughed and flicked the book away. Slime stepped back but somehow it still nailed him in the chest.
âGuess Iâm reading then,â he said cheerfully.
âIn Spanish?â Maximus said.
âUm.â
Vegetta called something, backing across the plaza with the book open in his hands. Phil backed up to the wall.
âHere,â Phil instructed, âweâll read it here.â
âOkay okay.â He flicked it open. âSo we have to get water wheel planks--â
Their peace lasted a grand total of thirty seconds as voices suddenly began shouting, overlapping in chaotic chorus.
âWhat is that?â Fit demanded.
âIs that coming from the other side?â Phil stared up at the top of the wall.
âThis is the thinnest thick wall Iâve ever seen,â Slime said, giddy laughter bubbling out of him again. âIs this thing made out of pencil shavings? If I sneeze on it, is there gonna be a hole?â
âNevermind, weâll read it over here.â Phil dragged them away again, but the Spanish speakers were dispersing into the trees.
âForget the book,â Fit said, âfollow them!â
(In the end it was explosives that took the wall down, which in hindsight was a precursor to how a not insignificant portion of time on the island was spent. The first day, however, it was just funny, much like everything else.)
(That was to say, the first first day.)
The communicator had indicated that today there was something special planned, so he made an extra effort to wake up.
âMorning Jaiden!â he called to his upstairs neighbor.
âHi Charlie!â He could hear her farming through the wall. âGlad you woke up on time!â
âWell you know, you know, El Backflipo couldnât miss it,â he joked, sifting through his backpack. âGot any spare food? Iâll trade you uno backflipo.â
âI have so much toast, come here and get some, free of charge.â
With a quick backflip and some toast to start the day, he popped open the map.
âThereâs a lot of people down the wall,â he noted, their green dots so clustered they formed one. âWanna check it out?â
âYeah sure.â Jaiden tossed some seeds into a chest. âDo you know what this eventâs gonna be?â
âI have no idea,â he admitted cheerfully.
She laughed. âYeah, me neither. I guess thereâs an egg involved, but thatâs all I know.â
He dug around in his backpack for a paraglider, nodding along. âYeah, yeah, un huevo, I get you.â Shuffling the landmine from Vegetta to one side, he yanked out his glider and threw himself out her window. âLetâs go!â
(nothing like getting struck by lightning to wake a guy up in the morning)
Slime fiddled with the communicator as he waited for the line of people to get through the ticket machine; he already had his own, a nice B for Backflipo. The new live translations still boggled his mind. He had to fight the urge to chant weird shit under his breath, just to see what the bubbles would say.
He paid a little extra attention when Mariana walked up to the machine. That guy seemed cool. Theyâd done that pequeĂąo dormir together on day one, and he had a good sense of humor. Egg parenting would probably be funny.
He was thrilled to see the B for Backflipo on the ticket Mariana stepped away with, even if Mariana was decidedly less so. This was gonna be good.
(it was, and it wasnât)
So, Mariana wasnât exactly the coparent of dreams. Then again, Slime was pretty sure Mariana could say the same about him. In fact he was pretty sure Mariana had said the same, but in Spanish, when he wasnât checking the translation.
It was great. They thought theyâd killed a child immediately and then decided to fake their own childâs death to get away with it, and then confessed their sins to a bilingual angel and built a farm and then he buried himself beneath an improvised cross and went into a coma until his sins were forgiven, or something, except his sins werenât forgiven in time to save his own childâs life.
And then Juanaflippa was dead. Dead at Marianaâs hand.
His bitch wife killed their daughter.
(Everything went faster, after that.)
Slime wanted to kill him.
Slime wanted to kill him for killing their fucking daughter, but of course, Mariana couldnât even be bothered to be around to take care of her alive, never mind to pay for his crimes when she died by his hand!
(in a better world, his rage started and ended there. in a better world, the anger fizzled out with the lack of a target.
this was not that world)
There couldnât be an Egg Event with no eggs.
If he killed them all, it would bring her back.
(in a worse world, he succeeded. in a worse world, the Egg Event ended there.
this was not that world)
They held a trial.
If he won, it would bring her back.
(in another world, he didnât convince them. in another world, they left his daughter in Hell.
this was not that world)
TilĂn was still before she hit the ground.
TilĂn didnât scream. Maybe they didnât have time. It happened so fast. He was sure it happened fast. Almost too fast. But everything went so fast, now, even though Flippa was back. Yet, time slowed down for this, like a rubberneck driving past a highway accident, watching him desperately trying to shock their heart back into motion.
âYOU KILL MY BEST FRIENDS,â Flippa wrote. He begged her to understand. She wrote, âi canât believe it.â
She wrote, âI HATE YOU.â
(in a better world, the error would have been caught in April instead of July.
this was not that world)
His daughter fell to his bitch wifeâs sword. The same way. The next day.
Theyâd only just gotten her back. And Mariana killed her again.
He only left eggxile for the funeral. She wouldnât stay dead, but he had to be there.
Time went even faster after that. He was Gegg, or maybe Gegg was him, or maybe Gegg was Gegg, or maybe. . . ?
He went back to eggxile.
He wasnât leaving without them. TilĂn. Juanaflippa. He would do whatever was necessary. He would pray to any higher power. Lil J still owed him a goddamn favor, but the guy wouldnât pick up his calls. Maybe if he put more shit in the shrine; angels liked shiny shit, didnât they? He went back to the mine, where the gasses swirled in his head. He built the shrine. He mined. He built the shrine.
He went back to the mine.
He went back to the mine.
He went back to the mine.
âThis is where I sit, this is where my bitch wife sits, and this is where my daughter sits, if I had one!â
Heâd said that before. No he hadnât. Yes he had.
No, he just needed to clear his head.
Charlie Slimecicle went back to the mine.
Charlie Slimecicle stepped off the train.

I think one of my least favorite takes on Optimus annexing Earth is the surprisingly common opinion "he should've just left Earth alone and minded his own business because they didn't ask for help," not because it doesn't have truth in it but because it's a massive oversimplification of the whole situation and seems to pretend that Optimus annexing Earth was just completely stupid and had no reasoning whatsoever.
Like, it just bothers me when people talk about it as if Optimus leaving Earth alone would've been the not-bad-guy thing to do despite the fact that the Decepticons were literally about to try colonizing Earth again under the command of a guy who was literally from the Golden Age generation that made colonizing and genociding organics popular, Galvatron. I mean Galvatron was literally there saying "so when are we going to kill these fleshlings" and even being a Functionist asshole to Soundwave's cassettes. The last time the Decepticons invaded Earth in All Hail Megatron they killed literally a billion human beings. Are there seriously people in this fandom that are out there believing with their whole ass that "Optimus should've just ignored the openly genocidal Decepticons returning to a place they had already tried to colonize just a few years ago because it's none of his business and the humans can handle themselves" like what.
#squiggposting#and this isn't even getting into the fact that like there was that one titan buried under earth's surface#or the enigma of combination being there#are we not going to talk about how bad of an idea it is for cybertronian technology to just be left in the hands of other civilizations#with no supervision or input from cybertron whatsoever#there was an entire fucking tyrest accord made specifically to ban cybertronians from sharing their tech with other races#which megatron broke btw when he spread mind controlling guns across earth specifically to cause chaos#like i'm not saying that the sentiment of 'they didn't ask for help to be forced upon them' isn't valid#but i feel like saying 'lol optimus should've just not gotten involved' is incredibly naive at best and stupid at worst#ppl will be like 'noooo idw op is evil because he annexed earth he's not a real OP he's shittily written'#bro optimus was following one of his most core personality traits which is trying to protect innocent lives#from the imperialistic factions of his own species. the fuck do you people mean that idw op sucks#is it bc one of his positive character traits was turned into a double edged sword that also makes him flawed and make mistakes#and you just wanted OP to be your unproblematic g1 daddy who never does anything wrong?#i need to do a reread of barber's side of phase 2 to cement my opinion and remember the exact sequence of events#but mfs act as if optimus doing that had no reasons behind it whatsoever and as if he had any good choices in that scenario#(then there is the sub faction of idw op haters who kiss idw megs' ass simultaneously but that's a rant for another day lol)#mostly what gets me isn't the fact that people don't like optimus' decision#but the fact that so many ppl completely disregard and refuse to consider the context around that decision#and they just go 'oh he just sucks' as if that's the end of the story lol

Sorry for posting notes but it's actually worth mentioning that taxonomy is a predecessor for determining how different creatures are related based on shared physical characteristics but, importantly, doesn't presume evolutionary mechanism in the same way that phylogeny- that is, basing the connections between animals on the percentage of shared genome data- does.
Phylogeny has 0 concern for shared physical characteristics- a hyrax and a whale are more closely related than a whale and a shark, for instance, despite the shared body plan and lifestyles of sharks and whales and the completely unrelated body plans of hyraxes and whales.
Also phylogenetically -fish don't exist as a group -lobe-finned fish encompasses all land animals -sharks and ray-finned fish are more distinct than any land animal is from another -trees don't exist as a group -birds are dinosaurs, which are reptiles, which are amphibians.
and other fun oddities of biology.
which of my household appliances am i most closely related to
#they're often taught together but they're different systems with different assumptions and approaches#technically speaking phylogeny doesn't even group things by shared genetic code but is instead the study of evolution through the assumptio#that evolution occurs primarily through changes to DNA sequences over time#which all evidence does support#to be clear#but that is still a core assumption that phylogeny makes#while taxonomy makes the assumption that similar things are related#which is often but not always correct#Like the tree thing#like conceptually we all understand what a tree is#but they aren't like...#related#they're really different plants that have really different evolutionary histories#and convergently evolved to be tall and woody#and even that barely counts as convergent evolution when they're just#so distinct in basically every way outside of an incredibly vague âshapeâ#even though if you asked anyone on the street whether or not something was a tree they'd answer pretty quick#but when you want to actualy genetically classify them it turns out that they're just....#isn't a unified âtreeâ branch of the tree of life#also I love that we call it the tree of life then always draw it as a circle#like commit to the bit#make it a tree#make it like a big funnel instead of just making it a circle#like I get that it's a circle cause life diversified to an absurd extent#but like#call it idk the circle of life#wait that's already taken#okay I guess tree can stay#even if we can't define a tree

âď¸Mild arcane spoilers âď¸
Miiight ruffle some feathers.
Not EVEN going to lie, unnecessary ship wars aside, the fan base has developed such a deep love and understanding for these characters (because letâs be honest, there are some pretty intelligent people giving eye opening analyses) that after the finale, it appears that we have a better understanding of them than the actual writers.
We deserved better as the audience after all the hype over the years, all the waiting, even after some episodes got leaked a while ago, most of us remained respectful and waited to see what this season would bring us. The core characters ABSOLUTELY deserved better as well.
It felt as if I was watching all of the charactersâ development be erased in real time, or become sidelined and nearly mute after being propped up to appear as if they were going to have a significant arc.
With the amount of episodes we had, it felt like they were trying to cram a bunch of different storylines into one 9 episode season and that left us with annoying plot holes and rushed sequences.
And Iâm just gonna say it.
If a certain relationship needed to be sacrificed if it meant that other characters had the proper development they needed and DESERVED, then I would have preferred that much, MUCH more than that undercooked finale.
Donât. Even. Get me started on that caitvi scene. In the cell? Right after that conversation she had with her sister? Donât give me that nonsense about how itâs vi reclaiming her power or something. (An actual weird ass statement from Amanda Overton in a Q&A video about how that was Vi reclaiming and working through her trauma in that cell).
No apology? No groveling for forgiveness? That little argument they had lasted like five seconds and didnât even address the earlier conflict that happened in the show after cait left vi. And before any of you say âcait apologized with her actionsâ
I donât care. Two things can be true at once, she can and should have apologized directly as well as displayed that with her actions.
Moving on to Mel??? We did not nearly have enough time to explore her new abilities as a mage, her armor, and her connection to the black rose. As I said, the storylines this season should have been more refined so we could focus on a central group of characters. They did nothing but hint at her armor from the end of season 1 all the way up until now.
Also maybe Iâm hallucinating, but did we ever find out what happened to the firelightâs tree?? Thatâs one of the main reasons Ekko and Heimerdinger went to the lab isnât it? HELLO?
Next on my list, Jinx. This girl has suffered to no end.
- Lost her whole family except for Vi.
- Almost died once and was brought back to life.
- Tried to end her life several more times
And you slap us all in the face by writing her off?
âOh but she may not be GONE gone, look at the glitching at the end!"
I. Donât. Care. Itâs the principle.
Iâm sick and tired of seeing characters that struggle with mental health and keep having one bad event after another happen to them, never receiving a proper ending. What messages are the writers sending with this? That death is basically the answer because thereâs no hope for them? Cool. That was not an honorable act of self sacrifice, that was plain insulting.
Instead, if they still really wanted to have a Jinx redemption arc and a chance to rekindle her relationship with Vi, having her tap into engineering for the betterment of Zaun would have been the better route.
We should have gotten an extra extended episode since this is last season for the Piltover/Zaun region, and for Jinx and Vi's story. I really want to blame Riot for being greedy and possibly becoming too cocky with the popularity of Arcane that they think anything would suffice because It's Arcane.

Alright, not to be too predictable, but I wanna talk about space and color as it's used in the intro to episode 1 for a minute. And you know, show some gorgeous space shots.
So we open in the dark. There's distant lights and the occasional flare from them moving through space but for the most part we get the angel that would eventually become Crowley alone in enough darkness that he himself isn't even giving off particularly significant amounts of light.
But then, enter Aziraphale. He arrives in a big ball of blue light shining above him that really emphasizes Crowley's red hair. They get tied to the colors we most often see them attached to, especially in promotional materials.
From here the entire scene gets slightly brighter, even once Aziraphale's light dims down. They're both lit up once they're together, even it the middle of literal nothingness.
They start the universe next, using Crowley's hand crank, which gives off a magic that's a combination of their two colors - purple.
A very similar color to this shows up in heaven as a signal flare for their accidentally too powerful half a miracle. It's a color tied to a miracle so big it could've revived someone 25 times and also a miracle that got the engine of the universe running.
And then. Creation starts. Our first image is a very Heavenly aesthetic. It's a blueish light cutting through the clouds much like Az just cut through the dark.
And what explodes from that is the thing that set me down this little rabbit hole in the first place: it's purple scattered through with red and blue lights.
As the initial burst fades, the blue and the red separate, the color fading except for this tiny blue dot and this growing red zone on the right.
The blue then fades, leaving us with an extremely Crowley coded palette here and a very orangeish red. There's shades of gray, a little bit of light, but not nearly as much color. As the sequence moves the darkness grows but does start slowly filling with small points of light.
We then end up with shades of gray both light and dark. There's balance here, even if it's not particularly colorful.
And then all at once a pinkish red bursts forth with these intense clawing tendrils. At the core of it, from the heart of it, is a bright blue ball of light.
It fades into a blue heart surrounded by darkness with whisps of white resembling a certain someone's hair. Or, as some friends pointed out two people embracing.
As the nebula settles a few other colors set in but the primary scheme is still red and blue. An almost violent plume of red emerges on the left side of the image.
And from this moment on most shots of the two of them back them with their respective color schemes.
They chat and Aziraphale gets anxious. He looks for a distraction and is immediately drawn to the space where the colors mix.
And as we fade out the other colors in the picture fade. We get the most balanced blue and red get. And on the far corners fairly clear dark and light.
So what does this mean? The purple speaks to them being very powerful together. And, the rest is arguably just representative of the plot. We have Aziraphale as a beacon in the dark - a signal flare we know Crowley has throughout history been aware of and drawn to. We have them brightening each other. We have Az's color breaking out of heaven to mix with Crowley's to create something new and wonderful and powerful. Aziraphale's color fades, leaving Crowley alone. We then get a burst of a red closer to Crowley's current hair, with Aziraphale's blue in the core of it that eventually becomes a blue heart surrounded by darkness. That too fades, replaced by the pillars becoming their familiar hand shape and slightly more colors seeping in. As they talk together and move closer together their own colors settle back in and come to balance.

đźynopsis. a sequence of events from your and jakeâs senior year
ęŁŕ§ đśđ¨đŤđ§đ˘đ§đ đŹ
01. new hair
itâs the first day of the new school year. youâre tired but less than what youâve been in previous years.
this year, you can finally say goodbye to the early bus rides and even longer rides home.
your neighbor, sim jaeyun, has a car and parking and is willing to bring you to and from. youâve never been so thankful for the blonde boy.
blonde? more like brunette boy now.
âyou dyed your hair back?â you say as you walk up to the driverâs side of the car, he rolls down the window.
âyeah,â jake nodded. âwhat do you think?â
âit looks goodâŚâ you admire his new hair color and cut. âstill a little dead though,â you reach through the window to touch his hair. his hair is still soft but thereâs a hint of frailness from the rounds of bleach heâs been doing for nearly a year.
âmaybe you could use that hair mask you always use on me?â he suggests.
âmaybe.â
02. amusement park
this is the first and last time you will ever skip school. especially with sim jaeyun.
itâs his idea to ditch school and drive to the nearest amusement park, two hours away from your town.
âcome on ____ie,â jake says as you buckle your seatbelt. âitâs SAT day for the juniors⌠we wonât be missing anything!â
âstill! our parents are going to be called!â you argue.
âif they get mad at you, iâll deal with them,â jake reassures you, putting a hand on your headrest while reversing out of your driveway. âthe tickets are on me.â
âtickets?â you raise an eyebrow.
you and jake spend the whole day until sundown at the amusement park.
once you finally accept the fact you should be more laid back for senior year, you drag him from ride to ride. despite him being scared shitless of roller coasters he goes on them with you since he knows how badly you want to ride them.
the only condition is that he gets to hold your hand if he gets scared. which is inevitably the whole day, which he gets to use the excuse to hold your hand in queues.
he also holds your hand while walking around the park with the excuse of not wanting to lose you in the crowd.
as if there are a bunch of people on a random weekday. the only âcrowdâ is just the families with children no older than five.
the only thing jake can confidently do is get you a giant plushie at one of the scam-like carnival game stands. which he carries around for the remainder of the day.
you hate to admit it but skipping was a good idea even though when you two return home both sets of your parents are waiting furiously on your front porch.
âit was my idea,â jake takes the blame as you peek out from behind him, holding his hand for comfort.
you both get grounded for a week and are forced to take the bus to and from school. that didnât matter though because you both had fun that day.
03. sick day
one morning jake is surprised to see that when he pulls into your driveway that you arenât waiting for him.
youâre so punctual and on time so it makes him worried. but he gives you the benefit of the doubt and sits in his car for ten minutes. maybe you're just running a little late.
when you donât respond to his texts jake becomes more worried. he caves, gets out of his car, walks up your front steps, and rings the doorbell.
when you come to the door with messy hair and a pale face jake can already sense youâre sick and miserable.
âwoah, are you okay?â
âsorry for not texting,â you sneeze. âiâm staying home today.â
âare your parents home?â jake asks, looking around your house behind you.
âno,â you yawn, rubbing your eyes.
âlet me in.â
âbut school starts in twenty, youâll be late,â you try to push him out the door, though heâs stronger than you.
âlet me take care of you,â he wraps his arms around your waist and carries you upstairs towards your room.
jake spends the day in your room giving you medicine, soup, and under the covers next to you. making sure heâs with you as you rest incase you need anything. not letting you get up at all unless you really must.
your parents come home to you and jake cuddled up on the couch.
to no one's surprise, your parents call jakeâs parents and inform them about their son's whereabouts for the day.
jake does not get grounded for skipping that time.
ęŁŕ§ đŞđđđđŤ đŹđđĄđ¨đ¨đĽ
01. after school nap
after a long day of test after test, each teacher trying to get one in before winter break, youâre exhausted.
walking up to jakeâs car with dark circles and messy braids. ready to go home and crash on your bed to start your week-long break.
the frigid weather has you shivering as you approach the vehicle. your nose and cheeks flushed red from the cold.
âcold outside?â jake asks as you quickly shut the door and sink into the passengerâs seat. his car had been running for a couple of minutes now as he got let out early by his teacher.
âsuper,â you yawn, snuggling into your jacket.
the car is taken over by a comfortable silence. the only noises being the car engine and the wind outside. keeping his eyes on the road jake asks you a question.
âhow were your tests?â he asks while turning the corner.
he gets no response, at the red light he glances over to see you sleeping soundly in the seat next to him.
when arriving at your house jake decides that you look too adorable and comfortable to wake you up just yet. he knows youâve been studying hard the past week and barely sleeping. ten minutes is what he tells himself, heâll wake you up in ten minutes.
ten minutes later jake has also fallen asleep.
you both nap in the heated car for god knows how long. then when a continuous taps on the window register in jakeâs brain he opens his eyes to see it is already dark out. the digital clock reads three-quarters past five.
your mom is currently knocking on the driverâs side window.
âhi jaeyun,â she greets when he rolls down the window. âi think you two have been sleeping for too long.â
âyeah, iâm so sorry!â he apologizes. âi guess i fell asleep while i was waiting for her to wake up.â
âthatâs alright,â your mother smiles at him. âjust making sure you werenât doing anything else in here!â
jake canât help the heat creeping up his neck in embarrassment at the suggestion you two were doing something other than sleeping.
âhow about you join us for dinner tonight!â
âiâd love to,â jake scratches the back of his neck. âiâll bring her inside.â he looks over at your peaceful expression wondering how you didnât wake up in the past couple of minutes.
02. passenger princess
âget out,â jake says when sunghoon climbs into the passengerâs seat of his car.
âwhat do you mean?â sunghoon replies, furrowing his bushy eyebrows. âyou said youâre taking me home!â
âi am!â the australian boy retorts. âbut you have to sit in the back.â
âwhy!â the younger boy whines, crossing his arms childishly.
âbecause the front seat is for ____,â jake explains, unlocking the door so sunghoon can exit.
ânot fair,â sunghoon groans. âlast time i checked she didnât call shotgun.â
âwell, she always sits next to me-â heâs cut off by the back door opening and you setting your backpack on the middle seat. âhey, donât sit there. sunghoon was just about to move.â
âoh! okay!â you get up, looking at sunghoon innocently.
âfuck you,â the black-haired boy says under his breath. âiâm supposed to be your passenger princess.â
âhi hoon!â you sweetly greet him, he suddenly doesnât feel too betrayed anymore.
âhey,â he says as he goes to the back seat, switching places with you.
you all buckle into the car and as jake backs out of the parking lot you reach over the console to plug your phone into the charger.
jake never lets me do that without asking! sunghoon thinks to himself.
you start fiddling with the car plane on his screen. selecting yourself as aux and playing your shared playlist with jake.
sunghoon notices that his phone is no longer an option for bluetooth on jakeâs car and feels even more offended.
jake hums along to the songs you queue as you sing along while reapplying your lip tint in the pull-down mirror.
jake said he hates this song! sunghoon thinks again, cringing at how down bad his friend is for you.
when the trio arrives at sunghoonâs house he quickly gets out and bids goodbye to you only as you wave through the window as he walks up the steps to his front door.
jake soon receives a text from his best friend.
penghoon đ§ : that was disgusting GET UPP i am your PASSENGER PRINCESS NOT HER âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸đđđ
03. corsage
the friday before prom on the way home school school, jake canât shake off the sad pout on your face. he feels as if thereâs a small rain cloud thundering above your head thatâs making your lips droop.
âwhatâs the matter?â jake asks gently as he sees your sad state.
âi donât have a date to prom anymore,â your frown becomes stronger.
âwhat?â he asks with wide eyes. âdid you just find out? prom is tomorrow night?â
âi know,â you slouch into your seat. âher boyfriend surprised her by flying in last night and now i donât get to have a corsage like everyone else! neither do i have a rideâŚâ
âiâll pick you up,â jake offers. âi donât have a date either.â
âthank you,â you say with a slight frown still on your face, though inside your relieved to know jake is going alone.
the next morning jake rushes to find a place that has a corsage just perfect for you and for him to match with.
unfortunately, he doesnât know your dress color so he brings as many different colored ties with him when he picks you up. picking a white corsage so it can match with any color.
when you answer the door jake feels all the air being knocked from his lungs. youâre breathtaking. literally. he starts coughing and you pull him into your house and pat his back.
âwhereâs your tie?â you ask when he finally starts breathing normally again.
âi have multiple in my car,â he says bashfully. âi wanted to make sure we matched.â
jake quickly leaves to retrieve the ties and corsage.
when you spot the clear box with the pretty white flower that matches the one on his blazer youâre quick to nearly tackle him.
âoh my god! you got me a corsage!â you squeal hugging is neck tightly.
âanything for my prom date,â pats your head, careful to not mess up the hairstyle he knows you spent a good hour on.
04. third-wheel
âare we waiting for someone?â you ask as jake scrolls on his phone after you two have been sitting in the car for a couple of minutes now.
âyeah,â jakeâs eyes drift from his phone to the back exit of the school, finally seeing the tall black-haired boy making his way towards the car. âweâre bringing riki home.â
âhey guys!!â the younger boy grins as he slides into the backseat.
âhi ki!â you smile at him in the rearview mirror. âdo you want to come with me and jae to the cafĂŠ downtown? or are you busy?â
âiâm not busy!â riki has a shit-eating grin plastered on his face, knowing that jake had told him to not get in the way of your study date.
alas, youâre the one who invited him, so jake cannot protest.
âoh! haha great!â jake says as he grips the steering wheel hard enough that his knuckles turn white. luckily for him, thatâs the least of your concerns as you stare at the way his veins have become more prominent. âthe more the merrier!â
the three of you sit in a booth in the cafĂŠ. thankfully jake had kicked riki out of your side of the booth while you were in the bathroom. now jake was by your side doing his own homework as you both shared a slice of strawberry shortcake.
riki on the other hand sits at the opposite side of the table with his straw conveniently next to his mouth as he plays games on his phone.
âriki, donât you have any homework?â you ask him as you look over at the gaming underclassmen.
âi did it in study hall,â he clarifies, eyes still glued to his screen like a giant ipad kid.
âi find that hard to believe,â jake whispers in your ear.
âbe nice,â you nudge him, to which he shrugs.
you both go back to doing your work for a while until jake sees that you have one bite's worth of cake left. he knows youâll argue with him and insist he eats it. so instead he silently picks it up with his fork and turns to you.
â____,â he says as he brings the utensil to your lips, waiting for you to get the whole piece before retracting his hand, âgood?â he asks.
you nod your head as you finish chewing the cake. jake notices that some icing got stuck on the corner of your lips and wordlessly brings his thumb to your face to clean you.
you both stare at each other. the way your eyes sparkle when jake makes eye contact with you is mesmerizing. he dares to almost lean in until riki clears his throat.
âum, my mom says i have to be home for dinner soon.â
âoh yeah,â jake says as he awkwardly backs away. âletâs get you home.â
05. driver switch
youâve been sitting around in jakeâs car for about an hour now. you didnât know he had practice today and he had only gotten to tell you after the buses left.
instead, he had you walk to the soccer field so he could give you his keys so you could wait in the car for him.
his teammates looked at him suspiciously when you approached.
âsince when did you have a girlfriend?â heeseung, the soccer captain asks.
âthatâs ____,â riki, an underclassman, interrupts, âjakeâs neighbor heâs secretly in love with.â
âshut up,â jake shoves his shoulder as you were still walking close by.
âis that why you wouldnât set me up on a date with her?â sunghoon pops up behind jake, startling him.
âmaybe,â jake mumbles, taking the ball and kicking it along.
once practice is over jake walks to the parking lot with sunghoon and jay. he spots you from afar sitting in his car while reading a book.
he says goodbye to his friends who are quick to tease him and walks over to the car. knocking on the window so you let him open it.
âhi! how was practice?â
âtiring,â jake sighs, placing his bag in the back seat.
âseems like it,â you comment, âiâll drive us home!â
ânah, itâs fine.â
âplease! i never get to drive because i donât have my own car,â you whine, âyouâre clearly tired anyways.â
âitâs my car,â jake argues.
âbut i have the keys!â you pout.
âjust this once,â jake says while you both switch seats.
06. the date
after your almost kiss at the cafĂŠ, jake musters up the courage to bring you on a real date. the near kiss did everything to confirm that the pining he had been doing for you since the beginning of high school was mutual.
waiting for him to pick you up was seriously nerve-wracking. you kept telling yourself that this wasnât new at all, which is true, and that it was just jake.
but that was exactly the problem.
you havenât seen jake since he confessed to you and asked you out on a real date.
that was three days ago, the last day of school when he dropped you home after getting celebratory ice cream.
youâve been in jakeâs car with him more than a hundred times but today was different. you werenât just driving to school or around town, you were going on a date with him.
at that fancy place, you both discussed going to back when you were just friends. scrolling through the menu on the website for a hypothetical meal turned into reality now.
âyou look beautiful,â jake says when you walk downstairs.
of course, he went inside to talk to your parents beforehand. jake was nothing but a gentleman. he reaches for your hand and twirls you around once your feet touch the floor. he admires your dress with lovesick eyes and you think you might as well be dreaming right now.
you bid goodbye to your parents and walk hand in hand down to his car. jake reached to open the passenger door for you and made sure you were inside before closing it.
you fiddle with your necklace as jake starts the car, which he catches onto the awkward atmosphere quickly.
âare you nervous?â jake glances over at you.
âkinda- a lot actually,â you chuckle awkwardly. âitâs just kinda weird being in your car for the first time after we told each other we liked each other.â
âi get it,â jake nods his head before reaching over the console to take your shaking hand into his. âitâs just me.â
âthatâs the thing,â you say. âof course iâm nervous jae, i like you, and now you know.â
âi like you too though and iâm also nervous,â he squeezes your hand. âthis shouldnât be any different from when we hang out! just donât overthink it.â
âokay,â you feel yourself getting flustered, interlacing your fingers with his as he starts driving.
âat least we already know what we want to order!â jake laughs, recalling your late-night menu scrolling two weeks ago before either of you knew about the reciprocated feelings. âone less thing to be worried about.â
you finally let out a genuine laugh.
that night when jake walks you back to your door he does what riki interrupted you from doing. kissing you softly under the dim light provided by your porch light.
when you both finally pull away to see jake cutely pouting at the fact your night together is coming to a close.
âwhatâs wrong, yun?â you giggle, resting your hands on his chest.
âi donât want to go home yet,â he says with a pout on his face. bringing you closer so your head rests on his chest as he holds you.
âmaybe you can come inside?â you look up at him with hopeful eyes.
at the end of the night, you end up in your boyfriendâs arms.

Visual Parallels: The Full Moon and Mastermind
It's mad scientist mode time ya'll.
The visual references to other episodes in Mastermind are wild. People have already beautifully pointed out how the duet sequence references Blitz's "Truth Seekers" hallucination and "Just Look My Way," and makes the two inner worlds mesh.
"The Full Moon" is also heavily referenced. I first noticed it in this shot of Stolas . . .
Which is repeated quite similarly a few times in the trial scene, and looks a lot like . . .
The camera angle (if there were a camera) is pretty much identical.
This made me realize that the whole sequence (the duet and Blitz getting pulled away afterward) has them positioned with Blitz facing Stolas and Stolas's back to Blitz, with a similar distance between them to what we see in "The Full Moon."
And as I rewatched both, I saw more and more.
An attempt by Blitz to touch Stolas, and Stolas not turning around, having already decided his course of action.
(Is anyone noticing a similar color palate yet?)
And a forced exit, based on a decision that Stolas makes:
So this very well might show that Stolas is holding a lot of the power in their relationship. But also, the similar elements in these scenes aren't identical- they simply rhyme.
There are some interesting differences with Blitz's physical expressions of desperation. Even though he's set away from Stolas against a bright red background when he's expressing himself in both.
In "The Full Moon," well . . .
He's guarded. His hands spend a lot of their time in fists. He's moving toward Stolas but not giving all of himself until it's too late.
But in "Mastermind . . .
It's like he's drawn by a magnet to Stolas while being forcibly pulled away. He's fighting the forces that would keep them apart, that would harm Stolas. He's fighting with everything he has. His hands are open the whole time he's fighting. The walls are gone.
Doors are also interesting in their contrast.
In "The Full Moon," we see Blitz bursting into the room like this:
In "Mastermind," the door behind Stolas serves as Blitz's exit point, but the camera angle, again, is very similar . . .
I don't know what to make of this one, honestly, except that these moments seem to reverse each other. I think there COULD be symbolism here (barriers and who creates them), but I'm not sure there's enough evidence that it's intentional like the others.
Now for a few key things "Mastermind" has that "The Full Moon" needed. Our boys weren't ready yet, but now they are.
Obviously the duet . . . but did you notice that their movements synchronize too? They're not looking at each other, but literally and figuratively, they're in tune.
2. Eye contact. FUCKING EYE CONTACT. It's so brief you could miss it.
There's recognition there. They each see that the other feels the same way.
Even though Stolas never turns around, and still has A LOT to learn about Blitz, they meet at the core of the matter. "Harriet, don't get on that train. It's going to London, and I CANNOT BE WITHOUT YOU."

I have gone down this rabbit hole now and I'm afraid I'm never getting out. I hope I give justice to this. And sorry if this is long.
I've seen a lot of the Colin and Marina vs. Colin and Penelope analyses in here and I want to raise this parallel as to how the Butterfly ball was such a powerful move for both Penelope and Colin. We all have our issues with how they handled Pen and Colin finding their way back to each other but let me add this perspective and hope it helps us understand how real they handled the issue of LW and pushed the character development for them both.
The scene on the left is from S01e06 (Swish) and the right is S03e08 (Into the Light)
S1 scene - Violet is still in her dressing gown, obviously distraught having just read something from LW. She hears someone come down and finds Colin.
S3 scene - Violet is dressed for the morning and her face looks a combination of surprise and confusion after reading a letter. She turns around when she hears someone coming down the stairs.
In both scenes, we see Colin coming down the stairs.
S1 - we only see Colin's back. We're in suspense on what emotional state he is in but we do know that he's on his way to elope with Marina.
In S3 - we see Colin's face immediately looking determined and ready. We see Violet calling his name quite urgently.
S1 - Colin sees his mother's face looking like a combination of disappointment and anger. He asks what's happening. She doesn't say anything but just looks at Colin with a sadness that only a mother can give.
S3 - Violet pointedly says that she received a letter from Colin's wife (I love this line so much) that sounds awfully like "I need you to explain what's happening right now."
S1 - Violet hands Colin LW without saying anything and just looks so so so sad. Colin is shocked to his core because we learn that LW (Pen) exposes Marina's pregnancy and that she has been pregnant from the beginning of the season.
S3 - Colin determinedly faces his mother telling her that they had better sit. And I'm guessing that Colin tells her everything.
Where am I going with this? (Gosh, doing an analysis is hard đ)
The first time Colin fell in love (thought he fell in love), he was blindsided. But I believe the pain he felt at that time was made deeper because his family had to save him from the situation (Anthony explaining that his actions in the scandal will affect his sisters' prospects as well). To think that it was his mother who first learned of the situation added salt to the wound because we all know that he is a mama's boy and that the one person he dislikes letting down is his mother.
The second (and last time) Colin falls in love, he once again feels betrayed. But he's fallen in love so deeply that he can't imagine his life without Pen. The struggle he goes through in understanding his emotions was very hard to watch and it's because the issue goes beyond his and Pen's relationship. It extends to his family.
Colin's hero complex goes beyond feeling worthy of Pen's love but also worthy of the Bridgerton name. We see it several times in S3 when he mentions it in his confrontation with Portia (" I advise you not to sully our Bridgerton name...") and when Pen tells him that Cressida discovered her secret ("It will besmirch our Bridgerton name. The entire family").
The whole sequence in the study is now more significant because of what Pen addresses in their conversation-- Colin's family ("Your family... the one you so kindly shared with me, they are too good").
Pen's "sacrifice" ("But I can no longer conceal the biggest piece of information I have. My identity."), I believe, was to save the Bridgerton family (once again) and she asks Colin to stand by her as she formulates and executes this plan.
It was very important that Pen wrote a letter to Violet directly and that Colin was there right after she's read it to explain everything. From this point on, they were a team. From this point on, Colin moves in parallel with Pen instead of against it. Colin finally sees that version of Pen that she's always been even while she was LW-- the person who was always determined to save his family just as much as he does.
From this point on, their goals were aligned.
10 rewatches after, I finally see how Colin found his way back to Pen. It wasn't very obvious to me how he got over the feelings of betrayal after he discovered Pen was LW. Of course, him reading the letters help but the events leading up to the Butterfly ball, helped him see her as both Pen and Lady Whistledown and the overflowing pride we see on his face was heart-melting to watch.
From this point on, they finally see each other eye to eye. From this point on, they finally accept this version of each other.
If you got to the end, thanks for reading my humble musings.

EVE BEST TALKING ABOUT FILMING THE ROOK'S REST SEQUENCE IN EPISODE 4.
THE ROOK'S REST SEQUENCE IS SO COMPLEX: YOU ATTACK AEGON, YOU'RE BEING ATTACKED BY AEMOND, YOU'RE LEAVING, YOU'RE TURNING AROUND, YOU'RE FLIPPING AND FLYING.
WHAT WENT INTO FILMING IT? WAS IT ALL ONE DAY, OR DID YOU SPLIT THE DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF THE FIGHT UP?
"My God, one day, are you kidding me? It took two weeks." [Laughs]
"I was on that buck for two solid weeks â just me, because everyoneâs doing their bits individually."
"The boys had maybe five days each."
"For me, it was this big block of time because Rhaenys has to span the whole sequence."
"She had to be hanging upside down at one point and then doing spins and rolls; they had to plot each separate move, each little tiny one."
"So I was on that thing for two weeks, and I was in agony."
"I kept asking for more cushions, because I was feeling like my bum wasnât padded enough."
"Itâs a real workout on your thighs and on your core, and I felt very ill-equipped."
"The boys, especially Ewan, love it."
"I remember meeting Ewan the first time in season one, and heâd just done his buck work, and he was sitting outside his trailer and we bumped into each other."
"He was sitting there just kind of glowing, like heâd just taken drugs."
And he said, âAre you gonna do the buck soon?â
And I said, âYeah, whatâs it like?â
And he said, âOh my God. Itâs life-changing." [Laughs]
"And I thought, Oh my God."

With FS 2 finally out I wanted to share some of my thoughts, I think it would be fun to talk about the possible mental state Angeal is in around this time in his life and subsequently how it reflects Sephiroth, as well as the meaning behind Angeal's dream sequence.
Since a lot of the details of Angealâs backstory are hidden in external material, Iâm going to use it as a point of reference. Crisis Core has a lot of content they were not able to include at the time of itâs release, so it will be fun to see if they follow up on these things they wrote about but couldnât include in game.
We already see from the get go that Angeal is serving as a contrast to Sephirothâs outlook, demeanor, and manners. Angealâs energy and passion he has for teamwork, his comrades, and genuine care he has for doing his job all directly contrast Sephirothâs whatever attitude. Even small acts of chivalry are made to highlight this, showing Angeal going the extra mile to help Alissa across the bridge vs Sephirothâs refusal to engage with anyone socially. Sephiroth was brought up to function independently, made to be a one man army, no use for friends, families, or allies. Especially with the recent loss of friends, he is going to be distant.
This is extremely important for contrast with Angeal, who has likely recently left home and is missing his family, not to mention he is someone he deeply values his connection to others. There is no set age for when Angeal left home, but it is likely within the last 2~ years. His sword in game is listed as type 90, this is comparable to Zackâs sword in CC which is type 99, the type number likely reflects the year the sword was created or the year of when that model was created. Assuming that it's updated every year, leans towards the fact they've been in SOLDIER since at least that year. Meaning Angeal likely left home at 14~, which is closer to around the age Zack and Cloud left home for SOLDIER anyways.
Angeal is someone very sentimental, he is very defensive of his home and his family. CC showed us he was quite nostalgic about Banora on several occasions. This is another contrast to Sephiroth, who doesn't have a hometown or a family. According to the CC ultimania, Genesis was one of the motivators for Angeal to leave and find a better way of living. The new chapter confirmed Angeal left home because he wanted to help pull his family out of poverty. In CC, Angeal's father was said to fall sick from overwork to pay off debt from the buster sword; however, the ultimania mentions an important detail: his father has always been weak and sickly. Itâs partly due to his father being chronically ill/disabled that they arenât able to make a lot of money. The buster sword isnât the sole cause of his death but rather an extension of working in a system that likely exploits disabled people. Genesis might have been the push Angeal needed to leave far away from home rather than staying and trying to take care of his sick father.
Which gets us to Angealâs dream, there is debate on how much of it is real because Sephirothâs wasnât real. In my personal opinion, the dream being real is a very important contrast to Sephiroth. We know that whatever Alissa is, she is preying on the desires of them. Especially in the case of her being Jenova, who uses memories of her victims to her advantage. Angeal doesnât need to make up a scenario of his family loving him or being proud of him, because itâs already a reality, Sephiroth doesnât have this luxury. Angeal's father pushed himself to the brink just so he could support his son in his endeavor, there is no doubt his family loved and supported him. So, what is Angeal's actual desire then? In CC it is never really specified when Angeal's father died, but in Gillianâs profile in the ultimania, it mentions his father died shortly after Angeal left for SOLDIER, even the dream is hinting towards something bad happening on the horizon. Angeal's dad is probably already dead and it is mirroring Sephiroth wanting to see his mother. Possibly reinforced by the fact he is already refusing to use the buster, while it's not confirmed if he didnât use it all because of his cheapness, I think his father's death added significant value to the sword, making it irreplaceable. They are two kids who just want to be with their parents again, one's desire being entirely fictional and the other's being in the past. It is another contrast between them with their dreams: Sephiroth's being all he lacks, and Angeal's is all he had, but left behind. Both unattainable but in a different sense.
This dream is likely some of the last stability Angeal had before leaving home, along with possibly being one of the last times he saw his father alive which is probably why he is yearning for it. I think if the dream itself symbolized only wanting stability Angeal wouldnât mention leaving for SOLDIER, I donât think he wanted to leave home to provide for his family if given the choice. Instead "Jenova" is preying on something that is tangible. However, there is still a possibility it is exaggerated a bit with Angeal having the money for donations and plenty of food. I don't think this is true either, the dream implies Angeal was already working at this age to support his family, so itâs not entirely out of the question he uses what little he has to give back or that he helped with saving for Gillian's birthday party. In contrast nothing in Sephiroth's dream was real besides the fact he lives in the Shinra building, we know Angeal has loving parents, we know he is a hard worker, we know he left for soldier, and we know he loves his village and his family, more was real than just the setting. Also, I think there's a point that this is a special occasion, they could've opted to save up for her birthday. It really didnât feel too wild to me that one day in particular they had extra food, especially considering they live in a farm village. When and the exact reason why Angeal stole when he was younger is honestly not clarified at all. He could have been afraid of asking for extra food, it could have been during droughts, or even when his father was too sick to work. It is very common for poor families in remote villages to grow their own crops, we even see people in Gongaga growing their own supply, so these things are not really out of the question. I think if any of these details were fake Angeal would be confused or surprised by having these things like how Sephiroth did to make it clear to us as the viewer, but that didnât happen. The dream closes with remarking his desire to provide for his family so they live happy and healthy⌠and we know that didnât happen, which is the point. I think it's also worth mentioning there are some small discrepancies in the localization. He isn't just giving out expensive equipment to multiple people individually, instead, it's a donation that is meant to be shared by everyone. Angeal is building community with farmers who might also be struggling, and I feel like this is an important detail that's missing.
(small disclaimer: I'm not fluent, I only know basics, but I did my best to break down the sentences to make sure these were accurate)
I think itâs clear Angeal isnât yearning to be rich (or someone else thatâs not even relevant in the current narrative⌠especially when their focus currently is to compare and contrast him with Sephiroth). If Angeal wanted to be rich or famous why isn't he chatting up the PR guy to hope it gets him more attention to the point of promotion? Instead Angeal cares about doing his job and making sure itâs done right, he even gets angry at Bachman and tells him his priority is the rescue mission. Angeal cares deeply about protecting and caring for the people around him, especially those important to him. The dream is only reinforcing this. They even made his gameplay reflect his narrative by being the one to provoke and tank damage for his team, which shows how he views his role as a leader. I want to preface this with there being nothing wrong if the dream ends up being exaggerated, I think regardless it is a good insight on Angeal's character. He loves his family and friends, he wants to support them and make them happy. It shows how they were a positive influence on his life and how they affected his motivations. I think narratively speaking though, Angeal having something that is at very least somewhat more real is another important contrast with Sephiroth, especially when a point of contention between them is how they grew up in different worlds. I think the turmoil of Angealâs father being most likely dead is going to carry a lot of weight for this story and is meant to parallel Sephiroth's desires for wanting family, it possibly being how they find common ground. While Angeal did grow up in a loving household, he is going through a lot right now with his father's passing. The focus on the Buster sword is incredibly important since it is going to represent why Angeal fights. To protect and to care for what he couldnât back home, for what his father wanted for him. A dream of a better future and to not lose sight of his morals.
In my personal opinion, it makes a lot of sense that Genesis might not be joining for this section of the story. It's shining a light on some of two most iconic swords in gaming history, and how Angealâs outlook related to his struggles is going to shape Sephiroth. Angealâs character and his trauma shape the foundation of the Buster sword and future wielders, and it shaping the Masamune too will be an extension of that. He is the heart of SOLDIER, and I am excited to see this story continue to reinforce that.

(I canât believe I finished this so fast⌠I basically blacked out and then it was done lol⌠Anyway, please remember that this is all just my personal opinion, and if you feel differently, thatâs fine!)
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review
Objectively speaking, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a fun game that the average player is going to enjoy, especially if that average player is coming in without any prior knowledge to the Dragon Age franchise. I believe this is a good jumping-in spot for people who are curious about the world of Thedas. But in contrast, I have seen a lot of criticism from other hard-core fans that I largely agree with. However, it just so happens that most of the criticism I have is not enough to prevent me from overall enjoying the game. That is to say, for pretty much everything I did not like, there was also something I thought was great⌠Unfortunately, that makes it a little difficult to give a review. So, Iâm going to do my best to keep things as clear and concise as possible by splitting up the âgoodâ and the âbadâ aspects of DATV.
The Positive
The best thing to come out of DATV is the new cast of characters that make up your companions and supporting associates. While I do think that some of them could have benefitted from more development time to flesh things out further, just judging what we ended up with, is mostly great. I especially found Emmrich and Bellara to be stand-out examples of strong personalities to grasp onto, whose personal stories really touched me in an emotional way.
DATV also has fun with some returning characters. For example, now that Solas is no longer hiding his identity, we get to see a character that both believably honours his part in Inquisition, while also providing a new, refreshing side to him. There are also a number of characters introduced in Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights that appear in the game, like my personal favourites Teia and Viago, who are an absolute delight to interact with!
I think the three act structure is good, albeit with act three being quite short. There are a few sequences that are an absolutely phenomenal mixture of storytelling and engaging gameplay, like all of Weisshaupt! I also really enjoyed stepping out of the main story every once and a while, and into Solasâs backstory through the Crossroads memories â what ended up being extra special about these is how they mirror Rookâs struggle so well, by the end. They are a nice touch.
The locations are beautifully constructed with smooth interactions of climbing, zip-lining, and essentially parkouring your way around, making them fun to explore! They also came with such distinct flavours and character in themselves that influenced a sense of truly experiencing different parts of Thedas, with different cultures.
The mechanic of building up strength with the different factions, and that actually having a huge impact with the ultimate showdown in the end of the game, makes side quests feel far less inconsequential than in Dragon Age: Inquisition by comparison. That, and they number far less.
I like that the story mode actually feels like a story mode; there were only a couple instances where I really had to worry about death, and even then, I was able to just toggle off the death with the customizable gameplay mechanics and continue on.
Finally, it would be remiss not to say that the character creator for DATV is the best BioWare has ever put out. Iâd go as far as saying itâs one of the best in any RPG Iâve ever personally experienced. From the flexibility in morphing a characterâs head and body between custom shapes, to the little details like sclera colour, vitiligo, and top surgery scars, makes it a shining example of what RPGâs should strive for. (My only critique here is that it would have been nice to have more skin colours.)
The Neutral
I hated the combat for pretty much the entire first act of the game. I found it too hard to keep up with, and too much like Mass Effect bullshit. I canât say that itâs completely grown on me yet, but I donât hate it anymore. Itâs fine. So, Iâm giving this a special little spot before I get into what I didnât like all the way to the end.
The Negative
As mentioned above, I do think that there is more that could be done with some of the characters to really achieve their full potential. Davrin and Lucanisâwhile to be clear I still really enjoy as they areâcome to mind first, in terms of those who would have benefited from more development time. Most of Davrinâs screen time just revolves around Assan rather than Davrin himself, and Lucanis is so restrained that it takes a while to really crack him open. Both of these characters have intentional personalities that make them harder to get to know, I understand that, but I feel that it would have been all the more rewarding to have more time dedicated to their company after earning their trust and possibly endearment. Instead, it feels like their romance and friendship with Rook are only half-complete, and then rushed to finish.
There are some companion interactions that are just⌠cringe. There is no other word for it. Now, this is nothing new for BioWare games, but I feel like the âpulling a Bharvâ scene for example, was hitting an entirely new low. (If someone misgendered me and then just started doing push-ups instead of just saying âhey sorry about that, Iâll try to do betterâ Iâd be annoyed, not satisfied.) I also felt like most of the temporary rivalries between companions were artificial in nature, rather than organically part of their characters that actually served a purpose. We already knew Emmrich likes books and Harding likes nature; we did not need a whole cutscene with them bickering about camping. (The exception to this is Davrin and Lucanis, who genuinely had room to grow as people out of their multiple confrontations, not just a one-off scene.)
The music in DATV is, for the most part, forgettable and bland. There is one piece that really stands out, and thatâs âWhere the Dead Must Goâ, which is a real banger. I am not a fan of Hans Zimmerâs OST otherwise; I think it is phoned in, just like most of his work. I deeply wish BioWare would have just stuck with Trevor Morris. The best parts musically in this game are just Morrisâs work re-used from Dragon Age: Inquisition.
There are certain parts of disjointedness that separates DATV from the past games that are just⌠bizarre. This is especially the case when it comes to elven lore. For example, Bellara saying she is afraid that elves will be harshly judged for the Evanrus, or Harding saying that elves are âthrivingâ⌠as if modern elves are not deeply persecuted across most of Thedas. It made me question more than once if there just was not time in development to do a proper canon-compliancy check with everything, perhaps?
I want finish this part by bringing up again that the biggest flaw in DATV is that it feels very corporate. To repeat what I said in this post: It is as if a computer ran through the gameâs script and got rid of anything with âtoo muchâ political substance, in an overcorrection to be âsafeâ. But now that the edges have been so smoothed down to make a block into a ball, it can no longer support anything.
Conclusion
Itâs easy to see a lot of creativity went into the creation of this game⌠but it is also easy to make assumptions on how that creativity was constrained by development hell and corporate oversight. In the end though, Dragon Age: The Veilguard succeeded in being an overall good time, one that I will no doubt be putting just as many countless hours into as the previous installments in the franchise. 7/10.

My magnum opus, the jewel of my Binderary round-up, the result of four months of hard work (that is to say, a lot of force applied over distance), the project affectionately known as The Motherfuckers (because it was rather unclear if I was going to finish these books or if they were going to be the end of me).
Force over Distance by cleanwhiteroom. It is currently also on AO3.
I was first introduced to this incredible story by a dear friend, who first sold me on actually watching SGU, and then said that they remember this fic since like 2011, which is always a promising sign. I went digging and found out I was in luck - the story was being rewritten and reuploaded on the author's blog. The next two weeks are described by the same friend as "one of the scariest moments in our cohabitation" as I'd spent literally every waking moment injecting the story directly into my eyeballs, and let me tell you, I'd not been doing a lot of sleeping at that time.
Then I gathered up my courage and reached out to CWR re: my burning desire to bind this story. And the rest, well. Let's dig into it, shall we?
This was my first time typesetting 540k words. Considering I tend to prefer larger font sizes for increased legibility, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be a multivolume project. I settled on three, as it's the relationship between three individuals that forms the core of the story.
I also knew I wanted to keep the typeset in black and white, but play around with light and dark a lot. So I did. One of the first design idea I actually had was the way I wanted to handle projected speech. Mental link between Young, Rush and Destiny is THE most vital part of the story, and I wanted to make it immediatly obvious. I also wanted to be able to take one glance at the page and tell how much of the action is actually just two guys staring each other down :) Hence the blackout effect of thoughts being represented as light over darkness.
I also wanted to preserve as much of my reading experience as possible. So I saved all the chapter quotes/summaries in the TOC, and hid the chapter content warnings in the frame of the gate that marks the beginning of each chapter. For most of the chapter the warnings stay the same, so after a while you stop really noticing them, but then you open a new chapter and see that the familiar shape of the words has changed, and get this UH-OH feeling. Which, I think is very much how it works in my design, because when the warnings change there's usually another line of text added.
For flashbacks and dream sequences I switched from italics to a lighter shade of gray. I woudn't say it's more legible per say, but it's in keeping with the overall light/dark theme.
There are instances of people using handwritten notes in the story. I collected more than a dozen of assorted handwriting fonts, with each character having their own "handwriting". So when, for example, someone begins writing in someone else's hand, you immediately know it.
The most insane, labor-intensive part of the typeset, however, was the way I decided to handle the Ancient translations. CWR's gone through the trouble of setting up hover-to-discover for it, which gives you a very different reading experience than, say, having the translations in the endnotes. So, naturally, I said to myself that I want to replicate that, and footnotes just won't do the trick. So. Every instance of Ancient in the text has an underlay of light gray Ancient script. And an OVERLAY of paper vellum with the translation printed in blue. Now, not to toot my own horn too much, but if looks SICK AS FUCK. You also MAYBE SHOULD NOT LIVE LIKE THIS. For the two copies of this work I had to cut up 10 sheets of vellum into strips, and then spent from 20 minutes to an hour per volume tipping the strips in their proper places. I then had to wear kinetic tape on both my hands to help with the joint pain. (It was worth it.)
Now for the title spread. It is also paper vellum that you see as soon as you turn the first page (the half-title), and see it covering the title of the book and author's name. And then you turn it. And the shields sing the matter wave of Destiny through the black. And yeah, I think that's very, very clever of me, actually.
Then, of course, were the endpapers. All 12 of them are unique abstract paintings done on black cardstock by hand with brush pens and correction tape, I scanned a sample of each set for posterity. All of them are my interpretations of characters' midscapes. For volume 1 I went with the fire wind of Rush's thoughts. Volume 2 was for Young, and I went for the reverse blackout poetry effect (because for all the mental talking they do, the unprojected thoughts are opaque to their counterparts) and all the loops, hairpins and blocks he does. Volume 3 is for the combination - Rush's fire wind, changing its color to match the circuitry pattern of Destiny's AI.
The rest, in comparison, is easy. All volumes are stitched with 3 strands of embroidery floss, a combination of black, blue and silvery-gray. The French double-core endbands are sewn in the same color scheme (though with a different shade of blue and gray switched for white for added contrast). The edges are painted and splattered to look like space.
The covers feature my (signature at this point, I guess) half-cloth river pattern, with the base being dark blue linen and the printed parts being Spitzer telescope images of the W51 star forge, Jack-O'-Lantern Nebula and the Eagle Nebula (courtesy of NASA), waxed by hand for added sheen. The spines are foiled in silver with a foil quill.
Each set is 5 pound of solid hand-crafted book, with one set being my personal copy, and the other sent as a gift to the author.
And that's it, folks! This has been an incredible project to work on, and I'm very proud of what I achieved with it.

Vander's flashback sequence here has made so much about this season click for me - the song "Remember Me" has the narrator asking themself to remember who they are, and we see Vander remember Vi, Powder, Mylo, and Claggor, we see him remember Silco, Benzo, and Felicia
and Vander's the most obvious example of this, but this is the scene that made it click for me - these characters are remembering themselves through connecting with other people, whether in their memories or in the present. Jinx connected with Isha, and through it we see her connect with her joy and sisterly love again
Vi, too, has been disconnected from the world since she was thrown in Stillwater, and when she got out, the sister Vi thought she still knew was so far gone her sister might as well have been dead
and Vi began connecting with Caitlyn through her search for her sister, which was a new, tenuous source of hope - and one that she clung to desperately - but was too easily broken by Caitlyn's own grief and fixation on revenge
so Vi was then cut off from everyone she let get close and who she thought she could trust, and it put her in a bad, self-destructive spot
but when Jinx discovers Vander is still alive, she reaches out to Vi, having already begun to remember herself as a daughter and a sister who cares deeply about her family - and Vi ultimately put her faith in Jinx's word that this was Vander - when trust wasn't something Vi gave her the first time they lost Vander
and through that found her father again - found her family again - and she reconnected with the part of herself that was willing to trust the people around her that she loves, was open to reconciling past hurts even if those people have changed
and so, when Caitlyn showed up near the commune and asked Vi why she was down there, having already revealed they were after Vander, Vi was ready to try trusting Caitlyn again with the truth
Caitlyn - as Ambessa pointed out - was also deeply disconnected having lost her mother, her father a shell, pushed away Vi, and Jayce missing. she was easy for Ambessa to manipulate into terrible actions, but reconnecting with Vi was a catalyst for Caitlyn to finally push back against Ambessa's constant infringement on what Caitlyn used to believe were her core principles of justice to help Vi save her father from further manipulation by a warlord
the fact that Jinx saved Caitlyn from Rictus when she once resented Caitlyn for taking her sister's care now that she's helped save Vander in efforts to keep Jinx' family together
and that an armed Caitlyn ran past Jinx right beside her in the fighting, more concerned with Vi's injury than her revenge, after connecting with Vi and seeing how saving Vander, reuniting Vi's family, and cutting the Noxians loose was right thing to do - Caitlyn has started to get back in touch with what really matters
and it all started with a scared little girl who, while running away and hiding from the monsters in Zaun, fell into Jinx's life
and during her time with Jinx, Isha gained her own courage

I've seen enough people mischaracterizing Early Access Wyll, so here's the best breakdown of his original character I can give.
I'll start this off by plainly summarizing Wyll's EA backstory, some of his core personality traits, then do a bit of analysis.
BACKSTORY
EA Wyll mentions being "born and bred in the upper city" into nobility. It's unspecified what exact level of influence his family occupied.
In datamined voice lines from EA (take with a grain of salt) Wyll refers to being from House Eltan specifically. Eltan was the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate in the first Baldur's Gate Game, and the founder of the Flaming Fist. Forgotten Realms lore states that the Eltans are no longer in charge of the Fist and have somewhat diminished in power, but again. We don't know to exactly what level.
This also means that this iteration of Wyll was not Ulder Ravengard's son. While he still spoke about his father in EA, the descriptions and characterizations do not line up with Ulder at all. Additionally, he comments about "knowing of" Ravengard during the burning inn sequence, but otherwise makes no connection.
The most damning evidence of all that Wyll being a Ravengard was not originally intended, is Wyll wanting to be like his father and thus "going thieving in the wrong shadows".
Wyll gets caught stealing, presumably as a teenager, and his father uses latent connections within the Flaming Fist to get Wyll sent there. Effectively the fantasy equivalent of sending your unruly kid to boot camp.
Wyll mentions that he didn't adjust well to life as part of the Flaming Fist, was not a very good fighter, and was generally not well liked. The goblin at the windmill calling Wyll "Captain Failure" implies he might have been given higher status despite not earning it.
The way Wyll feels about goblins is a big change between EA and full release, and is explained as part of his backstory.
We didn't get the finer details, but we can assume Wyll in his time with the Fist bore witness to a group of goblins razing a village. Horrified and enraged, he tried fighting a goblin, was overwhelmed, and had his eye torn out.
This is when Mizora showed up and offered him a pact. Considering he was left for dead and probably going to bleed out, it's pretty understandable why he took the deal.
Mizora is not nearly as present in Early Access as she is in the current game. Karlach was not involved in Wyll's story at all, there's no devil transformation.
It's also more heavily insinuated there's a sexually coercive element of Wyll and Mizora's relationship, with him speaking to how every time he wanted to leave her, she found some way to pull him back.
Additionally, Wyll wants out of that contract. Unlike full release where Mizora is randomly captured in Act 2, she starts off kidnapped, and insists she'll let Wyll go if he frees her
It kind of ended up being a plot cul de sac, but Torturer Spike was the goblin that took Wyll's eye--which was a quest item you could pickpocket/loot off his body. Wyll had commentary on it and everything.
TL;DR: -Born to a noble family with Flaming Fist connections -Caught Stealing and sent to work for the Fist as punishment -Tried to fight back during a goblin attack and was gravely injured -Mizora offers a pact -Uses his pact to become a traveling monster hunter, presumably to make up for his past failure to protect people. Antagonistic towards goblins in particular -Ultimately wants out of the pact, but Mizora won't let him go -Wyll and Mizora get abducted by Mind Flayers -Mizora agrees to let Wyll go if he frees her from the cultists
PERSONALITY
This is a bit less concrete than changed story beats, but I can say this: a lot of Wyll's core traits stayed intact between EA and full release. He's still willing to put his life on the line for the Tiefling refugees, with a whole cut line about how the kids he's training deserve to have a carefree childhood. He wants to do good in the world, probably because he spent so much time in his youth feeling like a fuck up.
There's also a much clearer divide between "Wyll" and "The Blade of Frontiers". Notably, in EA he didn't introduce himself by name. Not even a "my friends call me Wyll" quip at Shadowheart like he has currently. During his old romance scene, he has a line about being used to being the hero, and not used to needing one. He's a symbol. An emblem of something bigger than himself. The fact he's so self-aggrandizing as The Blade makes it apparent he's not confident in himself as "just Wyll"
He's also decidedly more forward and flirty in EA, with no reservations about courtship. In fact, the main obstacle to your budding relationship is Mizora herself. Wyll's trauma from her treatment interrupts your first night together. Whether you have sex or just snuggle, Wyll has a line about how he doesn't want to start a relationship until he can "give himself completely" after being freed from his pact.
THOUGHTS & COMPARISONS
I'm also not entirely sure if I'd say EA Wyll is substantially angrier than current Wyll, so much as he had more opportunities to be angry during Early Access. I can understand why the goblin stuff was cut, because it did dip into "Let's make the one black guy fantasy racist" trope. However, it did very much feel like the narrative was pointing in bright, flashing colors that this is a trait Wyll would have to grapple with, learn, and grow from. The fact EA Wyll's most glaring character flaw was scrapped and didn't get much of a replacement in full release makes his story feel less realized.
While I appreciate the overtly sexual element of Wyll and Mizora's relationship was removed, I feel like the final version is somehow even more creepy. During Early Access she existed in the background as a vague villain you only experience via Wyll. And if you do his romance scene and see the way he panics at the mere memory of her, you get the impression of oh shit. This broad is bad news and I've gotta get my boy out of there. The same principle behind not showing the big scary monster too early in the horror movie. Once you've seen it, you can't let your mind fill in the blanks. Mizora went from this intimidating figure whose motives you couldn't fully ascertain, to a mean girl that thinks she's smarter than everyone else but is really just the bumbling lackey of a bigger fish. Who pulls Wyll around with an actual metaphysical leash like a dog. And you're meant to find this sexy.
My final point, and I've said this before: current Wyll's personality seemed more suited to being a scion of house Eltan, while EA Wyll seemed more suited to being Ulder Ravengard's dissapointment son. Current Wyll speaks and carries him like someone raised in nobility despite only being elevated to such status as a teenager. Perhaps this is cynical and maybe even a bit of a conspiracy theory, but I genuinely think he's only Ravengard's son to save on time and assets. Why give Wyll a whole unique family with its own story when we can just tie him in to the "rescue the grand duke" plot, regardless of how much sense it makes!
#baldur's gate 3#bg3#BG3 Wyll#Wyll Ravengard#if any EA players want to add things I might've missed let me know#I'm so tired of people saying EA Wyll was like mean or didn't really care about the Tiefling refugees or something#his core personality did not change that much!! the main difference is that he lashed out due to anger and trauma more!!#I love every iteration of Wyll but his current iteration is introducing themes and then going nowhere with it#twilitalks
