Hollow Knight vs. Vivziepop character design language

I know it's kind of a wildcard comparison but Vivziepop is a fan of Hollow Knight and its designs. I wanted to explore how shape language, color usage and storytelling in design are used in both properties.

NPC designs do a great job at telling you the character's personality or occupation without being overly detailed. One well placed trait does wonders, like Cornifer with his bundles of maps or Tuk and her hoarding, scrap salvaging hobbies. Paired with the world it tells two people doing their best to survive their dying realm, one by mapping out the twists and turns and the other by scraping up whatever she can find from abandoned civilization.

Now when we look at visual storytelling in Hazbin there are some good details! Alastor's outfit design and trademark microphone give you old timey host vibes right away. Niffty (my angel) sports a poodle skirt, kerchief around her neck and apron, also telling you her occupation and time period she's likely from. Everyone in this show has a big toothy grin but hers plays well into her hyperactive and always happy personality.

But there are also really poor moments of character storytelling. Everything about Beelzebub has already been said. She doesn't read as gluttony, she doesn't read as a bee, and she doesn't read as an animal tamer. When I look at her I see every other wolf character Viv has ever done. If Jayjay is party wolf and Loona is goth wolf then Beelzebub is lava lamp wolf.

The sins are mostly misses for me. They don't read as their sins or their circus related occupations. Asmodeus has fire powers but doesn't read as fire spinner. Mammon doesn't give off greed at ALL but the jester look works (which is also wrong because he's a CLOWN apparently, not a jester.) And don't get me started on this one.

This is not Lucifer.

Nothing about this reads angel, devil or even pride. This design goes all in on the ringmaster design, which is great for the circus theme! But the apple on the hat is the closest we get to this being Lucifer. I didn't even notice the snake on his hat because it looks like a worm for the apple, and they both cover the crown.

Add a second apple on the cane. Okay, so we know for sure this is supposed to be Lucifer but...why? It's another Beelzebub moment where you're left wondering why the design went in this direction. "Apple" shouldn't be the only giveaway here for the most important man in the world these stories are being told in.

Now let's see the celestial leader of Hollow Knight.

That is a god.

Removing all story context, this is incredibly quick to read. Large wings, all white, glowing yellow eyes and a crown. It looks celestial and it doesn't even need color, which is the point!

Now lets view them both within their stories. Is there visual storytelling when compared to other characters and the world around then?

Hollownest is a dark world where every character is dully colored. The Radiance and her power stick out with a glow, juxtaposing themselves with the dark as the light.

Lucifer does not look any different than most of the Hazbin cast. He has all the red, the same sharp toothed grin, the same body type as 90% of the cast of both Hazbin and Helluva Boss. If you lined him up with everyone else somebody like Asmodeus would be chosen as the obvious leader of Hell with his stature and power in the design alone.

Simplicity can tell an entire story while overextending your designs can muddy it.

Hollow Knight relies on few details and minimal storytelling yet it weaves a tale of an usurped kingdom and a god fighting for revenge. You are void, the world is dull, and god is bright and beautiful and terrifying to your way of life.

Vivziepop wants to weave a complex tale but utterly fails to do so with her designs. I purposely did not bring up Cherri Bomb, Sir Pentious or Stolas' designs since they have elements that were taken from other people and properties. I wanted to focus on what she made with her own hands, and when I narrow it down I do not see the story being told or even what side some characters are supposed to be on. Adam and the exterminators look the same as any demon. The leaders of Hell mostly sink into the ocean of overdone details. When everybody is trying so hard to stand out nobody stands out.

Hello, Monkie men, Dragon girls, and all outside or in between. I come to introduce you all to my cool new au…

WARNING. THERE IS A LOT UNDER THE CUT.

Hi there!!! I’m really glad you’re interested! I won’t keep you waiting.

BASIC OVERVIEW

This au is a play on Mardi Gras traditions and whatever I decide I want to throw in. I’m not exactly following any rules, just having fun!

S1 events are kinda weird in this, they don’t exactly happen with MK and gang. They’ve taken place beforehand in their own ways. DBK and LBD are both free. LBD is our big bad. Yeah sorry guys this is mostly S2/3 centered.

The celestial realm in this AU is also referred to as the court of Mardi Gras. Both names work! Celestial Maidens are also referred to as Maidens of the Court, and Celestial army men are knights of the court, etc.

i do not plan on making a comic or a large fic. This will be mostly small pieces or a big story, which is why I’ll lay it out for you instead.

PLOT OVERVIEW

the Mayor hosts a grand masquerade ball, and MK and gang attend. They leave to go somewhere else for a split second, and upon returning find every attendant has gone missing. As the only surviving group of witnesses, they decide it’s on them to help figure out what happened!

as we already know, the Mayor works for the Lady Bone Demon, and it’s easy to guess this is her doing. The LBD gang are in fact behind this!

MK runs into Redson trying to steal Wukongs wand (staff) from a hidden room in the house of magic. This honestly plays out mostly how it does in canon, turns out MK has a connection to it and enter epic chase scene.

Wukong comes into the situation when he puts two and two together that the rumors of a new magician kid and the fact his wand isn’t there when he comes back.

Macaque is going to be our most frequent antagonist, who we meet the most often. He’s honestly who I think I’ll have the most fun with. I’m letting him be a theater kid.

They will search for the rings of Samadhi at some point.

OTHER STUFF

Chang’e makes the moon pies. Listen it’s PEEFECT.

The brotherhood is still a heavy wip, as well as the journey. Like lowk I may leave it untouched if im not bothered about it. I’m focusing more on the present than anything. Sorry.

He’s not much different than canon!! I mean honestly idk what to put here.

WUKONG

The mountain he was trapped in I’m thinking might be changed to like a circus tent… agin the past is hard to figure out how to go with on theme and will probably stay allusive in any content I make.

MACAQUE

“The masked man”

There’s not point in trying to act like he’s gonna be some big reveal for you guys, but he will be for the characters!!

The skull on his hat + his mask are marks of LBD. He sheds them once he’s able to turn against her.

He did still die at some point that’s not changing

The Mayor is actually in governmental power in this AU. The police are all agents of his and lead our detectives/protags in weird unproductive ways that typically lead to a dead end or the masked man (Macaque)

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

RAMBLING ABOUT OCS: GIBBY EDITION

BASIC CONCEPT IDEA:

Before we start with the rambling, we first need to start with the JTTW character she is based on.

According to this article, there are four monkeys of havoc, Wukong and Macaque making up half of them. Horse Monkey will be a ramble for another time. Right now, we're putting our focus on the gibbon.

Lots of space-themes going on with this little guy. When I first read this bit, you know the first character that came into mind?

Now you know the reason behind Gibby's Halloween costume. So anyways, that collector inspiration already gave me a basic idea of what I wanted Gibby to be as a character. Bouncy little kid that has too much power for her own good.

Other inspirations for her character include Mebh from Wolfwalkers, Young Eda from The Owl House, Spinel from Steven Universe, and later on Kingsley from Yaelokre. The first two especially influenced Gibby's hair design, the third tracks with her ability to stretch her arms, and the last with a good chunk of her personality.

DESIGN:

Probably the first thing you'd notice from Gibby design-wise is her giant hair. I've decided to give her that hair to give her a sort of silhouette that resembles a shooting star. With Gibby herself, she is somewhere around two-three lego heads tall. I mean- gibbons are already teeny, and especially the young by default, so of course Gibby's gonna be fun-sized.

With her color palette, I chose colors from the more pastel-y side to emphasize that childlike wonder that's basically associated with her. Fun fact, her hair is a reference to how she was born ;)

Her clothes, I wanted it to look like something you'd find a FFM monkey demon wearing, while still referencing Gibby's former job as the Jade Court's jester by adding what's basically a faded version of the Celestial Realm's signature turquoise and gold, and putting jester-like design bits like the little bells and mismatched colors. I also want the outfit to look like something she made herself.

NOTES FURTHER INTO DEVELOPMENT:

I can't really say too much without spoiling some bits of Ship In A Bottle, so I'll try to avoid anything that borders too close to that. Instead, I'll list each of the details from the JTTW Gibbon's description + how it's applied to Gibby.

'Seize the sun and moon'

Okay, so she can't literally manipulate celestial bodies all over the place. Instead, it's reflected on her flutes. Yes, Bell's flutes are actually hers, and are just meant to serve as Bell's training wheels with his powers. The flutes have a second form that resembles sunwheels (Though it would be appropriate to call the moon flute's wheel form a moonwheel).

Usually only one flute can be used in this form at a time. Which of the flutes can be used in its wheel form depends on whether it's day and night (moonwheel only for night, sunwheel only for day). The only time both can be used in their wheel forms is during an eclipse, or if the flutes are being used by two people. (Something I need to update in Ship In A Bottle 💀)

I haven't designed the wheel forms yet, but the sunwheel has its rays more emphasized, and the moonwheel's appearance depends on the moon's current phase. The sunwheel also resembles a suncatcher, while the moonwheel resembles a dreamcatcher with magpie feathers (for Ship In A Bottle readers, no you can't make oaths with them).

'Shorten a thousand mountains'

Ooooohhh boy, this is one of the more spoilery bits. All I need to say is...there was a reason they had to trap Gibby in the calabash. Gibby's abilities that aren't mentioned anywhere else here fall under this category. That's how you know these are her more...unstable abilities. Thankfully she'd need a good supply of power to source the energy needed for all of that. Otherwise it'd be really...disastrous. An ability I can safely mention without spoilers tho, is her ability to...literally shorten mountains. And by that, I mean cause chunks of land to break off from the ground and remain floating in air. A lot of floating islands can be contributed to her.

'Distinguish the auspicious from the inauspicious'

Or in Gibby terms, her gut feelings. AKA her intuition. There is a small legend about her, where if she appears in your dreams, it's a sign of that dream possibly foretelling a future event. So she's basically an omen, good or bad depending on the dream. Being a dream-hopper, she tends to be more attracted to dreams that likelier to be a sign about the future.

Another small legend basically makes her a wishing star-like figure. If you wish upon a star, you're inviting Gibby to visit your dream (dream, as in your wish in this context).

In the waking world, her gut feelings are a bit weaker. Simply put, the closer that specific event is to happening, the stronger her gut feeling is. For an event that could happen maybe a year into the future, Gibby would only get a slight gut feeling that she could easily just wave off. For an event that's a second from happening, Gibby gets literal vision flashes before they actually happen. This makes her a really good dodger, making her difficult to attack.

'Manipulate planets and stars'

Again she can't just play pinball with celestial bodies whenever she wanted (and believe me, she does). The planet bit is less referenced compared to the star bit (for a reason involving another oc).

Reading this far into my rambling, you already see a lot of star motifs with Gibby. Well another is her ability to manipulate stardust, which can put people to sleep if she's not careful. She generates stardust using her flutes, and the stardust is how she makes clones of herself, and even other people. The stardust can act like pixie dust too. Sprinkle a bit of it on something, and that's how you make that something float (remember the floating islands?). Yes, she can manipulate normal sand too (also a reference to her birth).

Stars and other celestial bodies also make up a good chunk of how she can tell if her gut feelings are a false alarm or not, since the position of celestial bodies can predict someone's d*stiny in Chinese astrology.

Gibby as a celestial primate

Whereas Wukong is the sun and Macaque is the moon, Gibby is the stars. Whereas Wukong is the hero and Macaque is the warrior, Gibby is the jester. I like to think that there's this sort of duality when it comes to pairs of celestial primates.

Wukong represents the unchanging sun, and the fact that it never stops shining. You just can't help but notice him, but even dare to make eye contact, and you might mark yourself as an enemy.

Macaque represents the ever-changing moon, its different phases reflecting in how Macaque is better able to adjust to different situations. You don't always notice him. Sometimes he shines brightly with a dramatic display, and sometimes he's blended with the shadows of the night.

Gibby represents the playful stars. Her head is in the clouds and she's almost always literally floating. She embodies the whimsies of childhood, the curiosity of youth, and the world through the lens of a child.

So you already have a bit of a hint about down-to-earth Mandrill's character, hint hint nudge nudge ;)

When the animatronics were first being made, they programmed one, affectionately named Eclipse. It was a celestial themed jester that could act. Not only could it act but they gave it the unique ability to do a full on 'costume change' right there on stage! One minute, a bright happy Sun character who wants to play and create! Perfect for naming the 'energizing' sweets after! The next, a mischievous Moon character who wants to rest and relax! Perfect for naming the 'sleepy time' sweets after! And in between of course, it's original and true programming (though not quite as marketable as the characters it portrayed) which has great charisma on stage and interacts very well with the children. Ah but then live theatre isn't 'cool' is it? No no, kids want cartoons! But what to do with your expensive celestial jester animatronic? Well, the daycare is being opened, could we theme that on the Sun and Moon? Of course! But hey, aren't things getting a bit weird around here? Aren't the animatronics getting a bit...quirky? Isn't it frustrating that most if not all of the human staff are slowly being replaced by robots? Okay well it's got to work in the Daycare now, who cares. Damn, but they can't stop it switching between Sun and Moon now. It's like the AI is trying to turn those parts into their own things instead of just different characters Eclipse can mimic. Who knows why. A virus, maybe? Malfunction?

Sun seems anxious all the time, forcing strict rules onto the children, obssessed with cleaning, unsure if it's actually doing the job right so trying every possible game and craft idea, scaring the children by accident.

And Moon is...well, Moon is not child friendly any more it seems. Better replace that moving faceplate with something a little kid can't stick it's hand into. Better to add some generators (who cares about the danger!) so the lights always stay on and there's a quick backup. Okay so it's not perfect but it's too late now.

And now the whole place is coming down. Wreck and ruin. Body broken, splintering in full effect, fighting with each other, no longer who they are supposed to be. Everything hurts, the gears that don't turn right inside, the lonliness, the confusion, feeling torn apart...need to reset, need to reboot, need to be whole again.

Now, whole. Feeling a lot better. Still broken, but thinking as itself again. This was how they made it to be. But look at this place. Will it ever, really, be ready for children to come play in again? Well, only one way to find out...time to clean up.

AFK JOURNEY IS AMAZING

Okay, I'm really new to tumblr.

But I really want to voice my thoughts out regarding AFK Journey, an ethereal fantasy RPG game.

I will assume everyone who sees this post has played the game, so I won't refrain from spoilers. Currently, I am at the chapter after Vaduso Mountains, and have yet to enter. Just met Temesia and Lucious.

So, I will start with the game building itself.

I think the game being a strategy game where you fight 5vs5 thing, is a really unique thing. I've never played games like Genshin Impact, or Wuthering Waves, or Honkai or any other that I cannot list, but I'm pretty sure that you fight one at a time.

But AFK Journey allows you to fight using 5 characters at ONCE. Not only that, but it you can even AUTO PLAY. and I REALLY should work on getting myself to play manually just for practise.

Furthermore, I really like the fantasy setting.

It is so perfect for someone who genuinely wonders what it's like to live in a fantasy world. And I think while the world is possibly smaller than Genshin Impact, it somehow feels so big. Golden Wheatshire, the Dark Forest and Vaduso Mountains, they're all so natural to a fantasy setting.

The towns are also lovely. I liked when we reached Ivoryshade and Bryon being hit by a woman and he's like HELP ME.

Okay, next up is characters.

I think what makes AFK Journey more fantasized, is the fact there's factions (like races), that are COMPLETELY MADE UP. Yeah, you have the Lightbearers(humans), Wilders(hybrids), Maulers(double hybrids?) and Celestials.

But Graveborns and Hypogeans? That's COOL!

It's like, you could've regarded Hypogeans as Demons, but NO. They made a whole new word for it. (or maybe I just lack knowledge)

Speaking of characters, give this game a big thumbs up for using the word variety to a next level.

Every character you owe is just so unique, it almost feel like they're actual people. A young merchant with a duck. A maniacal jester who is never serious. An old granny with a living staff. TWO. HAMSTER FAMILARS AS YOUR SIDEKICK, one a KNIGHT and one a MAGE.

Maybe I need to do separate posts regarding each faction or something. ( I CAN'T WAIT TO TALK ABOUT PHRAESTO)

But the highlight for me that got me playing this....is our beloved MC, Magister Merlin.

Safe to say, I think in the cannon, Merlin is a man, as the character Merlin in AFK Arena is a man. And it really comforts me that we can choose Merlin's gender in AFK Journey.

Merlin is the usual overpowered MC troupe I guess, and that would've got me leaving. But no.

THEY MADE MERLIN HAVE AMNESIA.

The moment Dolly (we need to give Dolly a lot of credit, she's barely in the story) mentions Merlin being forgetful again, it kinda clicks your brain, that Merlin is just as clueless with you, THE PLAYER. It just allows you to experience Esperia along with Merlin. Both of you are just so confused.

How does this world works? Who am I? Who are my allies and enemies?

It made me feel like I'm Merlin myself, and over time, the name Merlin doesn't even sound weird as a girl. It just, grew on you. It's like the name Charlie can be both for male and female.

I just adore Merlin, both male or female.

NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN CUSTOMISE THEM.

Yeah, that's the whole reason I played the game. By customizing your character, it really feels like you're a part of the game. A part of their world, Esperia. I feel like I'm in my own fantasy world, and I thank Farlight Games for being such an amazing team and creating this game.

It's just right. It's just beautifully right.

(I hope this is a good post for a first try...)

Sun and Moon made their way to the cafeteria, where all sorts of foods were being served. Celestial Jesters are, inherently, omnivores, yet most prefer a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Sun skipped happily, darting over to the fruits section while Moon meandered over to a different part of the cafeteria, where they were serving human food specifically.

Sure, this is the first time a human is on the council, but human food is known the galaxy over for being some of the best shit you can find. Humans were known for their exotic tastes, and Moon couldn't help but like the strange foods that humans consumed.

Especially the meat replacements, those were the most unique things he has ever eaten.

He grabbed a tray and a plate, piling some tofu on it before he stopped. It was the human, and she was only a few feet away. She wore headphones over her ears, but what really caught his attention was the fact that her plate was piled high with sweets and meat. His eyes widened as he saw there was a whole steak among the cluster of food, and only when the plate was piled high did she go and sit down.

Moon hesitates for a moment, getting something called an 'Impossible Burger' that is made by 'Burger King' (he is not well versed on the food makers of humans), he walked over, clearing his throat when he was a few feet away.

She looked up from her food, taking her headphones off. "What's good?" She greeted, jerking her head up.

Moon was confused, but would ask about it later. "Um.... You... You sure do have a lot on your plate, even for a human." He stammered, adjusting the collar of his dark blue shirt nervously as he resisted the urge to blush.

She smiled, chuckling as she responded, "Eh, maybe I do. But I can't really tell when I'm hungry, so when I do remember to eat, I make sure to eat a lot." She tilted her head, giving a closed-eye smile, pulling her short sleeve up before she flexed her right bicep, which surprisingly jumped up a large degree, with some flexing happening in her forearm as well.

Moon's eyes widened as he tried not to blush. Oh god, she's so strong...

"And besides, these babies need ta eat." She chuckled, pulling her sleeve back down.

Sun skipped over, some honeydew on his plate. He also really liked human foods, they were a kind of sweet that he had yet to taste anywhere else.

"Hellooooo!" He chirped, setting his plate down on the table before plucking Moon's plate from his hands and setting it next to his plate. He leaned against Moon, who was only a tad taller. "Oh wow, that sure is a lot of food!" He gushed, grinning cheekily at Cadence.

"How much do y'all eat? I haven't yet found an article about your species." She replied, resting her chin on her interlocked hands as she quirked a brow curiously.

Sun chuckled, elbowing Moon lightly in the side as he replied, "Oh, we Celestial Jesters don't need much to stay going. We can actually convert motes of light into energy we can use, meaning we can go for long periods of time with no food as long as we are in a bright area!"

Cadence blinked, thinking for a moment before saying, "Oh, like photosynthesis?"

Sun and Moon blinked at the same time, both looking confused before Moon pulled out his trusty tablet and typed something. "Oh! Photosynthesis is the word humans use for the process which plants use sunlight to make energy." He said after a moment.

"Well, we need to go. We like to eat our food in our room." Sun said cheerily, picking up his and his brother's plates after waving, "Bye!" He turned and sauntered off.

"Uh, bye. See you later." Moon said, waving shyly before following his brother.

Back at their room, Sun plopped down onto the couch with a sigh, Moon sitting down moments after.

"Simp." Sun said simply, smirking as he took a bite of some honeydew.

Moon gasped, looking offended as he exclaimed, "Says the brother who liked it when she hit him with a thermos!"

Sun laughed, smirking as he replied, "Says the brother who would love to be beaten at wrestling by a female."

Moon huffed, his face turning a light blue from his blush as he stammered, "S-says the brother who would also love to be beaten by a female!"

Sun cackled, lightly kicking his feet.

I was a fan of FNAF since I was a kid. So when they announced Security Breach, I was so hyped :]

I am huge sucker for anything celestial themed, especially sun and moon counterparts. I'm also a HUGE fan of Jekyll and Hyde, so when I saw Sun switch to Moon, I was HOOKED. Oh, and the jester theme to them did it for me as well. They were practically made to bait me XD

I've been here since the game released but haven't made any content until recently

Nope, just watched gameplays :3

I haven't made a lot of content, so I don't really have a favorite. I do have a lot of stuff planned tho ;)

I LOVE looking for or reading about AUs people come up with. I know y/n content makes a majority of fics, so I don't read them often since I'm not a huge fan of romance. I love the different crime or cryptid AUs people make, also slice of life stories

My favorite AU at the moment is the Serial Killer AU by @/ayyy-imma-ninja, Daycare AU by @/cookiiemancer, and Mad Scientist AU by @/woolysstuff (I love your AUs!)

My own ocs? No. But I don't necessarily have a favorite when it comes to other people's. I love them all!

Bro, I loved their canon appearance. They look so funky that I fell in love with it instantly.

I don't know, I just love looking at the content people make and everyone's different interpretations. They make me smile and laugh, it's so charming

Honestly? Moon. I love Sun tho! He was my favorite initially but Moon slowly won me over.

ECLIPSE, MY BELOVED. The way my heart melted when we met him in the DLC XD

I haven't thought much of pre-glitch Sun, actually. I imagine it's still Sun, just less anxious and controlling

Pre-glitch Moon, the horrors you had to witness saddens me :[

I think they're two different beings in one body. And if it's the latter, I don't really care. Like I said earlier, I love all interpretations people come up with

I don't really have any complaints, this has been the most peaceful fan space I've ever been in (Thanks for that guys :3)

The DCA Fanzine that's in the works right now. I do plan to try to contribute. If not, I'll be excited to get the fanzine anyway

Honestly, yeah. I love their whimsy and grand behavior. I'd probably play along with their antics. Like Sun could keep me motivated to do my work and Moon would help me with my horrendous sleep schedule. In return, I'd be the best companion I could be >:)

ECLIPSE. WHAT IF ECLIPSE WAS THE DEFAULT PERSONALITY. THE DCA WAS A THEATER BOT, SO WHAT IF SUN AND MOON WERE JUST PERSONALITIES ECLIPSE MADE UP AS A BIT. Extinction Curse Session 2024/03/20

Once again, the time had come for the Circus of Wayward Wonders to move on.

A member of the maintenance crew piped up, "I know of a great location to head to next! My Aunt Estessa is the mayor of a town along the north coast of the island: Willowside! I hear they're dealing with some troubles, so they could really use some excitement right about now."

The entire circus took a short voyage on a ship (definitely not paid for by Opper Vandy) from Kerrick to the shores of Willowside. Eventually, a sandy beach came into view. A group of twenty people stood on the beach, waiting. But waiting for what? Surely the Circus of Wayward Wonders!

Midori, who had pushed herself to the top of the gangplank on the approach to the pier, strode down to the beach, elbows akimbo. She stopped on the sand in front of the crowd and raised her hands in the air dramatically. "Welcome, good people! We come in peace! Take us to your leader! We are the Circus of Wayward Wonders!"

Every single person on the beach ignored her. Midori's right eye started twitching.

Zookdar came up beside Midori. He suggested jokingly, "I say we hit 'em with a fireball. That'll show 'em respect!"

Midori whispered loudly out of the side of her mouth. "SHH! Zook! I think they can hear you! An' we need payin' customers!" She cleared her throat and tried a different approach:

Oh, gather 'round, both young and old, Upon this sandy shore so bold, The Circus of Wayward Wonders' tale, Is one of magic that never fails.

Step right up, the show's begun, Under the golden setting sun, A ship of dreams on sands alight, With wonders that will dazzle your sight.

From distant lands, through stormy skies, To entertain, to mystify, The acrobats and jesters dance, Inviting all to take a chance.

The waves applaud with every beat, As mysteries and music meet, A spectacle of sheer delight, That shines as bright as stars at night.

Step right up, don't be shy, The circus ship has sailed nigh, On this beach, we'll weave a spell, Of Wayward Wonders to retell.

So let the drums and trumpets sound, As our ship has run aground, To share with you our storied quest, The Circus of Wayward, simply the best.

Once the song had ended, Midori heard one person in the crowd clapping. "Oh, a fan! Perhaps somebody local with skills who may want to join our merry troupe? Please, come forward!"

The short-statured circus aficionado stepped forward. Midori squinted in the noontime sun to see. "Oh, little girl, would ya like to run away and join the circus?"

A high-pitched, melodic voice answered, "Yes, that's exactly what I want to do."

Lysander stated flatly, "Midori, she's clearly a halfling."

Midori replied, "Not a little girl?"

Lysander gestured at the short woman, more flustered, and responded, "Look at her hairy, bare feet!"

Midori shot back, "Are you sure?"

Lysander exclaimed, "You know what a halfling looks like! For Pharasma's sake, you worked with Alyssa Sunmeadow selling concessions at the Celestial Menagerie for a year!"

Midori turned to the halfling woman. "Sorry 'bout that. The sun got in my eyes. But, yes, let's tell ya about our circus!"

Zookdar offered, "We have doctors, lawyers, charlatans, crooks, thieves…."

The woman asked, "Have any books?"

Zookdar continued, "Some books. Gypsies, tramps, did I mention the thieves?"

The halfing replied, "Yeah, so, here's my deal. I have some sleight-of-hand skills. I can get along with your thieves. I have some magic and some musical talent as well. I go by 'Magical Myrrie.'"

Meanwhile, the rest of the crowd brushed past the circus folk to talk to the other people who had come in on the ship: merchants who were setting up shop right there on the beach as the crowd clamored to buy their wares. Some of the party joined them to see what was for sale.

Zookdar announced, "It's bread and foodstuffs."

Midori entreated the crowd, "You've had your bread, now it's time for the circus!" She put on a cheesy grin and gestured jazz hands at them, but, once again, they completely ignored her.

Galon mentioned, "Hey, this bread is very expensive. Crazy expensive. And it just looks like your run-of-the-mill loaves. What gives?"

His bags full of foodstuffs, a local man walked by the party and offered, "Hey, want to join the caravan? I assume you're heading into Willowside."

Galon replied, "Sure!"

The local man advised, "We'll be heading out in the next twenty minutes."

The caravan traveled down a windy dirt road through sand. The party noticed that the land was very dry, with mostly dead, withered little plants poking out here and there. No sound of insects cut through the heavy silence.

Zookdar decided to make small talk with locals to see what he could find out about the area. He found out that the local crops had not been doing well for some time. There has been a plague on a stretch of land to the southwest of the town that they call "The Welt." Willowside is now quite poor, as the townsfolk have been spending all of their savings on overpriced food.

Zookdar started probing, "So, is…anybody worried that you might be afflicted by an evil wizard?"

A local woman answered, "There was talk about it, but we didn't find one. We did try drowning, like, forty witches, but that didn't help. But you can't be too safe, am I right?"

Zookdar grimaced, but continued, "Anything else notable over the last few years?"

There was no answer.

"Would anybody give us more information for…one gold piece? And a silver?"

Midori helped out, "And three, no, FOUR coppers?"

The woman replied, "Nah."

Zookdar and Midori just shrugged and sat back to get comfortable for the rest of the ride.

As the caravan drew closer to town, Galon noticed a shrubbery moving in the distance. A scream erupted from the general direction, "Help! Help! The shrubbery is trying to eat me!"

Galon, Midori, and Zookdar jumped down from the cart and readied their weapons for action. It seemed that Lysander had fallen asleep in the back of the cart. In his place, Buffy strode over to the party, potions of healing clinking as they rotated to the front of her vending racks. Before they could act, however, one of the local men ran to the shrubbery to help. Shortly after, the party heard him scream, "Help! Help! I'm also being repressed!"

The party ran to the shrubbery to find three giant flytraps accosting two people.

Zookdar ran in with a battle cry to intimidate the foes.

One of the plants focused on Midori, hitting her and attempting to grab her. She narrowly avoided its grasp.

Galon flanked the plant attacking Midori and unleashed a flurry of blows on it, also narrowly avoiding capture.

Midori screeched at her opponent:

Listen here, you photosynthetic fiend, My friends and I won't be so easily gleaned. We'll trim your tendrils and your ego deflate, For we're the gardeners of our own fate!

The plant shook from the painful vibrations of Midori's attack.

All of the commotion had awoken Lysander, who ran to join the fray. Buffy, sensing that a party of four could handle things, retreated to the cart.

The plant then attacked Galon, grabbed him, and tried to swallow him whole! Galon barely grabbed on to the sides of the plant's maw to remain outside.

Lysander, not wanting to get too close, fired his Hex Blaster gun at the plant, but missed. Sighing, he reloaded.

Zookdar struck the giant flytrap with his flaming gnome flickmace, hitting it, knocking it down, and setting it on fire!

The battle continued on like this for several rounds, the giant flytraps grabbing and swallowing party members, while other party members fought back and freed their allies. All in all, Galon was swallowed twice, Zookdar was swallowed three times, and Midori was knocked out and swallowed once.

With his final blow, Galon killed the last giant flytrap, freeing everyone who had been trapped inside.

Midori shouted with disgust, then said, "C'mon, let's treat our wounds and continue on." She gathered the party into a tight square and began bandaging everyone up. Before they could rejoin the caravan, however, Galon noticed some footprints in the dry, cracked earth trailing off to the east. They looked like the tracks of a reptilian quadruped!

Hi you can take your time on this one . I’ve been wondering if you could redesign the star dress how would you redesign them ? (Me for an example I would given Lucy cat ears since loke has cat ears. Virgo star dress chains , Taurus more of gladiator look to be honest . Sagittarius dress not my fave outfit but I do adore her/his magic for that one . That’s all I can think of for now lol )

Whew! Thanks so much for this ask. I think I've mentioned them all over the place before, but I've never actually listed them one by one. I shall now be rambling like hell, be prepared. Before I ramble on mine though-- omg. those ideas are good. Loke's dress should definitely add cat ears that would be the cutest thing. Virgo's needs chains! Taurus' for a gladiator look, oh that would be cool.

Disclaimer: I think all the designs are decent enough and I do not actually want to change all of them. But since I've been asked if I could redesign them, I'll be listing ideas for all of them regardless if I like the originals or not. Also note that I’m not really addressing the fact that this is anime and of course some designs aren’t as detailed as they could be to be easier to draw, I’m just rambling, yeah? I’m also not thinking too much about powersets yet.

Alright, going in Zodiac order!

Aries. Definitely lots of wool. Either a soft sweater with puffed sleeves, or a cute short flowy winter cape. I'd like her dress to feel a bit defensive, so a puffy cape. I'd like to think of fluffy gloves and boots. Aries is a fairly modest character (she was uncomfortable with being asked to service men) so she'd be dressed comfortably, not showing any cleavage. I think a short dress would be cute, but for a battle dress for someone that fights like Lucy, I think Aries would go for comfy shorts like her own jumper-type clothes-- or maybe a skirt that fluffs at the end to complete the winter look?

Taurus. It's good as it is, perfect for Taurus. But she could also have a leather jacket, or alternatively, a checkered shirt tied like a crop top to complete the cowgirl look. I kind of like the asymmetrical pants, wish the shorter side was a bit longer. But short shorts or full-length ripped jeans would be good too. I love this dress as it is, so not much changes honestly. If I wanted to add anything it’d be more accessories and badges to make it look wild westy.

Gemini. I like the court jester/magician look a lot! Super unique. I do wish it were cuter as an outfit, though. They emphasise right now on being different colours, rather than asymmetrical. If I could choose, I'd make them clown or carnival-themed, sort of the cute little roadside magician or maybe even court jesters? Makeup, puffy frill sleeves, suspenders, mismatched high-knee patterned socks, toys and rainbows. They'd appear different each time--- sometimes she'll have a cape to hide a Doraemon-variety of things you just need, other times she'd maybe even wear a mascot head! This is the fun and jokester dress, and Lucy would have a hard time chewing them out for messing with her dress design, because 'awww, it'd have been funny!' 'NOT WHEN I'M FIGHTING IT'S NOT!'

Cancer. Love the Chinese vibes as they are, so if I redesign it, it'll be closer to Cancer's personality and image. Honestly, despite (or maybe because of) the first Celestial World Dress we see, I think when things came down to it for battle, Cancer would choose something that’s practical over something flowing and pretty. Nothing casual though, he’ll choose something that looks smart casual at least, something like a work uniform. I like to imagine a waist apron or belt to put small scissors in. In this outfit variety, I’d love for the main weapon to be huge scissors that Lucy has to make swing her body weight around.

Leo. Hear me out. If Loke could, he would go immediately for a wedding dress. But that aside, Leo’s dress is gorgeous enough as it is-- if I redesign it, I guess it’ll be for practicality? But anyways. Rather than just an evening gown-- I kind of want fur. Not soft, woolen ones like Aries, but fuzzy ones, you know, like the one he wore as Loke. I’d go for a more ‘punk’ image than a royal one to match his Loke phase. I’m thinking high collars lined with fur, long flowy vest but free arms and legs, because Leo is the leader and he’s extra like that. I’d like to think there are lion connotations everywhere, from gold accents to fur-lined skirt ends, cheetah prints, cat ears and a lion’s tail belt. Definitely stilettos, excess rings and accessories to maximise damage-making capability.

Virgo. Virgo doesn’t mind if she does panty flashes, so the maid uniform can stay. Though, definitely add chains, maybe wound around her arm. Since Virgo’s thing is that she’s a blatant cesspool of sexual kinks... well, first, I think I want to mention that Virgo doesn’t care about herself, but she cares about Lucy’s modesty to some degree (she covers Lucy’s skirt in the hgih winds of Eisenwald arc, leaving herself vulnerable). If she decides that Lucy should go more battle-based, first, I want Lucy to have a slightly longer maid dress, maybe slit in the side or have a design to tuck it up for battle so she can look unsuspecting and harmless when not fighting (something Virgo also does is look the part of being ‘undercover’). Lucy should have a variety of things hidden around her garter, from knives, to guns, to her keys. I love the idea of a combat maid,

Scorpio? I love the practicality of her current one, but Scorpio could also put her In rockstar clothing. Colourful neon cropped jackets, fishnets, plenty of loose accessories, bright-rimmed sand boots. High ponytail, definitely. Does this make sense for sand? No, so if we went on that route-- definitely armoured boots and arm guards, but go for a more flowy look, loose clothing for sand travel. Not too much though, maybe just baggy pants and a sash to keep it together, and a head scarf.

Sagittarius. The leprechaun/elf thing is super cute, wish it were a bit more unique than just whole thing green though. I’d give her a hooded cape, probably brown, and instead of just sleeves, a full archer’s brace on both arms. Of course, the open crotch is stupid on the original dress, give Lucy a short skirt that doesn’t show her underwear to the world. At least one more flap that goes over the front, I’m fine with the slits so they can look like tinkerbell. Though, to be unique, I’d like if her hair was down in a low and/or loose ponytail instead, to be under a hood.

Capricorn. I’d love if he went the businesswoman route, to look like a librarian or secretary. Glasses, horns, braids, all those can stay. Honestly I’m thinking something like a mysterious bookkeeper in a mystical library. I’d think he’d give her a longer dress, and Lucy would look really studious and modest. It’d really make her writer side shine, and that side of her never gets enough shine. I know Capricorn is a combat-type spirit, but Capricorn’s dress should have been more of an intellectual skill dress than a combat one-- maybe in this dress, she can think faster, decipher faster, and wield magic to almost the same level as maybe Jellal or Mystogan who can write high-level magic from scratch.

Aquarius. I need y’all to know that aquatic swimsuit designs have so much potential to look extravagant and gorgeous. I can’t believe Mashima would keep giving us disservices with swimsuits when there’s so much potential here. Like, why stop at just the swimsuit-- give us ocean-themed accesories like pearls, mermaid-themed styling choices. I’d love a long, billowing shawl around her, not just around the waist but around her as well. Mashima puts Lucy in a lot of twintails for these dresses and they’re cute, but I think a long mermaid-tail braid, or even a waterfall braid would be gorgeous.

Bonus: Libra. Definitely Arabian dancer clothes. This is one of the few that kind of go without saying. While Scorpio kind of has sand-weather middle-east clothing as well, I think it should primarily be Libra’s thing. Going full out in this aesthetic--- maybe to be modest, head scarves, layered sashes and skirts, and of course, a ton and a ton of shiny, jingling accessories on every limb.

Bonus: Pisces. Pisces would go with something skintight, maybe competitive swimwear or diving wetsuits. Definitely let’s not have the stupid open chest thing Mom Pisces has, but it’d be cool to see minimal armour pieces implemented into that kind of design, maybe the suit is made with material that feels like scales? I like to imagine this dress has two forms to be unique, since it’s the paired fish. One for offensive focus, one for defensive focus. Mom would have a long gorgeous dress that looks like water with plenty of layers, mother of the sea and all. Son would have the wetsuit armour. Of course, they’ll wield a trident. To set them apart from Aquarius, they would have fish-themed accessories specifically.

Bonus: Leo x Virgo.

I’ll think of these two ways, if Leo is taking the forefront of the concept, or if Virgo is. If Leo is, I think this can go full royal. Go from a maid outfit into practical royal-esque clothing, shorts and cravat, adorned with as many accessories and badges as possible because both Leo and Virgo are into that. To add in Leo’s animal connotations, a huge, royal cape with fur lining the ends, emblazoned with their logos on the back. Style her hair wild and powerful.

If Virgo’s taking charge, a cat-eared maid, complete with new animal prints, cuter apron, and shorter skirt for close-combat practicality.

Bonus: Aquarius x Scorpio.

Alright, here we go. They clash strangely because one of them wears water clothing and the other sand clothing. I’ll be thinking of Scorpio as the ‘sporty variety’, by the way.

If Aquarius is taking charge, a long shawl-type swimwear would work, with a high slit. I want to give her a long scorpion tail, but of course, a thin one that can look elegant, not the clunky armour in canon. I’d love if this gave her a bit of devilish connotations, and Aquarius would go on to look a little evil with dark, evil antagonist sort of vibe. I’m thinking of a ‘little devil’ vibe because Scorpio’s got the ‘punk rock’ thing going on, so if she doesn’t let out her infamous violent streak here, when?

And yes, all swimsuit material. Because swimsuits are versatile.

I think Scorpio would look for a bit more practicality, so competitive swimwear to emphasize the thighs. Since he wants to emphasize armour so much, let’s see how that can work. As seen here, Azur Lane knows the balance between clunky metal and minimal fabric. So the main problem of the canon AxS dress is the metal parts are way too big and impractical. Give Lucy a smaller tail. Ditch the gauntlets and boots, or at make them much less clunky, leading in to high stockings and sleeve gloves. Honestly, we don’t need the tail for her-- make it a whip sword. Give Lucy a huge clunky sword that can extend like Renji Abarai’s sword, shaped like Scorpio’s tail.

Bonus: Aquarius x Gemini.

If Aquarius’s taking charge, it’ll be a mermaid tail dress, alternatively layered with blue and white. Definitely needs a train, frilled like waves behind her. I’m thinking a kind of cartoon queen dress, the kind with really high collars that frame around the head? I think snow white had a bit of it? The original gemini dress has it too. That, plus something like the headdress part too, all patterned and adorned to give the Gemini court jester look.

If Gemini’s taking charge, then I’m thinking a cuter direction-- a balloon skirt, the type that are round and puffy like a tutu or something with frills around the edges? Not sure if you understand what I mean, but balloon shorts is fine, point is, with string adornments it could look like a jellyfish. There are swimsuits in this sort of design, too, so it also fits with Aquarius! Maybe if we wanna go for sexy, complete this design with a tube top + a bit of a frill choker in Gemini colours.

Bonus: Etc ideas. These are a bit messy.

Gemini with anyone else-- starting with Cancer, they’ll go on the magic Kaito route with the stage magician look, suit and tailcoat, top hat, etc. Of course keep the split-colour theming. For Aries, definitely put her right into a mascot costume. I would think mixing with Virgo would give us a strange butler-maid mix, maybe even literally split down the middle. For Sagittarius, go full on with the leprechaun theme, shorts and suits and hat and toe boots and all.

For Capricorn, Lucy should transition from modest librarian to sexy librarian. Yes, I just said that. Gemini would piss Capricorn off and that’s the point, I want to see it. It would be the funniest damn thing because Lucy would love it while Capricorn loses his mind about immodesty. I like to imagine it happening and Capricorn just freezing in the middle of battle to go “GEMINI, WHAT DID I SAY.” Jokes aside, a warlock coat or something in a dracula direction would be incredibly cool as well.

Also, Gemini and Pisces would be interesting. I’m thinking a stuntman-type concept, but that’s about it for what I can think of now.

I think Scorpio on a delinquent route would mesh amazingly with Aries-- a fun, comfortable casual fit, with woolen hoodies, sweater sleeves, fun, pastel frills, loose socks and sneakers, something right out of instagram outfit aesthetics. Leo would add animal designs on it. Taurus would have so much fun with this clothing theme, especially if we ignore practicality. Cancer and Scorpio can go in a marching band direction.

Scorpio would probably fit amazingly with Libra, because they’re both middle-eastern inspirations, design-wise. I’m thinking a ‘wandering Egyptian bard’ sort of look, traveller’s cloaks, sashes. But I think I’ll use the ‘rockstar’ theme for the others because it’ll clash too much with Libra.

I’d like to think Aries is most concerned about looking comfortable over genuine practicality. Anything she gives would look like something people would actually wear on the daily, because Aries is modest and comfy and cute and she’s very concerned about that above all else.

I’m thinking for an Aquarius mix, she would go for a one-piece dress type swimsuit, with frills instead of wool since that won’t mix well with water. There’s be plenty of sheep designs, though, layers of frills to look fluffy enough. For Capricorn, an old-fashioned peasant dress. I think it’d be cute if Cancer mixes and just straight up turns Lucy into an actual magical girl design. For Virgo who’s in charge of royal connotations today, I’m thinking a unicorn princess vibe.

Generally, I’d think putting Leo with anyone would give them animal features. Scorpio? Ah, add some cute cat ears on that hoodie, please. For Aries, I think ditch the royal connotations and go straight up animal costume. Fluffy woolen dresses, mittens, boots, cat ears, and of course, comfy shorts so Lucy can go full animal. Cancer or Taurus? Ah, get ready for one sexy cat...

Libra? Oh dear, this needs to be sexy, put some animal prints and fur on all of that, please. Definitely mix the ‘sexy’ aspect of Libra with the punk side of Leo-- that means animals stripes! Loke wears tiger stripes sometimes on his tie, so it’s fair. Cheetah prints, etc, those things would be cute. Definitely something easy to move in like dancer clothing, but more practical eg less sashes, more fur. But definitely tons of accessories for the same reason as the Leo clothes.

Aquarius with anyone shouldn’t immediately go to swimsuits, it should go to ‘sea connotations’ in general. Sea accessories and wave-like frills, swimsuit fabrics, bikini tops or swimsuits hidden underneath more practical clothing, etc. For a Cancer mix, marine navy uniforms. I think Leo would add a formal captain’s coat, but Virgo would go with a corset and petticoat.

For those that remain swimsuits, they could add their own flair to it, Sagittarius could make it more fairy-like, water spirits or jellyfish-like (I’m making his thing the ‘fantasy archetypes’). I think Capricorn will give Lucy a long, formal mermaid hem dress, complete with a boa.

But okay, I have one thing I’m very firm on: Aquarius and Taurus? It needs to be a pirate-themed swimsuit, complete with the hat. IT HAS TO BE, okay? It’s a perfect mix of concepts. Sea bandits, land pirates, cowboys, it just works.

I like to think Cancer turns everyone into a uniform of some sort. I just think it’d be a cute theme to have since he’s always in smart casual. For Virgo, I’d think he’d go the boyish route, with a sort of young prince’s formal clothing, coat and double-breasted and all. Capricorn, I think it would be interesting to go for a mage priest-type costume. For Taurus, definitely full on cheerleader. I definitely want to make a point that her hair needs to be absolutely gorgeous in all of these.

For Sagittarius-Cancer specifically, hear me out... equestrian clothing.

I’d like to think Taurus adds a country vibe to most things. For things he can’t country like the royal suits or Scorpio’s modern fits, he’ll find a way to double up the sexy instead, like off-shouldering maid dresses for Virgo. He’d also make a sexy librarian dress for Capricorn to piss him off, though I think he won’t change it even if Capricorn complains, unlike Gemini.

He’d clash strangely with Aries, but I think they’ll find a compromise on the little red riding hood route.

I want Virgo to hold most of the royal connotations, honestly, just to set her apart from the others that are also in formal-looking suits. A mix with Libra could make something like an Arabian queen.

But specifically, I think Virgo and Capricorn will give Lucy a formal, noble lady’s dress. Something befitting of a fairy tale princess.

To set Sagittarius apart, I want him to have all kinds of fantasy elements in his dresses, not just elves. With Virgo, he’ll make a rogue hunter. With Leo, a cute werewolf (lion?). Aries can have full control of this one, a simple black dress with plenty of wool at the ends and the collar, maybe even give Lucy actual horns and style her hair into curls. Of course, all of them will definitely have bows and arrows in some form or another, eg Taurus would be a wild west gunslinger with crossbows? Oh and, magical girl phase #2 with Sagittarius and Cancer, without wool though.

And Gemini would be just a straight up flamboyant clown, high-collar cloak, two-toned masquerade mask, top hat. Speaking of masquerade, a Capricorn mix could be a full on masquerade theme, evening gown and all.

Alright, I’m exhausted, I had way too much fun with these.

To summarize.

Aries would turn everything wooly, pastel, fluffy, and comfortable.

Taurus would dial up the sexy x2, or he would give things country, old fashioned- kinda vibes including cowboys, pirates, country girl/farmer/peasant, etc.

Gemini would take everything in a magician or amusement park clown direction, including magical girls, court jesters, pierrots, masquerades.

Cancer would turn everything into a uniform of some sort. (Work uniforms, not school uniforms). His theme would be looking professional.

Leo turns everything in wild, delinquent, and animalistic theming, with a bit of an authoritative ‘leader of the bad boys’ vibe.

Virgo holds all of the royal connotations, from maids to knights, to princesses.

Scorpio takes a punk, rockstar direction. Musical vibes would be his thing, from fantasy bards to marching bands to opera singers.

Sagittarius would have all of the fantasy connotations. Starting with elves and leprechauns, to RPG roles like hunter, werewolf, fairies.

Capricorn would have modesty as his main focus, ‘pride of a noble’ and all. He would focus on making Lucy look fit for an audience with the king, responsible and well-kempt at all times. This is different from Cancer in that Lucy would be the served instead of the one serving, and differs from Virgo in that it doesn’t go as far as ‘royal’. Just noble, beautiful, and proud as a Heartfilia. He’s a bit old-fashioned, too.

Aquarius would be the sea, of course. Swimsuits, and everything of a marine connotation including navy uniforms, pirates, and mermaid hem dresses.

Libra would take everything in a middle-eastern inspiration, Arabian kinda.

Pisces would be marine connotations as well, but they’ll take it in a specifically leotard-armour inspiration, kinda like most mecha anime girls.

So, I'm super new to the FNAF fandom. Like, got into it because Security Breach came out. I knew people who've played it before and all that good jazz, but I know almost none of the official lore beyond all of the Vanny stuff.

Given that, Sun and Moon have been my FAVORITES (i've done some research) of all of the characters so far. I read a LOT. I read.. way too much fanfiction.

In order to essentially create my characterizations for Sun/Moon, I consume a shit-ton of media about them. Read fanfictions, look at art, cosplays, designs- and I slowly start to build them from the ground up.

I adapt headcanons from many different places and assume them for my versions of Sun and Moon. Sun's manner of speaking is actually pretty parallel to a fic that I read once. If I could remember the name, I would read it again, but I just remember being so struck by the happy 'child-speak' manner that this author gave Sun, so I decided to use it.

Lots of people tend to see Moon as a character being kind of sadistic and hurtful, and while that's its own breed, I don't tend to see him that way?? I've always imagined him pre-glitch to be very caring, and sweet, and non-provocative. The fact that he speaks like he does is simply out of how Moon acting like an absolute gentleman makes my heart do loops.

I've also been off-handedly writing for years and years, and so being a complete bookworm, I love writing descriptively, and for Sun and Moon to be so polarized in their mannerisms really makes it fun to attempt to develop characteristics to them that make them unique as people.

A lot of off-handed inspiration comes just from, like I said, pieces of media, such as @8um8ble8ee 's Sun/Moon art (GOD the Sun in a t-shirt pics I die for) and @sunshineistyping 's writing pieces (curse your stripper AU, Sunshine, curse it all to hell). Fleshing out things like designs was harder, especially given that some people have really solid designs and mannerisms for their Suns and Moons that give me complete envy and want to re-do my entire personas for them (I'm looking at you, @hunny-bxscuit and @shandzii and @pixelchills).

From there, it's a matter of making their personas kind of A), fit with my plotline(s), and B), fleshing out what I would like to see in them (Moon speaking in a very sophisticated, calculated manner).

For my Mermay AU, Once At Sea, I had the thought of Sunny being blind for absolutely no reason, I just thought that it would be an interesting little twist to add, especially with the potential co-dependency on Moon factor. A lot of that AU I did on the fly, since I heard @Bamsara was making a Mermay fanfic too. Many, MANY parts, however, were inspired by my favorite romance trilogy, called Undertow By Michael Buckley. It's also about a girl (mine's GN!, though) from a seaside town and it involves mer-people, though sort of unconventionally... Trust me, it's a really good read.

Me and Bam's first chapters came out within DAYS of each other, and so much of our stories were similar even though I only JUST got around to reading Celestial Omens, which is absolutely insane. We both have old men figures (Gramps and Mr. Agupta), we both have legends or 'omens' surrounding our fish boys (the Sunfish legend and the 'omens' tale by Gramps), at least one of our fish boys ends up captured in a net (in my case, it's Moon in a boat, but for Bam it was both on the beach), and BOTH of our reader inserts live on a seaside town WITH A HOUSE OVERLOOKING THE BEACH. I was so surprised because I legitimately had no way of copying them, AHAHAHA-

But overall, it's really a matter of figuring out what you'd like to see in your characters, having the drive and the means to see it through, and a bit of a crafty hand if you're taking a crack at drawing or writing about them.

TL;DR: I consumed a bunch of different types of media in order to figure out what I wanted for my versions of Sun/Moon. Overall, it's a mix of finding what you want and figuring out what out of the community you want to combine to make the ultimate Sun or Moon!
