Brrr…
I attended TroutFest 2024 in Wautoma today. Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited did an excellent job with that. After all that talking about trout, I couldn’t leave central Wisconsin without actually doing a little trout fishing.
After the event, I jumped into the Pine River upstream of where I left off last time. It felt really cold. Even though it was in the upper 20s °F, the wind was blowing and that drove the wind chill down. My hands were too frozen to cast accurately or operate my camera well. I guess I’ve been spoiled this year - this was the first time I’ve fished below freezing. When I walked back to the car, my boot laces and wader legs froze so solidly that I couldn’t get them off.
For all that effort, all I got was one measly brown trout. But I did see quite a few.

"We all cry in private. But not in front of the boys. Never in front of the boys.” - June Wandrey: “An eighteen year old boy is carried into the shock ward, and he looks up at me trustingly asking, “How am I doing, nurse?” I just kiss his forehead and say, “You are doing just fine soldier.” He smiles sweetly and says, “I was just checking,” then he dies. We all cry in private. But not in front of the boys. Never in front of the boys.” - June Wandrey
June Wandrey Mann (1920–2005) was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from Wautoma, Wisconsin. She was the author of Bedpan Commando, an account of her military service in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany from 1942 to 1946, during which she was awarded eight battle stars.

Wisconsin Republicans work to impose their agenda
Wisconsin Republican state lawmakers have just passed a bill that would ban local governments, be it counties, cities or towns, from requiring contractors that choose to work on taxpayer funded projects, to follow project labor agreements. These agreements deal with requirements for the contractor, again who chooses to work/ bid on a particular project, to work with unions or union workers.
Now, I understand some people don't like unions, though the middle class in America was built on the backs of union membership, but that shouldn't be an issue for state politicians. If a project isn't receiving state funding than it is absurd for state politicians to dictate to local governments & residents, how they can spend their local tax-dollars.
If the residents of a town or city, be it Milwaukee, Oshkosh or South Milwaukee don't like how these dollars are spent, they can always vote those officials out. In the 2016 election cycle over $800,000 in political contributions was given from construction related interests to the campaigns (directly or indirectly) of Wisconsin state legislative candidates.
How well this $800,000 was leveraged by construction interests to get politicians to vote to gut pro-union agreements, it is impossible to say, but it would be folly, I believe, to say it had no effect. Republicans frequently talk about states' rights but seem to want to overturn decisions by local governments. This is one of the worst abuses I have ever seen & the politicians who voted for it should be ashamed. This is not the only shameful act of state politicians.
Another & even worse case was concerning an out of state paint manufacturer from New Hampshire who gave $750,000 to a Wisconsin  group that ran ads in support of many of these same legislators.  This paint maker after the victory of these candidates, received retroactive immunity (by many of the same Wisconsin lawmakers it helped win) for legal liability from lead poisoning.
Lead poisoning, especially from lead paint, continues to harm children in Wisconsin to today. If these are our state leaders, we can and should do better come the next elections.

Labor Day 2022
Today is Labor Day, a holiday in celebration of the workers of the United States and the struggle of the Labor Movement for the rights and freedoms workers have today. It is a good day to remember that for many the fight is not over, and that we should support our fellow workers whenever possible.Â
In that light, we’re sharing Lucha por la Justicia / Struggle for Justice published by the Wisconsin Labor History Society in 1998. The book is about the migrant farm worker labor movement in Wisconsin, and in particular strikes and boycotts of the mid-1960s. Agricultural workers, and especially those who are migrant workers, are one of the least protected groups of workers in the country. in 1966, migrant workers in Wisconsin marched 80 miles from Wautoma to Madison to present their demands to the state government. Among their demands were improved housing, a $1.25 minimum hourly wage, and accident and hospitalization insurance. Agricultural workers in Wisconsin also participated in and raised awareness for the Delano Grape Strike of the late 1960s.
Just last week, members of United Farm Workers union in California marched 335 miles from Delano to Sacramento in support of a bill that would make it easier for agricultural workers in the state to vote in union elections. Currently they can only vote in person in union elections, which creates opportunities for retaliation and intimidation by farm owners against those who vote to unionize and prevents migrant workers from voting if they are not in the state at the time of the election. Renowned internet labor supporter and cat Jorts supported their march by marching his furry little paws around his place of employment (which is unionized, fyi). Unions are one of the best ways for workers to make sure that they are not exploited and allow them to collectively bargain with their bosses for fair wages and treatment.
So, as we enjoy our long weekend and most likely grill some burgers and hotdogs and enjoy some sweet corn from a roadside stand, let’s not forget the workers who literally make it possible for us to have food on our tables (or any workers!).Â

West Branch of the White River
This week the temperatures dropped enough to make camping and fishing reasonable again. On Monday after a quick dental appointment in the morning I headed up north.
I stopped in Wautoma for lunch at Milty Wilty and then stopped at a far upstream section of the West Branch. It was bright and sunny and most of the fish were smart enough to hide. I caught a brook trout first. Usually brookies are the hardest to find on this stream, so I think catching one right off is a sign that the efforts of TU CARES are bearing fruit.
I only caught caught one more trout over the course of the afternoon, a brown. But spending time in the great outdoors put me in a pretty good mood for the hike back to the car.
I drove up to Hartman Creek to set up camp and spend the night there.
