On one hand living in the middle of nowhere in the Canadian Rockies gave me a spectacular light show for four consecutive hours last night. On the other hand there was only half an hour between when the pink and green swirling lights finally stopped and when the sun started to rise, and the birds completely missed the memo that night happened at all, and I have work today.

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park…one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I’ve ever traveled to. Highly recommended!!
CHIEF MOUNTAIN, also known as Nínaiistáko in Blackfoot or "Old Chief" in English, is a prominent peak located on the border of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana, United States, and Alberta, Canada. It is considered one of the most sacred sites for the Blackfeet Nation and holds significant cultural and spiritual importance.
The mountain and its surrounding area are part of the Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, jointly designated as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. This designation reflects the cross-border cooperation between the United States and Canada in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the region, including the sacred significance of the peak to indigenous peoples..

Sunset over St. Mary: Glacier National Park (pictured above at Saint Mary Lake, Montana) was the world’s first International Peace Park, extending from the U.S. into Canada where it becomes Waterton Lakes National Park. With more than a million acres in northern Montana, the park is nicknamed the “Crown of the Continent.”

I live in Southern Alberta Canada, which is significantly bigger than a lot of countries and has a smaller population than most big cities. Here there is - in order of how much land they cover - giant 'parks', countless farms, towns that don't have more than 5k people, like 3 'big' cities, and Indigenous Reservations that overlap with all four of these.
For the most part the wildlife IS in the parks, however so are we. The city I grew up in contains one of the largest urban parks in North America, and my parents still live literally on the border of the park. The city I live in for university is both smaller and has a smaller 'park' but again I literally live on the border between this park and the edge of town. And in the summers I live in Waterton & Glacier International Peace Park which is essentially just a huge area in the Rocky Mountains in the middle of absolutely nowhere that both Canada and the US have agreed not to destroy.
I was 4yo the first time a deer tried to trample me. I was 12yo the first time a pack of coyotes stalked me while I was doing my paper route. I literally ran into a bear while hiking alone at 16yo and simply nodded to it, and we parted ways. I had my lunch stolen regularly by the fox living in my backyard when I was 19. I tripped over a big horn sheep that was sleeping on my front step on my way to work one morning this past summer. Swerving your car to avoid deer is an hourly occurrence on average, and I even had to slow down while a pair of moose ran down the road in front of me once this summer. Entire herds of deer getting into his backyard and eating his garden is my one grandpa's biggest annoyance in life, while my other grandpa is much more annoyed at not being able to water ski when there are bears swimming 5ft from the boat. One of my uncles was stalked by a cougar while riding his bike once, and it's about a yearly occurrence that one leaves the park by my parents house and just wanders the suburbs for a couple weeks before animal control gets it back in the park.
So yeah, we try to keep most animals in the 'parks' same as other countries do, but our parks are most of the land including where we live, so animals just live here same as we do and we've learned to live alongside them without major issues (most of the time)
A BEAR ATE MY BEST HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER.
Rude.

Got an Evacuation Notice about an hour and a half ago due to wildfire proximity. Its about 5km away, and with very little left to burn after last years fires it hopefully wont get to the town. Don't have to leave yet, but if the order is given I'll have maximum an hour to get out.

Title: Digitally Preserving Culturally Modified Trees at Kootenai Brown's Homestead Time: 12 noon to 12:50 p.m. Presenters: Dr. Peter Dawson, Head. Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Calgary; Edwin Knox, retired Parks Canada Cultural Resource Management Program Lead - Waterton Lakes Presentation Description: In the study and recording of the Kootenai Brown 1906-1913 homestead/cabin location, the site was found to include numerous "culturally modified aspen trees", including a Joe Cosley tree ...initials "JC", trademark "heart" and "29" (1929). The recording of "Poplar Grove" was made by Doctor Peter Dawson and his team from the University of Calgary Department of Anthropology and Archaeology using 3-D laser photography, as part of a program of digital preservation of Alberta heritage at risk. The effort includes collaboration with Parks Canada, Nature Conservancy Canada, Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association and the Alberta Heritage Conservation group. The original homestead cabin still stands - a feature of the pioneer museum in Pincher Creek. Registration Link:

Upper Waterton Lake (Explore October 23, 2021) by Lisa Nixon Via Flickr: The winds at Upper Waterton Lake had reportedly reached 45 km/h that day. It was really exciting to watch the dramatic changing light as it hit the peaks. This view was taken from the Prince of Wales Hotel. Waterton Lakes National Park is nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Given the designation of International Peace Park it is one of the lesser known parks in Alberta but the scenery is outstanding, hiking is world renowned, and wildlife are in abundance. This past August, Waterton Lakes National Park and its neighbour to the south, Glacier National Park, received a designation for an International Dark Sky Park. www.lisanixon.ca

CHARACTER BIO: LETHBRIDGE
[ Bio ] [ [ Relationships ] [ Trivia ]
Notes:
One fact I was originally going to put on here was that Lethbridge has one of North America’s largest urban parks systems. The only thing that stopped me is that another city I’ll be making a ref for holds the record for largest urban park system in North America. :^)
Maybe I’m a weirdo for continually stumbling upon waste management pages for cities and finding them adorable, but look. (the gif!! i’m)
Oddly enough, I can’t find the Environment Canada study that the city mentions re: Lethbridge is the eigth windiest city, and I’m not sure what measurement they’re using. I have also read that Lethbridge is the second windiest city after St. John’s based solely on the number of windy days in a year, and Calgary being the country’s windiest major city.
Transcription below the cut.
The Lethbridge Viaduct, also known as the High Level Bridge, was finished in 1909. It is the longest and the tallest steel trestle bridge in the world!
Lethbridge is the self proclaimed irrigation capital of Canada. Irrigation is so important to the region that trees barely existed outside of the river valley until citizens began to plant them.
Apart from the generous amount of sunlight Lethbridge receives year round, it is also boasts one of the warmest winters in Canada due to the arid climate and chinook winds.
Despite its reputation, Lethbridge is only the eighth windiest city in the country. The city website advises residents on how to keep their recycling bin from blowing away accordingly.
Lethbridge's Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden was a project for Canada's 1967 Centennial. The garden is designed to celebrate the cultural contributions of Japanese-Canadians as well as the beauty of Lethbridge's natural geography.
Lethbridge had numerous names in its history and was was briefly known as Coalbanks when it was established as Alberta's first coal mining community. The name of the area in many First Nations languages also describes the rich deposits of coal here.
Lethbridge is in close proximity to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, and Waterton Glacier International Peace Park.
