logging back onto this website to say that while i dont think (???) it was intentionally done, the scene before their "last day" where frank is working on a portrait of bill, reminded me of keith haring's "unfinished painting"

comparison here before i explain:

keith haring's painting was purposely made to look incomplete. haring was diagnosed with HIV in late 1988, and died in early 1990, at the age of 31. the painting is a self portrait, hitting us with the gut-punch reality of how the aids-epidemic robbed haring of the right to finish his own story. the overwhelming amount of empty space is a glaring reminder that haring didn't just have a short life, he had an incomplete one. the piece points to all that empty space and says: this should have been filled out. this should all have been my art, my story, and my space. by claiming this empty space, haring claimed the empty space of his unlived life, that was taken from him and so many other people, by a negligent and homophobic society that refused to care about the pandemic ravaging an entire community worldwide.

now back to my original point: like i said, im really not sure if this was intentionally done by the show. but when i was watching this episode and i saw this scene, i immediately thought of this painting. the blue color of the eye trailing off onto the blank part of the canvas is, at least to me, a strong visual parallel.

and i feel like this visual parallel highlights some very important thematic parallels as well, which deserve to be talked about. in the show, the outbreak starts in 2003 which means that bill and frank have both lived through the aids-epidemic. they have seen people like them die. they have experienced the hatred and isolation that came with it. you could speculate and read into things ad nauseaum, but i thinks it's safe to say that in this place and time, this also plays into how careful and hesitant they are, when they first start to show intimacy with each other. in their world, they didn't even get to experience the legalization of gay marriage.

seeing as this show takes place during another, fictional, pandemic, airing at a time where the real world has just faced another actual pandemic, it is impossible to ignore this aspect of their story.

these two characters however, are not destroyed by the outbreak in the show. they find each other, they experience freedom, love, and a full life together. their life is not cut short.

in an absurd twist of fate, when the rest of the world is finally forced to experience what it's like to be abandoned by your government during a devastating epidemic, this is when these two people find happiness. they get to go running, and have fights, and grow strawberries, and have friends over for dinner.

and after spending nearly twenty years together, frank spends his last time working not on a self portrait, but on a portrait of bill, the love of his life. this is the sort of thing that rightfully should have filled the empty space of haring's work. finding love(s) spending your time together, that is a life lived.

and yet frank's painting is unfinished, because of course we are never truly done living. we are never truly done loving. but he got so much more time, so much more story, than the people we lost to the aids epidemic, which the trailing off blue paint reminds us of.

at the same time their house is absolute filled with all the paintings that frank did finish, showing us all the good days he got with bill. and in a way, i feel like that is the show being very aware of what it is: a complete, beautiful story about two men loving each other, in a world that sorely lacks these stories. a world where we had so many unfinished, incomplete lives, that we lack an entire generation of older gay men.

and even though i was completely reduced to tears by the end of this episode, the ending still filled me with some sort of mournful joy. because yes, even though it was incredibly sad to see their last day, these two men got to fill so much of their empty space. they got to experience love, and they got to live their life. like bill says: "im old. im satisfied. and you were purpose."

so many people didn't get that. keith haring didn't get that. a whole generation of queer people didn't get that. that makes this episode so much more moving for me, because it is not just an incredibly beautiful love story, but it is an incredibly beautiful love story that the world should rightfully have seen millions more of. but all those lives were incomplete.

so with the undeniable, but unspoken, presence of the aids epidemic in the narrative of these characters, this visual reference to keith haring and aids, purposeful or not, is incredibly meaningful.

My JRWI Wonderlust e8 brain dump 🎀

SPOILERS AHEAD SO PLEASE DON'T GO PAST IF U HAVENT WATCHED OR DON'T WANT SPOLIERSSSS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNEDDDDD

ok chat so after watching that I definitelyyy have some thoughts as to what the actual fuck is happening.

starting with our favorite silly man, Troy. this episode was definitely a good showcase of not only his flaws but also how he is positively changing for "the sake of the team". in the first bit of the episode, he was very considerate and caring with runt and blink, giving his extra clothing he could have worn instead of his uniform and even his special steamsledding goggles he always wears to runt. while he is still a selfish person he is making change and thinking about others which is the start to being a better person. i can see where his reaction is coming from in the fight with lint, he quite literally left for two days and it looks like during that time nobody really went to look for him. not only that but in 48 hours he was replaced, which is crazy to think about. he is so unskilled and just unfit to be team captain that in 48 hours he was replaced. if you look at troys mannerisms and his thinking patterns he is constantly trying to convince people that he is special or needed. he seeks that approval and that gratification, which is why seeing lint take his spot is so devastating to him. without that validation he is nothing, he doesn't matter. and its not like he isn't proud of lint, it is literally stated that tears start to well up in his eyes out of joy for his friend making it as team captain. The reason he reacts so negatively is because being team captain and being a steamsledder is the last thing that made troy, well troy. He says so himself, that without the team is he anything? he even starts to hold little to no value to his steamsled, which he literally ALMOST KILLED SOMEBODY OVER MULTIPLE TIMES. everybody likes to think that they have a purpose, but this poor man has been so conditioned that he is only good for steamsledding and fighting that without the team and the things he was raised for he has no goal, no purpose, and he just breaks. which is why i have little to no ill feelings towards him in that situation. i say little to none because, yeah he could have been nicer to lint but oh well, nobody's perfect. also mans is absolutely concussed, like somebody check if his brain is bleeding at this point my god. After the lint altercation, troy becomes increasingly more violent in his words, however unlike oasis flora he doesn't actually do anything too bad anybody, he's just a lot more violent verbally and a bit less physically. its weird and its also cool because it shows his character progression after the conversation with runt and blink in e7. HOWEVER THIS TIES IN WELL TO THE CLOCKWORK TROY THEORY BECAUSE THE SOLDIERS CANT HURT THE UPLANDERS, SO HE WOULDN'T HURT THE PEOPLE UP THERE BECAUSE HE SEES THEM AS COMMONERS UNLIKE THE HYBRIDS (or whatever that kid called them, i should write that down) ahem. idk what took over me there. none the less, troy was very interesting this episode and im excited to see where this will go.

next i wanna talk about blink, our favorite owl guy. i feel like he is just loosing his morals, and as he is around troy he's adopting the very habits he looked down on him for. blink's character is a very interesting one as he started with being very rigged and having a "i have to do good and fix everything" mindset and i cant tell if it's the character being stretched or just the campaign being very wobbly (idk how else to describe it) that is causing this change in him. Wonderlust is a fascinating campaign as it is not very serious at all most times and i cant tell if blink is straying from his morals so far because of a character arch or because of the show itself. i want it to be because of a character arch but considering we are only 8 episodes in and oh so far from where we started i'm unsure. i'm a little upset at this episode in general because it kinda did this to runt too, where she was a lot more violent than normal, and i'm unsure if it is because of the show or just the circumstances the characters are under. now that i'm looking at it, an explanation could be because of how troy explained up there to be, the two of them are trying to act like troy to fit in, but then again troy is toning down the violence and aggression so idfk guys. back to blink, he is just so (idk how else to say it) weird this episode. i hope he's back to his little anxiety silly self next episode and that he has more of a plot relevance, but i know he most likely wont because were still on the upland area but oh well

my next little paragraph will be about my darling runt. We found out about her family a bit this episode, which i missed at first (i listened to it twice, about to listen to my third listen through) but am glad i caught. We learn that her parents and siblings exist but that they kinda just fucked off and left her alone, which would make sense why she doesn't know how to talk about her emotions and why she calls everything a trauma dump. because she grew up with an emotionally unavailable family that left her alone and abandoned her (i'd assume thats what happened from how she described them) she literally doesn't know how to talk about how she feels. she thinks its all unimportant and just goes on with her life. not much happened with runt this episode and similarly to blink, the few times she does have talking moments its a little out of character. i love how her and blink stood up for troy and were supportive of his shitting himself endeavors, but she didn't really do much else this episode other than just be there for the ride. not complaining tho as we got to see more runt which is always good

other stuff i wanna talk about. ripley is always cool, i love any and all ripley content and am super stoked to see what her character will do throughout this series. if she dies i will cry, and she wont guys, mark my words. also, just to make sure i'm right, were going to the prison to find may to teach us steamsledding to become a team called smokestack to beat the other teams to win the finals to go in the winners lounge to go to clocktopolis so we can find the inventor???? i am so lost and i think this is it, right??? idfk man i give up its two am and i've been writing for an hour at this point

not related to the episode at all: i feel like graphite and uncle three strings would get along fucking great and i've seen like nobody talk about either of them so can we please as a collective give both of them the love they deserve. doppler and pinch are also super cool, i love their designs. im excited to get to the inventor, the next couple episodes will be fun for sure

Im literally on the last episode of OUAW and I've been putting off watching it for literal weeks. I think I'm scared to finish it, which is funny because I'm really excited to start their other stuff. But I've grown so attached to it and I don't want it to end even though I know they'll come back in a couple months. Like, I was planning on watching all of EoM before Halloween, but I refuse to start it until I finish OUAW, and I just can't bring myself to finish it.

Theres a lot to all this that I don't really need to get into, but I need to finish OUAW soon or else I fear I might lose the LoA hyperfixation, and that would be devastating.

I think it's time to finish OUAW because my music taste has shifted for EoM (in vibes and whatnot) and I need my music aligned with the campaigns.

What are your thoughts on Imogen and Sahar? I am actually really happy with the whole thing (even if my soft romantic heart is still kind of hoping they end up together haha, I am full of contradictions okay?)

And Tori and Micheal? I literally cried every time they appeared on screen I love them SO much, I was just a little disappointed Tori did´t get to say she’s asexual like she does in the comic… hoping it will be there if there’s a fourth season

And Isaac? My baby was going through it this season, that whole journey was so beautiful and refreshing imo

ALSO Darcy this season!!!! Aaahh I love them so much, as a lesbian who’s only recently started to question my own gender seeing them discover themself like that was so so lovely

I also really loved how Charlie’s relationship to his parents was showed, I thought it was done really well! And Nick starting to realise he needs to figure out who he is without his boyfriend 🥺

i fell to my knees every time michael holden appeared on screen. his appearance at the nye party GAGGED. ON THE FLOOR. they were so insane for that it was GORGEOUS.

i was genuinely so confused when tori didn't correct charlie on calling them a straight couple. i think i shouted at the screen for them to stay on the wheel because they weren't done LMAO... BUT BUT it totally means a more fleshed out sprolden sexuality arc which i am HYPED about. their relationship is so important to me im so excited for that representation to be more blatant.

everything with isaac happened so fast i got WHIPLASH him coming out to everyone at the zoo i was sobbing that representation is so important to me and just so so nice to see..... argrhfhf. though i almost just blanked out the whole tao isaac thing omg WHAT HAPPENED TO JAMES THEN??? INSANE. that was insane. glad they got past that one quickly god

no because mullet darcy HELLO kizzy looked amazing... non-binary lesbian representation ALSO huge like. GOD THIS SEASON WAS HUGE

no because episode 4 was DEVASTATING. but it was one of my fave episode of television i've ever watched. nick at the halloween party like. oh my god i feel like i still haven't digested it all yet.... charlie's talk with his parents too since they cut away in the comic me and my friend were SCREAMING through tears to cut away like my GOD. but joe did it beautifully and u could tell he really cared :,]

i also yapped incredibly hard. i could really do this for hours, honestly... i'm just so so excited fr. the way the cast was like this season is HOT its STEAMY its SEXY even though. like i've been a comic reader since about 2019. guys i fucken know we gotta get through volume 4 first SIT DOWWWNNN

so funny honestly imagine going into s3 with just THAT info then being hit with the emotional devastation which was eps 1-5. 6-8 were lit though

I just spent the last week bingeing the OG X-Men animated series to be able to watch the new one

Spoiler for heartstopper season 3

Here are my thoughts

Over all I loved the season. It’s been such a fun watch (I say after being emotionally devastated after this season). And I can’t wait to see more!

1. Im glad that they didn’t have Imogen and Sahar be together. I like that they show that it’s normal and ok to want to be friends with someone instead of dating them.

2. Isaac, my beloved, I related to him in so many ways. I love that we got to see more of him.

3. Michael is absolutely adorable. 10/10 my compliments to the chef.

4. I really wish they waited a bit more to be able to get Olivia Colman in. The season felt off without Sarah Nelson. Especially since in the comics she plays such a large role here. (Also I just love Olivia Colman)

5. I related to Charlie in this season, even though I wish I didn’t. I will say some things I found were better done in the comics, but still it was well done and Joe did a really good job.

6. Kit pulled at my heartstrings so much. His break down scene with Tao broke me to bits. Also kit is hands down one of the best actors of his age.

7. I wish we got the scene where nick stays over at Charlie’s place. The scene where Charlie says “today was shit” it just felt like it was missing. Idk, maybe I like it when characters suffer.

8. I wish the episodes were a bit longer to give us time to breathe.

9. Like the previous season, there were times when the dialogue was a bit clunky but it wasn’t as distracting as season 2.

10. My favourite season is still season one but season three comes in at a close second.

11. Tao and elle figuring things out was really nice after everything last season.

12. Im low key sad we didn’t get to see Charlie’s outfit for the summer fête from the comics. That outfit was iconic and I feel like the show version wasn’t quite goth/edgy enough.

i started watching btvs because of u. am on episode 1, when does this get good /gen

ok ok lemme give u some vibes for the seasons

season 1: camp camp camp this is the filler vibes lets learn these characters season, they have no budget, and were playing in the goosebumps silly space, the finale is the Best episode of the season

season 2: oh no romance is in the air and what is that? the emotional consequences of our actions? oh god noooo. this season is often people faves and the middle to second half is emotionally devastating. (still beware it has some of the lowest rated episodes) a season of finally some vamps with CHARACTER (if ur interested in spike and buffy then this is when we meet spike as the season antagonisttt)

season 3: the homoerotic subtext is in the AIR and buffy is not ok. this is the last highschool season and it has one of my all time fave fictional characters so i cannot have an unbiased opinion on most of this season (even tho it has the worst romance of the show by far in it) (if ur interested in faith and buffy tHIS is when we meeettt herrrr and god its messsyyy)

season 4: ok listen this is the lowest rated season of the show, but im so in love with it. the vibes are iNSANE, everyons trying to find their way after highschool and its clunky and have such weird polarizing eps but also one of the best episodes of television ive ever seen. also spike is back but this time hes their domesticated pet they have chained up in the bathroom

season 5: if u wanna know when things really pick up and get bonkers crazy its here. widely known as the best seaosn of the show and one of the best finales of all time and god i think its deserves that title. the story pacing is wild, spike is sure something this season, heartbreak, triumph, confusion, clever storytelling, this seasons so well done and u can watch buffys intense struggle into being an adult women

season 6: the most polarizing season. we explore buffys intense depression in the face of her own debilitating trauma and how it affects her ability to caretake for her family as well at take care of herself this season and its personally my favorite season of the whole show. spike and buffy are fucking insane this season, they are fucking a literal house down this season

season 7: final season of the show and it feels like it. the vibes are very oh boy howdy this is it huh. i think they make mostly good decisions this season that send me off to some amazing post series fanfictions so ultimately im happy

ok i got pretty high halfway thru that so if it makes no sense that would be why. but if ur interested in me making an essential episode list to help guide u thru earlier more filler seasons to get to the meat and bones just send an ask my way again 👍👍 id say give it to halfway season 2 and see how u feel
