pause. zoom. enhance. good universe smallidarity being the one where joel isnt homophobic. i need to know more about your bad universe smallidarity joel <3
LMAO well "bad universe smallidarity" is how I interpret smallidarity personally. I know my following has been curated a lot by this point but I still get anxious to comment on it out in the open, so I'm just gonna: This is about characters. It's about characters. Hello I'm talking about characters and this says absolutely nothing about any relationships present in the real world and I wouldn't have it any other way than it is now. This is about characters and I am a big fucking fan of Jizzie, don't even doubt me (said in general, not to you lol)
Anyway. I made a long post about this before but it's a little bit cringe so I'm gonna try to sum my thoughts up again: I love analysing Joel's freak behavior and to me his character reads as homophobic but in a deeply closeted way. His relationship with Lizzie is extremely cute but I get more aroace vibes from it than anything honestly. Their characters would have gotten together because, it made sense to. "Hey we like each other, might as well get married" and good for them, but although they are cute and every now and then proclaim their love, it feels more like an obligatory sentiment to make to me, their characters within the Life series and other SMPs I've watched with them just don't strike me as a couple if you take away the specific terms they use that confirm it. Like honest to god someone can try and make a compilation of that and I'm willing to bet that the compilation of him and Jimmy being weird would be at least comparable in length. And frankly I don't think Lizzie gives much of a fuck anyway
Joel's treated Jimmy very undesirably in the past, main culprit being ESMP2, until out of nowhere he chooses to end their rivalry and proclaim them two best friends instead, which Jimmy very easily goes along with. This very sudden change in their relationship being enforced by Joel makes me think he came to some revelation and had a good think about it. That's a lie, he's bad at that, he probably had a meltdown instead and didn't know how to fix things other than to go tell Jimmy "hey lets be friends now and um impose new law". This is where he contributed to the Jimmy ecosystem (AKA the harmful environment and people that enforce the idea that Jimmy is inherently lesser than them) the most and then abruptly stopped. Instances of him belittling Jimmy one way or another still happen afterward but it really has changed and become both more lenient and less frequent. What has been a constant however is the weirdass homoerotic behavior
This since and before ESMP2, but it really gives vibes of someone in love but neglecting to acknowledge it and/or combating those feelings with vocal disapproval of any intimacy that could be inferred. He has a wife after all, in fact, he'll remind you every chance he gets. Joel has no problem indulging in and joking about more sexual approaches vs more affectionate ones. Eg, the neck kisses, calling Jimmy babe, having pillow talk with Tango and literally making a baby with both Jimmy and Sausage in ESMP. But anything affectionate makes him feel vulnerable and so that's a no-no. I have no good explicit examples for this other than the fact that he just doesn't engage in affectionate engages/jokes much (not even with Lizzie) and him refusing to hold Jimmy's hand in SL. It's all jokes, and if it does get too sus, no worries, he can always just proclaim "I have a wife!!" as a no-homo safety net. But methinks he's just in denial. Unfortunately when he starts to grapple with his feelings I think he becomes homophobic and has probably called himself every slur out there. It'd make sense to me given how he often acts around Jimmy. It's not that he has anything against the concept of gay, he just doesn't know how to handle himself being gay
But, along with him trying to step out of the ecosystem and instead wanting to support Jimmy, he's also become more open to intimacy? For lack of a better word. He's been much less outward about his interactions with Jimmy being jokes, eg the RL and WL kisses where they're both just fucking soft about it man and just carry on, or him declaring himself to just be flirting with Jimmy to Gem and Scar in WL with no caveat. Still, Joel absolutely can't express genuine love or care in any conventional manner to Jimmy which hmm. Why might that be... WL puts Joel's worry for Jimmy to the forefront where he is VERY vocally upset about almost each of Jimmy's deaths but can't express this to him any other way than to call him a loser. Other people might hear of his worry (eg Gem) or he'll defend Jimmy to them (disapproving of the premature grave people built for him in SL. This in general is really important in signifying his departure from the ecosystem by disapproving of others within it). He is very nice to Jimmy, like in WL (especially considering Jimmy's several attempts at killing him for no real reason) but only outside of vocal confirmation
This is why in the smallidarity compilation I included clips like him in Phasmo just saying he was worried about Jimmy TO Jimmy because this fucker never says that so this is substantial material for me. It's character development, maybe he's slowly exiting the closet and coming to terms with his feelings and that he can be "vulnerable". Anyway that's why I label him homophobic but the point is that he really does care Jimmy a lot and he's been much better to him and by virtue less homophobic towards himself

Okay I wanted to make this poll before the WL finale but then I realized it would come out soon so I might as well wait
Some extra context I couldn’t fit cuz character limit:
LL: one minecart blew up but he panicked so much he just looked up at the sky instead of moving before the next one blew up. Oh also this was in front of a bunch of people.
LimL: Scar specifically DID NOT WANT TANGO TO DIE. He was running so that he wouldn’t have to kill Tango. And Tango died chasing after him.
SL: Scar and Tango were burning the earth together. Tango knew Scar would kill him but went anyways. He had his back turned while Scar broke the moss under him
WL: he placed a creeper egg and lit it with flint and steel to try to drop it on people. It blew up in his face. He tried it AGAIN. It blew up in his face AGAIN, dropping him to half a heart. Joel, who saw NONE of that and assumed Tango was on good health, shot him and killed him instantly. I also believe Tango was still beep booping from the trivia bot but I can’t be certain.

anyway stuff i really liked about the WL finale and WL as a whole, because I genuinely don't think I'll ever talk about it again in a fandom-y way:
(spoilers, obvs)
whatever the fuck ren was doing. i. i still don't know what treebarks deal is, I feel like god intended me to be a martyn guy and something got fucked up along the way and now I'm really scared of him in an animalistic sense. i feel like in another life i would've had a lot to say like a lot alot to say oh my god.
whatever the fuck scott was doing. so many moments from this episode that gave me the "neuron activated!" reaction image response with him and pearl. majormoon kiss didn't happen but like that would've been somehow less intimate than whatever this is. the murder camel sequence especially (where they hunted down GEM?) gave me that same feeling as when I watch smth like utena and spot visual parallels. this is insane but i can't find the screenshots like that one scene from utena where she's standing in the doorway kanae did in an earlier scene to signify that she acts as her replacement it's like that.
speaking of scott i do think he underwent a bit of character development and that makes me happy. he's absolutely still like. insane but i appreciate him making an effort to be nice to Pearl. the bar is on the floor. i love that one of the first things he says is "oh my god I can't believe we stuck together even though EVERYONE (grits teeth) thought we were gonna betray eachother <3 <3" the copium is so
pearl. oh pearl. it really does feel like pearl out of the entire cast got her "plans" most sidetracked but she still got in some good hits near the end. her reaction to gems death oh my god. her calling murder camel in SL a "fond memory". it feels like her character really never achieves any closure at all and that's the one thing that i think is REALLY awesome genuinely. so many of the deaths had me squinting at my screen going "that's it????" but it feels fitting for her, especially in this season.
JOEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! joel not only got the win he deserved but he also got revenge on scott which is amazing and incredible. i wish it happened in a season i was more on board with but for what it is it is really awesome to see. his pop off pvp battle at the end is the highlight of the episode for me, big last life flashbacks.
team BET/tuff guys were the one team i enjoyed from start to end, there's something magical to me about the way they NEED to involve eachother in everything and make bits around eachother specifically like idk you can really tell these three enjoyed themselves and that's all i really want at the end of the day (and i feel like that really saved them from what a lot of the other teams fell into with not really interacting). the fact that they all died next to eachother placement-wise and tango finally got his revenge on bdubs COMPLETELY ON ACCIDENT is amazing. tango in general has been a massive stand out to me this season with his antics, I'm so not kidding when I say extended exposure to redstone does something to these guys. really amazing 10/10 team, welcome back BEST etc etc i can't wait to watch more of them on hermitcraft.

The most kills each player has gotten on another person in the life series (excluding real life smp)
Someone has probably already made this before but I've never seen it so I made this mainly for my own convenience but I'm posting it here anyway. Some of these kills are technicalities (and others were also excluded bc of technicalities) so some numbers on this list are debatable but I tried to make it as accurate as possible
Scott: Joel - 7 (Ngl I laughed. The entire reason I made this list was for this statistic I wish more people acknowledged how comically violent scott's retaliations are against Joel's antics sometimes. Literal tom and jerry moment)
Joel: Cleo - 6 (really surprising actually. I've watched all of Joel's povs like twice and have never realized how often he killed Cleo)
Grian: Scar - 5 Jimmy - 6? (one kill is questionable due to it being the warden kill in SL so if anyone should be credited its Etho, which is why I'm still including Scar on this list)
Scar: Etho - 5
Etho: Scar - 5 (worlds healthiest father son duo)
Martyn: Tango - 4 (this number + how much their characters clash make me think these 2 would have an incredible alliance. and by incredible I mean it would crash and burn and I would love every second of it)
Pearl: Cleo - 4
Impulse: Pearl - 3
Ren: Cleo - 3
Bdubs: Impulse, Grian, Skizz - 2
Gem: Scott & Pearl - 2 (Technically also Etho if including LimL)
Skizz: Bdubs - 2
Bigb: Scott - 2
Jimmy: Lizzie - 2 (you could probably make some kind of canary narrative out of this but I'm kind of a vocal hater of the 'the curse got passed on to lizzie' concept so I'm not gonna be the one to do it)
Cleo: Scott - 2 (both of which were on request of Scott)
Mumbo: Joel, Bdubs, Impulse (Scott and Scar could also be included) - 1
Tango: Joel, Jimmy, Etho, Martyn, Bdubs - 1
Lizzie: Pearl, Jimmy, Bigb - 1
#trafficblr#scott smajor#smallishbeans#grian#ethoslab#gtws#only including the first 5 names on this list for my own sanity#life series#traffic SMP#also I will never get over how funny real life is as a name for this smp#ooc it sounds so bad

as a bdubs fan, what are your thoughts on his team kill in last life/how that affected his relationships going into later seasons? 🎤
i think the reason a lot of people struggle with this is that many of us (myself included!) are still deeply into the idea of the characters being wholly separate from their creators, but you can't really talk about bdubs' killing of tango without acknowledging bdubs the man's love of doing whatever will tell the best story. it's why he doesn't kill etho as the boogeyman, and it's why he kills tango and lizzie when he does- those decisions are conscious choices as a narrator that he knows will make more drama and incentivize people to react in more interesting ways. this carries onto other controversial decisions of his, like "betraying" impulse at the end of 3rd life, and his behaviour in double life.
a lot of smarter people than me have made commentaries on how this sort of decision-making would relate to c!bdubs and i'm not going to attempt to try and get on their level but it's something that i feel the need to mention, because otherwise bdubs' decisions (particularly in last life) are often confusing and unstrategic to those who don't watch him. because yes, obviously, looking at him as purely a character with no awareness of what's going on outwith the story of a closed death game is going to make him look callous and uncaring. if you strip away all of the overarching narratives that lead to his decisions- for example, impulse being disloyal and betraying others all throughout 3rd life only to get his comeuppance at the end, or much of tango's story throughout the whole series being tied to him being dehumanised, objectified, and treated unfairly- then they do appear cruel and unwarranted. but at the same time, looking at bdubs' character purely as a narrative force with the omniscient ability to further other storylines doesn't lend to a lot of interpretations (even if this was done very literally in limited life by not having individual episodes and spending much of his time doing "boring" tasks to assist his team).
something particularly interesting about bdubs is how his behaviours aren't really called out except by those who perceived him as having wronged them (impulse and tango), as opposed to say, bigb and pearl, who despite only having "wronged" a select few people have worse reputations across the server. i don't know enough about bigb or pearl to hazard a guess at why this is but it could be due to the people they've crossed having more respect or influence- i can't speak for impulse but tango in particular is not taken very seriously, so the last life kill within the series is almost a joke, not a genuine threat. couple this with, for example, pearl having won and placed highly in dl/sl respectively, while bdubs' pvp is often not fantastic (though again this could be a choice on his part- see the liml skizz fight) and it can be easier to see why she could be perceived as a threat while bdubs is not.
so how does it affect his teams going forward? well, from last life onwards, one could say that the only people bdubs has teamed with are those who either a) have good reason to trust him regardless due to prior experience (cleo, etho) or b) those who have little other choice due to being perceived similarly as untrustworthy (scar, pearl). one could also say that it hasn't actually affected his teamups that much because bdubs was already dismissed as a liability from the get go (see: widow's alliance in 3rd life) and so, coupled with tango's habit of making bad decisions and being dehumanised, his kill in last life was seen less as his fault and more tango's fault for making the foolish decision of continuing to stay in the alliance. so bdubs' reputation remains as poor as it was initially and doesn't take the hit that bigb or pearl's did! it's a similar situation to scar or jimmy, but with the difference that bdubs is seen as just that bit more capable, along with the fact that rather than being an inevitable danger to himself (though he is fully capable of that) he's an inevitable danger to others, whether he wants to be or not.
this is all a bit of a nothingburger ramble not least because most of his alliances repeat (the only standout one being the mounders in secret life which has been wiped from my memory entirely) but i hope it at least makes sense.

Team ups I'd like to see in the next life series:
Joel & Tango (based on the start of 3rd life they seem like a fun dynamic, but since it's Tango there will probably be at least 1 more person in the team)
Lizzie & Etho (funny pair, "lead the way" "to your base?" moment is stuck in my head)
Lizzie & Mumbo (They're both my POVs and I am crazy about them, I genuinely almost stopped breathin when they rode the camel around in sl)
Jimmy & Skizz (I don't really watch both of them but they seem nice)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Red. Red was all he could see.
“Mamá…? Papá…?”
A young Miguel, only eighteen, had just finished work for some extended family in another town. He was delighted to be back home.
“Mamá, Papá?!”
He runs through the house, stopping suddenly at the sight before him.
In front of his eyes, the bodies of his parents lay lifeless on the parlor floor. The stench of iron flooded his nose, and his stomach churned. He looked around. Except for a tossed chair, nothing seemed to be out of place.
-------------------------
Miguel stuck the shovel into the cold dirt, makeshift headstones staring back at him. Reciting a quiet prayer, he turns to make his way back into the house.
He had walked throughout the house, looking for anything of value that might be missing.
Nothing.
Money that was kept in his father’s nightstand and safe was untouched. His mother’s jewelry was still organized in her cedar jewelry box; an anniversary gift from his father.
When he opened her jewelry box, he took her beaded rosary and a copper ring. He smiled sadly at the copper ring. Shoving them into his vest pocket along with some money, he made his way to the parlor.
Whoever had done this was going to pay. Whoever had done this would meet the wrath of Miguel O’Hara.
Miguel snatched his father’s trusty pistol from its spot on the mantlepiece. As he made his way to the front door, he slipped on his cowboy hat and set off for the town.
-------------------------
He first made his way to the saloon, its bright and cheery atmosphere a stark contrast from himself. He quietly made his way to the bar, ordering a whiskey.
He needed to come up with some sort of plan. He couldn’t just go around asking people if they’d seen any suspicious folk. He didn’t even know who he was looking for.
His thoughts were cut short by the sound of loud, boisterous laughter. Moving his head to the side, he noticed two seemingly drunk men four seats down from him. He shook his head, annoyed.
“...Yea, that bitch squealed like a damn pig, I tell ya! Had it comin’ too.”
Miguel’s attention was piqued.
“Don’t ya…don’t ya think killin’ ‘er was a bit much, though, Butch?” his friend asked.
The man named Butch scowled at his friend. “Hell nah! She made a damn fool ‘outta me when she turned me down at the market. I’m fuckin’,” he hiccups, “Fuckin’ Butch Wyatt. And no one makes a fool ‘outta me!”
Butch slams his glass down. “Planned on jus’ killin’ ‘er and leavin’ the body for ‘er husband to see. But that Bottom-Feeder came home early. Had to kill ‘im too.”
His friend tries to calm Butch down, not wanting to cause a bigger scene. But Miguel had heard. Oh, he heard well. He had to set his now empty glass down so as to not shatter it with his hand.
He watched as they made their way out of the saloon, swaying drunkenly out the doors. They wouldn’t make it far.
After a couple of minutes, he stood from his seat, placing some coins down by his glass. Nobody seemed to notice as he made his exit.
The street was silent save for the drunken laughter of the two men and Miguel’s heavy footfalls following behind them.
He watches as they turn into an alleyway, and speeds up his pace. His blood starts to pump faster as he closes in on the two. He slips the gun from its holster and calls out to them.
“Hey, Bastardos.”
They turn around, their eyes slowly trailing up to his own.
“Whatdya jus’ call me…?” Butch blurts out, reaching for his gun.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Senor,” Miguel answers, his dead eyes trained on Butch. Butch’s friend tugs his arm, a look of dread on his face. “C’mon, now Butch, you don’t know who he is?” he asks.
Butch looks over to his friend. “Am I supposed to know who he is, Casey?”. Casey leans in. “That’s Miguel O’Hara, I’ve seen ‘im doin’ work around town…”.
Butch lets out a laugh. “O’Hara?! Yer’ the bitch’s son?! What? Come ‘ere to seek revenge, boy? It’s two against one, ya know.”
Miguel doesn’t respond.
“Yer’ mother was a fuckin’ whore. When I pointed that gun at ‘er, boy was she-”
“Squealin’ like a pig. Yea, I got that.”
The sound of a gunshot rings throughout the alley, Butch’s body slumping to the ground. And before he knows it, he aims at Casey and shoots.
-------------------------
The sun had risen just above the hills, and roosters crowed from their perches.
The Mayor’s wife was taking her usual morning walk with her mutt, Captain, humming happily to herself. She always awoke before the town to get a peaceful walk in.
She sees something hanging from the square’s stone statue (the statue being her husband of course). The sun blinds her vision of the statue as she squints to get a better look.
She walks closer, bringing her hand to her forehead to shield her eyes from the sun.
And then.
“AAAAAAAH!”
Her shrill scream alerts the homes nearby. She drops Captain’s leash as she covers her mouth, sobs racking her body.
Joshua, the storekeeper’s son is the first to stand by the wife’s side. When he looks at the statue, he retches.
As more and more townsfolk gather in the square all hell breaks loose. Shouts of fear and surprise fill the air but are soon quieted down as the Mayor makes his way through the crowd.
Looking up, he gasps, horrified.
There, hanging from the Statue’s arm were the mangled corpses of Butch Wyatt and Casey Brown.
And as Miguel stands at the top of a hill overlooking the town, mounted on a stolen horse, he can’t help but smirk as one of the residents shouts, “El ángel vengador!”
From that day forward, Miguel O'Hara would venture from town to town seeking retribution on other outlaws. Word spread fast of an Avenging Angel making its way throughout the West.
Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the people of Miguel’s hometown to figure out just who this Avenging Angel was. Word of El ángel vengador’s identity spread even faster and soon wanted posters of Miguel O’Hara were posted on every surface throughout every town.
Some argued that El ángel vengador was helping towns that were being terrorized by outlaws while others argued that vigilantes had no place to go around killing people.
As the years passed, Miguel made a realization that killing outlaws wouldn’t bring his parents back and would only make the reward for his head higher.
-------------------------
As he sat on the small bed in Y/N’s guest room, fiddling with his mother’s rosary, he thought to himself.
It had been a decade since the end of his murders, and five years more since the death of his parents. Even after all these years, he is still considered a wanted man, although the hunt for him has simmered drastically.
He couldn’t help as a tear escaped his eye, bringing the rosary up to his lips.
Tomorrow would mark the anniversary of his parents' deaths.
______________________________________________________________
This was a dark segment! A huge contrast from the previous chapter, I know. There might be some confusion, so here’s some clarification on age:
Miguel is around 33 when he meets Y/N. His parents were murdered 15 years ago, but he quit his murders 10 years ago.
Y/N is around 26. Her ex-husband cheated on her when they were both 21.
very interesting to me that the seasons in which skizz was the most violent and the most successful as a killer were the two seasons in which he was a follower, not a leader
SHIT i was writing a lot about this in the tags but I had too many so ill write it here. disclaimer it’s not v succinct it’s just a lot of thoughts haha
FASCINATING to me. Like, I don’t think he’s a bad leader. I think he’s charismatic and confident and he always has the group’s best interests in heart and mind so he can (usually. see last life) support his friends and work with them as a unit. But as a leader he has to watch himself and not make any reckless decisions. Everyone is depending on him.
But in 3rd life where he follows Ren as a leader and in wild life where they didn’t really have a leader (if you say they did it would be Grian) he didn’t have that pressure on him. His job was to stay alive and follow orders, serving his team however he can. He still supports them, but in these situations where they don’t rely on him he has more freedom to show his devotion, and in a death game? The best way to help your team is through killing for them. He also worries about his life less because it’s less integral to the team’s survival.
There’s also specifics on the reasons why he couldn’t kill in the seasons where he was a leader:
The thing with last life is that when he turned red he (as all reds did) had to leave. He was forcibly separated from his team. He couldn’t lead them anymore and there wasn’t really any way he could support them, especially with the mental disconnect of very suddenly being alone or with someone who was an enemy just yesterday. It doesn’t compute for someone as loyal as him. I don’t think there was a way in which he could just get over that and kill, especially since his priority still lay with protecting them and he continued wanting to lead them (see the BEST hair AUGHHHH).
Skipping to secret life - his team was vulnerable when they turned red. They were well aware they were one of the weakest teams combat-wise and Tango could’ve died from a gust of wind. BigB was better off but he wasn’t much of a fighter either. I think Skizz, as the leader, saw he needed to protect his boys and keep them together. He couldn’t be reckless otherwise they’d die too. He just needed to help them survive.
Limited life is a very interesting season in this because I’d argue Skizz puts himself into a leader role more here than anywhere else and it’s also the season in which he has the most struggle with killing and he knows it.
His team are competent and they’re trying to eliminate their opposition and he wasn’t able to help much at all. It could be that BECAUSE his team is doing so well he’s focusing just on leading them but it really can’t be because he’s very obviously upset he’s not helping. If it is that it’d be more subconscious and would play into his vulnerability and inferiority complex I’d argue he has in liml, but that’s a different post lmao. So a very simplified version of it - he’s has an overall very bad time in liml and the only thing he gets right are his leadership and charisma (+ his duel with Bdubs iirc haha) so that psychological effect that that’s the only thing going well for him kinda continues and becomes realer.
In liml it’s less like his role as leader invites his poor combat performance and decreased penchant for violence like SL (and to an extent LL - I don’t think he’d be much better off if he were a follower - the ‘reds must leave’ situation was just overall bad for him haha), but the other way round - his misfortune and everything going wrong for him encourages him to take up the leader role.
#anyways endlessly fascinating to me#also writing this made me realise i need to watch his liml again because it’s such an interesting season for him#he has so much going on actually#SKIZZLEMANNNNN#thinking about him in the life series literally forever. im all about all of his seasons#skizzposting#types types#do i maintag this? ah well might as well#skizzleman
