You know what would be nice?

Mahiru stared at his best friend, Sakuya, as he begged for Mahiru’s forgiveness. He just had to break the window after Mahiru cleaned it, didn’t he?

Some peace and quiet would be nice. And maybe less window breaking, if that’s possible.

“You know it’s not me you should apologize to,” he says disapprovingly. “The principal will give you hell for breaking another window.”

“You’re scarier,” Sakuya says simply. Mahiru hates how much he likes that answer. ‘Saying what I want to hear won’t help you right now’ he want to say, but then Sakuya might think Mahiru will let this go. When he’s obviously not going to.

Sakuya. Broke. A. Window.  

Again.

Sakuya’s grinning, but it’s that kind of nervous grin that he does when he knows he’s in trouble, and Mahiru wants to smile. He knows him too well. “I’m disowning you,” he declares instead, shoving Sakuya towards the door. “You’re going to tidy up, obviously. I cleaned this goddamn window.”

“But I hate cleaning,” Sakuya whines, holding onto Mahiru’s sleeve. “C’mon, MahiMahi, you can help your old friend out!”

Mahiru fights the urge to kick him.

“I think,” Mahiru starts blankly, “that my “old friend” should start moving his ass before I smack him.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be nice?” Sakuya pouts, letting go of Mahiru’s sleeve. Mahiru doesn’t mind. (He does). “I’m nice to everyone but you,” Mahiru retorts, crossing his arms. Sakuya smiles at that. “It’s good to know that I’m special,” he muses, linking his arm with Mahiru’s arm, ignoring Mahiru’s glare.

If Mahiru didn’t like him so much, he would’ve kicked him by now. Moments like these really make Mahiru irritated, because Sakuya really seems to not care for all of the trouble he gets into.

Mahiru should definitely kick him.

“You stand out in the worst ways,” Mahiru agrees, and gets a playful jab at his stomach in return.

…It’s just that seeing Sakuya’s happy grin and happy-go-lucky attitude (while doing something stupid and highly illogical) makes Mahiru annoyingly softer.

Sakuya notices Mahiru’s fond smile. Sakuya teases Mahiru for being weak.

Mahiru finds that he doesn’t mind. He kicks him, for real this time.

Sakuya laughs. Mahiru laughs too.

Despite it all, Mahiru is very, very soft for his best friend.

Mahiru holds a picture in his hand. It’s a picture of him, Sakuya, Ryusei and Koyuki–all smiling and happy, wearing ridiculous costumes with a colorful festival in the background. Sakuya’s arm is resting on Mahiru’s shoulder, and Mahiru is grinning at the camera like he won the lottery, without a care in the world.

He remembers when they took that picture.

He can’t seem to forget.

“Hey, Kuro,” he murmurs, eyes not leaving the picture. The cat’s ears perk up. “I’m trying to sleep,” Kuro says, not bothering to open his eyes. Mahiru didn’t expect any other answer. He pets Kuro and takes a deep breath.

“Did you ever love someone?” he asks. Kuro turns to look at him, wary. “Did you?” he asks back, unblinking.

“I… I think I did,” Mahiru replies, uncertain. Kuro nuzzles closer to Mahiru’s leg. “You think? Shouldn’t you know these kinds of things?” Kuro mutters. “How can you tell?” Mahiru asks, unsure. Unsure of why he’s asking Kuro, of all people. Unsure of why his heart aches so much when he sees Sakuya’s arm on his shoulder. Unsure of his feelings, and of himself.

“It should be obvious,” Kuro says and stretches. “Compare the way you love that person to the way you love your friends. There’s a difference, because they’re special.”

Mahiru takes the advice to heart. “You’re talking like you know,” he says to Kuro. “you’re talking like you fell in love.”

“Humans are annoying, but beautiful,” Kuro mumbles, sheepish. “You can’t help it when you watch them for as long as I did.”

Mahiru could think of a person that fits the description perfectly.

“I love Sakuya,” he states. It’s the easiest thing he’s ever said. Who knew that love was this simple?

“I love Sakuya,” he repeats. It sounds good when he says it. It’s like he’s meant to say it. Like he should’ve said it, long ago.

“I know,” Kuro tells him. “I could see it on your face.”

You did?

“He never waited for you,” Kuro continues. “So you ran after him.”

Mahiru realizes.

“He waited plenty,” he whispers. “I was the one who was running away.”

“Stop nagging,” Mahiru grumbles, pushing Sakuya away with his foot. “I’m trying to read.”

“But I need oxygen,” Sakuya declares. Mahiru raises an eyebrow. “You’re the air I breathe,” he completes, smiling cheesily. Mahiru snorts. “You tried,” he dismisses, going back to his book.

“Watanuki Sakuya, you are a sap,” Mahiru says excitedly, rushing to hug him.

Cake.

Flowers.

Balloons.

“I’m not a needy girlfriend, just your simple best friend,” he says teasingly. “What’s all of this? It’s just my birthday.”

“I wanted to do something special for my best friend’s birthday. Sue me.”

“Are you blushing?” Mahiru asks, grinning. He was most definitely blushing.

Mahiru is elated.

“Stop giving me that face,” Sakuya grunts. His face is reddening. “You would’ve done the same for me.”

“No I wouldn’t,” Mahiru laughs.

It’s the best birthday he ever had.

Mahiru loves Sakuya, and it’s his favorite feeling in the entire world. He doesn’t have broken windows and cheesy pickup lines anymore. He doesn’t have cake and flowers and balloons. He has a memory, and he has determination.

Mahiru doesn’t have anything left of that Sakuya now, but he loves him. He misses him.

So he remembers. And he promises to never forget.

“It’s not good enough,” Kuro tells him. “Don’t just remember.”

So mahiru promises to not let go.

Little does he know that on a faraway rooftop, Sakuya is doing the exact same.

When did your Blog Reach it’s Peak: i’m not relatable(tm) so i don’t think i ever had a peak, but  i managed to break 1000 notes on some of my art once in every fandom i’ve been :D (once in homestuck, once in steven universe and once in overwatch!)

Thans, I was more of a XXXHolic person and that anime got me thru some rough times. I quit the manga maybe 60% thru because I learned about the ending and was disappointed. Before I go off on a tangent, can you please explain to my clueless self exactly HOW TRC and XXX intersect. the xxxholic anime removed ALL refs to TRC so Im hella confused

tbh i havent watched or read through all of xxxholic (i only read through about 4 ot 5 volumes) but from tsubasa’s standpoint, syaoran, fai, and kurogane go to yuuko for their traveling needs (in kuros case he was forcibly sent there but all the same) and yuuko gave them the white mokona while she and watanuki kept the black one. thats how they stayed in touch c:
