What I Read in July 2024
Tumblr media
I really wanted to like this one but it was actually boring and just...lacked any substance or the charm of slice-of-life
Tumblr media
Soji and Sei are all but on the same page feelings wise without ever fully talking about it. It's kinda cute.
Tumblr media
Enjoyed this immensely. I like where Drizzt is a calm collected caring person but also totally bonkers when offered a really good fight/challange
Tumblr media
Another good one. I really like Aldrige's fae creatures.
Tumblr media
The crow one was my favorite but I liked all the stories.
Tumblr media
Poor Marco
Tumblr media
a fun little adventure. I do wish we had lunchbox and dinner pail trees
Tumblr media
This was so much fun!
Tumblr media
one of my favorite manga series (reread of volume 1)
Tumblr media
very cute (reread of volume 1)

The Near Future chapter in Live A Live has an optional set of scenes that give a bunch of mostly useless items, which was censored for the remake. Originally it was Akira trying to get Watanabe to steal Taeko's panties for him but the remake changed it to Taeko's secret savings instead. Watanabe also originally gives his own boxers first but it was changed to his pocket lint instead. The second-to-last scene is the only one that gives something useful, Taeko catches them and then slaps Akira, which for whatever reason gives him a fairly powerful weapon.
Tumblr media
It's 4 times as powerful as the only other weapon Akira can get in this chapter.
>Originally it was Akira trying to get Watanabe to steal Taeko's panties for him but the remake changed it to Taeko's secret savings instead.
Ahh Japan, never change
We've gotta seem like total puritans to them with all this stuff.

I love shoujo manga. It's really written with a girls heart in mind.
One of the main reasons Sei stays back after avenging her family's murder is her love for Okita sensei. Does it seem childish? Does it seem like something a young girl who doesn't know consequences would do? The kind of questions that pop into one's mind when it comes to motives of young girls that isn't about "goals".
Tumblr media
Say this was a shonen manga, nobody would question a boys' motive of joining the shinsengumi, all he needs to show is loyalty to their teacher, someone they are dedicated to follow and get better with sheer will power and gumption.
Thing is sei shows all that, she lost her family, is an orphan, and comes with a strong resolve of even shaving her head to play the part of a guy to join the mibu roshi. She puts her femininity on the line for a cause. Her admiration and love for Okita sensei isn't different because she's in love with him. It doesn't make her any less "noble". I like the early volumes show sei growing and understanding her way around the mibu roshi while in love with okita, if anything it makes her resolve strong and to understand why she wants to serve under him.
Ofcourse later the narrative is brought along the lines of how is this any different from Okita's dedication to Kondo san.
I just always feel how girls agency to fall in love is questioned as something immature of a goal to start with. Is it immature? We don't ask the same question to a boy, where we accept they are still too young and will come to experience things slowly but surely.
Sei's love for Okita is enough of a determination to stay after avenging her family. I like manga established that fact early on. For her it's go back to being a girl and get married. Finding a purpose in life can be something that revolves around love.
Tumblr media
Reading Yumi Tamura's mystery to iunakare, something that totonou states abt feminism is also abt liberating men and it got me into thinking abt kaze hikaru.
Tumblr media
Okita slowly let's himself experience this emotion called romantic love, it doesn't make him weak, it made him strong and he is liberating himself from society's expectations of patriarchy as he let's kamiya be by his side as his protector and to rely on her. He doesn't have to think that he needs to provide for her as a man then only he is capable of loving her, or that it means he lost his resolve in his swordsmanship. He sees her as an equal to compete!!!!
Tumblr media
#for a bakumatsu manga abt pride and honour of a man kaze hikaru provides good insight with gender bends and misogyny
#the purpose of gender bends like even in ranma 1/2 as ranma comes to love being a girl
#doesnt mean its perfect manga
#i wish i could take away the pen from taeko watanabe and give it to yumi tamura at times lol
#places where Watanabe herself gives into the misogyny of the times
#kunou totonou i love you

Akira and Mizuki ruined my life. I was so convinced they’d end up together after everyone started calling Akira gay. It genuinely felt like losing chess to a dog
Tumblr media
Was genuinely flabbergasted with that ending. no way akira homotron5000 ended up with hajime…… it’s funny until u remember watanabe taeko also wrote oh! family and took away reeve’s homosexuality #Noticing #GayboysCantWin

Finished Live A Live today.
9/10 for me, with the point off being for my issue with the Trials. There are three other complaints I'd like to make however, all due to the remake.
1) I feel like Akira teleporting out of battle to random places was originally meant to be a hint as how to access his trial. I know they were removing the more sexual content for the remake (teleporting into the bathroom while Taeko is using it, Watanabe stealing Taeko's underwear, Annie's nighties being replaced with her diary, Beru no longer flashing Pogo when presented with the maternity idol but instead is implied to have sex with him…which really isn't toning it down), but I felt they could have at least left the other random teleports in rather than treating it like a normal flee command and therefore keep the the hint. I mean, they do explain teleports are random when it's explained but they took that random nature out of it. They took the element out, yet still referenced the element because that element was supposed to be the means to access Akira's dungeon and get his best weapon.
2) Pogo is supposed to say the first word mankind ever says, love. But they didn't dub the line, so it remained the Japanese "ai". He just screams "ai" and it's importance is lost. I mean, I like the idea of him hugging Oersted to calm him down rather than just screaming love in his face, and you can see how that was changed because the original would be lost in translation because they decided not to dub over him. But it's the only word he knows, he keeps saying it in scenes where he's in, and it's actually supposed to have meaning to it rather than being a random sound. Keep the hug, have him maybe say a rough "luv" instead.
3) I also found Cube a pain in the ass to use, simply because he needs a random drop to slowly increase in power. In the old version, you could easily stock up on these in Akira's chapter and then use them on Cube. They took that out for the remake, the robotic enhancements are the only item that does this.
As for each party member in the final chapter:
Akira started the chapter strong due to how easy he was to level up in his chapter, but as the others caught up to his level and the enemies scaled to that, he lost his edge.
Masaru starts with the lowest level, but I had most of his techniques from his chapter minus his ultimate move. Still, when he levels up his stats quickly turn him into a near unstoppable tank. Learn his final move and he's wiping out enemies like it's nothing.
Yun had some good variety, but was very fragile. Learning his ult, which needs to be activated at a safe distance and needs no charging, and once again I have a guy who is wiping the floor with enemies that were tough to damage.
Pogo was let down by his equipment until I got his best weapon, and while his alt was powerful it also lowered his stats after using. He also worked nice as a tank, so I fell into a pattern of using his alt and then using the medicine box from Oboromaru's chapter to restore his stats.
Oboromaru started out as fragile as Yun, and even starting with one of his chapter's best weapons he wasn't pulling his weight even with his versitility. Though his ult combined with his speed made spamming it a joke
Sunset is once again fragile, attacks at a distance, and his ult rivaled Pogo in damage but was held back by having a long charge period.
Cube was good at healing those immediately around him, but is let down by being unable to level up… though leveling him up would have made him OP as fuck. Like he had that one move that just wipes out all weak enemies on the screen at once. I didn't really need a healer too much though since I had Oboromaru's medicine box, which is infinite use and boosts all stats. Having him in the party though, with him being unable to level up, is probably a blessing and a curse due to the enemies scaling with party level. Blessing because once your party's levels are above Cube's his presence would keep the enemy level down, but at the same time this would also slow down exp gain for the rest of the party meaning more grinding.
My main team going into the final battle was Akira (my lead), Pogo (I recruited him as a tank after completing Masaru's trial), Oboromaru (second last recruit/trial) and Sunset (last recruit and trial). Only thing I didn't do in the final chapter was the optional boss that comes when you've fled your 100th battle. Of them all, Masaru, Yun, Pogo, Oboromaru and Sunset all needed some work before they were kicking ass, Akira probably would have needed it as well if grinding in his chapter wasn't so easy due to enemies scaling there as well, and Cube is the one I'd assume is the challenge run.
But all that said, I would definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't already. Makes me want to check out Undertale sometime, because if Undertale is even half as great as this then I can see why people love it so.
