wiliam seward's friendships make me delirious. what do you mean he was bffs with henry foote and john c calhoun was mad about it. what do you mean he was besties with jefferson davis in 1850 and that seward visited him every day when he was sick. what do you mean that seward asked davis for help when a duel almost occurred between two other senators and that the two of them (with crittenden) resolved the duel by making the disputers have dinner at seward's house. what do you mean that seward's house was on F Street, the one the F Street Mess was on. that jefferson davis felt that a cross-sectional settlement was possible "because of his relationship with seward". What do you mean people hoped to be placed next to seward whenever senate seats were reassigned.

A Dream Tarnished: The Tragic Idealism and Uncertain Legacy of Assassin’s Creed III
Tumblr media
To this day, what sets Assassin’s Creed III apart from other titles is that it feels like a historical story told within a fictional frame rather than the reverse. While many games in the series feature a fictional story enriched by historical settings, AC3 flips this approach. At its core, if you strip away the assassins, Templars, hidden blades, leaps of faith, and the unending struggle for mystical artifacts, what remains is a raw, haunting story about the impact of colonialism.
Here, we follow an innocent and noble native idealist whose life and ideals are ravaged and manipulated by colonial brutality. He's forced to grapple with a world that doesn’t value the fairness he envisions, where his allies don’t fully share his belief in freedom for all. Driven by hope yet painfully aware of the compromises he must make, he fights on, striving for change. And yet, even in victory, he is left questioning whether his sacrifices truly made the world better or worse—a heavy uncertainty that underscores the complexities of the very nation he helped build.

A. Philip Randolph was a labor leader and social activist. During World War I, Randolph tried to unionize African American shipyard workers and elevator operators, and co-launched a magazine designed to encourage demand for higher wages. He later founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which by 1937 would become the first official African American labor union.
In the 1940s, Randolph's abilities as an organizer had grown to such lengths that he became the driving force in ending racial discrimination in government defense factories and desegregating the armed forces, both done via presidential decree. Becoming involved in additional civil rights work, he was a principal organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.
Born Asa Philip Randolph on April 15, 1889 in Crescent City, Florida and died on May 16, 1979 in Manhattan, New York, New York at the age of 90.

Washington Monument, 8/31/77
Wow, what a view. I fixed up the radio relay atop the Washington Monument, and it looks like GNR is going to be heard loud and clear across the Wasteland!
I spotted the Lincoln Memorial on the other side of the tower, and walked up to the guys occupying the place -- turns out they were slavers. There's nothing worse than people like that, so I cleared them up nice and easy with the Fat Man I had. I'll keep an eye out for the runaway slaves to let them know things are going to get better for them.
I headed back to GNR through the tunnels; I didn't realize just how much of a maze this city had become from the bombs -- so much rubble left and right I could barely tell where to go.
Made it back to the studios pretty late, so I crashed at Three Dog's over night. Gotta head back over the river eventually, so I guess now is as good as ever.

Fuck it, I’ll answer all of them.
1. My Boss prefers to keep his real name and pre-Saints life behind. As far as he’s concerned, his life truly started once he was caught in the crossfire of the Carnales, Rollerz and Vice Kings in the SR1 opening cutscene.
2. Saints Row 1 and 2 are canon to my Boss’ story. SRTT is some Hollywood hack’s script for a movie about the Saints. Saints Row IV and Gooh is fanfiction by weirdos who thirst after criminals and killers and ship real people.
3. Probably dabbled in small time drug dealing. Easier to sell drugs without talking than being silent in “real” jobs.
4. He saw Julius as a father figure, Troy as the cool older brother, Johnny as the badass brother and Dex as the smart brother. Had a crush on Lin. Loathes Donny not only for not lifting a finger to save Lin, but because how much he hates cowards. By SR2, he and Johnny are like brothers, Shaundi is like a sister and Pierce is the friend he secretly respects, but likes to fuck with and get under his skin.
5. Born and bred in Stilwater.
6. I see Playa being in his early to mid twenties or at the least aged 18-19 in SR1.
7. No pairings. Has trouble connecting with people on a romantic level after the events of SR2. Probably has fuck buddies that he’s on good terms with, but no romantic relationship
8. Was somewhat attracted to Samantha but never acted on it or showed it. Had a massive crush on Lin. Her death hit him hard and was the beginning of his dark turn.
9. No family outside. Cut ties with them when he came of age.
10. He went from a loyal grunt who saw Julius as a father figure to a cynical, ruthless, teetering on paranoia, strong and charismatic gang leader whose main drive is his rage at the world for betraying him.
11. We both like 80′s music.
12. He is about as different from me in personality as he can get.
13. He’s a straight male but isn’t embarrassed compliment another man’s attractiveness.
14. Male Voice 1 from SR2 aka thick English accent voice. Best voice in the franchise.
15. The idea that Boss was “too scared to talk back then”. I like to think he was really embarrassed about his English accent, especially since its not really “gangsta”. So he fakes an American accent in the first game.
16. I try to include as much of in-game tomfoolery, lore and shenanigans as possible.
17. If SRIV was canon to my boss, the most likely romance, with how its portrayed, would probably be Shaundi. Yes, I’m a vanilla straight guy. Sue me.
18. Johnny Gat is his best friend, and he considered Dex a close second before his betrayal. He was also fond of Chicken Ned and Samantha.
19. He favors the katana as far as melee weapons go, because he views it as an exotic weapons and the fact that he gets an ego boost because he beat Jyunichi at his own game
20. In-game tats only, all Saints related.
21. He sees the lieutenants as equals. He’d also expect them to either leads the Saints together or figure out who the new leader is, should anything happen to Boss.
22. What are your Boss’ favourite movie genres?
⚜ Saints Row Bosses Ask Meme ⚜
It's a lot of questions but maybe that will incline people to pick multiple?
1. Is your Boss's name a secret? Do some people know but not others? Do they use a pseudonym? A nickname?
2. What games do you play this Boss in or what games are canon to the story you imagine for them?
The Third. What job/jobs was your Boss doing (if any) before joining the Saints?
IV. What is or was your Boss's relationship with <asker chooses character> like?
5. Were they born in Stilwater? If not, where are they from and how did they end up there?
6. What is their birthday or date of birth OR how old do you see them as in the games you play them in?
7. Do you have an OTP/OT3+/endgame pairing etc. with them?
8. Do they have other sexual or romantic connections?
9. What family does your Boss have or if they have a lot, what family are particularly important to them?
10. How has your Boss changed throughout the games/years?
11. One or more ways your Boss is similar to you
12. One or more ways your Boss is different to you
13. What is their gender/sexuality/romantic orientation/pronouns etc. (either all, or asker specifies)?
14. Which voice does your Boss have? Or if you imagine them speaking differently to one of the in-game voices, describe it.
15. Are there any small things about them in the canon that you've really run with in your headcanon?
16. Is there anything from the games you've drastically avoided or downplayed in your headcanon?
17. If you play them in SRIV... which of the romance options, if any, are headcanon to you? xD
18. Do they have a best/closest friend?
19. Does your Boss have a favourite gun or other weapon?
20. Do they have any tattoos? Are they from the game or something you created?
21. Do they have a second-in-command or are all their lieutenants equal?
22. Another question not listed here!

Why Magneto’s Storyline in X-Men: Apocalypse is The Worst (it’s not just Cherik)
Ok I just need to vent because this has been chewing away at my brain for far too long.
Cherik is far from the only reason why Erik’s family plotline in X-Men: Apocalypse is some of the stupidest, sloppiest, and most character-ruining pieces of writing I’ve ever seen. Haters may say “oh you’re just upset because he married someone who wasn’t Charles.” But, like, aside from the fact that the original timeline already established that Erik’s top priority was always the fight for mutantkind and he had no interest in settling down - whether that had anything to do with his feelings for Charles or not - the problems with the Apocalypse writing go WAY beyond just him & Charles:
Erik would never abandon his cause at this point. By the end of DOFP, Erik has just been imprisoned for a full 10 years thanks to the JFK situation. Meaning he has spent a full decade being forcibly inactive in the fight for mutants. And he just learned that all of his fears about humans and mutants came to pass in the future to the level where a time-traveler had to be sent to change the past. And he was so set on averting that future that he tried to kill his friend and the sister of the man he loved, and then made a whole speech on international TV begging for the mutants of the world to fight alongside him. This is the POLAR OPPOSITE of a man who would feel like settling down and walking away from the fight within the next decade. The Sentinels being cancelled did NOT make mutant life easy overnight; Stryker was still up to no good, and there is no way that there weren’t others like him doing the same. Yes, Raven’s actions made a very positive difference, but I think we have enough brain cells to agree that this did not mean things for mutants immediately became sunshine and rainbows to the level where Erik - the most (understandably) paranoid character in the X-Men series - would even consider taking a break, let alone giving up the fight permanently. Knowing what he did about the possibilities of the future would’ve made the Erik we know double down on his commitment to his cause and follow up on his actions in Washington.
Erik wouldn’t risk starting a young family at this moment in his life. Erik was a Holocaust prisoner, his people were massacred, his mom was shot when he couldn’t move the coin, and then Charles was shot when Erik accidentally deflected a bullet into him, and then every member of his Brotherhood save Raven were captured and killed. Not only is this more than enough grief for one character to have, but the man wouldn’t dare risk having a new family of his own when everyone he’s ever loved has gotten hurt (largely because of him), and when he’s an international fugitive. That is no time to risk being selfish, and he would know. He would’ve been the first to realize that a potential spouse and child would also end up killed, and so he’d avoid that altogether. In fact, he wouldn’t even consider it, because, as mentioned, he wouldn’t leave his cause behind. You know, if he was actually in character.
Magda is a human. At this point, Erik hates humans. Again, he has just been imprisoned by humans for 10 years for trying to save a mutant, and he just learned that in the future, humans would’ve wiped out mutants, exactly as he feared. Everything that happened in DOFP would only further inflame his already-passionate hatred of humans. He is not in the mental state to even begin to consider Charles’ philosophy and give a human a chance at a relationship, let alone marry a human.
The family lives in Poland. The country where Auschwitz is. The country where Erik and his family and people was imprisoned, tortured, and executed. The country where Erik had to watch Shaw kill his mother. Basically the LAST country in the freaking WORLD that Erik would want to ever see again, let alone spend the rest of his life in. Erik is fluent in multiple languages - he is shown to easily converse in French and Spanish in First Class - and has been all over the world thanks to his Nazi hunting, so if he really needed to flee the U.S., there were a hundred other countries he could’ve gone to and blended into (Canada, France, Mexico, anywhere in South America, heck, he even could’ve discovered Genosha during this time). But in the original timeline, he didn’t leave the U.S. at all despite being a national fugitive after escaping his plastic prison, and he never did get caught again, so….
Erik’s first meeting with Magda is completely OOC for him. Erik mentions that he told Magda who he was the first night they met and he trusted her then. EXCUSE ME??? Erik Lehnsherr does not trust strangers. Erik Lehnsherr does not tell the complete truth about himself and his past to just anyone; look at how deeply Charles had to probe before Erik opened up to him. This stupid line was obviously shoehorned in just to make their relationship seem like perfect soulmates and thus ensure it is doubly tragic when she gets thrown in the fridge 5 minutes later (more on that in a sec). Obviously the intention is for the audience to go “aww, he instantly trusted her, she instantly accepted him, this is true love…” Give me a break. You’re really telling me that Magda met this stranger one night, found out he was none other than the international fugitive who apparently killed the U.S. president and just tried to kill another president on live TV, and went “oh, no problem, honey, let’s make a baby and live the cottagecore dream!” That’s some BS if I’ve ever heard it, and I’m convinced the writers subconsciously knew it; there’s a reason that is revealed in a throwaway line rather than shown onscreen, because then nobody would’ve bought it.
Fridging. Magda and Nina exist in the movie for one reason and one reason only: To get brutally killed and give Erik even more grief and trauma so that he’ll seek revenge on the entire world, aka do what the plot demands of him, aka have the same journey as he did in First Class (more on that in a sec). That’s all. Neither of them are any more than one-dimensional plot devices. They are not characters at all. Magda isn’t even named in the actual movie (he doesn’t even say her name when she dies) - it’s so obvious they didn’t even know what her name would be when they made the movie. This is textbook fridging, and one of the worst examples of it of all time. It’s all the worse considering that Erik never met Magda in the original pre-DOFP timeline, meaning Magda originally most likely lived a long happy life and died old in bed. But now, she gets fridged just because the writers didn’t know what more to do with Erik. It’s misogyny of the highest level.
A parenthood story for Erik was already set up. DOFP already hinted at Erik being a father, with Peter’s comment about his mom. So if the writers wanted to show Erik as a father, and to include Magda, they already had a solution that would seamlessly flow from the previous film - make Erik and Peter’s relationship one of the centerpieces of the story, and let Magda be Peter’s mom! (You know, like she is in the comics!)
It doesn’t contribute anything new to Erik’s character development. From a screenwriting POV, this is unforgivable. May I remind you that Erik’s entire storyline in First Class revolved around grief and trauma for the loss of his family and people, especially his mom, and seeking revenge for it. Giving him a wife and daughter just so they can get killed too adds absolutely NOTHING to his character development. It’s merely retreading everything that already happened in his arc: he loses his family and goes on a roaring rampage of revenge. Completely superfluous, right down to Charles insisting that there’s good in him beyond the pain. The redundancy becomes apparent even in the dialogue, where Charles literally says “I told you since I first met you there’s good in you too.” The script itself can’t help but point out that all of this has happened before and literally nothing new has been added to Erik’s character arc.
See? It’s not just because of Cherik. Erik’s story in X-Men: Apocalypse is an atrocity in basic screenwriting and character development, on every level. And I will never accept it.
(Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way…)

I feel like Connor would be the type of person who would casually lore drop on you without blinking. Like he could be helping miriam and norris at the homestead and casually be like "I killed my dad last week"
I agree that Ratonhnhaké:ton would casually drop lore without any gravitas, like he was just talking about the fox he saw on his morning walk.
But he wouldn’t talk about how he killed people because (1) he knew that some people wouldn’t want to hear that and also (2) it’s a step into the whole “do not compromise the brotherhood” tenet.
He will say something like “Washington ordered the burning of my village”.
But anything that can be connected to the Brotherhood? He wouldn’t talk about them. He will casually lore dump stuff like that to fellow Assassins though once he’s close enough to them that he considered them as friends.

This is an interesting fact, because Rev. King had been due to visit Israel in 1967, I believe, but eventually did not because Israel had just launched the Six-Day War.
I should also note that Rev. King spoke out against the appalling treatment of Soviet Jews around 1967 or 1968.
This year marked the 60th anniversary of the legendary March on Washington, where thousands of mostly black workers came to demand proper working conditions and civil rights. The Rev. King spoke words that have resonated throughout the last sixty years, his famous I Have A Dream speech in which he challenged America to live up to its belief in the equality of man and give the black population their due rights since the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law and in 1965, the Voting Rights Act.
Although many, many great civil rights leaders were involved in the effort for black American rights, Rev. King stands out for his powerful oratory, his effective use of nonviolence, and his effective ability to appeal to white American audiences, Christians, and Jews by compelling them to consistently apply the moral teachings inherited through religion and Western law. Rev. King's Letter From A Birmingham Jail is perhaps the best example of this.

have you read any fics where charles is experimented on? specifically for his powers and as his younger version
Anon, here are some excellent stories about Charles being experimented on:

Brian Xavier experiments on his only son, believing it will make him powerful. Years later, Charles Xavier still suffers from the aftereffects.
Smile (The worst is yet to come) by hllfire
Charles' telepathy developed when he was a baby. His father, driven by his desire to know more about his son's abilities, experiments on him, causing Charles to learn to ignore visual and social cues in order to rely heavily on his telepathy to interact with others.
When Erik doesn't allow him to see his mind like Charles would normally do, Charles is lost.
Thou Shalt Not Eat Stones by valancysnaith
Two months after Washington, Raven found Erik in a skeevy motel off the Florida interstate.
“They have Charles, Erik,” she said.
The bedframe shrieked. In the bathroom, the showerhead snapped in half and clattered into the tub.
the mystery which binds me still by pocky_slash
It's been seventeen years since Charles lived at the house in North Salem. It's big and imposing and filled with memories he thinks he's repressed for a reason. But after a strange man breaks in during a storm, demanding to see people Charles is sure died years ago, Charles finds himself investigating his past for the first time, venturing into the burnt out catacombs that hold the secret to the childhood he doesn't remember.
Powers and Control by flightinflame
Hank and the others turn up at the Brotherhood, asking for Erik's help. They might hate him, but he is the only one who has a chance of rescuing Charles and bringing him home.
Hand in Hand by flightinflame
Charles is used to being experimented on. Meeting one of his father's friends should have been simple, but he finds himself kidnapped. It is there, in his kidnapper's base, that he meets Erik - and that changes everything.

Alexander Miles, a prominent African-American inventor of the late 19th century, is best known for his groundbreaking invention - elevator doors that could open and close automatically. This invention transformed the safety of elevator rides, with automatic doors now considered a standard feature in modern elevators.
Born on May 18, 1838, in Circleville, Ohio, Alexander Miles was the son of Michael and Mary Miles. As a young adult, he relocated to Waukesha, Wisconsin, where he worked as a barber throughout the 1860s. It was while living in Winona, Minnesota, in 1870, that he met Candace J. Dunlap from New York City, who later became his wife. After the birth of their daughter, Grace, the family moved to Duluth, Minnesota.
In Duluth, Miles enjoyed significant success as a barber, setting up a barbershop in the four-story St. Louis Hotel. He smartly invested his savings into purchasing a real estate office. His business acumen led to him becoming the first Black member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. In 1884, Miles constructed a three-story brownstone building in an area that later came to be known as the “Miles Block.”
While taking elevator rides in his buildings, Miles noticed the dangerous risks associated with manually operated elevator shaft doors being left open. Determined to solve this problem, he invented a mechanism that allowed elevator shaft doors to operate at the correct times. The mechanism, which involved a flexible belt attached to the elevator cage touching drums positioned along the elevator shaft, automated the elevator doors through a series of levers and rollers. On October 11, 1887, Alexander Miles was granted a patent for his life-saving invention (U.S. Patent 371,207).
In 1899, Miles and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he started The United Brotherhood, a life insurance company for Black customers who were denied coverage by White-owned firms. Eventually, Miles relocated to Seattle, Washington. Prior to his death on May 7, 1918, he was considered the wealthiest Black person in the Pacific Northwest area, largely due to the income from his invention. In recognition of his contributions, Alexander Miles was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2007.

one seat distance between seward and sumner & davis and douglas makes me supremely sorry for whoever is sitting there (also fessenden is right before sumner, which makes me imagine that he's having a very bad time listening to the two guys snapping at each other from behind him)
apparently the way people determined which seats were Good or Bad in the senate back then was based on a. how close it was to the president's chair and b. how close it was to known popular kid william seward

While serving as governor of Minnesota, presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz hosted an Islamic imam multiple times who has a history of pro-Hamas social media posts and gave $100,000 worth of grants to a Muslim organization he leads, the Washington Examiner first reported.
Walz hosted Imam Asad Zaman of the Muslim American Society (MAS) of Minnesota on at least five occasions during his tenure as governor, according to the Examiner. Zaman, on his Facebook account, shared a Hamas press release in 2016, a link to a blog post attacking Jews in 2014, praised the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on multiple occasions in 2023 and even posted a link to a documentary praising Adolf Hitler in 2015.
“It is astounding that with all the available public reporting and information about the iniquities of Imam Asad Zaman and MAS Minnesota that Gov. Walz has repeatedly given public platforms and taxpayer money to this extremist,” Sam Westrop, a terrorism researcher and analyst at the Middle East Forum think tank, told the Examiner. “Across the country, Islamists hungry for government support will surely welcome Walz as vice president.”
Zaman serves as the executive director of MAS Minnesota, an organization federal prosecutors at one point said was “founded as the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States,” according to court records. The United Arab Emirates designated MAS as a terrorist organization in 2014, the Examiner reported.
Walz’s administration, however, showered the group with over $100,000 in grant funding, according to state records and press releases.

Today In History
Asa Philip Randolph, labor leader, and civil-rights leader, was born in Crescent City, FL, on this date April 15, 1889.
Randolph who was an influential figure in the struggle for justice and equality for African Americans. He was the organizer of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and began organizing that group of Black workers. At a time when half the affiliates of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) barred Blacks from membership, Asa Phillip Randolph took his union into the AFL.
Despite opposition, he built the first successful Black trade union; the brotherhood won its first major contract with the Pullman Company in 1937.
He warned Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt that he would lead thousands of Blacks in a protest march on Washington, D.C.; Roosevelt, on June 25, 1941, issued Executive Order 8802, barring discrimination in defense industries and federal bureaus and creating the Fair Employment Practices Committee.

Galaxy News Radio 8/26/77
Snuck through the cold, dark metro tunnels for what felt like days to reach GNR. I absolutely hated it. When I got to the complex I was saved from an onslaught of super mutants by the Brotherhood of Steel, who had been guarding GNR.
I met Sarah Lyons and a few other paladins with old power armor suits -- wish I had my hands on one of those, and they threw me this Fat Man to take care of a Super Mutant Behemoth who had broken through the ranks.
This is the first time I've ever felt fearful for my own life, in need of protection myself. I've been developing an addiction to Buffout, which if left untreated could get really ugly.
I agreed to help Three Dog get the radio station broadcasting across the Wasteland. For all this talk of a "good fight," it sure got me fighting to protect it. I think I trust these people and their mission.

Actors and writers want fans to help their Hollywood strike. Here’s how.
How are strikers encouraging audiences to get involved?
SAG-AFTRA and WGA members have used social media to spread information about the strike, detailing how viewers can support entertainment workers’ demands for higher minimum pay, improved safety and more streaming residuals. Among their recommendations for aiding the strike efforts are sharing, liking and commenting on posts about the recently expired SAG-AFTRA contract because “actors are working people just like everyone else.”
“There’s a lot of misconception that our union is about stars and celebrities,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator.
Most of the guild’s 160,000 members, he said, are “working actors who are trying to make a living, pay their bills, pay their rent.”
Actors and writers are encouraging fans to join the picket line in their local area to increase strike visibility. They say people can bring signs, water and snacks to picketers. Union-allied organizations such as the Directors Guild of America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States have thrown their support behind the strike effort in person and online, joining a broader coalition of unions pushing against mistreatment in the workplace.
Crabtree-Ireland said strike supporters could aid the effort by amplifying the union’s demands with social media posts and donations to fundraisers for SAG-AFTRA members. Boycotting projects made by the AMPTP is not the priority, he added.
“We’re not at this time calling for a boycott of anybody. Our focus is on shutting down production. … But that’s not to say that that won’t be something we do in the future,” he said.
How can entertainment workers receive financial support during the strike?
Several organizations have committed to supporting members of SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. Some of the most prominent funds are SAG-AFTRA’s Entertainment Community Fund and nonaffiliated crowdsourced fundraisers like the Union Solidarity Coalition Fund, Groceries for Writers and the Snacklist.
The fundraisers say they provide resources that include mental health support, health insurance, counseling, career resources, budgeting tips and grocery aid.
