There’s also plenty of art galleries - the ones whose collections skew more towards a specific art historical time period rather than contemporary art - that have digitized collections on their website. And a lot of them have a section in their drop down menu to show works in the public domain.

And as a practising artist myself, if someone took a photo from my website or instagram and reposted it with my name and a link I wouldn’t be mad. I’d be excited someone liked my work enough to share it - as long as I’m given proper credit.

That’s the exact way I’ve found so many artists (living and dead) I love on this website. Thanks to people who go through digital gallery and museum archives, art databases and artist websites and post works of art along with the basic information you’d see on a placard in a museum. The title, year, artist name, medium and dimensions. And since this is an online medium the source of the image, so that same museum archive/database/artist website.

Enjoying art cannot be just appreciating the final product, it has to include the person who made the work as well. And for artists who are still living and trying to make a living off their art practise, online credit is extremely important.

I hate moodboards. Where did you get these images? What is the source? Who took these photographs? Who is the artist?

If you think that including credit to the person who made this piece of art is ruining your watered down appreciation that you call your aesthetic then you and I do not appreciate visual art in the same way.

Art is work, art is labour. Someone has spent their time, money, and expertise to develop their practise and create this thing. And you were too careless to even copy and paste their name to include in your post.

Not including an artists name is actively devaluing art as a whole. It shouldn’t be about pretty images that you scroll past as quickly as possible until you’ve had your visual fill. Art has more value than that. When you scrub the name of the artist from their piece you turn their art into a digital consumable. It commodifies their work and robs others of being able to learn more about the creator and their wider practice. And it does the artist (if they’re still alive) direct material, financial harm.

You want to support artists? That includes fine artists. People who make the types of works of art you’d see in a gallery. Photographers, painters, sculptors etc. Though the field we work in is all about money, most of us aren’t rich. We make art because we feel called to. And for many of us we cannot do anything else. Most artists aren’t lucky enough to make art full time, it doesn’t pay enough. The least you could do is include the artist’s name when you post a photo of a piece of art that person has lovingly crafted.

#18 “I didn’t get soaked through walking to your house for you to say no to pizza. I have beer, too. I know you’re sad, let me in.”

(the others are in my prompts list this is just the first one I finished.) 

“Wei Ying.”

“Lan Zhan? What are you doing here?”

“Saw you upset earlier.” He holds out the pizza and a bag with a 6-pack to Wei Ying. “Wanted to make sure you ate.”

Wei Ying looks at his offerings and slowly takes them. “Thank you.”

Lan Zhan looks at him. He looks less upset than he did earlier, so Lan Zhan has done alright. He looks at Wei Ying for another beat, then nods and turns to leave.

“Lan Zhan, ah, Lan Zhan where are you going?!”

Lan Zhan turns back. “Don’t want to overstay my welcome.”

“No, no. Come in, I’d like the company.” Wei Ying smiles softly at him.

Lan Zhan is glad to see it. After Jin Zixuan insulted his sister and Wei Ying was dragged away before he could defend her, he hadn’t smiled all day. Lan Zhan doesn’t mind their work, but a big part of the reason he hasn’t left yet is because Wei Ying is there, and he’s not quite ready to live life without seeing him smile every day. He could get a job closer to his house that pays a little better, but that wouldn’t have Wei Ying.

When Wei Ying isn’t smiling his days don’t feel complete. He wanted to make Wei Ying smile if he could.  

He feels out of place here, like he shouldn’t have delivered it to Wei Ying’s door. Maybe he should have ordered it to his place instead – like a surprise.

Instead, Wei Ying is gesturing him inside his apartment. Lan Zhan is already weak for Wei Ying’s smile, he’s bought a whole meal this evening for that smile. Of course, when Wei Ying smiles and invites him into his apartment, he’s going to go in.

This doesn’t help his rising feeling of awkwardness, though.

Wei Ying’s apartment is nice. It’s a little small, and there’s a nest of blankets on the sofa, like Wei Ying had been curled up there before Lan Zhan interrupted.

“I just got off the phone with my shijie, I-“ Wei Ying stops mid-sentence. “You’re all wet.”

“Raining.”

“Lan Zhan! You need to dry off, go and take a shower or something, I’ll find you some dry clothes.”

“Pizza will get cold.”

“I’ll warm it up, I want you to eat with me.”

Wangji guesses he should change. He is soaked through, he hadn’t really noticed until Wei Ying pointed it out. “Can I have a towel?”

Wei Ying jolts like he had forgotten that Wangji is standing there dripping on his carpet, and hurries off into one of the adjoining rooms, saying “of course, of course!”

Wangji changes into Wei Ying’s clothes, trying not to note too closely that they carry the lotus scent Wei Ying always has around him.

Wei Ying is standing by the microwave, heating the pizza slice by slice.

There’s a smile back in his eyes, and it makes Wangji’s lips twitch up. He knew he had missed seeing Wei Ying smile, but he didn’t realise just how much.

“This doesn’t seem like your usual kind of idea.” Wei Ying says.

Wangji looks at him and makes and enquiring “Mn?” sound.

Wei Ying holds up the beer.

Wangji looks down and hopes his ears aren’t too red. “Xiongzhang’s idea. He said –“

Wangji stops himself. He doesn’t want to say it out loud. He gets his phone, unlocks it, and shows Wei Ying the messages from his brother.

Bring him pizza and beer, he’ll like that. It’s raining, you can say “I didn’t get soaked through walking to your house for you to say no to pizza. I have beer, too. I know you’re sad, let me in.”

Wei Ying snorts. “I would always let you in, Lan Zhan, you don’t have to nearly get hypothermia to get into my house.”

Lan Zhan smiles very softly at him, and distinctly hears Wei Ying’s breath catch.

Wei Ying retreats to the kitchen.

Lan Zhan arranges the blankets so two of them can sit in the nest Wei Ying has created.

Wei Ying comes through holding two plates, and smiles at him.

Lan Zhan asks him about his day, and Wei Ying speaks while they eat. Lan Zhan tells him about his rabbits breaking the ramp in their hutch, and delightedly listens to Wei Ying’s laughter as he admits he might have been overfeeding them. Well, the black one mostly.

He shouldn’t have favourites, but that rabbit –

When they finish eating, Wei Ying is back to his usual self.

“Hey, Lan Zhan, can you stay here tonight? I’ll sleep on the sofa, you can have my bed. I don’t really want to be alone.”

Wangji nods, and wishes he was more of a physical person so he could pull Wei Ying into his arms.

He doesn’t have to wish for long, because Wei Ying pushes him into a comfortable position then leans against him, tucking his legs beneath him and putting his head on Wangji’s shoulder.

“Pick something for us to watch, Lan Zhan, I’m just going to close my eyes.”

Wangji carefully puts his arm over Wei Ying’s shoulders, then picks something random which he ignores in favour of watching Wei Ying’s eyelashes flutter. It’s past nine, so he’s just as exhausted as Wei Ying seems to be.

When he wakes up, they’ve somehow arranged themselves into lying down on the sofa, Wei Ying lying on his chest, in his arms.

It feels right in a way Lan Zhan hasn’t experienced before.

He should get up. He shifts slightly and Wei Ying burrows further into his warmth.

Maybe ten more minutes.

2017 Was One of Our Planet’s Hottest Years on Record

We just finished the second hottest year on Earth since global temperature estimates first became feasible in 1880. Although 2016 still holds the record for the warmest year, 2017 came in a close second, with average temperatures 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the mean.

2017’s temperature record is especially noteworthy, because we didn’t have an El Niño this year. Often, the two go hand-in-hand.

El Niño is a climate phenomenon that causes warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean waters, which affect wind and weather patterns around the world, usually resulting in warmer temperatures globally. 2017 was the warmest year on record without an El Niño.

We collect the temperature data from 6,300 weather stations and ship- and buoy-based observations around the world, and then analyze it on a monthly and yearly basis. Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) do a similar analysis; we’ve been working together on temperature analyses for more than 30 years. Their analysis of this year’s temperature data tracks closely with ours.

The 2017 temperature record is an average from around the globe, so different places on Earth experienced different amounts of warming. NOAA found that the United States, for instance, had its third hottest year on record, and many places still experienced cold winter weather.

Other parts of the world experienced abnormally high temperatures throughout the year. Earth’s Arctic regions are warming at roughly twice the rate of the rest of the planet, which brings consequences like melting polar ice and rising sea levels.

Increasing global temperatures are the result of human activity, specifically the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. The gases trap heat inside the atmosphere, raising temperatures around the globe.  

We combine data from our fleet of spacecraft with measurements taken on the ground and in the air to continue to understand how our climate is changing. We share this important data with partners and institutions across the U.S. and around the world to prepare and protect our home planet.

Global warming data that riled doubters is confirmed

WASHINGTON -- A new independent study shows no pause in global warming, confirming a set of temperature readings adjusted by U.S. government scientists that some who reject mainstream climate science have questioned. The new international study looked at satellite data, readings from buoys and other marine floats for ocean temperatures. Each measurement system independently showed the same 20 years of increase in temperatures that NOAA found: about two-tenths of a degree Fahrenheit per decade since 2000, said the study's lead author. "Our research confirms that NOAA scientists were right," Hausfather said. "They were not in any way cooking the books." #NOAA #WarmingTrend
