C.R.O.W (Chapter 18)
Tensions ran high as they returned to the base. Grendel and Milo remained unconscious, each bound to separate chairs. The situation was unusual - vampires were never brought back to the base. Normally, they were taken to the warehouse or not transported at all. But these two were different. They seemed so human, so kind. Even now, knowing their true nature, it was difficult to see them as monsters. Ashley B stood beside Victoria, her expression mirroring the turmoil Victoria felt inside.
The room filled with the heated shouts of Rex and Miller, reverberating from the conference room, intensifying the already palpable tension. It was only then that Victoria noticed Justin's absence. She scanned the room, searching for any sign of him, but he was nowhere to be found.
As the shouting subsided, Rex and Miller emerged from the conference room. Miller wore a scowl that made Rex appear small- something Victoria wasn't use to seeing. Without hesitation, Miller strode over to Ashley B, his voice dripping with authority. "Go home," he commanded, pointing towards the door.
"I'm not a child," Ashley B protested, but her father refused to back down. Victoria found herself involuntarily taking a step back, sensing the simmering anger radiating from Miller.
"We have two vampires, one who's heart was just torn out and is somehow still sitting in front of us. We have no idea how strong they are. And more importantly, I'm still your father," Miller's eyes blazed with rage. "Go home."
For a fleeting moment, Victoria thought Ashley B might stand her ground. But as she turned to leave, Miller directed his attention to Rex. "Wake the blond up first. He's the weaker of the two."
Almost instantaneously, the second injection jolted Grendel awake. His head swayed, and his eyes fluttered open as he struggled to make sense of his surroundings. Miller loomed before him, arms crossed in a posture of dominance.
"Where am I?" Grendel's voice came out slow and groggy as he blinked, attempting to bring clarity to his hazy mind.
Grendel's pupils dilated, engulfing most of his eyes, leaving only a thin ring of bright gold encircling the darkness. The light in the room reflected off his mesmerizing eyes, amplifying the unease and uncertainty that permeated the air.
Miller, standing over him, proceeded to interrogate him. "Do you remember what happened?" When Grendel shook his head, Miller persisted. "What do you remember then?" he asked, his presence intimidating.
Grendel let out a sigh, attempting to gather his thoughts while constrained in the chair. "Why does it feel like a train ran over me?" His head drooped momentarily before he looked up, a faint smirk forming on his lips. "Funny thing is, I normally enjoy a good train." His attention fell on Victoria as he gave her a quick wink.
Miller's frown deepened as he grabbed Grendel by the back of his head. "We know you're a vampire. And you're going to answer our questions, whether you like it or not. You've been injected with a drug that makes it impossible to lie," Miller's words dripped with a mixture of frustration and determination.
Undeterred, Grendel maintained his smug grin. "Human drugs don't work on me. It has to be infused with blood to have any effect," he retorted. However, as he spoke, his self-assured expression faltered, revealing that his words were not what he intended to say.
"What's your name?" Miller raised an eyebrow, probing further. Grendel answered, but then Miller pressed him for any other names he went by. Within moments, Grendel found himself involuntarily listing off a series of names, his mouth moving without his consent.
Victoria couldn't tear her gaze away from the intense exchange between Miller and Grendel. Sensing his presence, Justin stepped closer, but she decided it would be best to postpone her questions about his absence until later. Miller continued to interrogate Grendel, prompting him to explain why he had claimed he would help C.R.O.W. Grendel's response hinted at a common enemy, further fueling the mounting tension in the room.
Victoria watched the tense scene unfold, her heart pounding in her chest as Grendel desperately defended himself. "I haven't given anyone here any reason to believe I'm not here to help," he argued, frustration etching into his voice. "We have a common enemy. There's no reason we shouldn't work together."
Justin's voice cut through the charged atmosphere, sharp and accusing. "Bullshit," he barked. "I knew I recognized you. I met you before. The first time I met you, you killed someone."
All eyes turned to Justin, then to Grendel, who maintained his enigmatic smile. "Did not," he retorted, vehemently denying Justin's claim.
Justin refused to back down, steadfast in his belief that Grendel had taken a life and was lying about it. The room brimmed with tension as the argument escalated, fueled by the truth-inducing effects of the drug coursing through Grendel's veins.
"I'm the one who physically can't lie. Go ahead, ask me anything you think I wouldn't want to answer. I have to tell the truth," Grendel challenged, his gaze shifting from Rex to Victoria, his smile unyielding. "Ask me what I would do to you if we had a night to ourselves."
Embarrassment flushed Victoria's cheeks as her mind replayed the intimate encounter she had shared with Grendel. The surge of emotions and the trust she had felt with him left her questioning whether it was merely the influence of a vampire's powers or if something deeper had been ignited.
Before anyone could respond, Rex lunged forward, his fist connecting with Grendel's mouth in a sucker punch. As Rex stood there, grappling with the repercussions of his impulsive action, his face reddened with shame. Miller took a step back, silently permitting Rex to continue his interrogation.
Closing in on Grendel, Rex grabbed the vampire's face between his thumb and forefinger, his voice dripping with menace as he issued a chilling ultimatum. "You're going to tell me what I want to know, or you'll never see Milo again."
Grendel's countenance fell, fear and despair darkening his eyes. "Where is he?" he cried out, desperation seeping into his voice. "Where's Milo? You didn't... He's not..." Grendel strained against his restraints, his gaze frantically scanning the room, his dear friend just out of sight.
An ache tugged at Victoria's heart as she witnessed Grendel's genuine concern for Milo. Vampires were not known for their capacity to care for others of their kind. It challenged the narrative she had always known--either Grendel was an exception or an exceptionally skilled liar.
"Milo," Grendel called out, his voice filled with worry. "Milo, are you okay?"
Rex released his grip, his next words laced with cruelty. "And what if he..." Rex hesitated, the thought making Victoria's stomach churn. "What if your friend couldn't make it with us tonight?"
Grendel's breathing deepened, panic welling up within him, momentarily masked by a facade of forced calmness. Flashes of horror and anger flickered across his face. "If anything happened to him, I'll... I'll..."
"You'll what?" Miller snarled, his voice dripping with disdain. "You're drugged and tied to a chair. Do you really think you're getting out of this alive? Either of you?"
Grendel's breaths grew more rapid, his panic escalating to the point of hyperventilation. "No, no, no," he repeated, his words a desperate mantra in the face of an uncertain fate.
Tension thickened in the room, wrapping around Victoria like a suffocating cloak. Confusion etched her features as she questioned Grendel's strange behavior. "Why is he acting like this?" she asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
Rex appeared just as perplexed, his confusion mirrored in his response. "I don't know. The truth serum usually brings out complete honesty. That's why vampires often admit to their lack of care for others of their kind," he replied, his gaze shifting between Victoria and Miller. "Could something have gone wrong?"
Meanwhile, Grendel's actions grew increasingly erratic, causing Victoria to fear that he would break free from his restraints effortlessly. Justin noticed this as well and took action. He forcefully dragged Grendel's chair, causing a horrendous screech as it scraped across the cement floor, prompting Victoria to cover her ears in discomfort. The chair came to a halt when Grendel was facing Milo, momentarily calming his anxiety until he failed to elicit a response from his friend.
"You're not getting any more answers until Milo is awake," Justin declared, stepping back from the two figures.
Miller and Rex retreated to a corner of the room, engaging in hushed conversation. Meanwhile, Grendel tried everything within his power to make Milo speak to him. As he finally seemed to regain some composure, he turned to Victoria, desperation evident in his voice. "He's going to be okay, right? Please tell me he's going to be okay."
The situation seemed like a twisted trick, but it was undeniably effective. Victoria found herself empathizing with Grendel, sensing a genuine love for Milo in his words and actions. For a fleeting moment, she contemplated helping them, finding a way to wake Milo and devise a plan for their escape. Just as she took a step forward, Justin's firm grip on her shoulder halted her.
"I don't trust him, and neither should you," Justin whispered, his eyes dark but filled with a sense of caution.
Returning from their private conversation, Miller and Rex approached the scene. Miller injected Milo's neck, and within seconds, Milo's head began to bob, his eyes slowly blinking as he surveyed the room, much like Grendel had done earlier. Grendel, in a frenzy, began to explain the situation to Milo. But he hardly seemed to notice what Grendel was saying.
Miller grasped the back of Milo's head, his voice laced with menace. "Why did you tell C.R.O.W. you wanted to help them?" he growled at the vampire, attempting to intimidate him.
Milo gazed back at Miller, seemingly unfazed and unbothered. His eyes lost focus as Miller repeated the question with an increasing ferocity.
Milo responded, but his words were incomprehensible to everyone present. Victoria wasn't fluent in many languages, but she could sense that it was unlike anything she had ever heard before. Despite her efforts, she couldn't place its origin.
At the same moment, Grendel burst into laughter. "Ask him whatever you want. He'll answer honestly, but you won't understand a damn thing he's saying. That language has been dead for thousands of years."
Rex snarled at Grendel before turning his attention back to Milo, persistently questioning him. Yet, regardless of the inquiry or the manner in which it was posed, Milo's calm and collected expression remained unchanged, and his words continued to puzzle everyone.
With each question asked, Grendel's laughter only grew louder, while Miller's face flushed with increasing frustration. "Fine. If we can't get anything useful from you, we might as well end you," Miller declared, striding over to a table littered with weapons. "Since you two can live without a heart, let's see how long you'll last without a head."
Grendel's laughter subsided, but Milo's expression remained resolute. When Miller returned, he placed a metal wire around Milo's throat. "Now, I'll ask you again, can you speak English, you fuck?" Miller challenged, his grip tightening, attempting to intimidate Milo further. Milo defiantly glanced up at him.
"Why would I do that?" Milo calmly replied, his tone unwavering. "If you kill me now, you'll never discover the information we possess." His gaze shifted to Rex, then to Grendel. "Am I correct in assuming the nature of these two?"
Grendel took a moment to comprehend the question, closing his eyes briefly as he scrutinized Miller and Rex before nodding slowly.
"Are you sure?" Milo pressed, facing Miller once again after Grendel's affirmative response. "It would be a shame if that knowledge resulted in the demise of your family. How would you live with that guilt?"
In response, Miller's free hand swung, connecting with Milo's face in a brutal punch. His other arm tightened the metal wire around Milo's throat. Astonishingly, Milo managed to maintain an air of indifference, even as he was being strangled.
Simultaneously, Justin's touch grazed Victoria's shoulder, and he whispered something into her ear. Her eyes widened with realization. Knowing that nothing short of revealing this information would save the two vampires before her, she raised her voice above Grendel's cries to capture Miller's attention. Gathering the two men in a corner, she relayed what Justin had shared with her.
Miller and Rex exchanged a meaningful glance before nodding in agreement. As they returned to the presence of the two vampires, Miller wore a sinister smile. "It's your lucky day, boys. It seems you'll live to see another day."

A woman, Susan, has dreams and visions of her new husband’s cruelty to her and of herself killing him in turn, guided and encouraged by his deceased ancestor Mircalla Karnstein. A bloody and disorienting film, the scenes that take place in reality and in the mind of Susan are sometimes impossible to tell apart. While there are some visual aspects of this film I really enjoy, I find its commentary on gender and sexuality uncomfortably dated. And while this entire movie is as spectacularly bloody as you would expect from the title (something I generally enjoy in a horror film), I personally found the ending in particular distasteful in its level of violence and cruelty towards the female characters. In the end I might still call this one worth watching though, if you’re prepared to grimace through large portions.

Sin Eater (part 1, chapter 3)
Joseph sat upon a moss-covered stone wall, his gaze fixed upon the tranquil pond as the sun began its descent, casting a crimson glow upon everything. The water shimmered as creatures leaped and submerged, playing within its depths. Beside him sat George, a lad of ample size and equal in years to Joseph. Richard, observing from a distance, maintained a subtle presence, neither concealing himself nor making his existence overt.
"Joseph, my friend, I have long pondered a question," George began, his countenance marked with deep concern. "What ails Richard? He seems peculiar, does he not? It is as if time holds no sway upon him."
Joseph, pausing as if lost in profound contemplation, responded, "Indeed, George, thou speakest true. Richard is of a different nature, which is precisely why I have cultivated his companionship." Richard, listening intently, felt a disconcerting undercurrent in Joseph's words--a sinister tone, hinting at a hidden meaning.
Yet, Richard trusted Joseph. For nearly four years, he had been a loyal and true friend. True, there had been occasions when Joseph placed him in perilous situations, but it was always with the purpose of strengthening him. Joseph ensured Richard's safety and provided him with the sustenance he required. Richard approached with caution, not to spy, but to avoid intruding upon Joseph and George.
Absently, Joseph plucked nearby stones and flung them into the lake, their fiery glow dancing upon the water's surface. With practiced skill, he skimmed smooth pebbles across the liquid expanse. George did the same.
"I fail to comprehend, Joseph. Why dost thou tolerate the company of that peculiar lad?" queried George. Seated together upon the wall, they continued their stone-skipping, unaware of Richard's approach.
"I have my reasons, fret not thyself over it," Joseph declared, springing to his feet as a stone elegantly sailed farther than the rest.
"Yet, he remains an oddity, dwelling among us for four long years, and his frame remains as meager as when he first arrived," George expressed with an air of bewilderment.
"Indeed, I concur, and 'tis precisely what renders it effortless to--" Joseph began, turning toward George. However, his gaze intercepted Richard's, prompting him to swiftly descend from the wall, landing a few paces before Richard. Hastily, Joseph enfolded Richard in an embrace. "Ah, there you are! We were just discussing you, my dear friend."
Richard's trepidation and unease gripped him as he hesitantly spoke, his voice trembling with vulnerability. "Pray tell, dost thou consider me a curiosity?"
"Place your trust in me, Richard. Never have I offered thee a cause to doubt my trustworthiness. Thou must persevere in placing thy trust in me," Joseph firmly asserted, his gaze fixed upon Richard, his words imbued with conviction. Seating Richard upon the wall beside him, Joseph positioned himself between Richard and George.
"We shall continue this discourse anon, do you agree?" Joseph whispered to George, uttering words intended for Richard to remain ignorant of. Thus, Richard followed suit in stone-skipping with the two boys, spending the rest of the afternoon in their company.
