Prostitutes and War Brides: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on Military Bases

What the hell is up with old men and their obsession with young, Asian women? Isabelle's encounter reflects attitudes among an older generation who have only viewed Asian Women through lenses of war, immigration, and prostitution.

The United State's overreach abroad has also contributed to the portrayal of Asian American and Pacific Islander women as inherently sexual. Military bases have a history of serving as a popular customer base for prostitution and it is a common phenomena to serve abroad and come back with a so called "War Bride". Military bases can be found in many Asian and Pacific Islander countries and often have long histories with those places because of colonization and/or imperialism (sometimes in forms of "intervention").

Labor- Page Act of 1875, Portrayal as Prostitutes

The Page Act of 1875 was an act that portrayed Chinese women as prostitutes and therefore banned almost all Chinese women from entering the United States. This act was based on the stereotype of all Asians being prostitutes or sexually promiscuous and used that to justify limits on women immigrating from China. This resulted in very few Chinese women being able to immigrate to the United States during this period. For the women who could immigrate to the United States, many of them had to result to domestic or reproductive labor, including prostitution. This is due to the fact that for WOC, labor is racialized. In order to support their families, WOC need to also pick up jobs, which tend to be low paying, exploitative domestic/reproductive jobs. Asian prostitutes were also villainized as they were seen as threats to the white, nuclear family because they were seen as the cause for STDS/STIS and against Christianity/Christian ideals.

Notably, the Page Act of 1875 produced a Chinese bachelor society, which contributed to the stereotypical portrayal of Asian men as simultaneously sexual predators (specifically towards white women) and as asexual men. This production of a bachelor society also fed into fears about interracial marriage and race impurity.

"Sex Among Allies" Katharine H. S Moon

"Sex Among Allies" by Katharine H.S Moon discusses the US military presence in South Korea and the prostitution that revolved around these bases. Moon discusses how essential the prostitution of South Korean women was to US- South Korea relations as prostitutions were deemed "patriotic" and "nesscary" but shunned from Korean and American society. Prostitutes were seen as important because both countries believed that prostitution contributed to the morale of GI's. It was also believed that by having a sector of prostitutes "normal" South Korean women would be shielded from American GI's.

History is filled with examples of women as war booty and “camp followers,” their bodies being used for service labor of various kinds, including sex. Contrary to common assumptions in the West, prostitution is not “part of Asian culture”

Historically, we can see that Asians and Pacific Islanders have been designated the role of prostitutes in American military history, which explains the continued portrayal of Asian and Pacific Islander women as inherently sexual as they have been commodified/frame as sexual products for the American military.

I relate to Shen Yuan way too much in this fandom because I too am reading smut for the mere hope of plot.

Like, the other day, I read a fic where Shen Yuan got to make one narrative change before transmigrating in and he chose to have Binghe be away from Shen Qingqiu. This ended up with Binghe being taught by Liu Qingge. The only thing this really changed was that he was like gayer and more repressed than his PIDW counterpart, with Shen Yuan being his wife/husband. YEAH SHEN YUAN GOT TRANSMIGRATED INTO ONE OF BINGHE'S WIVES AND AS HIS ONLY ONE IN THIS REALITY.

He was a plant demon with some omegaverse tossed in flavor but the most interesting bit was the bits of lore we got for the person he now was. The Omega warbride (I think that was the title) had a jilted former lover and a morally questionable father and I need to know everything about those dynamics, like yesterday.

Don't get it twisted, the smut was good, thank you for the smut BUT IT WAS A ONE SHOT AND IT LEFT ALL THESE IMPLICATIONS AND IM SUFFERING

Generations What If

[ Non-Canon ] An idea for an alternative to the climatic space battle in Generations

First the Duras sisters managed to aquire a rather beefier vessel than in the original film - something more on par with the Enterprise D

Either a Vorcha or a Romulan Warbrid - with the latter, the crew think they are dealing with Romulans and are surprised when hailed.

The two ships are too easily matched, so the Visor plan is used. It is only good for one shot before the Enterprise remodulates, but their first salvo of several torpedos takes out the shield generators on the starboard side of the star drive.

The Enterprise must now fight whilst guarding its starboard flank - this greatly limits its maneuvers

The Enterise takes too much damage to the warp core. A breach is imminent. Ejection is impossible - the area is a tangled mess from repeated impacts.

A collision course at warp is layed in - the destination: Duras ship.

However before the collision, the Enterprise does something the enemy ship cannot - it separates.

The saucer, propelled by a burst of the warp field, sails over the Duras ship. Moments later the stardrive slams into the enemy.

The Duras ship is destroyed by the stardrive explosion. With the saucer propelled by the warp burst, it is not hit by the shockwave, and instead continues out of the system.

The saucer is later picked up by the USS Redoubt and towed back to dry dock where a new stardrive will be built and the saucer refitted

The new stardrive could be a Galaxy class drive again, or it could always be something more "sovereign" for the next movie.

A crossover between G1 and TFP because of all the stupid shenanigans with some twists with the Dionysian Effect verse.

Not only do the G1 and TFP crews try to find their universe and confront some Uncomfortable truths in each other's worlds, but-

The thing is, TFP!Soundwave is deep in the mysticism of the Cult of Megatronus, so not only do the G1!cons need to constantly compute that there's a Soundwave with only one drone, no cassettes, an absolute beast of fighter, and a mute cryptid. He's fucking married to boot. In the equivalent of a Vegas-style, mate-napping of yore, and sealed-in-the-dirt and blessed by a fucking Prime kind of thing.

Even TFP!Megatron, who played Unicron's blood to get a huge edge over the Autobots, basically lets Soundwave handle that situation on his own because 1) he knows how committed Soundwave is, 2) Soundwave did bring back a Primal Artifact into their grasp and essentially ensured it couldn't be used against them with the current conditions, and 3) bonded with the Cybertronian equivalent of an extinct class of strange, powerful beings (aka Cybertronian magic-users), and 4) is deeply entertained by their hunting game and how Cyber!June sets things on fire and is impressed by her aim with energy projectiles.

Twenty three nights that Steve builds his tent and escorts him to the tent flap when the food and music have wound down, twenty three nights that Tony sits waiting alone until he falls asleep in a pile of furs.

Twenty three mornings he wakes to a present, flowers and berries and charcoal drawings and furs as soft as silk that he wraps around himself as they ride.

In twenty three long days, Tony learns what his name sounds like, in the harsh Northern tongue.

my thoughts: i forgot this fic? So it was fun to dive back into the worldbuilding and Tony’s confusion paired with Steve taking care of him.

Entering the common room, Poe watched Hux grab two slices of stale bread and cheese each and proceed to eat them in the company of Rose Tico.

Poe: "Wait, what, did I get this right? The "thing" Hugs would miss is ROSE?!"

Phasma: "'fraid so. They were thick as thieves from the moment they met.”

Poe: And yet he didn’t ask Rose to play his bride when he got forced to marry to claim his inheritance. I can’t tell whether the implication here is worrying or heartwarming.

In about 10ish years or so I wanna do a remake of Miss Saigon but for Afghanistan. Make it nearly beat for beat the same shit with the warbride and everything, but make it dry and dusty. Barely more than a pallete swap. Set up a photo area out front depicting a tarmac with people falling from the landing gear at top of frame. Theater is even more out of touch now than then, so I bet we could really make it work if we just throw in some 2016 era low effort Trump jokes.

That was Agamemnon who did that. And then he refused to give her up until Achilles was forced to give him his own warbride, who was a totally separate character, to replace her, leading to Achilles sulking in his tent for most of the book until his boyfriend died. How can you get that mixed up? Achilles did a lot of fucked up things, and gave Apollo plenty reasons to hold a grudge, but he didn't do that.
