My father, Susumu Yamashita, was a junior executive at the San Francisco branch of Mitsubishi trading company before the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. On April 30, 1942, he was involved in the mass forced removal of the Japanese American community from Berkeley to Tanforan detention center, a former race track in San Bruno, with my mother, Kiyoko Yamashita, and my 18 month-old sister Kimiko. My family was housed in a horse-stall “apartment” from May to September.  When my family was transported to the Topaz, Utah incarceration camp in September 1942, my father was assigned to be the liaison to the Issei (first-generation) residents due to his Japanese-language proficiency, which was gained from his 11 years of education in Tokyo between 1911–1922. This is why he was labeled as a “Kibei,” American born but educated in Japan.  After working 14 months in Community Welfare, providing the camp’s social services, my father was ready for a change. My Cal Berkeley/Harvard Business School-alumnus, ex-businessman father asked to be transferred to the agricultural division to work as a ranch hand. He achieved personal satisfaction from working outdoors as a Kibei cowboy, tanned and healthy, herding cattle astride his favorite horse, Red. At age 39, he was undoubtedly one of the oldest “cowboys” amongst the riders at the Topaz cattle ranch. In 1951 he rejoined Mitsubishi and was charged with establishing its New York headquarters as the new Mitsubishi International Corporation. After Topaz, my father never rode a horse again.

Screeches to a halt in a cloud of dust HELLO I'M LATE I'M SORRY. The first Saturday of a fresh month is tomorrow, which means it's time for another community art party hosted by [VS] Verdant Shield! Last week I ran a(n also late) poll and the winner was Rata Sum, a place we haven't been since the very first small test party all the way back in January!

For those who haven't heard of them before, art parties are an idea carried over from Final Fantasy XIV - big (or small!) get-togethers for artists/writers/creatives of all kinds to hang out, chat, and create together! Put together your most eye-catching look, find someone who inspires you, and get to work! Afterwards, everyone uses the party-specific tag (ours is #VSArtParty) to share their creations so others can see and spread the love around via reblogs! The tl;dr I always say for these is this: the 'goal' of an art party isn't to be drawn, but to draw others, and share with the community!

Party details are in the image above, but I'll toss an expanded text version under the cut with things like /squadjoin information!

Location Details:

A guildmate suggested we have the party down by the docks this time so we could have a boat party, and I totally agree! I may have put Antidawn Anchorage as the primary land point, but if you have a skiff feel free to take to the water as well! Worth noting that in order to interact with others' skiffs you must be in the same party or squad, and you do not need to have a skiff of your own to interact with a party/squad member's one!

Now, for those not familiar with Rata Sum, here's a quick image of the spot in question, which can be reached by taking the Antidawn Anchorage or Dawnside Quay asura gates nearby the Magicat Court (Antidawn) and Metrical Court (Dawnside) Waypoints:

Time & Squad Details:

As always, the party will consist of two separate events, with an hour break in between (though technically people jump from one to the other immediately anyway so the NA one tends to 'start' earlier than the scheduled time).

The first party will be on EU servers and begin at 9pm Central European Summer Time (aka 3pm Eastern Daylight Time or 5 hours before in-game reset). I’ll be hosting on my EU alt account, so to join either /squadjoin or whisper Toxicologist Mosse for an invite.

The second party will be on NA servers and begin at 7pm Eastern Daylight Time (aka 1am Central European Summer Time or 1 hour before in-game reset). This one I’ll be hosting on my main account, so to join either /squadjoin or whisper Teekzi for an invite.

IMPORTANT NOTE (mostly for the NA party): If you join and the squad is at or above 45 members, please just taxi into the right map and then hop out of squad to allow others to do the same! Essentially all conversation now happens in say chat so you won’t miss out on anything by being outside of squad!

My apologies for the extremely short notice on this one everyone, I've been slapped with a bunch of IRL stuff (it's nothing bad, don't worry!) that's kept me out of the game for longer than I'd hoped. With all the exciting game news buzzing around lately though, I might just have to set aside some proper time to let myself get invested in this again, we'll see! Y'know, you can complain all you want about Obi-Wan taking in Anakin so quickly after Qui-Gon's death and the council allowing it but it all makes sense if you consider the next few facts

After a millennia of being gone, there is Credible Proof that the Sith have returned AND are able to take down a Jedi Master

Anakin is very strong in the force and Will Be a target to the Sith

So who is the best option to protect Anakin? Obi-Wan "First guy to kill a Sith in a Millennium" Kenobi

And this is not even considering the fact that the first few years of Anakin's Padawanship might have been a catch up on everything and although he was officially a "Padawan", he was going to and attending Youngling classes

just answered an ask about jace and sara snow but had to delete a whole tangent about jace and queen alysanne. so here are some scattered thoughts with no real purpose

jace's journey to winterfell serves several purposes. one of them is the obvious one of gathering allies for rhaenyra's cause, convincing the lords and garnering promises of support; and the other one is to set winterfell and the north as a literal and metaphorical turning point. what do i mean by this? well, the only other targaryen excursion of note to the north was queen alysanne's visit to winterfell and the wall where most importantly, she charmed the starks and something strange happened with her dragon silverwing. and that's exactly what happened to jace! he charmed the starks and apparently, vermax, thought to be a male, laid eggs in the crypts of winterfell (and he's visiting the wall on the show?!? it's like they are reading my mind too). to me, it's obvious grrm is setting up part of the magical plot through these targaryen incursions for when it's time to fight the others but i'm not going to get into the present timeline.

most importantly, the pact of ice and fire was made. at the barebones, an agreement between the starks and targaryens. alysanne convinced a reluctant alaric stark to give up the new gift to the night's watch, while jace convinced cregan stark to lead his men south to fight for rhaenyra. it's interesting to think both jace and alysanne managed to convince two lord starks who were known to be headstrong and to become friendly with stark daughters too. their direct actions managing to make a lasting impact on the north when no other targaryen royal had managed to do until aerys killed both the current lord and heir.

and to me, it's much more interesting to think about what kind of king or prince jace would've been in times of peace. i would like to think he might go along with the same methods as alysanne. i'm really excited to see how the show weaves what we know from both the past and the future timeline of the north/the long night/tsoiaf with jace's only visit to winterfell.

I'm rapidly catching up on the past 200 years of the Fort Meigs area. Even more so than Captain Marryat in his 1830s travelogue A Diary In America, I'm surprised at how much things have changed since 1814.

In scenario A (year 1810), you can see the corduroy road over the swampy lowland, soon to be transporting men in cute Napoleonic-style military uniforms and supplies to Fort Meigs. The world is in balance, as represented by the ghost sharks in Lake Erie.

In scenario B (year 2010), the wetlands have been drained and replaced with corn, causing a great evil to manifest in the area. Excessive corn has driven away the ghost sharks and replaced them with green slime. And there's a Toledo (not the one in Spain).

In scenario C (year 2050), successful ecological restoration of the landscape has placed a barrier of wetlands between the corn and bodies of water and curbs the malign influence of Toledo. Ghost sharks have returned to Lake Erie, and the world is in greater harmony (as shown by the lack of green slime).

(It's a real academic journal article, btw.)
