Art of War (10)
A Martial Song by Nikita Bogoslovsky, Vladimir Agatov, and Mark Bernes
Тёмная ночь (Dark Is the Night)
youtube
Lyrics
English
Dark night, only bullets are whistling in the steppe,
Only the wind is wailing through the telephone wires, stars are faintly flickering ...
In the dark night, my love, I know you are not sleeping,
And, near a child's crib, you secretly wipe away a tear.
How I love the depths of your gentle eyes,
How I long to press my lips to them!
This dark night separates us, my love,
And the dark, troubled steppe has come to lie between us.
I have faith in you, in you, my sweetheart.
That faith has shielded me from bullets in this dark night ...
I am glad, I am calm in deadly battle:
I know you will meet me with love, no matter what happens.
Death is not terrible, we've met with it more than once in the steppe ...
And here it looms over me once again,
You await my return, sitting sleepless near a cradle,
And so I know that nothing will happen to me!
Context
Тёмная ночь (Performed 1943) - Mark Bernes (1911-1969), Nikita Bogoslovsky (1913-2004), and Vladimir Agatov (1919-1949) [Russia]
Originally the solemn song was written by Nikita Bogoslovsky, a composer, and Vladimir Agatov , a poet. Although Mark Bernes was not the first to record and perform the song, he is widely credited with popularizing it and giving the martial song a voice. He performed the song in the movie Two Soldiers, where he played a soldier missing his wife and child.
The song became heavily associated with Eastern front of WWII between the Soviet people and Nazis. Authorities attempted to shun and ostracize the song for it's negative themes, claiming it was Philistine and would dishearten the Soviet people. Philistine was the idea of a person or thing hostile to art and culture from a philosophical stand point, however people who went around claiming others were philistine were more hostile than any money hungry artist.

so I know Six Hundred Strike has us all in a chokehold, but can we talk about how Dangerous had "six hundred deaths under my command, cause I had only one goal in mind" and then dead silence for three seconds

‘‘The Sky Is a Landfill’’ is one of Jeff Buckley`s most political songs. It talks about how ‘‘our nation bends to kiss the hag’’ and how the system is designed to silence the minds of those who think critically and move with grace. Plus it calls out Bill Clinton.
Buckley empowers the listener and urges to reject the status quo, as he ends the song declaring that he has ‘‘no fear of this machine!’’ Buckley got inspiration from American journalist Al Giordano`s essay ‘‘The Medium Is the Middleman’’. Giordano explains that:
‘‘Jeff had read “The Medium Is the Middleman,” and we discussed it at length. He applied my critique of the media industry to the music industry, and we had the exact same conclusions. Sony, in the spring of 1997, was giving him real problems over whether he could choose his own producer. He wanted Tom Verlaine, the virtuoso guitarist, to produce his album, and Sony wanted to impose another editor — um, I mean producer. So we had a common story. And we also had big plans for how to explode this idea upon the public psyche. Jeff turned my book into a song, titled “The Sky Is a Landfill.” The concept of the song was that the media turned the airwaves into a garbage dump. Arcade called it his “magnum opus’’(Kennedy,1997)

Bad Lip Reading - Seagulls! (Stop It Now) 2016
Bad Lip Reading is a YouTube channel created and run by an anonymous producer from Texas who intentionally lip-reads video clips poorly for comedic effect. Some of the channel's original songs are available on Spotify and Apple Music.
In December 2015, Bad Lip Reading simultaneously released three new videos, one for each of the three films in the original Star Wars trilogy. These videos used guest voices for the first time, featuring Jack Black as Darth Vader, Maya Rudolph as Princess Leia, and Bill Hader in multiple roles. The Empire Strikes Back BLR video featured a scene of Yoda singing to Luke Skywalker about the dangers posed by vicious seagulls if one dares to go to the beach. BLR later expanded this scene into a full-length stand-alone song called "Seagulls! (Stop It Now)", which was released in November 2016, and eventually hitting #1 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart.
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, publicly praised "Seagulls!" (and Bad Lip Reading in general) while speaking at Star Wars Celebration in 2017: "I love them, and I showed Carrie [Fisher] the Yoda one… we were dying. She loved it. I retweeted it… and [BLR] contacted me and said ‘Do you want to do Bad Lip Reading?’ And I said, ‘I'd love to…’”. Hamill and Bad Lip Reading collaborated on Bad Lip Reading's version of The Force Awakens, with Hamill providing the voice of Han Solo. The Star Wars Trilogy Bad Lip Reading videos led to a second musical number, "Bushes of Love", which hit #2 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart.
May the 4th be with 71,6% of you!
