You know what would be interesting?
JC never lost his golden Core.
And Wei Wuxian did not lose his.
But he still gets dropped into the Burial Mounds. And like I dunno how, but he comes out of there having mastered the new form of cultivation.
Jiang Cheng acts like a dick that's par for cannon. And this Wei Wuxian who has survived the burial Mounds with his golden core intact has no time for his drama.
He definitely confesses to Lan Wangji o ce he is out of the burial mounds.
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji in the Sunshot campain would be brilliant. Cultivating and * *wink wink nudge nudge* * dual cultivating.
JC is seething with jelousy. He has everything. The gentry name, the money and sect leadership but the whole world is only speaking about Wei Wuxian and his like awesome cultivation. Both the sword style and with his flute.
Wen Qing and Wen Ning- Wen Ning convinces his sister to join the war. Wen Ning wants to be on Wei Wuxian's side.
What would JC throw a tantrum over if he doesn't have anything to throw a tantrum over??
Like for example he blames Wei Wuxian for Lotus Pier burning. Obviously it's not his mistake. But one day he is yelling at Wei Wuxian about it and sect leader someone maybe XiChen, maybe Sect leader Nie. Whoever. Comes and like defends Wei Wuxian.
What would he do then faced with the facts? Cling all the more to his warped world view? Or apologize?
It will be interesting to see.
You don't have to take this prompt if it's too messy or whatever. I love you and your writing.
Also, thank you for choosing to write my previous prompt.
XOXO.
(this is a little similar to trapped and patient but also quite different. Hope you like it! The format is a bit different because this is a lot of time to cover in a short prompt)
When he stumbles out of the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian is stunned. He can't believe he made it, that he was able to survive it, without his sword.
Wei Wuxian walks forward shakily, one unsteady step at a time, putting distance between him and that wretched place.
He feels weak, drained, devastated in small ways.
But he is free.
---
Yiling offers shelter in unexpected ways. He's able to hide in a temple to recover. His condition is wretched enough that he's mistaken for a beggar. A few people take pity on him and offer fruits and buns.
It takes him a week.
That's all it takes for him to recover.
Wei Wuxian washes all traces of Burial Mounds off him, soaks in icy river water for hours on end until he feels purified and reforged.
Now, he's ready for revenge.
---
Wei Wuxian has only tried his cultivation method on the dead. He has used it to repel the fierce corpses, fierce ghosts, and spirits soaked in resentment.
When he tests the method on the Wens, it proves to be even more effective. They scramble like mindless beasts, driven by fear and confusion. The sounds of his Dizi pierce the air and induce madness.
He watches from a distance, indifferent as the Wens turn on each other, swinging their swords, shouting at phantoms, all sense and intellect gone.
He turns away.
---
Jiang Cheng's arms wrap around him and the fog around his mind starts to slowly recede. He stands stiffly, blinking a little before looking beyond his martial brother.
Lan Zhan is there, staring at him with wide eyes. There's so much open concern on his usually stoic face that Wei Wuxian wants to turn away.
"Wei Ying,"
It is only then, under the power of that golden gaze, that his fugue state dissipates. He sees Lan Zhan step forward, almost reaching out only to pull back at the last moment.
Jiang Cheng pushes him away and punches his shoulder, "Where have you been? How dare you abandon us and just frolic off somewhere?"
Wei Wuxian swalllows with difficulty and answers their questions with his habitual dismissive charm.
But that honest expression of open concern on Lan Zhan's beautiful face doesn't leave.
He meets those golden eyes and feels something shift within him.
Shaking his head, he dismisses the feeling. There's no time for sentimental reunions. He turns his attention towards Wen Chao, unsheathes his sword, and kills him in one clean strike.
There. Done.
---
The war is already in full swing by the time he joins it. His martial brother and Lan Zhan are quick to take him to Qinghe, not even letting him ride his own sword.
"Wei-gongzi, I'm happy to see you safe," Lan Xichen greets, running a discreet eye over him. The older Lan brother's concern is well hidden but Wei Wuxian senses it nevertheless.
The man looks like he's just about ready to banish him to the healing halls.
He opens his mouth to reassure Lan Xichen but Nie Mingjue intervenes, slapping his back solidly, "I hear you're responsible for the devastation at Yiling. Good work!"
Wei Wuxian smiles brightly, hoping to banish that increasingly familiar look from Lan Zhan's face. "Thank you, Nie-zongzhu." He smiles up at the man, "I can give you a full report of what happened if you wish it."
The Chifeng-zun's expression shifts into one of approval and he nods, "I do wish it."
"I would like to know as well, if you don't mind," Lan Xichen says and Nie Mingjue nods before he glances at Lan Zhan.
He chuckles, "Lan er-gonzi can join us as well."
---
Wei Wuxian doesn't realize he's been spending more time with the Lan brothers and Nie Mingjue until Jiang Cheng angrily points it out.
"You're too good for us, are you?" He demands, "Abandoning us in favor of your new friends! Even in the battlefield, you and Lan Wangji are inseparable! Have some shame! How dare you abandon your responsibilities and mess around with that man?"
"a-Cheng," Shijie reprimands gently but her voice is weak.
"Aiya, Jiang Cheng, who keeps track of such things amidst a war? They're all our allies. It's not like I have abandoned everyone." He still trains with the Jiang disciples and leads them in battle after all.
"Wei Wuxian!"
"Jiang Cheng," His voice makes his irritation clear, "Is this really the right time to worry about such trivial matters? Who cares about appearances during war? Are were not all one when on the battlefield?" He asks, narrowing his eyes on the furious Jiang, "We don't know whether we'll live or die when we ride out and you're concerned about who fights alongside me? Just who are you speaking of?"
"Who I am speaking of?" Jiang Cheng snaps in return, "Your obsession with that man is unseemly and reflects poorly on the sect! You know it and yet you carry on shamelessly-"
"My obsession?" He demands, "Just what are you trying to imply, Jiang Cheng? You're going to be a brat just because Lan Zhan happens to be the only one able to keep up with me?" It is no secret that his three month stint sharpened his cultivation in ways people find hard to fathom. He didnât just develop a new cultivation method, he grew. Surviving the Burial Mounds is a feet beyond the skill and endurance of most cultivators.Â
Wei Wuxian has earned his already formidable reputation.
Jiang Cheng reels back at the reminder, his face twisting with rage.
Never let it be said that Wei Wuxian takes things lying down. He has spent a lifetime appeasing Jiang Cheng and dealing with his insecurities.
He no longer has the patience.
---
He reaches out instinctively, pulling Lan Zhan out of a blade's path, spinning around to block the strike with his bare arm.
His thick leather brace manages to minimize the damage and he doesn't lose his arm but it is a near thing.
With a hiss, he crowds against Lan Zhan and brings Suibian down in a sharp slash, cutting the Wen before him from left shoulder to right hip.
"Reckless." Lan Zhan says later as he carefully stitches the cut.
"I couldn't let you get hurt." Wei Wuxian says softly, peering down at the kneeling figure before him. He has seen Lan Zhan in various states of indignity, covered in blood, robes soaked in the disgusting sludge of a war-torn field.
Nothing diminishes his beauty.
Wei Wuxian's heart races, his head spinning as he smells the scent of sandalwood. He swallows as Lan Zhan shifts closer, carefully snipping the excess thread and studying his neat stitches.
This close, he feels overwhelmed and realization dawns.
"I love you," He breathes, stunned.
He loves Lan Zhan. The knowledge strikes him now, suddenly, without warning. "How did I not know?" Wei Wuxian feels strangely dazed. How could he not know? It is so obvious to him, his constant need for Lan Zhan's attention, "I hate it when you ignore me." The feeling of those snapping golden eyes on him when he finally manages to gain Lan Zhan's attention, "It's thrilling when you don't."
He has never met anyone more beautiful, "I find you better looking than any maiden." Lan Zhan's proximity now makes him feel-, "Breathless," He says, "When I'm close to you I feel- how did I miss-"
Lan Zhan grip is like vice around his wrist.
Wei Wuxian stops, going pale as he realizes how brazenly he had just confessed love to a man. If Jiang Cheng were here, he'd definitely gut him with Sandu, "Lan Zhan, I-"
Lan Zhan surges forward, eyes blazing and expression dark.
Warm lips slide over his and his mind goes silent.
He doesn't think a single thought that night.
---
War doesn't wait for anyone and Wei Wuxian doesn't say anything in protest when Lan Zhan pulls away from him. He watches with heavy eyes as Lan Zhan shrugs on his discarded outer robes and glances at him.
"Is your body alright?" He asks and Wei Wuxian feels a blush crawl up his neck.
âNo! Of course it isnât,â He complains even though his body is buzzing with lingering pleasure. He pouts up at Lan Zhan, who studies him with careful golden eyes, âReally, going on and on, taking your pleasure without any care for my virgin body.â Lan Zhanâs ears are delightfully red, âWho knew er-gege could be so bold?â
âWei Ying,â Lan Zhanâs expression is flat but his voice carries a hint of a waver. Wei Wuxian just grins in response, âBe serious.â
In all honesty, his body is already back to its regular state of being. His Golden Core is still spinning furiously and the lingering energy from Dual Cultivation has healed any aches and pains he might have.Â
âFine,â He says in a petulant tune, inwardly delighted that Lan Zhan is now his, âBut er-gege must kiss me to make me feel better.â
Lan Zhan doesnât hesitate, leaning over him and gently tipping his chin up for the demanded kiss.Â
Wei Wuxian sighs, sinking into it as a curtain of silken black hair forms a private cocoon around him.Â
---
The war ends but Wei Wuxianâs problems donât end with it. Three issues stand before him; helping the Wen remnants, helping rebuild YunmengJiang, and figuring out how to marry Lan Zhan.Â
One obstacle stands in the way of two of these three goals. Jiang Cheng absolutely refuses to lift a finger to help the Wen remnants, even though Wen Qingâs assistance helped them win the war. Jin Guangyao may have killed Wen Ruohan but Wen Qing prevented thousands of casualties.
Wen Ning was also responsible for rescuing Jiang Cheng from the Wen capture before he lost his Golden Core. It was fortunate that Wen Zhuliu had been called to visit Wen Ruohan and Wen Chao had to wait to enact that punishment.Â
Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian managed to steal Jiang Cheng away just hours before Wen Zhuliu returned.
And yet, Jiang Cheng chooses to side with the Jins on the matter instead of listening to Lan Xichen or Nie Mingjue. Wei Wuxian knows it is partly because their sister is marrying into the Jin clan and they canât afford to make things difficult for her, but still.
Jin Zixuan will obviously protect shijie. Thereâs no need to be so cautious, especially if three out of four sects oppose imposing any sort of punishment on innocent people.Â
On a personal front, Jiang Chengâs disapproval of his relationship with Lan Zhan is blatant.
Jiang Cheng canât really stop Wei Wuxian from marrying whoever he wishes. He doensât need the sect leaderâs permission as heâs not really the member of the family. But his shidi is making things difficult with his sneering disapproval and contemptuous comments in public. Â
He has already alienated Lan Xichen completely by calling Lan Zhanâs honor in question (boy did he earn the punch Wei Wuxian had leveled at him - sect leader or no). Nie Mingjue will never side with some upstart over Lan Xichen.Â
Lan Zhan himself doesnât care. He has never liked Jiang Cheng and he never will. He only retaliates when Jiang Cheng tries to attack Wei Wuxian.Â
His protective er-gege as no tolerance for anyone trying to harm him.
Which is what, ultimately, breaks Wei Wuxianâs ties with YunmengJiang.Â
The confrontation is embarrassingly public. He doesnât mind Lan Xichen or Nie Mingjue being present but feels upset about Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao being there as well.Â
âTwin Prides of Yungmeng, isnât that what you promised me?â Jiang Cheng demands, âWhere will your pride be if you break all of your promises and get into...â He waves his hand at Lan Zhan in disgust, âIs this how you intend to repay us? My father raised you to be the Head Disciple of the Jiang Sect and you would rather be some sort of deviant?â
âJiang Cheng-â
âAnd you would side with the Wen dogs too! Was this always your intention? Did you always want to bring down my sect and support its enemies?âÂ
âThe Wen remnants have helped us. Theyâre not our enemies.â
âTheyâre not our enemies now,â Jin Guanyao interjects calmly, his voice soothing and patient, âBut surely you see that it may not remain so? We cannot risk another war.â
âTheyâre barely a few hundred people and we have already taken most of their resources. Theyâll live as poor peasants. How can they be a threat to us?â Wei Wuxian asks.Â
âYouâre indeed naĂŻve, Wei-gongzi,â Jin Guangshan says in a gentle, placating tone, âPerhaps your fondness for Wen-guniang is making you turn a blind eye. Beautiful women have a tendency to do that.â He chuckles indulgently.
The sly implication in his tone isnât lost on anyone. Lan Zhanâs expression turns frosty and Wei Wuxian feels a surge of fury strong enough to make his blood boil. There are so many things wrong with that statement that Wei Wuxian, for once, is rendered speechless.
âYou question the honor of Wei Wuxian of all people?â Nie Mingjue demands, taking a step forward, âI have stayed silent because Jiang Sect business isnât my business but I will not have you slander and belittle a proven warrior in my presence!â
âIndeed,â Lan Xichen says calmly but thereâs no mistaking the sharp look in his eyes. Lan Xichen rarely reacts to provocations or interferes in sect matters that donât concern him. But heâs not going to let anyone upset his younger brother carelessly, âThe matter of the Wens is easy to resolve. Let us give them a small piece of land, let them set up a village, and forbid cultivation among them.â
âEr-ge,â Jin Guangyao begins but Lan Zhan is out of patience.Â
He steps back and bows to all assembled before placing a hand on Wei Wuxianâs back, âWei Ying will choose his own path. Wens will remain free. Wei Ying and I will marry.â He meets Jiang Chengâs furious gaze, âJiang-zongzhu must decide whether his brotherâs happiness matters to him.â
Wei Wuxian winces.Â
âMy brotherâs happiness?â Jiang Cheng demands, âAll everyone has ever cared about is his happiness! What about me? What about our Sect? A sect he nearly destroyed because of his loyalty towards you.â Jiang Cheng looks at him, âDid you forget my mother? My father? How do you intend to repay the enormous debt you carry, Wei Wuxian?â
Wei Wuxian stares back at him, âWhat is my repayment, Jiang Cheng?â He asks softly, âWhat will it take for you to consider that debt repaid?â It has been over five years since the fall of Lotus Pier. Wei Wuxian has bled and slogged through war to restore that place to its former glory. He has kept Jiang Cheng safe, helped renegotiate shijieâs marriage, and used his name to draw skilled cultivators to YungmengJiang.Â
What more can he give?Â
âLoyalty.â He stills, âYou devote your life to YungmengJiang and nothing else.â
Lan Xichen makes a faint, alarmed noise while Nie Mingjue huffs in disapproval.Â
Wei Wuxian takes a deep breath, feeling Lan Zhanâs fingers flex on his back. He levels a flat look at Jiang Cheng and thinks on the matter of debts. He thinks about Madam Yuâs refusal to bend, of Jiang-zongzhuâs passivity and lack of planning. He thinks about the Wenâs unprovoked attack on Cloud Recesses and the inevitability of war.Â
He thinks of his Lan Zhan and shijieâs Jin Zixuan, without swords and facing an armed group of Wens under Wen Chaoâs orders.Â
He thinks of love. Of what it means to be truly, unconditionally loved.Â
No sorrys and no thank yous. No debt owed for simply being a part of someoneâs life.Â
He thinks of acceptance that comes with an older brotherâs amused smile. He thinks of an uncleâs gruff admonishment to behave followed by a stiff reminder to eat, youâre skin and bones already.Â
He takes a deep breath and decides.Â
âNo.â

Telltale Talent
Pairing: Dream / Clay x gn!reader
Summary:Â [Dream SMP!AU] When Dream tries to teach you how to spar, he learns that youâre more than what meets the eye.
Word Count:Â 2.1k
A/N: this was requested by an anon who wanted a fun sparring practice with a surprise! hereâs to the first fic of 2021, and i hope you enjoy <3
Clay stared down at the map on his desk, his fingers curling tighter around the quill in his hands. A mess of scribbles and circles gazed back up at him as he made another mark. He bit back the sigh that threatened to escape his throat, his brow twitching.
You were doing it, again.
He could feel your eyes on him from the other side of the room, practically boring a hole through his skull. He clenched his jaw, chewing on his lip as he tried to focus his attention on the map lying before him. If you were going to do what he thought you were going tâ
At that exact moment, you opened your mouth, but he spoke before you could.
âNo.â
Almost immediately, a whine flew from your lips, and you thrashed your legs in annoyance. âWhat?! Why not?â You frowned, determination etched into your features. âItâll be a good experience!â
This time, he actually did sigh, lifting his head to look at you dead on, balancing his quill between his fingers. âFor one, itâs not like youâre not going to go into battle, anyway.â
Your frown deepened, a line forming between your brows as you shot him a longing look. âThat doesnât mean you still canât teach me how to spar.â
He pursed his lips, his tongue poking at the inside of his cheek. âThereâs no need to.â
For a few seconds, you simply stared at one another, your eyes swimming with resolve as he grimaced. Then your face lit up, and you shot your arm into the air, making him jump.Â
âSelf-defence!â you shouted, your entire body practically glowing with hope. âIf you teach me how to spar, then I could use it for self-defence purposes.â Before he could open his mouth to retort, you cut him off with a cold look. âClay, you canât tell me that thereâs no chance that I wonât ever have to defend myselfâyou just canât.â
Clay blinked at you, glowering. You werenât wrong, per se. He didnât want to acknowledge it, but there was still a very real possibility that at any point, you could be in danger, regardless of whether or not you were on the battlefield. It wasnât that he didnât think you were capable of keeping yourself safe, but teaching you how to fight would mean having to admit that there may come a time where he couldnât be there for you.
The mere thought left a bitter taste in his mouth.
He stared at you for a long moment, taking in the sight of your pleading face and clenched hands, your eyes desperately searching his. Then, he sighed once more, setting his quill down in its holder. âFine.â
You let out a delighted squeal, springing to your feet before bounding over to his desk. Bending over, you pressed a quick peck to his cheek. His heart skipped a loving beat in his chest, and his cheeks flushed pink.
âThank you, thank you, thank you, Clay!â you cried, flashing him a bright grin as you pulled back. Your eyes curved into crescent moons as you giggled with glee. âYou wonât regret this, I promise!â
He rested his head on his hand as he watched you cheer to yourself, pumping your air in a successful dance. A small smile flitted across his face, his emerald eyes crinkling at the corners as his map lay forgotten on the desk.
Oh, who was he kidding? You were far too cute to say no to, even if he wanted to.
âSo, whatâs first?â
He hummed, tucking a hand under his chin. Above you, the midday sun beat down on you both, the clouds watching with eager eyes as Clay paced around the clearing.
He was lucky to have found a spot within the forest that was both open and had plenty of soft grass. This way, youâd have a proper spot to practice while also having some semblance of cushioning beneath you in case you fell. As much as he wanted to simulate a real fight scenario for you, he didnât want you to actually get injured. He could hardly manage to keep his cool when you got a simple scrape on your fingerâthere was no way heâd remain calm if you got hurt in a fight, practice or not.
His steps suddenly came to a halt, and he turned on his heel to look at you with a thoughtful glance. âBefore we even properly start practicing,â he began, raising two fingers, âthere are two things you should know and remember.â
Your eyebrows knit together as you let out a small whine, your shoulders sinking at your side. âAw, is this a lecture?â You frowned. âI just want to skip to the fun part, already.â
Clay rolled his eyes as shook his head, but you didnât miss the tiny smile on his lips as he wagged his fingers at you. âAh, ah, ah. Iâm the teacher here, so you better pay attention.â
You shot him a sour look, then quietly grumbled, âWell, youâre not a very fun teacher.â
He scowled at that, placing a hand on his hip. âWeâre getting there!â His gaze softened, and his tone grew gentle as he offered, âLetâs just do this first, okay? I promise Iâll keep it short, and you will get to try a real spar, today.â
Your frown was slowly replaced by a smile, and you sent him a keen look, shifting forward onto your toes. âOkay.â
He grinned, taking a few steps back from you until he was standing on the opposite side of the clearing. âGood. First,â he said, pointing his two fingers at his eyes then to yours, ânever take your eyes off your enemy.â He cocked his head as he lowered his arm. âIt may seem obvious to you, but youâd be surprised by how often people forget in the heat of the moment.â
Your gaze was serious when you nodded, and he was almost taken aback by how quickly your demeanour had changed. âI can do that.â
He blinked for a second, then sent you another encouraging smile. âPerfect. Second,â he carried on, pointing downward, âremember that your feet exist.â
âOkayâwait.â You froze, your eyebrows furrowing together as confusion flickered across your face. âWhat?â
He chuckled at your confused expression, dropping his arm. âI know it sounds dumb, but itâs true! You see,â he explained, tapping a finger against his temple, âthe human brain is kind of dumb, and a lot of the time when it comes to fights, a personâs first instinct is to focus on their enemyâs hands and immobilize them.â He raised his hand toward you, curling it into a tight fist. âAfter all, they are pretty effective weapons. But your feet can be just as, if not more, powerful.â His gaze darted back to yours. âDo you follow?â
Slowly, you nodded, your eyes staring directly at his knuckles. âIn the same way,â he continued, âitâs also good to remember that your elbows and knees are two of the strongest parts of your body.â He raised one hand, the other reaching over to tap his elbow. âDonât be afraid to use them, because they can be especially useful.â
Your lips parted as you bobbed your head. He could practically see the gears churning in your head, and he almost wanted to coo at how focused you looked. âFeet, elbows, knees,â your murmured quietly to yourself, huffing. âGot it.â
He dropped his arm, his lips quirking. âAwesome.â He turned slightly to the side, shifting his weight onto his back foot. âNow that the so-called boring part is done, do you just want to give it a first go and try a practice fight? First person to knock the other person over wins.â
Your eyes lit up, and for a split second, Clay could have sworn he saw something dark flicker through your gaze. But it was gone as soon as it had appeared, and he was soon blinded by your dazzling grin. âSure!â
His expression mirrored yours as he brought his arms up in front of him, his hands forming fists. In front of him, your eyes quickly scanned him up and down, and you slowly moved to copy his stance. He felt a tinge of satisfaction shoot through him. You were a fast learner.
âIâm ready when you are,â he called, cracking his neck with a grunt.
Your eyes narrowed, your tongue darting out to wet your lips, and for a moment, all was still.
Then, in a flash, you were charging toward him, stopping only just in front of him to throw your fist at his skull. He smiled at your earnest effort, quickly twisting to the side. You nearly toppled forward when your fist met empty air, and he reveled in your widening eyes. A split second later, you leapt back, swinging your left leg up and into his side. But just before your shin made impact with his hoodie, he lifted his arm, his hand quickly latching onto your ankle and holding it in place.
âOoh, nice try, sweetheart,â he hummed, shooting you a crooked grin. He drank in the shocked look on your face as his expression grew a fraction darker and his grip on your ankle tightened.
âBut not nice enough.â
He swiftly threw down your foot, watching as you stumbled back at the force. You didnât get the chance to regain your balance before he was suddenly looming beside you, his fist flying toward your nose. With a yelp, you ducked, your arm shooting above your head to grab his arm in midair. He blinked as your fingers dug into his sweater, curling tightly into the fabric. Then, a devious grin crept onto his face.
As much as you may try, he had the upper hand when it came to brute strength.
But to his shock, he felt something sharp and hard slam into his gut, knocking the air straight out of his lungs. He quickly back-pedaled, but your hold on his sleeve didnât let up. He only barely caught a glimpse of your kneecap before you stepped behind him, twisting his arm around and pinning it to his back. Just then, he felt something brush against his ankle.
No way.
In the blink of an eye, his legs were flying out beneath him, and he was flipping into the air. With a thud, he slammed into the ground, a dull ache shooting through his back as the grass cushioned his fall. Before he could even react, you quickly placed your foot on his chest, keeping him thoroughly pinned down.
His eyes were the size of saucers as he took in your half-shaking figure, your eyes trained on his fallen form. You panted above him, your fists slowly uncurling. âWasâwas that good?â
Clay gaped at you, his head spinning with what youâd just done. You had just knocked him, a trained soldier and practiced assassin, flat on his back with practically no instructions whatsoever. He had only given you twoâwell, two and a halfâsimple tips before putting you on the spot, and you still managed to take him down.
There was no sugarcoating itâyou were a prodigy.Â
If he wasnât in love with you before, then he definitely was, now.
Pride swelled in his chest as he closed his mouth, swallowing. He stared at you for a moment longer before shaking his head free from his reverie. He couldnât wait to teach you more.
â[Y/N],â he breathed, his lips stretching into an awed grin, âyouâre amazing.â
You blinked, pointing to yourself in surprise. âI-I am?â
He nodded without even an ounce hesitation, his grin growing even wider. âVery.â With a small grunt, he pushed himself back onto his feet, dusting off his behind before turning back to you. âNow,â he said, âdo it again.â His eyes glinted with something akin to mischief. âI wonât go easy on you this time.â
You tilted your head at him as a devilish smile of your own tugged at your lips. âIn that case, neither will I.â
He raised a brow at you, but he couldnât stop the affection bubbling up in between his lungs. He felt his heart beat faster as you settled into a fighting stance, your arms raised in front of you. âThatâs the spirit.â
Your eyes locked onto each other, and for a moment, all was still.
Then, you came barreling towards him, your eyes glimmering in the sunlight. His lips curled into a smirk as he raised his foot.
Perhaps teaching you to fight wasnât too bad of an idea, after all.

Taking Chances Ch. 28:Â Summer Changes (School)
AO3
Prev
A week after the Disney movie marathon, Marinette was finally back on patrol. No thanks to her dad though. If it was up to him, sheâd probably never patrol again. Luckily for her, (unluckily for him) her brothers were adamant on her coming back to the field. Which led to her current problem. Hanging upside down from a gargoyle near Wayne Enterprises.
âUkht, what have you done?â Damian asks, and though she canât see his face, she can tell by his voice that heâs exasperated. Join the club, she thinks, at least youâre not upside down.
âWhy do you automatically think I did something?â She asks, trying desperately to turn around so that she can talk to him. It was really awkward talking to someone when you couldnât see them but you knew they were near you.
âBecause you are the one hanging upside down,â Damian says flatly. She huffs.
âItâs not like I want to be, Robin. It just kind of happened,â She says.
âAnd how exactly did it happen? I have never seen your yoyo betray you like that before. Not even in the videos when you were still very new.â Damian says, and she swears heâs smirking. Heâs definitely laughing at her on the inside, and as much as she wants to be frustrated, she canât. It wasnât easy amusing her little brother (unless you were an animal) so she wasnât about to ruin it.
âHood made a bet relating to this exact gargoyle and Iâd never been this way before and I just, I donât know. Somehow I misjudged where my yoyo was going and next thing I know, Iâm tied up and Hood is gone.â She says, sighing.
âWhere did he go?â Damian asks.
âOver here so I could record the dumbass trying to untie herself.â Jason says with a snort, she manages to turn just enough so she can see him and stick her tongue out at him. He chuckles. âYouâre the one who somehow tied herself up with a magic string, Iâm just getting the proof so I can show Wonder Woman.â He says and Marinetteâs jaw drops.
âYou wouldnât dare!â She screams, struggling against her yoyo, finally able to get the string to loosen slightly.
âOh, Iâd dare.â Jason says and Marinette just knows he has a huge smirk underneath his stupid helmet.
âBut Wonder Woman is the coolest person ever and she canât see me like this!â Marinette complains, trying not to grin when she feels the string start to move the way she needs it to. She ignores Jasonâs next remark, instead focusing on the string and- yes! She free falls for a moment, laughing at her brothersâ panic before she swoops up and jerks Jasonâs phone away from him.
âYou little shit!â He calls after her, starting to chase her.
âYouâll get it back once I delete the videos!â She calls back, laughing as she continues swinging through Gotham, a warm feeling in her chest as she looks over the city that has quickly become her second home.
---
âHAPPY BIRTHDAY!â A voice screams, making Marinette jump out of bed with a yelp. She clutches her hand over her heart, glaring at her oldest brother.
âAre you trying to make sure I donât make it past my fifteenth birthday?â She asks with a huff. Dick just grins.
âHappy birthday kiddo! I canât believe youâre already fifteen!â He exclaims, picking her up in a giant hug. She wants to complain, ask him to let her down, but itâs nice, so instead she returns the hug the best she can. Until she glances out the window.
âRichard Grayson.â She says in a tone she usually reserves for enemies. She feels him stiffen, the hug turning into more of a restraint than a cuddle.
âYes?â He says.
âDid you honestly wake me up, before the sun, because itâs my birthday?â She asks.
âYes?â He says, his voice cracking slightly. She purses her lips and lets out a long sigh.
âDad has a no killing rule.â She says, and suddenly sheâs back on the ground.
âOh would you look at the time, Marâi needs another bedtime story loveyousomuchgottagobye.â Dick rushes out, practically sprinting out of her room. She just smiles and shakes her head. Sheâd learned intimidation tactics from Jason and Damian, who both claimed her size made her an easy target against bad guys. They were right, of course, so she was fine with a few extra lessons. Seems they were working. Deciding to call her Maman and Papa since sheâs already awake, she frowns as it goes straight to voicemail. It would be nearly eleven in Paris, so the bakery shouldnât be too busy. She quickly checks the Akuma Alert App to make sure she hadnât missed anything while she slept. Nothing. So why werenât they answering? She had assumed they would be waiting for her call since it was the first birthday sheâd spent without them. Sighing, she lays back down on her bed, closing her eyes and trying to fall back asleep.
As she lays there, she frowns as a realization hits her. This was the anniversary of her birth motherâs death. Her mood instantly sours and her stomach churns. It was the first year that she could do something about it, the first year she could visit her grave. Quickly making a decision, Marinette throws on a pair of black leggings and an oversized black hoodie. Hopefully no one would spot her.
âKaalki.â Marinette calls out quietly, not wanting to wake Tikki (who had somehow slept through Dickâs intrusion).
âOooo, Guardian, are we sneaking out?â They ask, an amused smile on their face. Marinette frowns.
âYes, but itâs for a good reason.â She says, and Kaalki snorts.
âWhatever the reason, Iâm happy to be of assistance.â They reassure her. Marinette smiles and calls the transformation, opening a portal in the cemetery where her birth mother is buried. Her Maman had taken her once, right after telling her she was adopted. It was extremely hard to avoid being akumatized that day, and Marinette steels herself before dropping Kaalkiâs transformation. Today would probably be even harder. Pulling the hood over her head to try and hide her identity, she glances around the cemetery, unsurprised to see the small place empty. Despite its small size, it was well taken care of, with beautiful trees adding shade and creating a melancholy feeling. Taking a deep breath, she walks over to the tombstone in the far corner, underneath the Willow tree. Bridgette Le. Died July 9th. Marinette barely notices the tears that start to form as she sits down, tucking her knees into her chest.
âHi Mama. I-Iâm sorry I havenât really been by to see you much. Did you know Iâve been spending the summer with Dad? Sometimes, I wonder if you wouldâve been okay with that. None of us really know why you left, why you didnât tell him. Iâm not blaming you, I just wonder if you wouldâve been okay with me knowing him.â She talks, though she knows sheâll never hear a response. And she tries to pretend that fact doesnât hurt her. âI have brothers. Four of them. Theyâre all great in their own ways, but they all also make me want to rip my hair out. Three of them are older, Damianâs younger than me. He kinda acts like a big brother at times though. And I have a big sister, Cass. She doesnât say much, but sheâs awesome. Sheâs in Hong Kong right now, so most of our conversations have been video calls. I have a niece, too.â Marinette stops, wiping furiously at her eyes. She didn't want to cry. At all. But knowing her birth mother would never be able to be part of her life, would never know any of these people like she did- it was hard.
âGuardian, please breathe.â Kaalki says, floating up to sit in front of Marinetteâs face. Marinette blinks at the Kwami before listening to them. If they were worried, then Marinette was more lost in her head than she originally thought.
âAnd todayâs my birthday. I was excited at first, and then I remembered the other thing that this day was. Remembered that itâs also the day you-â Marinette pauses, and grits her teeth. âI am so sorry, Mama. I am so sorry that I caused your death.â She chokes out, dropping her head onto her knees, trying to suppress the sobs threatening to break out of her chest.
âWe need to go. Marinette, we need to go.â Kaalki urges, patting her cheek urgently. Marinette calls the transformation and falls through a portal, closing it quickly to keep the butterfly that was surely after her from following. She definitely didnât need to test how far the victim had to be to be akumatized. The second she lands, she lets the transformation drop and the sobs break out.
âShit Pixie.â Jason curses, and suddenly sheâs wrapped in a warm hug, sobs tearing through her as she continues to apologize.
---
Jason Todd had been through a lot of weird shit. Waking up in a pool of green water after being fucking murdered by the Joker, was weird. Emotional baby sister falling through a portal into the room and sobbing? Also weird. But also heartbreaking. He grabs onto her and just holds her, desperately trying to give her some type of comfort.
âShhhh, itâs okay Pix. I got you.â He mumbles, holding her close. Damian rushes in, sword drawn, face scrunched up when he sees them. Jason shakes his head, this wasnât something that they could fix with a sword. He wasnât exactly sure why his baby sister was crying so hard, but he had caught a couple of muffled apologies, so whatever it was, he didnât think it was something that he (or Damian) could kill. Or, rather, maim, since she was against murdering people that were against her for some reason.
âHas anyone seen Mars, sheâs not in her room-â Replacement starts, freezing as he walks into the room.
âExcellent situational awareness, Drake.â Damian mutters, glaring at him. Jason shoots both of them a glare, now was not the time to be fighting. Especially since the kidâs other parents were on their way to celebrate her birthday. If they showed up and she was sobbing, theyâd take her home and never let them see her again. And Jason was NOT going to let that happen.
âAnyone know if Mâs decided to not kill me yet?â Dick asks, walking into the room with a huge grin that falls the second he sees whatâs happening. Jason resists the urge to roll his eyes. Apparently none of his brothers could read a fucking room. Instead of staying at the edge of the room like Damian and Tim, Dick walks over.
âHey kiddo, itâs okay. Weâre here.â He says softly. The kid pulls away from him, though he can tell itâs a little reluctantly, before launching herself at Dick, her sobs starting to die down. Jason lets out a short huff, running his fingers through his hair as he tries to think of what could have set her off. There were no akuma alarms, but she fell out of a portal. Which means she was out of the manor when she got upset. He watches as Dick pats her hair gently and whispers to her. God, heâs such a dad. Then again, heâs been mother henning him and their other brothers for years, so itâs not really a surprise.
âIâm sorry guys.â Marinette says suddenly, her voice small as she stays hidden in Dickâs arms.
âNo need to apologize, Pixie Pop.â Jason reassures her. She finally pulls away from Dick and Jasonâs heart, honest to god breaks at the broken look on her face.
âShe died in childbirth, you know.â She whispers, and suddenly it makes sense. Why she was sitting there sobbing on her birthday, why sheâd fallen out of a portal.
âThat is not your fault.â Damian says firmly, walking over and standing face to face with Marinette, something Jason knew annoyed the girl. Damian was two years younger, but a little taller than her. She didnât seem to mind now, though.
âBut it was. If I hadnât been born-â She starts and Jason frowns at the thought.
âThe world would be a much shittier place.â He says with finality, not leaving room for her to argue. âPix, youâre amazing, and the world would really suck without you. Never be sorry you were born.â Jason says firmly, stumbling slightly when she launches herself at him, wrapping her arms around him tightly.
âThank you Jay.â She mumbles, and he can tell sheâs crying again, but this time itâs not sobs, so he thinks itâs fine.
âCome on, letâs all watch a movie.â Repla- Tim suggests and Jason raises an eyebrow at the idea, briefly wondering what kind of movie heâd pick. They all pile on the giant sectional that Bruce had bought specifically for impromptu movie nights as Tim sticks the DVD in. Jason just snorts as the title card for âThe Addams Familyâ comes on, settling back in the couch, ready to watch one of the greatest movies ever.
---
âThank you again for flying us out here for her birthday.â Sabine says, smiling at him. Bruce returns the smile and nods.
âOf course, thank you for letting her spend the summer here. I know sheâs appreciated the break from her classmates.â He says, his smile quickly fading at the confused look on both Sabine and Tomâs faces.
âWhat do you mean?â Tom asks.
âMarinette hasnât told you?â Bruce asks, suddenly regretting bringing it up. Why hadnât she said anything? They were her parents too. Sure, sheâd made it clear they couldnât know about Ladybug, but her class wasnât a hero problem. They were a civilian problem.
âWe knew that she wasnât hanging out with them as often, and that she didnât talk about her class as much as she used to. We just assumed that she was busy.â Sabine says, her face a mixture of sadness and anger.
âMy apologies, I assumed sheâd talked to you.â Bruce says, feeling as if he had crossed a line. Would they be mad at him, for her telling him something she hadnât told them?
âSheâs always looking out for others first,â Tom finally sighs, a tired smile on his face. âShe probably thought she was saving us from being akumatized.â Bruceâ jaw clenches. Had Marinette really suffered in silence to avoid being forced to fight her parents?
âWe can continue this conversation later, right now we should focus on her birthday.â Sabine says, placing a hand on Tomâs arm. He nods and Bruce makes a note to talk to the two about the possibility of her switching schools.
âSheâs probably in her room.â Bruce says, leading the two towards the stairs.
âActually, Master Bruce, the children are all in the informal sitting room. I believe they snuck down to have a movie night after Master Dick woke Miss Marinette to wish her a happy birthday.â Alfred says, Bruce watches his face and knows thatâs not all, but doesnât press. It had to be something that he couldnât talk about in front of the Dupain Chengâs.
âOf course they did. Thank you, Alfred. Alfred, this is Sabine Cheng and Tom Dupain, Marinetteâs parents. Tom, Sabine, this is Alfred Pennyworth. Heâs the man who raised me.â Bruce says, smiling at him. The three exchange pleasantries and soon Bruce is leading the two to the sitting room. He pushes the door open gently, careful not to let it slam. He spots a sword on the floor near Damian and quickly grabs it, moving it away. If he was woken up suddenly, he would still panic and attempt to fight his way out.
âShe looks so peaceful.â Sabine whispers, and Bruce smiles, a genuine smile, he didnât have to fake a smile when most of his children were together and safe and happy. Or, quiet, at least. It was rare.
âIâve found them like this several times.â Bruce admits, pulling out his phone to show the two all of the pictures heâd taken of the kids piled together sleeping. Sabine and Tom smile widely at the pictures and Bruce quickly sends them their favorites.
âB, I swear to god, I can sense you in here. Let us sleep.â Jason mumbles grumpily.
âSorry Jason, Marinetteâs parents are here so itâs time to get up.â Bruce says, amused at the way his sonâs hair was attempting to defy gravity. Jason looked around sleepily, waved lazily at Sabine and Tom, and then collapsed back on the couch. Bruce sighs. âWould the two of you like to have a cup of coffee while we give them a few more minutes to sleep?â He offers.
âThat would be lovely.â Sabine says, and Bruce leads the two to the kitchen, hoping Tim (who had sat straight up after Jason flopped down) would take the hint and wake up the others.
---
Marinette sighs happily as everyone sits down at the table for dinner. The day had been amazing, despite the rough start. And her Dad had even flown her Maman and Papa out to spend the day with her. They couldnât stay for long, they had the bakery to run after all, but it was still nice to see them. Marinette glances at the end of the table where a place was set, but no one sat.
âWhatâs with the extra plate?â Jason asks, turning to Alfred who was sitting in the chair next to it instead of his regular seat.
âIt is for Miss Le.â He says, and she can almost feel everyone freeze. Her throat tightens, but she still smiles at him with watery eyes.
âThank you, Alfred.â She says quietly. He nods.
âYou are quite welcome, Miss.â He says. She clears her throat and looks back at her Maman, noticing that her smile was also a little sad. It had been all day, but Marinette was certain it wasnât anything to worry about. Bridgette had been close with her Maman, surely she was just mourning her today, openly for the first time in a long time.
---
Marinette groans at whoever is trying to wake her up.
âFive more minutes.â She mutters, burrowing deeper under the covers. It was summer break, why wouldnât anyone let her sleep?
âCome on sweetheart, your Papa and I want to talk to you and Bruce.â Her Maman says, and she immediately sits up. Was she in trouble? Had her Maman figured out the whole Batman thing? Had she figured out the Ladybug thing?
âUh, okay.â She says, sliding out of bed and stepping into slippers. She wasnât sure how serious the conversation was, but since her Maman didnât stop her from walking out of the room in her pajamas, she relaxed slightly. It couldnât be that serious, right? She follows her Maman into her Dadâs study, glancing wearily at the clock in the corner. Her Maman was often too observant. Hopefully she didnât notice anything odd about the clock. They all sit in silence for an entire minute until Marinette canât handle it anymore.
âAm I in trouble?â She asks hesitantly, looking between her parentsâ faces.
âOf course not, we just- We noticed how different you are.â Her Maman says and Marientte frowns, furrowing her eyebrows. Different? She was different?
âHow?â She asks.
âYouâre happier than Iâve seen you in months honey. Your smile reaches your eyes, you talk freely, you seem peaceful.â Her Maman says softly, and Marinette blinks in surprise. Had she really been so easy to read in Paris? Had her parents really been able to tell? Sheâd wanted to hide it from them, not let them see how everything was piling on her, crushing her. She didnât want to worry them.
âWhat do you- how-â She stumbles over her words, trying to figure out where she messed up.
âWe didnât know why until we talked to Bruce.â Her Papa says and she turns to glare at her Dad, feeling a little betrayed. He holds up his hands in surrender.
âMarinette, you didnât tell me not to tell them about your class.â He reminds her, and she huffs.
âGuess we can cross mind reader off the list of things you can do.â She mumbles, making her Papa snort.
âIt wasnât just that though. Weâd seen how restrained you had become, how you never went out with friends and you stopped talking about them.â Her Maman says softly. Marinette grits her teeth, hugging herself to try and hold herself together.
âI didnât want to worry you.â She says, her voice barely audible. That wasnât the main reason though. She didnât want to fight her parents, and if they knew everything going on with Lila, theyâd definitely be akumatized. She couldnât fight them. Not if she could help it.
âWhat would you say about transferring schools?â Her Maman asks suddenly, and Marinette jerks her head up, looking at her with wide eyes. Transfer schools? It would be great, amazing, fantastic, but- but her classmates would still come to the bakery. Still give her the same odd looks theyâd been giving her since they found out that sheâs a Wayne.
âWhat school?â She asks, because yes, that makes a difference. Chloe had transferred schools not long ago, and Marinette did not want to trade Lila for Chloe. Sheâd rather not deal with either of them, if she was being honest.
âGotham Academy.â Her Maman says, and Marinette feels lucky that she wasnât drinking anything, because she would have definitely done a spit take. Gotham Academy? As in, live in Gotham year round? What-
âAre you giving me up?â She asks, suddenly hurt. Her Mamanâs eyes widen and her Papa pulls her into a giant hug.
âOf course not honey.â He says, rubbing her back gently and squeezing her lightly.
âWe asked Bruce if he thought Gotham Academy would be a good school for you. He offered to let you fly home some weekends, and any of the breaks you want. Or to fly us out here if you have time off school. You donât have to say yes, and you donât have to make a decision right now.â Her Maman reassures her as her Papa lets her go. Marinette turns to look at her Dad, his face unreadable.
âWould you really be okay with that?â She asks, and he nods.
âWe all just want you to be happy, Marinette. Wherever that may be. And weâre all willing to work together to do that.â He says and she smiles, letting out a soft sigh.
âI- Iâd need to think about it a little more,â She says, running through the idea in her head. It seemed perfect, besides the whole âbouncing back to Paris for attacksâ thing. But sheâd been doing it all summer, it had been fine so far. And maybe, maybe, Hawkmoth would even be defeated by the end of summer. No matter what, things were changing and Marinette was trying her best to keep up.

prompts: could you write an in canon verse (so like gods and stuff are real) fic with amnesia? it could be post TLO or it could be one of them coming out of anesthesia and feeling wonky. i just love a good memory loss fic.
@halfbloodcarrie was instrumental in making this happen!!! Her adorable fluffy idea was completely paid dust in favor of making this angsty as hell but I blame her for me getting it done at all <3
read on AO3
Everything was dark. And everything hurt. His head especially was throbbing, but he couldnât make out any other feeling. He could hear something; vague at first, just a ringing. But if he struggled, and he did, he could start to make out faint voices. His eyes refused to open, they wouldnât even blink, but the noises were getting clearer by the second.
âWhat if he doesnât wake up?â a worried voice asked. Something about it felt familiar, but he couldnât even pry his eyes open, much less figure out who it belonged to.
âHeâll wake up,â a second voice said, male this time. He sounded confident, assured. At least he thought so.
âThere was so much blood, I thought⊠gods.â
The first voice again, though this time it wavered. It sounded scared, terrified even.
âHeâll be alright, Annabeth. Heâs got a thick skull.â
That made the first voice laugh, watery as it was.
âDonât I know it.â
Some feeling was starting to return to his limbs, slowly but surely. He tried blinking again, but it felt sluggish, slow. Suddenly he realized he could feel his arms and fingers, and there was a hand in his, gripping it so tightly it was a wonder he hadnât felt it before.
âPercy?â the female voice asked, hopeful. He groaned. His head was pounding like nothing heâd ever felt before. Actually, he wasnât sure if that was true, because he couldnât remember his head pounding before, ever.
Come to think of it, he couldnât remember anything at all.
He blinked again, this time managing to pry his eyelids open a fraction of a degree. The light streaming in hurt like a bitch, and he groaned again, closing his eyes.
âPercy,â the first voice said again, more frantically, âCan you hear me?â
She seemed to be talking to him, though he wasnât quite sure. He couldnât remember his name, but sheâd said Percy twice, so that had to be it, didnât it?
He tried to say something to the girl, but it came out as a strangled groan of pain.
âWill,â she said, a little desperately.
âHeâs maxed out, Annabeth, Iâm sorry,â the other voice said.
The girl (Annabeth?) muttered something under her breath in-- was that Greek? And how did he know that? More determined than ever, Percy blinked again, this time managing to crack his eyelids open and keep them that way.
His vision was blurry, but a few more blinks and the vague shapes in front of him started to sharpen into focus.
âPercy?â the girl said again. Percy squinted, trying to focus on her.
The first thing he noticed was that she was-- well, pretty didnât quite describe it. She was seriously beautiful. Her eyes were a dark grey color, currently wide with concern, her hair framing her face in cascades of golden curls. Her nose was small and button shaped, dotted with freckles.
Even if Percy didnât currently feel like a small blacksmithâs forge was hammering on the inside of his skull, he was pretty sure he wouldâve been rendered pretty speechless.
âHey there, sleepyhead. You were out for a while,â she said, smiling. She did look relieved, but Percy didnât miss the genuine worry behind her eyes either, the little waver along her lips trying to maintain an upbeat expression.
âI⊠whatâs going on?â Percy asked. Annabeth bit her lip, looking over her shoulder. Percy glanced upwards, properly seeing the other person in the room for the first time. He was a teenager, with shaggy blonde hair a shade or two lighter than the girlâs. He was wearing a white lab coat over what looked to be an orange t-shirt and jeans, which didnât exactly instill Percy with a lot of confidence in whatever medical care he was receiving.
Of course, the fact that he had no memory didnât help matters.
âYou sort of got hit in the head,â Annabeth said, wincing as she did.
âReally hard,â the boy added.
Percy reached up tentatively, to the place where it felt like his skull was splitting inside out. Instead of skin he felt something else, some thick sort of fabric.
âOw,â he said, a little unhelpfully. The girl smiled again-- crap, how was she even more beautiful when she smiled?-- but it still had an edge of sadness to it.
âYeah. Discus accident,â she said.
âDiscus accident?â Percy asked, confused.
âYeah. Those stone frisbee things, remember?â the other guy said.
âNo,â Percy said, pushing himself into a sitting position. It made his head throb, but he couldnât stand lying down anymore. âI donât-- I donât remember anything.â
âYou mean-- you mean you donât remember the accident,â Annabeth said, a little forcefully. Her grey eyes flashed, and Percy didnât quite recognize the expression, but something in his gut told him it was not good.
âNo, I mean I donât remember anything,â Percy repeated, figuring it was best to get it out of the way sooner or later, âI donât know where I am or who you are or who I am.â
The girl took one very long look at him. He didnât know what exactly he had said in particular that had triggered something in her, but the concern fell from her face in an instant. She dropped his hand, something sharp overtaking her expression.
âYouâre such an ass sometimes,â she said. Her voice was a little thick, but Percy couldnât tell if she was crying, because in the next second she stood and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Inadvertently, Percy felt a twinge of something sad in his chest, though he couldnât quite place why. He didnât know Annabeth, but she clearly seemed to know him, and what heâd said had clearly set her off.
All of this was really not improving his headache, which had resumed its throbbing with reckless abandon.
âI didnât mean toâŠâ Percy trailed off. To what? Upset her? Make her run away? But all heâd done was tell the honest truth-- he couldnât remember shit. The guy was giving him a look that was bordering on disgust.
âDude, thatâs really not funny,â he said. He sounded pissed, though if Percy wasnât entirely mistaken, there was a hint of fear behind his bright blue eyes.
âIâm not trying to be funny, I literally donât know whatâs going on,â Percy said, starting to feel a little frantic. Why was everyone here acting like they knew him? And why did he not even know him? He felt nerves and something else tugging in his gut, an insistent, terrifying pull--
Without warning, the glass next to his bed shattered, spraying water and glass everywhere. Percy flinched away from the table, whirling around to look at the boy. His eyes were wide and surprised.
âWhat the fuck was that?â Percy asked, alarmed.
âThat was⊠you,â the boy said, staring at Percy like he had just grown a second head, âStyx, youâre not making this up, are you?â
âHow many times do I have to tell you that I donât know whatâs going on for you to believe me?â Percy said, still staring wide-eyed at the place where the cup had shattered. For his own sanity, he decided to ignore the boyâs declaration that he had caused it.
âFour, apparently,â the boy said, rubbing his forehead like he could feel a headache coming on, âUnless you want to make it five for good measure?â
âI have absolutely no memory,â Percy repeated.
âGreat. This is just-- this is awesome,â the boy said, sighing heavily.
âYeah, Iâm having so much fun over here,â Percy said dryly.
âRight, sorry,â the boy said, wincing, âYour name is Percy.â
So Percy had guessed that correctly. Good to know.
âMy name is Will,â the boy continued, oblivious to Percyâs thoughts, âThe girl was--â
âAnnabeth,â Percy finished. Will perked up, hopeful, but Percy shook his head.
âI heard you say her name,â Percy explained. Will deflated.
âOh, right,â he said. He sounded inordinately disappointed, way more disappointed than heâd been when Percy hadnât remembered him.
âHow exactly did this happen?â Percy asked, doing his best not to rub his forehead again. Will sighed.
âSome newbies were messing around with the discuses on the strawberry fields-- which is stupidly dangerous, by the way, we have an arena for a reason-- but it went a little off course and almost hit Annabeth in the face. You shoved her out of the way but it clipped your forehead pretty good.â
Percy tried to process all that, piece by piece. He didnât know what a newbie was, and apparently wherever this place was had strawberry fields that he and Annabeth had been in together? But the strangest thing of all was that Percy didnât feel at all surprised that heâd gotten injured trying to get Annabeth out of the way. That piece felt strangely right to him, even if everything else was messy and confusing.
âSo me and Annabeth are friends, then?â he asked. Will gave him a strange look, his face paling slightly.
âYou guys⊠youâre close. Really close.â
Percy nodded. That made sense. He didnât know why Will was being weird about it, but he believed him regardless.
âShe was mad at me,â Percy noted. At this, Will winced.
âYeah. Memory loss⊠it's kind of a sore subject for her.â
âWhy?â Percy asked. Maybe it was a little invasive, but this was all stuff he was supposed to know anyway, wasnât it?
Will sighed, rubbing his face in his hands.
âGods, Iâm so not the person to be explaining this to you,â he said, âBut a few years ago you sort of⊠disappeared. And you lost all your memories. Except you remembered her. But it was really, really tough on her, she had no idea if you were gonna know anything or not when she found you.â
Percy blinked, trying to take all that in. He had a feeling that was the hyper-condensed version of what had gone down, but it explained the situation well enough. Annabeth hadnât considered the fact that he genuinely wouldnât remember her, so sheâd assumed it was a bad joke. Percy wished it was a bad joke, because he would give absolutely anything to remember more about her.
âGot it,â Percy said, trying not to frown, âSo how did I get my memories back last time? Can we do that again?â
Will grimaced.
âI think last time you drank gorgonâs blood, but weâre fresh out of that.â
Percy stared at him, unsure if he was joking or not. He looked serious, but Percy didnât want to press it. Clearly last time had been a different sort of deal.
âSo what do we do? I canât go around like this forever.â
âWell, hopefully it's just temporary. Your head injury, plus the mortal pain meds we gave you, plus the nectar--â
âThe what?â Percy asked.
âDonât worry about it,â Will said, a little hurriedly. âThe point is, your brain is processing a lot of stuff right now. My best guess is that it overloaded a bit, and the amnesia is a side effect. If thatâs the case it should go away on its own eventually.â
âAnd if itâs not the case?â Percy asked, dreading the answer a little. As predicted, WIll grimaced again.
âIt could be from the initial injury. In which case it would be⊠more permanent.â
Percyâs mouth went a little dry.
âGoodie.â
âIt probably isnât,â Will said, though he didnât sound entirely convinced.
âSo what do we do?â Percy asked again.
âYou could try going to sleep. It might give your brain a chance to readjust, chill out a little. OrâŠâ
Will trailed off, clearly unwilling to finish his thought.
âOr?â Percy prompted.
âOr we could try to jog your memory with stuff you might remember,â Will finished. Percy didnât understand why this option seemed to be so unpleasant to Will, since it made the most sense to him. He felt disoriented as hell, and he was pretty sure he wasnât going to be able to calm his mind down enough to sleep anytime soon. Plus, he was pretty sure heâd been unconscious for a good long while.
âHow long was I asleep just now?â Percy asked.
âA while,â Will admitted.
âSo letâs try the other thing.â
Will swallowed heavily, his fingers gripping the sides of his white coat a little too tightly.
âYeah. Okay,â he said, still not sounding happy about it at all, âIâll-- ugh. Donât move, Iâll be right back.â
Percy did not move, mostly because he didnât think he could get up from his bed if he tried. Being alone gave him the chance to observe the room he was in a little bit. It was small but clean, sort of a cross between a normal bedroom and a hospital unit. The walls were made of old looking hardwood, and if he craned his head back a little bit he could almost see out the window. It looked green out there, but it was kind of hard to tell.
Nothing about this place felt familiar, but that didnât mean much, given nothing Percy had experienced since waking up felt familiar.
Nothing except for those few flashes of feeling heâd gotten about Annabeth, anyway.
Will was gone for a long time, a lot longer than Percy had been expecting. He couldnât tell time very well and he didnât see a clock anywhere, but it felt like Will had to have been gone at least half an hour, maybe more. Just when Percy was about to give up and try taking a nap, the door opened again. Will was there, but this time Annabeth was in tow too.
Percy tried not to read too hard into the fact that she didnât look happy to be there. If he wasnât mistaken, her eyes were puffy and red from crying, though now they were narrowed in barely constrained anger, her arms folded over her chest.
Will, for his part, looked extremely nervous. That didnât give Percy a lot of hope about how this was going to go.
âIt would probably work better if you could get up and walk around, but wellâŠâ he trailed off, but Percy knew exactly why that wasnât possible. Just keeping his eyes open had been a struggle, and he was pretty sure if he tried to stand right now he was gonna black out.
âYeah, sounds like a bad idea,â he agreed. Annabeth said nothing, just kept staring with her jaw clenched tight.
âI figured-- you know, you remembered Annabeth last time,â Will said, still sounding nervous, âAnd you guys have known each other for years, so if anything is going to jog your memory⊠well.â
âOkay,â Percy said, easily.
Annabeth remained silent.
âIâll leave you guys alone,â Will said, looking like he absolutely couldnât wait to get out of the room. He did a second later, slipping out the door and shutting it behind him.
Annabeth looked extraordinarily unhappy to be there. Any care that she had displayed for him when he first woke up was apparently gone. She said nothing as she looked at him with nothing but ice in her eyes.
He didnât know why exactly she was so pissed-- it wasnât his fault he couldnât remember anything, and wouldnât it be worse for him anyway? But she didnât seem keen on speaking to him anytime soon, and Percy figured it was up to him to break the ice.
âSo, um. Are you single?â Percy asked. It was dumb, sure, but he didnât remember shit, and this girl was pretty and she seemed to care about him and well? Might as well shoot his shot.
Annabeth muttered something under her breath, something that sounded suspiciously like Iâm going to kill you. Cool. Definitely did not make her hotter to him, not even a little bit.
âIâm not single,â she said, practically glaring at him.
âGot it. Sorry,â Percy said. For just a second her eyes ducked away, sadness replacing anger. But then she looked back up, and her previous expression was reinstated.
âWhy donât we just stick to you,â she said.
âSure,â Percy said. He didn't want to make her mad again, because he had a feeling if that kept happening it would not end well for him. He wasnât sure what could be worse than complete and total amnesia, but looking at Annabeth he was pretty sure she could think of something.
She took a deep breath, a little unsteadily.
âYour name is Percy,â she said, âI guess Will already told you that, though.â
Percy nodded. She moistened her lips, staring down at the ground.
âOkay. What else do you want to know?â
âWhere are we?â Percy asked. It wasnât his most urgent question, but it felt like a safer one to ask. Then again, from the look on Annabethâs face, maybe that was a miscalculation. She was biting her lip, the anger in her expression softening slightly. It seemed to be replaced by something sad though, and Percy found he almost preferred the anger.
âItâs⊠a little hard to explain. But weâre at a camp. A summer camp. Itâs-- itâs where we met.â
âWhy are we here now?â Percy asked. Annabeth shrugged.
âWeâre just visiting,â she said.
âTogether?â Percy asked. She stared at him, swallowing heavily.
âYeah. Together,â she said, though she was clearly unwilling to elaborate.
Okay then. Time for a new line of questioning. A safer line, one that hopefully wouldnât put her on the verge of tears.
âWhatâs my favorite color?â he asked.
âBlue,â she said, instantly.
âFavorite food?â
âAnything blue,â she said, just as fast.
âI eat blue food?â Percy asked, confused. She smiled for the first time since heâd told her his memory was gone. It was small, but it still made his heart flutter.
âYeah. Itâs sort of an inside joke with you and your mom,â she said. The smile faded just as fast as it had come, but her answer had inadvertently given Percy more information than heâd expected.
âSo Iâm close to my mom?â Percy asked, unable to help it. Annabeth nodded again. She took a tentative step forward, sitting back down on the chair beside his bed.
âWho else?â he asked, without thinking. Annabeth frowned, a little confused.
âWhat do you mean?â she asked.
âI mean--â Percy started, realizing this might be a little too much too soon, but wanting to know so badly he couldnât help but ask anyway, âI mean, who else am I close to?â
Annabeth didnât answer for a long minute. She was looking down at the ground again, her hands gripping her own shoulders, arms shielding her chest. She seemed to be contemplating something, though what it was, Percy wasnât sure.
Maybe he shouldnât have asked that question. Maybe it was too personal-- with a start Percy realized that Annabeth was probably a pretty high priority for him, given the scant details he knew about their relationship, and him not knowing that intrinsically had to hurt.
âIâm sorry,â he said, âJust forget it, tell me something else.â
She finally looked back up at him, though she still seemed upset and unsure.
âNo, itâs fine,â she said, though she was clearly forcing her voice not to waver, âLike I said, youâre close to your mom, her name is Sally. You have a sister named Estelle and a brother named Tyson. And your best friend is--â she stumbled, but found herself again, âHis name is Grover.â
Percy noticed that Annabethâs own name was conspicuously absent from that list. Maybe he should keep his mouth shut, all things considered, but his curiosity got the best of him. He wanted to know this more than anything.
âWhat about you?â he asked, voice quiet.
It took her less time to answer than he expected, but she was still quiet for a minute.
âYou asked me if I was single,â she said finally, eyes ducked down, a rosy blush growing in her cheeks, âAnd I said no because-- because weâre dating. We have been for a while.â
âOh,â Percy said. He could feel his own face getting red, even though this was kind of great news-- or maybe not so great news, considering his stupid brain still couldnât remember shit. But it still felt right, like a puzzle piece slotting into place. Of course he was dating her. That was just correct, an inalienable fact he felt dumb for not knowing, despite not knowing anything at all.
âYeah,â she said, âBut you donât remember, so⊠so I donât know anymore, I guess.â
âIâm sorry,â Percy said, and he felt it. He felt like an idiot, both for trying to flirt with her earlier, and for not putting the pieces together sooner. The hand holding probably should have given it away, at the very least.
To his surprise, Annabeth gave him a small smile, even though her eyes were a little red. She wiped them on her sleeve, clearly trying not to do it in an obvious way.
âSorry, itâs just-- thatâs so you,â she said, sniffling a little.
âWhatâs so me?â Percy asked. He felt stupid, oblivious, but she just smiled again, a touch wider this time.
âApologizing for something that isnât even your fault.â
âI really am sorry,â Percy said, and he felt worse with every word, âI want to remember, I do, itâs just-- all of itâs gone.â
âI know,â she said. She sounded defeated. âI guess it would be too much to ask for you to remember me twice, huh?â
She said it like a joke, but Percy could feel the real pain behind her words. He felt an ache in his chest, like a phantom pain he couldnât quite place, something in him mirroring her own hurt. He wanted so badly to comfort her, but he didnât know how.
Or maybe he did. His brain was a jumbled mess, but he did know the only things that had made him feel anything since heâd woken up had to do with her.
âI⊠I almost get flashes,â he admitted, glancing up at her again. She wasnât quite meeting his eye, looking somewhere over his shoulder, but he continued anyway. âWhen you say or do things⊠Itâs like my body knows what to feel but my mind doesnât know why.â
She glanced up, her eyes finally meeting his own. They were still shining with tears, though not as intensely as before.
âLike how?â she asked, simply. Percy swallowed heavily, not exactly sure what to say. It was hard to describe, given heâd barely recognized his own feelings.
âLike⊠like when you left, before. I was upset but I didnât know why. I didnât know you but I knew⊠I knew that was supposed to hurt, somehow. And when Will told me about how I got hurt in the first place, how I was trying to keep the frisbee thing from hitting you-- that felt right, but I donât know why.â
She had graduated to crying in earnest now, tears slipping out of the corner of her eyes and falling down her cheeks. Percy felt the inexplicable urge to reach out and brush them away, but he knew he couldnât. And that hurt too for some reason, a hollow aching in his chest he couldnât quite place even though the reason for it was standing right in front of him.
âAnd right now,â Percy continued, even though maybe he shouldnât, âYouâre upset and I just feel this urge to do something, and I canât because I donât know how.â
âPercy, please--â she said, still crying, her voice rough with tears. He didnât know what she was begging for, but he couldnât help his next words slipping out, like his tongue knew more what to do than his mind.
âI donât know anything about me, but I know-- I know I love you. I can feel it. Iâm not just saying it either, I swear I can feel it.â
âPercy,â she said again, her voice barely above a whisper this time.
âYou have to help me, Annabeth. I donât know what to do,â he said, and this time it was his turn for his voice to get thick, a lump in his throat obscuring his words.
âI--â she started, swallowing heavily, eyes welling with tears again, âI donât know what to do.â
âYes you do,â Percy said, and he was sure she did, something in him just knew, âYou always do, donât you?â
That felt right too, even if he couldnât place why, but it seemed to mean more to her than to him. She stared at him, eyes wide and scared. She was so close now, close enough that he could see every freckle on her nose.
Annabeth looked so panicked that for a second a second, Percy thought she was going to hit him, but then she did the opposite. She leaned over and kissed him.
Her lips were soft and sweet, and she tasted like strawberries and salt. His lips seemed to know exactly what to do, moving against hers like theyâd kiss her a thousand times-- and maybe they had. His hand moved, almost of its own accord to her hair, tangling in it, pulling her a fraction of an inch closer--
And then it hit him. The scent of her shampoo, lemony and sharp and familiar.
He gasped, not meaning to, but she pulled back, grey eyes wide.
âPercy?â she asked, hopeful even as she tried to hide it.
âAnnabeth,â he said, trying not to panic as things started to float through his mind-- more than things, memories. Her face and her voice and her words, the feeling of her hand in his and her smile against his lips, it all started to flood back like it had never left.
âAre you--â she asked, her hands on his shoulders, gripping tight, too tight, but he didnât even care.
âAnnabeth,â he breathed, saying her name like a revelation, because it was, âYouâre Annabeth Chase, youâre my girlfriend and an architect and youâre scared to death of spiders and you still sleep with a teddy bear--â
She cut him off at that last point, throwing her arms around him and hugging him harder than she ever had-- except for maybe that time sheâd thought he was dead for two weeks and heâd crashed his own funeral. Percy hugged her back just as hard, because he actually remembered that.
It hadnât all come back-- things were blurry, most things, actually. But Annabeth at least felt clear in his mind, a shining beacon welcoming the rest of his memories back. He was already starting to get a headache again, but he didnât care. They would come back. And even if they didnât-- he had her. That was enough.
She pulled back from her bone crushing embrace, keeping their faces so close their noses were almost touching. She seemed scared that if she pulled away he might too, even though he had no intention of doing so, physically or mentally.
âSo youâre back? Really?â she asked, sounding scared to know the answer.
âSort of,â Percy confirmed, wincing as he did. He really was starting to get a pounding headache. âI remember you. And bits and pieces of other things, but mostly you.â
Annabeth breathed a sigh of relief, closing her eyes for a long moment.
âYou scared the shit out of me,â she whispered, her hands trailing up his neck, just barely scraping his hair.
âI know. Iâm sorry,â he breathed. And he did know, now better than ever. It couldnât have been more than a few hours since heâd woken up without his memory, but he knew every minute of it had to have been hell for her.
Annabeth sighed, pulling back further, so he could see her whole face. Her eyes were still red from crying, and her cheeks were still flushed from their kiss. But he could see the barest traces of humor in her expression, a slight tug at the corner of her mouth where a smile was being repressed.
âWhat?â he asked, but she just shook her head.
âItâs nothing,â she said, but her smile had grown.
âCome on, I just had amnesia. You have to tell me.â
She laughed, a light tinkling sound. It was just on the edge of being hysterical, but she deserved it, after the day sheâd been having.
âFine. I was just thinking-- Hera couldnât make you forget me but a glorified frisbee could?â Annabeth said.
âHey, it was heavy!â Percy protested, but he couldnât help but grin as he did. He would probably stay grinning for the rest of his life, actually.
âYouâre such an idiot,â she breathed, pulling him into a hug again, âI love you so much.â
âI love you too,â Percy said, hugging her back. And now he knew he did, in a permanent, tangible way.
There was still a lot missing, but he had the most important bits down. His name was Percy Jackson. He was twenty years old, and in college and a demigod, and lots of other things that would surely return with time.
And he loved Annabeth Chase more than anything in the world.

part one
part two
He's not panicking.
Just because he knows Eddie had court at 9am and they had plans to talk at lunch, and it's now 7pm and he still hasn't called.
Nope, definitely not panicking.
He isn't pacing the apartment either. No, he's just taking a leisurely stroll back and forth across his living room. There's just nothing good on TV. He isn't panicking, there's no reason to panic.
He had texted him at 1 and, after getting no answer, again at 5. He picks his phone up where he'd thrown it not even five minutes ago face down on the couch. He swipes his way to his messages.
Nothing.
He clicks "đEdwardođ" and scrolls through their messages from the last couple days. He sighs and clicks the text box.
Hey, I'm gonna stay up until I hear from you, so call me whenever.
He sends it and throws the phone to the side, collapsing against the back of his sofa. He picks up his laptop, clicks on the video chat app, and stares at the stupid picture Eddie had chosen as his icon. The edge of his mouth lifts in spite of the sick churning in his stomach. "Eddie fucking Kaspbrak," he mumbles with a shake of his head. He's still looking at Eddie's picture when he starts to doze off.
He has no idea how much time has gone by when he's woken up by the sound of a call coming through his computer. His vision's blurry, he pushes his glasses back up on his face, and sees Eddie's smile way too close to the camera. He accepts the call. "What the fuck, man?"
"Richie!" Eddie cries. "Did I wake you? You said you were staying up."
Richie stretches and yawns before picking the laptop up and putting it on his coffee table. "Guess I fell asleep." He narrows his eyes. "Where are you?"
"Out! With Matt!"
Richie wants to ask who the hell Matt is but the camera is on the guy before he gets the chance.
"Look, Matt, it's my boyfriend," he hears Eddie say, "the guy I was telling you about!"
Richie has a moment of disconnect. "Uh," he says cleverly.
Matt leans closer. "Wait, holy shit, you really are Richie Tozier." He grins. "When Eddie said he was dating a celebrity, I didn't believe him."
"Fuck you!"
"Uh, hi?" Richie says. He's still reeling from 'boyfriend' and 'dating.' "Sorry, who are you again?"
Eddie turns the phone back, his face swims into view unsteadily. "My new manager! I hired him last week, he's gonna manage the New York branch when I leave."
"Okay, you're screaming."
"I'm celebrating!" he yells, raising a glass. He knocks it back and drains it to prove his point.
It's loud, Richie can hear the sounds of other people talking and laughing. He guesses they're in a bar. "Can you go outside or something? I can barely hear you."
Eddie's nodding as he gets to his feet. "Shit, yeah, sorry," he says when he swallows. "Matt, I'll be right back."
"Take your time, boss. Nice to meet you, Mr. Tozier!"
Richie makes a face. "Did he just call me Mister Tozier?"
Eddie laughs. He leans against the cool bricks of the building once he gets outside. "Yeah, he's like that."
"So," Richie starts after a beat, "how'd it go?"
"Oh! We found a place!"
"A place?"
"Yeah, an office building," Eddie replies excitedly. "Matt found it on the computer. And! He put up an ad for people to email me their resumes. It was so much easier than I was making it, big shocker there, right."
Richie tilts his head for a second. "That's fantastic, Eds, but what about court?"
"Oh, oh! Richie!" Eddie's smile splits his face. "She signed the papers! She dropped everything she was asking for, a share in the company, all the alimony. She told me on the way out it's because she's already engaged, and all I could think was 'that poor schmuck." He laughs, open and cheerful. Richie doesn't know if he's ever seen him so happy.
"Wow, that's awesome. Congratulations."
Something in his voice must give him away. Eddie's eyes soften and his smile fades. "Oh, Rich, I'm so sorry. I was supposed to call. I was just so excited to get everything done, we worked right through lunch. I'm booking a flight to LA tomorrow. Richie, we're going to he together before the end of the week." His eyes are so bright and happy, Richie wants to drown himself in them.
"That's- Wow, Eds, that's amazing." He pauses. "You're amazing." Eddie's eyes start to water and Richie figures he must be way drunker than he's letting on. "Wait, how are you video chatting from your phone?"
Eddie blinks. "Oh, there's an app for it."
"Yes, I know there's an app for it. How in the hell did you know there was an app for it? The only app you have on your phone is a calculator."
"Matt downloaded it for me. I saw your text and mentioned I needed to call you, so he showed me how to do it."
"That's great," Richie says flatly. "Matt's great."
"Yeah, he really is a whiz at the technology stuff."
"That's what happens when you hire a 20 year old."
"He's 25." He considers Richie a moment. "Wait, what was that?"
"What was what?"
Eddie eyes him. "That tone was hostile and, like, jealous. Are you-"
"I'm definitely not jealous."
Eddie's eyes widen. "You're lying! That's your lying face!"
"I have a lying face?" Richie asks, raising his eyebrows.
"You do, and you're making it right now. Why would you be jealous of Matt?"
"I'm not!" he protests. He sighs. "I dunno, man, it's just like, the most important day of your life and that's who you're celebrating with."
"Richie," Eddie says. His voice is gentle, like trying to coax a wild animal into a cage. It makes Richie want to punch a wall at how ridiculously easy it is for Eddie to turn him to mush. "I would rather celebrate with you than anyone in the world. But, baby, you're not here."
Richie's mind short circuits so hard over the word 'baby' that it takes him a full 30 seconds to process the rest of that sentence. He scoffs a laugh, completely humorless. "Yeah, and whose fault is that?"
Eddie's face crumbles and he looks down and away from the camera, like he's ashamed. Like Richie is embarrassing him.
He instantly feels like a jackass. "I'm sorry, Eds, I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I was just worried, when you didn't call."
"I said I was sorry. I got busy."
"I texted you three times," Richie replies. He feels like a petulant housewife who spent all day cooking a dinner that her husband never came home to eat. He guesses that's exactly how he sounds, too.
Eddie turns his sad eyes on Richie. "I didn't even look at my phone until like fifteen minutes ago. I called as soon as I saw them."
"I know, I know." He shakes his head. "'I'm sorry, 'm being a dick."
Eddie smirks. "Imagine that."
Richie breathes out his nose and wills himself not to be angry. Always understanding, never upset. Always with a joke but never with a complaint. How he's been all year, all his life with Eddie, if he's honest with himself. Never too emotional or serious, just in case it overwhelms. "I'll let you get back. Just let me know when you book your flight, I'll clean the guest room."
"The guest room?" Eddie's face falls. "I have to sleep in my own room? You're that mad that I forgot to call?"
"No, it's not- I just didn't want to assume-"
"Or is it because I'm out with Matt?" Eddie continues like Richie hadn't even spoken. "Because I barely even know him, Rich. I was just in a good mood and we both needed to eat. It doesn't- I don't know if he's even gay."
Richie feels green. "He's cute," he says neutrally. "He's there. You're drunk."
"Richie."
He shakes his head, rubs his palms against the denim on his knees. "I know, I know. I'm being stupid because I miss you and I missed today and I- I'm sorry."
Eddie eyes go big and wistful. "I would never- Rich, I've spent the entire time since I've met him waxing poetic about you. Besides business shit, you're the only thing we've talked about. He's probably getting sick of it, honestly."
The sudden leap of his stomach makes him want to puke. "It's okay, Eds, you don't have to-"
"Richie," Eddie cuts him off. He pulls the phone closer to his face. "Richie, I'm crazy about you. You know, sometimes-" He laughs, blushes, glances away for a second. Richie wants to look at him forever. "Somtimes after we hang up, I jerk off to the memory of the sound of your voice. It's kind of pathetic. I'm completely gone on you, is the point I'm making."
"I-" he stops himself. He'd sworn at least a hundred times over the passed year that he wasn't going to say it until Eddie is in front of him. And he's going to keep that promise. "You're- you're everything, sweetheart. I- You know how I feel about you, don't you, Eddie?"
Eddie's smile is blinding. "Yeah, I think you waiting on me for almost a year while I got my shit together is a pretty big clue."
Richie grins back.
"I have to go settle the tab," Eddie says after a moment.
"You could call me," Richie tells him, "when you get back to your room. Jerk off to my actual voice, instead of the memory. I could say something worth jerking off to."
Pink rises on Eddie's cheekbones and flushes down onto his neck, right where Richie wants to bite him. "Thanks, now I have to go back in there at half mast."
"Oh, you are so very welcome. No need to thank me. The pleasure's all mine, really." The sad thing is, he isn't lying. Nothing gets him going faster than the mere idea that Eddie wants him. The evidence of it, the confession, has him rock hard in his pants already.
"You're insufferable."
"Insatiable, Edward. The word is insatiable."
Eddie rolls his eyes with a chuckle. "I'm going to call you in 45 minutes," he promises.
Richie nods. "I'll have my script ready. The never ending list of things I'd do to corrupt the pure and innocent Eddie Kaspbrak."
"Insufferable!" He pauses, still smiling even though he's griping. "45 minutes."
"I'll be here, Eds." He flushes with the honesty of it. "I'll always be here."

I hope this is where you send a request lol. But i wanted to know if you could do prompt 16 with Kuki Urie:)
Itâs been a while since I wrote anything about this fandom and creating the new masterlists made me realize just how little I wrote about them so far.
Tw: Yandere themes, unhealthy mindset, unhealthy relationship, possessiveness, obsessiveness, overprotectiveness, manipulation
Prompt 16: âYou donât understand! If you accept me now, Iâll be your slave!â
He was crying. He was really crying right now. It wasn't shocking, you had seen other men crying before, but you hadn't expected him to cry. Not in front of you. Or because of you. You had always been his reason of happiness as he had told you. So seeing him spilling tears right now was breaking your own heart just like his had been just now broken. His breath was uneven, silent sobs disrupting it's natural flow. He was trying to not be too loud, keeping the volume down. But the silent cries were the worst.
You just stood there, body having gone stiff and unable to move. You wanted to comfort him like you had done always in the past. But how could you if you had been the one who had brought him the pain in the first place? Was there even something you could say right now? What was a person who had just friendzoned another who had confessed supposed to say? But you had to do something, right? You couldn't just leave him here all alone.
Urie had the feeling like someone had just slammed his heart mercilessly with a sledge, it was aching. The last time he had felt something akin to this had been when his father had died. Back then he had been a child, he had not been able to handle all the emotions. Now he was grown up and had thought that he had been able to control his feelings.
What a lie that was, he was on an emotional roller coaster whenever he had been near you. Your whole being and thoughts on you had been for a long time now flooded his mind and senses and he had thanked whoever was watching from the clouds for letting him meet you.
Thanks to you he had learned how to really live again, how to feel again. Never once had he realized before how grey and cold his world had been before. But thanks to you he had realized just how blind he had been, that his life had been nothing so far. Not without you. You had given his life in a way a purpose, something far more greater than working as an investigator. Your love.
Happiness. Joy. Excitment. This sweet and addicting feelings you stirred up in him whenever you did as much as being somewhere near him. It was so wrong, the sickenly obsession he had with you and the people who he had already let his ire out because they had managed to get on your bad side, meaning also on his bad side. He was all too aware that going that far was wrong, but he hadn't cared in the slightest bit.
How could he when you had helped him getting over his pain, being the light to lead him out of the dark hole he had been stuck in so far? Everything he had experienced with you had been like a complete new thing for him. Even the most common things like walking with you somewhere had led him to seeing the world through new eyes. You were without a doubt the cause of his euphoria.
But never before you had given him a completely shattered and burnt heart or made him cry hot and large tears. Normally he would never cry in front of people. But he was vulnerable in front of you. He couldn't hide anything emotionally when it came to you. You were after all the person who made him go through all the intense feelings.
"Why?" His voice was nearly cracking at the end, his eyes still fouced on the ground where tears were constantly dropping on. You opened your mouth several times just to close it again. You almost felt like crying too, seeing Urie in such a condition. It was just a sign of how much your rejection had really just hurt him. There was surely something you could do for him without making him feel even more shitty.
"Kuki..." You slowly stepped closer, searching in a rushed manner for something you could do to soothe him a bit. "Am I not enough? Is that it? Do you think that there is someone better?" The volume of his voice was something that reminded you of a mouse, it was hushed and barely above a whisper. You also couldn't recall a time where he had ever sounded so unsure, so anxious.
"No! That's not it! You're great! Believe me, I really think of you as a awesome and cool guy." By now you were merely a foot step away from him, noticing now that you were close up how his body was shaking due to his choked breaths and silent sobs. "I-I'm just afraid that I can't give you what you ask me to give you. I love you a lot, but in another way. I don't want to lose you because of this Kuki. I know that sounds a bit easier than it is, but...let's just stay like this. We're happy as we are right now."
"That's a lie." You bit your bottom lip when hearing his quivering voice. Slowly, very slowly, he shifted his gaze from the ground to your lips and then to your eyes. His eyes were reddened and a bit puffy, tears still streaming down his face. "How can I ever be completely happy when I'm without your love? What am I even here for then? You were the one person who taught me how to live again and for that I just want to protect, love and pamper you with everything I have. Without you and your love I'm-I'm a nobody."
"That's not true Kuki! What are you talking about? You're not a nobody! You're a great investigator and I would say that is a reason why you're here. To lead your own squad and work with the CCG to protect the citizens of Tokyo. Shouldn't that be enough? Knowing that you have to protect the lives of the many people in this city?"
The man gave you an aghasted expression, looking like you had just said the most dumbest thing ever. "The CCG? The lives of the people here in Tokyo?", he repeated after you, still having this non believing look on his face. "Do you really think they mean to me nearly as much for me as you?" With one step he closed the bit of distance you had between each other, you almost reflexive taking a step back, feeling suddenly frightened of his unhinged expression.
"You're so wrong with that (y/n). I'll let them all happily die if it means that I can spend more time with you. What are they worth anyways? The only thing I need to be happy and live a good life is you! The rest can just die!"
In such a twisted way you knew that this was somewhat like the ultimate confession of love, being ready to let others get murdered or eaten by ghouls just to be able to survive another day with the person you loved. And yet it was the most egotistical thing you had ever heard. You even felt offended, maybe because you knew Mutsuki and Saiko yourself. Was he saying he would even let his friends die? You searched for any sign on his face that would tell you that this was just a mere act out of desperation from his side. But you found nothing.
"You really mean that, don't you?" Your voice was giving your discouragment and disappointment away, which didn't go unnoticed by Kuki. His facial expressions seemed to twitch, the disappointed look in your eyes adding even more layers of pain over his already broken heart. He hated this expression, the look that told him that he had not made you happy, but only made you upset with him. He hated that. Why was he never able to be good enough for you? He wanted to be perfect, the best. Just for you. But no matter how much he seemed to try, it was never enough. Was he really that imperfect?
His silence spoke books for him and you felt slight anger rousing up inside of you. How could he say this? Would he really let his friends and comrades die? You thought that he was the kind of guy who would fight til the bitter end. You had troubles believing him.
"So you want me to feel guilty because of deaths of people you could have saved, but didn't because you weren't willing to risk your life?" Urie quickly shook his head. "That won't be your fault (y/n)! It'll their fault for not listening to orders and being careless." What was he saying? "They'll die because they're willing to give their all for the people and their job! And you are supposed to do the same, Kuki! I thought that was why you joined in the first place!"
You quickly shut up when realizing that you were damn close to yelling right now and maybe the tiniest bit because all the yelling seemed to affect Urie as well. You were also almost about to cry, but blinked quickly to get rid of the tears in your eyes.
"Be honest with me. Did you already let someone die because of me?" He fell silent for a few seconds, making you feel more and more anxious. He hadn't, had he? "...No." The answer seemed suspiciously delayed, but his face wasn't giving anything away. So you took that answer, hoping to soothe the uneasiness and anxiety inside of you. "But you would?" He seemed to hesitate for a bit, debatting on with himself whether he should lie to calm you down or say the truth. But he had already spilled it out, hadn't he? "Yes, I would."
A disappointed and shocked noise escaped your lips, rubbing your eyes whilst busily thinking about what you were supposed to make out of this. "(y/n)...Please don't be mad at me." You peeked between one of your hands currently covering your face at him. He appeared to come over as pleading, eyes begging you to forgive him. And you couldn't help, but feel your heartstrings getting tugged at.
Without any words you suddenly grabbed a jacket of yours and walked to the front door, hearing Urie following you with huge and fast footsteps. "Wait! Where are you going?"
With your hand resting on the door knob you turned around, being met with his face only inches away from yours. "I...need some time alone to think about this Kuki. You need to understand, this was maybe just a bit too much for me to take in at once. And the fact that you told me that you don't care about the lives of other people in Tokyo just because you don't want to stop coming over to me...I think I need to think about our whole relation-and friendship in general. I don't want to stop being your friend, but maybe...distancing and stopping to see each other helps you coming back to your senses."
His eyes widened, obviously your words just now had scared him, but right now you needed time to think for yourself without anyone interrupting you. So you swiftly opened the door, about to leave.
That was before Kuki slammed the door with a loud 'wham' closed, body instantly moving itself between you and the door, blocking your way out. You flinched startled, for a moment blinking shocked before you came back to your senses and annoyance started to flicker inside of you. "What do you think you're doing?! Move your ass away from the door or else I'll have to go with less nice methods!" He didn't, he just continued to drill his frightened gaze at you, seemingly not wanting to let you leave him. "Kuki! Now!"
"You don't understand!" He sounded extremely despaired, a distraught expression on his face which made you slowly take a step back from him. But this sudden move of yours seemed to trigger him and before you could even react, he had already grabbed your hands tightly in his own. "If you accept me now, I'll be your slave!"
You had temporarily abandoned all of your annoyance and anger, currently you felt freaked out by this extremely deranged behavior from his. "You have to listen to me! I'll do anything you want me to and I'll be anyone you want me to be! I'll clean for you, I'll cook for you, I'll kill for you, I'll die for you, I'll live for you! Whatever you want! But don't leave me alone! Not you too..."
You slightly tried to free your hands from his, but you were scared that he would get triggered by any sudden movements which was why you kept such things at a minimum right now. You felt truly alarmed right now, not being able to tell what he would do next. Fleeing looked like a stupid idea, he was due to his not humanly body much more physically strong and faster than you were and you didn't want to risk it. But you doubted that talking would help him either. He was clearly not in his right mind.
"You need help." You stiffened up the moment you had whispered those words loud, cussing yourself for saying something like this in front of him.
"Help? You really think I need help?" You didn't like it one bit just how much distraught he looked right now whilst still keeping a look of fondness on his face whilst gazing at you. It didn't mix well. "I don't want any help. Don't need them either. They wouldn't be able to do much anyways. I know just how bad my case is and I doubt that anyone would be able to help me. Don't you see?" You didn't know if you were supposed to give him an answer or not, but you just shook your head when hearing him muttering these words.
"The only person that is able to help me is you. You're the one who made me this way in the first place and you're also the one who can help me. You made me how I am. Don't you think it's only fair if you help me before someone really dies? You'll just be there for me and I'll take care of anything else. Doesn't that sound like a good offer?"

A/N: This one was requested by the awesome @mychemicalimaginesâ. I hope this is everything you imagined it to be, lovely! Iâm sorry itâs taken me so long to get this done for you, but Iâve been so swamped with uni work and placement that Iâve just had no motivation for writing. But inspiration struck tonight and I decided to put it to good use.
A/N/Pt2: If youâre in to Friends and Twilight check out their imagines! The seriesâ are so good and addictive, I cannot recommend them enough! Leaving a link to the Masterlist HERE.
I blinked owlishly, trying to make my eyes feel less exhausted, but it was to no availâIâd been unable to sleep last night and I was unwilling to admit that it was because Peter had asked for his hoodie back. Iâd taken it months ago, well not purposefully, heâd just left it behind one day after weâd been hanging out. Iâd been chilly that night, and I figured Iâd throw it on, only to discover it was the comfiest thing everâit was huge on me and it smelled of him, and so Iâd grown accustomed to how content and safe it made me feel. Obviously I hadnât realised how much Iâd grown to rely on it to sleep until last night at around three in the morning, when I realised it was the first time in months Iâd gone to bed not wearing it.
I yawned, pulled my cardigan tighter around me, and took a large gulp of the coffee Iâd poured myself before leaving the house to head to school. Iâd managed to drop off around five in the morning, which led to me sleeping through my first four alarms. By some grace of god, Iâd made it to first period as the bell rang. I finished off my coffee, and threw the disposable cup into the recycling bin on my way out of the roomâthank god Iâd had the beverage as my first period had been math; Iâd have definitely dozed off without it.
âHey, Y/N! Wait up!â I paused at the sound of my best friendâs voice, mixed feelings erupting through me. Tiredness made me clingy, which Pete was used to, but I was also a little pissed being as in my mind it was his fault I was tired to begin with.
âHey, asshatâ I grumbled, wrapping my arm around his waist and melting into his comforting warmth.
He chuckled, âsuch wonderful greetings from you, Y/N. Itâs a wonder my head fits through the halls with how much you boost my ego.â
I rolled my eyes, an involuntary smile forming on my face, âIâm tired, I think I got thirty minutes of sleep last night. I canât to go home and sleep until Sunday.â
âWhy didnât you sleep? Is there something on your mind?â I felt my irrational irritation with him soften at the concern in his voice; he knew me well enough to know if I had trouble sleeping, it usually meant there was something on my mind causing my insomnia.
âNo, I just didnât realise how much Iâd come to rely on your hoodie until you took it away.â I felt my lips form into a slight pout, and had I not been exhausted and as a result, needy, I would have been embarrassed.
My head was tucked into his side, my face against his chest, and so I missed the soft, fond look that overtook his expression. I did notice the new girl giving us a look of longing and jealousy, but I ignored her. The other students would clue her in soon enoughâwe were friends, best, best friends. It may look like we were more due to how touchy we both were with each other, but our relationship didnât extend beyond a deep, meaningful friendship. It had taken a while for everyone to understand it, and to stop giving us the same look the new girl was giving us now, but they learned eventually.
âHow about thisâŠâ Peterâs voice bought me back to the conversation, âyou come to my game tonight, and Iâll give you my hoodie to keep forever.â
I bit my lip to hide my smile; it was typical Peter Kavinsky. He knew I wouldnât miss one of his gamesâI was always there, rain or shine, wearing his jersey and cheering him on. But he was sweet enough to make it sound like I was doing him a favour when in reality, it was him who was doing something nice for me, by making sure I got his hoodie doing something I was planning on anyway.
I looked up to him, ignoring how my heart fluttered when he tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear when it fell in front of my eyes, âyouâd give up your favourite hoodie, for me to come to your game?â
I felt my heart melt at the bashful expression that overtook his features, âof course I would. I mean it took me months to realise you had it anyway. Clearly it means more to you than it does to me.â
âYou make a good point.â I teased, biting my lip as I thought and missing the way his eyes followed the movement, âokay, if youâre really okay with it, you have a deal.â
âAwesome.â He grinned, and I found myself subconsciously beaming back at him, powerless to not return his happiness.
 //
âCome on, Peter!â I mumbled under my breath, the tension in the air palpable and affecting everyone, it was as if we were all holding our breath in anticipation, âyouâve got this!â
Peter ran forward, passed the defence and took his shot at the goalie. It was so quiet I could hear the puck hitting the back of the net and I was unable to hold back my cheer of happiness, which seemed to snap everyone else out of their shock and they joined me. Brown eyes found mine and I felt my heart skip a beat as he unclipped his helmet, tucked it under his arm and made his way over to me, easily bypassing the rest of the audience whoâd flooded the pitch. I felt my heart beat pick up and by the time my best friend reached me, my heart was pounding against my ribs. He was watching me with such intensity, that it made my knees feel weak. His beautiful brown eyes were soft with an emotion that I couldnât identify, as well as fondness, happiness and determination. I had no idea what to expect when he finally joined me on the stands, but when he tossed his helmet aside, and placed both of his hands on my cheeks, I knew that everything was about to change. And when his lips met mine in a tender, tentative kiss, I threw my arms around his neck and succumbed to it. It was meant to be, and I was powerless to fight the passion, and the intensity that moved between us. But more importantly, I didnât want to.

 Third Person POV
Daisy Hank didnât know what to think when she attended her second day of school. It seemed that there was a buzz in the air from the moment she walked through the doors, as if something had happened and everyone was talking about it. She felt a nervous knot form in her stomach, worried that it was somehow about her, but after a few deep breaths and reassurances it dissipated. There was no way it could be about her; sheâd only started yesterday and she hadnât spoken to anyone for long enough for her to accidentally reveal anything embarrassing.
She frowned and walked to her locker, trying to focus her hearing to pick up what was going on from the group of girls that were gossiping next to her locker. She opened it up and pretended to search for something as she managed to get close enough to listen in.
âIs it true? Peter and Y/N are actually together?â one of the girls murmured, Daisy didnât know any of their names, but she could easily hear the disappointment in her voice.
âYup, apparently it happened last night at the lacrosse game. He scored the winning game and ran on the stands to kiss her.â This girl sounded dreamy, and Daisy felt herself instinctively relax a little at the absence of aggression in her tone.
âIt was like a Cinderella Story. So romantic.â The third girl mirrored the secondâs tone and even sighed.
âSo unfair. Kavinsky is the most attractive guy at this school, now whatââ the first girls bitterness was cut off by an elbow to her abdomen.
Daisy frowned, until she followed their gaze and saw the aforementioned couple walking down the hall. They were in the same position as yesterday; her arm around his waist, his over her shoulders and her face tucked against his chest. And yet, there was a definite change between them, Daisy noticed. Maybe it was because Y/N was wearing a hoodie that was obviously his, or because he now had her backpack slung over his shoulder along with his own, or maybe it was the soft, fond and loving way they looked at each other. But either way, a change was definitely there, and Daisy once again found herself wishing that she had someone who looked at her the way they were observing each other, just like she had yesterday when sheâd first laid eyes on them. Except now, she only wanted it more, because unlike yesterday the love and affection they had for each other was radiating from them without restriction. It was as beautiful as it was mesmerising and Daisy released a dreamy sigh of her own as she slammed her locker shut at the sound of the school bell. As she made her way to English, she hoped one day, she would find someone who loved her like that.

âmr. wheeler!âÂ
logan looked around the parking lot, squinting into the sun. one of his students was running at him full speed, holding his cell phone aloft and waving it around excitedly. âwhatâs up, alex?â
alex drew to a stop in front of him breathlessly. âi got in,â he said, lips splitting into a big grin. âcal tech, i got in.â
âhey, thatâs awesome!â logan said, reaching out to clap the student on the shoulder. âcongrats, alex. thatâs a huge accomplishment.â
âdude, thank you so much for your recommendation,â alex said, nodding enthusiastically. âyouâre honestly the best teacher iâve ever had.â
âgive yourself some credit,â he smiled, âyou worked hard, and cal tech is lucky to have you. just donât forget to come back and visit, yeah?â
âfor sure,â alex agreed. with one last grin, he was gone, and logan finished getting his things in the car so he could head home, the rest of the students and faculty in the parking lot of mar vista high well used to the roar his devoreâs engine made by now, after three years of teaching.
ellieâs car was already in the driveway when he arrived back at the house, and logan frowned when he parked on the street and jogged up the walk to their front door. it was early for her to be home; usually his day ended well before hers. as he walked inside, he wondered absently if the fact that sheâd had an early afternoon meant sheâd started dinner, and if he was possibly lucky enough that she was making that noodle thing he liked so much.
âellie?â his keys landed in the bowl by the door with a familiar clink, his shoes kicked off one by one on the mat. âbabe?â
âin here!â the stressed-out voice of his wife filtered in from the spare room. as soon as logan took a step towards the hallway, there was a sudden and aggressive rapid tap-tap-tap on the hardwood floor, and their dog ran at him at full speed, jumping up onto his legs with an excited bark.
âhey, clark,â he said gently, bending down to scratch the dog behind his floppy ears, âeverything okay in there?â
the pointed silence that followed seemed to speak for itself. he followed the hallway down to the spare bedroom and found ellie sitting on the floor, surrounded by ripped-open cardboard boxes and indistinguishable small plastic pieces.
before logan could ask what she was doing, she frowned up at him and said, âiâve been trying to put this baby carrier together for three hours.â
he arched his eyebrows at her, looking over the small mess sheâd created in the middle of the room. âyouâve been here for three hours?â
ellie pulled a face at him, her lips twisted into a grimace. âmorning sickness that lasts all day again,â she explained, scrunching up her nose. âjack caught me coming out of the bathroom and sent me home after lunch.â
âoh, no,â logan said sympathetically, dropping down onto his knees on the one free space of carpet. âi was hoping thatâdâve gone away by now.â
âyou and me both,â ellie sighed, puckering her lips at him for a quick kiss. âi guess it was too much to hope for a baby without a rebellious streak a mile wide.â
âiâm still holding out for your dimples,â he grinned, âand that laugh. as long as the baby gets both of those, theyâll be set for life.â
âthe baby is five minutes away from sleeping on the floor. iâm about to trash all of this and go take a nap.â the downtrodden expression on ellieâs face tugged at his heart in a way her cute little sighs always seemed to manage to. logan was already smiling when she squinted up at him hopefully and asked, âwill you help me try to put it together?â
as if there was ever a chance heâd say no. ââcourse,â logan answered, âtwo heads are better than one, right? although you are an engineer...â
âbelieve me, graco is going to be hearing from me,â ellie grumbled, rolling gingerly to the side to shuffle awkwardly out of the way of the pile of pieces sheâd already started putting together. she was just a few months along but already starting to show and moving about differently for it, unaccustomed to her new shape. âthere is no reason these instructions should be more complicated than my masterâs thesis.â
logan laughed, leaning over to take a peek at the paper spread out between her legs. âhey, theyâre not so bad.â he easily snapped two pieces into place, forming the base of the carrier. âthere we go.â
âshow off.â ellie rolled her eyes, pushing another piece his way with a disdainful sniff. âiâm still calling them to complain.â
âand you totally should,â he said easily, âbecause they suck and youâre brilliant.â
âexactly,â she agreed. without looking up he could tell that her eyes were narrowed, her lip curling further with every piece he added onto the carrier, the methodic click of each settling into place ringing out loudly in the silent room. finally, ellie groaned, âgod, i hate you. i knew this would be so easy for you.â
âokay, but thatâs what iâm here for,â he reminded her with another soft smile, reaching out with his free hand to squeeze her knee. ellie huffed when he continued to turn a plastic screw one-handed. âto handle all this shit for you so you can relax. i know you have the hardest job, here.â
âyou are the most annoying person iâve ever met.â ellieâs sigh sounded wistful. when logan lifted his gaze he found her staring at him adoringly, her eyes wet. âi love you.â
âi love you too, baby. any idea what you want for dinner?â he looked away to concentrate on lining two tiny pieces up, frowning when they wouldnât stick quite right. âcome here for a sec, yeah? need some tiny fingers.â
ellie shot him a look, but leaned over anyway, wiggling her hand in the tight space he indicated until the two pieces sealed together with a pop. âmaybe i donât need a refund on my degree after all.â
âthey shouldâve paid you to take it,â logan agreed indulgently, nudging his shoulder gently against hers. âdinner?â he prompted again.
his wife groaned theatrically, flopping back onto the carpet. her arms and legs spread out like she was making a snow angel, disturbing the bubble wrap and cardboard that littered the room. âi want sushi,â ellie said sadly, âand a wine spritzer.â
âwhat about apple cider?â he asked gently, eyes still on the baby carrier even as one hand felt blindly for her calf and dug its thumb into her muscle for a massage. âitâs almost the same thing.â
âitâs not even close,â she sighed. âbut fine. thank you.â
âyou got it. why donât i finish up in here, and you see what we have in the kitchen? itâll just be a few more minutes.â
ârub it in,â ellie muttered, rolling slowly to sit up. âokay. i feel like i should do something nice for you. maybe i can make that noodle thing you like.â
logan beamed at her, leaning in to steal a kiss. âthatâs sweet of you, babe. thank you.â
ellie laughed, kissing him back before she asked, âwhy do i feel like this was all an elaborate set up to get me to make your favorite dinner?â
âbecause youâre a naturally suspicious person?â he guessed, lifting his hand to smooth her hair back off her face. âi donât know.â
âi think itâs because youâre too charming for your own damn good.â but ellie was smiling when he pulled away, and that was all that mattered. it was the only goal he ever had.Â
âno such thing,â logan smiled back, gently nudging her away. âiâm right behind you.â
âyeah, yeah,â she said, waving dismissively, âshow off.â
he watched her walk away, staring until she disappeared around the corner, and then turned back to the mass of plastic and screws that was slowly starting to resemble an actual baby carrier. squinting down at the instructions, it was only a matter of minutes before he had the rest of it assembled, and then a few more while he backtracked, checking over his work to find where heâd missed the one remaining piece that had been left over.
he took the time to clean up in what was eventually going to be their nursery, eyes sweeping over the boxes and gifts that cluttered their spare room. there was a ways to go before they were anything even close to ready for the baby, and he knew ellieâs due date would be here in the blink of an eye.
would he ever really feel ready? it seemed insane, when he sat and thought about it -- he and ellie were going to be parents. more than home or dog owners or two people with jobs and bills, it seemed like a responsibility he felt no where near prepared for or equipped to deal with. sometimes he still felt like a stupid kid himself.
though he had absolutely no doubts about ellie. ellie took to every kid she met like a natural -- his students adored her, riyaâs twins thought she was the greatest thing in the world and were still only lukewarm where he was concerned. the kids in the program they volunteered with couldnât get enough of her.
she kept their house running and all their plants alive. she kept him so happy he was delirious with it, in a way that had felt utterly foreign at first but now seemed so common.Â
enviously, he knew sheâd be mother of the year without even having to try.
the rest of the room was tidied on autopilot as logan remained lost in his thoughts, and when he finally made his way into the kitchen it was, to his delight, to the tune of ellie in the middle of making his favorite dinner, the room smelling as amazing as the sight of her rushing around so domestically looked.
his heart gave a weak lurch as he stepped up behind her at the counter and wound his arms around her waist. his nose pressed into the dip at her shoulder with a sigh. âall done. next stop... crib.â
âdonât remind me,â ellie groaned, âmy dad has been on my ass for weeks.â
logan winced. if there was one thing he knew about detective wheeler, it was that he was just as opinionated as his beautiful daughter. âmaybe he could come with us to pick it out.â
âmaybe he could mind his own business,â she suggested instead, stirring the boiling pot of pasta on the stove. âhe acts like he knows everything there is to know about babies.â
âwell,â logan said, nosing at the hair at the nape of her neck, âhe did raise the most amazing person in the entire world. maybe we should give him some credit.â
âokay, kiss ass,â ellie laughed, âhe canât hear you. but fine. if you really want, weâll all go next weekend.â
he shrugged. it was personally something he felt indifferent towards, but a few extra points with ellieâs dad never hurt. most of the time he was pretty certain detective wheeler still wanted him dead. âi think thatâd be nice.â
âi bet you do,â she murmured, twisting around to hold the spoon she was holding out. âtaste.â
he did, chewing and swallowing slowly. âitâs done,â logan said sadly, knowing the words meant heâd have to move away. ellie laughed as he pulled his arms back and went to set the table instead.
he headed to the fridge for the bottle of sparkling cider, making a show of popping the cork like champagne and pouring ellie a generous amount into the giant wine glass she hadnât been able to use in awhile. she rolled her eyes at him as she put the serving bowl on the table. âitâs not the same.â
âitâs pretty close,â he argued, lifting his own glass up and swirling it like heâd seen many pretentious people at restaurants that made him uncomfortable do. âitâs a beautiful vintage,â he declared, as though he had any idea what that was supposed to mean, âwith notes of... apples.â
gratifyingly, ellie dissolved into giggles, shaking her head. âi canât stand you,â she said fondly, all smiles. he grinned back at her, lifting his glass to his lips.Â
âto the baby,â ellie said suddenly, lifting her glass, too, and bumping it into his.
âto you,â logan corrected her, clinking his glass into hers a second time.
ellie narrowed her eyes at him. âto you.â their glasses knocked again.
ânuh uh,â he countered childishly, âyouâre the babyâs mom.â
âyouâre the babyâs dad,â she laughed, bouncing up on her toes to try to get at his glass even as he lifted it above his head and twisted out of her way.
âthis is ridiculous,â logan grinned, âjust let me toast you, oh my god.â
âno, it was my toast,â she said, jumping up and splashing apple cider out of her glass and onto the floor, âstop trying to hijack it!â
âokay, okay.â he held his hand out to concede, backing away to drop into his seat at the table. ellie followed suit, smirking triumphantly at him. she still loved to win. âto all of us, jeez. me and you and the baby.â
âto all of us,â ellie repeated, and this time, their glasses touched gently, the sound barely audible over the giggles that were building up in her throat again.
he flashed her a goofy grin before he tipped his head back and drained all his cider in one go.Â
sure, it mightâve been nice to have had something stronger, but --
âmmm,â ellie sighed, smacking her lips as she set her glass down, âyou were right. this is so much better.â

accidentally ruining relationships
Word Count: 3,851
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Warnings: a very stupid Bucky? some terrible humour by yours truly? lol all fluff though I promiseÂ
A/N: PLEASE DO NOT REPOST MY WORK ON ANY SITES WITHOUT MY PERMISSION! (Reblogs are totally okay!) Look at me posting a WIP thatâs been sitting in my drafts for literally forever haha. I hope you guys like it, I love these two idiots so much <3
(Not my gfif, creds to the original creator!!)
Y/N groaned, lying on her stomach and pushing herself into the pillow beneath her, burrowing her face into the fabric in hopes that she could suffocate herself and be done with this world.
âDoll, itâs okay. Breakups happen. Iâm sorry I wasnât here when it happened.â Bucky apologized, rubbing his hand against her back from where he sat next to her on the bed. He had just come back after a three month long international mission, only to find out that a few days he had gone off comms, Y/N and her recent boyfriend had broken up. The soldier moved his hand move to her hair, playing with a few strands like he usually did when she was in need of some calming energy . âI thought you were thinking about breaking up with him anyways.â
âI was,â Y/N frowned tightly, pulling her face from the pillow and looking back over her shoulder at her friend. âThatâs not why Iâm upset.â She sighed as she thought about it for a moment, wishing that talking about these things didnât make her feel so frustrated again. Over the last few months, she had been healing, getting over the typical breakup feelings, but she knew that deep down, this relationship had been all fake anyways.
Bucky waited for a moment with raised eyebrows as Y/N moped further into her pillow. âSo⊠why are you upset?â He finally asked after she didnât continue.
Y/N huffed and pushed herself up off the bed, sitting up to look at him, âThe problem is I expected to feel something... he broke up with me in the worst way, over a fucking phone call, and I feel nothing!â
Bucky blinked, watching as she whined and fell back into his bed. âAnd... thatâs... bad.â Bucky responded slowly, attempting to catch up in her thoughts.
âYes!â She exclaimed, her bottom lip pulling into a small pout. âIt means that I just spent months of my life with this guy who literally made me feel nothing.â
Bucky thought about it for a moment before lying down next to her. âI mean it only happened a few weeks ago. Maybe youâll feel it later.â He suggested, nudging her playfully.
âMaybe,â (Y/N) murmured, though she knew she wouldnât. It had been a long time since she felt anything towards her now ex-boyfriend. Or anyone else really, and she had known this even before she met the newest ex. She had tried to bury it, tried to deny it, but it always came back the same way. She was in love with someone else.
The two laid in silence for a while, until Y/Nâs fingers clicked onto her phone screen and found a playlist called âFor the Brokenheartedâ. Soon, soft melodies floated in the air, lyrics that made Y/Nâs heartstrings feel numb. She felt guilty that she felt nothing, felt upset that there was nothing left over.
âBucky?â Y/N asked after a while, glancing over at him. After the months he had just gone through, Y/N knew that he was probably sleep-deprived and mentally and physically exhausted, so she wasnât surprised at all to find his eyes closed. But since there wasnât his usual falling-asleep twitch in his leg, she knew he was awake.
âMm?â The sound made Y/Nâs lips turn into a small smile, watching the flutter of his eyelashes.
âHave you ever been in love?â
Such a simple question and yet, Bucky felt like he had just been smacked in the stomach, as if all the breath had just been knocked out of him. âS-Sorry what? Me?â His eyes opened to look at her, gazing at her thoughtful expression.
âYeah,â (Y/N) nibbled on her inner cheek, a nervous habit of hers that Bucky had started noticing the first day they met. âLike heart skipped a beat, smile at the mention of their name, cheeks rosy when they look at you, giggles in your throat kind of in love,â Her voice was lofty, matching her head-in-the-clouds sort of facial expression.
Bucky scratched his head slightly, furrowing his eyebrows as he tried to understand why she was asking, âThat⊠sounds super specific,â he commented slowly, but he knew exactly what she was talking about. He had felt all that and more, starting the very moment he had met her, how could he not?
âIâm scared it doesnât exist... every time I think Iâm in love, it doesnât work out. I feel flutters with someone and I think hey maybe these are the right kinds of butterflies in my stomach but it turns out I was just looking for something that wasnât even there,â She sighed, turning onto her side so she was facing him and taking his hand, her fingers playing with his. âI donât want the next guy I think Iâm in love with to turn out to be an ass too. What if I think heâs this super amazing guy, like all the others, and it turns out heâs the worst person I could ever be with?â
Bucky thought for a moment and turned his head to watch her. âOne day, youâre going to find some super cool, awesome guy whoâs going to treat you like the queen you are, doll. Youâll know it when youâre with him⊠itâs like magic. Or a puzzle piece. Youâve got to find the person who fits you and your heart just right. Canât just shove some other piece because it just wont work. But when you find them⊠itâll just click.â
There was a pause filled with a sort of tender love in the air, coming from the romance that filled Buckyâs voice as he talked. Y/N watched his eyes sparkle and they shared a gaze for just a moment that made Y/Nâs insides turn.
âBut until then, you and I can hang out and gossip,â Bucky added in playfully, a smirk on his lips.
Y/N smiled, eyes dropping nervously away from his his but they kept falling t o his lips, as if unable to stop herself from investigating those incredibly kissable lips, âI donât know how Iâd live without you, Bucks.â
He grinned hearing those words, hoping she couldnât feel his heart racing, âWell lucky for you, youâll never have to.â
âUntil some girl comes and sweeps you away from me,â she tried to laugh, tried to make that smile on her face as genuine as possible because he deserved to be happy. She wanted him to be happy. Somehow, not one single girl that had crossed paths with Bucky had seemed to catch his eye, all of them absolutely stunning. If they couldnât make Sergeant Barnes swoon, the kind of woman that would must be out of this world incredible.
âAwh come on, no oneâs going to be taking me away from you. Not anytime soon.â Buckyâs shoulders gave a simple shrug as his eyes started to close blissfully again, not noting the sadness growing in Y/Nâs eyes as she thought about the kind of woman that could make Bucky Barnes feel the way that she herself felt about him.
For just a moment, Y/N watched as he breathed quietly. Her eyes admired every freckle, every piece of hair, every little part of him that she could. She could very much be in love with this idea of something she didnât know, something new, she was aware of that. She had been so scared that she was just falling in love with Bucky because her relationship didnât work out and she found solace and comfort with him.
But it wasnât just because of this asshole breaking up with her. The more she thought about how she felt about Bucky, the more she thought about how often she had waved the idea away with Iâm not good enough for him⊠but that wasnât really saying she didnât like him.
And there was more than just what he was like with her. She loved the moments he thought no one was watching, the way he smiled seeing families play together at the park, the immediate need to help someone when they needed it, like that time he had brought home a litter of abandoned kittens.
There was just something about him.
âYouâre staring,â Buckyâs voice and cocky smirk broke her out of her thoughts, his eyes not even bothering to open.
âCanât help it, youâre far too gorgeous,â (Y/N) shot back, hoping her playful tone would hide her true feelings as she quickly turned to her phone to find more music. She begged the universe to keep his eyes shut, hoping he wouldnât notice how nervous she got all of a sudden.
Bucky peeked an eye open at her words, smirking slightly, âSays the most perfect girl in the universe,â he tested. He just wanted to see that smile once more.
And there it was. Her lips turned into a bashful smile, her lower body squirming shyly. Bucky closed his eyes again, smiling as he saved the picture of it in his mind somewhere.
He felt her shift on the bed and suddenly there was a weight on him. He opened up his eyes to see her straddling his waist, staring at him. âOh Iâm sorry, did I wake you?â She teased, the playfulness in her eyes sparkling.
Bucky swallowed hard, feeling a deep lust for her itching inside of him. His thoughts wandered off for a moment, imagining different scenarios in which she was straddling him. âNah, canât fall asleep. Gotta watch after you and that broken heart of yours,â he finally managed out with a smile.
He watched as she slowly leaned down towards him, her eyes hiding a curiosity behind them as they followed his facial expressions. Their faces were so close at this point, Bucky couldnât help but think about kissing her. Showing her that no other guy sheâs dated was worth her.
Y/N moved some hair out of her face as she continued to examine his expression, his eyes, his lips. She couldnât tell what had come over her, where this confidence had come from, but here she was, closing in the distance between their lips. Buckyâs eyes saw her gaze flicker towards his lips and the back to his eyes. Were they thinking the same thing?
âAND THEN WHAT?â Sam asked with wide eyes, watching as Bucky paced up and down his room. He was at the very edge of his seat, as if Bucky was retelling the most dramatic story of a lifetime (which he was)
âAnd then nothing!â Bucky groaned, shaking his head. He let out a sound of frustration, kicking at the air.
âWhat do you mean nothing? Sounds like she wanted to kiss you.â Steveâs eyebrow raised in confusion, leaning back into the couch he and Sam were sitting on.
Bucky sighed and after a moment, he finally threw himself onto a nearby chair, âI couldnât do it, Stevie. She just went through a breakup. How is that fair of me to take advantage of her feelings like that?â
âI mean, you couldâve been her rebound.â Sam offered. âAnd then she just so happens to fall in love with you. You two get married, have kids, be disgustingly adorable-â
âThat just sounds like Iâm using her emotions to my advantage. She deserves better than that.â Bucky sighed, putting his head in his hands. âThat was my one chance, wasnât it?â He moped.
âBud, everyone can see that you like each other. Thereâll definitely be another time for it. Maybe when sheâs not dealing with a breakup,â Steve nudged his friend, attempting to be comforting. âItâs only been a few weeks, give it some time.â
âI mean to be fair though, maybe that was her trying to tell you that she likes you and when you didnât kiss her, she took it as you not liking her. I mean she did make the first move,â Sam thought out loud. Steve grabbed the pillow seated next to him and swung it out right beside him, hitting Sam smack in the face, glaring at the now laughing Sam Wilson as Bucky let out a whine.
âDammit!â The dark haired soldier yelled out, his voice echoing into the room, thinking through his options. âThe hell do I do now?â
âWell what happened after you didnât kiss her?â Steve asked as Bucky hit his head against the back of the chair frustratedly.
Bucky sighed and looked over at him, âShe just smiled kinda sadly and said she wanted to go talk to the girls or something.â
âOkay so why donât you ask her if she wants to go get some snacks or something from the grocery store. Do that movie date thing you guys normally do.â Steve shrugged, not at all worried by the situation. He had seen the lovey-dovey glances these two sent each other all the time, and to be honest, he was getting so sick of it. It frequently disturbed meetings, ruined plans on missions, and right now, it was ruining what was supposed to be a peaceful Sunday night. With his luck, this would continue for a long time, so there was so need for his best friend to be worried.
Before Bucky could decide if it was a good plan, there was a knock on the door and Y/N peered in. âBucks?â She blinked, surprised to see the three men sitting around and Bucky looking depressed. âSorry, am I interrupting?â
âNot at all,â Sam smirked. âSorry to hear about Johnny...Mark...Marcus?â He offered, stretching his mind.
âTommy.â Y/N responded with a laugh.
âRight, Tommy... the... doctor?â
âDentist,â Y/N laughed, raising an eyebrow in his direction. âSeems like you put in so much effort to remember my dates, Wilson,â she teased.
âWhat can I say, I just donât think theyâre that memorable compared to other guys,â Sam grinned, wiggling his eyebrows in Buckyâs direction when she wasnât looking. âWell, sorry anyway,â Sam added in with a smile.
âAw, donât be sorry,â (Y/N) shrugged, sighing as she let her thoughts lead her words, âAny boy who breaks up with me over working here, isnât really worth it.â The words spilled out before she could stop herself, smiling brightly until she noticed all the boys turning to look at her with wide eyes. âWhat?â
âHe broke up with you because you work with the Avengers?â Steve frowned tightly. âWhatâs wrong with working with us? Did we do something? Is he one of those guys that doesnât like us?â
âO-Oh-â (Y/N)âs eyes widened, âU-Um like, partially because I work with you guys.â
âWho the hell doesnât like the Avengers?â Sam scoffed. âWhatâs so wrong with working here?â
âI-It wasnât so much working with you guys as it was... you know...living with you.â Y/N admitted nervously, avoiding Buckyâs gaze as she desperately tried to put out a fire she started but only really making things worse. He stared at her hard and she knew it was because he was surprised she hadnât told him this earlier.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â Buckyâs voice was quiet but it sent a little shiver down Y/Nâs spine. Sam and Steve shared a look, attempting to sink back into their seats, twiddling their thumbs.
âItâs not really that important,â Y/N told him quickly. âHe just...got jealous that Iâd be hanging around you guys and that Iâm always with you and that I talk about you all the time and-â
âSo it wasnât so much the Avengers he was jealous of, but...Bucky?â Sam sat up straight as he spoke up, trying to contain the smirk on his face but it was hard. He didnât need any clearer sign than that that these two were pining after each other - even Y/Nâs idiot ex boyfriend could see that. Buckyâs face lit up like a tomato, which made it harder for Sam to contain any laughter.
âI-I mean...â Y/N scattered for a good excuse. Tommy had hated her relationship with Bucky and always felt like he came second to him... he wasnât wrong.
âDid I do something?â Bucky asked nervously, âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to come between you and your relationship-â
âNo no!â Y/N burst out, shaking her head, âPlease donât think like that. Itâs not like this is the first time itâs happened!â She laughed nervously, but the boys were still staring at her. Goddammit, stop talking! she begged herself, letting out a quiet groan when she realized what she had admitted.
Buckyâs heart was falling. So he had been the reason for all those nights she cried and wondered if sheâd ever find love? âItâs happened before?â Bucky asked slowly, shoulders falling. âFuck, how many of your relationships have I ruined?â
âBucky-â Y/N started.
âI think this is our cue to leave,â Sam mumbled, nudging Steveâs arm. The two of them patted (Y/N) on the back before sliding out, Sam sending Bucky a supportive grin and a thumbs up before closing the door behind him.
âHow many?â Bucky asked again, standing up stiffly.
âWhat?â
âHow many times have I ruined a relationship with a person you really liked?â
Y/N swallowed hard, her mind racing as she tried to find the words to explain what it had all been about, âBucky please, itâs not what you think-â
âNot what I think? Youâve been in and out of flings and relationships this whole time and now youâre telling me that this isnât the first one to end because of me? What did I do? Is it because Iâm around you lots?â Bucky looked angry and desperate for answers. Y/Nâs heart broke seeing him like this, unsure of how to explain.
âB-Bucky, please, let me explain-â
âDamn, what kind of friend am I to be in the way of all your relationships? How could you not tell me? You couldâve told me to back off or something! How many of them did you actually like and I fucked it up?â Bucky ranted, his voice raising.
âBucky stop!â Y/N yelled, eyes desperately following him. âI-Itâs not like that. Itâs not just because weâre always together. These guys just get jealous and...and...â Y/N swallowed hard, trying to figure out what to say. Was now a good time to admit all the feelings that were bottled up?
âJealous of what? Of how you spend time with me here? Of how you take care of me? Is it because of who I was? Because of what I did?â Bucky pleaded, begging for answers. Why wouldnât she just tell him the truth? âAll those nights you spent in my room, crying over boys, and it turns out it was just my fault all along-?â
âBucky Barnes, itâs because Iâm in love with you!â (Y/N) yelled out, a desperate attempt to pull him out of spiralling.
Buckyâs eyes shot over to her, wide as he processed her outburst. There was a dead silence as the two of them stared at each other.
âYou what?â His voice was barely louder than a whisper.
Y/N sucked in air, heart pounding against her chest. There was no turning back now. âI-Iâm in love with you, Bucks... and they all knew it. I tried to play it off as them just being jealous of my best friend being a guy but... Iâve always known I was in love with you. Even the girls knew,â she sighed, thinking about how Nat and Wanda were so relieved to finally hear Y/N admit she may have feelings for the soldier.
Bucky suddenly felt incredibly lightheaded. He searched her expression for any sort of sign that she was lying, but she sounded so genuine. âY-You canât,â he told her softly. âNot me.â
(Y/N) felt defeated, her heart was falling every second, âBecause you donât love me back,â She stated softly and Buckyâs eyes looked like they would pop out of his head.
âNo! Of course Iâm in love with you, doll, who the hell wouldnât be?â He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. His shoulders fell from his normally straight posture, eyes dropping to the floor. âMy heartâs been yours since the first time you smiled at me. But what could I give you? Iâm an old man, I donât understand anything you grew up with, anything weâre going through right now. Not to mention the obvious,â he scoffed, closing his eyes slightly. âI couldnât live with myself if one day I snapped back and you were scared of me.â
(Y/N)âs heart was in turmoil. On one hand, he had just admitted he loved her too. Her heart soared at the thought of them being in love, at having a chance to be with her best friend. And then it fell. Bucky was stepping away from her, as if distancing himself would do anything. âI can take care of myself,â she said firmly, frowning at him. âDo you really love me?â
Bucky looked at her with a sad smile, moving to sit on the armrest of the couch. âWith everything this broken body has.â
âThen kiss me,â she demanded, surprising herself with how confident the bold statement sounded.
Bucky stared at her for a moment, his fears and his feelings mixing together. He was in such turmoil, watching as she stepped closer moving to stand between his legs. âDoll, I-â
âDo you not want to?â She asked quietly, watching his eyes. She needed to know how those lips felt on hers, if the spark that she had fantasized about was real.
âOf course I want to-â He insisted, searching her earnest eyes. âBut what if-â
âThen kiss me, Sergeant.â
Bucky watched her for a moment, deciding that this was the one moment that he got. Steve told him that he deserved to be happy, especially after everything that happened. Did he? Did Bucky Barnes, a trained assassin that became a murdering tool deserve to be happy? He stared at this woman standing in front of him, a glow on her skin after such a passionate confession, eyes fiery with confidence and demand.
âFuck,â Bucky muttered to himself. He stood up swiftly, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her to him. And he did it. He kissed her. His lips eagerly pressed against hers, her arms finding their way around his neck in an attempt to pull him closer.
It was everything the two of them had dreamed of and more. Y/N thought about all those people who said you know itâs love when thereâs sparks flying. The comical idea of fireworks off in the background played in her head as his lips moved along hers. It was magical, it was fantastic, it was everything.
The two pulled apart for a moment, eyes fluttering open to see each other, to make sure that this wasnât just a dream, âI really really like you, Bucky Barnes,â Y/N whispered against his lips, pecking them again gently.
Bucky smiled, brushing her hair from her face as he tried to bring himself back to earth. There was no way a girl like this wasnât an angel, he had to have been brought to Heaven or some etherial plane,âI really really really like you too, Y/N Y/L/N.â

Jaune of the Dead II
 -------------- Two Hours earlier ------------
âCâmon Rubes, you canât depressed all day just because youâre imaginary boyfriend ghosted you.â Yang said playfully to Ruby.
âHeâs not imaginary! Heâs taller than dad, blonde, and wears a white trench-coat, I keep telling you this! That the mean Schnee made me blow up, and then he showed up did a glowy thing, and I felt great! Then walked me to the place, and then disappeared like a ghost! Then I found out he supercharged my aura! How do think I could have done so well in Initiation!â Ruby said to her sister rapid-fire.
A tall redhead puts her hand on Rubyâs shoulder. âYou shouldnât sell yourself so short Ruby, accepting your successes is necessary for good mental health, and from what I saw was enough to put some huntsmen to shame.â
Ruby pouts. âYeah, I know! The thing is I canât one shot a Nevermore and fly on my own! The thing is I know how strong I am, and I am not strong enough to do those on my own!â
Yang and Pyrrha sigh.Â
âRuby, câmon youâre awesome! Youâre talented and youâre strong, so stop selling yourself short, wait never-mind that does apply to you.â Yang said with a shit-eating grin.
Rubyâs face was a brilliant red as she started pounding weakly against Yangâs arms. âYannng! I drink milk, Iâll be tall one day!â
âIf you say so, Rosebud.â
Pyrrha watched the exchange with a amused smile, feeling very pleased with her team so far.
She hadnât expected to partner up with a prodigy and her sister, but destiny was full of twists and turns.
Many, many twists, like Yangâs partner and the leader of team BYRN.
Bleiss Schnee.
The notorious Black Sheep of the Schnee household and disowned daughter of Jacque Schnee for reasonâs kept private, though considering what she heard of the man in the day she has known Bleiss, it didnât paint flattering picture why he did what he did.
Who disowned their child based on appearance?
*BZZZ-BZZZ-BZZZZ*
*SNORE-SNORE*
The Black Sheep slept noisily in a dark corner of the room with her limbs thrown all across the bed as she slept under neath a black canopy bed with... her toys all still vibrating under her sheets.
A series of black glyphs floated menacingly around her bed as she slept.
Thankfully the curtains on the side of canopy bed only showed a hazy figure behind the curtains.Â
Bleiss had made her team go out last night to celebrate making it through initiation. They had gone to club after club, well Yang and her did, Pyrrha and Ruby left not feeling comfortable on that scene.
Yang had come back to the dorm alone, as Bleiss wanted to find someone to âBreak her in half while folding her legs over her head,â or to find âA soft little sub to break between her legs.â
Bleiss had somehow come back empty-handed and frustrated.
Then she brought out the toys.
It had been hours before she went to sleep.
She had no idea how Ruby slept through it all, especially Yang screaming bloody murder trying to break her glyphs, which when broken unleashed somesort of insect like grimm that stung Yang without mercy.Â
Pyrrha was one-hundred percent sure that she started moaning louder to annoy Yang.
Thankfully, Ruby seemed to know what was going on. Apparently having walked in on Yang in a private moment before, but she still blushed red at noticing what her leader was doing calling it âFilthy.â
Pyrrha was also sure that it was a fools errand to try and wake her up for class. Bleiss had struck her as the type to have a couple trips up her sleeve. It did make Pyrrha ponder why she needed defenses why she slept though, but following those paths of thought those only led to dark explanations. Bleiss might make it clear one day if they grew close, and maybe, hopefully, it would have a more happy origin.
Bleiss had also made clear as leader of Team BYRN, she would go to class when she damn well felt like it. She had pointed out a loophole in the Beacon Rule book, apparently she could skip class as long as she maintained a 90% average in her classes, she could not be dropped from the classes.Â
A rule that was normally reserved for 3rd and 4th years who often took missions and had spend time recovering and could not attend classes, so were normally given abridged lesson and makeup tests.
Pyrrha had no idea how she going to do it, but sheâd try her best to support her leader.
Pyrrha looked back to her teammates, and hopefully friends.
Yang had gotten Ruby into a headlock and was rubbing her head with her knuckles.
âAh! AH! AH! I yield, I yield!â
âYeah, you do, whoâs the big sister, Iâm the big sister, woo-woo!â
Yang dropped Ruby to the ground, who then started pouting.
Then a look of realization hit her. âSee that proves it!â Pyrrha raised a elegant brow towards Ruby. âProves what?â
âThat I didnât do all that crazy awesome stuff at initiation on my own! If I could Yang wouldnât be able to beat me up like that!â
Pyrrha gave it some thought she had a good point.
Yang flexed her arms. âI donât though, maybe youâre just making it excuses.â
âMaybe you just a big head!â
Yang smirks at Ruby, and then cups her chest. âI got some big somethings!â
âAh, Yang!â
Pyrrha shook her head at her teammates antics, then her internal clock told her they had around ten minutes before class started.
Pyrrha gently clapped her hands together, not loud enough to cause shock, but enough to gain attention.
âAhem, I do believe we have classes soon.â
The sisters looked at each other and then started cleaning themselves up for class.
Ah, she could scarcely imagine the day becoming more interesting.
--- 10 minutes prior ---
Professor Portâs lesson was interesting if veiled behind misdirection. At first Pyrrha had considered that he might be a little self-absorbed, until she started listening closely. He was purposely distracting them with long-winded stories to test their observation skills, which if one actually paid attention to would start to reveal valuable information on Grimm.
Bleissâs twin had also the same class period as them along with her team, SBRN, Saturn. It seemed Weiss went out of her way to ignore all of them expect Pyrrha, offering her hollow praise and empty compliments.
Pyrrha had politely decline her offer to take notes together. Her team seemed nice, but it was clear there was division among-st them.
Weiss then proved to be as superficial as Pyrrha thought, having clearly been taking notes but not understanding the subtext. Prof. Port had to step in once it was clear the Greater Borbatusk was too much for her, itâs armor plating across its back and head, remained unscratched till Prof. Port grabbed it by itâs tusk and flipped it, cutting itâs belly open.
âWell, children let this be a lesson to you all, that if nothing else remember you have room to grow! And to cut a Borbatusk across the belly! HO-Ho-ho!â Despite his cheery demeanor, Pyrrha couldnât help but notice the glint of disappointment in his eyes.
Pyrrha wished she had imagined the pleased look in Weiss partnerâs eyes at her failure, and her teammates apathy towards their leaders failure. What had she done to sow such discontent in her team?
The class was dismissed and they walked to their next class, a new one if rumors were true, one that had been set up merely a day ago before suddenly being added to their schedule.
What, a odd occurrence.
It was hosted by a new teacher too, one Pyrrha had never even heard of, or the seniors if the rumors where true. But, if the rumors were true, which they usually werenât, he was the youngest teacher in Beacon history.
How exciting.
Pyrrha, Ruby, and Yang stood outside the door staring at Weiss with her teammates entering beside her.
âI see my sister is not coming to this class, either.â
âNope.â Yang said popping the p.
Weiss gave them all a haughty look. âFine by me, that noisy harlot is an annoyance anyway.â She gave Pyrrha a fake smile. âItâs not too late to make the best team in Beacon history,â She looked towards the sisters. âI donât mind trading one of mind for her to join.â
Pyrrha felt a flash of anger inside her, that was mirrored on Yangâs face, but she quickly suppressed it. âIâm sorry, but,â She put a hand on Rubyâs shoulder, and gave Yang a winning smile. âI feel Iâm already on Beaconâs best team.â
Weiss scowled and stomped into the classroom.
Yang simmered before tskking. âWhatâs her problem.â
âI sincerely have not idea.â Pyrrha actually did if one did consider what was heard about Jacque Schnee. But, best wait before jumping the gun.
âSheâs shorter than me, she probably mad she doesnât have enough milk.â Ruby said seriously.
A snorting laugh echoed out of Yang and Pyrrha.
Pyrrha wiped a tear out of her eye.
Yang laughed. âYeah, I bet she doesnât have enough milk!â Yang said giving Pyrrha a knowing nod.
âIâm glad you two understand the power of milk!â Ruby said going into the classroom.
Pyrrha and Yang followed in after Ruby, and where momentarily amazed by the interior of the classroom.
It was bigger on the inside, with shelves of books covering the walls, diagrams and maps covering the walls, not an inch of the room was bare. Where there were not diagrams and books, where glass-cases, and various objects, ranging from swords, glass shards, skeletons, and weird objects that Pyrrha couldnât hope to identify.
This did not look like the work of a day or two, this room looked as though it had been used for years!
âWow, impressive.â Yang said from beside her. Then she scowled. âUh-oh, looks like we got trouble this period.â She said elbowing Pyrrha to get her attention to nod towards a group of people even Pyrrha had no tolerance for.
Team VMMP; Vampire.
Vernal Wennbar
Milita Malachite
Melanie Malachite
Neo Politan.
A team of thugs and low-lifers that had somehow managed to get into Beacon.Â
Who, unfortunately had real skill to back up their attitude.
Yang squinted her eyes. âSomething is off about them tho,â
Pyrrha had to blink thought to make sure they were the same team, though.
They were so quiet, and actually dressed for class.
Was.. Was Vernal wearing makeup?
No, she must be imagining things.
Pyrrha decided to ignore them and go sit with Ruby, Yang following behind her.
Then they waited, the class deathly quiet.Â
Team VMMP unusually quiet had been more than enough to cow the others into silence.
6 minutes passed.
5 minutes passed.
4 minutes passed.
and soon it would be only one minute before class started.
Their teacher, who ever it might be, hadnât appeared yet.
Then came the sound.
*Clack-Clack-Clack*
Of heavy shoes rhythmic hitting the floor.
It had started near the edge of their hearing, sounding as if it was coming from across the school. Only for it to grow louder and louder, becoming more noticeable till it was evident it was coming towards them.
10:00.
He entered exactly as the 9:59 went to 10:00, right on time.
A head of long, messy, blonde hair came through the doorway, the hair easily coming to his mid-back. His face sharp and judgmental, but looking handsome in a imperious way. Two deep blue bloodshot eyes scanned the room as he went in, underneath his eyes were deep black bags, that spoke of a lack of sleep.
His body language tense and wary, not that much of his body could be seen as hit was covered by a billowy white leather duster, which opened to reveal stained, faded, well worn, and stitched up work clothes and pair of heavy duty work boots.
A sheathed sword on his belt.
Thatâs not what drew Pyrrhaâs attention to him though, no it was her semblance. He was wearing metal gauntlets too over his hands and had some sort of metal armor underneath his clothes or maybe worked into them.
He was also wearing five necklaces, had a dozen rings, and had nearly twenty pounds of things, Pyrrha couldnât imagine what, stuffed into his pockets. And that was just metal! It wouldnât surprise her if he had more in there made of other materials.
Why did he have all those things?
She then heard Rubyâs breath hitch. âThatâs him!â Ruby whispered to her and Yang.
Before she cold react he spoke.
It was not what she expected.
It was quiet, very quiet, tired too, like he had just woken up. His voice was deep, but raspy like he had a cold. But it commanded attention and impossible to ignore as within its core was a razor thin edge of Power. Of something that made his voice make her her shiver and alert to him.
âHe is dangerous,â Something insider her warned.
âMy name is Jaune Arc, I am eighteen years old, and I will teach you all the inâs and outâs of advanced aura manipulation, Soul Theory, and defense against the Paranormal. Any questions?â

9 years and 360 days ago
-----------------
Little Jaune Arc was on his own.
He didnât get it.
He told his parents, but they laughed at him and told him everything was fine. There was no scary lady in his closet.
He told them again. They laughed again.
He told them everyday, but they werenât laughing anymore, they were mad.Â
They said if he kept making up stories for attention theyâd ground him.
When he asked if he could sleep in their room, they said he was a big boy and had to sleep in his room.
Jaune stopped talking to his parents on the fourth day. They hadnât even gone into his room. It was like that with everyone though, no one seemed to believe him, or want to go near his room!
Alicia was out hunting and out of Scroll range.
He tried Saphron and his elder sisters, but they were too busy for him. Saphron was always talking to Terra. And told him to get more creative if he wanted attention from her. Terra just laughed at him.
June was always on her scroll, and told him to buzz off.
Daisy wanted to watch tv or to paint, and told him he was distracting her, or be a model for her.
Jazz would just turn her music up till he left, or drag him into dancing.
Grace would just make him work in the garden with her, but everything he said went in one ear and out the other.
And the Rachel?Â
She is too young, couldnât even walk yet.
He vented to them anyway. That was a new phrase he learned. He also learned what a phrase was at school.
âI donât get it,â He said to his youngest sibling. âthey wonât take me seriously! I keep asking and asking them to just wait till a storm hits and stay with me, but they just keep laughing, getting mad, or ignoring me!â
Little Jaune Arc grabbed his hair with both hands.
âItâs so annoying! Why is this happening?â
Rachel just played with her toys, pretending to drive a car.
A glint appeared in Jauneâs eyes.
He started playing too.Â
He sighed though.Â
âWhat should I do, what should I do?â He repeated to himself.
âI tried to get them to look at the window, but they keep ignoring it, I tried showing them my scars and they said they were from playing in the woods, itâs like everything I say is just being ignored.â
Jaune rolled the toy car back and forth.
Rachel bumped her car into his, pinching Jauneâs finger inbetween the metal.
A light white glow appeared on his hand.
Jaune looked at his finger in wonder.
He focused on it and tried to force the feeling back out.
Nothing happened.
Jaune frowned and looked at his hand.
He grabbed a toy car and slammed at his pinky.
A warm feeling engulfed his pinky as a white light block the car, the car bouncing off of it.
He tried to imagine it being warm again.
A faint white light ghosted over his finger, before dying.
âHmm,â He looked at his finger. âI have no idea what I just did,â He looked at Rachel. âbut, you helped.â He gave Rachel a kiss on the forehead. âThanks sis, I donât know if you can understand me, but thanks anyway.â
Rachel looked at him with baby blues and gave a toothy smile and giggled.
âYou want to keep playing?â

Une Rose Pour Toi
Thank you to CoffeeBanana for betaing. Written for Day 3: Dirt of Marichat May. Can also read on AO3. @marichatmay
Marinette waved to Alya as her best friend took her sisters back home so that she could leave her sisters with Nora and get to her date with Nino.
"It was nice to get ice cream with Alya," Tikki piped up, making Marinette giggle.
"I'm sure you thought so," She teased her kwami, making Tikki giggle. There was no end to Tikki's sweet tooth and they both knew it. "Come on, let's take the shortcut through the park."
They were halfway across the park when Marinette noticed something rather peculiar. "Why is everyone staring over there?" People were watching and whispering to each other about something that was happening in the farthest part of the park.
"I don't know but we'd better check it out!" Tikki responded and Marinette nodded back at her resolutely. She quickly ran to see what was so curious, only to stop and stare herself.
"Chat Noir?" Marinette's jaw dropped. The feline superhero was digging holes in the darkest corner of the park, shovel in hand. He paused to look up at her, a grin overtaking his face when he saw her.
"Marinette!" He waved excitedly before pausing. "Um, hello civilian. What are you doing here?"
Marinette resisted the urge to roll her eyes. What was the point of calling her a civilian after he'd already called her by name? "I'm heading home, what are you doing with that shovel?"
Chat Noir looked between her and the shovel, seeming nervous.
"Don't tell me you're here to collect some squirrel you buried," Marinette joked, making Chat Noir laugh out loud.
"It's a bird, actually," he whispered conspiratorially. "It's a present for Ladybug, you think she'll like it?"
Marinette was torn between laughing and groaning. "It better not be a pigeon, you wouldn't want to deal with Mr. Pigeon again," she decided to joke back.
"I like you, Marinette. You're clawfully amewsing," he complimented.
"Two puns in one sentence? You clearly take the whole cat thing very seriously." Chat bowed to her and Marinette shook her head. "Don't think I don't realize you're trying to distract me. What are you actually up to?"
Chat hesitated before sighing. "Oh, alright. I'll tell you since you were the only one brave enough to ask." He moved over to reveal a row of plants. "Rose bushes, I've always wanted a garden of my own."
"I didn't know cats could keep gardens," Marinette joked, her eyes still on the plants. "Why roses?"
"I'll have you know that cats are expert gardeners," Chat Noir sniffed. He bent down to run his fingers across one of the leaves of the rose bush. "As for why the roses," Chat bit his lip, clearly looking for a way out of telling her.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," Marinette told him. She didn't want to pressure him into revealing his secrets to her.
He gave her a soft smile before shaking his head. "No, if it's you then I don't mind saying it." Marinette blinked before moving closer to Chat and laid a hand on his shoulder. She was privately quite touched that her civilian self had made such a good impression on Chat that he was willing to put so much trust in her.
"These are my mother's favourite flowers, you see. I wanted to plant them in her memory. You see, I'm not really allowed to spend time in the garden at home, but I really wanted to be the one who takes care of them."
"Oh, Chat, that is so sweet of you," Marinette flung her arms around Chat Noir, trying to provide him with as much comfort and support as she could.
"Thanks, Marinette." Chat sent her another smile and Marinette would deny it to the ends of the Earth, but in that moment, her heart skipped a beat. She let go of him and turned around, only to almost fall into one of the holes Chat Noir had dug.
"Woah!" She teetered on the edge, managing to get her balance just in time. "Chat! Why are these holes so big?" She squatted to see just how wide it was and was even more surprised to see how deep the hole was. "These are for planting bushes? This is almost 30 cm deep!"
"Yeah?" Chat sounded puzzled. "Why what's wrong? Isn't this how you're supposed to do it?"
Marinette stared at him. "Um...have you ever gardened before?" Chat shook his head, looking completely lost.
"You decided to plant several rose bushes by yourself without researching or anything when you've never done it before?" Chat Noir looked down for a moment before giving her a pleading look, clearly asking for help. Marinette bit her lip before sighing. "Oh, alright. I'll help."
Chat gave a sigh of relief. "Thanks! You're really doing your good seed of the day!"
Marinette rolled her eyes at him. "Herb your enthusiasm, you'll have to do everything I say." Chat Noir looked delighted at her pun and gave her a mock salute. "Now, fill those holes in about halfway."
"Are you sure?" Chat frowned at her.
Marinette responded by putting her hands on her hips and leaning towards him. "I'm sorry, between the two of us, who has the most experience in gardening?" Wisely, Chat Noir stopped arguing and began to do as Marinette ordered.
Marinette allowed herself a victory smirk before she got to work, helping Chat make the holes an appropriate depth.
"Okay, since you really want to do this yourself, I'll show you how to do one and you can do the rest. Is that okay with you?"
Chat Noir nodded eagerly. "Thistle be the best rose bushes ever," he declared.
"Of course, we're rooting for them," Marinette said, carefully peeling the plants away from the plastic pots they were bought in.
"You're becoming a real punner, Marinette! I'm so proud," Chat pretended to wipe away a tear.
"Well, you know what they say, If you can't beet them, join them," Marinette shrugged.
"You can call us the puns 'n' roses now," Chat continued. Marinette shook her head at him.
"C'mon, let's get this done. You can pun more later." Chat nodded, obviously planning on holding her to it. He watched carefully as she placed the rose bush into one of the holes they had dug and covered it with the leftover soil.
Then she watched as he did the same with other roses. Soon enough, all of the roses had been planted. "Now we just have to water them."
"Lucky us, then. I think it's going to rain soon." Chat pointed towards the growing storm clouds. He beamed at Marinette as he rested his weight on the shovel. "Garden, you glad we're done? Just in thyme, too."
"This was fun, Chat Noir. Thanks for letting me help," Marinette smiled at him warmly.
"No, thank you, Marinette. You really rose to the occasion." Gesturing at her to wait, he turned to get something out of a bag. He turned back around to her with a single white rose in hand. "For you."
Marinette had spent some time researching the meaning of roses after Chat had gone on about finding the perfect colour for her as Ladybug. She knew perfectly well that a single white rose represented love and respect.
"You're awesome, Marinette. I'm glad to have spent the day with you," Chat smiled, taking her hand and enclosing the rose in it. Marinette was floored.
"There's no one I'd have rather spent the day planting roses with, Chat Noir." She leant forward to press a quick kiss to his cheek, before waving goodbye at him.
Chat stared at her for a moment before waving back. Marinette bit back a grin as she turned around.
"That was interesting," Tikki giggled at her from her purse.
Marinette smiled warmly at her kwami as it began to drizzle. "It most certainly was, Tikki."

Warnings: some swearing

---------------------------
Kuroo
You both had planned this trip to the beach over a week ago; picking a day that you were both free and knew the weather would be great. This was to be a day for both of you to have fun and relax. Of course the entire team were invited to really make the most of the day, they needed the chance to unwind too.
When you all arrived at the beach and set up your own area to hang out and start having fun you blinked in surprise to see most of the guys strip down to their swimming trunks and make a beeline for one of the free beach volleyball nets while shouting out who would be on which team. Kuroo didnât even give you a second look, his eyes set solely on the net. It wasnât that you minded him playing it was the fact that he didnât ask you to join them. Hell you would have taken a quick kiss on the cheek before he sprinted off, a sign that he hadnât forgotten your presence was all you wanted. Â Â
Glancing back you saw Kenma perched on one of the beach chairs, heâd changed too but obviously had no interest in playing volleyball. His eyes were trained on the game console in hand. You didnât want to disturb him and looked over to smirk as Yaku had wasted no time in deciding flirting with some girls would be more fun and you felt your presence would probably throw him off. Not wanting to spoil the mood you pulled off your tank top and shorts to show the red bikini with white polka dots you were wearing underneath.
Grabbing the sarong from your bag you tied it around your waist only now noticing that Kenmaâs game was silent you looked to see your boyfriendâs best friend staring at you, a small dusting of pink on his cheeks which you pretended not to notice. âNot that he will but if Kuroo asks, Iâve gone for a walk.â You said dropping your sunglasses from your head to settle over your eyes as you began to walk along the warm sand in the opposite direction of Kuroo.
When they stopped for a break the guys went to one of the coolers brought and grabbed a drink. By now Yaku had returned from his flirting and had been sunbathing while Kenma hadnât budged from his seat. Only now did Kuroo spot what was wrong with the picture. With a frown he looked around, eyes drifting to the water in case youâd gone for a swim. âShe went for a walk.â Kenma spoke up, not needing to look away from his screen to know what was going through his best friendâs mind. âShe told me to tell âKurooâ if he asked.â The others winced and Kuroo felt nervous. Youâd been together for so long that you only ever called him by his last name if you were annoyed at him.
Then from a short distance away they all heard cheering and your name. All attention turned in the direction of the commotion. Their eyes widened, jaws dropping in unison as they saw you in your bikini for the first time. To make things worse they watched your lithe form diving to successfully receive the ball spiked towards your side of the net and you hit the sand with a laugh. Your receive let your teammate deliver the winning spike and your game was finished. Kuroo tore his gaze from you to the spectators-mostly male he noted- eyeing you and he felt his eye twitch. Then you had to let one of them help pull you to your feet, his fingers lingering on your arm just a little too long for his liking. You laughed at something the guy had said and you looked down at your sand dusted form. Innocently you removed the sarong from your waist and shook off the sand before using it to wipe the remnants on your skin all while your admirers watched intently.
Unable to hold back anymore he crossed the sand closing in on you. At his approach you lowered your sunglasses to look over the rim at him. âAh Kuroo, this is Sato, Ikeda, and Hara.â You introduced with a beaming smile. âThey were so kind to invite me to play with them when they saw me on my own, wasnât that nice of them?â Your tone was playful and light but Kuroo swiftly felt the sharpness of your point, the jealousy heâd felt brewing was now mixing with the stronger sense of guilt.
âThanks for keeping her company guys,â he said not looking anywhere but you. Swiftly he took the sarong from your loosened grasp and draped it around your shoulders before pulling you close against his chest. His lips captured yours insistently. He would admit part of it was to make a point to the admirers who might have had deluded themselves into thinking you were single but mostly his kiss was to show you how much he loved you. âHow âbout some one on one time? You can call me a dumbass the whole time.â âOh Tetsu, you are a dumbass.â You laughed out before pressing a quick kiss on his lips âbut youâre my dumbass.â You added as you ducked under his arm as you started walking back to the rest of the Nekoma team, allowing him a full view of you in your bikini as he gave chase.
Bokuto
The trip was like everything with Bokuto, spontaneous. The sun was out, you were both free so it was decided the day would be spent with the beach. As you got your stuff together you heard Bokuto on the phone to the rest of the Fukurodani team and the managers to tell them where to meet you. Your excitement at the prospect of it just being you and Bokuto did deflate a little but as you listened to him ramble about how awesome it was going to be with everyone your mood picked up quickly once more. Â
While the guys went to find a place on the beach for you all, you and the two managers went to change into your swimsuits. When you emerged the two girls squealed; being so unused to Bokutoâs quieter half dressed the way you were. Immediately you became self-conscious and bit your lower lip looking down at the black bikini decorated with a golden feather pattern. It showed off your form perfectly but now you wondered should you go back and change. However both girls grabbed you hands and dragged you out into the sunshine in search of the guys.
By the time you, Yukie, and Kaori arrived the three of you had already amassed an interested following. Mostly it was just long appreciative stares but on the walk some did try to approach but the two managers were quick to brush them off as they kept their arms looped through yours protectively. âHey, hey, hey!â Yukie called out playfully when she spotted the guys already playing with a volleyball, passing it idly from one to the other. At the signature call they all looked over. Bokutoâs golden eyes widened along with his grin when he saw you, shamelessly looking your bikini and your exposed skin. He was the luckiest guy on earth, he seriously wondered sometimes how he managed to get a girl like you but so long as you were happy to be with him he wasnât going to question it.
However Bokutoâs focus being solely on you meant he failed to spot all of the looks aimed your way from strangers on the beach. Well he noticed a few stares but to him that was natural, you were gorgeous why wouldnât you get looked at? What he truly failed to pick up on was the true meaning behind the stares and before that could become apparent Konoha challenging the others to a chicken fight distracted him. Eyes shining, Bokuto grabbed your hand and grinned at you excitedly. âWant to play babe? Together we canât lose!â
âIâll play later,â you promised with a large smile, your previous nervousness about how you were dressed had melted away. âI want to soak up as much sun as I can first. You go on though.â That was all Bokuto needed to hear. After giving you a kiss he turned and bolted down towards the sea with the others wanting to play while shouting he was going to win. Laughing at his antics you settled onto the beach chair to read the book you brought and enjoy the sunâs warmth.
Unfortunately other people had very different ideas. Even with some of the guys playing nearby and Kaori and Yukie lounging in their seats on either side of you, guys still approached in the hopes of flirting with you, inviting you to go get a drink or snack, or wanting to know if you wanted to go for a walk or swim with them. Kind as ever you let each person down, your friends letting you handle yourself knowing only to step in should things take a turn. Thankfully everyone seemed understanding enough and left without much hassle.
On the one hand it was nice to be complimented but when it was incessant, each new approach chipped away at your relaxed, cheerful mood to the point you felt tense and on edge just waiting for the next âexcuse meâ or not-so subtle clearing of a throat to get your attention. Grumbling to yourself you snapped your book shut no longer able to immerse yourself in the story and fished out your mp3 player. Headphones in and music playing you got comfy and closed your eyes already hidden by your sunglasses. Why hadnât you done this sooner?
Down by the sea Bokuto hadnât witnessed any of the attention you were getting but the others did to the point they started to make it their main line of conversation. At first Bokuto thought it was their strategy to distract him enough so they could win against him. âCan you blame people from wanting to talk to her? Sheâs funny and beautiful. Sheâs the best!â âI donât think talking is all these guys have on their mindâŠâ Akaashi finally spoke up and when he heard his best friendâs insistence that they were telling him the true he took it a little more seriously all the while trying to ignore the twisting in his stomach. âLook she can handle herself. Sheâs stronger than other people give her credit for.â He stated with a final shove against Konoha, sending him toppling off Komiâs shoulders and into the water. His victory cheer was cut short when he heard two guys talking as they walked by.
âUgh, what I wouldnât give to have a girl like that!â one told his friend who nodded solemnly. âThink her boyfriend was one of the ones close by?â âPossibly, maybe thatâs why she said no so quickly. When they leave we could try again with her?â âGood idea!â the friend grinned before sighing wistfully. âUntil then I have the memory of seeing her in her black bikini up close.â
Bokuto sprang into action faster than the others anticipated; sprinting up the beach he stopped beside your chair and in one effortless movement he scooped you and the towel you were lying on into his arms. You squealed in surprise and opened your eyes to see Bokuto lie down on the chair and settle you and the towel over him.
Both of you settled into a comfy position, your head tucked under his chin while he had one arm around you, his hand resting on your thigh while you absently played with the fingers of his other. âYou win baby?â you asked with a content hum. A grin spread on your lips when his pressed against your head. âDamn right I did.â
Semi
The beach had been your idea and Semi jumped at the chance. He couldnât wait to have you to himself for once. Heâd only recently noticed that his team would always be around you both. Yes, they couldnât help that you liked to watch their practices but outside of that and school? Some of them were there hanging out too. One person in particular that was always there was Ushijima.
Normally he wouldnât mind as he never saw Ushijima as a threat against his already established relationship but it wasnât until Tendou pointed out how you and the ace interacted that he finally saw it.
Honestly how had he not seen the glaringly obvious sooner? You were the only one that Ushijima smiled at. You were a naturally affectionate person to begin with but Ushijima would reciprocate your affection when it went his way. You both even had some sort of inside jokes that he and no one else got. Seriously to an outsider it would look like you and Ushijima were the couple. Deep down Semi felt that made more sense. You and the ace of the academy were tenâs, he on the other hand felt like a six on a good day. Â
âHey sweetie guess what?â you grinned snapping him out of his thoughts as he got out of the car to see you looking at your phone. âToshi and the rest of the team found out we were heading here today and want to join in on the fun!â âTheyâre crashing another date?â Semi asked a little too harshly making your smile fall slightly. He took a long deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. It wasnât your fault. You hadnât invited them but he would bet money that when they asked if they could come you said yes without any hesitation. Rubbing the back of his neck he muttered a sharp âwhateverâ and stepped onto the sand.
By the time the team arrived and found you both they could feel the tension. When asked what was wrong you could only shrug while Semi insisted that everything was fine. You scowled at that, knowing it was a blatant lie but said nothing. When it had been just the two of you, youâd tried to get Semi to open up to you and tell you what was bothering him but he refused to the point he lost his temper and shouted at you. You blinked suddenly when Ushijima stood in front of you, eyeing you seriously. âWant to go swim? Iâm surprised you havenât gone near the water yet since you love it so much.â
You failed to notice Semiâs clenched fist at the invitation and display that once again Ushijima knew something about you that he didnât. With a smile and nod you stood and undid the tie of your dress, letting it hit the sand as you stood out of it revealing to everyone the deep purple bikini with black straps. Semiâs face burned and his eyes widened at the sight and watched as you headed to the water with Ushijima by your side, everyone watching you go as you passed by. âNow do you want to talk about it?â Tendou sang innocently at him.
It wasnât long before he heard your laughter and his sharp brown eyes finally took in the scene with a hardened glare. Ushijima was holding you in the air, his hands shamelessly on your waist before he lifted you into the air and let you cannonball into the water. When you broke through the surface of the water with a grin he could hear you chanting âhigher Toshi!â It pained and angered him to see you so joyful and carefree because of someone else. Why couldnât you see what was bothering him so badly? Oh right because you werenât a mind reader.
Just as he stood to go and talk to you rationally he saw Ushijima move his hands from your waist to your thighs to lift you out of the water and place you to stand on his shoulder. Jealousy spiking and patience snapping Semi growled and charged down to water. âWakatoshi!â he called out tightly when you broke through the waterâs surface. Your smile fell and you looked at your boyfriend warily. Ushijima stared at his friend. âTendou wants you.â was all he said. Not questioning the statement, Ushijima nodded and left the water.
When he was gone Semi looked at you still tense and riled up. âWhy am I not good enough for you?â he asked and you had to check your ears for any water in case youâd misheard him. âIta what is wrong with you?â you demanded stepping out of the water to stand in front of him, arms crossed against your soaked chest. âWhatâs made you think youâre not good enough? Why are you being so pissy about our friends hanging out? Theyâve been this way since we got together and that was months ago. Why is it suddenly bugging you that they have no sense of personal space?â âYou definitely donât mind âToshiâ and his lack of personal spaceâŠâ you blinked at your boyfriendâs accusation and you couldnât help but laugh. âDonât.â he whispered, the last thing he wanted was to be laughed at for feeling lesser.
He flinched when you stepped closer, your body against his as you cupped his face to make him look you in the eyes. Semi saw your adoration for him shining and it was only made clearer when you hugged him tightly. âIdiot. I only laughed because Toshi is my cousin.â Semi reeled back and stared at you in bewilderment. âI know Toshi wouldnât think to say we were related but I thought Tendou had already told you.â Semi was going to kill that red-headed monster but you pressed a kiss against his clenched jaw.
âI only have eyes for you. You know youâre sexy when youâre jealousâŠâ you hummed against his skin, smirking when his hands trailed over your back and down to your hips. âSpeaking of sexyâŠâ Semi uttered with a smirk of his own against your lips. âIâm loving the bikini.â With a grin he grabbed you and threw you over his shoulder before wading waist high into the water and throwing you in as you screamed out with laughter. Â
Oikawa
âOi why are the ones who invited us here the last to arrive?â Iwaizumi asked, his eyes narrowing in on Oikawa as he walked towards him. His head tilted curiously when he was his best friend and biggest annoyance in life was approaching the team alone. His posture was relaxed so he doubted she was far behind. Oikawa gave his best friend his usual playful smile as he took one of the free seats.
âThe best looking people have to make the best entrances, Iwa.â He stated as if it was the obvious answer before he looked around the group with a smirk. âSo who was the first to arrive?â a swift hit to the head with a clenched fist was answer enough. As he began to chat casually with his team he frowned when Kindaichi started to choke on his own words. He stared at his junior as his face turned red and eyes widened. Kunimi followed his friendâs stare and his usually bored expression took on one similar to the stuttering boy.
Slowly the others stopped their own conversations to see what the fuss was about and Iwaizumi cleared his throat while Hanamaki let out a low chuckle, clapping Oikawa on the back. âWell for once you were right. The best looking definitely make the best entrances.â Oikawa barely took in his words as he stared at you approaching, looking like the goddess you were. His eyes roamed over the aqua blue bikini adorning your body, when you were settling into the space on the seat heâd made for you to sit against him he noted the white outline of stars on the fabric.
Noting that the others were still staring at you he pouted and threw his arms around you in a playful display of possession. âGo get your own girls.â He taunted at them while sticking out his tongue at his friends while you laughed at your boyfriendâs antics.
âNooo keep staring!â you pleaded with the boys while cuddling into Oikawaâs hold. âItâs so rare to see Toru jealous even if he is pretending. Makes a nice change from it being me all the time.â You grinned up at your boyfriend who stared at you blankly. âThatâs ridiculous, you shouldnât feel that way. Donât you trust me?â he asked trying to lighten the mood and you arched an eyebrow at him. Was he serious? âOf course I trust you.â You said sitting up straighter and moving so his hold around you wasnât so tight. âToru think about how many times your fangirls have swarmed you and Iâve had to smile and watch and say nothing. I do that because I trust you. Think about how many waitresses have flirted with you when weâve been out and I left the table for a second. How many numbers have been slipped to you when they think I was gone long enough. Iâve pretended not to see that or you trying to get rid of the paper before I come back into view because I trust you.â
You started to get upset as you slowly got to your feet. âI bet if you walked ten steps on this beach some girl would come and bat her eyelashes at you. I know itâs going to happen and I know youâll let them down because we love each other and I trust you completely but donât you dare imply that my feelings are ridiculous.â Roughly you ran your hand through your hair and looked at the rest of the group who looked awkward and stared at anywhere that wasnât you or a gobsmacked Oikawa. âSorry for ruining the mood guys. Iâm going to get some ice cream.â You mumbled before walking away.
Before he could wallow his chair was roughly kicked out from under him. Wincing he glared at Iwaizumi who glared back at him ferociously. âIDIOT! GO AFTER HER!â He shouted hauling his clueless best friend to his feet. âSheâs better looking than you at the best of time. Every guy on this beach will have been eyeing her up since she arrived.â âAdd in that bikiniâŠâ Hanamaki added with pursed lips. âAnd the fact that sheâs upset and aloneâŠâ Matsukawa dealt the finishing blow and Oikawa took off after you.
You didnât get very far before the first group of guys came into your space and Oikawa saw as they all smiled at you and talked gesturing to the small space theyâd previously been sitting at. He saw how you shook your head and wiped your eyes. One tried to step closer and put a hand out to you but you swiftly stepped out of his reach and firmly shook your head again before walking away.
Oikawa glared at the group as they continued to watch your retreating figure. Sharply he clicked his tongue and continued after you, closing the distance because of course you were dragged into a conversation by someone. Thankfully it was just one guy this time, definitely less intimidating to you than the group that had practically encircled you. Sadly though this guy had only one thing on his mind and Oikawa could see that from the way he looked at you, trying to be subtle about where his gaze would linger before returning it to your face. He was still a little ways away so couldnât swoop in and rescue you. All he could do was watch you shaking him off politely before you continued on your way. Through all these interactions you were slowly becoming angrier that you couldnât just get some ice cream.
Then you stopped when you heard the wailing. Looking down you gasped to see youâd ruined a little boyâs sandcastle. Forgetting everything else you knelt down to apologise and help the boy build a bigger and better castle. By now Oikawa was a few feet away and watched you give the boy a high five when the castle was finished. Even this little snake was after you and Oikawa watched as the boy kissed your cheek with a grin.
Jealousy already boiling in his skin from being unable to save you previously this was the last straw and he appeared scooping you into his arms as he stared in triumph at his confused and much younger opponent. âIf youâre looking for a Queen for your castle shorty look somewhere else.â He teased the boy while holding you close against his chest. Immediately you sensed the difference in your boyfriendâs declaration and the way he held you compared to earlier. This wasnât playful, this time he was deadly seriously. âThis oneâs taken.â He said as he carried you away and towards the snack stand. âNever thought itâd be a six year old thatâd make you jealousâŠâ you said with a small sigh as he set you on your feet but kept a firm hand around your waist as you walked. âWas all the others too.â Oikawa grumbled surprising you. âIâm sorry I was so dismissive of your feelings. Jealousy is the worst.â âYou were right though, while it doesnât go away fully it does help when you know you can trust the other completely to say no...and rescue you when needed.â Â

loving you is a double-edged sword

âââââââââ
Sasha quietly made her way through the Plantarsâ house, trying not to think too much about how cozy it looked, compared to the prison sheâd lived in during her first few weeks at Toad Tower. The interior seemed more sturdy, and the rooms well lit, so the chances of there being a water leakage or a cold draft at night - which Sasha absolutely hated - were probably slim.
Not only that, but she could tell that whoever built this place did so out of love and determination to have somewhere they could call their own, no matter how much it cost them (a lot, apparently, since the floor tiles were mismatched and some bits of the furniture looked well past their prime. Although, she supposed that made it all the more unique).
It mustâve been nice for Anne, staying here.
Focus, Sasha, she reminded herself. You didnât come here to act all sappy. Letâs just get this over with.
Once she finally reached the basement, however, any urge sheâd had to suppress her feelings flew out the window.
The familiarity of it all - from the posters and stickers on the wall to the scrapbooks, stationery and clothing strewn all over the floor - was enough to nearly bring a tear to her eye. It felt as though sheâd been transported back home, back to the times when her and Marcy would drop by Anneâs house to do homework and catch up on Suspicion Island (though not always in that order).
The guilt ate away at her for a moment, until she remembered what Grime had said to her earlier; âWhatever youâre dealing with, you need to confront it. Now go into that house and face what burdens you.â
Suddenly Sasha heard a scuffing sound from beneath her. Looking down, she realised that sheâd accidentally stepped on something - a notepad, the front page slightly curled at the corner and smeared in dirt.
Picking it up to inspect it, she spotted a sticker on the cover with Anneâs name written on it, just above the word âjournalâ. For a split second, Sasha considered leaving it, turning around and walking right out of this place. It was her friendâs, after all. Besides, who was she to go snooping through someone elseâs things, especially after all sheâd done?
Sasha glanced down at the journal, then opened it and began hastily flicking through the pages. Maybe, just maybe, it could give her the closure sheâd been looking for, as crazy as it sounded. It wasnât like she had much left to lose anyway.
When her eyes landed on a drawing that looked awfully familiar, she paused and left the journal open on that page.
The drawing was of her, Anne and Marcy, all in their outfits from the Battle of the Bands contest. Plus, in the bottom corner, there was a sketch of Grime playing the harp with a broad grin on his face. It had all been meticulously coloured in, and Anne had even added some stars and flowers to fill the blank spaces. The lengths sheâd clearly gone to to get everything right warmed Sashaâs heart.
She then turned her attention to the accompanying journal entry, skimming over it several times until the words had sunk in:
Sasha, Marcy and I are finally together. And you know what? Itâs AWESOME!!! Tomorrow, we head to Newtopia, and after that, I think weâre actually going home! :)
Iâm so happy I trusted Sasha again. I always knew, even after everything that happened, weâd work it out âĄ
At first Sasha didnât notice the tears streaming down her cheeks, until she saw a fresh droplet on the page of Anneâs journal that hadnât been there before. Slowly, she closed it and lowered her head.Â
âOh, Anne, Iâm so sorry,â she managed to choke out between sobs, âI shouldnât have tried so hard to be in control again. In the end⊠where did it get me?â
A brief silence followed. Sasha inhaled deeply and blinked back any remaining tears.
Now was the time, she decided, to bring about change. She knew that she had to make things better, to make herself better, if she wanted a chance at reconciling with Anne. Starting with coming clean to the townsfolk.
Feeling a new sense of determination, she straightened her posture and walked out of the basement. âI can do this,â she whispered, ignoring her trembling hands. âI can do this.â
âââââ
When she saw Anne again for the first time, Sasha had no idea what to do with herself. She felt like screaming, crying and laughing all at once because oh my God itâs her itâs Anne sheâs actually here-
She ended up doing none of those things. Instead she stood still in disbelief, as did Anne, while they looked each other up and down and tried to process everything.
ââŠSasha?â Anne eventually said, breaking the silence.
âAnneâŠâ Sasha gasped, her voice breaking slightly, as she took a hesitant step forward. The two slowly approached one another, until there was just a few inches between them. Anne paused, then carefully placed a hand on Sashaâs shoulder and looked down at her feet.
âSo⊠Iâm back.â She said, trying her best to seem cheery although her voice came out rather deflated.
Sasha nodded and clasped her hands behind her back. âYup, youâre back.â
âI, uh- Iâm glad youâre okay.â Anne murmured before sneaking a glance up at Sasha through her bangs.
âYeah,â Sasha coughed, positive that she was now blushing, âIâm glad youâre okay too.â
Although neither girl was willing to admit it, the rift between them was still very obvious; it hung over them like a raincloud on an overcast day, determined to make itself known.
If she were to be totally honest, Sasha didnât think she was ready to open up about how she felt - there was so much that needed to be said, but she had no idea on where to begin. Apparently Anne felt the same way, because all she did was give Sasha a feeble nod before marching on past her toward the Plantarsâ house.
âââââ
Sasha wasnât naive - sheâd known it wouldnât be easy to regain Anneâs trust. But that didnât make the awkward, stuck-in-limbo phase they were currently going through any less painful.
Every time sheâd overhear Anne laughing in the next room, only for her to fall silent the second Sasha walked in, every time theyâd lock eyes for a few seconds until one of them looked away, just added insult to injury.
âŠWhich was how Sasha came to find herself outside the barn one sunny but rather cold morning, pacing back and forth as she scrambled to think of what sheâd say to Anne, how sheâd go about it, and whether or not she should have thought this all through.
Just a few minutes earlier, sheâd pulled Anne aside by the arm and whispered a frantic âMeet me in ten outsideâ in her ear, before disappearing off to throw on something warm. What she hadnât done was wait and see if Anne actually decided to go through with her offer (well, it was more of an urgent demand).
She groaned and buried her face in her hands. She was so going to regret doing this-
âHey Sasha.â
She jumped out of her skin when she heard someone speak behind her, but was relieved when she saw it was just Anne.
Just Anne. Her childhood friend, who sheâd backstabbed multiple times and who would probably never trust her again.
âH-hey there, Anne! What brings you here?â Sasha asked, twirling a strand of her hair between her fingers - a habit she often got into when she was nervous.
âYou, uh, you wanted to meet me out here.â Anne answered.
âOh. Right. So I did.â
There was an awkward pause. For a moment, Sasha thought that Anne would turn around and leave, until she pointed up at the barn ahead of them.
âDâyou think we could go in there?â She asked. âItâs kinda chilly out here.â
âSure thing.â Sasha said, wasting no time in running up to the door and pushing it open. Once her and Anne were both inside, they closed it tightly and collapsed on the floor in a heap, rubbing their hands together to warm up.
âââââ
âSo⊠what now?â Anne asked quietly. This is it, Sasha thought, itâs now or never.
Exhaling shakily, she turned around so the two of them were face-to-face.
âListen, Anne.â She began, âI⊠the reason I brought you here is because I wanted to tell you⊠Iâm sorry. Iâm so, so sorry. Not just for what happened in Newtopia, for everything. I pushed you around for years, and you never got a chance to stick up for yourself. You put your trust in me, even after all of that, and- and I let you down. I understand if you canât forgive me.â
By now there were tears beginning to form in her eyes, which she promptly wiped away with her sleeve.
Suddenly, she felt the familiar warm touch of a hand on her shoulder, and looked up to find Anne smiling at her (she was actually smiling at her!).
âThank you, Sash,â Anne said softly. âThat means a lot to me.â
âReally?â Sasha exclaimed, sniffling. âThank you!â
With that she tackled Anne into a tight hug, smiling against her shoulder when she reciprocated it. They eventually pulled apart but kept their hands intertwined, which made Sashaâs cheeks turn a rosy shade of pink. Or maybe that was just because of the cold.
âSo, are we⊠good?â She asked nervously.
âWell, itâll probably be a while before we fully trust each other again, but weâll get there - Marcyâs counting on it. If youâre in, then Iâm in!â Anne said, giving Sashaâs hands a reassuring squeeze. Sasha nodded and squeezed back.
âIâm in.â
The two embraced again, falling into a comfortable silence as the world carried on around them, and Sasha soon discovered that yep, her red cheeks had nothing to do with the cold.

Humans are Space Orcs, âOn a Hill.â
Still working on my ability to write fluff. Hope I am getting better at it :) Hope you all have a great day.
Sunny marched down the hall with great purpose, the words of her brother ringing in her head, âYou know Sunny, if you want to do something special for him, why not try doing something human. I mean fighting is all well and good for Drev, but I wonder if he gets tired of getting the crap kicked out of him on a normal basis.â
Her brother was right of course: Adam did sort of have a habit of catering to her needs and wants rather than his own. It did seem more than fair to give him what he wanted for a change.
So, she had done some research, going around the ship and asking the other humans about what they considered to be special. Of course she threw a lot of ideas out on principle because she knew Adam enough to know that he wasnât going to be interested. It was, surprisingly, Maverick, dateless, lone-wolf Maverick that made the suggestion that caught Sunnyâs attention.
âCome on, what better way to a manâs heart than through his stomach. Take him somewhere cool beside that and youâve got him hook line and sinker.â Of course Sunny didnât understand the metaphor, but she thought she understood the feeling of it.
So, with her plan all pulled together, she made her way up to the captainâs quarters and knocked lightly on the door.
There was a muffled yip from inside followed by a voice, âOh Calm down. Itâs nobody you don't know. COME IN, DOORS UNLOCKED!â
She pressed the panel to the side of the door, and it hissed open. She walked into the large room leaning down to pet waffles as she ran over tail wagging.
Adam was leaning back on his bed, UNSC issued grey shirt and grey camouflage ACU pants.
In his left hand he was holding a book, turning the pages with his right hand.
Sunny squinted at the cover slowly sounding out the words to the human alphabet.
War of the worldsÂ
On the opposite wall, the TV was turned low with some sort of vintage zombie movie playing in the background.
âI thought you were a sci fi geek, not a fantasy nerd.â She said walking over to stand over him.â He set down his open book on the side table, âWhat is more sci-fi than zombies? Some sort of strange disease turns everyone into cannibals. Besides sci fi and fantasy are the same thing, the only difference between them is that sci fi attempts to explain its magic with logic and science, while fantasy creates completely new systems for the way it does things.â
She shrugged, âHAs it ever occurred to you that you are commanding a fleet of spaceships under the command of a galactic council of planets, and you're dating an alien. Does it really get more sci-fi than your life?â
âLeave my nostalgia alone, once upon a time I didnât think any of that was going to happenâŠ. Especially that last one.â His eyes dropped down from her face focusing in on the object she held in one of her right hands, âThatâs a big ass ammo can, what are you doing with it?â
âYouâll see.â She said wryly. Walking over to his closet, pulling out an extra blanket tossing it to him.Â
He nearly fumbled it as he stood head tilted to the side with confusion, âWhat is all this?â
âYouâll see, now come on.â
She led him out of the room and down towards the docking bay where a shuttle had already been prepared for them.
âDo I need weapons?â He wondered nerouvly stepping into the shuttle.
âNo weapons needed.â
âThat is very unusual coming from you.â
âJust pilot the damn shuttle will you.â She said taking the copilot seat next to him and setting the large ammo canister down on the floor. He did as she ordered, sliding into his seat and pulling on a headset, hands flying through the preflight checklist without so much as a thought.
âSo where are we going.â
âJust followed the pre programmed instructions.â
He glanced over at her, his eyebrow raised, âYou make me nervous. You know that?â
She frowned and waved a hand, âOh calm down, I promise itâs nothing big. Youâll like it.â
He shook his head, but finally followed her instructions, lifting the shuttle from the airlock bay and out through the opening airlock doors while lights blinked red over their heads. He followed the instructions to the letter, coming into low orbit with the nearby glowing planet.
They had gone and done a preliminary search of the planet only yesterday determining that it was more than habitable and rather temperate. Plants were already being put together for some kind of scientific colony in itâs northern hemisphere.
âAlright, alien planet is cool.â he said, dropping them into the atmosphere with a sudden rattling, and an eruption of flames out the front window.
That soon dissipated as he slowed the shuttle, and expertly landed them on the pinnacle of a tall spacious hill with a pretty awesome view if she did say so herself.
He shut off the shuttle and stepped outside allowing the warm air to wash over them with a hiss. Adam tilted his head back, nose raised as he took in a deep breath and sigh, âWow.â he muttered.
Sunny didnât have as good a sense of smell as Adam did, but even she could detect the clear crisp air and the slight tang of dewdrops on moist soil. The smell made her hungry as they walked a little further onto the top of the hill, where a strange tree waited for them.
The tree itself was not dissimilar to earth trees, maybe twenty feet tall with a narrow black trunk and spongy yellow blobs sticking to itâs branches blocking out a distant glowing sun. Together they turned to look at the view, and Sunny hummed with pleasure as the human stood open mouthed and gawking.
The ground they stood on was a light greyish blue in color with little yellow flowers poking up every now and again. The tree they stood next to was the only lone tree upon the hill which sloped down into a wide- rambling valley. Purple and blue plant matter made up much of the ground while yellow topped trees added a sharp contrast. The sky above them was a deep blue, almost too dark to be a morning sky, though the sun shone bright through its murky blue haze. And then there were the planet's rings appearing as Massive white arches in the sky which plunged down below the horizon. A crystal blue/purple lake glowed at the center of the valley, reflecting a mirror image of the sun and the rings in the sky above.
âHoly, shit, Adam muttered.â
âNice view, huh.â
Adam rubbed his eyes and shook his head a few times as if he wasnât believing what he was seeing, âNo kidding.â
Leaving him to gawk for a few seconds, she grabbed the blanket from under his arm and then awkwardly worked to spread it out over the grass under the shade of their lone tree.
She was having trouble, but just managed to flatten the blanket out most of the way when Adam turned to look at her. He paused and raised an eyebrow again, smiling a little, âWhat are you doing?â
She smoothed out one last wrinkle and then took a seat on the blanket legs stretched out in front of her, âWhat does it look like.â
He walked over as she plopped the ammo can down between them.
He shook his head, âIâm still not entirely sure.â
Sunny reached out and flipped open the latches to the large canister popping open the lid. Adam peered inside and all at once began to laugh. The smile on his face was enough to tell that it wasnât a mocking laugh or anything. He just seemed genuinely surprised.
He reached inside and pulled out a water bottle still laughing, âAn Ammo can?â
She shrugged, âI am told a picnic basket is usually preferable, but we didnâ have one of those on the ship.â
Adam continued to laugh shaking his head in either disbelief delight or both, âWhat prompted all this.â He asked motion towards the ammo can, now picnic basket.
She shrugged, âI have been made aware that we do a lot of things that are very Drev, but not a lot of things that are particularly human, so I thought maybe I should do something human for you.â
He still had a smile on his face, but this time he shook his head resting one hand over hers, âIts thoughtful of you, Sunny, but I was ok with what we were doing.â
She shrugged, âI know you are, but you often let me have my way, so I thought it would be a good way to show you that I care, to do something that I have never done before.â
He smiled and lay back against the blanket a soft breeze tugging at his shirt, âWell consider mission accomplished. This was a pretty great idea.â He cracked his one good eye to look at her, âSo, who did you ask?â
Sunny shrugged a bit sheepishly, âit was Maverickâs idea, but I DID go looking for her myself.â
âMaverick? That sly dog, I would never have pegged her as the type to come up with something like this.â
âYeah she isâŠ.. Hmmm⊠how shall I say.â
âShe should have been born Drev. I donât think she has ever dated anyone but Iâm pretty sure she would consider kicking the snot out of someone the perfect way to spend an afternoon.â
âShe does have the heart of a Drev.â Sunny said nodding, leaning back on the blanket next to him to stare up at the great rings in the sky above.
Adam chuckled again after a few minutes of silence, âAmmo can.â
âShut up.â
He laughed again and sat up on one elbow digging through the canister until he came up with a sandwich before sitting himself cross legged on the blanket and taking a bite.
Sunny reached in after him and pulled out an apple.
She liked human fruit, though with apples she had to be careful to avoid the seeds. Humans could probably handle them without too much issue, but she had learned from experience that accidentally ingesting an apple seed made her very, very sick.
Adam was about halfway through his sandwich, when a slight movement from the corner of her eye caught Sunnyâs attention. She paused eating her apple mid crunch and turned to look towards the movement.
She paused, eyes widening a little.
âAdamâŠ. Donât look now, but we have company.â
He paused, sandwich halfway to his mouth and turned his head pausing and staring as she had done as a troop of fuzzy foot and a half tall- bird-ish things came waddling up the hill towards them.
Again at about a foot and a half tall, the creatures walked on two legs like a bird. They had very big fluffy bodies and little heads that sat atop their ample fluff. A short thick beak sat at the front of their faces.
âStay very still.â Sunny muttered from the corner of her mouth as the little troop of about fifteen creatures waddled up the hill.
They didnât seem scared of the two strange looking aliens as they approached. Adam, despite Sunnyâs warning leaned over to get a better look as one of them moved closer, âwhat are these?â
The creature was now only a foot or so away from him, and as Sunny watched, itâs small head rose up from itâs fluffy body suspended on the end of itâs long furry neck as it extended and nibbled at Adamâs sandwich.
He let off an exclamation of indignation as he pulled his sandwich away, âAck!â
As soon as the strange noise came out from his mouth a chorus of other voices followed, âACK.â As the entire troop parreted the sound back at him.
He was surrounded now on all sides, and from his opposite side another fo the creatureâs extended his neck in an attempt to take a bit from his sandwich.
âHey!â he shouted leaning the other way and huddling closer around his sandwich.
Sunny laughed, watching as the strange troop of birds began curiously pecking at him.
Two of them were pecking at his bootlaces, another was tugging at his pant leg. One of them had crawled into his lap in search of the sandwich, while two others were busy plucking at strands of hair atop his head. He had his hand raised high over his head in order to protect his sandwich.Â
She continued to laugh as their curiosity led one to stick itâs head down the front of his shirt.
He yelped in surprise.
And the group chorused the sound.
Sunny couldnât hold back the loud barking laugh that spilled from hier, and just like that the group of them scrambled in fear hiding behind Adam in an unruly mob.
Adam frowned, and turned to look over his shoulder, looking back at Sunny with a frown.
One of the birds poked its head out from behind Adam, and upon seeing her it parroted Adamâs yelp of alarm and hid again, âWhy arenât they all over you?â Adam protestedÂ
Sunny snorted, âThey can sense the danger.â
Adam frowned, âiâm dangerous.â
That made sunny laugh again, âYou! Youâre a marshmallow and they can sense it!â
Two more heads poked out from around Adamâs back, and the birds slowly began to wadner forward. One of them crawled back onto his lap, while the others moved to their palace at his bootlaces again.
A couple of them wandered over to sunny where they stood in a semi straight line to just stare at her. She stared backÂ
Adam huffed in frustration, and Sunny turned to look at him, holding his sandwich above his head again, âI could eat you for lunch if I wanted.â He pointed over at Sunny, âSheâs a herbivore.â
They didnât seem to care, and continued to peck at him.
Eventually he was forced to stand up just to eat his sandwich, while they parroted any noise he made that wasnât speech.
Sunny stood after he was finished eating, walking a little ways down the hill with him. The troop followed in a line at Adamâs heels, keeping to his left, where Sunny was on his right.
âLeave it to you to immediately make new alien friends.â
He squeezed her hand, âYou have to admit, Iâm pretty good at it.â He looked up at her out of the corner of his eye, âYou being exhibit A.â
âHmmm, I think you were a bit too good when it comes to me.â
His mouth twitched slightly, âYeah, I sort of didnât intend to make you fall head over heels for me.â She smiled openly now, âBut who could blame you. I am pretty irresistible.â
Sunny would later insist that she shoved him very lightly, and he was just off balance enough to fall over and go rolling halfway down the hill with a troop of birds squawking after him. She would also deny the fact that she laughed when a few of the birds lost their footing and went rolling down the hill after him.
Of course she could be seen awkwardly running down the hill after to see if he was ok, only to come to a stop laughing again when she found him sprawled on his back with one of the creatures sitting atop his chest and another one pecking at his ears. She carried him back up the hill when he proved unable to walk due to dizziness.
âI thought you were a fighter pilot immune to dizziness.â She saidÂ
He crossed his arms just over the bird who had refused to get off his chest, and was not receiving a ride back up the hill courtesy of Sunny, âI AM but only when given warning. Generally I am not launched into flight without my knowledge.â
She snorted as she turfed him down back on the blanket, The bird squawking indignantly,
He frowned at it, âWhat is this?â
After a few minutes, the others followed, returning to their curious adventuring in his clothes and hair. One of them stuck itâs head into his sleeve without warning pradding him in the armpit and forcing him to make another yelping noise which they soon parroted back at him.
Sunny sat pointing and laughing at him as he suffered, though it could hardly count as suffering considering he was smiling so much, and seemed to be more than enjoying it.Â
Her sides hurt with how much laughing she was doing as his expense and couldnât help but take a few pictures of his predicament.Â
It would have seemed strange to an outsider,, if they had come around a few hours later.
A drev and a human lying atop a blanket. The human using the Drev as a pillow, while both of them were surrounded by strange sleeping birdlike creatures, one resting on top of the human while the others hunkered down around them.
Eyes still closed Sunny asked, âSo, despite ourâŠ. Uninvited guests. Did I do good.:
Adam didnât open his eyes either, âThis is probably the best time Ive had in the past week ,and thatâs saying something.â he paused, âYou did good.â
She smiled, âI know, Iâm pretty amazing.â

Chapter 6
Youâre giving it another try, staring at the deep blue sky, and you say to the driver just drive, coz you never felt so alive.
 April 2019
âHey honey, you ok?â Frank juggled his phone, pinning it between his ear and his shoulder as he leaned over his computer in the office, scanning the database on the screen for a filter part they needed to order.Â
âNo, I mean yes! Iâve just heard some awesome news!â
âYeah?â
âYeah, so you remember the guy that bought the house that backs onto the yard when Old Man River diedâŠâ âThat wasnât his name.â Frank chuckled âIt was Mr Morris.â
âHe called himself River, it was funny and suited him. Anyway, thatâs not the point. You know the guy who bought itâŠguess what I found out before?â
Frank stopped what he was doing and straightened up. He didnât like that dick, one bit. When Mr Morris had died at the start of the year, Fliss had been quite upset about the news as the old man had been very friendly to her, often popping in for a cup of tea a few afternoons a week for some company. Mr Morrisâ son had sold the house without them even knowing it had gone on the market, which was a shame as it would have been perfect for them given the location. The guy who had bought it, Frank didnât even know his name, nor did he care because he was a dick and a pervert to boot. The way he looked at Fliss made Frank want to punch his face in.
âWhatâs Douchey Mc Douchebag done now?â
âYouâre so childish.â she scoffed âAnyway, I was only commenting to Joanne last night that we havenât seen him for like a month and she went home and mentioned it to her dad who works with some other guy in the property development business and the long and short of it is heâs gone bankrupt Frank!â
Frank laughed loudly âCouldnât have happened to a nicer guy, babe!â
âI know right!â Fliss voice was gathering pace and pitch, the way it always did when she was excited. âSo literally about half hour after sheâs told me this, someone turns up and thereâs a For Sale sign outside, the house is on the market!â
Ok now he was interested. Frank could picture the look of excitement on her face as she spoke to him and he felt the smile cross his face âNo shit?â
âYeah, Iâll send you the website to look at the photos butâŠoh God, it would be perfect! Some of it is really nice, some of it needs decorating butâŠâ
âOk, well, why donât you call the realtor? Arrange a viewingâ he said âHopefully you wonât puke halfway round this one.â
âOk, first off that wasnât my fault. Bean objected to the smell. Who the fuck cooks eggs the day they know they have someone coming to view their house?â her indignant tone made Frank chuckle âAnd second offâŠâshe paused âI already did. He said he can meet us at half 12.â
âHalf 12? As in lunch time? Today?â Frank frowned.
âI know I just really donât want to miss out on this one Frank, and you said you were gonna come up here for lunch and-â
âOk, ok.â Frank sighed âIâll shuffle some stuff around, work a little later tonight and take an extra half hour.â
âI love you.â she replied and he could hear the smile in her voice.
âGood job I love you too.â he said back gruffly âBecause youâre a pain in my ass.â
He bid her goodbye and just as he was looking at the rota to make sure there were enough staff in to cope if he took a longer lunch, his phone beeped. He clicked through to the link Fliss had sent him and had a scan through the photos. To be fair the house didnât look in too bad condition. It was deceptive from the outside, looked like a small farmhouse but they knew thanks to the extension Douchebag had put on the back it now formed an L shape and from the look of it, was pretty spacious. The kitchen was new, the main bathroom was new so the big work looked like it had been mostly done. The dĂ©cor in some of the rooms was really old fashioned, especially the hallway you and the front reception room, but that was all cosmetic. What really grabbed him was the price. It was up for just over 320 thousand, which was a fucking steal considering the size, location, the garden and the garage/outhouse it came with.
âYou ok Frank?â
He looked up and smiled as Alan, his boss walked in to the office. âYeah, sorry, Fliss has found a house and managed to book a viewing for lunch time. Fucking 7th one in 2 weeks.â
Alan snorted âKeeping you on your toes I see?â
âWell I gotta say, this oneâs looking pretty good. Itâs the house that backs onto our Yard out in Pinellas Park.â Frank explained âIt was sold not even 6 months ago to a developer and heâs apparently gone bankrupt so put it back on the market.â
âHuh.â Alan smiled âSounds like it was meant to be. Take it youâre going then?â
âYeah, Charlie and Gary are in all afternoon. I thought I could take an extra half hour, work it back tonight orâŠâ
âFrank, when was the last time you actually took a full hour for your lunch and didnât cut it short by 10 or 15?â Alan looked at him.
Frank hesitated âYeah, but thatâs-â
âNo buts.â Alan shook his head. âDo what you gotta do.â
âThanks Alan.â Frank smiled, âI appreciate it.â
Alan waved away his gratitude before he dropped into the chair on the opposite side of Frankâs small desk and gestured for Frank to sit down.
âI wanted to talk to you in person, before the news gets out. Iâm looking at retiring Frank, fully this time.â
âThatâs good news, for you I mean.â Frank smiled, taking his seat. âYou must be happy?â
âKinda bitter sweet.â He shrugged âBut I hit 70 this year and bout time I let it all go. Billâs already chomping at the bit to book damned fishing trips so...itâll be nice to step back. But I wanted to talk to you about something.â
âShoot.â
âMy son, James is going to be taking over, that wonât come as any surprise to you as youâve seen him knocking around a bit and he likes you.â
âGood to know Iâm not going to be out on my ass.â Frank smiled, breathing out a little.
âNo, not a chance. I wouldnât allow it.â Alan said âIâll still be the owner, just stepping back from major decision making and day to day running. Anyway, the point is Frank, James needs a deputy. He is young and a little inexperienced. Iâve seen how quickly over the last year youâve picked up rotas, staffing issues, dealt with the stock takes, haggled with the supply chainâŠI wondered if youâd consider it.â
Frank blinked âYou wanna make me deputy manager?â
âIn a word, yes. And I know you got your hands full at the moment and theyâll be even more full when that boy of yours arrives but the changes wonât come into effect until the end of the year so we got plenty of time to work out the details.â
âWow, I errâŠâ Frank shook his head âI donât know what to say.â
âI donât need an answer now.â Alan said, âTake some time to consider it. Talk it over with Fliss.â
âI will, Iâll give it some thought.â
âOk, well, thatâs all I dropped in for.â Alan said, standing up, groaning a little âDid you just hear my damned knees click?â
Frank laughed and shook his head âNo, but to be honest mine click too so I wouldnât worry about it.â
âGetting old sucks.â Alan said, shaking his head âI tell ya, the minute I canât enjoy the simple things in life, put a bullet in my head.â
Frank snorted as Alan shot him a wink and left him to his thoughts.
******* Frank glanced down at the wooden boards beneath his feet in the entrance hall. They were solid old wood, oak he thought, and with a clean and polish would look stunning. He looked up and saw Fliss talking animatedly to the realtor, a young man called David as he nodded and gestured to his left. Fliss opened the door and looked at Frank who followed her into the first reception room. It smelt musty, and there was an old sofa and threadbare carpet in the room but it was light and had a nice, airey feeling to it thanks to the large windows at the front of the house.
âNew carpet and a bit of paintâŠâ Frank mused nodding, âBe good as new.â
She nodded eagerly, her eyes shining a she looked around and nodded at the fire place âReally, in Florida?â
âIt gets cold, as you know.â he teased âBesides, we just fill it with some of your million candles or whateverâŠâ
She nudged him and they turned around, David watching them.
âSo, youâre obviously in the older part of the house that hasnât really been touched apart from upstairs.â he explained, âBut if you follow me Iâll show you the extension which is all new and, well, to be honest, I think itâs stunning.â
The three of them moved back into the hall and through a door at the end which led into a huge open plan kitchen and living area. The kitchen was gorgeous. Sleek white units, modern appliances, marble tops, a huge breakfast bar. Douchebag had clearly spent a fortune doing this up. The floor was a light grey and white laminate which David pointed out was heavy wearing. To the left of the kitchen area was a huge space where Frank could clearly picture their sofas and TV, and then just off that was a door which led into another smaller reception room, freshly painted and carpeted. He was just pondering how they could turn that into a play room when Fliss gave a gasp and nudged Frank pointing to the large bay window at the back which had been converted into a seating nook of sorts. They made their way over and saw that the view extended right over their garden highlighting a small pool area which was surrounded by a low set of railings with a gate that were all painted a glossy black. The pool itself was sparklingly clean and clearly brand new.
âOh wow⊠â Fliss mumbled, looking at the sand stone tiles that surrounded the area and the rest of the garden.
âYeah the rear garden loops in an L round the houseâ David said. âThereâs a larger fence around this area to keep it private and separate from the land at the front that runs flush to the yard area.â
Frankâs hands dropping to her hips as he nodded to the right âCould extend that little patio area for a table and chairs, maybe build a brick BBQ. Couple of sun-loungers for that bit at the back of the pool.â
She nodded eagerly before they headed back into the hallway theyâd entered into where the realtor showed them the little room that was to the right as you came in the door which held a number of shelves and coat hooks and a toilet and sink basin. They then headed up stairs to find 4 bedrooms. The master extended down the entire side of the house overlooking the main yard area of Sandybrook. It needed some work, the plaster and paint was peeling away in some areas, but Frank wasnât worried at that. It was an easy job. What he was pleased to see was that the rest of it was in good condition. There was a brand new en-suite attached to it, housing a toilet, a huge shower and his and hers sinks. The room also had built in wardrobes and huge ceiling to floor bi-folding doors which opened up onto a small balcony. Douchebag had clearly been focussing on the big jobs first before he got into the cosmetics, which Frank had to give him credit for.
The main bathroom was in between the wall of their en-suite and the next bedroom, both situated at the back of the house over the extension and overlooking the fields belonging to the yard. The plaster was fresh in that bedroom but hadnât been painted, again, not an issue, because Frank knew a certain little miss would be no doubt picking a colour as soon a she spotted this room.
âBet Mary chooses this one.â Frank said, voicing his thoughts and Fliss nodded, smiling
âI would if the Master didnât have that en-suite.â she grinned âLook at that view!â
âYeah, whoâd have thought you could work from home in the equestrian businessâ he chuckled as they then headed to the next bedroom on the opposite side of the landing. This was also rather large, but like the main part of the master bedroom, was clearly one of the original two bedrooms the house had and it needed some updating.
The 4th bedroom was a smaller one up a narrow set of stairs hidden by door in the hallway. It opened up into an attic room which tucked into the roof of the house.
The realtor then led them back down and the out to the outbuildings. There was a huge garage with a half- finished apartment of sorts above it that had been used as storage but could be easily a guest suite if they so wanted, and then the thing Frank had really loved was the workshop off the side of the garage, accessed by a small door. It was musty and full of crap but was somewhere for him to store all his tools and work on any side projects he decided to pick up.
All in all Frank was finding it pretty damned hard to pick faults in the place.
As they headed back to the main house and Frank asked David politely to give them a moment to look around alone and he nodded eagerly before Frank and Fliss headed back into the house.
âIâm getting good vibes Sailor.â Fliss said as she turned round, looking at the kitchen, once more heading over to the bay window seat, âreally good vibes.â she spun back to him and he smiled at the look on her face. âI mean, ok, a few rooms need decorating and thereâs some finishing off bits to do all over but itâs nothing that dad canât help with and Iâm sure-â
At that she stopped dead, and gave a little gasp as her hand flew to her bump.
âYou ok?â Frank stepped forward.
âYeah heâsâŠâ she swallowed âBeanâs kicking, Frankie! Quick!â
He reached out with his hand and she took it, pressing it to the side of her bump. After a second or two he felt something wriggle a little under his palm and he looked at Fliss, his face cracking into an open mouthed smile as he felt his son move for the first time.
âLissyâŠâ he swallowed his eyes misting over. âThatâsâŠoh my God!â
âYou should feel it from my POV!â Fliss smiled her own eyes glassy too.
Frank didnât want to take his hand away. Instead, he kept moving his palm, tracking their babyâs movements when eventually they stopped.
âI think that means BB likes the house.â Fliss looked at him.
Frank scoffed, shaking his head. âBBâs Momma likes the house.â
âDoesnât his Daddy?â she asked, her hands sliding round his neck.
âYeah, his Daddy does.â he replied honestly in a low voice as he looked around the large room. âIn fact, I like it a lot.â
âYou think Mary will?â
âAre you kidding?â Frank snorted âSoon as she sees that view and that pool, sheâll be packing to move in straight away.â
âSuppose thereâs only one way to find out.â Fliss smiled.
So they did. They brought Mary back the next day after school. She had squealed at the window seat, yelled about the pool and as she had shot upstairs and headed into the bedroom Frank had predicted she would like, given a jump for joy as she realised from the upstairs she had a view over the tall picket fencing that shielded the private area of the garden.
âI can see Monty!â she gleefully pointed out before turning to Frank and looking at him then to Fliss, her hands on her hips âIf you donât buy this house youâre a pair of dumbasses.â
The same sentiment was echoed by Bill when he turned up fifteen minutes or so later and walked around with Frank whilst Fliss and Mary headed to feed the horses. He did exactly the same thing he had done when they had looked at the apartment, pointed out what they needed to do, how long it should take them to do, rough estimates of cost. Plus, he also reminded Frank they were in a great position. They could buy the place and then give his monthsâ notice on the apartment meaning they could stay where they were until it was finished.
So that was it. Decision made. The next morning they went in with a cheeky offer, some twenty thou below the asking price which was rejected instantly. Then they upped their offer by fiveâŠthen an additional three to total eight, with the fact that they were cash buyers and not in a chain a huge bargaining chip.
It was later that evening, just after they had finished dinner when the realtor called back.
âEvening Mr Adler, ok soâŠI have spoken to the vendor. He says if you can up your offer by another two thousand then youâve got a deal.â David spoke. At that, Frank let out a huge grin, as he looked out of the kitchen window at Mary and Fliss who were outside the apartment, both sat on a chair round the table. He and Fliss had both agreed they were prepared to go to the full asking price, in their mind it was worth it, but they were about to seal the deal here for ten thousand less.
âOk, two thousand more.â Frank said, keeping his voice level âBut the property comes off the market as we donât want anyone else spotting it and offering him more before we exchange contracts.â he repeated word for word what Greg had instructed him to do when he had asked him to handle the conveyancing earlier that morning.
âOk, so the offer on the table is Three-ten on the proviso he grants exclusivityâŠâ David repeated. âOk, leave it with me.â
Frank finished loading the dishwasher, and had just grabbed himself a beer when David called back not even five minutes later.
âCongratulations Mr Adler, you have a deal.â
He thanked him, and grinning ear to ear headed outside, jumping down the steps onto the lawn.
âWhat you looking so pleased about?â Fliss looked up at him suspiciously.
âDavid called⊠weâve settled on three-ten plus exclusivityâ he smiled
âWhat, you meanâŠâ Flissâ mouth fell open and Frank nodded.
âYup, subject to contracts, the place is ours!â
Mary gave a loud cheer as Fliss jumped up and leapt at him as he smiled, wrapping her in his arms, swinging her up slightly.
âI canât believe itâŠâ she whispered. âOur own home!â
âI knowâ he beamed, setting her down as he gave her a quick peck. âIâll call Greg in the morning. When I talked to him about it he said that with no loans involved it shouldnât take too long. We could be looking a having the keys in a month.â His hands dropped to her hips, palms resting either side of where his son was growing âSo plenty of time to do his nursery.â
Fliss grinned and using the arms that were round his neck pulled his face down to hers and pressed a fierce kiss to his mouth. âGod I love you.â she mumbled.
âLove you too.â he grinned, kissing her again, ignoring Maryâs fake puking noises in the background.

June 2019
âMr Adler?"
Frank stopped as he had been striding over the yard to collect Mary and turned to see Mrs McCarthy, her teacher walking towards him.
"Hi." He smiled, removing his sunglasses so he could look her in the eyes.
"I'm so sorry to bother you"
"No bother at all." He assured her "is everything OK?"
Mrs McCarthy glanced over to where Mary was stood talking to her friend, Rosie, and turned back to him
"Yes...nothing too drastic but I wanted to make you aware about a little incident in class this afternoon"
Frank looked at her, blinking "incident?"
"Maybe that's the wrong word." The older, blonde woman said "Look, as you know next week it's the end of year Gala, the fundraiser and we invite the parents to join us for activities.â
Frank nodded, wishing the woman would get to the damned point. He was hot, dirty and bothered after an afternoon of helping the team on a particularly awkward repair and wanted nothing more than to stand under a cold shower for an hour and flop down outside with a beer.
"Well, one of the girls asked Mary if she was bringing her mom and if they were making anything for the bake sale and Mary rather bluntly told the girl her mother was dead and then clammed up. She didn't speak a word for the rest of the afternoon."
Frank felt his chest tighten as he looked over at Mary who was now giggling with Rosie and sighed
"She didn't do anything wrong" Mrs McCarthy pressed "I was just a little worried."
"Thanks for letting me know, I'll talk to her later, make sure she's okay." Frank assured her.
The woman nodded and headed back across the yard as Frank gave a sharp whistle and slid his aviators back onto his face. Mary looked up and said goodbye to Rosie and came wandering over as Frank waved to Rosie's mom who tossed a hand in greeting in response.
"I'm not Thor" She fixed Frank with a stare.
"I know but I couldn't be bothered walking over." He replied honestly as they climbed into the truck
"You have a good day?"
"It was OK." She shrugged. Frank eyed her for a second before she pulled the car away from the kerb and set off down the road.
"What's for dinner?" Mary asked.
"Steak, baked potatoes and salad." He replies "Fliss' choice."
"Are you grilling?" Mary asked.
"Yup." He nodded
"Cool." Mary nodded "Can I go in the pool before?"
"Got any homework?" Frank countered with another question as he looked at her. Mary shook her head
âEnd of year next week and Uni didn't give me any summer work."
"Then yeah, of course you can.â
Frank didn't raise the so called incident, deciding to let her chill out a little bit at home first and digest how she felt. After 20 minutes or so of general chat Frank pulled up their driveway and stopped the truck next to Fliss' truck. As they hopped out Mary glanced across the garden over the smaller part of the fence where she could just see Fliss walking across the yard.
"Please can I go see Monty?" She looked at Frank and he nodded.
"I'll watch you." He agreed. With a grin she sprinted over the lawn, climbed over the fence and dropped over onto the other side. Thor gave a bark and Fliss turned round and smiled at her, before she waved at Frank. He waved back before he headed down the side of the house, through the gate in the larger fence before he unlocked the back door and stepped inside the cool air conditioned kitchen, kicking off his shoes and heading straight to the fridge for a beer. Draining half in one he stood, looking around and smiling. Theyâd finally unpacked the last box yesterday evening and Fliss was still in the process of moving things around their new home, positioning them where she wanted them.
True to Gregâs word, theyâd had the keys to the house 4 and a half weeks after making the offer, and 2 weeks post that once the bedrooms and hall had been decorated with a lot of help from Bill, Verity and Roberta (who had been happy for them yet still cried her eyes out when theyâd left the park, despite the fact they had assured her they would still come visit and she could also come stay with them too) theyâd moved in. The only thing left to do was the reception room (which could wait, it was easy to just shut the door and pretend it didnât exist) and Beanâs nursery, which he, Fliss and Mary had decided to do together as a project. Mary and Fliss had spent nights pouring over Pinterest for ideas and theyâd finally settled on a scheme. Frank had picked up all the plastering supplies and the paint, the furniture was on order and should be arriving at any time that week now he thought about itâŠso hopefully that weekend they could get cracking. That might cheer Mary up now he thought about it.
Taking his beer with him, he picked up his boots and took them to the cloakroom/bathroom by the stairs. He trudged up the steps, shaking his head at Fred who was led at the top, his paws hanging over the edge of the step as he eyed Frank.
"You're gonna cause a fucking accident." He looked at the ginger cat who merely swished his tail in response. Frank headed into their bedroom, stripping off as he went, walking straight into the en-suite, turning on the shower, setting his beer down on the edge of the sink unit. He stepped in and under the stream of cool water, closing the screen behind him, his mind still on Mary and how he was going to bring up what her teacher has said. With a groan he opened the door, reached out of the cubicle for his beer, took another gulp before he set about washing the grime of the day away.
***** "Have you finished grooming him?" Fliss asked, standing in the doorway to Monty's stable. Mary glanced over from where she had been brushing through his white tail and nodded.
"Wanna take him to the paddock?" Fliss smiled. "Cap and Bronson are waiting for their little pal."
"Sure." Mary shrugged and Fliss frowned a little at her demeanour. She was quiet, which was unlike her when she was round the horses. She was normally full of excitement.
"You OK?" She asked and Mary nodded.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"You seem quiet, that's all."
"No, I'm good." She shrugged, before she tossed her brush into the little grooming box she had, closing the lid and passing it to Fliss. Fliss placed the box into the larger wooden one outside the stable before Mary put Monty's halter on and led him out of his stall. Fliss allowed them to walk ahead, her hand on her bump as she followed them out of the yard and down the little path to the gate that led to the paddocks. They reached the one were Monty was going and undoing the gate, Mary led him in. The white pony stood patiently for her to take his halter off before he stuck his nose into the crook of her neck and shoulder. Fliss smiled as Mary gently stroked his neck and then to her utter horror she saw Maryâs shoulders begin to shake as the girl started to cry.
"Hey, Mary..." she soothed, stepping forward as the small girl turned to her, wrapping her arms around her as best she could, pressing her face into her bump "Oh baby what's wrong?"
Mary didnât reply, instead she continued to sob and Fliss felt powerless to do anything other than wrap her arms around her, one hand resting on her head, the other between her shoulders.
âSomething happened at SchoolâŠâ Mary whispered and Fliss gently tipped her head up to look at her. âSomeone said something andâŠâ
âOk, how about we go back to the office and you can tell me all about it ok?â
Mary nodded, sniffing as her sobs died down. Fliss held out her hand and Mary took it and together they headed back down to the yard. Joanne looked at Mary who was hiccupping slightly with her sobs and frowned but Fliss shook her head.
âCan you feed the top barn for me and then you can go.â she said to Jo who nodded. âIâll lock up.â âSure, see you tomorrow. Bye Mary.â she smiled. Mary looked at her and gave a small wave before Fliss led her into the office. She grabbed them both an apple juice from the fridge and then Mary sat on the chair at the end of the desk, wiping her eyes with a tissue that Fliss handed her from the box.
âYou ready to talk?â
Mary nodded, and then she stood up and walked over to Fliss who made room for her to clamber up onto her lap. It was a bit awkward but after a little shifting around they found a way she could sit unobstructed by Boston Bean and Mary lay her head against Flissâ shoulder.
âIt was about the gala.â she sniffed âOne of them asked me if my mom was coming andâŠâ
âOh sweetie.â Fliss sighed, rubbing her back. âI get that must have been hard.â
Mary shrugged âI told them she was dead.â she said matter of factly âI get that and I never knew my mom so I donât miss her as a personâŠbut then I started to think about why she died and I donât understand.â âUnderstand what?â
âWhy?â Mary looked at her. âWhy would she do what she did when she had me? Why did she want to leave me behind?â
Fliss took a deep breath and cradled the girl as best she could, trying to think of a way to explain to which Mary could relate, and then it came to her, she could use her own experience here. There was no getting around the fact this was going to be a heave conversation, but Mary was a smart kid and deserved to be treated as such.
With another deep inhale, Fliss looked down at her, kissing her head before she opened rather bluntly "You know I tried to kill myself."
"You did?" Mary pulled back to look up at her "Why?"
"Because I saw it as my only way out." Fliss gently smoothing Maryâs hair back. "I was stuck in an awful situation. My ex-husband hurt me physically and mentally and I gave up. I wanted out."
Mary remained silent and looked at her.
"For someone to get to that point...they have to have hit rock bottom. Like there is nowhere to go. It's not their fault. And it doesn't mean they don't love the people they leave behind just that they're desperate to escape whatever pain they feel, be it in their head or their body or both."
"But I still don't understand." Mary shook her head.
"And you may never, not fully." Fliss sighed gently "And as horrible as it is that's something you are gonna have to live with but you have to remember that your mom was sick. And for whatever reason she saw this as her only escape. It wasn't Evelyn's fault, it wasn't Frank's fault and it certainly wasn't yours."
"But if she loved me like Frank says she did..."
"You think I don't love my mum and dad? Or Steve? Charlie, Joel?"
Mary blinked before she lay her head back against Fliss' shoulder. "Of course you do.â
"But I was still gonna leave them behind. I was desperate. And you wanna know the real stupid thing?"
"What?"
"When I got better I still went back to John. I went back to a real toxic environment and a man that abused me. Because I felt like it was what I deserved. And even though I left him way before I met you and Frank, it wasn't until me and Frank started dating that I really understood I wasn't to blame. I always thought I did something to make him hurt me but I didn't. Being with Frank, the way he treats me and loves me made me see that it was him with the problem, not me.â
"But that's different" Mary glanced up
"The trigger was, yes." Fliss nodded "But your mom, like me, was in a position so helpless, so unbelievably sad that she thought she was to blame and that the world, including you, would be better off without her even though she was so wrong."
**** Once showered and dried, Frank dressed in a pair of shorts and clean T-shirt before he headed back downstairs. There was no sign of Fliss or Mary but as he strode out into the garden he heard a car heading down the drive by the side of the house from the yard and correctly assumed it was Joanne leaving for the day. He opened the gate and just saw the tail of her car turn onto the main road as he headed into the garage for the charcoal to light the BBQ.
Once that was done, leaving the flames to die down he headed out across the lawn, vaulting over the small fence onto the yard. He headed round the barn and frowned as he couldn't see anyone. After a quick look round he spotted the door to Fliss' office was closed. He went to open it but stopped as he could hear the sound of voices. It was Mary and Fliss but he could tell from the pitch and stutters in Mary's that she was upset. He paused, hand hovering over the handle as he heard Fliss speaking to her softly. "Stack, you are so loved. Frank loves you, I love you, Nanny V, Poppa Bill, Uncle Steeby, Roberta, Evelyn...Thor, Fred and Monty..." she paused "You're such a special little girl and I know I'm not your mom but, well, I feel like I am."
"You do?"
"I'd do anything to keep you safe and happy. And so would Frank"
They both fell silent and Frank swallowed, the lump in his throat almost choking him.
"Don't ever feel like we don't" Fliss continued "and if I have to bake 200 fucking cookies for your Gala next week to prove it then I will."
Mary giggles "You know Bean can hear you swearing."
"Well I won't tell Frank if you don't"
"Do you think Frank feels like my dad?" Mary asked a moment later and at that point Frank really wanted to walk away. He couldn't listen to this, he didn't want to listen to this...but something kept him rooted to the spot.
"I know he does." Fliss replied.
"But he doesn't like it when people say it. I know that, I heard him talking to you. Billâs not your real dad but you still say he isâŠ."
âThatâs slightly different sweetheart.â Fliss sighed "My real dad left my mom before I was born, so when he died. I didnât even know him and I donât care that I didnât either. But your mom was Frank's sister. He wants to make sure you remember her, understand who she was. He could have easily just pretended to be your dad all this time, you would never have known any different but he didn't. Because he loves you and your mom too much. He's too honest and itâs important to him that you understand. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love you like he is your dad, or that you can't love him like he is."
Frank turned away from the door, looking up at the sky and taking a deep shuddering breath. Fuck, this was hard to hear. He knew Mary had been upset before but the thought that it ran this deep was killing me. Wiping at his face, his hands then dropped to his hips and he looked down at his sneakers before he turned to the door, reaching for the handle but once more pausing as he couldnât face interrupting them, not whilst they were in the middle of a moment.
âI suppose that makes sense.â Mary continued âAnd I do love him like he is. And I love you like youâre my mom too.â
âWell thatâs all that matters.â Fliss replied âIt may be unconventional but weâre a family, and thatâs the main thing huh?â
âYeah, youâre right. Thanks Lissy.â Mary spoke.
âYouâre welcome Stackâ Flissâs voice was soft and there was a pause as Frank could picture the pair of them hugging.
âHey, did you now Iâm going to be doing all the money stuff for the bake stall?â Maryâs voice was suddenly up beat as she switched topic âBecause Iâm good at maths they said I could be in charge of payments and handing people their change and stuff.â
âNice work kiddo.â Fliss smiled, âTell you what, weâll put Nanny V on the case, her baking is way better than mine. We can get her over one night next week whilst Pops is helping Frank with the plastering in the nursery.â
Ok, that was it, safe to enter without interrupting anything. Frank gave a little knock and then opened the door, fixing a smile on his face.
âHope I havenât interrupted any girl talkâ he smiled and Mary jumped up and ran to him, giving him a hug. He looked at Fliss who wiped her eyes.
âOk?â he mouthed at her and she nodded back, her lips moving silently as she replied.
âTell you later.â
âBBQ is lit.â Frank said, looking down at Mary âYou still wanna play in the pool?â
She nodded and grinned. âYeah.â
âSounds like a great idea.â Fliss grinned âLetâs lock up and head homeâŠoh wait, we donât need to head home becauseâŠâ âWeâre already there!â Mary grinned, and then she spun round to see Fred peering round the door. âHey, look who came to visit!â âBout time he earned his keep.â Frank grumbled âGo catch some mice.â
Fred stalked past him into the office, looked around, before he sauntered back out, clearly not interested.
âHeâs a lover not a killer Frank.â Mary grinned, as Frank watched the cat walk off into the evening sun.
The three of them locked up before they headed back to the house and Mary shot upstairs to get changed.
âSo, how much did you hear?â Fliss turned to Frank as he pulled a beer from the fridge along with a bottle of water, sliding it over to her.
âEnough.â he sighed âHer teacher collared me before. Said that one of the kids had asked about her mom in class and sheâd gotten upset.â
âShe asked me why Diane did what she did.â Fliss sighed, âWhy she left her behind if she loved her so much.â
Frank swallowed. âWhat did you say?â
âI explained about why I tried to kill myself.â Fliss shrugged âTold her about the desperation I feltâŠbut that didnât mean that I didnât love my family just that I saw it as my only way out. I know it was heavy and maybe not really the right thing to do but...â
She was cut off as Frank stepped forward, taking her face in his hands as he kissed her, hard. It took her a moment to catch up but once she did she melted into him, her mouth opening to grant him access as he ran his tongue along her bottom lip.
âThank you.â He said gently as he pulled away, his hands still cupping her face.
âWhat for?â Fliss asked, reaching up to gently wrap her fingers around his wrists.
âFor loving her as much as you do.â he shrugged. âFor loving us both as much as you do.â
âOh, Sailor.â Flissâ eyes brimmed with tears âHow could I not?â
***** Frank didnât sleep particularly well that night. Maryâs conversation with Fliss was running through his brain and every time he drifted off he would wake about an hour or so later, fresh worries and concerns running through his mind. In the end, at just before 5 am he gave up and climbed out of bed. He grabbed a T-shirt and a pair of sweats and putting them on he headed downstairs. He flipped on the TV in the hope the early morning new would distract him, but it didnât.
It was clear to him that Mary was struggling with where she was going to fit in the family dynamic. He hadnât really worried much up to that point, being convinced by Fliss that if they kept her involved with stuff to do with Bean she would be ok but this went much deeper than the fact they were expecting a baby.
Heâd be lying if he said the thought of him claiming to be Maryâs Father had never entered his mind. It would have been a lot easier but out of loyalty and love to Diane he had wanted to make sure she knew about her mother, and understood the truth because in the end, a lie would always come round to bite you on the ass. It wasnât that he had a problem with people assuming he was Maryâs father butâŠ
God what a fucking mess.
âHeyâŠâ a soft voice drew him from his thoughts and he looked up to see Fliss stood in the doorway, his T-shirt she was wearing now hardly covered the top of her thighs thanks to her Bean bump.
âSorry beautiful, did I wake you?â he asked.
âNo.â she shook her head, dropping down next to him. âI got up to pee and you were gone.â
âCouldnât sleep.â he shrugged.
âWhatâs wrong handsome?â she lay her head on his shoulder and he took a deep breath.
âJust thinking about Mary thatâs all.â he shrugged. âSheâs always asked questions about Diane but not like that.â
âSheâs getting older Frank.â Fliss said, her hand reaching out for his as she began to play with his fingers âSheâs bound to start thinking about things differently. She was ok last night after she talked to me, and then later you when you tucked her in. She doesnât keep her feelings bottled up, and thatâs good. Itâs a testament to you that she feels like she can talk to us about things.â
âI know.â Frank looked down at her, kissing her head âI guess I just worry Lissy, worry about how sheâs gonna feel when Bean is here and heâs calling us mom and dad and she doesnât.â
âFrank.â Fliss sighed as she sat up straight. âMary knows we love her. And what she calls us doesnât change a damned thing. Youâre worrying unduly now. We canât do anything about that other than-â
âYes, yes we could.â Frank looked at her. Fliss took a deep breath as his eyes locked onto hers, instantly understanding.
âI thought you said youâd never even consider adopting her?â
âI never thought I would.â he shrugged. âBut itâs been playing on my mind after what mother said and then after last nightâŠâ âWhy? What did Evelyn say?â Fliss asked.
âWhen she was here last, she told me that Dianeâs memory wouldnât suddenly fade if Mary called me dadâŠâ he licked his lips âIt was almost like she was giving me permission to do itâŠyou know? Not that I need it or really give a shit what she thinks.â he paused, taking a deep breath âIf Iâm totally honest Diane isnât the only reason I said I didnât want to. I just never thought of myself as being dad material. I was such a screw up until I met you and I thought that by staying as her Uncle, it would give her that distance, you know?â
âNot dad material?â Fliss looked at him, shaking her head âOh Frank, you idiot. Youâve done an amazing job with herâŠand you will do with Bean too.â
He smiled at her, sniffing slightly as she continued.
âBut there is one person whoâs opinion counts most here.â Fliss said gently âAnd thatâs Mary. If youâre serious then you should ask her if itâs what she wants. Because after 9 years of calling you FrankâŠâ
âI know.â Frank agreed, âAnd I agree, completely. It would have to be her decision. But at least if I ask her if she would like us to then-â
âUs?â Fliss looked at him, blinking. âYou mean you want me to?â
âOf course I do.â Frank nodded, before he frowned slightly âBut if that isnât what you want, I understand. Itâs a big-â Fliss cut him off by pressing a kiss to his lips âOf course I do Frank. I love Mary like she is my own anyway soâŠâ Frank beamed at her and wrapped his arms around her, kissing her head. âSo, weâre agreed. We ask her?â
Fliss nodded and pulled back, her hand resting on his cheek. âWe ask her.â
