I wonder why christian misrepresentation are rarely talked about if compared to other religion misrepresentation. Like, I've seen people really vocal about Greek myths misrepresentation in LO and such (and it's valid because it's a culture and religion) but I rarely saw the same thing with christian even though there are many media who use christian religion innacurately, to the point where it comes off as using it as an aesthetic and not a proper religion.

Is it because of rampant religious trauma especially in western world? No ulterior motives on this question. I'm not a christian and yet I'm curious about this. I apologize if this sounds harsh.

I obviously don't have The Answer(tm) to this but personally speaking (and I'm about to get VERY personal here so take this with MOUNTAINS OF SALT), I think it's just the obvious - Christian mythology is one of the most well-documented and strongly protected out of virtually any other religion on the planet. Especially here in the West, it's commonplace for kids to go to Sunday school, for couples to have Christian weddings even if they're not practising Christians themselves, even the American anthem references the Christian God. It's simply not as easy to 'misrepresent' it because the representation is written into our very fabric of society. Even Greece itself is primarily made up of Orthodox Christians.

So anyone that does 'misrepresent' it are either completely mislead hardcore Christians, or people who are doing it intentionally, such as with the intent to make a parody of it or to deconstruct it through a different context or whatever have you. And of course, people will still get mad at those things, if you're implying that people aren't vocal about Christian misrepresentation then frankly IDK what to tell you there LOL If you want a contextual example in the realm of webtoons, Religiously Gay was dragged to hell and back during its launch for having a very crude and insulting depiction of St. Michael, and frankly, yeah I don't disagree because what the fuck is this-

(like at best it's just terrible character design lmao that said, there's also plenty else to criticize Religiously Gay for, including its fetishy representation of gay relationships and the fact that it's still just the "naive person who looks and acts like a child hooks up with mean person in a position of power" trope, blech, but the character design is definitely the first thing you notice)

There are even plenty of hardcore Christians who will deadass claim "misrepresentation" over things that ARE factually correct but they just haven't read the actual Bible and simply cherry pick what works for their own agenda. And of course those people are routinely called out by people like myself who know for a fact that Jesus wouldn't have promoted the war crimes that many modern day Christians are committing and justifying today. So it really depends on the definition of "misrepresentation" here.

The issue specifically with LO and Rachel that I personally call her out for (and many others) is that she's called herself a "folklorist" and claimed she's so much more knowledgeable on Greek myth than anyone else, while making a complete mockery of the original mythologies while not being honest about her intent as to whether LO is actually supposed to be a legitimate retelling OR a parody (because it sure acts like the latter more than the former, but she still seems to expect us to take it seriously and consider her knowledge of Greek myth superior?) Which leads to a lot of her teenage audience claiming shit like "Persephone went down to the underworld willingly" and "Apollo did assault Persephone in the original myths actually" and the classic "why would Lore Olympus lie or make up fake myths?"

You just can't pull off this extent of erasure with Christian mythology because we have a whole ass book of it that's been preserved, sold on shelves, and systematically integrated into society for thousands of years. Of course, there are people who will still try their damned best to twist the Bible to match their own bigotry with the whole "Jesus hates gays" bullshit (he would never), but it's met with equal amounts of 'misrepresentation' that are actually fully well-read and are intentionally subverting and changing things to either critique, parody, or restore the original intent of a lot of stories in the Bible without all the manufactured right-wing crap.

Greek myth, on the other hand, has some stories that are well preserved, and others, not so much. And in the modern day outside of the poems and hymns, you'll also rarely, if ever, see anyone use stories from Greek myth to ostracize, torture, and murder other people. "Misrepresenting Christianity" is more often done by actual Christians who are using the Bible to commit hate crimes than the people who have actually read the Bible and are just taking creative liberties with it for the sake of deconstructing / parodying / analyzing / subverting it. Veggie Tales "misrepresents" Christian stories because obviously Moses wasn't a fucking cucumber lmao but it still accomplishes its goal by retelling Christian stories in a way that's fun and educational for children.

By comparison (on the whole, I'm not comparing LO to Veggie Tales LMAO) LO just isn't clear in its intentions beyond Rachel's initial statements that she was trying to "deconstruct" the myths, while labelling herself as a folklorist. Therefore, I'm going to criticize how she does it because the way she's done it up until now has been very mishandled and has resulted in a lot of misinterpretations of the myths simply for the sake of fandom. And yes, these people exist in Christian media as well - they're called TV evangelists.

And that's my (very heavy) two cents.

Okay so I was a bit pressed on time while working on this so I couldn't do as much research and references as I should.

On Sam's part, the somewhat floating book was inspired on how genshin impact's catalysts have their books/weapon just floats and it looks fancy n magical n Sam deserve that honestly

Her glowing tattoo are highkey inspired of this beautiful Sam with tattoos art by @the-stove-is-on-fire Mine is nowhere close to that but that's my main inspiration for this

I was gonna give Tucker his usual orange sweater but I noticed a lot of neon or cyberpunk outfit relies on dark backdrop to pop.

And since the background color is gonna be bright yellow, I gotta put the dark color somewhere else. And his sweater would be the perfect spot to balance out all the brightness with a bit of darkness

And it matches with Sam too so it works out great uwu

The magic circles on their back were mostly there to balance out the composition bc it looks too empty as is, gotta spice it up a lil bit uwu But a direct halo would look.. too out there? I mean I can but like.. Sam is magic/fantasy based, why not lean on that n go for magic circles :D

Tucker's random bits on the background took the most out of me bc like.. its hard qwq I literally try to look up aesthetic bg to figure out how to work with his?? Eventually I just settle on less is more and added shadow under the bits to make em pops out against the orange

And for the color choices, I wanted the two of them to have purple, yellow, and green on them. The green color on to symbolize Danny bc I'm an Everlasting Trio shipper lmao

I wanted Sam to have some yellow and green on her magic, which kinda.. got covered with the whites honestly. But the greens stays with the vines so we'll go with that Tucker was harder to figure out, so I settle with him with blue and greens instead of purple qwq

In the end, only the green end up staying lmao It ends up unifying both sides so hell yea it all works out lol

My Alabaster Headcanons

-The guy vibes with the Christian Aesthetic(tm). He just likes the looks of it. -MAMA'S BOY -He used to be obsessed with Harry Potter as a kid and learned all the spells. He even had a want and one of these Hogwarts robes. the whole shebang. -Due to his incantation he speaks Latin very well. His father taught it to him even before he found out about his demigod heritage. -Alabaster's father was a well-known historian who specialized in the religious practices of the ancient world with a special love for the Greek pantheon. -He was discovered and brought to camp at the age of ten. -Alabaster lost his father when he was twelve. It was at summer during the time Alabaster visited Camp Halfblood where his father went out for a work trip to a dig site in Greece. There was an accident on the site that claimed the life of multiple men, Alabaster's father among them. -Alabaster is actually named after his great-grandfather. -After the death of his father Alabaster became a year-rounder. The first few months were horrible, he spent most his days crying in the Hermes cabin. Luke was his main caretaker during that time- making sure he ate and drank enough while also talking and comforting him throughout. -Hecate was, by godly standards, very active in her children's life. She talked to Alabaster and her other children as much as she could, it helped a lot- especially after the death of Alabaster's father. -He was one of the first people to join Luke after TLT. After Alabaster joined many of the other Hecate kids soon followed. -Alabaster was the one who had to prepare Luke's body before he entered that sarcophagus. Remember that hole Luke had in his chest which Percy describes in BotL? Yeah, that was done with Alabaster's magic. -He looked up to Luke a lot. Part of the reason why he hates Percy Jackson and Camp Halfblood so much is because he believes they killed Luke. -If anyone ever told him that Luke actually ended up killing himself to defeat Kronos, he wouldn't believe them. -Alabaster used to be pretty high-ranking in the Titan Army.

You. . .should probably not have informed me that you have seen Sky High and have ever had thoughts about it, because now I am going to QUESTION you (I have not seen BNHA, despite my absolute best efforts, so some of these may be stupid questions):

1) I get the sense in Sky High that the power ratio is swapped compared to BNHA. Like, having superpowers is the 20%, not having powers is the 80%, which is why it's still expected that you hide your powers. Is this a regional difference? Is the power ratio actually different or is it just that Sky High is only for kids who's parents are heroes? And so lots of people are powered, they just aren't heroes and aren't focused on?

3) Actually, back on the hiding your powers thing, why do they do that in Sky High but not BNHA (to my understanding at least)? Is it just that the Sky High cast is all superheroes or the children of superheroes trying to maintain a secret identity, or is it that America has some sort of stigma on superpowers (possibly due to it being a minority)?

3) What is Sky High's relationship to UA? How rare are these hero schools? Are they even aware of each other? Are they rivals? Friendly? Do they do exchange programs? Does one have significantly more clout than the other?

4) The Commander and Jetstream are very very patriotic and American heroes. Is this just like their aesthetic, or does it have something to do with them being diplomats/representatives/mascots for America?

5) Sky High is built off beloved cheesy stereotypes, which means the stated goal of most of the villains is World Domination TM. Has anyone ever actually gotten close, and what would that have looked like in both areas?

6) What would a regional super school in somewhere like europe or south america look like and how would it compare to UA and Sky High?

7) Any and all thoughts on particular plot and character beats that you liked or did not like from Sky High, and/or how you would do them differently?

Sorry this is so long, I just wasn't aware other people who watched this movie ever had Thoughts about it outside the initial watch, and I am EXCITED!

Honestly I think most of my thoughts would be that Sky High happens earlier in the Timeline.

When Quirks are less common and being a Superhero is only a new profession, and due to how few Heroes there are they still maintain Secret Identities to the public but are government-registered.

Over time it transferred to how it is in bnha where Heroes are publicly known and less secret identities (though many do keep their homelife on the downlow while hamming it up at 'work'), and Quirks being much more common in newer generations therefore allowing more schools.

Hero Schools nowadays are decently common. Like in Canon bnha there's half a dozen for Japan alone. So you can only imagine how many America would have. At LEAST one per state. I think UA and Sky High would be aware of each other in the sense that they're considered the best Hero School in their respective country, and some friendly rivalry and international programs together. Similar with Hero Schools in other countries.

The Commander and Jetstream are def just Like That™ for aesthetics lmao.

Also in terms of plot, I'm not sure there's anything I'd say I wanted to alter, exactly. But Sky High was a single movie with a 1hr 40min running time. There wasn't a lot of time to explore everything it set up! So I'd say just make a whole series and explore all of it.

I think the only plot point I felt :/ about was Layla's whole 'I'm only going to use my powers when the situation demands it!' thing which meant..... not using them ever unless it was literally life or death at the last second? Like girl you're going to a Hero School to learn how to utilize your abilities through safe (ish) training exercises so you'll know how to use them in real combat. I think in a darker-toned series she might be forced to confront this fact in a harsh way, like another student calling her out on it because of their own tragic backstory.

Fiber arts update, non-spinning edition: I figured out how to crochet more than fucking sc/blo-sc rectangles!

Working on a star-shaped granny-stitch cape/wrap-around shawl:

I randomly stumbled across this colorway of yarn and knew I needed to make this happen.

(It's quite a bit further along now, but taking photos of this thing is a bit of a pain)

Also made myself a crochet halter top:

I'm normally a "high collar, long sleeves" kinda guy but A) I knew this would make my partner make funny noises, B) the flower element means I can look down without getting an eyeful of tit, which is nice because that's the part that usually bothers me for Gender and Aesthetic Reasons (plus, I tend to pick at exposed skin :<) and C) It's actually super comfortable and fun to wear. So, personal growth through skimpy crocheting projects I guess?

The colors are actually nice - beige and sage green - but my camera said nope. Also accidentally made this thing a few rows too long because I Cannot Fucking Read, but I elected to ignore that because I started a new yarn ball in there somewhere and already wove in the ends. Didn't want to frog that.

So soft and fluffy! I also have this yarn in a second, blue-gray/yellow/pink colorway that I'll transition to towards the bottom, for those sweet sweet sunset vibes.

(Also, since the Crocheting Friend(tm) is my friendly neighborhood triangle shawl expert, I'm kind of focusing on patterns that are Not Triangles (and Not Her Specific Brand Of Cardigan/Sweater) so we have some variety in specialties. Makes collaboration and trading easier.)

Mercerized cotton thread and a 1.5mm hook, because a friend of mine collects BJDs, most of them 1/4 scale and vampire/victorian gothic themed, so I decided to answer the question of "can I make a virus shawl in 1/4 scale". The answer appears to be yes, dubiously.

And here I was, thinking I was immune to lace rot because I have the hand-eye-coordination of a drunk toddler and no patience. Lol. Lmao, even.

I feel like my answers to most of these are intertwined, so I'm going to answer them both for each character!

Gabrielle: We share everything! She hasn't really kept up on literature for about fifty years, but she scooped me out of an English Degree with a focus on Modern/World War Literature, so we get to catch up on all of that. She likes to explore: her favourite places are high up and quiet and away from humans. When I was still human, he would sometimes carry me to those places in her arms or on her back, but now we can run there together! Those are my favourite : sometimes he wants me to read to him, and sometimes he wants to explore in silence. Sometimes I come with him and sometimes I sit under a tree and read alone, and wait for him to come back to me... so far, he always does.

Lestat: Whereas I usually spend time away from humans with Gabrielle, I spend time with them when I'm with Lestat: bars and concerts and theatre performances. We're not the best theatre companions, since we often don't overlap in our enjoyment, but we go together anyways, and argue afterwards. Which neither of us enjoys. We should really stop going out together. It's better when we stay in and he plays something for me himself, then we both have fun. We also have a lot of fun hunting together, we have compatible styles there.

Louis: Ugh. Not really. I don't like how he treats art as an investment, instead of an end in itself. Often our tastes overlap, but I'm too busy being mad about the way he assesses value to appreciate the fact that he has aesthetic opinions as well. At least we enjoy a lot of the same movies, and we're the two who get into a three-hour discussion after the movie about the Themes (tm). We don't go out together, we're a homebody kind of duo.

Armand: Now, this is someone I can have a good time with at an art gallery. Both of us connect to art on a more emotional level, and I like to go with him and chat about the different eras and mythology. It's not the best thing for him emotionally, but I'm having a great time, so I don't really care. I like Armand less when he's stable, anyways. He's easier to needle when he's a little between the past and present.

Daniel: We eventually figure out that both of us like to bother the others and see what we get out of it, so we start teaming up occasionally. (first off, if you're someone who does not and has not done this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. second, this is not at all exhaustive of my feelings on the subject and there will probably be more posts about these dynamics and people's behavior toward them in future. as you can imagine by the length of this post that is saying something lmao)

one of the reasons i feel as strongly as i do about the way both canon and fandom have historically been about pericles, pericky, and shitting on anyone who likes them because it Normalizes Abuse(tm), is that their fans are pretty open and emphatic about the fact that it's Fucked Up. it's why we find it compelling. it is vanishingly rare that we don't.

meanwhile, velma is the UwU Cute Sassy Lesbian Icon whose relationship with shaggy was Cringy and Immature (and mutually so 🙃) at worst, when it directly mirrored such visceral aspects of my experience with CSA that i almost threw up rewatching the second episode.

and that's not even getting into how normalized it is for women to abuse men in a relationship, in broad fucking daylight in front of other people, and how men are supposed to Always Want It and it's an insult if they don't, and how the vast majority of CSA--which it overtly is in shaggy's case, he is implied not to be an adult yet--is perpetrated by other kids.

and it's also not getting into the fact that the ~cute lesbian relationship~ is almost certainly going to end up with the other queer girl in the show also being abused, because abusers are not Magically Cured by True Queer Love's Kiss. how it is incredibly difficult for survivors of abuse in a wlw relationship to be acknowledged or get support because then they'd be a Traitor, or people would rather maintain the feel-good fuzzy feelings wlw exist to give them, or they're closeted and it's not safe to let people know they're in a relationship with a woman. how queer relationships, especially between women, are fetishized as cute pure healthy fairytale romances and not dynamics involving real people who might harm each other or be harmed and need help.

and that's not even getting into the fact that mlm are seen as inherently predatory to an extent that the majority of other queer identities are not. how older queer men grooming boys is a classic homophobic stereotype used to justify violence toward them, up to and including lynchings, and how that is the abuse dynamic everyone in the show and fandom latched onto to revile as the Disgusting Evil Predatory One while giving everything else a pass. how mlm have a long history of forced institutionalization and psychiatric torture and abuse, and the Predatory Gay Man is subjected to decades of--you guessed it!--forced institutionalization and psychiatric torture and abuse, which is framed as what he deserved and where he belonged. how he's supposed to be unattractive (and the majority of the people who do this shit lean hard on that), while people are way more likely to give Charming Attractive Aesthetically Pleasing abusers a pass.

this is just..... normal, to the fandom. it's treated as completely normal. and i think that's a whole lot more fucking harmful than finding emotional catharsis in exploring an abusive dynamic that would not fly in broad daylight irl in a million years.

One that surprised me that I was interested in was how she views love. I'm aroace so I usually am. Really disinterested with themes and topics of romantic love especially (hence why I thought she was kinda boring when I first got into milgram) but honestly I love seeing how her perception of love is and how it's warped and yet she clings onto it so tightly that she says she'll die if she can't love the way she does (iirc. Haven't watched vds in forever but I swear she said something along those lines)

Within Milgram story wise I do think it's interesting how her injuries affect not just her but those around her, and I think it's interesting how they have it affect different characters differently, even to the point of being a big factor in another character's changes between trials. I like when characters affect other characters

I'm gonna be real I barely discuss mahiru myself 💥 cuz I tend to hyperfocus on the characters i was originally the most interested in. HOWEVER idothink she should be discussed more in general. man i was trying to come up with a valentine's day themed oc post today (day itself has passed whatever idc) and i weirdly. do not think kat would want to do much for it?? if anything at all? which almost seems contradictory with her character lmao but i think it's partly just 1. she feels loved on a regular basis good job on that one nines and 2. i think she would just find a timed display awkward, if that makes sense? like almost a performance & she would much prefer something natural/spontaneous. i think at Most she would appreciate flowers because what the hell would she need chocolates for (& she's not really a stuffed animal person so.) maybe jewellery? not that she wouldn't trust nines to get her something she likes, she's just extremely particular and likes to shop for herself. so yeah definitely flowers at most, gift wise, which he would plan ahead for & order a nice custom bouquet with flowers & colours he knows she actually likes, no last-minute drug store flowers here. and she'll never say no to having a date night in, she loves just cuddling on the couch and half-watching something while she soaks up nines' attention (& vice versa let's be honest lmao). she's going to want plenty of kisses + touching but that's not unusual tbh. she doesn't even need the day itself mentioned, she'll just take any excuse for them to have a peaceful evening free of distractions <3 rest in fucking pieces to any members of the ivory tower or sabbat packs who interrupt them though

for my IF characters,,, reina is going hard. she's decorating her office (it's still her aesthetic though so it's a gothic valentine's day lmao black roses etc etc). she's sending gifts to qui's house. she's doing a whole themed photo shoot and agonizing over the perfect layout to give him. i feel like she's the one person here who would try her hardest to imitate champagne with carbonated blood but i doubt it would be successful so she just bottles it like wine & serves it over a candlelit 'dinner.' she might even borrow someone's ghoul for the night if she finds out they play violin & have some live music. she expects only participation in return because quite frankly she knows that this is the work of an insane person & no one can match that. qui is just along for the ride lmao god bless, i think he would find it all deeply overwhelming but she is so happy to be doing this for him so he just kinda soaks it up while absolutely buzzing with happiness internally.

iris and lettow are another pair i can see not really caring, lettow is a whole elder and iris never really did much of anything for it in the first place. she's not really a flowers person tbh, plus i think lettow can be pretty dramatically romantic on a fairly regular basis anyway & they've got so much time together while travelling east with no obligations to anyone but themselves. it's just not a necessary holiday.

romina and raúl, though. both of them are still pretty young, and he's got the benefit of still being human. romina would probably try to actually cook him dinner, some italian recipe she remembers enjoying when she was still alive. it's Not Good. like, at all lmao but he still eats it because it was a really nice gesture & it's not like she could have tasted it anyway. alternatively if he already knows it'll be bad he'll offer the idea of them cooking together, which ensures it'll be edible & they can spend time together as an added bonus. the first part of that completely flies over her head tbh but it's fine. these two are definitely going dancing somewhere also, whether it's a club or some cool street venue. they'd also be into watching a movie later on, but raúl strikes me as someone who would want to make it a bit more special by setting up a screen & projector outside so they can be under the stars, maybe get a little fire going too. plenty of cuddling & kisses, possibly sex too if her dog actually ends up leaving them alone (probably not, they will almost definitely have to wait until they're inside and can close the bedroom door lmao) because neither of them want to be stared at during the act, just a deeply awkward situation they would like to avoid because the night is otherwise perfect.
