Chapter 64: The Secret Art of Being Attractive
Tumblr media
Here he is. The CEO of Sex himself. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Sakata Kinta.
Tatsu himself said in a Viz interview that Kinta is one of his favorite characters. I like how Kinta starts as the stereotypical pervy otaku, but as the story develops, he becomes someone you want to root for and can even relate to, and that's something many people dismiss about Kinta by how he's introduced. Plus, he's just the biggest meme. Ten gallon wiener pure beef wang will never be unfunny to me.

Just finishes Blood Over Bright Haven, went to check some goodreads reviews, and people are shitting on M. L. Wang and calling her work "white saviour complex" and "coloniser romance", also saying that her work is a copy of RFK.
And this is why I think reading comprehension is dead, because if you read BOBH and THAT was your take from it, I'm pretty sure you read it with your eyes closed.
Anyway, if yall actually want an amazing dark academia and steampunk-y book with nuanced discussion about societal issues, amazing writing, a morally grey female protag and unique kickass worldbuilding, you should read BOBH by M. L. Wang.

At this point, Rin deserves his own tag.
I love bodyguard tropes but rarely see it/done right. This drama is so perfect!!
There is a halo that’s missing an occupant somewhere
So, let me get this straight - Rin pretended to go along with rebels to learn who they were so he could tell Won (but didn’t tell Won what he is doing so his reactions won’t give away) and now literally throws his sword away in the middle of the fight so as to commit suicide by Won? Also, his little internal monologue is the slashiest thing yet!!!! And I love how it sinks in for Won what his temper made him do.

It takes a truly extra person to leave a last letter to the dude you plan to kill you listing all the traitors you found threatening him as a farewell present. Also WTF no, you don’t deserve death because you like the girl your bro likes! YOU NEEEEEEED THERAPY BEFORE YOUR HONOR GETS YOU KILLED. Except, ooooops, too late!

25. "i'm slowly beginning to understand him. he'll never end up with anyone." !!!!! here comes what i've been hoping for zhan yan in her relationship with jdy. to understand him. jdy understood her but it didn't go the other way round. it was something impossible when he was right beside her, when he was her entire world, when she only had him to rely on. now she's carving out her own life she's happy with - having the freedom to choose if she wants to be alone or not - the closer she is to seeing his loneliness and inability to connect (even if she doesn't know about lwf yet...which apparently happened in s2...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jdy is zhan yan's sun in the winter. jdy is a flickering light in the stairway of lwf's unlit old apartment building. yeah yeah uh huhhhh EXACTLY...... he's in this for a "normal" relationship and he can't give something exceptional in a "normal" relationship, man.

Here's a list of my favorite fantasy books & series that handle racism, oppression, and systemic injustice in interesting and complex ways. There are probably many more out there, but these are my personal recommendations!
The Poppy War Trilogy by R.F. Kuang - obviously, I sing the praises of this series constantly. It follows Rin, a war orphan in the Nikara Empire who secretly studies for a national test that grants her acceptance to the military school Sinegard. It draws on historical sources from mid-20th century China. It is a dark and emotional series with strong characters and offers a complex look at racism, classism, and colonialism. 3 books long, completed.
Babel by R.F. Kuang - this book is truly in my top 5 books of all time. It is a standalone historical fantasy set in a magical version of 1800s Britain. Robin Swift, a young boy from Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell to train to become a translator at the Translation Institute of Babel. Like Kuang's earlier work it delves deep into themes of colonialism and racism, with an emphasis on how these things effect language.
The Burning Kingdoms Trilogy by Tasha Suri - This series is set in a fantasy world that is based on Indian culture. The two main characters are the exiled daughter of the Emperor, Malini, and the ex-priestess of the mysterious Hirana, Priya. Together, they set upon a mission to uproot the Empire. This series explores the costs of power and empire, the complexities of power struggles, and the prices oppressed people must pay for their liberation. It also features queer characters and explores that axis of oppression as well. 3 books long, completed.
The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin - In this fantasy world, frequently destroyed by catastrophic environmental disasters, people known as orogenes are able to manipulate earth and stone. They are hated and feared by most ordinary people, but are occasionally brought under the control of guardians who attempt to control them for the benefit of society. The first book follows three women in three different times, all of them orogenes. It's been a while since I read this series, but it is incredibly well-written and has very compelling magical mysteries while handling enslavement and prejudice well. 3 books long, completed.
The Burning Series by Evan Winter - The Omehi people have been fighting an unwinnable war for years. Some lucky few are born gifted with magical strength, but not Tau, the main character. He plans to get out of military service early, but his plans are foiled by grief and rage when his family is killed. He becomes fixated on revenge against those who betrayed him. If you want to read a story where vengeance is handled extremely well, this series is the one. 2 books, not yet finished, but truly incredibly well-written and action-packed.
Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan - This series is more YA than the others I've mentioned, but it deserves its spot on the list. The main character, Lei, is part of the Paper caste, the lowest caste in Ikhara. She is taken from her village to become one of the King's Paper Girls, a group of young courtesans all from across Ikhara. In the court, she must learn to deal with court politics, and eventually becomes entangled with Wren, one of the other Paper Girls. 3 books, completed.
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang - Sciona is the first woman to become a highmage in Tiran. Her male colleagues look down on her and have a janitor assigned as her assistant. However, her new assistant turns out to be a nomadic hunter from beyond Tiran's borders, who might be the key to unlocking the truth about Tiran's magic. This book is brilliant and tackles complex ideas about empire, rebellion, and interactions between different types of oppression. Standalone.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson - this one is a bit of an honorary mention because I have not yet finished it. The titular main character, Baru, watches her island home get taken over by an invading empire that seeks to enforce its own rules against social contagion to the detriment of the island's traditions. Baru vows to work her way into the empire's system so that she can enact change from within, and grows up to be a mathematical savant, well-educated by the empire's teachers. It's really good so far, and I believe the series has 3 books and is not yet complete.

this writer is Absolutely INSANE
Really liked Hong Jong Hyun in ML:SHR (even though he was obvsly the bad guy with way too much eyeliner so find that out that surprised me lol) but he's Perfect as Wang Rin (who is 100% the endgoal thank you writer you know what you're doing at least in terms of character dynamics) in this!
Pre-Joseon Sageuks: a Biased and Incomplete List
So, as promised way earlier, a post on pre-Joseon sageuks that I’ve either watched or plan to watch so am aware of them. I am sure there are others but here is what I got. Obviously my takes on them are subjective blah blah blah.
Jumong - arguably the Daddy of all Traditional Sageuks, this one ran for over 80 episodes and had insane ratings. It follows the rise of the mythical founder of Gogureyo tho it takes fantastical elements of his story and changes them for historically plausible ones. It’s very long and very meaty and politics/battle heavy and has a large cast of complex characters (including pretty nifty women and a LGBTQ supporting OTP) but it is anchored by the incredible performance of Song Il Gook as the titular character as he slowly but believably grows from nothing to a hero if at the cost of losing his marriage.
The King of Tears Lee Bang Won - this is basically a half and half beast as (you can tell by the title), it’s set in the last days of Goryeo and early days of Joseon. The time period covered is the same as in My Country and Six Flying Dragons, but this is the most traditional take of them all, even more so than 6FD. Not a single pretty face in the cast (tho Joo Sang Wook is a mighty fine man, emphasis on “man”), this is for the real fans of traditional sageuks. I enjoyed it a lot but if you want to check out pre-Joseon sageuks but have mainly watched youth sageuk stuff before, you should probably start with another drama on this list.
The Great Seer - set in the reign of King Gongmin, the last proper king of Goryeo (his son King U is technically the very last but there are questions as to his status), this is for those of you who want to watch Ji Sang in a sageuk. It’s centered around seers but don’t expect mysticism, this knuckles down to politics.
Shin Don - hi there, another story set in the reign of King Gongmin! From the title, you can tel it centers heavily on the powerful monk who ruled for the King at one point. This has been on my to-watch list forever because this appears to devote a decent chunk of its time to Gongmin X Noguk and I am dying for a proper drama for those two. This is from 2005 so if you do watch, keep that in mind in terms of visuals etc. That cast is lit!
Bicheonmu - this is sort of cheating because it’s pretty much set in China but it involves Koreans so. It’s a drama take on the same story told in a pretty awesome movie. Tragic love, battles, young Joo Jin Moo etc. i am very fond of it. This said, find and watch the Chinese version, Korean one was shredded.
The Iron Empress/Empress Cheon Chu - set in Goryeo, this was another of women ruler centric dramas that had a mini popularity peak in late 00s/early 10s (a trend I wish continued.) it got overshadowed by Queen Seonduk but by all accounts is a solid drama. It’s on my list but I haven’t watched it yet.
The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang - by the writer of The Rebel and My Dearest. Have I got your attention? Another woman centric ruler tale set in Baekje. Yes, there is a love story. That cast is great, to boot. I have started and liked what I’ve seen but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Before you look at the ep number and faint seeing the number 108, keep in mind that the eps are half an hour long so it’s an equivalent of a normal 54 ep sageuk so if you can watch eg Empress Ki, you are good with this.
My Country: The New Age - Lee Bang Won but make it gay. OK, I kid, sort of (not really) but this is smart and passionate and heartbreaking. If you want a wide scope or lots of politics, probably not a take for you (Six Flying Dragons is RIGHT there), but if you want an intense, emotional tale, come right in!
Six Flying Dragons - to me, this is THE drama about Lee Bang Won. It’s smart and emotional, deals with politics and has heart. It has a large cast of characters I got invested in, OTPs that will blow your mind etc etc.
Faith/The Great Doctor - if you are a fan of old school shoujo like Red River, Basara or Fushigi Yuugi, this or Moon Lovers are your best bet on this list. A time traveling tale with other fantasy elements about a modern day plastic surgeon who ends up being kidnapped into Goryeo during the early days of King Gongmin’s (hi!) reign by a tormented, oath bound warrior played by Lee Min Ho at his hottest (and playing historical General Choi Young. Do RPS at your pleasure), this one is one of my all time favorites.
Seodonyo/Ballad of Seo Dong - I am actually currently watching this one tho I haven’t been posting about it. Set in both Baekje and Silla, this is an angsty love story with a side of politics. It’s filmed in 2005 and looks accordingly but if you don’t mind dated visuals, this is pretty great!
Emperor of the Sea - set in Silla and Tang, this was a huge hit and deservedly so. Our protag is a slave and gladiator and a great naval hero. This is grim and smart and epic. It’s from 2004 so once again, if dated visuals are no-go, skip, but if you want a great story and performances, this has your name on it.
The Kingdom of the Winds - an epic cursed prince narrative, our ML (Song Il Gook at his sexiest) rises from abandoned prince and slave and abused assassin to general, royal and king, sparing time for an angsty delicious love story with an enemy princess. This has serious sageuk bits AND the best shoujo tropes in the business, plus enough whump to keep anyone happy.
Gye Baek - Lee Seo Jin, another sageuk stalwart, stars as the title character in this tale of a Baekje commoner, war slave and general. This is grim but glorious.
Soldier/God of War - this is a traditional war-centric sageuk and grim as hell. Another slave to general tale.
King Geun Chu Go - this is on my watch list; it’s about a warrior king of Baekje. Haven’t seen it but heard good things.
Ja Myung Go - smart and unrelentingly tragic, featuring Jang Ryeo Won and Jung Kyung Ho as doomed lovers and Park Min Young in an evil role, this is great and has deeply flawed characters in the very definition of doomed by the narrative tale.
Arthdal Chronicles - this is obviously a fantasy but the tale of prophesied twins, magical priestess, wars and mysticism is clearly set in a pre-Joseon in terms of aesthetics world.
Alchemy of Souls - like Arthdal this is pure fantasy but also like Arthdal, a lot of its styling is pre-Joseon so on this list it goes.
Moon Lovers/Scarlet Heart Ryeo - ok I think if people have heard of only one drama on this very long list, it’s probably this one. Modern time traveling heroine ending up during the reign of Goryeo’s King Taejo, in the middle of his sons’ fight for the throne, having an epic but doomed romance with shoujo catnip tortured bad boy Lee Jun Ki.
Shine or Go Crazy - if you want a more historical take on Moon Lovers succession fight but still with plenty of hotness, angst and doomed romance, come right in. This baby stars Jang Hyuk, so you know it’s bound to be good. I actually started it and enjoyed it but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Fun fact: while Moon Lovers was hugely popular internationally, domestically Shine or Go Crazy (they aired around the same time), did much better.
The Legend/The First King’s Four Gods - for a long time this was my favorite kdrama of all time and is still probably in my top 10. Ignore the odd first episode, the rest is perfection. Expensive and wonderfully written, this was Bae Yong Joon’s last drama before he retired to rest on his pile of money (if you are young, you probably don’t remember what a big deal he was, bigger than all the Hallyu stars nowadays put together. He basically was singlehandedly supporting the kdrama industry at one point), but what a worthy way to go out. It’s an epic Goguryeo fantasy tale of a prophesied prince coming into his own, with such amazing characters and relationships and OTPs and battles and points about destiny versus free will. It is everything and I kinda want to rewatch now.
The Blade and The Petal/Sword and Flower - ostensibly a star-crossed Gogureyo love story, this really is more about politics. It’s a mixed bag. The visuals are insane but Uhm Tae Woong, while always solid in modern dramas, is out of place in a sageuk (in QSD Kim Nam Gil stole his thunder; there is nobody to do so here but that doesn’t help him.)
Queen Seon Duk - probably the most famous entrant into female power sageuks, this was a mad hit and centered on the titular character’s rise to power and fight for the same with her female nemesis Mishil. If you want love stories, angsty fighter Bidam propelled Kim Nam Gil to stardom as he stole the leading man mantle from Uhm Tae Woong.
Empress Ki - currently rewatching this. It’s set in the waning days of Goryeo but takes place mainly in Yuan. Still, the FL is Korean and a lot of the story revolves around one of her suitors’, a deposed Korean king, attempts to get his land back. As you can tell by my rabid posts, this is a great drama - politics, romance (I ship FL and the Yuan emperor like mad), murder, dysfunction and everything good.
Hwarang - it’s so brain dead it might as well be a brain-eating amoeba in drama form but it did give us both Park Hyung Sik and Park Seo Joon before they made it big in drama world. It’s terrible tho, stay away.
River where the Moon Rises - I have such a love/hate relationship with this drama - I loved the beginning, with our tormented assassin heroine slowly being warmed by the loyal rustic ML with his own trauma. And then Ji Soo’s bullying scandal happened and he was replaced by Na In Woo, aka the actor I like least from any country in all my close to two decades of watching dramas. I tried but I simply couldn’t and I am still mad. This said, if you don’t share my NIW allergy, it’s probably worth a watch.
The Great King’s Dream - if you liked QSD and can’t get enough of the period but want an even more traditional tale, you can do worse than this drama. I liked what I saw but this baby is 70 eps and lacks Bidam so I peaced out. Maybe I will get back to it sometime, but probably not.
Jeong Do Jeon - as you can tell by the title, centers on JDJ and the last days of Goryeo. Not really my bag (time period been done plenty in other dramas and I don’t have that much interest in JDJ) but supposed to be solid.
My Only Love Song - a short silly mess but still probably better than River (which tells the same story) because it doesn’t have NIW.
King Gwanggaeto the Great - 92 eps. I can’t!
The King Loves - delicious love triangle (that goes ALL ways), angst, prettiness, a side of bodyguard romance. What’s not to love in this Goryeo tale?
ETA: this post was so long that when I tried to tag every drama I mentioned, tumblr told me you hit the tag limit of 30 tags no more tags for you. Oh well, sorry dramas that ended up I tagged!

Chapter 1: No Fetish Without Evil
The whisper of the sand still clung to her ears. The waves were crashing against her veins, warning her against the full moon that was about to come. Soon, her blood would burst from her body, falling into a rain of sound. The more she thought about it, the more her breath shortened, caught by words she didn't want to say. The one in front of her knew nothing of the spring or the winds.
With the image of mountains—taken from a magazine that stopped being produced in 2003 due to its connection with a religious cult— flickering across the wall behind her, she saw the pixels of the trees waver as she stretched her hand. This man, bald and greasy like a chunk of butter, asked her to be his angel for the night. She wondered if her skin would catch the shine from the top of his head after having sex with him yet his hands were too smooth to melt her flesh and his nails were too well-trimmed to reach into her thoughts.
With her eyes half open, she crawled towards the small coffee table near the edge of the bed and pressed her cheek against the cold wood. Tingles spread across her body in a rattle that made her ears ring with an eerie sharpness. Calling her. As always. But she couldn't answer.
"Come on, I'll pay you a hefty sum, come here already and stay still!"

idk if you’ve done this already bc it fits so well but if you haven’t: “you were dead, i saw you die” for jetko?
For this prompt game! (And also this one!)
The attack when it comes descends on Zuko’s carriage from both sides with near-perfect coordination. And from above, judging by the weight landing on the carriage roof, a distinct thump amid the sudden clamor of shouting and weaponry as Zuko whips his dao from beneath the carriage seat, silently cursing the current fashion for floating, flowing layers as he gets his swords into his hands, the familiar hilts welcome and nearly foreign in his grip after so long wielding inkbrush and paper instead and Agni’s tits, has it really been that long since his last real vacation?
Zuko strains his ears, tracking the rapid sounds of the fight, his instinct to hurl himself into battle biting up against Captain Rin Mai’s constant admonishment for Zuko to please stay in one place, Your Majesty, so we can protect you.
Though judging by noise suddenly replacing the woodland quiet of the North Omashu-Chu road—
“Great hit!”
“Get ‘em, Hands!”
—it’s not Zuko who might need protecting today.
Zuko breathes up his inner flame, letting it shiver in his veins and pool in his hands as he hears Private Wang let out a low grunt and drop to the ground. He eyes the carriage door and its flimsy lock, mind flicking between a fire blast or just launching himself bodily through it and holding his fire in reserve, estimating just how much force he could barrel out with if he—
“Aw, fuck,” a clear, high voice suddenly says, “Look at ‘em, these aren’t the right guys!”
“Shit, what?”
“No!”
“The uniforms are all wrong,” the voice grumbles, disgusted. “We’re gonna have to cut them loose and hope they don’t cockroach rat.”
“Are you sure?” someone else asks, doubtful. “It could be a ruse.”
“We can't be positive without an interro—”
“We are not,” a new voice cuts in, low and exasperated like he says it often and tickling the back of Zuko's brain, “Going to interrogate—”
“Because this,” the woman snaps over top as she rips open the carriage door, skipping back when Zuko whips his dao into a ready position and keeping a wary eye on him as she shouts to her companions and Agni's balls this is a girl, Zuko reazlies, looking beneath the dirt and bright streaks of paint, “Is definitely the wrong target.”
“Oh yeah?” that new voice drawls, even more familiar now in a way that has Zuko's adrenaline wanting to spike against well-worn thoughts like ‘betrayal ’ and ‘assassination' even though the context— “What makes you so sure, Greenie. I believe you, but lay it out for the rest of us.”
“Well,” the girl—Greenie?—says, sarcastic, “He is Fire, for start.”
“Oh, well then,” Jet says, stepping around the open carriage door, “You know what we do with Fire around these parts,” he continues, eyes landing on Zuko and flaring wide a bare second before his expression closes into something aloof and watchful and deceptively amused.
Zuko can only gape back, stunned, barely keeping the tips of his dao from sagging and aware his usual court-trained neutrality is nowhere to be found as Jet slowly drags his eyes over Zuko from head to toe. Maybe, Zuko thinks wildly as he takes in the slashing eyebrows and shaggy hair and age-sharpened face, the attack was actually successful and this is all some kind of dream, his mind struggling its way back to consciousness. Or maybe Zuko actually did get assassinated this time, which is going to make things unfortunately difficult for a number of people, but Zuko doesn’t know how to explain the fact that he's seeing a ghost.
“You’re not going to ask?” Jet finally prods, tone low, dangerous, hook swords dangerously easy in his hands, "What we do?"
And Zuko doesn't know that he does want to ask, that he wants to know, but even if he did he doesn't have the words, couldn't speak if he did with how dry his mouth is as his eyes bounce across the familiar breadth of filled-out-now shoulders and the hodge-podge of armor that actually fits and that knowing, would-know-it-anywhere smirk that tils Jet's lips at the silence.
“Tell ‘im, Greenie,” Jet orders, soft, eyes half-lidded and intent and so familiar, too, never wavering from Zuko’s face in a way that makes Zuko's heart trip in his throat and that’s familiar, too, and—
“We tell ‘em,” Greenie says, drawing herself up and clearly imitating Jet’s drawl and slouching ease and somehow managing the bravado to pull it off in her small frame, “That we’ll get a Fire Nation audit set on their ass unless they clear out.”
Zuko jolts, blinking over at her in surprise, knocked out of his stupor with pure shock and gaping for an entirely different reason now as he stares at the girl, then finally back at Jet.
“We hear around here," Jet says like he was waiting for Zuko's attention, "That the Fire Lord is very strict when it comes to audits and impropriety among his ‘citizens living under Earth Kingdom jurisdiction’ these days." Jet's tone is sarcastic and mocking and laughing, his eyes sharp as they slide pointedly to Zuko’s headpiece.
“You were dead,” Zuko finally manages, shock sending the words tripping out of him, the only ones that currently matter. “I saw you die, you were dead.”
“What?” Jet frowns, taken aback enough to actually show it before he pulls his smirk back into place. “When, you weren’t there,” he says, nearly accusing.
“It was in a play,” Zuko says, numb, struggling with the wherewithal to explain right now that he was there, kind of, just early, or maybe late, depending on how you’re measuring it, “You—you got brainwashed and crushed and—” Zuko cuts off hard, gulping back the rest of the words at the way Jet’s hands tighten around his swords, corded muscle shifting along his forearms, Zuko's eyes flicking down and then catching at the faint patchwork of lines against tan skin, an array that could just be dust and dirt and the scars of living or could be—
“So the Fire Lord is getting his information from musical theater, in the new administration?” Jet finally asks, mockery back in his tone like Zuko can’t see the guarded wariness in his eyes, the ready anger, Jet’s gaze still staying fixed on Zuko even as Greenie jolts, her eyes flying wide, mouth forming a nearly comical oh of realization. "Is that an official policy? Part of the 'new era of peace and cooperation?'"
“It wasn’t—” Zuko snaps, hot and feeling himself flushing as he immediately cuts off, because…there might have been a song or two, actually. And Zuko wouldn’t say that puts the entire work into the musical theater category, but he knows that Earth Kingdom plays are generally so low on lyrical music that Jet might consider—
Jet raises his eyebrows, amused, and Zuko corrals his wayward thoughts as Jet crosses his arms, swords loose again in his hands. “Was I at least hot in it?”
“…Uh,” Zuko says, no part of him prepared to articulate ‘yes but not as hot as the actual you.’
But apparently he doesn’t have to articulate it with the way Jet’s smirk curls wide again, with the way Jet gives Zuko a smoldering, lazy once over that’s exactly the same as nine years ago on that boat in Serpent’s Pass, and Zuko swallows hard as his stomach swoops and flutters in answer like he’s sixteen again with that, too.
“We’re heading to rob a corrupt tax official, you know,” Jet suddenly says, tilting his head toward the line of curious eyes peeking around the carriage door, his eyes laughing when Zuko startles like he knows Zuko is only just noticing them. “Not Fire,” Jet smirks, amused and completely insincere as he adds with a casual wave toward Zuko’s unconscious guards, “Sorry.”
“Oh,” Zuko says, blank, rote. “Okay.” If the official isn’t Fire then Zuko can just…not care about it, for now. It’s Bumi’s problem, or—no, this far north it’s probably Lady Tang’s problem, actually, which under the treaty agreements eventually would make it Zuko's but either way, it’s not Zuko’s right now, and that’s what matters. His mind is currently otherwise occupied.
Mostly with the way Jet is watching him, eyes laughing and familiar and here.
“I hear,” Jet says, tucking a stalk of wheatgrass into his mouth and Agni, the way Zuko's stomach swoops seeing it, like in the nine years since he hasn't— “That the guy’s eating like a king, while the rest of his province has to feed off his scraps.”
Zuko stills. His breath catches, inner flame flaring into the gap in anticipation and then in answer as Jet smirks like he knows it, both of them locking eyes and ignoring the whispering behind the carriage door of, "Wait, I thought it was a lady, not—" "Shut up, idiot, do you want them to—"
“That doesn’t seem fair, does it?” Jet drawls, gazee half-lidded and intent, and Zuko licks his lips, hesitating, because the next line isn’t his. Except Jet seems to know it, too, and also the girls, because Jet nudges her without looking and she obediently, immediately pipes up, “What sort of king is sh—he eating like?”
“The fat, happy kind,” Jet purrs, like an invitation, like a seduction, like a challenge, and Zuko is suddenly too impatient to wait for the question, exhilaration and a fuck-the-consequences kind of thrill he hasn’t been able to indulge in years flaring in his chest as he grabs the headpiece out of his hair, tucking it into his belt as he shrugs off his impractical outer robes to reveal the black, utilitarian, close-fitting garments underneath.
“I’m in,” Zuko rasps, familiar words and familiar excitement in his chest, and the feral smile on his lips familiar, too, and just like the one curling Jet’s lips in answer.
(If you'd like to imagine a grown-up Jet, my I direct you to this marvel)
