Wang LingJiao used the chance to scramble out. She took out a cylinder of fire-light from her lapels and shook it a few times. A light shot out of the cylinder. Along with a sharp whistle, it rushed out of the wooden window and exploded in the sky outside. Then, she fumbled out a second one, a third one. Hair tangled, she mumbled, “Come… Come… Come here… Everyone, come here!” Through the pain, Wei WuXian pushed Jiang Cheng, “Stop her from sending any more signals!” Jiang Cheng let go of Wei WuXian and lunged in the direction of Wang LingJiao. Yet, at the same time, Wen ZhuLiu was closing in on Madam Yu. He looked as if he was about to knock her down. Jiang Cheng hurried, “Mom!” He immediately gave up on Wang LingJiao and threw himself over. Wen ZhuLiu didn’t even turn his head as he struck, “Not even close!” Jiang Cheng’s shoulder suffered the attack. Blood immediately burst from his mouth. Wang LingJiao had already let out all of the signal fire-lights. Sharp whistles and bright sparks filled the entire grey-blue sky. - Chapter 58, EXR
It's quite interesting how, in this moment, Jiang Cheng does exactly what he's always criticised Wei Wuxian of doing: endangering the Yunmeng Jiang sect by 'playing the hero'. That's not what either of them are doing, of course – it isn't a motivation for Jiang Cheng here, it's not a motivation for Wei Wuxian anytime else, and the motivations they have definitely make sense – but it's exactly the sort of behaviour Jiang Cheng would criticise Wei Wuxian for, with those exact words.
Yet, no character ever criticises him for this – Wei Wuxian doesn't, even when it was his (necessary) advice that was disregarded; Madam Yu doesn't, even when her sect suffered as a consequence. Even when it very likely played a role in Lotus Pier's downfall (at least in getting a lot of Wen sect cultivators to get there very fast), it's never brought up by any character ever again... whereas Wei Wuxian's action of saving Lan Wangji, Jin Zixuan and Mianmian in the Xuanwu cave constantly is, even when the Wen sect was pretty certainly going to attack Lotus Pier anyway*. That's not to say Jiang Cheng should be blamed for the fall of Lotus Pier, either – that's on the Wen sect, and regardless of both of their actions, the attack was probably going to be a success. And can we blame someone for making a panicked decision protect his mother? – but one's action is definitely more direct than the other, and it's not the one that's constantly blamed.
The aim, though, isn't to compare the actions so much as the attitudes of the people involved, and this is another little detail that shows the imbalance in Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's dynamic. Again, Wei Wuxian doesn't say anything about this afterwards, and doesn't seem to blame him, even when it's his words that were disregarded, and when the Jiang sect and Lotus Pier were undoubtedly very important to him as well. Which is good! That's a good thing and definitely the healthier option for both of them! If the roles were flipped, and Wei Wuxian saved a(n admittedly non-Yu Ziyuan) person, disregarding Jiang Cheng's orders while leading to more danger falling on Lotus Pier? Jiang Cheng would never stop blaming him or bringing it up. Even after the many years that passed between then and Wei Wuxian's resurrection, he still blames Wei Wuxian for the fall of Lotus Pier due to his actions in the Xuanwu cave** – once again, a much less direct scenario.
--
*Very strategic location (trade hub etc), they attacked the Cloud Recesses already, Jiang Cheng's internal narration literally admits this:
In his heart, Jiang Cheng knew clearly that back in the cave of the Xuanwu of Slaughter at Dusk-Creek Mountain, even if Wei WuXian hadn’t saved Lan WangJi, the Wen Sect would have found some reason to come over sooner or later. But he had always felt that, if the whole thing with Wei WuXian didn’t happen, maybe it wouldn’t have been so soon, maybe there would’ve been some way to turn things around - Chapter 59, EXR
Yet there was some time between the end of the Wen indoctrination and the Fall of Lotus Pier, and we never even saw attempts at security adjustments!
**As we see in the Ancestral Hall:
Jiang Cheng mocked, “Look how forgetful you are. What does unwelcome people mean? Then let me remind you. It was because you played the hero and saved Second Young Master Lan, who’s standing beside you right now, that the entire Lotus Pier and my parents went down with you." - Chapter 87, EXR
#also when i do the chapter-by-chapter analysis reread i do want to count how many times jc responds to wlj vs how many times wwx responds#because from not counting it seems jc might have done it more? and that obviously would serve to anger her as well#(and yet she only glares at wwx when he says something – in her case probably more due to her grudge bc of xuanwu cave?#-as although she DOES talk about the place of servants etc i'm pretty sure the wen sect views *everyone* as below them#and they have the power to kill the jiang clan and get away with it - there isn't fear due to power/status there#plus it's not like she cares about/is very informed about talking derogatorily to/about members of the non-wen gentry (or even wzl)#(see: how she talks to Madam Yu)#BUT that being said she still is very classist (despite her position – both things can be true) and wwx's background probably played-#a role in how bad the grudge was? bc someone so low (non-wen and not even part of the gentry) did that to her... though it *definitely*-#would've existed regardless and i don't think it would've changed anything on her end had it been someone else/had wwx BEEN part of it)#(also yzy did play a major role in this as well but that's not the point of discussion in this post)#mdzs#mdzs meta#my meta#mo dao zu shi#魔道祖师#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#gdc#jiang cheng#wei wuxian#poisons 3#i guess this is jiang cheng critical even though my intention really isn't to bash him#just... power imbalance class imbalance and insecurities fun times

Hei Xiazi/Wu Xie (DMBJ)
Remind Me to Kiss You When You Wake Up by angelofmusic46
Keeping Wu Xie alive was second nature at this point.
I am so weak for Sha Hai era fics and this is so wonderful.
Liu San/Iron Triangle (DMBJ)
Broken (Won't Someone Take Me Home) by asmadasa_hatter
In hindsight, Liu Sang really should have known he’d die alone.
I love Pangzi and the Pangsang undertones and how much the Triangle loves Liu Sang. This is soft and perfect and lovely.
Wu Xie/Wang Pangzi (DMBJ)
Spirometer by forerussake
Loving Pangzi is as easy as breathing. That is the comparison Wu Xie used to make, before his lungs started rotting away, before Thunder City and his miraculous recovery. Wu Xie’s lungs may be cured now, but other things take more time. In the aftermath of his illness, in the aftermath of almost dying, with fear and guilt like a constant weight pressing down on Wu Xie’s chest, comparing his love for Pangzi to breathing of all things doesn’t quite seem to work anymore. Not like it used to.
Perhaps Wu Xie has it all wrong though. Perhaps the comparison was never about the ease, but about the effort. Recovery is much the same in that respect. Luckily neither of them have to do it alone.
This is so soft and lovely. I legit cried.

Pangzi stops at the nearest space rest station that's far too busy for his liking, meets a young man with bright eyes and a beautiful smile and gets more than he bargained for.
This is such a wonderful first meeting AU.

Liu Sang finds something unexpected in the ruins of an elven temple.
I can't believe there was a Dragon Age/DMBJ fusion and I somehow missed it. This is perfect.

Hei Xiazi/Xie Yuchen (DMBJ)
blur out my periphery by lunarriviera
“You should order for me,” said Xiao Hua, so quietly no one else could have heard him.
Hei Xiazi felt his eyebrows climb. “You don’t drink when you work.”
Without looking away, Xiao Hua gestured to the room around them: dark-paneled, close, its few entrances and exits already marked out by both of them. “We’re not working, and this is safe. You,” he said, leaning in a little, enough that Hei Xiazi could see his eyelashes, “make me feel safe.”
This gave me so many feelings. Absolutely beautiful piece of writing.

Shen Wei was raised in the temple as a devoted disciple to Kunlun. He is elated to be chosen as the sacrifice Kunlun's bride...

DAILY SELECTIONS FROM LAO-TZU’S TAO TE CHING — DECEMBER 5, 2023
“When the Great Way disappears we meet kindness and justice when reason appears we meet great deceit when the six relations fail we meet obedience and love when the country is in chaos we meet upright officials”
-Lao-tzu- (Taoteching, verse 18, translation by Red Pine)
Connecting this with the previous verse, WEI YUAN says, “What people love and praise are kindness and justice. What people fear is reason. And what people despise is deceit.”
SUNG CH’ANG-HSING says, “It isn’t the Great Way that leaves Humankind and goes into hiding. it’s Humankind that leaves the Great Way and replaces it with kindness and justice.”
SU CH’E says, “When the Great Way flourishes, kindness and justice are at work. But people don’t realize it. Only after the Great Way disappears, do kindness and justice become visible.”
WANG AN-SHIH says, “The Way hides in formlessness. Names arise from discontent. When the Way hides in formlessness, there isn’t any difference between great or small. When names arise from discontent, we get distinctions such as kindness, justice, reason, and so forth.”
HO-SHANG KUNG says, “When the kingdom enjoys peace, no one thinks about kindness, and the people are free of desire. When the Great Way prevails, kindness and justice vanish, just as the stars fade when the sun appears.”
MENCIUS says, “Kindness means dwelling in peace. Justice means taking the right road” (Mencius: 4A.10).
TE CH’ING says, “Reason is what the sage uses to order the kingdom. It includes the arts, measurements, and laws. In the High Ages, people were innocent, and these were unknown. In the Middle Ages, people began to indulge their feelings, and rulers responded with reason. And once reason appeared, the people responded with deceit.”
WANG PI says, “The six relations are between father and son, elder and younger brothers, husband and wife. When these six relations are harmonious, the country governs itself, and there is no need for obedience, love, or honesty.”
WANG P’ANG says, “During a virtuous age, obedience and love are considered normal. Hence, no one is called obedient or loving. Nowadays, when someone is obedient or loving, we praise them. This is because the six relations are no longer harmonious. Moreover, when peace prevails, everyone is honest. How can there be honest officials?
CH’ENG HSUAN-YING says, “When the realm is at peace, loyalty and honesty are nowhere to be seen. Innocence and virtue appear when the realm is in chaos.”
LI JUNG says, “During the time of the sage emperors Fu Hsi and Shen Nung, there was no mention of officials. It was only during the time of the despots Chieh and Chou that we begin to hear of ministers such as Kuan Lung-feng and Pi Kan.”
WU CH’ENG says, “Shao Juo-yu assigns these four divisions to emperors, kings, the wise, and the talented.”
CHUANG-TZU says, “When springs dry up, fish find themselves in puddles, spraying water on each other to keep each other alive. Better to be in a river or lake and oblivious of one another” (Chuangtzu: 6.5).

Explicit:
just guy stuff, by luckymarrow
Wei Ying starts T. He'd like to show his best friend his gains—below the belt. You know, just typical guy stuff.
To Love Intemperately, by Toshokanin
Something in Lan Wangji snaps. He lunges forward, pushing Wei Ying back into the grass, sending them both tumbling. He lands atop him, feeling the satisfying huff of Wei Ying’s breath against his cheek as it is driven from his lungs by the weight of Lan Wangji’s body pinning him to the ground.
He does not wait for Wei Ying to react, pressing their lips together in a hungry collision that jars his teeth. Their noses knock together and he turns his head to the side, seeking a better angle to press his attack. This. This is what he has been wanting, what he has been dreaming of, ever since Wei Ying arrived in Cloud Recesses. From that first thrilling sword fight across the rooftops under the light of the moon to every aggravating encounter in his uncle’s classroom or around Cloud Recesses, when Wei Ying suddenly seemed to be everywhere, taunting him. Everything has been leading up to this moment.
__
Lan Qiren catches Wangxian making out in the bunny meadow. A marriage negotiation ensues.
White Jade and Golden Lotus, by lemonlush
“I will not kick you out of your bed in your room,” Lan Wangji replied stubbornly. “You are doing me a service. Let me take the floor.”
“Absolutely not - look at you!” Wei Wuxian exclaimed, gesturing at Lan Wangji. “All that fine silk? No - I don’t think so. You will ruin it!”
Really? Was that Wei Ying’s concern?
Fine then. That could easily be remedied.
With the jut of his chin, Lan Wang reached for the ties of his robes. He heard Wei Ying’s breath hitch in his throat as he began to undo them, and suddenly he felt very aware of Wei Ying’s eyes on him.
“What are you…What are you doing, Lan Zhan…Lan Wangji…”
Once upon a moonlit night, in Gusu, by naqaashi
Ah, well. Lan Qiren dismisses his nephew’s troublesome husband from his mind. He has no attention to spare for frivolous demonic cultivators who made off with the most precious cabbage in Gusu. It’s his nephew he’s come to meet, his poor deluded-in-love nephew of otherwise upstanding – upstanding -
Well, a distant, not-shrieking-in-horror part of his mind supplies, something's definitely standing up.
~*~
Or, how Gusu Lan got Rule #4278.
Mature:
Interstitial, by WithBroomBefore (4th in a series)
The bedroom is dim, for he neglected to turn on the light; he can see well enough between the overflow from the kitchen and the streetlight outside the window. With nothing he need do for the moment, Lan Wangji’s mind drops into quiet. The bed is unmade, because Wei Wuxian did not have work and was still asleep when Lan Wangji left that morning, so it is easy enough to slip under the covers. The Catfish shifts to accommodate him, delighted with the prospect of a stomach to press herself against. He curls around her little warm body and draws the duvet closer over his own shoulders. It is that odd interstitial time of day between work and a dinner that is not his responsibility to prepare, and the quiet clinking and muttering of Wei Wuxian’s cooking endeavors mean that he is safe here. Lan Wangji drifts.
Unfinished
Not Rated:
You took my face in both your hands, and looked me in the eye, by enbysaurus_rex (2nd in a series)

Falling Lotus Petals, by Hauntcats
Tricked by a demonic cultivator, Jiang Cheng gets thrown back to the day Lotus Pier fell. Things change from there.
Not Jiang friendly, especially Jiang Cheng. Don't like, please, don't read. It won't be fun for you.🙂
No Loss, by eb4life
After being forced to remain stuck in his wolf form by Madam Yu, Wei Wuxian conforms to her wishes of making it appear that he's runaway from home by doing just that. When he's God knows how far from home and manages to get captured by the knights of a king he's only heard rumors of, Wei Wuxian expects to be killed or imprisoned as the king's personal attack dog. He doesn't expect to move from "exotic pet" to "closest friend" within only weeks of his stay at the king's side. This story is inspired by Bisclavret.
Explicit:
The Communication Effect, by draechaeli
If only there was more communication, or the right kind then everything would be all right. Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi might be bad when it comes to talking to each other about the important things, but they are still leagues better then the older generation that use communication like swords: concealing, revealing, and striking as they please for their own gain. From apologies, to misunderstandings, to sieges, to rumours and gossip, to cold wars, to lies, to civil wars, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi navigate the world together once their brothers make sure they’re engaged before the classes at Cloud Recesses are finished.
This fic is finished at 186k in 37 chapters + 3 extras
Heart of the Beast, by WaitForTheSnitch
“Wei Ying?” Nie Mingjue prompted him gently. “Where are your parents?”
“They went on a night hunt,” Wei Ying said, a bit evasively.
“Your parents are cultivators?” Da-ge asked in surprise. “Did they leave you here while they hunted? When did they go on their night hunt?”
“Four summers ago,” Wei Ying said a bit uncomfortable.
“Four summers ago,” Nie Mingjue repeated. “What are your parents’ names?”
“My mama is Cangse Sanren and my baba is Wei Changze,” Wei Ying told him, and recognition registered in Nie Mingjue’s eyes.
“Wei Ying,” Nie Mingjue said, sounding a bit regretful, “Your parents aren’t coming back.”
Or, Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang run into Wei Ying while in Yiling and decide to bring him home. And it changes everything.

He makes a new one then, staring into the flames. He swears it on the memory of Nie Mingjue’s lips against his skin and Lan Xichen’s cold silver eyes. He’s made of regret instead of Jin Gold now and he will not cower down in fear. He will make his father pay for it.

Keep Holding On, by abCEE
As they reached an inn and Wei Wuxian got them a room with three beds, the world seemed to have frozen for Jiang Yanli when her brother suddenly fainted and Jiang Wanyin was just fast enough to catch him before his body could hit the floor.
"A-Xian!"
"Wei Wuxian!"
In which after the Lotus Pier Massacre: Wei Wuxian was greatly injured by Zidian, Jiang Yanli left the inn to buy the medicines and food, and Jiang Wanyin distracted the Wens.
(With a bonus of Wei Wuxian knowing the title of the song and more things ensued inside the Xuanwu Cave that may or may have not involved Lan Wangji's forehead ribbon)
Canon diverged from there.
【银 劍 探 心】| Silver Jian Seeking Hearts, by stiltonbasket
“A ghost bridegroom?” Wei Wuxian asks, when he receives his latest night-hunting assignment from Uncle Jiang. “Have women been going missing?”
If brides have been going missing, this is the first that Wei Wuxian is hearing about it; which is strange, because the systematic kidnapping of brides should have quickly been recognized as spirits’ work and reported as such to the nearest cultivation sect as soon as possible.
“Three women and ten men have gone missing so far,” his uncle tells him. “Jinshan town is out of our jurisdiction, and the records say there hasn’t been a hunt in the area since before my grandfather’s time. But no one from Jinshan thought to report the disappearances until today, so the victims must be long dead by now.”
Four hundred years after the Sunshot Campaign, a reincarnated Wei Wuxian dresses himself in wedding red to defeat the ghost of a bridegroom.
Deep within the forests of Jinshan Mountain, the mourning calamity Yin Jian Tan Xin waits to marry his beloved.
Hound's Tongue Tied Up, by Stepdavii
“I’ve figured out a way to keep us safe. Forever,” Wei Wuxian replies, still writing out all that he can think of that would possibly help.
“Oh? And whats that?” Wen Qing asks blankly.
“I’m going to make the world forget we exist.”
--
In which Wei Wuxian figures the best way to keep everyone safe and make everyones life better, he should make it so that his and Wen Remnants existence become forgotten. He just doesn't realize how much an impact doing so would be.

Alternate, by Hanashi_o_suru
No one is actually sure what happened, or why it happened. No one died. No one made any whacked up array that backfired --to their knowledge--and no one wasn't necessarily in discontent for where they were in life...
So, why is it they're suddenly in the past to the day they had just got to the Cloud Recesses?
