That time I literally did an elevator pitch for HEMA

I was at a convention thing at a hotel and from the ground floor restaurant we had to go back to the convention hall on the 7th floor. Just me and another lady picked to take the elevator, some other younger girls choose to take the stairs, and I did some offhand comment on how in the evening I had to go to the gym and the day was still long and I couldn't tire out just yet.

"Oh, the gym? You do like weightlifting or do some course?"

"Yeah I do historical fencing, we have lesson in a hall with an instuctor... We have the same masks you see for olympic fencing and we use plastic weapon and padded jackets. Right now we are doing german tradition longsword, that is to say a two handed sword. It's all based on the manuscripts the old masters that really fought for their lives with those weapon have left us, they tended to be very cryptic so it's all up to interpretation. We do german school but the italian school is also very well studied, but like, we have next to nothing for the french tradition... It is said Napoleon tried to erase it to make the military less strong and likely to rebel but it's all suppositions"

I think I really did convey how deep in the "historical" part of the discipline and really left no doubt in this person's mind it was some kind of nerd (as in too good at school for their own good) shit
