An idea: What if Michigan gets cocky in battle and tries to show off for Walter, but as a result he quickly becomes overpowered by the enemy and Walter has to come in and save him?

Oh Michigan definitely got cocky in the early days after they graduated lmao

I can imagine like, he'd try to show off to Walter by being all "watch this I can take on ALL THREE enemy ACs by myself" and Walter would stand back and let him do it because a) it's funny to watch Michigan get knocked down a few pegs from time to time (it's healthy for his ego) and b) so Walter can show off by swooping in to save him and getting to be a snarky little bitch like "so what was that about being able to take them?"

Their relationship post-academy would be like, a sort of rivalry. Michigan is more open and blatant about competing and showing off, but Walter's just as keen to flaunt his skill and look good in front of Michigan, it's just that Walter's so good at the poker face and feigning disinterest that he comes across more as dismissive than competitive.

Thankfully by this point Michigan can read him pretty well, so isn't discouraged or overly annoyed. Just sour if Walter pulls ahead of their private little competition.

They definitely have a "damsel in distress" tally. Walter always tries his best to be the knight in shining armour because whenever he starts leading in the damsel tally Michigan keeps calling him princess u-u

I don't think any of the pokemon stories are actually that dark and we should probably be ammending some of the darker shit with "dark FOR POKEMON" because I will be concerned if you as a grown adult have not encountered darker themes than the dead robot parent thing. I'm not expecting it to get super dark it's a kids franchise more than anything else but it's just feels a little too like. Idk. "CHILDHOOD RUINED N WAS ACTUALLY A CHILD ABUSE VICTIM KIDS DONT KNOW ABOUT THIS" Like Yes they do actually. You are both infantilizing yourself and assuming kids just live in blissful ignorance of any and all hardships or are incapable of at least understanding what's going on is Bad. Idk it's not pressing or anything I just think it's sort of annoying and overdone
