Walk Q & A: Jenny McDaniel
In 2017, Anderson, Ind., resident Jenny McDaniel lost her mother to Alzheimer’s. Because of her personal connection to the disease, Jenny has used her experiences and influence to spread awareness of Alzheimer’s and support available as a volunteer member of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Anderson committee. The Anderson Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino.
We asked Jenny some questions about her involvement and passion to end Alzheimer’s.
1. Why did you get involved with the Alzheimer's Association and/or Walk to End Alzheimer's?
My mother moved into an assisted living facility in Anderson in May 2015 that dealt with patients with Alzheimer's. They were just getting ready to have their annual bake sale and the money went to their team that would be walking in September for the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Anderson. So, I joined the team and started baking.
2. What is your Walk to End Alzheimer's team name? Why?
Patsy's Pride is the team name. My mother's name was Patsy and we are like a pride of lions coming together to try to beat Alzheimer's.
3. How do you plan to fundraise for the Walk?
This year I brought a couple of homemade King Cakes to the office in February when the kick-off started and just set a jar beside for donations. ($63)
Our team sold "Thirty One" caddies in March before Easter so if anyone wanted to use them for Easter baskets. We sold them for $20 each and got $9 per bag. ($315)
Our team participated in a bowling fund raiser at the local bowling alley. Each person paid $20 to bowl for 3 hours (shoe rental included). We had door prize drawings for a couple of items ($1 each or 6 for $5) at the bowling event. We also had a 2-day garage sale ($250)
($688 overall, $488 to our team)
4. What is your best fundraising advice?
Try different things. Be creative. Different things will work better in different areas.
A couple of years ago we went to Buffalo Wild Wings and a percentage of the ticket went to Alzheimer's and we raised a little under $200 on one Friday night. We also did a grilling event (hamburger/drink) with a local grocery store: a 3-day event Friday to Sunday and made a little over $700.
5. Do you have a personal connection to Alzheimer's?
Yes, my mother.
6. If you have a personal connection to Alzheimer's, what is one of your most treasured memories with your loved one/honoree?
That is hard to say. There are so many. I guess just in general her willingness to jump in help in anything and her stubbornness not to give up until the task was completed.

Share Your Story: Joe and Julie Hammond
Ten years ago, Julie Hammond’s mother Sue was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Since then, Julie has been participating in the Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer’s for several years.
In 2016, she was unable to participate because the date of the Walk coincided with her son Nick’s final football game of the season. While Julie never considered missing the game, supporting the Alzheimer’s Association has been important to her -- knowing the devastating effects Alzheimer’s has had on her mother and her entire family. Sue now lives in a care facility while the disease continues to progress, and her family is forever changed. Julie knows it is crucial to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Knowing how important it was to Julie to participate in the Walk, Julie’s husband Joe had an idea. In the past, the date of the Walk has fallen close to Julie’s birthday. So, Joe contacted some of Julie’s friends and shared his idea of surprising Julie for her birthday by bringing the Walk to her instead.
They secured a location for their walk after receiving permission to use the cross country course at Hamilton Southeastern High School. Colleen Lawson, Director of the Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer’s, provided signage for the course.
With Julie’s friends on board, the ball really started rolling. They used social media to promote her birthday surprise and created a secret Facebook page to get the word out to family and friends. They also set up a team page on the Alzheimer’s Association website to collect donations in support of those who were walking, which allowed family and friends who weren’t able to attend Julie’s birthday surprise to be included in the day.
One friend had purple T-shirts printed with “The Purple Royals,” their team name, to be worn on the day of the walk. The shirts were also sold as an additional fundraiser.
On the day of their walk, a few of Julie’s girlfriends arranged pampering for her at a spa, followed by a celebratory lunch. After lunch, they drove to Hamilton Southeastern High School, with Julie having no idea why they were planning to spend that sunny, Saturday afternoon at the school. She was greeted by her children, Nick, Kate and Cole, carrying a bouquet of roses.
Julie’s dad Gary and her brother Troy were also present among the 60 purple-clad friends and family members in attendance who wanted to celebrate Julie and walk with her.
It all started with Joe’s brilliant and thoughtful idea, but according to Joe, he had lots of help.
"There were many folks involved in driving this event to make it happen,” Joe said. “And those that need recognition were Julie's friends: Heather, Annette, Denise, Amy and Shannon. Thanks to Jim Self and HSE for allowing us to host this event on their cross country trail, as well."
Julie’s birthday surprise raised $3,200 for the Alzheimer’s Association, and was a beautiful way to celebrate Julie, honor her mother and take the first step toward a world without Alzheimer’s.
"Aside from the wonderful donations and money we raised, which was of the most importance, the fact that we were able to get Julie to the event and it was still a surprise may have been the next greatest accomplishment," Joe said.
Joe created a slideshow of photos from the event, and can be viewed here. If you would like to register for the 2017 Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on September 30, visit alz.org/indiana/walk.
