Our VOICE, Black History Month, and Conscientious Citizenship
Welcome to the inaugural VOICE Faith Engagement update!
Please feel free to respond, ask questions, make suggestions, and more – consider this an opening to discussion about rallying our multi-faith efforts to advance black liberation because, as Rev. Denise Walden-Glenn reminds us, “There is no liberation without black liberation”.
This week beginning Black History Month we are again reminded of the disregard with which American culture treats black lives, as we mourn the horrific beating and death of Tyre Nichols, watch the African American Studies AP get banned by the State of Florida, and then scaled back by the College Board, barely notice that African American “Eunice K. Dwumfour, a 30-year-old councilwoman serving her first term in Sayreville, N.J., was fatally shot on Wednesday night”, and see that D. L. Hughley devoted an entire show on Monday to Tyre Nichols while Steven Colbert didn’t mention him at all.
Meanwhile, on the upside, talk of the latest renaissance in African American culture is out there in offerings like Amplify with Lara Downes.
Join me in finding some inspiration in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call for “conscientious citizenship”. Michele Moody-Adams leads her profound essay “The Path of Conscientious Citizenship” with these words:
“I contend that, for King, conscientious citizenship is a way of living that seeks to give substance to the idea that justice is indivisible, aspiring to an ideal that (adapting a notion from Josiah Royce) King called the ‘beloved community’—by which he meant a world that would allow reconciliation between the former oppressed and their former oppressors, and embody an all-embracing love for humanity.”
[This essay appears in this vital collection: To Shape a New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr., edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry]
Knowing that this vision is the ideal and that we must work diligently, and over the course of many generations, to continue to approach it, helps me cope with the vastness of the project. Each of us can make a difference by devoting ourselves to this path. It is not easy, and it will not come quickly, but we can only get there by working on ourselves and collaborating.
Wishing all of you blessings for a good weekend,
Jonathan

Creator Spotlight: @jdebbiel
Deb JJ Lee is a non-binary Korean artist based in Brooklyn, NY. They have appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, NPR, Google, Radiolab, and more. Their award-winning graphic memoir, IN LIMBO, about mental illness and difficult relationships with trauma, released in March 2023 from First Second.
Below is our interview with Deb!
Have you ever had an art block? If so, how did you overcome it?
That implies I am over my art block, but I’m still in it! I think about Kiki’s Delivery Service a lot and how she had to stop doing a thing, and that you can’t really force it, and you have to let it come back to you. It’s a pretty humbling moment, realizing there is more to life than just drawing. I’ve been trying to consume other content like reading or watching movies—anything that is not drawing-related—and to trust that it will come back to me. I think not being afraid to do the small pieces before committing to the big pieces is helpful. Because big pieces are what I am known for, I dig myself into a deeper hole, thinking that each piece has to be bigger than the last one. So yeah! Relaxing and doing the small things before overcommitting to a big piece is the best way to go about it for me.
Which 3 famous artists (dead or alive) would you invite to your dinner party?
I feel like these are all artists that I have second-degree connections with! Jillian Tamaki, Victo Ngai, and Tillie Walden would be my picks!
What are your file name conventions?
…What file name conventions? I mean, I don’t have specific file name conventions, but I actually have a public Google Drive archive! But I usually put “djjl_whatever-the-title-is_final,” and I would always know it’s the final and legit version.
What is a recent creative project that you are proud of?
I did an illustration for the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker. It’s so wild because I only had four days to finish it, and it usually takes me a week and a half if I rush. And honestly, it’s probably one of my best pieces from this year, which is funny. It was for the Mid-Autumn festival, so I made it as Korean as possible.
How has technology changed the way you approach your work?
I only use my iPad to draw everything now, and if I want to pretend that I have a steady workstation, I’ll use my Cintiq. I still am not as comfortable on the Cintiq as I am on Procreate, but it’s still pretty solid and nice. That’s the good part about technology. The bad part about technology is how AI art has been messing things up for me. I’m currently in a lawsuit about AI art as a class rep. Some of my stuff got turned into AI art late last year, so I have to give a deposition at some point.
What is a convention experience that has stuck with you?
Honestly, they’re all good! I feel like Lightbox Expo has been really nice because it’s truly been a convention for artists. I feel like that’s where most of my audience is, and they’re all around because their purpose is to be better at art. That’s where a lot of original artists do well because they’re getting art they’re inspired by, not so much fanart. I like the Lightbox Expo because it encompasses the pure love of art very well.
Top tips on setting up an Artist Alley booth?
Use a Y axis, not just your X axis! Take advantage of it! Branding is also something to think about. It is definitely something I’m getting better at. Having an assistant is also very important. I’ve also heard that 8.5x11 to 12x18 inches is usually a good size for prints, but I also provide postcard-sized prints because sometimes people don’t want to commit to a larger size.
Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?
You know this is so funny. I’ve been following @alicexz for over a decade on Tumblr and other platforms. I’ve followed her work since high school, and we’ve only recently become peers. I found her, and we met for the first time in real life, and she recognized me. And then I found all my drawings from when I was in my Alice phase, back in high school, and I was like, “Yo, this is when I was trying to be you so badly!” and she was cracking up and was like “Wow, this is so good!” It was such a sweet moment. I wanted to take a picture of her holding my drawing up. It’s really nice because now we’re peers.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing, Deb! Be sure to check out their Tumblr blog over at @jdebbiel.

Let the Galaxy BURN
so if anyone is reading this i ask you for a favor if you have access to facebook.
i want to surprise my employer with a bunch of reactions to a post i made earlier that just showed the new Horus Heresy tank releasing today with the others i had.
i asked people to react accordingly with the angry emoji if they were team hours, sad emoji for team emperor and go full chaotic with any other emoji if you were just somewhere else.
our social media presence is coming along slowly but definitely growing. i'm not asking you to follow or comment or anything crazy but if you respond to the "poll," it's the post from 5/26, you'd be my hero. unfortunately i can't do a direct link to that post but just the page though it shouldn't be difficult to find.

Britain's own Rupert Murdoch and his paper NY Post perpetrated a huge hoax on Americans by using the sympathy for veterans. What won't they do to stoke racial divisions.

Should I...?
Should I…?
It’s been a little over three months since my last blog post. I cannot believe how much fun I have been having living here in New York! I don’t want to forget why I started this blog in the first place. Whats also funny is next month is the one year anniversay of The East Coast Blogger! Can you believe that? Honestly I am just grateful that most of my friends and family either have not yet found…

Negative traits: Moralistic, repressed, pedantic, uptight, self-justifying.
— BIOGRAPHY.
trigger warning(s): mentions of death, brief mentions of petty crime.
full bio tbd. in the meantime here are all the main points!
Isaac Walden was raised in impossibly unpromising circumstances. These days, he’s swift to retrospectively credit his endurance to God – always watching over him, always nudging him in the right direction – but, if anything, his childhood felt like concrete proof that God couldn’t exist – or worse, that He did and He simply enjoyed watching people suffer.
His parents, practically children themselves when they had him, gave Isaac up on the cusp of his fifth birthday, having realised they were emotionally ill-equipped to bring up a child. As a result, he spent his youth bouncing back and forth between children’s homes and endless foster placements; living out of a suitcase; perpetually waiting for the other shoe to drop and to be sent off elsewhere. Stability existed only as a foreign concept, and the notion of having a home that would exist for longer than a few weeks became unfathomable.
He had a revolving-door of caretakers over the years -- some kind, others decidedly less so. The only constant was that they all eventually got sick of him. Isaac is less inclined to blame them now that he’s older himself; he was, by his own admission, a capricious boy. His methods of dealing with his emotions were never particularly healthy; he became a bare-knuckled fighter in his youth, prone to picking fights with other children (and adults, if he was feeling bold, from foster parents to teachers) and convincing himself that the person who won a fight was always the one who hit the hardest. If an opponent struck him back, he relished the slices of pain, the blackened eyes, the scarlet streams from one’s nose – it took him out of his own head momentarily, gave him something to focus on. Fighting provided a distraction, and, as a result, became a reliable coping mechanism for Isaac. People thought – or rather hoped – he’d grow out of it eventually, but violent tendencies were carried into his teenage years where, instead of petty playground scuffles that could be easily broken up by teachers, it steadily became more high-risk. Bones got broken, healed, then broken again, Blood was spat onto pavements. The cuts were deeper, bruises were darker and, all the while, Isaac became progressively more furious with the world.
During this time, he branched out into petty crime alongside his fighting – burglary, vandalism, etc – which led to a stint in juvie when he was sixteen for three months. Upon his release, part of his probation conditions involved volunteering and ‘giving back’ to his community; this involved helping out at a local church, a place he now credits with saving his life. In the beginning, he saw it as impossibly dull work -- sweeping between the pews and cleaning up candle wax -- but the priest, John, seeing something in him that Isaac failed to even see in himself, took him under his wing. The notion of willingly spending time in a church would’ve been laughable to him before, but it gradually became his sanctuary. He grew familiar with the scriptures, with the way the church was run, and fell in love with his faith. God was calling to him, that much he knew to be true. He had to answer.
In the years that followed, Isaac studied philosophy, then theology to M.Div levels. He was ordained at thirty-five years old and worked in the church where he’d found his faith, alongside the priest who’d shown him the path. The men worked together for two decades until John’s death in 2019. In the grief-smeared weeks following his passing, Isaac was unable to set foot back in the church, and took a year-long bereavement break from his duties. He’s only returned to work in the past few months, leaving his former church entirely and taking up a position as a hospital chaplain. Helping patients and their families with emotions provides him with a perfect reason to ignore his own. He stays at his hospital chapel beyond reasonable work hours, regularly falling asleep in the pews, and attempts to give hope to people while simultaneously questioning his own ability to feel hopeful about the world.
He has no particular affiliation with any of the gangs. Everyone is a child of God in his eyes, and is therefore welcome to spiritual guidance and / or for him to lend a sympathetic ear to their struggles.
— WANTED CONNECTIONS / PLOTS.
to be added asap <3
