Our VOICE, Black History Month, and Conscientious Citizenship
Welcome to the inaugural VOICE Faith Engagement update!
Please feel free to respond, ask questions, make suggestions, and more – consider this an opening to discussion about rallying our multi-faith efforts to advance black liberation because, as Rev. Denise Walden-Glenn reminds us, “There is no liberation without black liberation”.
This week beginning Black History Month we are again reminded of the disregard with which American culture treats black lives, as we mourn the horrific beating and death of Tyre Nichols, watch the African American Studies AP get banned by the State of Florida, and then scaled back by the College Board, barely notice that African American “Eunice K. Dwumfour, a 30-year-old councilwoman serving her first term in Sayreville, N.J., was fatally shot on Wednesday night”, and see that D. L. Hughley devoted an entire show on Monday to Tyre Nichols while Steven Colbert didn’t mention him at all.
Meanwhile, on the upside, talk of the latest renaissance in African American culture is out there in offerings like Amplify with Lara Downes.
Join me in finding some inspiration in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call for “conscientious citizenship”. Michele Moody-Adams leads her profound essay “The Path of Conscientious Citizenship” with these words:
“I contend that, for King, conscientious citizenship is a way of living that seeks to give substance to the idea that justice is indivisible, aspiring to an ideal that (adapting a notion from Josiah Royce) King called the ‘beloved community’—by which he meant a world that would allow reconciliation between the former oppressed and their former oppressors, and embody an all-embracing love for humanity.”
[This essay appears in this vital collection: To Shape a New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr., edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry]
Knowing that this vision is the ideal and that we must work diligently, and over the course of many generations, to continue to approach it, helps me cope with the vastness of the project. Each of us can make a difference by devoting ourselves to this path. It is not easy, and it will not come quickly, but we can only get there by working on ourselves and collaborating.
Wishing all of you blessings for a good weekend,
Jonathan

Police say it was a targeted attack. But she was a black Republican so the MSM see her as an acceptable loss. No air time for her.

A borough councilperson was fatally shot in New Jersey this week, authorities have confirmed, marking the state's second attack in seven days where an act of gun violence resulted in the death of a local elected official.
Russell Heller, 51, was a council member in the township of Milford, near the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was shot around 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning in the parking lot of the PSE&G Central Division headquarters building in Somerset, where Heller had worked as a supervisor for 11 years.
Officers were dispatched to the facility on a 911 call, the Franklin Township Police Department said in a news release. When they arrived, the responding officers found Heller had suffered a gunshot wound and already succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, according to the police department.
An investigation into the deadly shooting led law enforcement to identify 58-year-old Gary Curtis, of Washington township, as the suspected gunman. Curtis, a former employee at PSE&G, was found dead several hours later from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. Officers discovered the suspect's body inside his car, which was traced to a parking lot in the neighboring township.
"The investigation remains on-going to determine motive," wrote the Franklin Township police department in their release describing the shooting. "Preliminary investigation has revealed that the shooting was an isolated incident and Mr. Heller was the intended target."
The prosecutor's office in Somerset County said in a statement Thursday morning that the deadly shooting was not politically motivated, CBS New York reported.
"Investigators have confirmed that Mr. Heller was a Republican Councilman for Milford Borough (Hunterdon County)," the statement read, according to CBS New York. "The investigation has revealed that the shooting of Mr. Heller was not politically connected with his elected office or political affiliation."
Heller's death came exactly one week after Eunice Dwumfour, a borough councilwoman in Sayreville was shot to death in a car parked outside of her home on the evening of Feb. 1. Dwumfour, 30, was the first Black person elected to office in the township on the state's eastern edge.
At a memorial held in her honor this week, Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick praised her former colleague and friend as a figure who "broke through that glass ceiling" and "confidently, with class and dignity, walked proudly to her seat on the dais in her signature sparkling high heels." Police have yet to arrest a suspect in Dwumfour's killing.
Political leaders in New Jersey reacted on social media Wednesday to news of the deadly shooting that killed Heller, echoing similar sentiments shared in response to Dwumfour's murder that acknowledged it as a devastating consequence of gun violence in the area.
"Early this morning, a deadly shooting took place outside of a PSE&G facility in Franklin Township. Our thoughts and prayers are with Russell Heller's family and friends in the wake of this tragic act of gun violence," wrote New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy in a tweet on Wednesday. The governor had reposted a message shared by PSE&G.
"We are heartbroken at the tragic death of Russell Heller, senior distribution supervisor at PSE&G," the company wrote, describing Heller as "an admired employee" of more than 11 years.
"He will be sorely missed by all, and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time," said PSE&G. "This event is tragic and disturbing, and we are offering support to our employees as they process this. We are cooperating with law enforcement with respect to their investigation."
New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean, whose district includes parts of Somerset County, where Franklin township is located, praised Heller in another message shared on Twitter after his death.
"I am shocked and saddened by the tragic murder of Milford Councilman Russell Heller," the congressman wrote. "Russell was an outstanding public servant who proudly represented the river town he loved. My prayers are with his family and the Milford community."

For the record he was also a republican, so that's 2 murdered in less than a week in NJ both republicans.

A local councilwoman in New Jersey was killed during a shooting outside her home Wednesday evening, according to officials.
Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour, a Republican, was 30 years old and described by Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick as "dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents."
A 911 call reported shots fired around 7:22 p.m, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said. A female, identified by New Jersey Globe reporter David Wildstein as Dwumfour, was found dead in her vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
"This is an active and ongoing investigation anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office 732-745-3477," the prosecutor's office said.
Kilpatrick called the shooting a "despicable criminal act."
A Facebook account for Detective Juan Rodriguez and Pastor Doctor Nelia Rodriguez also reported that Dwumfour was killed.

"We are so heartbroken to announce that our friend, Councilwoman from Sayreville, part of our HRC (Human Relation Commission), our personal friend, a woman of God Eunice Dwumfour was [murdered] tonight in Sayreville," the couple wrote.
They added, "She was an amazing friend, a woman who loved God. We were just at our HRC meeting January 5th 2023 and I just saw her this morning at the store. I remember saying to her I see you at the HRC meeting tomorrow, not knowing tonight was going to be the end of her life. I can't stop crying. She was 30 years young and full of life."

It is not immediately clear if she was the intended target of the alleged shooting.
"Beyond her dedication to our community, I can share that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs in to her daily life as a person and a community leader," Kilpatrick continued. "On a personal note, I can’t adequately express my feeling of sorrow at the loss of a friend."
Community organizer Charles Kratovil also reported the death.
"A huge loss for the Sayreville community as Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour was shot and killed at approximately 7:20pm causing a crash near Samuel Circle & Check Avenue," Kratovil tweeted.
He added, "I personally knew her to be a very kind person and public servant. May she rest in peace."
According to her LinkedIn, Dwumfour was a scrum master, with a background as an IT Business consultant.
Dwumfour was elected to the Borough Council in 2021, and her term was set to run from January 2022 through December 2024.
She received a B.A. in Women & Gender Studies from William Paterson University, located in Wayne, New Jersey.

2nd N.J. Politician Shot Dead In A Week In ‘Dreadful And Random’ Coincidence
On Wednesday morning, police in New Jersey responded to a shooting in the parking lot of PSE&G, an energy company. When they arrived, they found a Republican councilman shot dead outside his car — the second elected official in the state to be slain in just a week.
For over a decade, Milford Borough Councilman Russell Heller had worked at PSE&G in Franklin Township., where he was a senior distribution supervisor. Before 7 a.m. Wednesday, one of the company’s former employees approached Heller in the parking lot and shot him, police said in a statement. Heller, 51, was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Some three hours later, authorities tracked down the gunman — identified as 58-year-old Gary Curtis — finding him in a parking lot in nearby Bridgewater Township. When officers approached his car, they saw that he had “a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Authorities are still investigating what led to Heller’s killing — one that mirrored last week’s death of Eunice Dwumfour, a 30-year-old Republican member of the Sayreville Borough Council who was fatally shot inside her car. Sayreville is about 40 miles east of Milford.
In a statement to The Washington Post, Deputy Chief Frank Roman Jr. from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said that so far, the “investigation has revealed that the shooting of Mr. Heller was not politically connected with his elected office or political affiliation.”
“This is such a crazy, dreadful and random coincidence,” Milford Borough Mayor Henry Schepens told The Post. “But there’s no connection with the other councilwoman, except that they both cared for their communities and were diligent public servants.” -(source: the washington post)
