The Fixes of Kings
Kings Call - no apostrophe because the game's horribly ported from Chinese - has some problems. Let's dig in:
Porting: Considering the kind of problem it is in Kings Call (a small pool of cards and effects that are simply overlooked and left in Chinese) I might attach a "visible text" tag to everything that shows text to the player, so that I can run a loop that captures all of that for the localization folks.
Monetization: The monetization is old. I'm not opposed to f2p titles that earn money for their developers, but there's a level of finesse required and frankly the standards for that level of finesse have risen since the 12ish years ago when Rise of Mythos (what has been rereleased as Kings Call) came out. You need to make it feel like everyone can get to the level of power that the whales reach eventually, like that number is reasonable, and like those methods are reliable. This is a tough balance, especially if you are selling in-game power outright. It requires you provide a period during which the whales can lord their purchased power over other players, but also a place where the f2players can compete on a more even footing.
I like the idea of a pvp option where f2players can take on the whales as if they were a raid boss, using something like the army value system from Warhammer et al. Even without that level of sophistication, you can handle things with rewards: Give something everyone wants as a reward for the "even footing" game mode, but give something that's more specifically precious to the f2player - such as ~50 cents worth of the real-money currency - for going into the arena with the monster players on a random queue. Sometimes the monsters will find each other (and a proper ladder system would help that too), but if I get trounced and I get a card pack out of it I'll generally consider that a good deal, you know?
Levels: There is, weirdly, a shortage of content. They ask you to do a lot of either waiting for the passive xp gain to unlock content for you or that you replay levels you already beat several times in order to speed the process along. It really needs a procedural generation system. And it has the framework that could make such a thing happen! It has values for the cards, so it can make a deck of ~X total power out of random cards. If they kept record of various decks' win/loss ratios internally, they could adjust the deck's total score in a way that functionally accounted for internal synergy - I guess this would be a little like an online version of KeyForge's modified difficulty?
Cleanup: Attached to the idea of the monetization is that there's a bunch of visual clutter. I get the idea of making sure people consistently see how cool things would be if they were spending money on the game, but this process of slapping billboards on practically everything makes the game feel trashy. Also, some of them are bad links, flashing at you and then leading you to an event you've already received the rewards for. This may be a matter of the game's age; Maybe one of these tabs was added every couple months of the game's original life cycle and that's why there are like twelve of them now...but it's a huge turn-off for new players. Keeping that new-player experience clean and snappy is important, whether you're unscrupulous and want to get them hooked or plenty scrupulous and just want them to have a good time.

Over the next few days, I got a little more sleep, but not a significant amount. We kept training our ultimate moves, and I finally got my costume back, trying out the new cables and enjoying being able to swing around. It felt similar to skateboarding in a sense, it was freeing and relaxing. On the screen of my glasses, I saw a giant rock falling towards All Might, and every hero will say this, but my body moved on its own. I sprinted towards him, sending out a cable to the wall to help pull me forward. My free arm wrapped around his torso and just as we moved, Midoriya kicked it out of the way, breaking it into hundreds of tiny rocks.
"Thank you, Young Tsukare. I see you've gotten an upgrade to your costume, very nice." I raised an eyebrow but quickly tried to mask my look of uneasiness.
"Yeah, thanks. Hey, 'Zuku! Since when do you fight with your legs?" My friend sent me a smile and jogged over, I met him half way, shocked with his new moves.
"I call it Shoot Style, I actually got the idea from a girl named Hatsume in the support course."
"She's a bit out there but she seems nice, I'm glad she gave you a good idea dude. And this doesn't mean you get to go breaking your legs now. Got it?" His eyes went wide under my stare and he quickly nodded.
"Got it! So have you picked out any names yet?"
"I'm thinking Shattering Waves for when I tear up the ground and Deafening Accuracy for my pin point break on the wall." He almost lit up like a christmas tree hearing the names I was considering.
"Those are perfect!" I laughed along with his excitement, freezing for a minute before relaxing as Yoru swung an arm over my shoulders.
"Pretty nice names, and nice saves to both of you. When'd you get your suit upgraded?" I fiddled with the gloves on my hands, tucking my arms closer to my stomach nervously.
"Woah, Onryo! Is that how you moved so fast? Can I see?" Midoriya happily asked.
"Dude, Midoriya, what was that? You swooped in and wasted that rock." I perked up at the sound of Denki and saw him standing beside Kirishima.
"I always thought you were more of a puncher." Kiri tagged in.
"And Onryo? Wicked save, were those cables that you shot out of your gloves?" I nodded and awkwardly rubbed the back of my neck, hoping to hide the blush on my face as just overworking myself.
"I am. Or, I was. It's these new soles. Hatsume suggested them and I really think they'll really up my game." I finally looked down and saw what he was talking about. "Plus, Iida's been showing me how to use my body better, so my fighting style has changed. I've only just figured out what direction to go in, I still have a lot of work to do. Nothing I'd call an ultimate move yet." I laughed as Midoriya still held his foot.
"Zuku, you can put your foot down already." He flushed and quickly dropped his foot, falling in the process. I laughed and walked over to help him up. "Great balance skills."
"Oh hush." He mumbled, his tiny bit of sass peaking out.
"I dunno. Based on that kick, I'd say you're further along then you think. So, you should be ready for this test." All Might commented and I stared at him in shock.
'Is he helping?'
I rubbed my temples as I processed what just happened.
"You guys made improvements to your costumes, too?" I heard my best friend ask the duo in front of us.
"Yeah! I see you've noticed we look pretty awesome." Denki said with two thumbs up and a wide grin.
"You two aren't the only ones here with a brand-new style. We've all been making changes here and there. Nows the time to upgrade, right?" I nodded along to Kirishima's words and gave him a fist bump.
"Just wait! My new special gear is gonna blow your mind. It's a serious power boost. Wanna see? C'mon. It's totally amazing!" I smiled at Denki's enthusiasm.
"That's enough, Class A." I turned at the sound of my Uncle Seki and waved to him. "Class B is scheduled to use this training room every afternoon." Denki started complaining about their poor timing and I placed a hand on his shoulder, watching as he perked back up a bit. "Eraser, get your kids out of our way." I rolled my eyes at my Uncle's theatrics.
"You're not trying to kick us out early when we have ten whole minutes left, are you?" I watched as Dad bickered back.
"Hey, did ya hear? The license exam has a fifty percent pass rate. That means your entire class might fail." Monoma announced and started cackling.
"Couldn't the same be said for you?" He stopped mid laugh and looked at me. "Shove off already Monoma, nobody wants to listen to your senile ramblings."
"Senile? Sorry ginger, but I think you have to flunk out to go back to the basics and learn what that word means." I rubbed my temples.
"No, I got it right, senile is most commonly in the elderly and uh, based on how you dress? I'd say you're pushing it a century or so. And you seem to be forgetting a lot, like how you were the only one in your class that had to take supplementary classes during camp." He buffered for a moment until I heard a very familiar voice behind me.
"Onryo. Behave." I glared at Monoma, listening to what he had to say next. "We won't be in the same location. Our classes applied to different spots." I raised an eyebrow cockily.
"There are two exam days. In June and in September. And the tests are held in three different places. We don't want students from the same place fighting. We split you up. Each school has at most one class at a single location." I watched as Monoma sighed and I bit back a laugh.
"How sad we won't be able to face each other directly." He announced full of his theatrics.
"How sad I won't get to watch you fail." He froze again.
"You don't have much room to talk, after all, you're fifty percent of the reason camp was cancelled early." In my glasses, I watched as some of my classmates heads snapped in our direction. My brother swung down and stood beside Midoriya, clearly waiting to see if he had to intervene.
"Excuse me?" I asked in a low tone, my blood boiling as I took a step closer.
"Don't act so perplexed. We all know the truth. If you and that angry blond weren't at the training camp, then none of it would have happened. We would already have our provisional licenses if it weren't for the two of you." He said as he took two steps closer.
"You don't know a damn thing you're talking about, you stuck up, pretentious twat." He raised an eyebrow and stepped even closer.
"Oh? I don't?" He gestured to my arms. "Just like how you couldn't even finish the job they started? What a fruitless attempt." And that's what it took for me to finally reach my breaking point. I reached up and grabbed his tie tight, watching the panic on his face as I yanked him down the small bit to my height. Hitoshi, Midoriya, Kirishima and Denki rushed forward, each of them ready to stop a fight but simply stood still when I didn't swing.
"You keep your fucking mouth, shut. Happy? You hit a damn nerve. So let me make this clear, you say one more thing out of line in front of me, I'll gladly take a suspension over it. Because you're gonna be the one on the ground crying, and I'm gonna be the one standing. All it takes to get half way there," I swept his legs out from under him and held him up by the collar of his shirt, "is that much effort. Run your fucking mouth again, I dare you." I spat out, fuming at what he had to say. He kept his mouth shut and I dropped him to the ground. I turned to Dad, signing to him that I was going to take a run around the school, needing to distract my mind, before taking out my hearing aids.
I hopped on the schools track and did a few laps. But even that didn't calm me down. I pulled my phone out of my duffel bag after an hour of jogging and saw plenty of messages.
Tsukababes Pokémon
From Scraggy: So that was amarillo?
From Espeon: Yeah.
From Rayquaza: Yep
From Venomoth: Do you think he's okay? I've never seen him that angry and he's not answering the group chat
From Pikachu: I'm worried too
From Boldore: That was crazy, I thought we were gonna have to hold him back
From Scraggy: I'm surprised your dad didn't get in between it
From Espeon: He was prepared to stop Onryo from throwing a punch, however he still allows us to fall down and get back up.
From Pikachu: I've never seen him that mad, I just hope he's okay
Class A Baddies
(Turtwig - Tsu, Typhlosion - Bakugou, Machamp - Shoji, Reshiram - Iida, Clefa - Uraraka, Toxitricity - Jirou, Bruxish - Aoyama, Shaymin - Koda, Machoke - Sato, Murkrow - Tokoyami, Mienfoo - Ojiro, Diancie - Hagakure, Jirachi - Yaomomo, Espeon - Shinsou, Boldore - Kirishima, Pikachu - Kaminari, Regice - Todoroki, Rayquaza - Midoriya, Venomoth - Mina, Scraggy - Sero, Whismur - Tsukare)
From Reshiram: Tsukare, are you alright?
From Clefa: I hope you're okay, Monoma had no right to say whatever he did
From Diancie: What even did he say to get Tsukare that mad?
From Venomoth: Yeah! Kiri, what'd he say?
From Mienfoo: Should we really be butting into Tsukare's private life like this?
From Turtwig: I agree with Ojiro. It doesn't feel right to ask personal questions like that, especially after he had a rough day
From Machoke: If Tsukare reacted like that, then he must've had a good reason
From Machamp: Monoma was outta line
From Rayquaza: Shoji?? You heard?
From Machamp: I was trying to listen to Aizawa, accidentally heard what Monoma and Tsukare were arguing about
From Typhlosion: The fuck did that shitty extra say?
From Espeon: None of your business.
From Typhlosion: I wasn't asking you, mind fuck
From Rayquaza: Kacchan, it's really not our place to say. It's up to Onryo if he wants the class knowing or not
From Typhlosion: Shut your trap, shitty nerd
From Turtwig: We shouldn't push into Onryo's personal life like this, it's up to him. Those who know, know. Those who don't should wait until Onryo feels comfortable enough to tell them.
From Regice: I'm curious as to what was said, but if he would like to keep it private we should respect that.
From Drowzee: Tomorrow before training we're talking to Nedzu. Vlad and I called for a meeting with him.
From Espeon: Are you okay?
From Boldore: You okay, bro? I know how hard that was, let me know if you need anything
From Scraggy: I don't know what was said but I'm sorry for whatever he said
From Rayquaza: Monoma had no right to say that, are you alright?
From Pikachu: Hey
From Pikachu: Are you okay?
From Pikachu: I'm sorry that douche wad said that
From Pikachu: He had no right to
I sighed and tucked my phone away, heading back to the locker rooms to take a quick shower and change into regular clothes. I put my hearing aids back in for the walk, knowing plenty of my classmates would bombard me with questions. On the path, I heard someone talking behind me. Not at me, but rather tauntingly.
"He's not scary, I should've given him a taste of his own medicine, show him how to really use his quirk. Maybe he'd have better control if he didn't lose his hearing." I tensed up but kept walking, my pace slower, waiting for him and whoever he was with to catch up.
"Monoma, just shut up already. You're being a dick. Tsukare's a nice guy, plus he's right in front of us, cut it out." Kendo chided.
"Please, don't you know? He can't hear us anyways. Oh and his brother? With a quirk like that, he should just drop out and become a villain." I turned around and stopped in my tracks, watching as Kendo smacked him on the back of the head and he stared at me shocked.
"Wow, look at that, the kid with barely any hearing heard every word of bullshit that just came out your mouth. Shocker, I have hearing aids. Talk about me all you want behind me back, but you leave my friends and my family out of it. At least when I say something, I'm confident enough to say it to your face." I said as I got closer to him, barely a foot of space between us. Kendo stepped back and raised her hands in mock surrender.
"You did this to yourself Monoma."
"Please, you don't scare me. I'm only speaking the truth. Why don't you run along and finish that failed attempt, hm? Or maybe you can get even more attention and have the League of Villains do that job right?" Suddenly he crumpled to the ground and I saw Kendo's large fist raised above him.
"I'm so sorry about him. Are you okay?" She asked sweetly but all I could feel was my throat closing.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Uh, thank you, for knocking him out. But I have to get back to my dorm." She nodded and I quickly turned and sped off.
'Do it.'
'You're worthless anyways.'
'Why am I still here?'
I took a deep, shaky breath and walked into the dorms. Immediately, most of them circled around me and started asking what happened and if I was alright and it felt like a dam inside me broke. My body felt like it was on autopilot as I walked towards the first person I could, not even caring that it was Bakugou. Sobs racked my body as I hugged him tightly, tears soaking into his shirt but I couldn't find it in myself to care anymore. Slowly, his arms stiffly settled on my upper back, which only made me cry harder. I couldn't stop the tears, no matter how hard I tried, they just wouldn't stop.
"Let's go to your dorm, ear bleed." Bakugou said after a few minutes and guided me to my dorm room. Without looking, I already knew my brother was following us, Midoriya and the others probably were too. "Mind fuck and this shitty nerd can come, the rest of you extras stay down here." He snapped at everyone before we went up the elevator and to my room. I curled up on my bed, tears still streaming down my face in what seemed to be a never ending waterfall. Midoriya sat at the foot of my bed, Hitoshi sat beside me rubbing my arm and Bakugou straddled the desk chair, arms resting on the top of it. "You gonna tell us what the hell happened?" I nervously started scratching at my wrist, Hitoshi lightly dragging my arm away and handing me a fidget cube.
"Is it because of what Monoma said earlier?" Hitoshi gently asked and I shook my head.
"What'd that dumbass even say?" Hitoshi looked to me and I nodded, furiously wiping my eyes.
"He started blaming you and Onryo for us having to leave camp, he told Monoma he had no idea what he was talking about, that asshole pushed his buttons and said that Onryo couldn't even go through and attempt to finish what they started." Bakugou's eyes narrowed into slits as he glared at the ground.
"Dont fucking listen to that asshole. He doesn't know a damn thing."
"Onryo? You said it wasn't because of earlier, did something else happen with him?" Midoriya asked me hesitantly and I slowly nodded.
I don't wanna talk about it.
"No. I'm not allowing that. If you don't want to tell them, that's fine, but you're at least telling me. Fuck the family rule right now, if it's bad enough that he got you to cry in front of everyone here, then I'm not taking 'I don't wanna talk about it.' So what did he say." I shrunk in on myself as Hitoshi scolded me. I already knew he wouldn't take it, but I was shocked to see him demand that I tell him.
He told me to finish the job.
"What?" Hitoshi asked as he let out a breath.
He started talking shit about me while him and Kendo were walking. Going on about how he could use my quirk better and shit. That I couldn't hear him anyways so what's the harm of voicing it when he's behind me. Then he started talking about you and saying you should drop out and become a villain, that's when I snapped and he ended up telling me that I should just go finish the job or I could go to the League of Villains to get more attention and make sure they actually do it right.
My brothers face fell, along with Midoriya's, Bakugou looked appalled. Hitoshi pulled me into a hug and held me, another wave of tears starting. After a minute, Bakugou and Midoriya left us alone.
"Can I have some time alone, please?" He nodded and gave me one final squeeze before leaving my room.
I sat there for twenty minutes, wishing that this feeling inside me would go away. That if I hoped hard enough, then I'd stop feeling like this. It didn't happen, I only continued to feel worse as I stewed in my thoughts. I got up and opened my desk drawer, in the far back right corner I grabbed something that I haven't used in years. The small bit of sharp metal that I found while moving, glinting in the light as I grasped it.
The bandages on my legs itched but I ignored it as I pulled my sweatpants on. Every step hurt, my thighs feeling like they were on fire, but I was finally able to feel something. Something other then depression and misery and dread towards my own existence. I felt ever so slightly more alive. My phone buzzed on my bed and I saw a text from an unknown number.
From Unknown: Hey it's Yoru
From Tropius: Hope you don't mind that I got your number from Eraser
From Tropius: Can you come meet me outside the dorm building?
To Tropius: Yeah, be down in a sec
I pocketed my phone and slid on my shoes, rushing outside despite all the lingering eyes watching in the common room.
Yoru sat on the bench patiently, standing up straight once I shut the door. I stood there awkwardly and watched as he pointed to the bench, both of us heading over and sitting in an awkward silence.
"You've changed a lot. You're not the same scared little kid at the foster center anymore." I nodded stiffly.
"Yeah, a lots changed. You've changed too." He looked at me and cocked an eyebrow.
"How have I changed?"
"You're more laidback. Care free. I have a feeling you either hang out with or work with Hawks a lot, at the very least, you look up to him. You act very similarly." He looked at me with wide eyes. "What?"
"I.. I always forgot how smart and perceptive you are. I see why Nedzu wants to get your IQ tested." I blushed out of embarrassment and shrugged. "Seriously, you don't give yourself enough credit."
"So what do you mean I've changed?" He smirked and leaned back.
"Well, when you were a kid, the second that blond haired kid opened his mouth, you would've hid behind the nearest person or tried to blend in with a crowd. Let alone you grabbing his collar like that. You fought back, and you swear like a sailor now." I huffed out a weak laugh and nodded. "You aren't afraid to use your quirk anymore, either. You stand up instead of standing down. I'm proud of you." I looked at him in disbelief. "I am. It makes me feel proud knowing you know how to handle yourself. I know you don't need my protection anymore but I'm still going to protect you." I nodded and swallowed the lump of emotions down my throat. "How'd you know I'm friends with Hawks?" I smirked and leaned back beside him.
"You act a lot like him. He's the one who flew me off the roof so I've met him. He's very laid back, down to earth but also exuberant. You see how he talks in interviews and during the hero rankings each year." He hummed and nodded.
"You got a point. Didn't realize how much he rubbed off on me." I softly laughed beside him. "Do you feel ready for the test?" I shrugged and tucked my arms against my stomach.
"I don't know. I'm somewhat confident in my abilities, and I know at least some of the class will have my back if I need help at all. But we're all at an unfair disadvantage, and I think Toshi and I are the only ones in the class who fully realize that right now."
"Disadvantage, how?" He asked in a slightly sarcastic tone.
"You already know, you lived through it. U.A. students are targeted first, everyone saw us in the sports festival. It's a battle strategy, pick off the weakest and strongest that you know about so they can't get you when you least expect it, then go for the unknown variables." He smirked, pride radiating from him. "What?"
"I'm glad you realize that. Do you got a game plan?" I shrugged, still not fully sure on what it is.
"I'll probably end up sticking with Toshi most of the time."
"Not that blonde haired kid?" I looked at him confused before letting out a breath.
"Denki and I are.. just friends. What about you? Do you have a significant other?" He blushed and I elbowed his bicep. "C'mon, spill."
"There's.. this girl. But she's interested in someone else." I gave him a half frown and patted his shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Yoru. What's her name?" He shook his head and leaned back.
"Nah, I'll leave it a mystery for you." I sighed dramatically and looked at the stars. "So, a meeting with Nedzu tomorrow, huh?" I nodded slightly.
"Yeah, and Dad, Uncle Seki and that douche canoe." He snorted at my language.
"Douche canoe? C'mon that isn't even a thing." I shrugged and leaned back.
"Eh, if I can put the words together, I'll probably use it at some point."

wait holy shit i just realized you can actually use quotation marks " in tags now. it used to be when you put them in the middle of a sentence it would break the tag into two and put the quoted word at the front of your tags which was a pain, so if anyone wanted to quote something theyd have to use 'apostrophes' . but seems like after ten million years thats not the case anymore O_O

long message incoming, apologies, but having been on tumblr since 2011, i feel like it’s important to tell people that shadowbanning genuinely does not happen, in any way, on tumblr.
the only thing that marks your account as a bot and limits it is using inline links on your posts to external websites. (brand new blogs also get hidden sometimes if the accounts have no reblogs.) there’s also a setting on your account that some people don’t realize where you can set yourself to be not discoverable in tags/searches (which might be changeable only on desktop now? tumblr had changed their settings a lot recently). blogs marked as bots don’t get their asks or messages sent, and their notes won’t get seen on posts. (note, this is different than tumblr hiding your blog for adult content, which you can know by checking if your profile photo is pixelated.)
spam liking does not make you or the receiver’s blog get shadowbanned. neither does spam reblogging (though nobody seems to do that really anyway). tumblr has a post limit for how many times you can post a day, but even hitting that limit multiple days in a row won’t shadowban your blog (i would know, i’ve done it several times on several different blogs).
unless your blog has been marked as a bot or otherwise suspicious, you haven’t been shadowbanned. tumblr is a broken website and sometimes posts don’t show up in the tags for no good reason. tumblr does a horrid job at organizing its tags. if you search ’#diluc x reader’ (the very tag you’re at the top of) on mobile, you’ll see that the top posts aren’t organized in order of most notes to least. they take (relatively) recent posts with a lot of notes and just kind of jam them all together. i went to see for myself (because that’s exciting!! your writing is great and deserves the recognition) and the first time i searched the tag, it didn’t show up, but it did show up the second time i searched the tag.
tumblr genuinely does not do shadowbanning (unless it’s to block spam bot blogs). everybody here is just yelling into the void and hoping it pleases the tumblr gods enough to not get lost. that’s just how it is. that’s just how it’s always been.
if your post isn’t showing up in the tags, it’s likely either: 1) the tags are broken, 2) you’re not utilizing the tag system correctly, or 3) the website shat itself again. when tagging, only the first 20 tags will be used for search purposes, and really, it’s your best bet for being seen if you put the important stuff in the first 5. anything beyond 5 is a game of chance. punctuation or special characters in any of your tags will also get your post to not show up in searches. apostrophes are kind of the only thing that’s okay. beyond that, you’re unlikely to see it. the tag ‘#diluc-x-reader’ has no posts show up if you sort by tags.
if your post has links to an external website, it also won’t show up in tags. linking back to your own blog or another post on tumblr is fine. (granted, this does break sometimes and tumblr will get upset if you link to anything.) tumblr has blocked certain websites from their links appearing in searches (such as patreon, ko-fi, deviantart, and red bubble), while others may get blocked randomly and without bias (such as ao3 or pixiv).
the search system is also broken. typing ‘diluc x reader’ and ‘#diluc x reader’ will get you different results entirely.
if your post isn’t getting notes, maybe it got piled underneath everything on your followers’ dashes and they aren’t scrolling far enough to see it. maybe you posted at an inopportune time and the search function swallowed it.
tumblr is a hellsite. it’s broken and by all means, we should all stop using it and find somewhere better. unfortunately, it’s the best we’ve got for doing what we like to do here.
wait wait let me organize my thoughts!!
reading all this, it seems like there's a lot of misinformation circling around 😅 i did know that shadowban wouldn't be the right term (I mentioned it in a recent post that it's more of a bug than the algorithm) but I didn't realize that spam likes had nothing to do with it! kind of makes me wonder how people came up with that in the first place.
there's much to say but i wouldn't want to make this post any longer :> thank you for sharing what you know and it would be great if others share this as well, just to tackle the misinformation on spam likes!
// side note but im happy you like my works!! aahsjdhxje for a tumblr veteran to be here makes me all happy

AO3 Savior And You: how to block out fics you don't want to see.
Maybe you have a lot of triggers and/or squicks. Maybe you don't ever want to read a #problematic fic. Maybe (like me) you just have eclectic tastes and are polyfannish and like to go tag surfing, but are tired of wading through stuff you're never going to want to read to get to the stuff that you find interesting. Never fear, there is a tool for you! AO3 Savior has your back! (Disclaimer: I'm not the dev, just someone who has been happily using AO3 Savior for years.) What it is: AO3 Savior is a script (or, rather, a pair of scripts) you can add to your browser so that any fic with an author, tag, summary element, or title that you have blacklisted will either be hidden behind a box that says "This work is hidden because ______!" (with an option to unhide it), or eliminated completely from the page. Unlike using the filters on AO3, this happens automatically on every AO3 page you visit. It does add a little bit more load to the AO3 servers, so if you're loading a lot of works pages in quick succession with this script, it will eventually tell you to wait for a while before you can load more pages from AO3. Here's how you do it. First, you install a userscript management addon such as tampermonkey to your browser.
Then you go to greasyfork and install the AO3Savior script and the AO3Savior Config script. The reason there are two scripts now when before there was only one script is that when the script updated, you lost all the customizations you had put in ... which meant basically you lost your entire blacklist list and had to start over from scratch if you didn't have a backup copy somewhere. With two scripts, AO3Savior is the actual active bit, and Config is just a place where you put the list of stuff you don't want to see, and you can update the actual script without fear of losing your list. Once you have the two scripts installed, it's time to set up your blacklist! Click on the tampermonkey icon in your browser, and then click "Dashboard" in the dropdown menu. This will take you to a page that lists all the userscripts you have installed. There should be at least two: ao3 savior and ao3 savior config. At the right side of your screen should be a little pencil-and-paper icon for each script. (It's between the trash icon and the bug icon.) Click on the pencil-and-paper icon for ao3 savior config and it will open up the script so you can make any changes. There are instructions in the script for what to do, but I'll walk you through it anyway. First you have the general settings: do you want to have the box hiding works you've blacklisted, or just have them gone so you never know they were there? do you want the ability to temporarily unhide things that are blacklisted? It's set so that you'll see why things are blacklisted and have the option to temporarily show that work. Then you have the places to set up your blacklists: one for authors, one for titles, one for tags, one for whitelisting stuff, one for summaries. Here's how you set it up. Each separate thing to be blacklisted should have apostrophes before and after it, and a comma and space between each blacklisted item. Here are some things I have blacklisted so you can see what the correct format looks like: 'not team Cap friendly', 'Leia Organa/Luke Skywalker', 'Modern AU', 'Alternate Universe - Modern', If you do not have apostrophes around the tag and a comma and a space separating each tag, it will not work. The first apostrophe tells the script where the blacklist item begins and the second tells the script where it ends, and the comma provides separation and a notice that the next one is coming up. But wait! you cry, I want to blacklist a tag that has an apostrophe in it! How do I do that? I'm so glad you asked, because it took a couple of years before I figured this one out from the examples given. If you wish to blacklist something that has an apostrophe in it, you use QUOTES to surround the blacklisted item instead of apostrophes. So it looks like this: "Grey's Anatomy", "Five Nights at Freddy's", Also! The script will blacklist EXACTLY what you have written. So if you have the tag 'Alternate Universe - Modern' blacklisted, it will blacklist things with that tag, but NOT things tagged 'Modern AU' even though the tags are synonymous as far as AO3 is concerned. The script is not running on AO3's servers, it's running on your device, it doesn't know what tags are synned and which ones aren't. HOWEVER, it does have the * for wildcard. Say there's a fandom you want to blacklist, and there are like five different versions of that fandom. If there is a central word or phrase that is in the title of every version of that fandom, you use astersisks to fill in the rest. So, for example, if you don't like the Law & Order franchise and don't want ANY of the shows popping up, you would put this in your blacklist: 'Law & Order*', and it would black out any tag that started out with 'Law & Order'. 'Law & Order' and 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' and 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' and whatever other L&O shows there happens to be. Personally, I find it useful for blocking things like Voldemort sex. I have NO interest in reading Voldemort or Tom Riddle in a romantic or sexual relationship with anyone, whether it's grimdark or fluffy ooc or a psychological exploration or whatever. I don't judge! You do you! I just don't want to have to read it. So I have blacklisted: '*/Voldemort', 'Voldemort/*', '*/Voldemort/*', '*/Tom Riddle*', and voila! No matter who Ol' Snakeface is partnered with, and no matter how that is tagged, I don't have to take the time to look at it, realize what it is, and skip it. That's the basics, and I hope this helps. Happy browsing!
Also, @alexseanchai has instructions for how to make it work on Android devices: “My experience on Android devices is, this still works but some shenanigans are required. Editing scripts through Tampermonkey is not apparently allowed. However, if you:
make sure on desktop that the config script is how you want it
select-all and copy-paste the config script to an email draft or cloud document or something that you can save on desktop and open on mobile
create a new script on mobile and paste in the config script from that document
—then you're golden.”

Check In Tag ✨
Thank you for tagging me @purplehearts1996 and @floralseokjin!! 🥰
1. Why did you choose your url?
Truly fell in love with BTS after stumbling upon the Bon Voyage series. (And all the crack videos.)
2. Any sideblogs? If you have them name them and why you have them?
No, but having lots of fun with this one!
3. How long have you been on tumblr?
Had a Tumblr a loooong time ago. Used to post under calmdowncheryl. Here is a sampling of what I would post about: Danny Castellano’s side eye, Parks and Rec, and Pitch Perfect
Also, if any of you are Mindy Kaling stans, here are my old The Mindy Project spec scripts from those days. I’m actually quite proud and fond of them. Aww.
4. Do you have a queue tag?
I use #that’s my queue because I love puns; I used it under calmdowncheryl (back when an apostrophe would end the tag); and I liked the idea of liking a post so much that I had to leave out of excitement.
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
First of all, Indigo, that was a really sweet shoutout. Thank you!! I’m glad that you’re posting as well as reading. You’re incredible. Imagine if you had never sent that message! Where would we be?? 💜💜 And I started posting again because I wanted to get back into fic writing. It’s filling my life with so much joy, truly!
6. Why did you choose your icon?
I really dig the artists at ICHOISM‘s take on Yoongi (my bias). The Warriors style it’s got. The whole aesthetic. The fact that Yoongi has an axe. So cool. SUPPORT AND BUY THEIR STUFF IF YOU CAN!
7. Why did you choose your header?
I love how much fun the guys seem to be having, and Jungkook bent backwards like that is equal parts adorable and devastating.
8. What’s your post with the most notes?
Hideaway, a Jin x Reader fic that warms my heart, and for which I am still writing drabbles!
9. How many mutuals do you have?
I’m not sure how to check? But I’ve been really entertained by the posts about xkit and “this hellmouth of a site” lol.
10. How many followers do you have?
548, which, idk, thanks, I-- 🤯 I’m not a huge account, but even with my old tumblr, I would have never dreamed I would have this many followers. Honestly though, I’m just having a ton of fun getting to know people, and reading, and writing, and sharing.
11. How many people do you follow?
534
12. Have you ever made a shitpost?
Yesterday, my brother and his gf sent me this photo of their cat, Kuma, with the caption, “an evening with kumsters”:
and I immediately made this in response:
So yes?
13. How often do you use tumblr each day?
Wait, do you... do you all actually close tumblr?
14. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? Who won?
No. We don’t have enough time for it, right? Too much other dope shit to do.
15. How do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?
Very fond of the style and memories of anxiety of “wait what if I don’t reblog” that would follow immediately after scrolling past. Very Pascal’s wager.
16. Do you like tag games?
Yes!
17. Do you like ask games?
Yes!
18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
I think it’s more that I can’t believe that the tumblr famous know that I exist, much less follow or even tagged me! (hi jordan omg 🥺 also still chuckling about “villain origin story”)
19. Do I have a crush on a mutual?
Yes! 😏
20. Tags?
Tagging some authors I’ve read recently. Thank you for your service lol. 💜💜 (Apologies if you’ve already been tagged!)
@helenazbmrskai (hi!!) @missbickerbocker @sahmfanficbts @svgahigh @jinpanman @adventuresinwonderlust @artistkoo @ppersonna @jeonstudios @burningupp @jjungkookislife @noteguk @cinnabun-faerie and anyone else who would like to do this!

What advice would you give to new fanfic writers? And, if you don’t mind answering, how long have you been writing fan fiction?
Hey there, friend!
I have only been consistently writing fanfiction for 5 months, so you may want to take my advice with a pinch of salt. I’m still learning and I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable as others, but I do have some advice for you!
Write. It seems obvious, I know, but do it. Put your pen to the paper, your fingers on the keys, your voice to the recorder, however you write - and go. Don’t wait around. Don’t “do it tomorrow”. Do. it. now.
Write what you want to write. No matter what you think the fandom wants or what others are doing - remember that you are writing for you. You don’t have to write anything you don’t want to, even if it’s a request.
Read. Read and share other’s creations in the fandom. Read books. Read writing advice. Read up on topics that interest you or are useful for your writing (i.e. research guns, horse care, 1890′s dress etc). Reading will teach and inspire you in new ways and research will make you more knowledgeable on what you’re writing.
Find your niche. Are you writing a ship? Self-inserts? OCs? A specific character? Characters? Tropes? Fics? Headcanons? Requests? All of them? Figure it out and find others in your niche or with overlapping interests and surround yourself with them and their content.
Be a critic. Critique your own works, but also critique others. No, I don’t mean send people unsolicited constructive criticism, I mean when you ingest media - think about it. Think about it’s strengths, it’s weaknesses, the parts you like, the parts you don’t. Do this with all media you ingest. It’s a useful life and literacy skill. You can learn a lot by doing it. If you don’t know how or where to start, watch film/TV/book critics on YouTube.
Encourage yourself! Don’t depend on external validation. Notes don’t mean anything. Do not judge the value or quality of your fics based on numbers. Not notes, not followers, not comments, not requests, not even how many reblogs you get. Judge your value on your own terms. This is hard, but you will be discouraged from day one if you don’t. Write for you. Write for fun. Love what you create. Create what you love. Be happy in your successes, however you define them to yourself.
Encourage others! Other content creators are not your enemies. They are not rivals. They are your friends. Love what they create. Share what they create. Comment. Like. Request. Send asks. Private message! Be nice, be supportive, be who you want others to be to you. Do not tear someone else down to pull yourself up - you will build your creations on a negative foundation.
Blog smart. Blogging seems simple, just post and go! But it’s a bit more complicated than that. Make sure to tag smart. Tag everything and tag it well. Don’t tag anything that isn’t relevant to your fic though, only tag what is in or important to your creations. Don’t forget to add a unique tag to your fics so they are easy to find on your blog! They get buried easily, especially if you have an active blog. (i.e. #hanateawrite, which is mine)
Create a Masterlist. Having a simple, easy to update hub for reader’s to find your fics makes such a difference. It draws traffic to your older creations that might not otherwise be seen!
Create Rules or an FAQ. This is extremely important if you take requests. Have an easy to access and read list what you create, what you don’t and what you like. This will greatly reduce your number of requests for things you have no interest in writing. Even if you don’t take requests, you might still want to make one.
Adopt easy to read formatting. Make sure your fics are “viewer” friendly. Break up massive chunks of text, use text formatting, full stops and apostrophes, titles, content warning tags, ship tags, etc.
How to handle criticism. This is different for everyone, but here is my take. There are two kinds of criticism - Constructive Criticism and Hate. The latter might look something like “Your writing shit, delete your blog”. If you get something like this, just delete it. It isn’t constructive. Don’t give it a voice, don’t react to it - throw it in the trash where it belongs. Don’t let it get to you. Acknowledge that it only exists to hurt you and that it can’t if you don’t allow it to.
As for criticism, it can take many forms. But it’s important to always view thoughtful criticism with positive intent. Do not assume criticism is an attack. Assume it is someone who cares about your creations trying to help and advise you, even if it’s not well-written at first glance. Dissect it and learn from it, even if you only take 1% of their critique.
Don’t be a workaholic! You are not a machine. You are not being paid. You do not owe anything to anyone. Write on your own terms, in your own time, and never at an expense. Take breaks. Relax. Have fun. That’s what fanfiction is all about!
And finally, don’t compare yourself to others. Let you and your writing be themselves. Don’t try to be like someone else. Only compare your creations with your past creations, not someone elses. Writing is a form of art and there is no “right” way to write. There are good ways to format, use syntax, descriptions, etc but there is no perfect writing formula. Your creative voice is unique to you - so only compare it you.
I hope that any of this helped. I can’t tell you how to write fanfiction, that is unique to you - but I can give you tips on how to manage yourself, your blog and how to improve your craft. There is so much fun to be had as long as you always remember that’s what you are doing it for. Good luck anon, I can’t wait to see what you do!

Ko-Fi Commission: LeaseBound
Leasebound is a “gender-critical” (TERF) webcomic that attained notoriety after releasing a chapter with hateful depictions of trans people, leading to it getting banned from Smack Jeeves. It’s currently self-hosted on a comic press site without a cast page, archive, or even menu, and doesn’t appear to have a patreon (and likely won’t, given its content). It’s a small enough comic that I wouldn’t normally feel comfortable reviewing it, except that the creator explicitly encouraged me to and appears to be getting off on the bad press.
The story starts with two characters finding out that they both rented the same apartment because the landlord was incompetent and double booked it.
And this particular landlord doesn’t have any other rooms available. There’s a host of logical objections to this set up, such as
Isn’t this fraud on the part of the landlord?
Wouldn’t a major deception like this void the lease?
Why don’t the women move to some other landlord’s apartment and sue the shit out of the woman who sold them a single apartment and surprised them with a roommate?
How does a huge apartment complex with at least 18 rooms have two people booking rooms that don’t talk to each other?
Is the groundskeeper also doing the paperwork and background checks? You don’t buy an apartment at the apartment store, it’s like a whole process.
Isn’t this just the fanfic “but there was only one bed!” trope taken to an even more illogical extreme?
But that road leads to becoming CinemaSins, so let’s just acknowledge that the premise is ludicrous and all the characters are morons so we can move on with our lives. Anyway, the characters introduce themselves as Jaden and Riley, and casually accept sharing a bedroom. They exposit a bit about how Jaden dropped out of college and Riley never went, and
Uh
RILEY: Sorry- I wasn’t trying to pry. JADEN: All good. Earlier you said you had a “few things” in mind RILEY: Right, yeah! I thought it was be good to set some ground rules. JADEN: You can add’ “more organised” to the list then too. Haha. RILEY: Wait, really? JADEN: Stories for another time
What the fuck? What list? What is Jaden talking about? Why is there an apostrophe hanging out after “add”?
You know how in PS1 JRPGs the translation would be really bad and sometimes people would just say weird shit that didn’t seem to have anything to do with what was just said?
That’s how Leasebound dialogue reads, bizarre punctuation and all. The add’ with an apostrophe is baffling, but I also like how “Haha.” is it’s own sentence with a period at the end.
Anyway, the rest of the chapter is about how Riley owns a cat but has to keep it a secret because she doesn’t know if the landlord allows pets and I guess didn’t think to ask when she was applying for the lease.
So, the status quo is established. Jaden and Riley wanted to buy a single apartment but got foisted with a roommate, but they’re happy because that means the rent is cheaper. Personally if I wanted a cheaper apartment and was willing to have a roommate I’d get an apartment with a roommate in the first fucking place but we really can’t keep complaining about how stupid the premise is we have to move on. So Jaden is in the living room and, hold on, sorry
This living room is massive. The kitchen has a fridge, and oven, and two matching sofas. In chapter 2 Riley’s going to fit in a four-seat table in here. This is supposed to be a studio apartment in Downtown City
Y’know, City. Not any particular specific real or fictional city with a name, but City.
And Jaden and Riley, neither of whom have college degrees, are so hard up for cheaper rent that they’re comfortable with the surprise revelation of having to share a bedroom with a stranger. But they’re also in a huge apartment in the middle of a metro area? This living room is nearly as big as mine, and I have three roommates and live in Cheaper Suburb. Why are you buying all this space at City square foot prices if money is tight? Get a smaller apartment, or if you really need the space get an apartment that’s not in the middle of City? The author of this comic is 23, has she not looked into getting an apartment? Bigger ones are more expensive.
Okay, okay, the premise is dumb. Let’s move on. Riley and Jaden make sm-
Why are you sharing a tiny bedroom if your Living room is party sized and has multiple sofas? Why not partition off some of the living room with room dividers from IKEA to make a faux bedroom with privacy?
Ahem, Riley and Jaden make small talk and order a pizza and it takes a long time and it’s not super interesting but it’s supposed to be cute and I can’t really fault a slice of life comic for taking its time. Riley’s worried that her girlfriend won’t like that she has a roommate (Riley why don’t you move in with your girlfriend?), and Jaden gets a call from work that they’re shortstaffed.
They’re so short-staffed that they’re going to send an employee out to go pick up Jaden. Can Jaden not get to work on her own? That seems like the kind of thing that would make her not want to move in to this specific apartment. Why would you move to an apartment that you couldn’t get to work from? You’re in the middle of City, and your job is a big nightclub in City, and City has public transit. You previously did not live in City, meaning you used to live further away from work than you now do. How did you get to work before? Isn’t picking up a Jaden a tremendous waste of an employee’s time? Even if the club is aware that Jaden can’t get in on her own and is willing to bend over backwards for her here, why not “Jaden, we need you at work pronto. Take a uber over, we’ll reimburse you”, which is dramatically easier for all involved? Why is everyone in this comic so fucking stupid?
Sigh
Well, Jaden goes to work, and that leads us off into the infamous chapter 3, “The T is for trouble”
We open the chapter with a bad-faith trigger warning that looks like a real content warning but is actually designed to get trans people really mad as Jaden heads to work and-
Hey hey, Rusty started putting links to her tumblr in the comic pages. Someone was expecting pages from this chapter to go viral, wasn’t she? Was the chapter where Riley and Jaden spend a few pages ordering a pizza not giving you enough engagement? But now that you’re the official #2 Terf Webcomic you get lots of angry people in your tags that you can reblog and be snarky at. Bet that makes you feel powerful. I know the feeling. I built my tumblr following by writing reviews and advice columns for five years, but you went from zero to hero in like a week and all you had to do was say mean things about trans people oh my god I figured it out
You’re Mary. Rusty Hearts is Mary Bradford from Dumbing of Age. You want the validation of the “wrong” kind of people giving you shit. That’s why you made sure all your transphobic comics had links to your tumblr and your getting pizza comics didn’t. That’s why you keep reblogging my ads for my comic that I place in your tags. That’s why you see me post the review and make a response like this
And you know what?
Nah.
I’m not going to include chapter 4. I’m not going to read it. I’m not even going to include chapter 3. There’s nothing that I can add to it that hasn’t been said by a ton of other people. I can post your anti-trans stuff and get the vapors about how bigoted you are, but at the end of the day I’m not the Social Justice Report. I’m The Webcomics Review. And your webcomic sucks. It’s boring, it’s stupid, it doesn’t make any sense. Your premise is ludicrous and quickly abandoned to bait and switch people into reading a political polemic (I did skim chapter four, it’s literally people standing around in a circle talking about how trans people are bad like a terfy Ayn Rand novel). Your characters are all morons in order to get to plot points you want to get to, and your first two chapters are a mountain of pointless exposition and characters being vaguely cryptic about their backstories.Your art is bad not just in that you can’t draw well, but in that you don’t bother to include details to give your world a sense of place, and the details you do include like that luxurious living room actively undermine your alleged story (to the extent that there’s a story at all).
But hey, you got your 15 minutes of fame (and zero patreonbux) from the anti-trans stuff. You got people to read your comic. Good hussle. Well done. Tatsuya Ishida does it better.
Leasebound gets zero genders out of a spectrum.

I'm sorry I was just trying to help with the "read more" link idea. No need to bite my head off. I don't even know what a white box is. 🤷🏻♀️
I just can’t do a read more on mobile and I feel like it’s weird for posts with pictures in it, especially when these are a fairly quick read. For Plotdale, i always did a read more because they were super long. Plus, I’m not going to make the post, save it, and then wait till I get to a computer to put in a read more just for one person (Not even you. I don’t know if you were the ‘please tag things so I can filter’ person in the first place). No one else has seemed to have a problem.
And a white box is referring to what you get on your dash when a post is filtered.
And I have gone and retagged all I could with “jennys robron rewatch” with no apostrophe so I feel like if people want to filter it, then they can. I’ll use that tag from now on.

eve of recording the vocals for my next single & i can’t sleep
so i’m writing it out, mostly with my left hand (and limited apostrophes because that is RHs job)
a spider bit me on my right hand and my wrist swelled up and the antibiotics didn’t work. similar thing happened to me when i was 16 with a centipede, and i was hospitalised for 2.5 weeks. But so far, i’m good.
so yes, the spider. that’s happened this week.
i had an operation and now i have a hole in my wrist. They took out all the bad under the surface and now i have a little cave. Right down. maybe a centimetre. it was like opening a door you arent meant to open
or a curtain at the theatre
the backstage.
it hurt a lot, the operation. But i’m ok! and the infection didn’t get into my wrist. A very good thing. the fridge broke also. maybe it saw my right hand and broke in solidarity. so i tell you this because the living room is quiet, no hum. it’s getting fixed tomorrow maybe.. the landlord says, but our perishables have began to live up to their name.. or die to their name... Tonight alex and i both made super meals out of all the left overs and ate all of them. we both essentially ate 4 servings of food. I think he almost put a full bag of cheese on his nachos. He has a flu so i told him hello enjoy the mucus darling. It was a competition for the best meals. with only my left hand i cut a lot of veggies to make my roast ft mushroom parmas. it took a long time. I used a big knife and a tiny blade. his nachos were ready in 10 minutes. it was hard to judge the best meal with the time difference.
I’m finishing my album and am having a relatively distant relationship with social media. it’s funny, sometimes when people take a break from it i’m like oh ok:) you’ll be back............. we’re:) all:) doomed:). but it’s good. I feel so tethered to the convenience, for me the little recorder, map, camera, & phone in your pocket.. but email, messenger, socials... going to things to be filmed, acounted for, captured, checked in at every place you go. Getting the tags right. Is this worth sharing? can you take another one?
In this time not releasing music i’ve been teaching, mentoring at my old uni (which gives me an immense purpose and a sense of pride, go inner nerd, go) i’ve been reading, i’ve been playing piano, i’ve been more social. I planted a garden in my back yard with herbs and flowers. It was just worn dirt when i moved in and now there are insects and birds. in particular these magpies that help me with the bugs. I’m so happy out there weeding it and planting things. I can’t wait for the tulips to bloom. i feel like it’s a nice meditation. I dont mind if the bugs eat my kale. my hands are too covered in earth to use my phone or get back to someone asap. in autumn we got so many grapes on the vines in our yard. There’s this pergola thing with old grape vines all over it. one of my fondest memories of this year was watching alex picking them in the afternoon with the sun on his back. i stood in the living room looking out at him, soaking it in. watching him try find the best grapes. deep in focus, leaning on things to reach. there were some rainbow lorikeets that moved in too. you could see their little heads burried in the vines. that afternoon light, just being still and slow and soaking it in. We had a weekend of not only no phones but no screens. since i was 17 i have never done that for more than a day. my work is a screen. my phone is always with me. We did 3 whole days, phones with do not disturb on top of the fridge. laptops in the office and it was genuinely sad coming back. i felt this weight and this mood shift. In that time we read cooking books, we played board games, we lit fires. I know part of that nostalgia comes from it being a novelty, but it was so so nice to break. important. obvious. i come on tumblr late in the darkness without the fridge hum just thinking about why im anxious or why i’m here of all places writing about how dumb social media is, but i think getting thoughts out helps. I’ve enjoyed months and months of intensity but no anxiety. A life that is full, but not crushing. A garden. love. a home. just enough stability to keep things interesting. buying groceries and putting them in boxes and doing a weekly shop. Sometimes with doing my art independently the crushing moments really crush. i keep myself in check knowing that im not alone. all small businesses, and all humans feel these things. the song tomorrow is one of the best songs i’ve made, i can feel myself grow as a songwriter, and yet the tone of it reminds me of being 14. guitars. strings. it’s going to be fun to bring to life, live. I’m anxious about the song tomorrow because i want my voice to be strong (so sleep and hydrate) I’m worried i haven’t finalised the words (so record options) Once they’re out of my head it’s better, because it seems like theres a massive list of problems and no solutions otherwise. tomorrow is ok, even if has this little element of the crushing feeling. take some space for you if you haven’t lately. get into the earth and plant something. adrenalin, worry, hope. all ok. for now im off to bed. making the music is one of my very favourite parts. sharing it with you is the other. the new chapter begins. x

THE CODES OF GRAVITY FALLS
@aceofstars16: Ask and ye shall receive!
CAESAR CIPHER
Notes: This cipher is one of the most common ones in the show. Each letter is replaced with a letter three spaces before it, cycling back around for A, B, and C. It’s also really easy to read once you get the hang of it - I actually became (briefly) fluent in it while I was reading the journal.
Appears in: Season 1, Season 2, the ending credits of at least six episodes, the Journal, Lost Legends, and probably other places as well.
How to spot it: The word WKH (“the”) is a dead giveaway. Other good tells are the single-letter word L (”I”) and words with more Fs and Hs than should be legal.
ATBASH CIPHER
Notes: Of the three non-combination ciphers in this show, this one is probably the least common. Instead of shifting the alphabet, the Atbash flips it, making it less tedious to translate - you only have to know half the alphabet to get all the letter combinations (e.g. Y is a coded B and B is a coded Y).
Appears in: The ending credits of seven episodes in Season 1. I’m not sure if there are other places, but I don’t remember using it much.
How to spot it: Look for lots of Vs, Zs, and “the” (coded as GSV) .
A1Z26
Notes: Takes up more space but it’s a nice change from all the letters.
Appears in: The last credit messages of Season 1, minus Gideon Rises.
How to spot it: It’s numbers instead of letters. . . and when you use it, it doesn’t turn into gibberish. You also won’t get lone fives after apostrophes, since English doesn’t do that.
THE TRIPLE-DECKER
Notes: This one. . . doesn’t actually have a real name, so forgive the sandwich reference. It’s a combination cipher, so you need to use the ciphers listed above to translate it (first A1Z26, then Atbash, then Caesar). The translation key I listed is the three of those combined because I’m really lazy efficient. Use whichever you want.
Appears in: The episode credits at the end of Gideon Rises, then the journal pages at the end of Season 2′s episodes. I haven’t run into it elsewhere, as far as I can remember.
How to spot it: Start translating the credit message with A1Z26 and realize it’s gibberish. Remember one of the coded journal messages in the end tag said reverse the ciphers and take it as a clue. Feel like a genius when it works. (In all seriousness, look for the word 4-16-19, or words ending with apostrophe-5s.)
VIGENÈRE CIPHER
The best translation key I can give you on this particular disaster is the Wikipedia page.
Notes: This is as complicated as these ciphers get. I am very good enemies with this particular coding approach, because it takes literally forever to translate things, and sometimes you copy down several paragraphs worth of coded letter and then realize halfway through that one of those words has four letters instead of three so sorry about that evening you spent writing everything out but hey at least it wasn’t a waste. . . oh wait
Appears in: The season two credit messages, the journal (aka that one letter with Blendin’s picture), and Lost Legends. Each time it shows up, there’s a different code word used, and you’ll need to find that in the episode or book. I’m still looking for about half the keys, but I’m sure there’s a list you could Google up if you didn’t want to spend all that time hunting every frame.
How to spot it: Try the other ciphers and get gibberish. Alternatively, you could notice that normal letter frequency is skewed, or you could (with luck) spot the key first and make a reasonable inference.
FORDESE
Notes: This one cracks me up because there is nothing more quintessentially Ford than creating your own cipher and then naming it after yourself. The cipher does share some symbols with Bills journal cipher, but they’re two different codes.
Appears in: The journal, Lost Legends, and maybe some places in the show (I haven’t gone through to check that last one yet, so it’s possible the show uses its own version of this code).
How to spot it: Look for mirrored Ns, upside-down triangles, and squares with dots in the middle.
BILL’S CIPHER
Notes: Technically a combination cipher, since the code wheel in the journal translates it to A1Z26. It uses symbols very similar to Fordese. (My personal theory is it’s supposed to be a mockery of Ford’s attempts at hiding things via ciphers, and Bill takes great pleasure in using very similar code to baffle him. If you also consider that Ford was previously amused by the thought of others failing to decipher his codes. . . well.)
Appears in: The journal (the key is across from the Trust No One page). I haven’t come across it elsewhere, as far as I can remember.
How to spot it: The triangle with circles at the corners and the two circles in a sideways bracket aren’t part of Fordese. Also the lack of mirrored Ns is a pretty good clue.
Anyway, that’s everything I know of. If anyone has anything more to add, please do! I’m terrible at catching things and it’s fun to see what everyone else picks up on.
