Surprise Delivery || Eugene x Reader

Summary: The reader goes into labor while on a scavenging run and Eugene has no choice but to help deliver. Some vague stuff about childbirth, nothing vivid. Reader eventually breastfeeds the baby, if that’s a squick for you? But it’s also natural so w/e.

Hadn’t he told you not to come? Maybe even begged? Absolutely he did, but not before reviewing all the logical reasons why someone so far along in her pregnancy had no business going on such a dangerous excursion, and so far from proper medical attention. You weren’t hearing any of it, as you didn’t like being made to feel like an invalid and you didn’t want him out scavenging without back up. Besides, there was no reason to believe the abandoned water plant was overrun or overly hazardous in any way- you’d just go, get what was needed for the solar panels, and be back in time for dinner.

That was, assuming the baby didn’t decide it was their moment right as you were halfway through transit to the plant. There was no point in turning around, you knew, even through the increasingly intense and absurdly painful contractions.  

“I told you not to come!” Eugene felt obligated to remind you as he helped you out of the truck and onto a pallet of newspapers and blankets he had put together on the ground. “I told you it was a bad idea!” 

“I never argued otherwise- ah!” 

You clung on to his arm with a death grip as another painful contraction hit you, just about crippling from the waistdown. “Why am I standing up?!?”

“You should be squatting,” Eugene supplied, helping to guide your legs down to a slight bend. “It’s the ideal position for aiding the baby through the vaginal canal.” 

You made a mental note to thank him for doing his homework on this, something you were reckless enough not to think to do. Then again, you hadn’t planned on giving birth in the middle of the wilderness either. 

“Eugene...Eugene...” you panted through the waves of sharp pain. “We can’t do this here, it can’t happen here...! What if there’s-”

“I’ll keep an eye out,” he assured, though logically you knew the only thing he’d be watching was you and the baby. You resolved to yourself then to make this process quick for the sake of getting to safety in a timely manner. 

“Can-...can I start pushing now? I mean, I think the baby’s on the way no matter what I do...”

“Yes, just...don’t go for broke until I can sanitize.” 

He had you lean up against the side of the truck as he searched in the glove compartment for something you assumed was valuable to the process. Sure enough it was a bottle of isopropyl alcohol that he promptly doused his hands and forearms in. Leave it to your husband to think of bringing such a thing along. Bless him for it, really. 

He then knelt down in front of you with a blanket and had you not been experiencing the worst pain of your life, you would’ve made a joke about how it looked like was about to milk a cow or something. 

“You’re doing fine. Absolutely fine.” He promised, locking eyes with you as he said so. And even though it was hard to believe that between the slight panic and overwhelming pain and the sweat on his brow, there was an honesty in his blue-green eyes that gave you the strength to push onward and do what needed to be done.

You knew what he meant. Plus, your legs were just about jelly after having pushed out the big healthy girl. 

Eugene caressed the baby’s head in a certain kind of awe and you knew you’d never seen him more taken or fascinated by anything before. 

“That’s okay,” you assured him. “Because neither can I.”
