I am not gonna lie to you people, i fear season 4 of the umbrella academy is worse than season eight of voltron

⚠️ WARNING: HEAVY DOSE OF SARCASM! DON'T TAKE ANY OF THIS TOO SERIOUSLY! ⚠️

...I- okay, so-

Let me get this straight:

You make a show about cycles of violence and establish it as the main cause of suffering

You establish the main villains as victims of the different levels of said cycle (Claudia - interpersonal / Viren - historical / Aaravos - cosmical)

You also give each and one of them a sob story as to why they are in the place they're in, one that the audience is very obviously supposed to empathize with

You ALSO also make the cosmic council child murderers as well as apathetic assholes and basically imply they are the cause of everything

...and we're supposed to root for said council to stay intact and face no consequences? There's no one above them, so unless they punish themselves there'd be no repercussions on them for what they did and eventually caused

It's been a while since my post about Viren in s6 and I recognize that most of it was typed as an immediate reaction to it, as in I could verbalize it better or whatnot. Yet I still stan with what I ultimately said, and while Viren is gone I'd like to reiterate that he was deemed unredeemable by the very creators and (to add a very important something) the fact that everything he does from s2 ep9 'till the end of s3 mostly stems from Aaravos's manipulation doesn't matter- cause yeah, after the pentarchy thing he would've been done if Aaravos didn't persuade him into going forward.

Taking this into account, plus the fact that they confirmed someone else might die, how am I supposed to think there's going to be a satisfying and rewarding ending to this series?

It'll go in 1 of 3 ways:

OPTION 1: Miraculous Ladybug style

Ezran talks it out with the Star Council (don't pay attention to the fact that Viren did far less demage and Ezran still gave him the "you don't deserve any [mercy]" treatment) because that's how he solves everything and everybody is supposed to take his "but love!" speeches seriously because hey that's the moral of the story so he's right! (don't pay attention to the fact that literally everytime he does this he never actually tries to get the person he's talking to to reason, he's just "but don't you want peace and love too?🥺" as if the show didn't try to make a whole deal about the weight of history's influence, it's just either you're a naturally loving person or fuck you) and they end up agreeing for some forsaken reason called 'convenience' and not only they change their ways but they also grant some big miracle like repearing Katolis's Castle, Harrow being freed from the bird (even though I remember vividly they said that was the plan at first and then changed it because it was unfair to Callum and Ezran's grief, but this was before the saga was greenlit) and/or the lava river being replaced with a garden or something.

OPTION 2: if you're manipulated you're still compliant therefore every villain is unredeemable

Aaravos gets killed by the Nova Blade and Claudia either kills herself because something happens to Terry or she gets killed in the process, maybe by Soren- not because it makes any sense obviously, but they already had him kill Viren that one time and we had no kind of repercussions of it (PTSD, conversations about it etc.) so they might as well pull another shocker that results in absolutely nothing narrative-wise, and since the brother-sister relationship that was oh so important in the first act now counts less than the baby glowtoads surely they wouldn't have a problem giving them more angst (aka the only thing the magefam is allowed to get out of each other apparently).

OPTION 3: the best case scenario still doesn't solve the problem

Claudia gets redeemed, Aaravos doesn't. Turns out Aaravos lied or only shared a fraction of the truth but Claudia will not find out about it (only the main heroes will) and the reason for her flipping won't even be about her character finally finding guidance in herself instead of always relying on what other people may or may not suggest- it'll be EXACTLY that by Soren or Terry (hence no actual character development, just a change of circumstances) or alternatively she does it to save one of them (hence no actual character development because literally everything this girl ever did was already out of love); the Star Council that still killed an innocent autistic child stays intact and we all just pretend it's fine because it's what the heroes wanted.

(...these are exaggerations of course, I am joking... but I wouldn't be too surprised, y'know?)

I hope book 7 proves me wrong. Truthfully.

Pre-S5 thoughts

-> I hope we get Keith back, his near sacrifice really scared me at the end of S4. I want my son back.

-> pLEASE let that poor girl get her father back. Oh my lord. Give him back. Pls. I can’t wait anymore. Will the real Sam Holt please stand up? Please stand up?

-> FRICK Lotor I know they’re probably gonna give him some backstory or whatever on him being a good guy but I DOOOOONNNNNNT CAAAAARRRREEEEEEEEE. I do NOT like him and they can never make me. he is EVIL and you cannot tell me otherwise.

Post-S5 Thoughts

-> my suspicions of Shiro grew bigger and bigger as this season progressed. I think I have it figured out by now. 🔍🧐☕️

->^Lotor low key ate her up with this

->^i think that’s her main arc: she needs to let go of the thought that all galra are evil (which she has fair reason to do so), as it is a war, and things aren’t all black and white. As much as I hate to admit it, I feel like having Lotor around this season will help her character development.

->^I wrote that at the beginning of s5, I was right, it did help a little (though then they brought up the fact that Lotor was half altean so maybe she just thinks he’s good because of that—let’s hope not)

->They did not, in fact, bring Keith back. Very upsetting.

->WE GOT SAM HOLT BACK!! THE HOLTS ARE BACK!!! THEY HAVE FOUND THEIR FATHER!!!!

->^That was an emotional episode for me. I cried when they didn’t find him in the “prison” thing and I cried again when Pidge ran into the hologram thing. They make me feel so weak. I was so happy when they got him back fr.

->^Yes, Shiro is leader-y, but he also (s1-2) tended to listen to his team and have unserious moments. I feel like he’s lost all of that. And I think that last picture is all I need to know.

->(moving on)There seems to be a big focus on Lance this season (yay!) I really hope it’s not for the usual reasons characters get extra screen time (because I would die). I feel like they have been leading him to be the black paladin with how leader-y he has been this season but even if that’s not the case I do still feel they are going to do something really important with him for the next season and I am so excited to see what they are going to do with him! 😊

->I absolutely LOVED episode five’s subplots. We have: A-plot) Keith+ his mom going on a mission together, B) Lotor +Allura finding altean stuff in Haggar’s lair, and C) my personal favorite, The garrison trio getting up to shenanigans with a galra robot thing.

Lance should’ve really seen this coming

But to be honest he couldn’t have.

Keith leaving voltron?

The same Keith that yelled at Pidge when she threatened to do the same? Keith who lives and breathes and would probably die for voltrons mission and what it represents? That Keith? Lance would’ve laughed a week ago.

Now, however.

He sighs as he watches him get into Kolivans personal ship, Lance wonders when he will see him again, if ever.

Keith turns back to look at them for the last time, Lance feels his eyes linger on him but he must be imagining it.

The sound the ships door makes as it slides close seems to echo.

  He’s already at the door when he remembers. Right, yeah gone. Keith is gone.

The automatic door still opens, mocking him. The emptiness of his friends room is overwhelming, even when there was not much in the first place. Lance steps in, it still smells like him.

He just stands in the room for a few minutes, already forgetting what he was gonna tell him if he was still here. Lance begins to realize that he honestly misses him. Their talks, the sparing, the endless teasing and the occasional secret glance whenever Pidge or Hunk talked what for them was nonsense or when Shiro scolded Keith for whatever reason. He would always try to catch Lances eye and give him a look that said, “here we go again” Lance would raise his eyebrows sarcastically whole Keith rolled his eyes. Both trying not to laugh.

Lance feels his shoulders slump. That’s just it isn’t it? Keith was, is, he’s not dead jesus, kind of Lances only friend left.

And yes, he loves Hunk a lot and Pidge too. But Lance already felt left out back at the garrison, Pidge and Hunk always understood each other better, had the same interests, generally leaving Lance out of their heated debates. He even read Hunks text books and still couldn’t keep up. Being in space with new tech and thousand things to be fixed everyday had made them the closest duo of the team.

Shiro is more complicated, being even more closed off than Keith was at beginning.

He can banter and playfully flirt with Allura but talk, like really talk? Yeah, no. She already had too much on her plate. Koran was supportive but he made Lance feel like he was talking with his uncle.

That usually left him with Keith.

Keith who was the only one that reassured him that he wasn’t the seventh wheel, even if he didn’t try to. Lance never actually told him how he felt, not sure of how he would react, the fact that he did it without knowing meant a lot to him

Keith who listened to him even if he had no idea or interest on what Lance was talking about. Who didn’t say much but was just there.

And now he’s gone, trying to find himself on the Blades ranks and near suicide missions. He suppresses a bitter laugh, just when he thought his team (family) was finally back together.

He realizes that he is still mad. Even when it’s been weeks. He is pissed at Keith for leaving him alone.

He also realizes that the anger is just a cover.

The corners of his eyes start to sting, he runs a hand over his face.

Lance turns around deciding to just go practice flying Red, god she is still too fast for him, when he sees it.

Keith left his jacket.

He feels his chest collapse a little on itself. He walks towards it, it’s much more worn that when he first saw it. Full of holes, tears and scratches, the red of it has faded considerably.

He wants to take it, but he leaves it in Keiths old room.

Walking in the castle always makes him feel lonely and small. Somehow it feels emptier today.

Pre-Season 4 Thoughts

-> Keith joining the blades is going to be a huge plot device, I feel

-> PLEASE for the love of CHRIST let that poor little girl find her brother and father. If they are dead dreamworks better be ready to catch these hands

->I’ve heard people claim this is the “last good season”, but i stay strong 💪 and will watch till the end

->wouldn’t the paladin switch not make sense now? Cus shiro is back as the black paladin and it makes no sense for Lance to be red like it originally had? If anything, he should’ve gone back to blue, and Allura to red, because Allura is very accepting/encouraging of shiro’s role as leader. I guess they didn’t wanna do it all over again. But I digress 🤷‍♀️

Post-S4

I am living from the fact canonically, Hunk, aside from Shiro and a bit of Allura, has gotten to closely acquainted with not just Pidge’s brother, BUT HER PARENTS AND DOG.

Seriously, the conversations with Hunk and Sam are so natural and personal, my boy stepping up to son-in-law territory.
