Netflix is crap, but these people are doing a phenomenal job within the lines that corporation is giving them.

It just dawned on me that the Netflix “One Piece” show using the original anime voice actors for the Japanese dub is a lot more complex than it seems. At first glance, it looks like the voice actors are just reprising their roles. They are already familiar with their characters, so it shouldn’t be too difficult doing the dub.

What makes things complex is that, technically speaking, these aren’t their characters. When Mayumi Tanaka goes to voice Luffy in the anime, she’s only working off of the script and directions from the director. When Mayumi goes to voice Luffy in the live-action, she’s actually working off of Iñaki Godoy’s performance. Even if you’re the greatest actor in the world and can replicate another performance perfectly, there’s still going to be distinct differences that will make you stand out. These differences could be anything, from dialogue changes to make the pacing work for the show to Godoy’s own little nuances that he adds to his version of Luffy.

It’s strange to think that even though Mayumi Tanaka is doing the Japanese dub for Luffy, she has to approach the same character from a different angle since this isn’t her Luffy, it’s Godoy’s. Same goes for the entire cast and their respective characters. It’s like they’re starting fresh.

I'm stealing this from my lit teacher but he posed that something certain characters in arcane s2 missed were 'Zuko Alone' moments. Moments where characters took an extended amount of time to introspect, face the consequences of their actions, and connect with the wider world. This, to me, is why Caitlyn's arc wasn't as effective as it could've been. After a switch-up, after a big 180 like hers, it is simply necessary to track the progression of her arc. It's easy to say "In hating you, I've hated myself" and "no amount of good deeds can undo our crimes" but when you don't see her face the Zaunites or acknowledge the class-privileges she exploited, it all rings a little hollow. Arcane usually does a good job of tying the personal with the political and I think that's hidden in Cait's arc. She works as a character when you're understanding her actions in relation to her love for Vi and forgiveness of Jinx. She doesn't if you think of it on a wider socio-political scale. It's just a little odd when the show is such an arbiter of 'show don't tell'. That line has to do alot of heavy lifting. Alas, what time restraints does to an arc.

What we learn about Dudley in the beginning of book 5 really mirrors what we learn about James in the SWM scene. Both lead a little gang of friends with whom they regularly torment others for sport. (We know that Snape is a favorite target of the Marauders and that what happened to him in SWM was clearly a regular occurrence, plus detention records indicate that the Marauders targeted others as well).

They are bullies who hurt people because they can and because they enjoy it and who delight in taking on and terrorizing a lone victim in unfair fight in which the victim is clearly outnumbered with no remorse or even sense of fairness. (Even Voldemort gives people a chance to fight back which is a better representation of Gryffindor's value of chivalry than anything James does.)

It's also notable that before Hogwarts Harry spent years as a favorite punching bag of Dudley and his friends. Harry, who was small and unkempt and dark-haired and underfed with baggy clothes that didn't quite fit - a direct parallel to Snape.

Harry is disgusted with Dudley's behavior and tells him so in book 5. And if Harry, wouldn't even let Draco steal a Remembrall, had gone to school with James he would have been disgusted with him too. He may take after his father in looks but they are worlds apart in terms of temperament. It's such a shame that Harry and Snape were never able to overcome their enmity and see all the things they had in common.

I will never be normal about Naomi Li. She had a hand in torturing a man who begged her for help, and when he showed up wanting revenge, she was fully prepared to meet it head on. She could have made excuses, or justified herself as just following orders, but no. She offered herself up as bait and she apologized before she would have been killed. She knows what she did wrong and didn't run from it. Even after she escapes and runs into Tanaka again, she is fully prepared to die. She never begs for her life. She's clearly scared to die but she wants to make up for what she did. She's compassionate but not naive, and she takes responsibility for her own actions. God, I love this series and it's takes on compassion and morality.

My understanding of Jason Todd's age;

Jason dies when he's 15, 4 months before his 16th birthday. He is dead for any number of time; it doesn't count towards his age.

He's resurrected; he is in a coma for 1 year, then catatonic for another. He is then put into a Lazarus Pit. (These 2 years are practically useless, as he doesn't remember them and they contribute very little to the story. They could be condensed to 2 months and it would change basically nothing.)

He trains for about a year. You can then give him 1-12 months of prep and planning time before his debut as the Red Hood, and the story of UT(R)H, at which point he would be mentally 16-17, physically 18-19, and it would be (--) years after his birth.
