just thinking about young dracula and how the biting works. they pretty much set it up as 'bite = turn' but if that was true then certainly there would be a bunch of half fangs running around. then i thought about something mina says in (i think?) the 3rd season, "they must've missed the vein" or something like that, which makes it sound like they have to get a specific thing, but it still lines up with the bite = turn thing because if a vampire is going to bite you, they're gonna go for the vein because that's where the blood is.
so what do we think happens?
personally i think it would make sense for them to avoid the problem of a bunch of random half-fangs by killing the victim after they bite them. Staking them through the heart or killing them in a human way to avoid them turning. or maybe it's only if they completely drain them of blood? maybe they just have to leave the person only just alive and then if they die of blood loss or get medical attention and live (which is unlikely but yk) they wont be turned into a vampire and die a human. i don't know for certain.
by the way, if i've completely forgotten something from the show and theres something really obvious then i'm sorry. i have started a rewatch but i'm going from S1 so i'm a way off when they explain all of that. if there is anything just comment or reblog haha.
also, on a slightly unrelated note: how on earth is the count (or renfeild) getting the blood into those glass bottles?

Thinking about the fact that Ingrid has two younger half brothers, one maternal and one paternal, both of which were passed off as her full brother when they were babies (Barry/Wolfie for only a few days, Vlad for years), both of which are given a name at birth that they don't use/go by (Wolfie was called Vlad for awhile, then named Barry, then called "Wolfie", while Vlad was named Adam by his mum and renamed Vladimir by his father) and both of which she is very loud about disliking and are at various points rivals displacing her as the Dracula heir but when it comes down to it she cares about them greatly and is pretty protective. And both are half vampires, Wolfie being half vampire half werewolf while Vlad is half human.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this it's just intresting. Like when they were writing the show I don't think they had the ending planned at all, or the Vlad is half human twist, so you can't really call all the things he has in common with Wolfie delibrate forshadowing but in hindsight it's really intresting. Especally the counts willingness to surplant Vlad with the new baby because at the time he beleived that his beloved Magda had finally given him a son, as apose to Adam/Vlad who wasn't Magda's and only half vampire making him actually quite a dangerous bet as an heir. And Ingrid imerging as the true Dracula heir in a lot of ways despite being a girl actually makes a lot of sense because she is actually the count and Magda's only biological child (while not legitimate since they weren't married, they are basically common law married and act as if they are a devorced couple so Ingrid is as legitimate as the count is gonna get) and also out of the three Dracula children (counting Wolfie in this group as he was claimed as a Dracula at birth and then the count technically raised him for a bit) she is the only full vampire non-hybrid.
Also the fact that Vlad and Ingrid's sibling dynamic is super important to the show and that they both end up with younger maternal half siblings that they do care about a lot but the primary sibling relationship seems to remain Vlad and Ingrid because of their expirences growing up together... it just feels important. Like they both having younger half siblings is something they have in common despite it being completely different siblings. (makes me kinda sad we never got a scene of George and Wolfie interacting and maybe teaming up to help Ingrid and Vlad somehow).
#Young Dracula#young dracula cbbc#The final season twist just makes a rewatch super intresting okay#Also makes me sad we never got grand high vampire Vlad having to content with Atilla Westenra because he was on the council#And his reaction to Vlad not actually being his biological grandson and the fact that Magda lied to them all would have been super intresti#But also like I wish we'd got Ingrid and Wolfie interacting with their Westenra grandparents together#Also the fact that Magda went along with passing Vlad off as her own to take the pressure off her having to have a son#Like if Ingrid had been born a boy then Madga wouldn't have let the count adopt Vlad#It honestly makes Magda trying to pass Wolfie off as the counts son way shadier cause she was surplanting Vlad with a trump card#He didn't know anything about#Cause he didn't know he was only half vampire and not actually Magda's#And she knew the Count would go for it#Really shady thing to do to a boy she claimed as her own son and raised for at least 10 years#Hella vampric thing to do those I'll give her that#I do wonder what would have happened had vlad not been adpted by the count though like what if he was just raised human ignorant of vampire#what happens when he turns 16?#Now that's a fanfiction idea right there

My favourite thing about the original Young Dracula show is that the Count and his kids are so obviously unusual (yes even Vlad) yet so many of the characters are just like “aren’t our neighbours nice ☺️”
Like the people who do realise they’re weird are like looking at everyone thinking what the hell is going on and everyone else is like “That’s Mr Count and his children they’re so interesting!”
#young dracula was amazing#if you’re into vampire and supernatural shows now as an adult this is what started your love of them#I had a massive crush on the count#which sounds stupid but come on he’s very attractive#young dracula#vlad dracula#vladimir dracula#count dracula#ingrid dracula

I've been rewatching young dracula once again, i'm at series/season 2 now and after rewatching episodes from season 1 that I haven't seen in a long time and don't go back as much as others, it's interesting to already see the difference between s1 and s2 Vlad.
In s1 his main goal is living a normal life and he wants to do all these human things (going to school, rugby, camping etc.) while in s2 the focus is more on finding a cure. In trying to become human Vlad starts to get a little more ruthless about it and is willing to bend his morals for it and does whatever it takes which is an...interesting development.
And when he learns there is a bloodfree alternative to becoming a vampire he also starts to consider that because his problem never was the title and the powers that came with it. While he was still devastated about learning hypnotism in the first season he is using it voluntarily for his own selfish gain and cheers when he gets his fire powers in s2. He actually likes being his dad's favourite and his son and heir and uses it to his advantage and is not happy when that's threatened to being taken away from him.
Vlad already had a bit of a sassy and sarcastic streak in s1 but they made him more clever in s2, a little more sneaky and cunning. He's also become more assertive and his future plan doing a peace treaty between vampires and slayers that happens in s3 and s4 is already starting to form there as well. It really feels like we're developing the character further and are giving him more depth and allowing his vampire side to exist and come out more while also forming his ideals and traits for the upcoming seasons.

i am still battling through my young dracula hyper fixation so to anyone who even still thinks about young dracula have this balls to the wall unhinged thing my brain spawned that if i had the energy (& if i actually thought i could do a decent job of writing vlad) would butcher into a fanfic:
vlad goes back to the dreamworld except he gets yeeted through a dracula multiverse where he meets versions of count dracula from 1931-2023 & after being scarred for unlife & after realises just how good he's got it.
#he would see some things he would never be able to unsee#1931!dracula is so over dramatic and bizarre to him but in a familiar way#1992!dracula is interesting for him to witness#sees garyoldman!dracula gets questionable vibes and sits there facepalming and valuing his own father's escape plans#vlad gets so confused by 2004!vanhelsingdracula#vlad sees richardroxborough!dracula and just has so many questions#thinks that 2013!dracula is probably what would have happened if they lived with uncle ivan#first question vlad asks if he saw jonathanrhysmeyers!dracula as alexander grayson is why are you american 😅#probably feels bad for 2014!dracula#lukeevans!dracula is even more depressed than vlad himself he feels bad for that one#vlad gets absolutely traumatised by 2020!dracula#vlad sees claesbang!dracula in his modern clothes and think 🥹 a normal dracula for me ? 🥹 only to get traumatised and more depression#2023!renfielddracula reminds him of home in a weird way#he sees nicolascage!dracula and nicholashoult!renfield going off at each other and probs thinks this isnt that different 🤷🏻♂️#also he would meet so many different renfields and van helsings so many cleaner renfields and less unhinged van helsings#at least one of the other draculas want to adopt him#vlad dracula#young dracula#dracula#kat’s thoughts 🍄

Rewatching Young Dracula for the first time in a while (I have it downloaded on my laptop, and shitty hotel wi-fi won't let me stream anything), and I thought I'd give my thoughts on it as I go.
So, Episode 1, Series 1. It contains one of the funniest lines in the series 'I think you underestimate suburban apathy', and despite being the pilot of show, it is remarkably consistent with following episodes. It does well to establish character relationships, including the Count's rather toxic parenting style (abusive to Ingrid, potentially unhealthy favouritism towards Vlad, a recipe for golden child syndrome if ever there was one). It also pays attention to vampire lore, including the rather obscure fact that they can't cross a threshold without being invited, Vlad and Ingrid having to carry him, in his coffin, into the castle.
I also have a few questions, however:
First, how on Earth was Robin hanging from the ceiling? He is not a vampire, and I know this was probably originally meant to be fake-out, but how did he do it? Industrial strength super glue on his shoes and standing on his head? Did he get his brother's to help (I doubt they would)?
Second, where did Robin learn to abseil?
Third, if the Count was out of blood at the start, how and where did he acquire the elaborate cellar seen later on.
Fourth, why were the steaks loose in that box.
Fifth, why didn't the Count ever demonstrate his hovering ability ever again.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts, I intend to make another post for every episode .
#also trying to decide if the Count being a toxic parent is a good or bad thing#obviously bad for his kids within the show but what about for the (mostly kids) watching?#in some ways a good way of showing what a bad family dynamic looks like#but as a kid i never recognised that it was bad#to an extent it sort of normalised abuse#especially as every parent (with two exceptions) in the show is kind of shitty#the Count is outright abusive to Ingrid and unhealthily favours Vlad#Eric and Mina are both overly controlling of Jonno#Magda is manipulative (and is acknowledged as such)#Even Graham (Robin's dad) is kind of a dick to his son openly thinking of qnd describing him as weird#The less said about Elizabetta the better#Only Sally and Elizabeth are in any way good parents they support their kids and their interests#young dracula#yd#when you're a stranger#Count Dracula#robin brannagh#vladimir dracula#ingrid dracula#vlad count

some thoughts on vlad between seasons 2 and 3
i have many, many conflicting headcanons about what exactly happened in the gap between s2 and s3 and how the entire family was at that point in time but one concept i think is interesting is the idea that vlad was drinking blood in that time.
obviously its well established that vlad refuses to drink blood and believes its wrong. in s3e1 we see him say this from the offset, however we also see him really struggle with being in a room full of breathers. most of this can be easily brushed off with the writer's trying to display that drinking blood isn't who vlad is, even though its what his nature calls for. this is pretty boring however and therefore i am choosing to project headcanons onto it <3
after wearing the crown of power at the end of s2, vlad collapses leading to the iconic scene of ingrid saying she neither knows nor cares if vlad is alive or not. this is where the blank spot begins. we know that the batteries on the uv cage ran out so the count could escape with renfield and vlad, however we don't know what state vlad was in at this point of time but we can assume it was bad.
working on the basis that the crown of power at least partially transformed him (e.g. gave him his fangs and boosted his powers, i then believe that he never went to the blood mirror on his sixteenth birthday as everyone believed he had already transformed, which then allowed for the events in s3e7/8, but thats another post) i think its an interesting idea that the count - unsure what exactly to do with this extremely ill vampire child - gave vlad blood whilst unconcious in an attempt to heal him. when vlad eventually came around he would deny this as treatment, but i'd like to believe that it is what made him better. to go along with this i think it provides an interesting dynamic that vlad is unaware that he was being fed blood whilst in this weakened state, with the count never having the heart to tell him that he had been drinking copious amounts of blood. its for this reason that we see vlad then struggle so much to be around breathers, as he went cold turkey on blood after he woke up properly. it shares some parallels with how much he struggled after biting erin - although it wasn't entirely the same.
TLDR: vlad had a blood addiction he never even realised he had because it was used to save him when he was ill
#young dracula#cbbc young dracula#cbbc#vladimir dracula#vlad dracula#count dracula#ingrid dracula#idk if this makes sense#i think its an interesting concept though#vlads blood addiction in general is something i wish the show explored more#when i say make vlad suffer more i mean showcase that he has addiction problems i don't care that its a kids show give it to me
