The Ghosts in the Castle
I've started playing around with a Young Dracula fan fiction idea that explores Robin's mental space following the season two finale. I'm also interested in the possibility of a small-town mythos forming in Stokely, what with the family moving away right before Ingrid started draining the local livestock (and eventually the locals). The Count was implied to have at least tried to keep a low profile.
Please let me know what you think.
________________
My best friend, Vlad, and his family were killed two months ago.
Mum and dad told us, the morning after it happened, that the family had packed up in the middle of the night and moved away.
‘Why?’ Chloe had asked.
Dad shrugged. ‘Maybe immigration troubles, or tax evasion,’ he wrinkled his nose, like the words carried an odour, ‘or a family emergency. Who can say? We didn’t know them that well, all things considered. Anything could have been going on behind those giant doors.’ He turned to me with a pitying smile and laid his heavy, far too hot hand on my shoulder. ‘I’m sure Vlad will reach out once things have settled.’
Vlad wouldn’t reach out. I knew it then and I know it now. Just like I know, despite what my mother would have everyone believe, that I was at the castle that night.
What I don’t know is what happened there—but I have theories. Absence is a presence in and of itself, after all.
I’m full of holes. Pieces of myself were sliced out that night and have since gone missing. Chloe explained the concept of repressed memories and advised me not to try and dig them out, as the brain is good at playing tricks on itself. She believes me, but she’s also heard the rumours, and she’s trepidatious of how they might influence me.
When you repeat something enough, it becomes fact. Let enough time pass and the story, the reconstruction, and the memory will all bleed into one, never able to be completely disentangled. Everyone has those memories, the ones of things that happened when you were a child, constructed entirely from stories told one too many times at family get-togethers or while reminiscing over tea. Or maybe it isn’t a story, but a photograph that you’ve been glancing at for years, until you start to remember the day it was taken. False memories, Chloe called them. They’re what happen when you let other people convince you of what you should remember.
Sometimes my dreams feel like drafts sweeping through those holes. Not quite memories, but not normal dreams, either. Something born from corrupted images, discarded thoughts and forgotten conversations. Unlike Chloe, I don’t believe the barrier between our thoughts and objective reality is exactly definitive. It’s more like a gradient. Reality, our perception of it, what we remember afterwards—it's all a matter of cognition. That is to say, I know that just because I think something that doesn’t mean it happened, but if I dream it enough, I’m afraid it’ll become real.
I have theories, which are built around the things I know for sure. Something happened that night, which my brain considers traumatic. This event either relates to things that had happened before, or was severe enough to have a ripple effect, tearing holes into memories spanning the past year. Memories pertaining to Vlad. The event preceded, included, or followed the death of Vlad and his entire family.
These are the things Chloe and I have agreed on. We are also in agreement that our parents must know something about what happened, but they have chosen to lie to us. They insist I was with them at a party that night. I would remember that.
I try not to listen to the rumours, but that’s impossible when it’s seemingly all anyone wants to talk about.
The Count family died Friday night. Ingrid was young, and pretty, and well-known among the locals. Well-liked, they claim, and such tragedies are so romantic.
There were rumours by Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night, something went sculking around old Jenkin’s farm and drained all the blood from one of the sheep. It stood upright, Jenkin’s son told the papers, though it didn’t walk so much as float. It was ethereal, with its billowing cloak and the single pale hand it used to beckon the sheep, luring it away as if in some trance. He didn’t dare approach it.
By Monday, everyone had their own versions of what was going on.

Yes, to all of this.
I personally headcanon that all vampires are bi, given that they're hedonistic by nature and can reproduce through biting (increases race numbers and family size without sex), they just err towards hetero relationships for the sake of status.
Vampires from noble families, like the Dracula's, are expected to marry the opposite sex to keep the bloodline going, therefore providing more opportunities for political progress and internal wealth distribution. This also plays into the commodification of women. The male heirs need wives, not husbands, because a husband would be their social equal and therefore capable of redistributing their wealth towards their own family, while women are considered to be part of whatever household they marry into. Daughters are only valuable because they can be given to other families as brides, securing status and connections through the promise of someone to birth the next heir. This is a system created not to push compulsory heterosexuality, but to maintain the control of already powerful families. We saw in canon how important family connections and political power are.
Sex and romance exist separately from marriage in the vampire world, with sex and romance being viewed as acts of pleasure, and marriage as a responsibility to their family. I like to think vampires are very accepting of, and open about, all forms of sexuality, so long as they don't interfere with familial responsibility.
Also--new topic, but I refuse to believe that the memory wipe worked on Robin. Season 4 retconned the hypnosis rules, making it so that you can't hypnotise a breather you love in general, not just one you're IN love with. While Vlad's inability to hypnotise Jonno could be read as romance-coded, I don't think they would have been nearly as casual about it if either thought that was the case, given that the Vlad/Erin storyline was still in progress.
Robin and Vlad as an adult couple would be a trip, given Robin always seemed so torn between being in aw of vampires and being afraid of them. He had multiple moments of genuine fear, while still continuing to spend time at the castle and maintaining that vampires are cool. I think he would be enthralled by the new Vlad, but once the thrill died down a part of him would mourn the feeling of safety he had around him as a teen.
Robin is gay, btw, because I have serious trouble reading a vampire obsessed goth boy as straight, and he didn't fall over Ingrid anywhere near as much as every other teen boy in the show, despite her supernatural thrall.
some young dracula thoughts that have crossed my silly little head
i've said it before i'll say it again vlad is bi
he also swears in welsh as the count doesn't understand
he just swears a lot in general
no theres literally evidence for this in the show when he says wtf in the walkee talkees with bertrand
i picture the show with a lot more tradition than is actually shown and love the idea of vlad being referred to as viscount/just generally his status in the nobility being shown
vlad becoming even more morally grey and reconnecting with someone from his past maybe its robin maybe its jono but them seeing him and just being like ??? bc what happened to the vlad they knew
robin!! he also gains his memory back and goes looking for vlad
ingrid finally gains peace and she's happy
honestly i have more that i just can't think of but here we are i just wanted to dump them maybe i'll make another post in the future

I loved this show as a kid and I’ve always loved Vlad so here are some Queer headcanons about him!
I like to believe that he is pansexual.
He is attracted to many genders though this isn’t something he understood in terms until he got a little older as he grew up in the early 2000s and it wasn’t discussed as much.
I definitely believe that he had a tiny crush on Robin. He saw this energetic and excitable boy and instantly felt connected to him. It started out as friendship but he definitely started falling for him after a month or two. (I’m forever mad that we lost Robin 😭)
He didn’t reveal to the count about any of his attraction towards men or anyone else as he wasn’t entirely sure when he younger how he’d react. I think eventually the count wouldn’t care as long as vlad still stated as his heir.
He definitely talked about it to zoltan as he felt that he was the only one in his family that actually listened to him.
I think that him being queer is literally the only thing Ingrid ever kept secret about him when they were quite young. She loved tormenting him and bullying him but even she didn’t want to hurt her brother in any way that could out him.
On a side note I think Ingrid is also Queer I just don’t see her as straight. (Fun fact: Ingrid is one of the characters that I had a crush on as a kid that I didn’t realise was a crush that helped me realise I was bi later on)
As much as he protested being a vampire as a kid his type is very much gothic or emo once he gets older.
He really cared about Erin.
He’s definitely the type to fall fast.
Would love a version where Vlad is able to reunite with Robin and help him gain his memories back. In my version they’d develop crushes again and get together.
