Wyandotte Chickens Visual Research

Part of the A-Z of Birds project is to include a wide range of bird types to prevent the illustrations becoming similar from page to page. I knew that I wanted to include a type of chicken as I'd not yet included any domesticated animals.

I was immediately drawn to the Wyandotte chickens, not only would that fit for the letter 'W' (a letter with less bird options!) but their feathers have this beautiful print like quality. With bold outlines to each feather, I felt that it would translate well to an risograph print.

The Backup Ukraine app (D&AD winner)

The Backup Ukraine app uses extended reality and allows people to recreate 3D models of sculptures, protecting cultural heritage from complete destruction during the war with Russia. This project is significantly relevant and important for the future of Ukraine. It's not only creative but highly purposeful.

Palyanytsa by Daria Michri from Against War Gallery

Palyanytsa is a type of Ukrainian bread that is similar to sourdough. In the middle of the poster in black it says 'word or death' in Ukrainian. I couldn't find a description to Daria's piece, but from my understanding, she tried to emphasise the importance of Ukrainian traditions and cultural heritage. The use of 'word or death' is a common way of phrasing war slogans. In the history 'freedom or death', 'victory or death' were commonly used in wars as mottoes or battle cries, phrases that soldiers shout when going in a battle. I think in this poster Daria used this motif to highlight the importance of cultural values that can be found in words. Her artwork made it to an exhibition in Hamburg. In her instagram post she mentions how she was worried that visitors won't understand the meaning of the poster because of the language barrier. However, she solved this problem successfully by placing traditional table cloth and bread on a pillar.

Visually, I loved the chosen typeface and the way she utilised it, merging some of the letters (Ц and Н) together for fluidity and complexity. This typeface looks traditional and old-fashioned due to its serifs and unusual curves. I think it communicates her message successfully. The use of red, white and black reminds the viewer of war themes and translates the meaning behind the project.

She also illustrated sunflowers which are quite symbolic in Ukraine. They represent peace and resilience, and are seen a lot in war art. They also have a historical significance: "after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986, Ukrainians planted sunflowers in the devastated area. The flowers not only represented renewal and hope, but they helped extract toxins from the soil" (from 1800flowers).

Alongside my research-based practice, which occupies much of my time, I love to unwind with some digital doodling. ✂️🖥️

Since my physical collage materials are back up north, I’ve been working with scans and found online ephemera to create these digital collages. It’s a way to keep my hands and mind loose, and these playful experiments often influence my work later on.

By exploring how textures, colors, and compositions come together, I discover new combinations that I can incorporate into future projects. I thrive when I can lay everything out in front of me, curating and arranging until it feels just right.

But beyond the creative exploration, these collages remind me that design isn’t just my job—it’s also my hobby. Sometimes, I create purely for fun, with no end goal other than to maintain my mental health and keep my creative mind active. 🧠✨

Toca Toucans

Although potentially predictable for the letter 'T' I decided that I must include Toucan's within the ABC of birds. Different in shape and statue than any of the other birds I've draw thus far I felt that they would maintain the readers interest.

For visual research I spent a lot of time looking at the photos and videos of Brock Afentul, a content creator who runs a Toucan sanctuary in America. His photos and videos show close up the birds and their personalities.

Illustration

One thing I really wanted to capture within this illustration is the sense of the canopy of trees. The sun reflecting off the leaves and the shadows below. Within the limitation of using only four colours getting depth can be difficult.

If my first copy the higher saturation of the yellow paired the black shadow created a sallow tone that made the leaves read as unhealthy.

In my second version I was much happier with the shade of green created.
