Life Update...

I just paid my tuition, so it seems like it's time to let the cat out of the bag. So long as my visa isn't randomly rejected, I'll be moving to Japan in spring of next year! I'll be there for one year at the very least, the plan is to be there for three to four years, but depending on how it goes and how everything pans out, I won't deny the possibility of moving there permanently.

My first plan of action is attending a language school, basically until I pass the N2. Right now I'd put myself at about halfway there, so my hope is to only spend one year in the language school. After that, and this is a big reason for my moving to Japan, I'll apply to a trade school for instrument repair. For those who don't know, I have a degree in music performance. While in university, I met someone who ended up moving back to Japan to get certified in instrument repair, and that's the school I'll be applying to! Instrument repair is an incredibly hard industry to break into in the United States, where I'm from and live right now, because there aren't any schools that offer courses in it.

Without saying exactly where I'll be, I am going to be in the Kansai region. I wasn't initially sure if I wanted to be outside of Tokyo for my first time living in Japan, but when I reached out to GoGoNihon and they recommended a Kansai school, it felt like fate. Kansai-ben is my favorite dialect of Japanese and it's been a far off pie-in-the-sky dream of mine to speak it effortlessly ever since I started learning Japanese.

Needless to say, I am excessively excited about this new journey in my life. And with that, please (please!) tell me your favorite spots in Japan, whether they're underrated hidden gems or tourist traps that everyone and their dog has been to. I want to know! Location and prefecture doesn't matter- with how long I'll be in the country, I'd like to take the opportunity to travel as much of it as I can. It also doesn't matter what it is. Tell me about your favorite roadside shrine, a great restaurant you went to, or your favorite specialty store. I also don't have an expiration date on this. If you want to tell me about somewhere in the next ten minutes, that's great, but I would also love to hear about it three weeks or even three months from now.

Any denial due to service is likely due to a security risk, and has applied to other countries with mandatory military service.

So i wouldn't say it's because they're Israeli.

New Zealand has decent relations with Israel. Both our militaries have gotten along before at training events. The current government has no plans of sanctioning Israel.

The NZDF cannot buy Israeli weapons, but we can (and do) use an Israeli company as the middle man for purchasing weapons.

Tbf we can't really afford to cut ties with any country which has good military capabilities. Our military is sooo fucking shit. We would not be able to defend ourselves against an invasion. We literally rely on Australia if that ever happens lol. Literally we had a massive navy ship sink last year because someone forgot to turn off auto pilot 😭. And we cannot afford to the replace the ship either.

The first two paragraphs of this Washington Post report from Saturday are simply amazing:

Israel will begin implementing sweeping new visa and registration rules for international aid organizations operating in the Palestinian territories, introducing restrictions that humanitarian groups say would politicize their work, put local and international staff at risk and undermine relief efforts in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The measures, which Israel announced this week, give officials broad authority to reject the registration of nongovernmental organizations providing assistance to Palestinians using a far-reaching set of guidelines. Among the criteria: whether an NGO or its employees have ever called for a boycott of Israel, denied its existence “as a Jewish and democratic state,” or expressed support for legal proceedings against Israeli citizens in international courts for acts carried out while serving in the military or any security agency.

Virtually every aid agency insists that its mission is non-political. So when Israel is asking them whether they are adhering to their own standards, if they weren't political, they should be happy to be transparent about their positions and their standards for hiring workers who are also unbiased.

It isn't Israel that is politicizing their work - Israel is trying to only work with NGOs who haven't taken political positions against Israel, as they claim they do!

The article goes on to say that "Israel has also repeated, without evidence, its long-standing charges — denied by aid agencies — that the assistance going to Gaza is being diverted to Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that rules the enclave."

There are numerous videos and photos showing that theft.

No one can deny that goods that entered Gaza and should be distributed for free, like baby formula, diapers and flour, are being sold in the markets at high prices. Earlier in the war Hamas claimed to send out gangs to "confiscate" goods being sold for high prices where they claimed they then sold for reasonable prices - but shouldn't the goods have been given away to begin with? 

Gazans know the truth and say it all the time, but that is not good enough for the media like the Washington Post.

A Pakistani migrant convicted of sexually assaulting a woman has been allowed to remain in Britain after claiming he is gay.

The 53-year-old sex offender had been living in the UK illegally for 11 years before being granted refugee status.

He argued he would face persecution in Pakistan due to his sexuality, in breach of his human rights - a claim which the Home Office threw out over a "lack of evidence".

The unnamed migrant came to Britain in 2006 as a student but overstayed his visa which expired in December that year.

He applied for leave to remain on human rights grounds in 2012, but the Home Office rejected his application.

In May 2017, he was arrested and later convicted for sexually assaulting a woman.

Just one month after his conviction, he claimed asylum, alleging he would face "fear of persecution" in Pakistan if deported.

Despite pleading guilty to the sexual assault, the migrant claimed in his asylum application that he was both innocent and gay.

Then-home secretary Suella Braverman refused him leave to remain, stating there was "no evidence of a substantial relationship being in place".

He appealed the decision, claiming to be in a relationship with a "Mr K" since 2019.

During the appeal hearing, the Home Office lawyer failed to cross-examine him about his homosexuality, even after the judge adjourned the case specifically for this purpose.

First-tier tribunal Judge Anthony Cartin said: "I made clear that if there was no challenge on these matters, I would make a note to this effect and was likely to allow the appeal."

Due to the lack of challenge, the judge allowed the migrant to stay in the UK.

The Home Office has since appealed against Judge Cartin's decision.

An upper tribunal found he erred in law, with Judge Declan O'Callaghan ruling the hearing had been "procedurally unfair" as the Home Office was unable to question the migrant's two witnesses.

These witnesses, the Home Office believed, would not provide convincing arguments that he was gay.

The judge ruled the migrant's sexuality was not properly considered "in the round".

"The only proper course is to set aside the decision in its entirety," said the judge.

A new hearing will take place at a later date.
