I'm currently very entertained by the white-supremasist sexist middle aged white men being angry at Enescu violin finals. Absolutely delightful
For context: all 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were taken by WOC - Japanese American Mayumi Kanagawa, 30, first place with Saint-Saëns 3, Korean Hyeonjeong Lee (who also received the Audience award and Best performance of the assigned work award), 13, second place with Brahms, and Japanese Wakana Kimura (who also received an award for the best performance of an Enescu sonata), 21, third place with Bartók 2.
My congratulations to the winners. Haven't listened to their performances yet but can't wait to! I hope all the racists cope and seethe lol

Final Review of the Novigrad Bardic Competition
Again this year it was my distinct pleasure to be invited as a guest judge to this esteemed competition. I was delighted to see several of my former students in attendance as well as a few colleagues, though some were noticeably absent which was disappointing.
I did get to spend some time in the company of the lovely and loquacious Callonetta, who ultimately stole the show. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
First day is always amateur performers and it was a very broad bunch. Ultimately, the stand outs were a trio of brothers whose harmonies made the hair on the back of my neck stand up in the most pleasant way, an older person of indeterminate origin who played a haunting rendition of one of @dandelionreigns better pieces in a minor key, and two men who I had taken for longshoremen before they got up on stage and set about performing the most riling jigs I've heard in years. It was the brothers that won after fierce debate amongst the judges - a fellow professor was a staunch holdout for the second performer but was eventually overruled.
Second day saw the more intermediate acts - those who'd been travelling or found a place amongst the nobility with a patron for the last few years. Only one act really made it in my opinion. I'm not entirely sure who she was, only that she came from somewhere to the North and played with more skill and flair than anyone else in competition that day. It was a unanimous decision amongst us judges that she should win and I was slightly perplexed that she seemed surprised.
Ah well, I hope to hear her again someday.
The final day brought the professionals. Now, I know that some amongst you may think that bards have a reputation for being self-absorbed, preening birds with little regard for anything or anyone outside of themselves (I've some idea where that little rumour got started; something in regards to a busy-body who forsook his birthright to go traipsing off into the woods with the first pretty face he saw), but here these brightly coloured artisans show the metal that resides underneath.
I live for these competitions. To see the dedication and work that my former students have put into their craft really is thrilling. A sense of pride and achievement that makes all that bickering and ridiculous posturing worth it. Of course the rivalry was fierce and the performances both rollicking good fun and sorrowful masterpieces, but I am happy to announce that once again Roger de Heaux took the grand prize. They were well deserving of it and I hope to see Roger back again next year to defend their title.
At last Callonetta took the stage and sang to us late into the evening, going so far as to drag up some of the professors to join her and even yours truly to accompany for a few choice songs. I cannot express my great joy at being a part of these competitions and my sorrow at having to leave again.
And so tonight I mark the last of my students' papers for this term and set out in the morning for the long trek back to Cidaris. I hope the shadow stays in my office and doesn't decide to follow me on the road.
Maybe I've had too much wine.
