Top 5 favorite story tropes? :]
I'm sorry I've spent so long sitting on this ask, but I really had to think about this one. Spoilers for Xenoblade below because this is me we're talking about. Also, I'm sorry if the specific examples I bring up somehow ruin your opinion of me, but I wouldn't mention anything I don't recommend.
This is the big one. I love characters that are outwardly stoic to the point of being inhuman. Maybe they buried their emotions deep down, maybe they convinced themselves they never had them in the first place, maybe they never truly did. Oh man. I love seeing them start to really feel, and rationalize it away, only for it to get harder day by day. Maybe they accept it in a quiet moment, accepting the kindness of another for the first time, or maybe it's an explosive culmination of a life not truly lived. There are so many ways to take it, and there are tropes within this trope, but whenever I see a character who's so stoic and unemotive as to be described as a life-sized doll, to whom insults and complements fall off like water against steel, I rub my greasy little hands together. Notable examples off the top of my head include, of course, Violet Evergarden, the titular character in one of two series I own on DVD just because I love it so much. Vivy from Fluorite Eye's Song also goes here, the main character in, you guessed it, the only other series I have on DVD (at great expense I mean come on Funimation it wasn't even a nice box set like Violet Evergarden). Recently, Alice Kuonji has been a character that scratches this itch for me, as I've been reading Mahoyo and just finished Chapter 10. Fuck, man.
Characters who are just so consumed by a task that they start to forget who they are. Bonus points if the task is violent. Always fun to see a character gradually lose the light behind their eyes [citation needed]. Everyone loves to see someone have something ripped away from them and try to fill that void with something that utterly consumes them until there's nothing left of what they were trying to hold onto in the first place. I'll bundle a character coming back from this brink in with this as well, with yet more bonus points if the character gets a warm hand to the cheek, the first kind gesture in years, and some variation of "You must be so tired." The Boar Boy, Dimitri Fire Emblem, is, of course, a fine example, but NieR: Automata is the prime example for me. Having two characters go about this arc in more or less opposite directions to end with "That's all there needs to be for us to kill each other" is just. *Chef's kiss*
This might be a pretty simple, tried-and-true trope, but magic swords of destiny are great when pulled off well. There are a few ways to do this, be it something the hero must go on a great quest for or something that only appears to those deemed worthy in one way or another. Recovering the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom is such a spectacle, on top of the story behind the blade's restoration, that I think it'll be a prime example of this trope done well even if it might be early to tell. Xenoblade also fucking whips when it comes to this trope. I mean, it's in the name. Shulk seizing his destiny to create a world with no gods, and wielding the Ontos Monado? Rex finally taking on the fear Pyra and Mythra carry and helping to shoulder their burden in a way even Addam failed to, and awakening Pneuma? Noah, finally accepting that if the world holds the lives of the people of Aionios back, he must end it, and unlocking the power of the Sword of the End? Peak. The Eclipse Homecoming/everything at the Ascension Grounds is probably going to be the top sequence of at least this console generation for me.
Who doesn't love a good breakdown? More specifically, when a normally put-together character has a breakdown, well-kempt hair falling into their face as they stagger around, cursing the sheer injustice of their situation. We love to see someone throwing their arms around, absolutely shrieking. Granted, these can easily feel forced or hammy if not built up to, but when a well-developed internal conflict finally reaches such an explosive and satisfying climax, or when a character has a beloved thing or unimpeachable ideal ripped away from them, seeing a satisfying blowup can get you excited for what comes next for the character like nothing else. I don't have that many examples off the top of my head, but even though I mentioned Xenoblade 3 already it's worth mentioning the most cucked man in all of fiction. I have a video of him screaming saved on my phone and the dialogue in each scene memorized.
This one is kind of odd, and I'm not even sure if it's really a trope so much as an emotion, but things that leave me just feeling hollow after I finish them are special. I can't really go into things looking for this, but when it hits, it hits like nothing else. Not sad, just empty. Utterly hopeless. Questioning what the point was. I won't give any specifics, but after I beat Signalis, an amazing horror game, I just laid awake in bed until like 4:30 that night. I wasn't even particularly scared, it just left that much of an impact on me. What a special, special game.
I ended up leaving some stuff out as they were too broad and/or overlapped significantly with things I listed. I love stories about androids, but the search for 'humanity,' in whatever form it may take, is a major appeal that's also covered by my first point. Violet Evergarden is basically an android show, as nobody who I've show the show to can tell if Violet is a human for a good four episodes. Alice is pretty different than the other examples I listed, and doesn't quite fit into that trope as cleanly, though the magecraft equivalent to androids, Homunculi like Irisviel von Einzbern, do a better job of displaying their emotions (bisexuality) than Alice. Similarly, I left out redemption/corruption arcs as I sort of touched on those in the second point.
If you have any questions/additions/recommendations about anything, feel free to send them in. This was a great ask, and really fun to type up.

give me your favorite manga or anime of all time. NOW. like, the ones who changed you as a person. if you are okay with questions like that!
HELLO HI I RISE FROM THE GRAVE FOR THIS INCREDIBLE YAPPING OPPORTUNITY
fr tho thank you Lottie for asking me too despite my death apparent, this will be long, I'll put the honorable mentions first as to make it a little more interesting and KHR will be at the bottom for the same reason-
Honorable mentions!
Sailor Moon - love myself some female friendship and magical girls. And women who could kick my ass like Pluto.
Black Rock Shooter - as above, plus vague setting and cool transformations.
Fate series - ok hear me out. I haven't watched the anime and just started the VN, I mostly play the mobile game, but it's about history and there's cute girls in it. Peak.
The Vision of Escaflowne - COOL MECHAS (hasn't finished it)
Yuru Camp - CUTE GIRLS FRIENDHIP AND COZYNESS also relaxing music (hasn't finished it)
Serial Experiments Lain - what the fuck was that
Violet Evergarden - tears? tears in my eyes? stop???
Dungeon Food - I'd have put this above if I wasn't just at the second volume of it, holy shit this is so fun but I feel it will crush my soul soon
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ah. Lord, NGE. The vagueness of its worldbuilding, the psychological aspects, the occult and religious simbology, and the GODDAMN MUSIC. If you like classical, epic and otherwordly music, I beg you to check out NGE's score even if you're not interested in the anime itself because Shiro Sagisu is a gift from the gods and one of the best composers of our time. The series is a masterpiece. People despise the movies but IMO they do exactly what a movie should do: entertain. Anno embraced the "I'll be cringe, but I'll be free" and went all out on them, as he should have. Also, there's Kaworu Nagisa. Look at him!
Steins;Gate
PLEASE. PLEASE DO AND DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS NOT READY. This anime will take your heart, embrace it, warm it up, GRIP IT IN ITS HANDS, CHEW IT AND SPIT IT OUT. Admittedly I played the VN because I wanted to experience all endings and OH MY GOD. It's terrifying and emotionally damaging. I started playing the sequel (Steins;Gate 0) and I had to STOP because it's so gut-wrenching in all the good ways that I need to be in the right spot for it.
Bleach
talk about recent experiences. I live under a rock when it comes to popular anime most times, and I never had the occasion to watch Bleach until recently (still haven't technically finished it because I'm waiting for TYBW to finish releasing to watch it). I... don't know what it is about Bleach that I like so much, but it got me in a similar way to KHR, as in I think about it often against my will and I'm even considering creating an OC for it. I think it's the characters, because the story is pretty straightforward... yeah, yeah it's the fictional men again. Kubo makes handsome men who fight with swords and transformation and everyone has their own powerups and...hhhngh. Look at this batch of cookies.
Ah no, wait, there's Shiro Sagisu again as composer. Almost forgot. *dances aggessively to spanish guitars*
Dr. Stone
I'm not a science brain, totally the opposite. Math doesn't math, geometry is evil and chemistry is wizardry. BUT, I love things that TRY to teach me those things in a funny and accessible way. I still won't understand them, but it was fun trying! And Dr. Stone has that, it's the moment I realize I like it when things are explained to me in that way, especially through media. Plus, fun characters, emotional moments, and cool plot.
Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your opinion on the show, KHR was the first ever japanese piece of media (excluding videogames) I've ever consumed. Being a lonely and socially awkward human being, it soon became my personality. It was these fuckers who made me get into manga altogether, I started buying the volumes (but only up to Varia Arc because 1. I didn't have an allowance, everything was done with Christmas/Easter/birthday money and 2. I was so obsessed with the Varia that my goldfish brain lost interest mid Future Arc.) and from there I discovered the pleasure of physical copies. The show has never aired in Italy, so nobody knew what the fuck I was talking about. It was, as many others were for me, a very lonely experience. But it was also the first time I felt... unique? Like, "this is my special little treasure and nobody can take it from me" kinda thing. I was emotionally invested in this show and every small piece of merch I could find like my Varia character songs CD became some of my most prized possessions (UNTIL I STARTED GIFTING AWAY MY SET OF VONGOLA RINGS BECAUSE I WANTED TO BRIBE PEOPLE INTO LIKING THE SHOW) (YEAH THAT WAS. STUPID. BECAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T WORK. AND ONLY MADE ME FEEL MORE LONELY AND RINGLESS) Then, the falling off. I started playing an MMO that also shaped part of my personality and as you often do with things that remind you of lonelier times, I sold my volumes and stopped thinking of KHR... until recently, when I joined this fandom and the spark came back because fuck it I'll be cringe but I'll be free. I got my fair share of flack for hyperfixating on an old anime at 24 years old, but it's one of the best experiences I've ever had. So yeah. KHR was ultimately good for me.
#ask the myell#ask answered#yeah as you can see Squalo settled my taste in fictional men for the rest of my life#swordsman ✅ long bright hair ✅ angry ✅#“it's the fictional men again” is a phrase that defines me#it's always their fault#like stop rojuro has no business being that handsome fuck off#also pre-betrayal aizen > evil aizen I said what I said#also my problem with anime is that I like to do stuff while watching it but if it's eng subbed I'm forced to look at it#so I never stop and sit down to watch anime because my brain thinks I'm doing nothing?#I could only sit through bleach because the italian dub is fire

Most of My Ryou Head Canons
He is bilingual and speaks English and Japanese fluently.
His mom is Japanese and his dad is mixed (English and Indian)
He learned how to cook from the collective help of his mom and both sets of grandparents.
Everything he makes tastes like heaven.
Sometimes, he forgets his friends can't speak English as well as him and he'll just start talking and have no one understand a single thing he says.
He hates coffee. It's disgusting and bitter and smells bad.
Whenever he can't find a figurine of a character he likes (or there just aren't that many), he makes them himself.
Ryou's favorite animal is a tapir because they're cute, and they look like bakus.
He thinks yokai and other folk spirits are incredibly interesting and loves learning about them and talking about them.
His favorite drinks included Calpico, ramune, blueberry lemonade, and vanilla tea.
He is a femboy, he's just a little embarrassed about it because he thinks his friends will make fun of him. (They won't. Except Duke)
He admires the fuck out of Kaiba and thinks he's the coolest guy to ever exist.
Despite living away from all of his family, Ryou is still spoiled with gifts and letters. It just isn't enough because he wants his family there with him, but some evil spirit scared him into moving away and never seeing his family again.
Ryou is an anime fan. His favorites include Violet Evergarden, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Black Butler, Nichijo, Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Madoka Magica, Panty and Stocking, Nanbaka, Nana, and Mob Psycho 100.
The reason Ryou's hair looks so fluffy is because he pins most of it up into layers so he can better avoid being told to cut it. When the pins are out, his hair reaches his upper thigh.
Ryou's Monster World campaign group is the other minor characters +Honda and Malik.
He's a picky eater and doesn't like things like milk, lentils, beans, most cheeses, mushy vegetables, or sea food.
If the other summoning types were available in DM, Ryou's favorite would be synchro summoning.
Animals love Ryou. He's like a Disney princess to them. However, Ryou is terrified of dogs and cockroaches. Yami Bakura makes them leave for him.
Ryou is attracted to two things: scars and muscles. This means being friends with Jonouchi, Honda, and Malik is fucking torture.
He and Duke are rivals, he just doesn't know it yet.
He loves Vocaloid! His favorite producers are Maretu, Kikuo, Pinocchio P, Deco-27, and IMO.
Ryou is genuinely just really good at art. Fantastic at making figurines, he can draw really well, and his writing is amazing.
Yami Bakura was the one that made Ryou's friends’ figurines and that's why Ryou's is in a different style. Ryou also made Zorc and Zorc's human form.
Ryou's favorite vocaloid song is UFO by Kikuo (listen to it)
He loves cats! They're his favorite pet animal.
Whenever Ryou gets asked to do something for Yami Bakura, he does it without much question. That's his friend!
He loves costume parties!
While Ryou loves the occult and learning about ghosts and spirits, he isn't much of a horror fan (unless it's Junji Ito).
Honda is Ryou's best friend.
Ryou gets sick easily, and whenever he does he becomes even more useless and airheaded. Yami Bakura usually took care of him, but After the Millennium World arc Honda started helping instead.
After Battle City, Ryou bought a shirt that Jonouchi had in order to show him support during tournament duels. (You know the shirt I'm talking about)
If Ryou has a lot of leftover food from the night before, he brings some of it to Jonouchi and Honda.
Ryou’s eyelashes are really thick, and Yami Bakura's eyelashes are longer than life itself and thin.
Ryou's loves games like Undertale, Zork, Stardew Valley, Little Miss Fortune, Fran Bow and Fire Emblem.
Ryou is smart enough to understand school and his interests, but dumb enough to not understand anything else. He has a case of stupid.
He is constantly dozing off or staring into space.
He is constantly forgetting to eat due to doing something he enjoys a little too much, or finding everything in his apartment disgusting (he buys his own food).
He likes cosplaying.
Ryou uses anti-meta or back row reliant decks. If given the opportunity though, he would use special summons reliant decks like Mayakashi or Tearlement.
His favorite monster card is Curse Necrofear.
He always tries to make friends with everyone, even if they were really mean to him at some point.
He likes pastel colors.
Sometimes, he tries to make his own Stop Motion videos. Sometimes, they look good. Sometimes, they look like ass.
Ryou harbors a special hatred towards Bandit Keith Howard.
He's very jealous of Yugi and Yami's relationship. This has led him to try and avoid them as much as he can.
He loves any game that involves Miis. Miitopia, Wii sports, Tomodachi Life, if it involves Miis he loves it.
Ryou has played every single Fire Emblem game.
Was almost diagnosed with an eating disorder, but wasn't due to the doctor “disappearing”.
Listens to Universe Cat Drowning on repeat.
If he met Astral, they'd be friends.
Zorc Necrophades was designed like that because Ryou was sick, sleep deprived, and hadn't eaten in a while. Also because horny.
He loves nicknames and pet names.
Tries to buy his friends nice gifts all the time. He is constantly told “no”.
He enjoys gardening, but only when he can plant flowering plants.
Ryou can sleep on his own just fine, but he'd sleep even better if there was another person with him. Preferably if they were holding him.
Certified monster fucker.
Forgets to drink water yet somehow cries a lot.
He lies a lot, mostly for laughs.
He does not like Dungeon Dice Monsters.

Diary of an Idiot Trying to Learn to Draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Part 1: Escaping the Comfort Zone)
Before we talk turtles and the early steps of my art journey with them, let's talk about me for a little bit.
Hello, most people know me by my online nickname, Star. I'm a perpetually tired gremlin in her late 20s from New England who still lives with her parents and two brothers. (I'm the middle child!) I love my two dogs to bits, I have a weird fascination with shipwrecks and maritime disasters, and I am a known art enjoyer to point of attempting to draw her own pictures. Sometimes it goes well, other times... ah, we'll get to that.
When I think about my history in terms of drawing, it all starts with anime. My first exposure anime was through a fairly obscure one called Sky Girls; I encountered it through Dance Dance Revolution: Super Nova 2 on the PS2, as the opening to the original OVA was one of the songs available in the game. I ended up watching most of the television series and I was quick to discover that, hey, there's an entire genre of animated television series that originate from Japan; subsequently, I ended up watching several anime that were popular during the late 2000s with Lucky Star, Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni all being shows that I watched during this period. It's difficult to say what entranced me so much about the art style quirks we so heavily associate with anime, but it's definitely had the biggest influences on my art; not just anime itself, but video games with anime art styles as well. If I had to name which pieces of Japanese media have affected me most in terms of art development, it would be Odin Sphere, KyoAni's works (especially Violet Evergarden), and Hidari (the character designer for three of the Atelier games and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.)
"Okay, but what about when you actually began to do your own art?" WELL, I can definitely say throughout elementary school I absolutely LOVED being in art class, but I didn't start seriously practicing until I was around 13; this was when my depression first reared its ugly head, but it was also about when I first got into fandom online. Now, the first fandom I actually made "content" for was Pokemon, but that wasn't drawing; that was fanfiction. The first fandom I actually drew for?
Call of Duty: Zombies. Yeah, I think we all have that one fandom we're embarrassed to mention that we were ever involved in. Regardless of the cringe factor, it was still important for me because that was when I first started interacting with other fanartists online and if I hadn't spent so much time drawing fanart of a bunch of WWII stereotypes while I was in high school, I wouldn't have laid the groundwork for what came afterwards.
In terms of overall skill, I'm definitely way better than I was back when I first started out, but there is still so much I have to learn; I do often look at other artists who are around my age or, hell, are even YOUNGER than me and think to myself "Why am I not that good?" and, ya know, art is an acquired skill that requires a lot of practice and due to my mental illness and lack of confidence/self-worth, there were periods where I would go for MONTHS without drawing anything, so the fact I'm not where I feel like I should be skill-wise is ultimately circumstantial (there are other personal shortcomings that have also been holding me back, but we'll get to those later). I have managed to learn to stop being so hard on myself and not be as perfectionistic, and I find myself drawing more and more for the fun of it and learning new techniques that'll result in better pieces rather than anything else. These are some of the Rune Factory 4 pieces I drew last year (all Arthur/Frey ship art, oops) and at this point I can look at them and think "Yeah, they're not perfect, but I also did a pretty good job."
All right, this is the part of the post where we finally get to talking about my experiences learning how to draw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles--specifically, the 2003 versions. It's been about a month since I started studying the show's art and even if I'm not the best artist on the block, I still have a decent amount of experience under my belt that learning how to draw them shouldn't be too hard, right? Right? I mean how hard can it be to draw four humanoid turtles?
Oh boy, of all the fandoms I've drawn fanart for, TMNT 2003 probably has one of the steepest learning curves that I have EVER experienced.
All right, what are some of the advantages do I have going in? There is my existing experience drawing, but I'd argue the fact that my brain is so hardwired to draw anime is an advantage in some ways. When I first looked at the show's art style (more specifically that of seasons 1 - 5), I was thinking to myself "How the everliving FUCK am I supposed to draw this?!" However, when I actually sat down and studied the model sheets, I was delighted to discover that a lot of the basic fundamentals that I already learned drawing anime bodies can be applied to the turtles; one of the only major adjustments I had to make was exaggerating the muscles of the arms and legs. Not only that, but one of the less human aspects of the turtles IE the plastron is actually incredibly useful as a makeshift guideline for the torsos; it quite literally divides them into chest, abdomen, and pelvis areas and I absolutely love it!
Unfortunately, that's about where my happiness with drawing the turtles ends and where my actual struggles start.
("Nekomata Mikey" from January 7th, which is probably my best and favorite turtle attempt thus far)
So, I suffer from a little something called "not liking to leave my comfort zone." It's not something that I'm incapable of doing, but getting me to break out of a repetitive routine and try something new or challenging is insanely difficult--no idea if it's a result of my autism spectrum disorder or not, but it definitely explains why I've hesitated to experiment more with my art and try new things... which is important if you want to further develop your style and improve. Oooooooh boy.
Now, I'm not necessarily looking to accurately replicate TMNT 2003's style, but I am hoping to maintain certain aspects when I draw the turtles. Stuff that is definitely contradicting what I'm comfortable with when it comes to drawing; the thick lines you see in a lot of the official art, the fact this show really likes using sharp angles to define physical features, the dark color palette of the first five seasons, the fact those seasons break the rule of "don't shade with black" that I've been taught from the beginning--a lot of stuff that I'm just not used to. It's hard not to become frustrated because half the time you have no idea what you're doing and have no idea whether it's going to look good or not.
Beyond that, there is the matter of the less human aspects of the turtles that are giving me a run for my money. I can somewhat handle the chunky three fingered hands and large two toed feet, but when I get to the heads and shells, that's where I start tearing my hair out. Even with multiple reference screenshots from the show and sassatello's tutorial on the head structure handy, I still find myself fumbling and making heads that are too angular and chunky (especially in the cheek area) or heads that are too round to the point of almost looking babyish. The shells are another matter entirely; it's weird because they are basically a dome-shaped backpack, but something about those things keeps throwing me for the loop no matter what angle or pose I'm drawing a turtle from.
*LOUD SIGH*
For all the struggles and frustrations I have, I'm still very happy to be studying and practicing how to draw the turtles. It's been about a month since I started pouring over the model sheets, taking screencaps from individual episodes to examine and annotate, and just drawing, and I've already learned so much. Not only that, but this whole experience of trying to figure out how to draw the main characters from an (almost) 21 year old cartoon has pushed me to look up... A LOT of tutorials for art skills I've admittedly been neglecting. Basic shapes used in the structure of the body, color theory and shading, all that good stuff. It is also a fact that studying the art of TMNT 2003 is exactly what inspired me to start posting all the model sheets and concept arts I have saved on my laptop. When you have a ton of art resources at your disposal, why not share them? Someone else might need them as much as you do.
I'm hoping to make another post like this in a couple months or so just to see how much I've improved, where I'm still kicking and screaming, and what areas I ought to focus on. Until then, take care and have a good day!

OC ORIGINS TAG
Thanks to @anyablackwood both for tagging me and for the very cool post about her relationship to Japanese immigrant names! The rules for this one are:
"Talk about the origins of the names and personalities (and maybe even the design?) of a couple of your OCs!"
We don't have time for a couple so we will, of course, do Arlasaire from my Untitled Yssaia Game!
🏷NAME
Arlasaire comes from the Googly-Translated words for "Of Fire" in Irish. But then I spelled it more French because Thuillean (before I made it into a real Conlang) was me taking Irish words and spelling them "more French."
In universe, Giluniques d'Magnia made the name up for her because he was 10 and 10 year olds think stupid names sound cool. (Take me at 10, giving all my characters Japanese names to make them "more anime". Ick!) Why did he name her something? Because she was burned so badly and all her family died, so she couldn't speak for a long time. She couldn't read or write either, so House d'Magnia just said "Gil, this is your new human pet! You name her!" And so he named her Arlasaire.
"But she was like 8, right? What was her name before that?"
Good note: Before that, she was named Tjen-Sa -- which is a Saegen name because her father was Saegen. It means Boon.
This is because, before I was adopted in China, I was left on a orphanage with a note pinned to me, saying my name should be "Tian Zao" (which I think is 1st-tone, 4th-tone?) which means like "To be a talent from the Heavens". So yeah, Arls is fully a self-insert and I'm happy to own that -- make me the next Dante's Inferno.
(Sidebar: I've always thought of that as like... "My True Name", if that makes sense -- like in the Fantasy Magical Names sense. But that means it is too sacred to go by on a day-to-day basis. It's like... I'm Belle and you should call me Belle. But my legal name is Isabelle and my True Name is Tian Zao. I also had other Chinese names because of the way orphanages work and stuff. It's like... a gradient of trueness. Also, while I don't know much about Chinese culture, I know names are tied to your fate and sometimes, kids have to change their names if their fate is too big or something. But I have always felt that's the name that fit me best -- it SOUNDS the most like the kind of person I want to be.)
CONCEPT
Arlasaire was most inspired by Tehanu from the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K LeGuinn and Violet from Violet Evergarden.
🎨VISUALS
Visually, Arlasaire was inspired by Zuko and Todoroki, but while their scars make them look more handsome, I explicitly wanted her scars NOT to make her prettier. It was important to me that you wince when you look at her for the first time -- because that's what people in the world do. And I think, IRL, that's what we do too when we see someone who or hear someone who is little bit mutilated and we're not used to it -- even if we don't want to!
That being said, Arlasaire is also supposed to be babygirl. Look at her. She's just a little blorbo! She's just a baby 🥺 She only stabs a little! I want her to have these big gold eyes -- like how a scared black cat will hiss and bite and then look up at you big when you pet them and they realize they like it.
Her First-Half outfit is supposed to be simple but recognizable -- SO I CAN DRAW IT over and over and not die. You know how a lot of anime takes elements from Western fantasy but you look at it and go "Nah, that's so Japanese"? That's what I wanted to do in reverse, is take vaguely Japanese influence and then make it Victorian/French-ish. (So basically, I did western clothes without the buttons!) And then her simple outfit became the backbone of all Thuillean fashion moving forward!
SO YEAH now you know :D

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
hello, there! thank you for following me, by the way. this ask’s a sweet surprise! i don’t mind at all, i’ve never answered this before :) i’ll make a list of all the characters i cherish. it’s not ranked over who i cherish more though (they’re all special for me). they’re all random nonetheless, but let’s see if you can catch a little bit of a ‘type’ here, haha.
1. kageyama tobio, from haikyuu!! — i first found him to be a very bothersome character in terms of background and personality. perhaps a little bit aggressive, unnecessarily so. however, i can see how much he’s changed after finding a team like karasuno and hinata especially, and over time we go unraveling his attitude to find an actually sweet person who probably only thinks about milk, cats, leaving his nails neat and other stupid things. he’s one of those tsundere characters and that’s nice. he’s overall a nice person who’s judged unfairly. and his awkwardness turns out to be adorable, so that’s a plus.
2. minato, from the film kaibutsu — this japanese show absolutely wrecked me. it seriously did. how the hell could they expect me to move on after it? i have no words for how much this story impacted me. this main character brings such a tender feeling of youth and fragile love towards another person that sweeps me off my feet. he’s got a repressed heart that slowly comes free and it made me feel very protective over him.
3. violet, from the anime violet evergarden — heartfelt letters aside, this anime felt to me like a coming of age show. or perhaps more like a coming of ‘human’. i love her because she’s truly intrigued about the world, the people, feelings as a whole and what it means to be a breathing creature. she’s just a child. she wants to see everything. to understand her heart. she’s a force of nature that beholds so much and doesn’t even know how to put into proper words, even if that’s her job.
4. lu guang, from shiguang daili ren —i just watched link click recently, but this boy surely made a way into my heart. i love how he’s ready to fight the world on behalf of cheng xiaoshi, and although he’s a hypocrite through and through, he’s real. he’s one of the realest people i’ve seen being portrayed. because who in heavens would choose someone unimportant to tou if you can choose someone you love? and how he hides his emotions? chef’s kiss. i love that he’s an ‘actions speak louder than words’ kind of guy; he’d call you an idiot in one moment, then burn the world for you in the following one.
5. the little prince, from the book the little prince — i cannot forget this book not even in a million years. changed me as a person. this vulnerable, free character makes me think he’s not just a hallucination from the author, he’s a magical shiny little person who’s discovering about life. i love him because he’d never change, you can’t change him, because he’ll always be a child at heart and mind. he’s everyone. he’s you, he’s me, he’s who we were. and that breaks me apart. he makes me cry, this one. he makes me remember that i’m a child too, regardless of how many time passes.
6. léon doré, from the film it’s not me, i swear! — i was a fifteen-year old watching this after having reconnected with my mother and that’s why it marvelled me. it’s a lot of what i’ve been through, of what i’ve been. i love him because i relate to him, and i wish i could’ve had that courage. i won’t spoil the story, but i really recommend it! my favorite film of all time. it has trigger warning for child abandonment, suicide attempts and child abuse though.
7. wei wuxian, from mo dao zu shi — oh, boy, i can’t relate to this one at all. i think he’s the only one from this list that doesn’t fall into the ‘introvert with hidden feelings and traumatised past’ type, not entirely. he only falls into the traumatised past. i think he’s the only extrovert character — besides hinata shouyou — that i actually like. i’m an introvert at heart, so at first he annoyed me too, lan wangji, i get you. but his strength? how he looks into the world that broke him and says ‘i’ll keep trying, i’ll keep smiling’? how he loves to the point of sacrifying himself? how he’s not attuned to his feelings because he’s more worried about being excited over little things? how he’s just overall so rebellious, but intelligent, sincere, witty, and does this all for the good, regardless if he’s being misjudged? how he’s been through hell but chooses to find reasons to keep going instead of looking back? oh, how i love him.
8. todoroki shouto, from my hero academia — i don’t enjoy boku no hero anymore, it has lost the entertaining bits for me. but i do expect the best for this boy right here, i love him for his cool nature, how he walks into life trying to let go of his resentment (after he befriends midoriya), and how he cares for his friends more than words can be let out to express. i wish the anime had grew to be better so i could watch more of him, but the feeling’s gone for me now. nevertheless, i still cherish him.
9. gin, from hotarubi no mori e — he’s a mystery, that’s for sure. he deserved so much more. he deserved life, he deserved a chance to live. i love the tenderness in him, and the sheer tenderness he showed our main character even if he didn’t even managed to be a real, normal boy! how can beings find the love in themselves and be so painfully alive even if they’re not in fact in the human spectrum? i love that he taught us this concept of love. i love this type of trope. i love and hate it at the same time.
10. dr. house, from house m.d — i had a hard time wondering if i should indeed add him here. because he’s an asshole. why do i like him? i don’t know. i see this flawed, asshole man and i see the pain in him and though it doesn’t justify anything at all, it’s what humans are all about. he judges everyone. he shames everyone. he shows people’s true intentions. he hides his true intentions. he’s repressed and lonely and he’s doomed. but he’s got this relationship with wilson, and women, and monster trucks games, and he lives. and he’s an awful man, but aren’t we all at core? i love to hate him.
bonus: nozomi fujisaki, from cherry magic, and nano, from girl from nowhere. they’re wonderful. they’re everything. love fujisaki’s view in life (it matches mine) and nano’s brilliance ✨
haha, well, this got longer than i thought, but wow, i enjoyed this a lot. thank you for asking me this, really! big hugs!!

My Review of Carole and Tuesday
How did I get into this anime? I’ve been wanting to watch this anime for the longest time. It’s just that when it first came out it was in ‘Netflix jail’. And not just regular Netflix jail, “Japanese Netflix jail”. After it was finally released, I found myself caught up in other ventures like Komi-san, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Violet Evergarden. I know, I sicken myself for that.
It’s important to note that in this story, people have the capability to live on Mars and the planet is now a terraformed, human-thriving place to live. We have AI technology to thank for that. Okay, now I see the connection to Shinichiro Watanabe directing this anime. I’ve been wondering for years why the genius behind Space Dandy and Cowboy Bebop would do this.
We start the anime with a young girl named Tuesday running away from home with nothing but her guitar and the clothes on her back. She leaves her affluent family behind and ends up in the metropolis Alba City. There she meets a keyboard player named Carole. Carole has been on her own her whole life. During the day she’s at part-time jobs (that she usually gets fired from) and at night, she plays the keyboard. Carole and Tuesday’s meeting was fate. They both connected when they jammed together. After playing on a stage for a few minutes, someone recorded their surprise performance and uploaded it online. The video became a viral sensation and caught the attention a man named Gus who wants to be the girl’s manager.
Aside from seeing the misadventures of Carole and Tuesday, we occasionally see things about a famous model named Angela. She has aspirations of hitting it big in the music industry as well and goes through all kinds of trials to be on par with all the AI generated music these days. But of course, Angela isn’t the main focus of the story, Carole and Tuesday are. They don’t even meet for real until the 8th episode. But Angela who already has name-recognition feels a little threatened by the mellow melodies of Carole and Tuesday. Let’s watch these talented ladies make some music!
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As I said before, this was indeed nabbed by Netflix back in 2019. Sure, it’s no problem now. But count back four years and you’ve got months of pirating or waiting depending on your patience. It eventually aired and as a collective everyone moved on to the next big thing. In later years, it looked as though Sentai Filmworks licensed it as well. Is that what Sentai is going to continue doing? Are they going to take every single Netflix anime series, license it, and redub it? Legitimately asking here! They just did that to Kakegurui. If they do, for the love of God, please don’t let them redub over the songs. And thank you Netflix for not trying to butcher the songs. I always get worried when watching a musical anime that it’s going to happen. Long story short, I loved both the sub and the dub. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Tuesday is played by Kana Ichinose (known for Maki on Kaguya-sama, Maaa on Made in Abyss, and Yuzuriha on Dr. Stone)
*Carole is played by Miyuri Shimabukuro (known for Inca on Fire Force and Yuuna on Tsurune)
*Angela is played by Sumire Uesaka (known for Nagatoro on Miss Nagatoro, Shalltear on Overlord, Chloe on Miss Kobayashi, Dekomori on Chunibyo, Aya on Tonikawa, and Mitsuki on Yuri is my Job)
*Gus is played by Akio Ootsuka (known for InuYasha’s father on InuYasha, All For One on My Hero Academia, Rider on Fate/Zero, Gouhin on Beastars, Kyouraku on Bleach, Blackbeard on One Piece, and Skull Knight on Berserk 2016)
ENGLISH CAST: *Tuesday is played by Brianna Knickerbocker (known for Rem on Re:Zero, Kanao on Demon Slayer, Filo on Shield Hero, Akane on Durarara, Wiz on Konosuba, and Misha on Misfit of Demon Academy)
*Carole is played by Jeannie Tirado (known for Lutz on Ascendance of a Bookworm, Norman on The Promised Neverland, Fana on Black Clover, Kanae on Tokyo Ghoul :re, Riko on Love Live Sunshine, Zera on Fairy Tail)
*Angela is played by Ryan Bartley (known for Allister on Pokemon Journeys, Ram on Re:Zero, Takechiyo on Yashahime, Yuna on SAO, Yusa on Charlotte, Futaba on Magia Record, and Gilda on The Promised Neverland)
*Gus is played by Jason Marnocha (known for Samurai Sword on Chainsaw Man)
DISLIKED CHARACTER: Mamoru Miyano or not, I don’t like Ertegun. To be fair though, there are a lot of Mamoru Miyano characters I hate. Look, the point is I don’t like this guy.
Yeah. His first couple of appearances left a nasty taste in my mouth. Even when it seems like he’s a better man with Carole and Tuesday after losing all his money, I would always be suspicious of the guy. At least with Cybelle, we never see her again after the shady shit she did. This guy, we see up until the end of the series.
SHIPPING: Tuesday sure has had her fair-share of love interests. Well, she had one. But Cybelle was too much of a stalker fan. We actually see another stalker who loved a singer too much here too. But because it’s Angela, they took care of things before she was shot on stage. The Cybelle thing kinda got crazy when she gave Tuesday a hickey and set off a booby-trap that injured her. Yeesh, this woman!
But then we see Tuesday seem a little interested in an investigative reporter named Kyle. She doesn’t have to say anything, her facial expressions and the redness of her face says it all. But one night, she was planning to give him a gift and sees him kissing another girl kinda shattered her.
Now if there’s anyone with an interesting love life that we only see a little bit of is Gus’s. Probably because of his prior marriage to Marie…who is now marrying another woman. This show is totally rep’in the LGBT+ community and I’m lovin’ it.
GUILTY PLEASURE: Yeah, I really like that Mermaid Sisters song.
Admit it to yourselves. The second you heard that song, you found yourself humming it the rest of the day.
HALFWAY POINT: Before the midway point, Carole and Tuesday made it onto the hit reality-competition show Mars Brightest. If I were to explain it, it looked like an American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent mish-mash. The girls made it through to the top 8 out of over 200 contestants. But they were up against some really talented singers including several influencers plus Angela who is doing her singing debut. Their non-use of A.I.’s with their music might seem like it would cripple their chances of winning the competition, but the judges and the audience have fallen in love with the duo. It wasn’t an easy ride here. Before their semi-finals match, a disgruntled Tuesday fan set up a booby-trap that burned her arm. Cybelle was all kinds of red-flags and I pray that’s the last I see of her.
After the semis, Tuesday is kidnapped. Tuesday’s mother (Valerie Simmons) orchestrated this to bring her back home. Tuesday’s mother is a politician and in the middle of an election to become the leader of Mars and doesn’t need her “disobedient” child causing mayhem in the middle of a crucial campaign. Thankfully, Carole, Gus, and Roddy were able to break in and bust Tuesday out (with some help from Tuesday’s brother). Unfortunately for Carole and Tuesday, this bust-out happened on the day of the Mars Brightest finale and they had to hurry up to the studio to perform live. The good news was they made it in time. The bad news, they were disqualified for not being present during the broadcast. But they were allowed to perform despite being disqualified. Their performance was so moving that they were actually given a record contract.
Gus however put an end to them getting a contract from that Mars Brightest judge Catherine. Gus has been in the business a long time and would feel it would be better for the girls if they had a little more freedom when it comes to their music. And so, they all go on a journey for an elusive producer named Tobe. They lured this secret guy out and after scaring the shit out of everyone with an axe, he agreed to help the girls produce.
I know I should have put this in the sub/dub section, but I fucking love John Snyder’s voice. No one ever says anything about this guy and he plays a grizzled, old fuck better than most voice actors. But aside from that, we’ve also got Tuesday’s mother waging a war on illegal aliens in her presidential campaign, a stalker getting a little too crazy for Angela, and Ertegun being financially bankrupt.
ENDING: It’s been well established at the beginning of every episode that Carole and Tuesday were going to cause a monumental moment that will cause a seven-minute “miracle”. So, it should go without saying that the girls hit it big by the end of this series. But what do we have to look forward to before then? Angela’s agent Mr. Tao being arrested. Angela’s mother having a heart attack. Carole and Tuesday working on an album. An Angela A.I. clone. Carole’s friend detained for being an illegal alien. The Mars election. The Grammy’s. All of that happening within the final couple of episodes may seem too much, but I think it all ended quite nicely.
First, let’s get to the Angela stuff. Everyone still sees Angela as the golden child in the music industry and nearly everywhere else. Mr. Tao expanded that by creating an A.I. of Angela. His experiments do go really in depth and can get unethical. Added pressure from her mother Dahlia hasn’t helped her one bit as it just gave her severe stress. Angela ends up getting hooked on pain killers and other medications. But a sudden collapse from Dahlia changed everything. Angela learns from Dahlia that she isn’t really her mother but loves her regardless and then she dies. Angela was a wreck at this moment and still attends the Grammy’s to perform. She gets the Best New Artist award and performs…I think.
I’m not sure if she actually performed or if it was all in her head. Angela’s psychosis almost went to Perfect Blue levels. What we are sure of is that she collapsed on stage as she overdosed on painkillers. Angela’s mental state was out of control that we don’t know if she’ll ever sing again.
The Mars election has been a big thing since the halfway point. Tuesday’s mother Valerie has been climbing up in the polls with her controversial illegal immigration stances. Truth be told is that, she doesn’t really support zero tolerance deportation, that’s her campaign manager pulling those strings. Her manager is not only behind the support for deportation, but also devised a terrorist attack and blamed it on illegal immigrants. Tuesday’s brother Spenser has been trying to save his mother from making a big mistake by continuing with this election any further. Spenser thankfully wasn’t alone as he was with that journalist that Tuesday took a liking to, Kyle.
As for Carole and Tuesday, these two ladies have really been riding their luck and it’s been going pretty well for them. They were able to write the last few songs for their upcoming album, they were nominated for a Grammy, and a notable singer wants to sing with them at the award show. Crystal was a singer the girls have met once before and now she wants to perform with the duo at the Grammy’s. And it was a success!
The girls are happy here, but they can’t help but notice the state of Mars and what could become of it. Tuesday’s mother could become the leader and put in a military state. Carole may never see her friend Ezekial again. Not to mention Angela’s slight fall from grace. The duo wants to do something. They plan with their closest allies to come up with a one-night performance. Gus, Ertegun, and the rest will get in contact with people they can trust. All Carole and Tuesday have to do is write the perfect song to unite everyone who will listen. Easier said than done! Although, this series has shown that these girls were able to make lyrics and music and having it turn out successful. Will it work? We get a conclusion in the final episode for most issues surrounding this series. Valerie listens to her son and drops out of the election, but not before telling off her campaign manager. Mr. Tao got his revenge on some enemies. Tao also paid Angela a visit and gave her a little bit of closure. Both he and Angela are genetically engineered children.
And as for this special moment, many special singers came for this occasion. There were big superstars like Crystal. Past acquaintances from the Mars Brightest competition like Pytor and GGK (not Cybelle thankfully). A singer from back in the day, Flora. And even…Desmond?! I thought Desmond died! And best of all, Angela came too. It seems she’ll go back to singing for fun, like when she was a child. Carole and Tuesday brought those feelings back to Angela with their songs.
All of these artists together on one stage. This was the seven-minute miracle. This song united all who listened. And at the end, we get the message that this’ll be continued…
gasp
In your memories.
D’oh! Cock-tease! I came in thinking I was going to love this anime. I was not disappointed in that department. Netflix has a reputation for putting out hit-or-miss animes. This is definitely one of the best…after Violet Evergarden.
First, I want to talk about the music. Nowadays if the anime is a musical, the character’s seiyuu will do the singing. And that should be an expectation when I see big names like Maaya Sakamoto, Mamoru Miyano, Megumi Hayashibara, and Sumire Uesaka. But there were different singers for nearly every song. I don’t think I’ve heard this since watching NANA and I love it. Another unique thing I saw with Carole and Tuesday was that the girls did not have a spat that almost breaks up the group. We did not see that at all. These girls got along and did their music.
Next…this anime got really current with a lot of things. Yes, I know this anime is set a possible century from now…and for some reason Instagram still exists, but it can still feel relevant. Music is mostly done through A.I. influence and nowadays, it’s starting to look a lot like that. Everything is now thanks to things like A.I. generated art and Chat GPT. And of course, the big thing that stuck out at me was politics. I am in no way an expert in the subject. That wasn’t even my major in school (although coming really close to minoring in poli-sci). I’m just a regular U.S. citizen that keeps up with the news. Seeing the portion of the anime where Tuesday’s mother is talking about cracking down on illegal immigration on Mars really strikes a chord. Yeah, pretty much every administration has their way of dealing with that issue and all of them really did a really lousy job.
I’m pretty sure this anime was making a point with what the Trump administration was doing with the MICE officers. Pfft. I know this really stands for Mars Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but seeing officers wearing uniforms that say MICE on it, I couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. Another bit that was struck during Carole and Tuesday was when it came to artistic freedom. Yeah, this is another thing that I’m noticing a lot of recently. Political figures cracking down on what artists can and can’t do or make an example of. Nowadays, I’m seeing certain states ban books, songs, and other such things. Seriously, just because Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton sing about rainbows, that needs to be banned? Tennessee, do better! And Florida, you’ve never been good. Just do the whole world a favor and drop in the ocean.
Yeah, I’m gonna stop my rambling here. This anime has been a treat and I encourage anyone who loves music to definitely check this out. Netflix has the whole series available for streaming. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to crack down on some Bungo Stray Dogs.

Hello! Thank you so much for your Tsurune translations!
I just finished season 2 and I remember reading the novel translations ages ago so I went back to compare some of it and I was surprised at how much ended up changed or sort of reworked for the anime. I enjoyed both the anime and novel for different reasons but I was curious what opinions you have on the anime adaptation as a whole as someone who read the novels in the original Japanese and even translated them.
I'm sorry if this has been asked before. It's just always so fun to see what opinions others have on things!
Well I would have to say it was pretty interesting to see the differences between the novels and anime! I don't really make it a secret that I don't think the novels are the most well-written out there, but I still enjoy them for what they are.
I know people often complain about adaptations not being faithful to the source material (I'm the same for the stuff I like) but I think there are works that lend themselves really well to adaptations that take liberties with the source, as long as they're still faithful to the themes. Take Violet Evergarden for example. The anime and the novels are pretty much alternate universes with similar characters and concepts but I still really enjoyed the anime even after reading the novels and I liked seeing the anime staff's take on the material and how they change/move things around to convey different feelings.
The same goes for Tsurune. The first season was relatively faithful (at least I think it was) but the second season was the one where they moved a lot of scenes around and lengthened/shortened several scenes. They also expanded on a lot of the background characters like the girls and the Tsujimine guys that aren't Nikaidou and Fuwa, which I really liked because I like ensemble casts. Ngl I teared up when Nikaidou had that montage with the Tsujimine club, something I felt was missing in the novel. Tbh the novels have this problem of having a lot of scene changes and not using its large cast really well, so it's really nice seeing the background characters have their time to shine and contribute to the themes/messages of Tsurune in their own ways. I do wish the anime touched on Shuu's issues with his parents more (I feel like if you didn't read the novels you wouldn't really know what the deal is there) and it's kinda sad that Masa-san isn't as present in this season, but I still enjoyed this reinterpretation(?) of the second novel. It made me appreciate the characters in new ways

It appears I was wrong on *several* levels regarding the nature of my innerworld, as well as my kintype.[1]
After much reflection, our innerworld’s genres appear to be (1) mythic historical iyashikei (albeit with Brothers Grimmesque folkloric / psychological horror elements), and (2) Arcadian Filianic media.
Similar works include “Spice and Wolf” by Isuna Hasekura, “Violet Evergarden” by Kana Akatsuki, “Little Goody Two Shoes” by AstralShift & Square Enix — *MAJOR* vibes with LGTS, by the way — and *especially* “Aristasia” by The Aristasia Community.
I (Yashi) appear to be a vixen spirit (one of the local minor geniae, to use a Filianic term) very similar to Holo from “Spice and Wolf”. We (the Orchards) are ALL spirits, as far as we know (there’s five of us). [2]
Rhiannë (aka Kyria, our godshard of Dea Filia) is a horsegirl (like those in “Uma Musume Pretty Derby” by Cygames) as opposed to a centaur, because… that’s just easier to visualize, I guess. Yasumi (if that’s still her name) is a local minor folk janya of healing. Sophie’s an attendant of Sai Candrë, which is a mythological pun — she’s an insomniac rabbitgirl, and in Japanese folklore, the moon (Sai Candrë’s sphere)’s associated with rabbits. This would also explain why Sophie looks so tired all the time: because her job requires her to work at night, yet she (Sophie) still interacts with the rest of the Orchards during daylight hours! Blueberry might be of the shiani (Filianic fae), but I’m still not quite sure. I’ll have to make it a point to ask her sooner or later.
Roughly 99% of other maids only see us Orchards as everyday Axials (ie “typical” intemorphs, of which, in this particular innerworld, there’s a bare minimum of *seven* feminine types — each based upon one or more of the myriad janyatic principles). [3] That said, this kinda-sorta works similar to Amaterasu’s divine markings in “Ōkami” by Clover Studio & Capcom — we (the Orchards) can see one another’s true forms, but most maids who aren’t spirit-beings or spiritually attuned can’t see our animal ears, tails, wings, etc.
The main area of the innerworld is Saresgrove. In older English, “sare” means “withered, rotten, dry, melancholy, etc”. Thus, “Saresgrove” more or less means “a sort of gloomy, withered wooded area”.
There are monsters of the week in the form of keres (Filianic demons) such as Anxietas, Dysphoria, etc. There’s a nearby wooded area called the Deepwoods (which is safe(ish?) for exploration), and then there’s the *Deeperwoods* (which is where all the eldritch horrors and monsters of the week lurk in the dark).
Overall, the historical era appears to be some kind of anachronism stew between c. 1400 and 1910 CE GD.
No magic in Saresgrove — Saresgrove’s very similar to the not!Europe of “Spice and Wolf” in this regard. That said, doors exist between media-worlds in the form of a phenomenon known as Sai Brighë’s Door.
〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜
[1] …Now that I think of it, I might’ve been right on both kintypes all along — I’m a vixen genia, yes, but I’m *also* from an all-girl world (and, thus, an alien).
[2] That is to say, there’s five of us *for now* (as of SUC 10.25.3343 IE NH // FRI 12.22.2023 CE GD).
[3] We’d like to clarify that, while Saresgrove seems to be some form of protectorate / territory / etc. of the Queendom of Arcadia in Internalia, schizomorphs (i.e. beings from not-all-female worlds) are more than welcome. For instance, Kyria Rhiannë seems to have greenlighted Flocke [LGTS] for entry to Saresgrove, if / when we find out what happens in Kieferberg. Additionally, there’s at least *one* anthropomorph.

Hello~ Up for a new scenario? ^^
Suppose the acquaintance in the previous ask becomes an incredibly precious person to you—someone who loves you, respects you, and won't judge you for your differences. Suppose they ask you to recommend anime that *you* personally are very much in love with no matter what other people think or say about the show. What title(s) would you give? (i.e., what is/are anime you love that may not be everyone's favorite but it's yours and is/are anime you'd only ever recommend to someone you trust to the highest degree because you know they'd enjoy it, too?)
(Note: this is entirely for funsies so please feel free to opt out or to take your time! ☺)
Thank you for this thoughtful question! I managed to narrow down 5 shows that shaped my overall anime experience!
Violet Evergarden: I talked about this before but Violet Evergarden was the show that got me back into watching anime. The structure of the show feels episodic but the overall narrative focuses on Violet and her character journey to discover the meaning of “love” as well as to rediscover herself. It’s a wonderful character-driven story with many tearjerker scenes! While movie (which is the final installment in the series) is controversial, I do think Violet’s journey is still worth it.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: a wonderful character-driven story focusing on the Japanese art of rakugo. This show has a really well-written and complex cast of characters. It's a sign of wonderful writing when the story made me fall in love with a character slowly as the show progresses. At the beginning, I felt indifferent to Yakumo but by the end of the series, he's now one of my top favourite characters. His character is complex, with layers of contradictions which fascinates me. The rest of the cast were fantastic too. Yakumo, Sukeroku, Miyokichi's stories are deeply entwined with Yotaro and Konatsu's and this generational connection is one of my favourite aspects of the story.
The Twelve Kingdoms: A stand out isekai story that puts a lot of the current isekai to shame! I wrote a review here so check it out for my full thoughts!
Revolutionary Girl Utena: I was reluctant to watch this show because of its reputation as a show full of metaphors and subtext. I’m glad that I gave it a chance because this show is a life-changing experience. It’s the type of show where you will discover something new every time you rewatch it. However, I think this show is not for everyone especially with how it deals with many sensitive topics.
BanG Dream!: This show is really special to me because it led to many wonderful encounters and experiences! The story is a really simple one: it’s about a high school girl starting a band with her friends. The heartfelt character writing captured my heart. I will always recommend this show for people who enjoy a good slice of life/music story!!!
