Also from last weekend's free passes to Southwick's Zoo, one of the overcrowded gifts shops featured two vintage taxidermy pieces. A cheetah chasing down an impala, which was crammed under a leopard killing a zebra foal. I’ve been so looking forward to showing you this labour of love. And potentially the biggest restoration I’ve done to date. This lovely red deer needed some well overdue tlc. With a wonky face and cracked nose, mouth and around the eyes. Missing fur where the skin had split due to age, heat and humidity. It was kept above a fire place so the fur was very dry and brittle. I couldn’t source a red deer skin so I managed to find a roe deer skin I tanned and used that to cover the areas exposed where the skin pulled from where the stitching was. It was also sun bleached as well so I gave the fur a complete makeover and restored the colour all round. Also correcting the wonky face and nose. Adding in textures to create a more realistic finish. The ears also had some cracking with I fixed and restored the colour. The antlers were very dusty as well as the whole specimen so that had a very good clean too. Here you see before and after of me restoring him. I had to have an awkward photo of me in the photo to give you a sense of scale of this beast. This was the smallest one out the three deers which is insane! Word is this antique moose was Montana’s state record at the time (circa 1920). We finally got it hung on the wall of its owner’s new home, which was no small feat. The guys hanging it estimated the weight at well over 100 pounds (See previous post for size in relation to the doors of a full-size cargo van) The massive weight of this moose is due to the materials used to create it. The armature within the moose consists of burlap, plaster, clay, excelsior, and jute tow that have been shaped around a wooden frame. Areas of the face were filled out with sawdust. All common construction materials of the era. I did some restoration on him prior to the install because he was leaking sawdust from fissures in his face and neck. These cracks, and seams that have expanded due to age-related shrinkage, provided a literal window into his construction. Back in the day the use of sawdust (among other materials like straw and cotton) to fill animal hides is the reason people would refer to taxidermy as being “stuffed”. Stuffing animals was originally developed as a way to preserve and display specimens of newly discovered species that were collected on voyages to exotic unexplored parts of the globe. The oldest example of a taxidermied animal is claimed to be a crocodile from the 1500’s, other sources claim a rhino from the same era. But the actual trade of preparing trophies for hunters didn’t come until much later. When the taxidermy business was in its infancy in the 1700’s hunters brought animals to their local upholstery shoppe to get them stuffed. In stark contrast, nowadays the preparation of large animals involves sewing the tanned hide over a light-weight urethane foam armature, a process referred to as “mounting”. This is why the correct term for a modern trophy is a “taxidermy mount”. These life-like urethane foam armatures (called forms or mannequins in the biz) are generally prefabricated and massed-produced. However, taxidermists creating specialty mounts (e.g. for taxidermy competitions, natural history museums, pet preservation, etc.) often cast their own custom urethane components

With moving day behind us, the easy part is over. Now to get these guys on the wall of their owner’s new home. The bison is a modern mount; the skin was sewn over a lightweight prefabricated urethane foam armature (referred to as a “mannequin” in the taxidermy biz) but the moose is a bona fide antique. The armature within the moose consists of plaster, clay, burlap, and excelsior that has been shaped around a wooden frame. Areas of the face were filled out with actual sawdust. Weighing in at nearly 100 pounds it’s a beast in more than one sense of the word and is going to take some serious muscle to get on the wall. The moose had some age-related cracks (which provided a literal window into his construction) so he required some restoration to arrest the loss of sawdust, but I got him all fixed up and now he’s ready for display again. I will be posting a photo of him after we get him installed so you can appreciate the size of this guy.
