And the stills from the croc restoration! A very large restoration project just complete. This is an antique nile crocodile that needed some well overdue tlc. I completely cleaned it. Fixed the jaw, missing claws, new eyes, sculpted in the missing parts on the top of the head and other parts too, also covered all the seals where there were signs of the stitching. And of course sculpting in the missing teeth and recolouring them. Then the big task of completely recolouring the crocodile again so it looks more realistic to an actual crocodile and not some horrible brown antiquey mummified look. Safe to say he looks much happier and more fierce looking 😊 #crocodile #nilecroc #scaleyboi #taxidermy #restoration #taxidermyrestoration #cool #instasize #naturalhistory #oddities #cool https://www.instagram.com/p/Coxd_8gK7_6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One of my recent taxidermy repair jobs that got returned to its owner last week. This peacock’s tail got pulled off when it became entangled on something while the owner was transporting it somewhere in a moving van. A peacock’s long tail feathers aren’t the true tail of the bird – they are elongated feathers that grow out of the lower back right above the base of the actual tail and are a type of covert feather. The last photo of a living bird illustrates this. The correct term for these feathers is the “train” (think wedding dress, not locomotive) Sometimes taxidermists mount peacocks with a removable tail/train section so the bird can be shipped in 2 pieces and reassembled upon delivery, versus shipping the bird in a long unwieldy crate. I’m not sure if the tail was originally intended to be removable on this bird or if it just broke off in the same area by coincidence, but if it was actually intended to be removable this is the worst attempt I have ever seen because there wasn’t anything holding the train onto the body and the body is merely stuffed with excelsior – there wasn’t a wrapped body form or foam mannequin to anchor the train onto. Whatever the case, per customer request the train won’t come loose ever again.
Abridged description for laypersons of my repair: I glued a tab along the leading edge of the train designed to tuck under the skin of the covert feathers on the body. Next I introduced some glue into the excelsior to stiffen it up and so I could shape it a bit. After the excelsior was dry I covered the open area with a glue-soaked piece of fabric. Once the glue-infused fabric dried onto the excelsior it created a rigid surface to work with. I applied glue onto the surface of the rigid fabric and to the top of the tab on the tail. I laid the tail onto the fabric and tucked the tab in around the edges of the opening in the body. (The tab adheres to the underside of the skin surrounding the opening in the body and insures the edges of the tail section can't curl and separate from the perimeter of the opening) I then placed a generous number of flat-headed stickpins through it, and also pinned the skin around the perimeter of the opening. These pins will remain in the bird, they don't get removed later. Then I applied compression to the area for a few days while everything dried. Final step was wiring the shafts of the undermost tail quills onto the existing looped-wire tail support that was sticking out of his rump (wiring concealed by the downy vent feathers). The bird was also originally mounted in an awkward lurching pose, so I adjusted his posture to a natural upright position. Both were easy straightforward repairs and the mount now looks good as new. The owner was very happy with the results and commented that the bird looks better now than when he purchased it.

Finally get to post some before and after shots of the restoration I’ve been working on now that he’s been dropped off. This little fox came to me pretty beat up: missing fur, broken and mangled ears, snapped tail, broken legs and unable to actually stand on its own. Getting into it, I realized that it contained the entire skeleton and was a freeze-dried piece. I was asked to just give him a little bit of life and make him stable. There’s always more that could’ve been done, but he looks less homeless and a little handsome now. Unique and super fun project. Scroll through for before and after pix, and he’s available for purchase now through @paintedladytrashions • • • • • #taxidermy #taxidermist #ladytaxidermist #foxtaxidermy #taxidermyrestoration #taxidermyrepair #taxidermyforsale #inthestudio #deadthings #vintagetaxidermy #gildedcoyotepressandtaxidermy (at The Rust Belt Market)

I posted about this vintage taxidermy horned viper a little while ago, I got it very cheap at a vintage market ages ago and recently finished revamping and cleaning it's original frame and just made it look a bit better! I don't have plans to sell it at the moment as it's a beautiful snake, if I did decide to part with it you would be the first to know! 🙂 #hornedviper #vipers #skeleton #skulls #animalskulls #animalbones #reptiles #snakes #driedsnake #taxidermysnake #reptiletaxidermy #vintagetaxidermy #taxidermyrestoration #framedtaxidermy #nature #skullcollecting #naturalhistory #driedspecimen #taxidermy #oddities #curiosities #curiocabinet #curiocollection #wunderkammer #altdecor #onlineshop #etsyshop #itwasdeadwhenwemet #vultureculture #ossaflores https://ift.tt/2MPL9rU

Yet more images of the vintage Raccoon I've been working on. This is a prime example of taxidermy that wasn't done properly. There are many problems so I'm methodically working through each one carefully. There is so much poor quality taxidermy entering people's homes these days (thanks to the internet). I anticipate having to repair more & more in the future as they were not preserved to last. #craptaxidermy #poor quality taxidermy #raccoon #taxidermy #taxidermyrestoration #taxidermyrepair

Another restoration job 😊 gave these birds a very overdue clean and freshen up. Recoloured parts where there were missing feathers, fumigated, new eyes in most of the birds (I know not scientifically correct but the clients request). Currently waiting for a new dome for it to be house in. But all in all looks a lot better! #taxidermyrestoration #birds #restoration #bird #taxidermy #taxidermist #birds #feathers #naturalhistory #oddities https://www.instagram.com/p/CUxKkQOqPJl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Restoration of an antique turtle shell that sadly lost one of its sections on its shell. I resculpted and painted the new sections. A lot better than before. 😊 #taxidermyrestoration #turtleshell #antique #commission #beforeduringafter #taxidermy #naturalhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CU7MfFtq_Jw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Mini restoration job on a 1930’s cub called Colman. This poor cub had his nose chewed off by a naughty puppy. So Coleman needed a rhinoplasty to make him good as new. A little touch up on the eyes as well to make him glow. I think he looks a lot happier 😊 #taxidermyrestoration #taxidermist #taxidermy #bear #cute #fluff #curios #restoration #beforeandafter #oddities #vultureculture #cub #naturalhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKL7kHKzA3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Red deer restoration. Definitely a labour of love. Had to recolour the entire fur, clean a very dusty mount beforehand. And fix the ears, eyes and noise before putting the colour back in. I’ve tried to show how dark red deer can be. It shows also how much a mount can be sunbleached from UV light over many many decades. This is client work NFS. #restoration #deer #fur #beforeandafter #taxidermyrestoration #fur #restoring #naturalhistory #commission #art #deer #gamehead #oddities #curios #wildlife https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ9yOmgKDnv/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’ve been so looking forward to showing you this labour of love. And potentially the biggest restoration I’ve done to date. This lovely red deer needed some well overdue tlc. With a wonky face and cracked nose, mouth and around the eyes. Missing fur where the skin had split due to age, heat and humidity. It was kept above a fire place so the fur was very dry and brittle. I couldn’t source a red deer skin so I managed to find a roe deer skin I tanned and used that to cover the areas exposed where the skin pulled from where the stitching was. It was also sun bleached as well so I gave the fur a complete makeover and restored the colour all round. Also correcting the wonky face and nose. Adding in textures to create a more realistic finish. The ears also had some cracking with I fixed and restored the colour. The antlers were very dusty as well as the whole specimen so that had a very good clean too. Here you see before and after of me restoring him. I had to have an awkward photo of me in the photo to give you a sense of scale of this beast. This was the smallest one out the three deers which is insane! I’m so happy how he’s turned out and really looking forward to returning him back to my customer 😊 #taxidermyrestoration #restoration #deer #reddeer #commission #naturalhistory #fur #antique #vintagetaxidermy #antlers #oddities #curios #taxidermist #taxidermyart #vultureculture #gamehead #deertaxidermy #interiors #mammal #nature #wildlife #art #restore #conservation https://www.instagram.com/p/CUFIdgxKS9_/?utm_medium=tumblr
